Eight people have been confirmed dead and a further 72 are still missing in Queensland after flash floods swept through the Toowoomba region yesterday. Floodwaters were so strong they washed away cars and damaged buildings in the area west of Brisbane. Queensland Premier Anna Bligh called the floods an “absolute tragedy” and warned that the death toll may rise significantly. Heavy rain is reported to be hampering rescue efforts, and further storms are expected in Toowoomba today.
