Changi Airport (CAG) has completed renovation work at Terminal 1 of Singapore’s Changi airport, and will unveil the new facilities on 18 July.

Started in May 2008, the SG$500 million (US$394m) upgrade to Changi’s oldest terminal has included refurbishments to the terminal’s interior design, as well as work to improve passenger flow at the Departure Check-in Hall, Departure Transit Mall and Arrival Hall. About 22,000m² have also been added to the building, bringing T1’s total floor space to about 308,000m².

Based on a ‘Tropical City’ design concept, the upgrade includes higher ceilings, improved lighting, wider thoroughfares and landscaping. A highlight of revamp will be the addition of the world’s largest kinetic art sculpture in the Departure Check-in Hall.

The upgrade will boost T1’s handling capacity by 14% to 24 million passengers per year.

“Terminal 1 holds a special place in the hearts of many Singaporeans given its long history. We are pleased to have retained its heritage while preparing it for the future. With a contemporary ambience and improved facilities, passengers and visitors will continue to have a world class airport experience in T1,” said Lee Seow Hiang, CAG’s CEO.

“At CAG, we believe in the importance of constant rejuvenation in order to keep the Changi Experience refreshing. With this in mind, we are embarking on the implementation of various enhancements and improvements around Changi Airport to meet the changing needs of our customers and prepare for future growth.”

Following the T1 revamp, CAG will embark on the development of a brand new Terminal 4 later this year. This will replace Changi’s existing budget terminal, which will close on 25 September 2012. The new T4 is expected to open in 2017.
