More roof gardens will be added to buildings in Shanghai over the next five years, authorities in the city have said. The Shanghai Daily reported the municipal Afforestation & City Appearance Administration as saying that it was necessary to create the new roof gardens as there were fewer areas available for tree planting at ground level. The so-called ‘multiple layers of greenery project’ will see more than 80% of new buildings in the Hongqiao and Lingang New City areas feature roof gardens, while ‘green walls’ will also be created on the sides of buildings. A total of 1.5 million square metres of such green space will be created by 2015, officials were reported saying.
