Queensland’s tourism needs rethink: report

These must be addressed if the state was to turn around lagging visitor numbers, the Queensland Tourism Network Review, has said, Sydney Morning herald reported.
The report said competition for tourism dollars had grown dramatically with the introduction of low-cost carriers, cheaper outbound travel and the creation of new tourism product elsewhere.
“While some prefer to focus on the strengthening of the Australian dollar as a primary reason for visitor growth slowdown, most stakeholders noted the lack of new product, lack of new investment into upgrading existing product and the overall level of service standards as major impediments to stimulating greater visitor growth and improved yield for operators,” it was quoted saying.
The report found regional tourism organisations were under-resourced, adding they should be amalgamated with Tourism Queensland into a single entity.
“These proposals will certainly provoke much-needed debate and discussion within the industry,” Tourism Queensland Chief Executive Anthony Hayes was quoted saying.
“Parts of the Queensland tourism network are nearly 30 years-old and have not changed in that time.
