Union leaders in Spain are set to meet with the country’s development minister Jose Blanco tomorrow in an attempt to prevent strikes at Spanish airports. Unions threatened to hold industrial action over 22 days in April and August, which would have impacted the country’s most popular inbound tourism periods. Qatar Airways, Etihad and Emirates all offer flights from their respective hubs to Spanish destinations. The walkout would include baggage handlers and back office staff, as well as firemen. An IATA spokesperson told the UK Daily Telegraph that other European airports could be affected if the strikes go ahead. “If you take one country out of the network, there could be problems,” he said. “Any disruption can lead to aircraft and crews being stranded in the wrong place, which can have a knock-on impact.” It would also impact connecting flights that include Spain as a stopover. Blanco is reported to be optimistic that an agreement can be reached, but unions did not agree. Should strike action take place, Essential Travel has said that consumers should check that they are covered for cancellations in their insurance policy.
