Sydney Airport has commenced the next stage of upgrades to its international terminal, T1.
The latest phase of the project will include the redevelopment of gate lounges, improvements to immigration and security areas, and the introduction of new navigational signage throughout the terminal.
The terminal’s F&B areas will also be upgraded, with the launch of The Marketplace, a new area that serves “street food-style fare” with floor-to-ceiling overlooking the airfield, and City View precinct, a “premium dining hub” that will feature a selection of restaurants.
“With the most improvement projects underway at the airport since the 2000 Sydney Olympics, we have worked tirelessly on the upgrade of T1 while ensuring minimal disruption for the 150,000 people who visit the airport every day,” said Sydney Airport’s managing director & CEO, Kerrie Mather.
“We are extremely proud of what we have achieved so far and with more upgrades planned in coming months, we look forward to delivering a world-class airport experience for everyone departing, visiting or arriving in Sydney.”
The programme to renovate T1 actually started in January 2015, since which time the airport has added new retail outlets, a new dining area, and 25 ‘SmartGates’ which provide automated border control for departing passengers.
Sydney Airport currently serves more than 40 million passengers a year and connects the city with more than 90 domestic and international destinations.
