The SkyTeam airline alliance has announced its continuing expansion, with the addition of Middle East Airlines (MEA) as its newest member. The Lebanese national carrier, also known as Air Liban, will formally sign an agreement on 28 February to start the process of joining SkyTeam in 2012. SkyTeam said that the new member will allow customers to benefit from increased access to and from the Middle East and Western Africa.
SkyTeam has made significant progress in attracting new members over the past 12 months. In 2010 China Eastern Airlines and its sister company, Shanghai Airlines, joined the expanding alliance, as did China Airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Aerolineas Argentinas. Earlier this month Saudi Arabian Airlines became the first airline from the Middle East to announce its membership.
Other SkyTeam members include Delta Air Lines, Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Aeroflot, Vietnam Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Alitalia, Air Europa, AeroMexico, Kenya Airways, Czech Airlines and TAROM.
