Finnair is launching daily flights from Helsinki to Doha, as it continues to expand its Asian network. This route follows in the footsteps of Finnair’s recently launched flights from Copenhagen and Stockholm to Doha.

These new flights form part of Finnair’s new long-term strategic partnership with fellow oneworld airline, Qatar Airways. The partnership includes a comprehensive codeshare agreement and shared passenger and cargo capacity between both airlines on the route.

Services will depart the Finnish capital each day at 16:00 as AY1981, arriving into Doha at 23:45 local time. On the return, flight AY1982 will leave Qatar at 08:00 each morning, arriving into Finnair’s hub at 14:15.  Customers on the new route will benefit from seamless connections via Doha to Qatar Airways’ extensive network of around 100 destinations across Australasia, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Customers looking to travel between Helsinki and Doha can enjoy return fares from as little as €556 (approx. USD 591.08 ) including all taxes and charges.

The national carrier of Portugal, TAP Air Portugal, recently celebrated a milestone in the renovation of its fleet by receiving its 30th new aircraft also ending the commercial operation of its last Airbus A330. Rita Tamagnini, head of corporate communications talks about the Carbon Emissions Offset Programme, the airline’s role in positioning Portugal as a global destination and its roadmap for this year.

TD: What have been the airline’s initiatives to become more environment friendly?

Since 2015, we have undertaken the mission of modernising our fleet, by both purchasing new aircraft and making existing ones more efficient. In most of our aircraft, we have replaced the cabin interiors with lightweight and environment-friendly materials, allowing for greater performance. Throughout this process we have been working with national suppliers whenever possible, thus boosting the Portuguese economy. Until 2025, TAP will receive a total of 71 new aircraft (between A320neo, A321neo and A330neo). These new aircraft, along with new high-efficiency engines, allow for a 15% decrease in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. TAP became the first airline in the world to launch a Carbon Emissions Offset Programme, in partnership with International Air Transport Association (IATA).

What about waste and energy issues?

TAP privileges the routing of its waste for valorisation, whenever technically and economically feasible. The service provider ensures solutions for recycling, regeneration, waste recovery when possible, to the detriment of disposal operations. The service provider is licensed and ensures that the services provided comply with all applicable legal and regulatory standards.

Energy efficiency is a priority for TAP, not only in air transport activities but in ground and maintenance activities. Through energy auditing, we analyse detailed consumptions in each facility and equipment, identifying measures technical and economic feasible to increase energy efficiency.

“7.7% growth in passenger traffic.”

What have been your load factor in the last six months?

Year-to-date, the load factor is now at 80.5%. From January to the end of November 2019, the airline had already carried a total of 15.8 million passengers. This is 1.1 million more than in the same period of 2018, a 7.7% growth. By the end of November, we were able to carry the same number of passengers as in the whole year of 2018, still missing December which is one of the busiest months throughout the year.

What is your roadmap for 2020?

TAP has posted remarkable growth in the number of destinations offered by its network over the last two years. In 2018, we increased the number of destinations by 12% and it has expanded by another 9.3% so far in 2019. In 2020, the focus will be to consolidate and expand the most successful investments. We continue to invest heavily in the Americas and once again expand our network of transatlantic destinations with the launch of three new routes: Maceió, in Brazil; Montreal, Canada; and Lisbon-Ponta Delgada-Boston, in the US, starting this year.

“EconomyXtra, a new way to travel.”

6) TAP Portugal is a very old airline. What are the new ways in which you are reaching out to new customers?

In the beginning of 2016, we laid the foundations for a new era of investment and renovation. Since then, the new TAP became a reality: a more modern airline. The solid growth is based on a strong increase and modernisation of its fleet, and it was the first airline in the world to fly the entire family of the modern-day Neo Airbus. We were also the first in Europe to offer free unlimited text messages via Wi-fi on intercontinental flights. To provide maximum flexibility of choice and always listening to the suggestions of its customers, TAP launched last year EconomyXtra, a new way to travel in economy on medium haul flights.

How has the airline helped in positioning Portugal as a global destination?

For more than 70 years, TAP has strengthened Portugal’s position as a global destination. We have been a pioneer, in aviation, in connecting Portugal to the world and the continents to each other, as Portugal did in the past.

We take on the mission of promoting the country and the best that it has, therefore we have several initiatives to promote Portugal across the world. For example, we named the regional fleet with the names of Portuguese districts and autonomous regions. We created the Taste the Stars programme with some of the best Portuguese chefs. We have invested in the wine training of our crew and created a new onboard menu to make our passengers’ flight experience even more unforgettable. We also created the Portugal Stopover programme. It gives the customer the possibility to stay up to five nights in Lisbon, or Oporto without paying the stopover fee, with added benefits from exclusive experiences, hotel discounts and lots of other offers. It also allows passengers to visit more of Portugal as they can have other Portuguese cities as final destinations, such as the Algarve, Madeira and Azores.

Philippine Airlines has started to reconfigure its Airbus A330-300 aircraft with a new three-class layout, which includes the introduction of its new premium economy class.

The national carrier previously packed 414 seats into its twin-aisle A330s, in an all-economy class layout. But in an effort to appeal to a broader range of customers, including the more lucrative premium sector, this configuration has now been switched to 309 seats in three cabins: business, premium economy and economy.

These reconfigured A330s entered service for the first time this week on the Manila-Honolulu route, and will be progressively introduced on services to Melbourne and Sydney in July and August respectively, then Singapore in September, Tokyo Haneda in October, Narita in November and Osaka in December.

“In Philippine Airlines, we aim to please. This inspired us to go through the process of providing our passengers a reconfigured aircraft with meticulous seat and IFE selection. As we journey on to becoming a five-star, world-class, full-service carrier… we devote our efforts towards meeting customer needs,” said PAL’s president & chief operating officer, Jaime Bautista.

The new premium economy seat

PAL’s revamped A330s come equipped with 18 business class seats, which recline to form fully-flat, 198cm-long beds, plus 24 premium economy class seats with 97cm of legroom and 267 economy class seats with an 81cm pitch. All seats come equipped with in-flight entertainment, USB ports and power sockets, plus access to in-flight Wi-Fi.

Eventually, PAL plans to configure all 15 of its A330s with the new three-class layout. This will allow the national carrier to differentiate itself from its main rival, Cebu Pacific, which squeezes 436 economy class seats into its A330-300s. PAL previously introduced premium economy onto its single-aisle A321 aircraft.

The Philippine low-cost carrier will upgrade its Cebu-Hong Kong and Davao-Hong Kong services from single-aisle, 180-seat Airbus A320s to the new twin-aisle, 436-seat A330s. The A330s are configured in an all-economy class layout.

In addition, from 4 July 2017, Cebu Pacific will be increasing the frequency of its Manila-Hong Kong from two to three daily flights.

“More seats and more flights in high-demand destinations will help lower fares for everyone. Moreover, using larger aircraft will make flying more efficient, freeing-up some aircraft and slots at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. This will also enable us to increase capacity and frequency for other routes moving forward,” said Atty JR Mantaring, Cebu Pacific’s vice president of corporate affairs.

Cebu Pacific now operates a fleet of 61 aircraft, including eight A330s, to a total of 37 domestic and 26 international destinations.

The route will operate from May 26, three times a week, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from London Gatwick to the Rwandan capital Kigali on a new Airbus A330-200.

Travellers will have the choice of Business, Premium Economy and Economy cabins. The flight time is 8 hours 40 minutes with return fares starting from GBP372.

Passengers travelling on the service in Business Class will be able to take advantage of fully-flat beds.

The launch of this direct service is the result of British travellers being among the top five nationalities that visit Rwanda, which welcomed 1.3 million visitors last year.

Visitor numbers are also rising due to the newly opened Kigali Convention Centre, which is driving the transformation of Kigali into a hub for Meetings, Incentive Conferences and Exhibitions. Rwanda has been named the third best MICE destination in Africa.

The chief tourism officer at the Rwanda Development Board, Ms. Belise Kariza, said: “Rwanda has seen a transformation in recent years and is now becoming one of the most sought-after destinations for premium travellers. With the new non-stop RwandAir flights to Kigali, and the opening of several premium lodges, Rwanda will be making a big impact as a must-visit country.”

Guy Stephenson, Gatwick Airport chief commercial officer, said: “This new service makes the adventure of a life time in the heart of Africa a real possibility for more people than ever before, be they spotting gorillas in the wild, game animals on safari or visiting the beautiful tea plantations.

“Rwanda is the latest long haul destination Gatwick serves and we now proudly boast more than 50 long haul routes in total – a claim few other international airports can make. Only last week Gatwick became the world’s top low cost airport, a ranking helped by our growing low cost long haul services to North America and the Far East.”

This year, One&Only will launch a new lodge in Nyungwe while Wilderness Safaris is due to open Bisate Lodge near Volcanoes National Park. Tour operators, such as Red Savannah, Expert Africa and Wild Frontiers, are also offering bespoke holidays and tours in the country.

AirAsia will introduce an Airbus A330 aircraft on two routes this month, marking the first time the short-haul low-cost carrier has utilised large, twin-aisle large aircraft.

From 19 April to 18 May 2017, the airline will deploy a 377-seat Airbus A330-300 aircraft on routes from Kuala Lumpur to the Maldives and Macau. These large jets will more than double the usual capacity of 180 seats offered by AirAsia’s traditional fleet of single-aisle A320s. The A330s are usually operated by long-haul unit AirAsia X.

The new aircraft will also see AirAsia offer its first premium cabins, with each A330 aircraft providing 12 flat-bed seats.

“Our flights to Maldives and Macau are strong performers and we are pleased to increase the capacity by deploying our Airbus A330 for the period of one month,” Spencer Lee, AirAsia’s head of commercial. “AirAsia as a group is serious about providing the best connectivity to our guests and we are able to make such changes by simply using the group’s assets better.

“This Airbus A330 will provide an increase of 197 seats per flight. We urge guests to use this opportunity to grab the hot deals with more seats, greater values and more services offered,” he added.

In addition to increasing capacity on routes to the Maldives and Macau, AirAsia is planning to add more flights to other popular short-haul destinations. Services from KL to Kaohsiung, Pontianak and Semarang will all increase to daily, while Danang will rise to 10 flights per week, Hanoi to 11 per week and Siem Reap to two flights per day.

Finally, the Malaysian LCC has started taking reservations for four brand new routes: KL-Bhubaneswar, Johor Bahru-Tawau, Johor Bahru-Langkawi and Kuching-Pontianak.

PAL will soon roll out premium cabins on its Airbus A330s

Philippine Airlines will enhance its Middle Eastern operations this month, with the launch of all-non-stop flights and premium seats on routes to seven destinations in the region.

Effective 26 March 2017, the national carrier will remove all stops from its Middle Eastern routes, offering direct services from Manila to Dubai, Doha, Kuwait, Jeddah, Abu Dhabi, Dammam and Riyadh. In total, the airline will offer 33 weekly return flights to the Middle East.

In addition, PAL will change the layout of the aircraft it operates on its Middle Eastern routes, providing premium cabin options. At present, the region is served using the airline’s 414-seat, all-economy class Airbus A330. But this will be progressively upgraded to a fleet of three-class A330s in the coming months, including premium economy seats and flat beds in business class.

These aircraft will be deployed on the Dubai route from 15 June, Abu Dhabi and Doha from 15 July, Riyadh from 15 August, and Kuwait and Jeddah from 15 September. Passengers will also be offered in-flight Wi-Fi and entertainment.

“The shift to bi-class service gives our passengers the flexibility to choose between regular economy, premium economy and business class service. Regardless of which class of service you choose, PAL will deliver its distinct brand of Filipino service,” said Jaime Bautista, president & chief operating officer of PAL.

The move to more premium cabins represents a strategic shift for PAL; instead of primarily targeting overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East, it now appears to seeking the premium market, including outbound traffic from the Gulf region. In line with this, onboard meals include halal options.

Iran Air has taken delivery of its first new long-haul aircraft from Airbus, as part of a huge order placed last year.

The new A330-200 marks the start of a major fleet renewal and expansion strategy for the Tehran-based national carrier, which expects to introduce 100 new Airbus jets into its fleet on the coming years. These include 46 single-aisle aircraft and 54 wide-body jets, including 38 A330s and 16 A350s.

The new A330 is configured with a two-cabin layout, seating 32 passengers in business class and 206 in economy.

Iran Air is planning to completely overhaul its fleet following the easing of EU and US sanctions against the Iranian government. At present, the airline operates a fleet of aging Airbus jets, including the A300 and A310, as well as Fokker 100s and McDonnell Douglas MD-82s.

Philippine Airlines will remove more than 100 seats from some of its aircraft in a bid to woo more premium passengers.

Eight of the national carrier’s 414-seat Airbus A330-300s will be reconfigured with a three-class layout, offering passengers a choice of business, premium economy and economy cabins. Following the revamp, each aircraft will feature just 309 seats – 105 fewer than before.

The 18 business class seats will be up to 61cm wide and recline into fully-flat, 198cm-long beds. All these seats will have direct aisle access, and Philippine Airlines will become the first Asian airline to feature seats with a “pneumatic comfort system”, which allows the passenger to adjust the seat’s firmness.

The 24 premium economy seats are 48cm wide and have 97cm of legroom, while the 267 economy class seats are 43cm wide and have 81cm of legroom. Passengers in all cabins will have access to USB ports and in-seat power outlets, touch-screen in-flight entertainment systems, and Wi-Fi. They will also be able to download the IFE content to their own tablets or smartphones using the myPAL Player app.

“As we journey on to becoming a five-star, world-class, full-service carrier… we devote our efforts towards enhancing the total travel experience. Our cabin reconfiguration efforts combined with meticulous seat and IFE selection are in line with our goal to make each and every flight pleasant, comfortable and convenient,” said Philippine Airlines’ president & chief operating officer Jaime Bautista.

The eight reconfigured A330s will be progressively rolled out over a period of seven months from June 2017, on routes to Honolulu, Melbourne, Sydney, Singapore, Tokyo (Haneda and Narita) and Osaka.

Airbus has delivered its first A330-300 Regional – a new variation of the twin-aisle passenger jet designed for high volume domestic and short-haul routes.

The aircraft, which was first announced in 2013, has a higher seat capacity and lower weight, making it more efficient to operate on short hops of up to 5,000km, or five hours flying time.

Saudi Arabian Airlines has become the launch customer for the new aircraft, having placed an order for 20 A330-300 Regionals at the 2015 Paris Airshow. These aircraft will join Saudia’s existing fleet of 12 A330-300s.

“We are excited to welcome the first A330-300 Regional to our fast-expanding Airbus fleet. It is a step forward in recognising our commitment to a family of aircraft which has contributed immensely to our market growth. The advantage of operating the new regional version of such a popular aircraft with proven operational flexibility and lowest cost per seat means unbeatable economics for our business and our customers,” said Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, Saudia’s director general.

The A330-300 Regional was initially designed for high-volume domestic markets such as China and India, although no carriers in these countries have so far placed orders for the model.

Air France's new business class seat

Air France has revealed the next phase of its long-haul cabin improvement programme, with the revamp of its Airbus A330 fleet.

The airline’s entire fleet of A330-200 aircraft will be refitted with new interior products, in a project that will run from late 2017 to the end of 2018.

Once the EUR140 million (U159m) programme is complete, each A330-200 will be able to carry 226 passengers, with 30 new flat-bed seats in business class seats, 21 seats in premium economy and 175 in economy. This marks an increase of 18 seats from the currently capacity, with 10 business class seats being removed to make way for 28 more economy class seats.

The project follows on from the ongoing revamp of the airline’s fleet of Boeing 777s.

“Since the first flight equipped with the ‘Best’ cabins to New York in June 2014, they have been highly acclaimed by our customers. If Air France is back among the best global airlines, this is partly thanks to our very high quality products and services. Equipping our Airbus A330 fleet with these cabins is the next logical step in the move upmarket of Air France’s products and services,” said Frédéric Gagey, chairman & CEO of Air France.

The new “cocoon”-style business class seats recline to form two-metre long beds, while the premium economy seats offer more legroom and recline 130-degree from upright. In economy, the new seat offers more legroom, new headrests and wider tray tables. And all seats come equipped with touch-screen in-flight entertainment systems.

Iran has embarked on a new era of modern aviation with the placement of a huge aircraft order with Airbus.

Signed during Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s official visit to France, national carrier Iran Air has purchased a total of 118 commercial aircraft, including 12 double-decker A380s. The deal was signed at the Élysée Palace in Paris in the presence of French President François Hollande.

“The skies have cleared for Iran’s flying public and Airbus is proud to welcome Iran’s commercial aviation back into the international civil aviation community. Today is a significant step in the overhaul and modernisation of Iran’s commercial aviation sector and Airbus stands ready to play its role in supporting it,” said Fabrice Brégier, president & CEO of Airbus.

The total deal, which is worth more than US$25 billion at list prices, comprises 45 single-aisle aircraft – 21 A320s and 24 A320neos – plus 73 twin-aisle jets, including 27 A330s, 18 A330-900neos, 16 A350-1000s and 12 A380s. The agreement also includes pilot and maintenance training and support services.

These new jets will replace Iran Air’s existing fleet of 43 aging Airbus A300, A310, A320 and Boeing 747 aircraft.

“Today’s announcement is the start of re-establishing our civil aviation sector into the envy of the region and along with partners like Airbus we’ll ensure the highest world standards,” said Farhad Parvaresh, Iran Air’s chairman & CEO.

And the Airbus deal could be just the beginning for Iran. The country’s Tasnim news agency recently reported Abbas Akhondi, Iran’s Minister of Road & Urban Development, as saying that the country will need up to 500 new aircraft in the coming years, and that it is in discussions with Boeing as well as Airbus.

“We have held negotiations with Boeing in this regard,” the minister was quoted saying.

Yangtze River Airlines, the Shanghai-based cargo carrier than recently launched its first passenger services, is planning to launch long-haul international flights.

The airline intends to introduce 20 twin-aisle Airbus A330 aircraft into its fleet in the next few years, with a view to expanding into the long-haul sector.

The move is a strategic step for Yangtze River Airlines’ parent company, HNA Group, which currently operates a large network of international flights from Beijing with Hainan Airlines.

Hainan Airlines does operate some routes from Shanghai, including trans-Pacific services to Boston and Seattle, but the Shanghai long-haul market is still dominated by China Eastern Airlines and, to a lesser extent, Air China.

Yangtze River Airlines launched its first passenger flights on 15 December, on the domestic routes to Sanya, Zhuhai and Guiyang. It plans to expand its domestic operations in 2016, following the delivery of nine more Boeing 737 aircraft.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has taken delivery of new aircraft that will be suitable for its long-haul routes to Asia.

The airline becomes the first European carrier to receive a new version of the Airbus A330-300 which offers an extended range and increased take-off weight. Aerodynamic upgrades allow the twin-aisle aircraft to fly up to 6,100 nautical miles (11,297km) while burning up to 2% less fuel.

Christopher Buckley, SAS’ executive vice president for Africa, Europe & Asia Pacific, said the new aircraft would be ideally suited to the airline’s Asian routes.

“This longer-range A330 will fit seamlessly into SAS’s current fleet alongside their current A330s, and will pave the way for their A350s in the future,” said Buckley. “The A330’s higher take-off weight allows the airline to fly new Asian routes, with an operational reliability of well over 99%.”

SAS currently operates a fleet of four A330-300s and eight A340s on its long-haul routes, and has outstanding orders for three more A330-300s and eight new A350-900s.

Earlier this month, SAS launched a new route connecting Stockholm with Hong Kong. This marked the airline’s fourth Asian route, following Beijing, Shanghai and Tokyo.

Qantas has unveiled a series of new domestic and international services for Queensland.

Following the recent announcement of its new BrisbaneTokyo Narita service, which starts in August 2015, Qantas has now decided to operate the route daily, rather than four times a week as initially promised.

The airline was considering an alternative city from which to operate the remaining three weekly services, but has now opted to use Brisbane for all seven weekly flights.

And the Australian carrier has also unveiled two new domestic routes for Queensland, connecting Melbourne with the Whitsunday Coast and Hamilton Island.

Launching on 25 June 2015, the Melbourne-Whitsunday Coast route will be operated by Jetstar three times a week (Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays). Then on 27 June, Qantas will start flying the Melbourne-Hamilton Island route twice a week (Saturdays and Sundays).

“This is great news for Qantas customers who now have a range of new, direct travel options on our international and domestic network,” said Qantas’ regional manager for Queensland, Peter Collyns. “We’ve worked closely with Brisbane Airport to increase our upcoming Tokyo route to a daily service. This is a big positive for local tourism because it makes Queensland even more accessible to Japanese travellers.

“Qantas customers now have a direct premium service from Melbourne to Hamilton Island, and Jetstar will offer the only low fares between Melbourne and the Whitsunday Coast Airport,” he added.

All Qantas’ Brisbane-Narita flights will be operated using an Airbus A330 aircraft, while the Hamilton Island route will use a Boeing 737. Jetstar will deploy an A320 on the new Whitsunday Coast service.

Qantas’ first upgraded international Airbus A330 aircraft took to the skies on Saturday, on the route from Melbourne to Singapore.

The revamped A330 feature flat-bed seats in business class, including a unique design feature that allows passengers to recline in their seat throughout the entire flight, from take-off to landing. A new type of Recaro seat has been introduced in economy class, and all passengers will be offered modern in-flight entertainment technology and improved onboard meals.

“When you combine our investment in lounges with what we’re offering on board our upgraded A330s, it puts Qantas in a very strong position to retain and win customers on key routes to Asia,” said Qantas’ group CEO Alan Joyce.

The roll-out of the first reconfigured international A330 follows the introduction of Qantas’ new domestic A330s last month.
“Our first domestic aircraft has been operating for a little more than two weeks and we have received rave reviews from crew and our passengers. Some have said it’s the best domestic business experience in the world.

“On top of the two years of research and development, more than 200 engineers and support staff at our Brisbane hangar are working on the reconfiguration programme, with around 10,000 hours spent on each international aircraft,” Joyce added.

More than half of Qantas’ 28 A330 aircraft are expected to be refurbished by the end of December 2015, with the project to be fully completed by the end of 2016.

Hawaiian Airlines has signed a firm order with Airbus for its newest long-haul jet, the A330neo.

Earlier this year the Honolulu-based carrier penned a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for six new A330-800neo aircraft, with deliveries starting in 2019. This deal has now been confirmed, replacing a previous order for six A350-800s.

The A330-800neo is the new fuel-efficient replacement for the A330-200 aircraft. If configured in a similar arrangement to Hawaiian’s existing A330-200s, the new aircraft will seat 294 passengers in a two-class configuration.

“The A330-800neo is an aircraft which meets all of our needs,” said Mark Dunkerley, president & CEO of Hawaiian Airlines. “It is the right size, with the right range and costs, and shares much commonality with our A330-200 fleet. Our customers and crew love the aircraft and we are thrilled that it will continue to be Hawaiian’s wide-body mainstay for far into the future.”

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the aircraft have a total list-price value of approximately US$2.9 billion.

Hawaiian currently operates a fleet of 50 aircraft, including 29 long-haul aircraft. It also has outstanding orders for three new A330-200s for delivery in 2015 and 16 single-aisle A321neo aircraft, which will arrive from 2017.

Qantas will add 14 more weekly flights to Tokyo from summer 2015

Qantas will launch two new daily flights to Tokyo next year, in a major expansion of services into Japan.

Commencing on 31 July 2015, the Australian carrier will operate a new daily service from Sydney to Tokyo Haneda Airport. Then a day later on 1 August, it will launch four weekly flights from Brisbane to Tokyo Narita.

Qantas will add 14 more weekly flights to Tokyo from summer 2015
Qantas will add 14 more weekly flights to Tokyo from summer 2015

The Brisbane flight will also be complemented by another direct route to Narita, operating on the remaining three days of the week from an as-yet-unspecified Australian city.

The announcement was made by group CEO Alan Joyce at Qantas’ maintenance facility in Brisbane, where work is being carried out to re-fit the interiors of 28 Qantas Airbus A330s.

Once the work is complete, the A330s, which will feature new flat-bed seats in business class, upgraded economy class seating and new in-flight entertainment, will be deployed on the Brisbane-Narita route.

“We are delighted to offer Qantas customers a choice of four weekly services from Brisbane to Tokyo beginning in August next year,” Joyce said. “This is great news for Brisbane customers wanting to visit Japan but it’s also great news for tourism because it makes Queensland even more accessible to Japanese travellers.

“We expect the Sydney to Haneda services to be particularly popular with business travellers, and this traffic is likely to keep growing off the back of the free trade agreement between Australia and Japan,” he added.

In total, Qantas will add more than 4,000 weekly seats to Japan next year on 14 return flights using a combination of Boeing 747-400s (to Haneda) and A330s (to Narita).

Qantas currently operates daily flights between Sydney and Narita, so the 14 extra weekly flights will mark a 200% increase in the number of services the airline operates to Tokyo.

Qantas’ low-cost subsidiary, Jetstar, also flies a number of routes to Japan, including Cairns-Narita, Cairns-Osaka, Melbourne-Narita and Gold Coast-Narita. These flights will remain unchanged for 2015.

“Combined with Jetstar flights… into Japan, the services the Qantas Group offers put us in a very strong position when it comes to both leisure and premium travel to the world’s third largest economy,” Joyce said.

Airbus will start producing large long-haul aircraft in China, following the signing of an agreement with its partners in the country.

A Letter of Intent (LoI) has been agreed with the Tianjin Free Trade Zone (TJFTZ) and the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) to set up a ‘Completion and Delivery Centre’ in Tianjin for the wide-body A330 aircraft series.

Airbus will set up a ‘Completion and Delivery Centre’ for the A330 series in Tianjin

This will add to the existing assembly line and delivery centre for the smaller A320 aircraft, which Airbus already operates with its partners in Tianjin.

The LoI was signed in Berlin on Friday by Fabrice Brégier, Airbus’ president & CEO, Feng Zhijiang, TJFTZ’s president, and Lin Zuoming, president of AVIC, and witnessed by the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and visiting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

The A330 centre in Tianjin is expected to cover the final stages of aircraft production, including cabin installation, aircraft painting, engine runs and aircraft delivery. The aircraft will be assembled in Toulouse before flying to China for the finishing touches.

“In its 30 years history the Airbus partnership with China keeps on growing and expanding. The intended establishment of an A330 Completion and Delivery Centre will add a new exciting chapter to our longstanding track record of mutual achievements,” said Bregier.

At present, Chinese airlines and companies operate a fleet of approximately 1,000 Airbus aircraft, including around 140 A330s. But Airbus forecasts demand for more than 5,300 new commercial aircraft in China over the next 20 years.

Airbus is also now developing a new version of the A330, the A330neo, which will offer greater fuel-efficiency.

Boeing and Airbus have begun a war of words in time for the start of Farnborough air show this week.

An upgrade of the A330 is being discussed.
An upgrade of the A330 is being discussed.

Airbus is about to launch its upgrade of the popular A330, but Boeing vice president of marketing Randy Tinseth fired an early shot by claiming the newer 787 Dreamliner was a more valuable plane.

“We have more value and have to sell our value, but we will fight, there is no doubt about that,” he asserted. “But we also have a better product with better value and that is the card we will play.”

Airbus is planning on introducing new Rolls-Royce engines that it claims will make the jet 14% more fuel efficient.

But the figure was brought into question by Tinseth who called it “extraordinarily optimistic”.

He added that the possibility of the new A330neo was an indication that Airbus’s A350 strategy had failed.

Responding in the Wall Street Journal, Airbus customers operating chief John Leahy said it was “wishful thinking” by Boeing that an A330neo would flop.

“They said the same about our A320 a few years ago, yet it became the fastest selling aircraft in aviation history,” he added.

Airbus is launching a new fuel-efficient version of its popular wide-body aircraft, the A330.

The new A330-800neo and A330-900neo will replace the existing A330-200 and A330-300 models, incorporating new engines that burn less fuel and a range of new cabin features. The neo suffix stands for ‘new engine option’, referring to the Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines that will be used to power the aircraft.

“The A330 is a very important margin contributor for our group. It’s also one of the most reliable and efficient commercial aircraft ever,” said Tom Enders, CEO of Airbus Group.”With our decision to re-engine the plane, we will keep the A330 flying high for many more years to come.”

In addition to the new engines, Airbus said it will improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the A330, including some design features introduced on the new A350, such as an increased wing span and upturned wing-tips. The passenger cabin will be reconfigured to offer approximately 10 more seats than the existing A330s, along with mood-lighting and in-flight connectivity.

Airbus is promising a 14% reduction in fuel-consumption per seat on the new A330, allowing the aircraft to compete with Boeing’s new fuel-efficient models, the B787 Dreamliner and B777-X. Deliveries of the A330neo are expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2017.

“The A330neo is the logical evolution of our reliable and versatile A330 family,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus’ president & CEO. “We see strong market potential for the A330neo, and like its market-leading smaller sister, the A320neo, we are confident this new aircraft will be a success in the medium-haul segment. We are again leveraging a proven aircraft with a wide operator base and making it even more efficient with the latest innovations and technology developments.”

Airbus is also in the process of developing the new single-aisle A320neo and twin-aisle A350 aircraft, both of which will offer three different-sized variants.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has unveiled its new business class cabin products.

The national carrier has taken delivery of its first new Airbus A330-300 aircraft to be equipped with two classes, including the brand new business class cabin which includes flat-bed seats and a wireless in-flight entertainment system. This follows the introduction of its new economy class seats last year.

“The advent of the bi-class A330… completes our menu of new product offerings,” said PAL’s president Ramon Ang. “This sophisticated aircraft is aimed at the discriminating business segment of the market, an important part of PAL’s customer base.”

The new two-class A330 can seat 368 passengers, including 18 in the new business class cabin. The new Sogerma Equinox 3D seat stretches out to form a fully-flat bed which is more than six-feet (183cm) long and nearly two feet wide. The seats also include an electronic leg rests, retractable dividers, in-seat power outlets, USB ports, reading lights and storage space.

The new wireless in-flight entertainment system allows passengers to stream movies, TV programmes, music and apps to their own personal electronic devices. The A330s will also come equipped with in-flight Wi-Fi.

“Once again, PAL is pioneering the way entertainment is experienced at 30,000 feet,” said Ang. “Through wireless technology, we are able to enhance and personalise our IFE offerings, and deliver these straight to the passenger’s own gadget.”

The new two-class A330s will initially be deployed on services to Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Nagoya and Seoul.

Filipino low cost carrier Cebu Pacific has taken delivery of its second Airbus A330.

The 436-seater aircraft will fly on select routes to Cebu and Hong Kong from 16 September until 4 October.

From 7 October the aircraft will run daily flights between Manila and Dubai, its first long-haul service.

“Cebu Pacific is proud to continue offering flights on the lowest fares, utilizing the newest aircraft. Our second  brand-new Airbus A330 aircraft from Toulouse, France not only increases the number of seats available to Hong Kong and Cebu, but also features Airbus’ fuel-saving technology that allows us to keep our fares low,” said CEB vice president for marketing & distribution Candice Iyog.

“Cebu Pacific’s expansion means more flight options and low fares available to our guests. It is always rewarding for us when these additional flights and seats contribute to the tourism and trade in the destinations we fly to,” Iyog added.
