China has the largest number of overseas students in the world, with a record 1.27 million studying abroad at the end of 2010, according to the latest statistics from the country’s Ministry of Education. Of this total, approximately 285,000 were new students who began their overseas studies last year, up 24% from 2009, the ministry said.Reported by the China Daily, the data also revealed that more than 90% of the students were studying in just 10 key destinations – the US, Australia, Japan, UK, South Korea, Canada, Singapore, France, Germany and Russia. US colleges are reportedly seeing a surge in applicants from Chinese students. The report also suggested that most overseas students returned home after graduation, although no figures were offered to verify this.
