Songtsam Lodges has started work on two new boutique lodges along the ancient Tea Horse Road in southwest China.
The company is recreating this 1,000-year-old trading route for 21st Century travellers, with the construction of new luxury boutique hotels across Yunnan and Tibet.
Since 2001, when Songtsam Lodges established its first boutique hotel in Shangri-La, the group has aimed to create a new “Songtsam Circuit” of Tibetan-style boutique hotels. It now operates a portfolio of six properties, and will add two more in the coming years. Construction work is underway on new lodges in Lijiang and Lhasa, both of which are expected to open by May 2017.
Two more Tibetan hotels are then expected to follow, located in Lhoka and Xigaze.
“I always hope people to know and understand Tibetan culture and spread its inspiration to more people. This is all I want. I’ve started managing and operating hotels since 2001. Through all the experience I had in the past 14 years, I believe we are capable of bringing the happiness generated by staying in Songtsam Lodges to more people,” said Bai Ma Duo Ji, founder of Songtsam Lodges.
The ancient Tea Horse Trail took its name from the horse caravan paths that wound down from the mountains of Tibet to modern day Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces in southwest China.
The new properties join six existing lodges: Songtsam Shangri-La, Songtsam Tacheng, Songtsam Benzilan, Songtsam Meili, Songtsam Cizhong and Songtsam Linka.
