Starwood has opened the St Regis Langkawi, marking the luxury brand’s first ever property in Malaysia.

The new resort, which is a joint venture between Rajawali Group and the Malaysian government’s Ministry of Finance, is set on 600-metre stretch of sandy beach in the Langkawi archipelago, just off the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

“The St Regis Langkawi will be the first luxury resort to open within the last decade in Langkawi and there is an opportunity to further strengthen a market of well-heeled travellers that will appreciate the renowned brand’s tailor-made services and programmes. We look forward to a long-term collaboration with Starwood Hotels & Resorts,” said Erhard Hotter, Rajawali Group’s senior vice president of hotel operations.

The new luxury property becomes first all-suite resort in Langkawi, offering 85 suites and four private overwater villas. All units offer private terraces with sea views.

There are six F&B outlets at St Regis Langkawi, including the oceanfront Kayuputi Asian restaurant, L’Orangerie, which serves French fusion cuisine, the St Regis Bar and a wine bar, while other facilities include a spa, beauty salon, an infinity swimming pool, fitness centre, and a 100,000m² swimmable saltwater lagoon.

And for the MICE market there is more than 1,000m² of event space, including an outdoor wedding pavilion, a pre-function area, several meeting rooms and the 300m² Astor Ballroom.

“The highly anticipated arrival of St Regis into Malaysia marks another milestone for the luxury brand’s expansion in Southeast Asia,” said Charlie Dang, Starwood’s regional vice president for Southeast Asia. “With Langkawi rapidly emerging as a world-class destination, the opening of the St Regis Langkawi will enhance the island’s efforts to become an internationally renowned luxury destination for affluent global travellers.”

The Langkawi resort becomes the 37th St Regis worldwide and the fourth in Southeast Asia, following existing properties in Bangkok, Bali and Singapore. And the brand’s Malaysian expansion will continue in the coming weeks with the opening of the St Regis Kuala Lumpur, which is scheduled to welcome its first guests in May.

Starwood also operates Westin and Luxury Collection resorts in Langkawi.
