Air India Express and AirAsia India announce the launch of their Unaccompanied Minor (UMNR) service, a dedicated and safe travel option for young flyers between the ages of five (5) and twelve (12) years, enabling them to travel across all direct sectors. The service, which was offered on international flights, has been enhanced and extended to domestic sectors as well, providing parents and guardians the comfort and peace of mind that these young travellers will be taken special care of and have a seamless and enjoyable travel experience. The Unaccompanied Minor service can be booked on the airline’s website, airindiaexpress.com, or airport sales counters at a starting price of ₹5,000.

Offering dedicated assistance, young flyers will be welcomed personally by the airline staff at the terminal before the airport security checks and assisted throughout all the regulated travel formalities at the airport. A valid photo identification document for both the child and the parent or guardian is required at departure and arrival for verification, and the parent or guardian is required to accompany the child to the airport and arrive at least 2 hours before the scheduled departure for domestic flights. On arrival, airline staff will accompany and assist the child through the airport arrival process until they are safely reunited with their parent or guardian.

Talking about the launch, Ankur Garg, Chief Commercial Officer, shared, “We are always looking for ways to enhance the travel experience of our guests. With the extension of Unaccompanied Minor services to all our domestic sectors, we aim to provide a comfortable and welcoming flying experience to young explorers travelling solo. The well-being of our young flyers is of paramount importance to us,  and our dedicated staff will ensure a seamless and secure journey for young travellers from check-in till arrival.”

The unaccompanied minor services are the latest in a host of integrated product and service offerings extended by Air India Express and AIX Connect in the run-up to their merger. The airlines are widely credited for offering a delicious range of oven-hot meals as part of the in-flight dining brand, ‘Gourmair’ including kids meals, healthy, vegan and Jain options, MasterChef Specials, Regional Favourites, All-Day Breakfast, Seasonal Fruits, Lite Bites and Delectable Desserts.

The sale coincides with the airline’s annual celebrations of the birth anniversary of ‘The Pioneer’ JRD Tata, commemorating with a series of on-ground, in-flight and digital activities honouring the father of Indian Civil Aviation.

Both Air India Express and AirAsia India will be distributing themed postcards at airports and in-flight. Flyers are invited to pen messages to their loved ones and the airline has offered to deliver these postcards on behalf of their guests, commemorating the airmail carried by JRD Tata on his historic inaugural flight from Karachi to Mumbai in 1932. The design of the postcards pays tribute to JRD Tata’s passion for writing, as he famously wrote over 40,000 letters during his lifetime. The postcard features an image from the Tata Central Archives, depicting JRD Tata at his writing desk and showcases the custom font ‘Jeh’, inspired by his handwriting.

JRD Tata holds a significant place in India’s aviation history, having personally piloted the country’s first commercial flight from Karachi to Bombay via Ahmedabad on 15 October 1932 on a single-engine Puss Moth aircraft. This monumental event and the advent of civil aviation in India is also commemorated on the livery of the airline’s aircraft, VT-JRT, dubbed ‘The Pioneer’.

JRD Tata was also a culinary connoisseur and his love of experimenting with flavours, inspired the ‘Pioneer’s Picks’ section of the award winning in-flight dining menu ‘Gourmair’, now served on both domestic and international flights of Air India Express and AirAsia India. One of the highlights of the Gourmair menu is the ‘Herb Grilled Fish Fillet,’ a scrumptious dish featuring smoky grilled fish fillet with a unique twist on the classic French velouté sauce. It is served alongside creamy mashed potatoes and sautéed greens, making it a perfect pre-booked meal choice for seafood enthusiasts.

In a significant development in the decarbonization of the aviation sector, India’s first commercial passenger flight using an indigenously produced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blend was successfully flown earlier today. AirAsia India flight i5-767 departed from Pune to New Delhi using a blend of indigenous Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supplied by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) in partnership with Praj Industries Ltd. (Praj). Hon. Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, received this special flight at the airport.

This flight is a significant milestone in the country’s efforts towards sustainable aviation and demonstrates the commitment of the Air India group, IOCL, and Praj Industries, with the support and guidance of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, to develop and propagate indigenous solutions to mitigate the environmental impact of aviation and pave the way for the widespread adoption of SAF in India. In keeping with the country’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan mission, the SAF was produced indigenously by Praj Industries using captive agricultural feedstock.

The SAF sourced for this initiative by Praj Industries, is in partnership with Gevo Inc., which has developed a breakthrough Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology for the production of SAF using bio-based feedstock. Praj produced SAF samples in its R&D facility, Praj Matrix, which underwent detailed testing at IOCL laboratories before it was blended for the special flight.

Describing the occasion as a significant milestone in the country’s efforts towards Net Zero emissions by 2070,  Puri said, “I am glad to witness this historic occasion and receive the first commercial flight fuelled by an indigenous SAF blended ATF. This would be the First domestic commercial passenger flight with SAF blending up to 1% as demonstration mode”. “By 2025, if we target to blend 1% SAF blending in Jet fuel, India would require around 14 crore litres of SAF/annum.  More ambitiously, if we target for 5% SAF blend, India requires around 70 crore litre of SAF/annum.”

Congratulating the home grown giants in their respective sectors, AirAsia India, IndianOil, and Praj Industries, Shri Puri reiterated the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister for an Atmanirbhar Bharat by developing indigenous solutions to mitigate the environmental impact of aviation and pave the way for the widespread adoption of SAF in India.

Speaking about the initiative,  Aloke Singh, Managing Director, AirAsia India and Air India Express, said, “We are proud to announce that AirAsia India has successfully completed the first commercial flight using a blend of sustainable aviation fuel in collaboration with IOCL and Praj Industries. As part of the Tata group and a subsidiary of Air India, we are committed to innovation and collaboration in order to mitigate environmental impact. This flight marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts towards a more sustainable future for Indian aviation. We hope that this initiative will serve to further the adoption of indigenous, sustainable aviation fuel. Sustainability is deeply ingrained in our organisation’s DNA, and we are determined to continue on the path towards more sustainable operations.”

Speaking on this development,  Pramod Chaudhari, Founder Chairman, Praj Industries, said, “Showcasing the capability to fly using locally produced SAF is a historic moment for India. This is another demonstration of the important role of the farming community, by way of Annadata to Urjadata, in India’s journey towards energy independence and green growth. We value our ongoing partnership with IOCL and are delighted that, on this occasion, AirAsia has joined us in the journey towards cleaner skies for tomorrow.“

Vaidya, Chairman, IndianOil, stated, “As the largest energy PSU in the country, IndianOil is committed to leading the change in the oil & gas sector and ushering in a greener tomorrow.” “Aligned with the vision of our Hon’ble Prime Minister, IndianOil has pledged for Net Zero Emissions by 2046. Under the aegis of MoPNG, we have begun this journey today, and I am confident that SAF will soon become the norm rather than an exception in the aviation industry. Mr. Vaidya added.

Global aviation is currently responsible for about 3% of total global GHG emissions. If the emission remains unchecked, it could be responsible for 22% of GHG emissions by 2050. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has released Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) regulations that have defined a target of reducing CO2 emissions from the aviation sector by 50% by 2050. An alternative to the current use of fossil fuels is to use SAF that can result in high greenhouse gas (GHG) savings.

AirAsia India, in collaboration with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), integrates the Pilot’s Flight Duty Logbook directly from its Crew Management system to the eGCA platform. The eGCA platform provides end-to-end solutions and connectivity with regional offices to improve transparency and accountability across all functions of DGCA.

This initiative, as part of DGCA’s digitization program, will eliminate the need for pilots to hand-fill their flight and simulator duties carried out during their career in physical logbooks, thereby improving efficiency and transparency. Pilots were traditionally required to update their Pilot LogBook in physical logbooks, as required by the MOCA’s Aircraft Rule, 1937 (67A). However, with the integration of AirAsia India’s Crew Management system with eGCA’s LogBook API (Application Program Interface), this process will now be digitised, making it simpler, more user-friendly, and more sustainable.

Talking about this initiative, Capt. Manish Uppal, head of operations, AirAsia India, said, “We are proud to collaborate with DGCA in integrating our Crew Management System with eGCA’s LogBook API. This initiative is a significant step towards improving the efficiency and transparency of the aviation industry and also contributing to sustainability. By eliminating the need for pilots to manually update their Pilot LogBooks, we are simplifying the process and making it more user-friendly. This initiative in conjunction with DGCA is a testament to our commitment to innovation and digitization, and we are excited to continue working towards making services simpler and more user-friendly for pilots.”

eGCA provides 298 services, including pilot licensing, with the goal of adding value to DGCA safety regulation, eliminating operational inefficiencies, improving personal interaction, regulatory reporting, increasing productivity, and increasing transparency. With this partnership, AirAsia India and DGCA are striving to make services simpler and more user-friendly for pilots, while also enhancing the overall efficiency and transparency of the aviation industry.

In addition to providing accurate real-time pilot flying hours, this integration will also facilitate the timely submission of applications for pilot licensing, renewal, and endorsement by eliminating multiple data validation steps. As manual intervention in the process is significantly reduced, this will result in faster processing of applications, as the verification of flying data in submitted applications will be considerably streamlined. This initiative will greatly benefit both pilots and DGCA, improving the efficiency and accuracy of the licensing process

Singapore Airlines (SIA) said that it is exploring a potential merger of Vistara with Tata Group’s Air India. Tata Group has a 51 per cent stake in Vistara, while SIA holds the balance 49 per cent, as per  a news report in the  Financial Express.

This is the first time that SIA has officially acknowledged that it is in talks with Tata Group on the possibility of merging the two airlines. “The discussions seek to deepen the existing partnership between SIA and Tata, and may include a potential integration of Vistara and Air India,” SIA said in a statement to the Singapore Stock Exchange. “The discussions are ongoing and no definitive terms have been agreed upon between the parties,” it added.

It is unclear at this stage what stake, if any, SIA would have if Vistara merges into Air India, or whether fresh funds would be needed for Air India. Still, the change of stance by SIA is significant as it did not agree to partner Tata Group when the latter was bidding for Air India. Tatas had expected that SIA would join it and it would bid for the state-owned carrier through Vistara. Though, SIA did not agree to it, it waived the no-compete clause, which enabled Tata Group to go ahead with its bid for Air India.

The integration of Vistara with Air India will create the second largest airline in the country, after IndiGo. The Tata Group is also merging its other airline, AirAsia India with Air India Express. The Competition Commission of India has approved this merger.

Tata Sons chairman, N Chandrasekaran has often said that the Group’s airline businesses, which operate on thin margins, must be consolidated to ensure operational efficiencies and cost control.

“We will definitely have both full service and low-cost carrier,” Chandrasekaran said few days ago at a public function. “It’s a long journey. We will have to work on many aspects of the airline and we are working at great speed. Essentially, we will have one airline with two platforms,” he had added.

As one of the key initiatives during Tata Sustainability Month, AirAsia India flagged off the commencement of TaxiBot operations at Bengaluru International Airport, following successful trials and subsequent implementation at Delhi International Airport.

With the commencement of TaxiBot operations in Delhi in February this year, AirAsia India became the first airline globally to initiate TaxiBot services with passengers onboard on modified aircraft.

TaxiBot is a semi-robotic aircraft towing device that is a green alternative to save fuel, reduce CO₂ emissions and noise pollution, decrease aircraft wear and tear, and minimise instances of Jet Blast and Foreign Object Damage, improving efficiency and enhancing safety in the parking area.

“WE are the first airline globally to initiate TaxiBot services on modified aircraft with passengers onboard. Following the successful trials and implementation in Delhi, we are delighted to be commencing TaxiBot operations at our largest hub, Bangalore, as well. In addition to driving the adoption of sustainable aviation, TaxiBot leverages technology to drive differentiation and efficiency in operations, leading the way forward for a cleaner and greener ecosystem,” said Sunil Bhaskaran, MD and CEO, AirAsia India.

Tata Group’s AirAsia India (AAIPL) has lastly bought the nod to function its first worldwide flight this month, almost eight years after it began operations.

The low price service, wherein Tatas personal 83. 6% and will shortly purchase the remaining 16. 4% from Malaysian AirAsia Berhad, will function a non-scheduled cargo flight on Kochi-Dubai-Kochi route.

The airline’s first flight was in June 2014 and it achieved a fleet dimension of 20 plane in December 2018. It then met the 0/20 rule — no minimal requirement on variety of years in operation and at the least 20 plane in fleet — to fly overseas. However quite a lot of instances over the airline’s efficient management prevented the federal government from giving that clearance.

Tata Group has increased its stake in AirAsia India as the conglomerate looks to increase its share in the domestic aviation sector. The company announced it would increase its holdings in the Indian-based joint venture with AirAsia from 51% to 84%.

AirAsia, owned by Malaysian tycoon Tony Fernandes, has been scaling back its operations during the Covid-19 pandemic. Last week, Tata also put in a bid for control of the struggling national carrier Air India.

The government has been seeking a buyer for part of the loss-making flag-carrier for a number of years.

Tata Group is paying AirAsia around £30 million for the increased stake in the AirAsia India joint venture which began in 2014. The deal puts the Indian conglomerate firmly in command of the budget carrier. AirAsia has been looking to reduce its cash-burn and its Japan unit filed for bankruptcy last month.

The Tata Group – widely known as the Tatas in India – which also owns Jaguar Land Rover, originally founded the Air India airline in 1932 but sold its stake to the government in the 1950s.

Tata also operates the Vistara airline in partnership with Singapore Airlines.

AirAsia India has announced plans to strengthen its regional service today. Following the recent grounding of Jet Airways the airline plans to fulfill customer demand for destinations in key markets like Mumbai and Delhi by leasing nine narrow-bodied Airbus A320s by 2020 — taking its domestic fleet number up to thirty.

The airline, a joint venture between Tata Sons and Malaysia-based AirAsia Berhad, received eight slots at Mumbai airport that were earlier operated by Jet. AirAsia has gained 40 basis points (bps) to 6.3% between March and May mainly on account of Jet’s grounding from April 17. Low-cost carrier SpiceJet has been aggressively adding aircraft to operate on Jet’s vacant routes. It has inducted over 30 aircraft, earlier flown by the full-service carrier.

According to aviation consultancy firm Capa India, around 800 weekly slots have become available in Delhi and Mumbai alone, creating opportunities for airlines to increase their presence in these important markets.

AirAsia has been awaiting civil aviation ministry’s nod for international operations since January. The carrier’s overseas permit is held up due to ongoing investigations into alleged lobbying for change in government’s foreign flying norms for domestic carriers. This relates to scrapping of 5/20 rule in June 2016.

Following raids on AirAsia’s India offices in Mumbai on 29 May, investigating allegations of corruption and bribery, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation has summoned CEO Tony Fernandes for questioning on 6 June, according to an article in the Financial Express

The CBI case, also against AirAsia India’s non-executive director R Venkataramanan and CEO of operations Bo Lingam, concerns accusations that the flamboyant CEO is guilty of violating Indian direct investment laws and alleged bribery of government officials to ease legislation and provide a license to operate within the country.

The article also states “A total of 14 people, including some former and current employees of AirAsia, have been named in the charge sheet. This includes the airline’s former CEO Mittu Chandilya, his secretary, and the current and the former CFO of the airline, Deepak Mahendra and Vijay Gopalan.”

Commenting on its investigations the CBI said the airline and its CEO “chose to beat the legal frameworks and policies of the aviation sector of India” and improperly courted government administrators “to secure mandatory approvals, some of them through non-transparent means”.

AirAsia India has said in an official statement that it denies all charges and that will work with officials agencies “to present the correct facts”.

However, the airline’s stance on the matter has been undermined by Fernandes’ apparently unconnected comments via his Twitter account, where he declared: “Sometimes wonder about certain media. Who just wrote anything without checking any facts. Seriously wild stuff which are just plain wrong and inaccurate.”

My own requests to AirAsia India for comment on the situation have so far been met with silence.

It has been four years since the AirAsia first entered the Indian domestic market with a view to quickly establish its international services in the country. However these plans were hindered by aviation laws stating an airline must operate on a domestic basis for at least five years – with a minimum fleet size of 20 planes) before scaling up to international services.

Subsequently, in 2017, the five year probation period has been removed, but it is these rules which are at the heart of the charges. With the CBI believing the airline and its leadership sought to operate as an international carrier from the moment it began to operating in India.

Another eye catching name in the case is R Venkataramanan, who, in addition  to his role for the airline, is the managing trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust an organisation responsible for AirAsia’s majority owners Tata Group.

“I have been wrongly named as an accused”

Commenting on his involvement in the scandal Venkataramanan said: “In my capacity as non-executive director of AirAsia India Limited, I have been wrongly named as an accused by the CBI on operational matters where I had little or no role to play.”

AirAsia India is aiming to launch international operations later this year, following the expansion of its fleet.

The Economic Times reported the low-cost carrier’s CEO, Amar Abrol, as saying that he is targeting a fleet size of 20 aircraft by September or October 2017, enabling it to launch international flights.

Under Indian regulations, airlines must have at least 20 aircraft before they are eligible to fly overseas. Previously, Indian carriers were also required to operate domestic routes for five years before going international, but this so-called “5/20” rule was eased last year.

AirAsia India launched its first flights in June 2014 and currently flies to 14 domestic destinations using a fleet of 10 Airbus A320 aircraft. This means that to achieve the international launch schedule targeted by Abrol, the LCC would have to double its fleet in the next two-to-three months. The AirAsia Group currently has outstanding orders for almost 400 Airbus aircraft.

AirAsia India’s international expansion is expected to commence with flights to destinations in Southeast Asia, where the AirAsia Group is already strong.

Last year, AirAsia India carried a total of 2.45 million passengers, which marked a 68% jump compared to 2015, with an average load factor of 86%. And Abrol said that the airline would adhere to its previous target of doubling its passenger traffic this year.

For the three months to 31 March, the airline carried a total of 840,000 passengers, up 57% compared to the same period last year. This growth outpaced a 50% increase in seat capacity, allowing AirAsia India’s average load factor (or the number of seats filled per flight) to rise three percentage points to 89%.

Three new routes, linking Delhi with Srinagar, Bagdogra and Pune, were launched in the quarter, while the frequency of the Delhi-Goa route was increased. By the end of the quarter, the LCC’s fleet had increased to nine aircraft.

The Indian performance contributed to a strong first quarter for the AirAsia Group; in total AirAsia’s five short-haul budget airlines carried a total of 15.23 million passengers in Q1 2017, up 9% year-on-year.

AirAsia broke through the 50 million passenger barrier again in 2016, as demand for its short-haul flights continued to flourish.

The low-cost carrier group boarded a total of 56.59m passengers last year, 12% more than in 2015. This growth rate far exceeded a 4% expansion of seat capacity, which allowed AirAsia’s average load factor to jump six percentage points to a strong 86%. At the end of 2016, the group operated a total of 172 aircraft.

Malaysia AirAsia remains the largest of the group’s subsidiaries, handling 26.41m passengers in 2016, up 9% year-on-year, while Thai AirAsia’s passenger numbers jumped 16% to 17.22m. Indonesia AirAsia’s traffic was flat at 6.52m passengers, and Philippines AirAsia saw a 19% surge in traffic, to 1.04m.

And the youngest of the group’s subsidiaries, AirAsia India, achieved a 68% jump in passenger traffic, to 2.45m. AirAsia Japan, which was supposed to relaunch last year, still hasn’t got off the ground.

AirAsia’s expansion will continue in future; the group still has approximately 400 new aircraft scheduled to be delivered.

AirAsia recorded a sharp rise in passenger traffic in the first quarter of 2016.

The group’s short-haul airlines in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, India and the Philippines carried a combined total of 13.94 million passengers in the first three months of the year, up 17% compared with Q1 2015. This far exceeded the 6% expansion of the group’s seat capacity, allowing its average load factor to surge nine percentage points to 86%.

Much of this growth was driven by AirAsia’s largest unit, in Malaysia. Traffic on the Kuala Lumpur-based low-cost carrier jumped 17% to 6.48m passengers in Q1, while load factors increased 10 points to 85%. Thai AirAsia also performed well, with passenger numbers surging 18% to 4.37m and load factors up five points to a strong 88%.

Despite a 10% reduction in seat capacity, Indonesia AirAsia managed to achieve a 2% rise in passenger traffic, to 1.17m, and a nine-point jump in load factors to 80%. But the Jakarta-based airline’s position as AirAsia’s third largest unit is now under threat from Philippines AirAsia, which increased its passenger numbers by 15% to 967,600 and saw its average load factor jump 10 points to 87%.

Finally in India, AirAsia’s fledgling LCC carried 538,800 passengers and achieved an average load factor of 86%.

AirAsia is planning to launch its sixth short-haul subsidiary this year, with AirAsia Japan expected to commence flights from Nagoya in the coming months. At the end of March 2016, the group’s fleet totalled 170 Airbus A320 aircraft.

Indian airlines are planning to operate 14,869 weekly domestic departures during the 2016 summer season – an 18.6% increase from the 12,533 departures in summer 2015.

This marks the highest increase in weekly departures in recent times, according to aviation officials.

The Hindu reports that the increase in domestic flight operations is being led by newcomers Vistara and AirAsia India. Vistara plans to offer 334 weekly departures for the 2016 summer schedule, a 90% rise from summer 2015, while AirAsia India is planning a 67% increase in its operations, with 280 weekly departures.

However, Mysuru, Bhavnagar, Porbandar and Nanded airports will not benefit from the increase in domestic flights, with airlines halting their operations to these cities. With these cessations, the number of Indian airports handling commercial flights declines from 81 to 77.

A senior Indian aviation official told the newspaper that airlines are free to operate to or withdraw from any airport if the flights are not commercially viable, as long as they comply with the Route Dispersal Guidelines (RDG).

Air India and Air Costa are the only two domestic airlines which will see a decline in weekly departures for summer 2016.

Tata Sons, the Indian conglomerate that owns stakes in AirAsia India and Vistara, has reiterated its call for the 5/20 rule for airlines to be removed.

The regulation dictates that any new Indian airlines must operate domestic routes for five years and build a fleet of at least 20 aircraft before they are permitted to launch international flights.

But Tata, whose two Indian carriers launched in 2014 and 2015, called the rule “discriminatory”, as overseas airlines are allowed to operate flights to and from India without the same conditions.

“Tata Sons believes that the 5/20 rule must be abolished if Indian aviation is to achieve its full potential and improve India’s connectivity with the world,” the company in a statement this week.

“Apart from the fact that there are no global parallels to this rule, the rule is discriminatory to Indian airlines as foreign airlines that do not meet these criteria are allowed to operate in Indian skies, but Indian airlines cannot enjoy reciprocal rights.

“Indian carriers are best placed to promote India as a tourism destination and should be encouraged to provide international connectivity if they wish to do so.”

Tata noted that overseas airlines have now captured 70% of the international traffic to and from India, “taking Indian jobs and revenue with them”. And it asserted that the removal of the 5/20 rule would “boost international traffic to and from India to over 100 million passengers by 2021”, compared to 43m in 2014.

Tata faces opposition in its bid to get the 5/20 rule removed, however. Incumbent Indian carriers such as Jet Airways, SpiceJet and IndiGo have already abided by the rule and feel that its removal would give AirAsia India and Vistara an unfair advantage.

But Tata argues that claimed that airfares will rise as a result of removing the 5/20 rule are “unfounded”.

“Not protectionism, but increased competition within the country will further contribute to lower prices and greater accessibility of air travel to common people,” it said.

AirAsia's short-haul airlines boarded a total of 50.68 million passengers in 2015

AirAsia has carried 50 million passengers in a single year for the first time in its history.

The group’s portfolio of five short-haul carriers, based in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and India, boarded a total of 50.68 million passengers in 2015, up 11% from the 45.58m it carried in 2014. Its total seat capacity increased 9% and its average aircraft load factor rose two percentage points to 80%.

Almost half of the total passengers (24.25m) were carried on Malaysia AirAsia’s flights, which marked a 10% year-on-year increase. The Kuala Lumpur-based unit ended the year strongly, launching three new routes in the final quarter, to the Maldives, Changsha and Colombo. The unit’s full-year load factors increased two points to 81%.

In Bangkok, Thai AirAsia’s passenger traffic jumped 22% to 14.85m passengers, while average load factors edged up one percentage point to 81%. The latter stages of the year were marked by a significant expansion from Pattaya’s U-Tapao Airport, which included the launch of direct flights to mainland China, Singapore and Macau, along with domestic routes to Udon Thani, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai.

Indonesia AirAsia boarded a total of 6.10m passengers last year, which marked a sharp 17% drop compared to 2014. Load factors also declined four points to 74%. As part of its turnaround plan, the loss-making unit transferred three aircraft to the group’s other carriers – two aircraft to Malaysia and one to India.

Manila-based Philippines AirAsia saw a 19% jump in traffic, to 3.59m passengers, and an 11 point surge in load factors, to 81%. And the group’s youngest unit, AirAsia India, more than quadrupled its passenger numbers to 1.46m. Load factors averaged 81%.

While not all airlines have released their full-year passenger traffic figures, AirAsia’s group total of 50m passengers would make it approximately the fifth largest airline in Asia Pacific, after mainland China’s “big three” carriers and Japan’s ANA.

At the end of 2015, AirAsia operated a fleet of 170 Airbus A320 aircraft, with outstanding orders for a further 300. And the airline will continue to expand in 2016, with plans to relaunch its Japanese low-cost carrier based in Nagoya.

AirAsia India has posted a loss of INR611.5 million (US$9.1m) for the three months ending 30 September 2015, despite rising passenger traffic and revenues.

The low-cost carrier has significantly expanded its operations over the last 12 months, with a 225% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers (to 410,000) driving a 114% increase in revenues, which reached INR1.31 billion for the quarter.

The low-cost carrier increased its seat capacity by 221% year-on-year, while load factors averaged 76%. Ancillary revenues jumped 253% to INR470m.

AirAsia’s group CEO, Tony Fernandes said he would continue to expand the Indian airline’s operations in future.
“Our operations in India are geared to grow further after a year in service as we believe our low fares and excellent product appeals to travellers in India who remain underserved by air travel,” Fernandes said.

“AAI… will continue with its growth plan, adding in more aircraft to be based at its current two hubs in Bengaluru and Delhi. The associate will work towards keeping its cost under check, with increased focus on ancillary revenue,” he added.

AirAsia India now operates a fleet of six Airbus A320 aircraft to and from destinations including Delhi, Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam, Guwahati, Goa, Kochi, Pune and Jaipur.

AirAsia India opposes the 5/20 rule

The Indian government is planning to revise its controversial ‘5/20’ policy for international aviation, following complaints from start-up airlines.

The ruling requires airlines to operate domestic routes for five years and built a fleet of 20 aircraft before they are eligible to launch international flights.

New airlines including AirAsia India and Vistara have called for the ruling to be scrapped, but they face opposition from existing airlines, such as Jet Airways, IndiGo and SpiceJet, which have already complied with the policy.

To avoid taking sides in the dispute, India’s Civil Aviation Ministry has asked the government to create a replacement for the 5/20 rule. While the new policy is yet to be decided, it is likely to be a watered down version of the existing rule, in an effort to satisfy all parties.

The Economic Times quoted a ministry official, who requested to remain anonymous, as saying that two options are being discussed.

“One will be to reduce it to… two years and 10 aircraft, and the other would be to replace it by the domestic flying credits model,” the official said.

The domestic credits model would allow airlines to earn credits for the number and distance of domestic fights they operate. Once enough credits have been accumulated, the airline will be eligible to operate international flights.

AirAsia India has launched a new route connecting two cities in the country’s northeast.

The low-cost carrier has commenced services between Guwahati, the largest city in the state of Assam, and Imphal, the capital of Manipur state.

This marks the second venture into northeast India for AirAsia, following the recent launch of flights between Delhi and Guwahati.

Other Indian destinations served by the airline include Bengaluru, Goa, Pune, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Vishakhapatnam and Kochi.

All AirAsia India’s flights are operated using a fleet of 180-seat, all-economy class Airbus A320 aircraft.

Northeast India is seeing a significant increase in air lift this year, under the government’s plans to increase connectivity to remote areas. In April, Vistara commenced services linking Delhi with Guwahati and Bagdogra, in West Bengal, and last month Alliance Air started flying to West Bengal’s new Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport.

In total, AirAsia’s short-haul airlines carried 11.88 million passengers in Q1, 3% more than the same period last year, with an average aircraft load factor of 77%. But Thai AirAsia‘s traffic surged 19% to 3.70m passengers in the three-month period, with load factors rising three points to 83%.

The group’s main Malaysian unit saw a steady 3% increase in traffic to 5.54m passengers, although load factors dropped six points to 75%, and Indonesian AirAsia saw a slump in traffic (-26% to 1.56m) and load factors (-6 points to 70%). Malaysia’s AirAsia will transfer another one of its aircraft to the company’s Indian unit, following a new leasing deal.

The Bernama news agency reports that the Kuala Lumpur-based low-cost carrier has entered into an agreement to lease one of its 180-seat Airbus A320s to AirAsia India for US$1.9 million. This will be the third A320 AirAsia India has leased from its Malaysian sister carrier.

“The company currently leases aircraft to the other joint venture airlines within the AirAsia Group in its ordinary course of business, and in line with AirAsia’s growth strategies, the fleet expansion of AirAsia India would help to maximise the route opportunities in South Asia,” the company was quoted saying.

The AirAsia Group, which operates short-haul subsidiaries in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India and the Philippines, currently has a combined fleet of 184 A320s, with a further 345 on order. Of these, Malaysia AirAsia operates the largest number (82) while AirAsia India has the smallest fleet, with just four aircraft.

AirAsia India plans to operate a fleet of 10 Airbus A320s in its first year

AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes has once again criticised the Indian government’s rules for overseas flights.

The so-called “5/20 rule” means that India-based airlines have to have operated domestic routes for five years and have a fleet of at least 20 aircraft before they are permitted to launch international routes.

But Fernandes – a long-standing opponent of the current regulations – said last week that the rule would hinder the competitiveness of India’s aviation industry.

“It would mean less economic activity as aviation has been a key growth generator for other countries like Singapore and Dubai,” the AirAsia chief was quoted saying by the Economic Times.

“AirAsia will fight those who try to protect the status quo by lobbying for antiquated rules. Indian people must be put first before those who just lobby to protect their own bottom line as opposed to competing,” he added.

But Fernandes faces opposition from other the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), which counts Jet Airways, SpiceJet and IndiGo among its members. In January 2015, the FIA wrote a letter to India’s Aviation Ministry, urging it not to change the regulations.

On this issue, India’s aviation sector appears to be divided between incumbent airlines that have been forced to abide by the 5/2-0 rule, and start-ups like AirAsia India and Vistara who want it changed.

AirAsia continued to experience rising passenger traffic in 2014, driven by its operations in Thailand.

The group, comprising the short-haul low-cost carriers in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and India, carried a combined total of 45.68 million passengers last year, 7% more than in 2013.

But this growth was driven mostly by Thai AirAsia. The Bangkok-based LCC experienced a 16% jump in  traffic last year, to 12.21m passengers. The group’s largest unit, Malaysia AirAsia, experienced a 1% rise in traffic to 22.14m passengers, while Indonesia AirAsia’s traffic remained flat at 7.85m.

The smaller Manila-based unit, Philippines AirAsia, rose 36% to 3.03m passengers, while no comparative results were available for AirAsia India, carried 345,300 passengers since its commenced operations in June 2014.

AirAsia added 18 new Airbus A320 aircraft in 2014, boosting its capacity by more than 3,200 seats. Of this total, nine new aircraft were delivered to Malaysia AirAsia, five to Thai AirAsia and three to AirAsia India. The group now operates a fleet of 172 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.

A group of Indian airlines has expressed its opposition to planned changes to the rules governing when airlines can launch international flights.

The Economic Times reports that the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), which counts Jet Airways, SpiceJet and IndiGo among its members, said it does not support the proposed changes, which would allow new market entrants like Vistara and AirAsia India to launch international services more quickly.

IndiGo is a member of the FIA
IndiGo is a member of the FIA

At present, Indian airlines have to operate domestic routes for five years, and have a fleet size of at least 20 aircraft, before they can apply to launch international services.

In a letter to India’s Aviation Ministry, the FIA said the rule changes are unfair on the country’s well-established carriers.

“The proposed policy… dilutes the commitment already demonstrated by incumbent carriers towards national interest, in their having built up extensive domestic networks,” the letter said, as reported by the Economic Times.

The FIA added that the new policy “risks creating a disruptive impact on investments made towards fleet orders and commercial development”.

The FDI previously lobbied the Indian government not to allow the formation of Vistara and AirAsia India, on the grounds that they violated the rules governing foreign investment in Indian carriers. These rules were changed to enable overseas investment, but the FIA claims foreign investment should have only be permitted in existing airlines, not to create new start-ups.

AirAsia has abolished fuel surcharges across all of its routes, including long-haul services with AirAsia X.

The low-cost carrier said that, effective immediately, none of its subsidiaries will apply the tax to any domestic or international flight ticket.

“We are a high-value, low-fare airline and we will continue to strive to make flying as affordable as possible,” said AirAsia’s group CEO, Tony Fernandes.

“This decision has been made in November 2014, which was in line with declining global oil prices. However, we are only able to implement it now, but we believe removing fuel surcharge and reducing travel costs will be a huge boost to the tourism industry. This will be a plus point for consumers, but the economy will also benefit from this as the tourism industry is a great job creator.”

AirAsia said the abolition of fuel surcharges will “stimulate more demand for travel and tourism”. It became the first airline to abolish fuel surcharges for all its flights back in 2008, but rising fuel prices forced the fees’ re-introduce in 2011.

The move, which was implemented on 26 January 2015, will now apply to Malaysia’s AirAsia Bhd, Thai AirAsia, AirAsia Indonesia, AirAsia India, AirAsia X, Thai AirAsia X and Indonesia AirAsia Extra. AirAsia Philippines, along with all carriers in the Philippines, removed fuel surcharges earlier this year following a government directive.

Crude oil prices halved by the end of 2014 and have fallen a further 17% in January 2015.

Travelport has signed a new distribution agreement with AirAsia India.

The new Chennai-based low-cost carrier has agreed to sell its fares and ancillary services through Travelport’s ‘Travel Commerce Platform’, more commonly known as the GDS.

The move follows the landmark launch of AirAsia’s fares on the GDS systems earlier this year.

“We are pleased to become the latest carrier within the AirAsia Group to distribute our flights via Travelport, enabling us to expand our network as part of our growth strategy,” said AirAsia India’s CEO, Mittu Chandilya.

Damian Hickey, Travelport’s vice president of global distribution sales & services for Asia Pacific, added; “India is a key region for Travelport and we are delighted to have AirAsia India onboard. I am confident that they will increase their bookings and generate more brand awareness as their offering becomes available on more than 67,000 travel agency desktops worldwide.”

Travelport-connected agents are already able to book flights and ancillaries from AirAsia Malaysia, AirAsia X, Indonesia AirAsia, and Thai AirAsia via the GDS. The new agreement means that AirAsia India’s flights and extras will now also be offered alongside those of traditional carriers.

The new Chennai-based low-cost carrier will now provide Amadeus-connected travel agencies across the world with access to its schedules and fares. AirAsia India has also signed up for Amadeus’ light ticketing technology, allowing travel agents to view and compare its fares in the same screen as full-service carriers.

“In the fiercely competitive Indian aviation industry, Amadeus will help set us apart from the competition,” said Mittu Chandilya, CEO of AirAsia India. “With their unmatched global network of travel agencies and industry expertise, we are confident that Amadeus will be the ideal partner to support our ambitious growth targets.”

Hazem Hussein, Amadeus Asia Pacific’s executive vice president of airline commercial, added; “India is a booming market for low-cost carriers. We are seeing more travellers who want a low cost option via their travel agency when travelling in India. AirAsia is a long term Amadeus partner and we are thrilled to see the newest venture, AirAsia India joining the partnership.”

The AirAsia group signed its first ever GDS deal earlier this year, when it connected to Amadeus. This marked a major shift in strategy for the LCC, which had previously focused on direct bookings.

Low-cost carrier IndiGo has maintained its leading position in the Indian domestic air market, in terms of market share.

The airline carried 31.6% of the country’s total domestic traffic in June 2014, according to the latest data from the country’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This result marked a slight decline from May however, when IndiGo handled 31.7% of the Indian domestic market.

Full-service carrier Jet Airways was the second biggest Indian carrier last month, with a 19.6% share of the market, followed by SpiceJet.

National carrier Air India only commanded an 18.5% share of the domestic market in June, making it the country’s fourth biggest airline.

Newcomer AirAsia India took a fractional 0.2% share of the market in its first month of operations, but this is expected to grow rapidly in the coming months and years.

GoAir posted the highest average cabin load factors in June. The airline managed to fill 81.5% of its available seats during the month, slightly ahead of SpiceJet’s 81.4%. Air India had a domestic load factor of 78.6% but Jet Airways filled just 69.5% of its seats.

AirAsia expects its new Indian carrier to break-even earlier than its previous ventures.

Bernama reported the group’s CEO, Tony Fernandes, as saying that the company will draw on its experiences of launching new airlines in other countries to help AirAsia India’s operations.

“The more planes you have the quicker we will make money. We plan to have six planes by year-end,” Fernandes was quoted saying at the official launch of the new airline last week.

“It took us two years in Thailand and two-and-a-half years in Indonesia to break even, but in India we got a lot more experience,” he added.
AirAsia India launched on 12 July with flights from Bengaluru to Goa. It has since added a new route connecting Bengaluru with Chennai and plans to launch Bengaluru-Kochi flights on 20 July.

And Fernandes said that it would now seek rights to operate international services from India.

AirAsia now operates units in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and India, and last week confirmed plans to relaunch its Japanese low-cost carrier in 2015.

AirAsia India is a joint venture with Indian conglomerate Tata Sons.

India is planning to create a series of new low-cost airports across the country, in an effort to boost nationwide connectivity.

Aviation secretary Ashok Lavasa told an event organised by the Economic Times this week that the Indian government is preparing a “roadmap for no-frills airports”.

“The design of airports built in [the] past few years have been rather ambitious,” Lavasa told the event. “There is a lot of scope for cutting costs and conserving energy. The roadmap for no-frills airports is ready and that should help the objective of enhancing regional connectivity.”

The development of low-cost airports would support the expansion of India’s new breed of low-cost carrier, such as SpiceJet, IndiGo and, most recently, AirAsia India, which rely on low operating costs. Low-cost terminals tend to offer fewer services and lower usage fees for airlines.

And Lavasa told the Economic Times that rather than developing brand new airports, existing airstrips could be converted into commercial hubs.

“India has as many as 464 airstrips, out of which less than 25% are controlled by the AAI (Airport Authority of India). Of this number with AAI, not all are operational,” he said. “No frills and energy efficient airports will help us lower the cost of infrastructure. This way, we can optimally utilise our existing infrastructure (referring to hundreds of unutilized airstrips that can become functional airports by having a no frills terminal).

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked us to ensure maximum utilisation of available infrastructure,” the secretary added.

AirAsia has been forced to break from its usual business model in India by offering passengers free checked-in baggage, it has been reported.

India’s Business Standard revealed that following intervention by India’s Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the new low-cost carrier will have to offer every passenger up to 15kg of free checked baggage.

The directive will come as a blow to AirAsia India, which makes a large amount of its revenues from ancillary services such as paid baggage.

It was planning to charge INR199 (approx. US$3.40) for up to 15kg  of luggage, but the DGCA appears to have objected to the concept. Other domestic airlines, including LCCs like IndiGo and SpiceJet, do not charge for up to 15kg of luggage.

The regulator has now asked the AirAsia India to stop collecting the charges for the time being.

AirAsia India will launch on 9 June 2014, on the route between Bengaluru and Goa.

AirAsia’s entry into the Indian market got off to a good start this week, after seats on its maiden flight sold out in just 10 minutes.

The low-cost carrier will launch services on the Bengaluru-Goa route on 12 June 2014, and an opening promotion for the service has proved extremely popular among Indians. Fares on the route were being sold for just INR990 (US$17).

As well as selling out the first 180 seats in 10 minutes, the airline’s 25,000 promotional seats were also snapped up within 48 hours.

“We are very excited by the feedback we received from the market. Our motto has always been to make everyone fly and we have already begun to show that we are true to our promise,” said AirAsia India’s CEO, Mittu Chandilya.

“On behalf of AirAsia India I would like to thank every stakeholder who has worked towards making our launch a success,” he added.

AirAsia India will become the group’s fifth regional subsidiary, following existing units in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Based in Chennai, it will operate a network of domestic flights using a fleet of all-economy class Airbus A320 aircraft.

AirAsia India has started taking reservations for its first flight, which will launch on 12 June 2014.

The new low-cost carrier will initially start operating the Bengaluru-Goa route, which is now being offered with promotional fares of INR990 (US$17).

The announcement was made in Delhi on Friday by AirAsia India’s CEO, Mittu Chandilya.

“AirAsia will be opening up the bookings this evening,” he told reporters on Friday. “Our first route will be from Bangalore to Goa and Goa to Bangalore. We are very excited about that,” Chandilya was quoted saying by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

“Our collective goal is that every Indian should have an opportunity to fly,” he added, echoing the AirAsia slogan.

AirAsia India received its first ever aircraft, a brand new Airbus A320, on 21 March this year, and the new airline has had to clear a series of regulatory hurdles before being able to launch. It received its air operator’s licence on 7 May.

In terms of expansion, PTI reported Chandilya as saying that AirAsia India plans to build a fleet of 10 aircraft within its first year. Like AirAsia’s other regional operations, these will be single-aisle A320s with 180 seats in an all-economy class layout. These 10 aircraft will enable AirAsia India to connect to 10 cities, including Tiruchirappalli, Kochi and Kolkata.

A joint venture with Tata Sons, Chennai-based AirAsia India will become the company’s fifth regional unit, following Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Its Japanese venture closed in 2013 after just one year, but India is arguably the group’s most ambitious venture yet, given the challenges the market faces in terms of operations costs and taxation. But with such a huge pool of potential customers, there is no doubt India has the potential to be AirAsia’s biggest market.

Many are concerned however, that the arrival of AirAsia India will trigger a price war among India’s domestic carriers, particularly low-cost rivals like Spicejet and IndiGo.

The carrier has received its Air Operator’s Permit (AOP) or the flying license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) yesterday evening. The airline which has been waiting to get necessary approvals from the Indian authorities is likely to begin operations any time in the next one to three months.

“History has been made today in Aviation, Everything has been hard for AirAsia but we never give up. Today AirAsia India has got approval,” Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia announced on his twitter handle yesterday.

“We would realistically start operations in anywhere between one to three months given the fact that a new government will be in place soon,” Mittu Chandilya, Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia India was quoted by Economic Times.

Talking on the network, Chandilya added, “Out network isn’t finalised yet but we are looking at a 60:40 ratio of Tier II routes to metro routes with 60 being Tier II. The first flight could be out of Chennai but that may change, however AirAsia India will most likely fly to all metros but exclude Mumbai.”

“The consumer will win. Well done Indian government and DGCA for putting people first and not (heeding) vested interests. More power to the people,” Fernandes told the newspaper.

The validity of the permit is still subject to Delhi High Court decision. AirAsia India is a joint venture between Tata Sons, AirAsia Berhad and Telestra Tradeplace received the flying license nearly a year after the venture was announced.
