Iran Air has taken delivery of its first new long-haul aircraft from Airbus, as part of a huge order placed last year.

The new A330-200 marks the start of a major fleet renewal and expansion strategy for the Tehran-based national carrier, which expects to introduce 100 new Airbus jets into its fleet on the coming years. These include 46 single-aisle aircraft and 54 wide-body jets, including 38 A330s and 16 A350s.

The new A330 is configured with a two-cabin layout, seating 32 passengers in business class and 206 in economy.

Iran Air is planning to completely overhaul its fleet following the easing of EU and US sanctions against the Iranian government. At present, the airline operates a fleet of aging Airbus jets, including the A300 and A310, as well as Fokker 100s and McDonnell Douglas MD-82s.

The airline recently welcomed back an A330-200 aircraft featuring the new seats and cabin products that will be gradually be rolled out across its entire twin-aisle Airbus fleet. Oman Air will also start taking delivery of its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners next year.

“Despite significant financial challenges, Oman Air is investing further in its fleet and cabins. Not only will we be unveiling new B787-9 Dreamliners which will join the fleet in 2017, but we are also revamping our existing Airbus fleet,” said the airline’s executive vice president of product & brand development, Abdulaziz Al Raisi (pictured).

“The arrival in Muscat of our comprehensively refurbished Airbus A330-200 brings the aircraft into line with our latest cabin and seat designs. The emphasis is on comfort, space [and] privacy.

“Our previous A330 interiors attracted enormous international acclaim when they were first unveiled in 2009. Our new A330 interiors surpass those high standards and customers are sure to be delighted with the results,” he added.

Oman Air’s new A330-200s feature 30 business class seats in a 2-2-2 configuration, all of which recline to form fully-flat beds. The 196 new economy class seats have a pitch of 32-34 inches (81-86cm). All passengers are offered touch-screen in-flight entertainment, USB ports, plug sockets and in-flight Wi-Fi.

Oman Air currently operates a fleet of 10 A330s and four B787-8 Dreamliners. It will also take delivery of 10 B787-9s between 2017 and 2020.

Air France has revealed the next phase of its long-haul cabin improvement programme, with the revamp of its Airbus A330 fleet.

The airline’s entire fleet of A330-200 aircraft will be refitted with new interior products, in a project that will run from late 2017 to the end of 2018.

Once the EUR140 million (U159m) programme is complete, each A330-200 will be able to carry 226 passengers, with 30 new flat-bed seats in business class seats, 21 seats in premium economy and 175 in economy. This marks an increase of 18 seats from the currently capacity, with 10 business class seats being removed to make way for 28 more economy class seats.

The project follows on from the ongoing revamp of the airline’s fleet of Boeing 777s.

“Since the first flight equipped with the ‘Best’ cabins to New York in June 2014, they have been highly acclaimed by our customers. If Air France is back among the best global airlines, this is partly thanks to our very high quality products and services. Equipping our Airbus A330 fleet with these cabins is the next logical step in the move upmarket of Air France’s products and services,” said Frédéric Gagey, chairman & CEO of Air France.

The new “cocoon”-style business class seats recline to form two-metre long beds, while the premium economy seats offer more legroom and recline 130-degree from upright. In economy, the new seat offers more legroom, new headrests and wider tray tables. And all seats come equipped with touch-screen in-flight entertainment systems.

A special Turkish Airlines aircraft landed at Tokyo’s Narita Airport on 30 November, to commemorate two major events in the history of Japanese-Turkish relations.

The Airbus A330-200 aircraft features a retro design based on the Turkish Airlines DC-10 that rescued 215 Japanese passengers from Tehran during the Iran-Iraq War.

And among the passengers on Monday’s flight were the cabin crew who were onboard the aircraft 30 years ago. They were greeted in Tokyo by Junichi Numata and Teruji Takahoshi, two of the Japanese passengers onboard the 1985 rescue flight.

This event features in a new movie ‘Kainan 1890’, along with another major page in the two countries’ shared history, the sinking of the Ertugrul ship. The Turkish frigate was lost in a typhoon whilst on a goodwill voyage to Japan in 1890, but its crew were rescued by local villagers in Kushimoto.

“Turkey dispatched an emergency Turkish Airlines DC-10 to rescue 215 Japanese during the Iran-Iraq War in 1985. We are very proud that Turkish Airlines had such an important role to play,” said Turkish Airlines’ vice president of sales for Asia & the Far East, Ahmet Harun Basturk.

“The special ‘Kushimoto’ plane which used the same design as the original DC-10, was named after the Kushimoto village in Wakayama prefecture, where the Turkish crew of the Ertugrul frigate in 1890 were saved.

“We are thrilled to be a part of the extraordinary friendship between Japan and Turkey that has lasted more than a hundred years. We’re delighted to make this reunion happen between our brave staff and the Japanese people from the incident. Moving forward, we wish to continuously play an important role in maintaining such a wonderful friendship,” he added.

Following Sunday’s inaugural flight, the Kushimoto aircraft will fly between Osaka’s Kansai Airport and Istanbul.

Effective 25 November 2015, the airline will replace the single-aisle Boeing 737 aircraft that currently operates the route with a twin-aisle Airbus A330.

Providing a total of 254 seats – 18 in business class and 236 in economy – this new aircraft will offer 50% more capacity than the B737. It will also feature seatback in-flight entertainment screens and full F&B service.

“We are happy to deploy Jet Airways’ spacious and modern wide-body aircraft to provide additional capacity on the highly popular Delhi-Singapore–Delhi route,” said Gaurang Shetty, Jet’s senior vice president of commercial. “This sector has seen a steady growth in traffic, particularly among business travellers. China Eastern Airlines is planning to launch the first ever direct air link between Kunming and Europe.

On 18 December 2014, the carrier will commence direct services between the capital of southwest China’s Yunnan province and Paris.

Flights will operate three times a week, departing Kunming’s Changshui International Airport every Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 0005, arriving at Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport at 0550. The return flight will then leave the French capital at 1150, getting back into Kunming at 0600 the next day.

The new long-haul route will be operated using a new Airbus A330-200 aircraft, which China Eastern took delivery of in September 2014. The aircraft has a capacity of 234 passengers in a two-cabin layout, with 30 flat-bed seats in business class and 204 seats in economy.

China Eastern is now set to take delivery of another two A330-200s by end of this year, which it will use to expand its international network from Kunming, including the launch of flights to Vancouver.

Shanghai-based China Eastern is the biggest airline operating at Kunming. Known as the Spring City, Yunnan’s capital has a warmer climate than many of China’s other major cities, and serves as a gateway to UNESCO-listed attractions such as the ancient city of Lijiang and the Stone Forest.

European airline operator IAG has confirmed an order for eight new Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

The company, which operates British Airways and Iberia, previously had purchase options for the new wide-body jets, and has now confirmed the deal.

The new aircraft will be delivered to Spain’s flag carrier Iberia, which will become a new operator of the A330-200. The twin-aisle jets will be delivered from the end 2015, joining Iberia’s all-Airbus fleet that already includes eight A330-300s.

“We are just delighted that Iberia has reconfirmed its confidence in the A330, and are extremely pleased to welcome them as a new operator of the A330-200 benefiting from the enhanced performance that the new 242-tonne version brings, while continuing to deliver the family synergies of an all Airbus fleet,” said John Leahy, Airbus’ chief operating officer for customers.

Iberia currently operates 13 Airbus A319s, 12 A320s, 18 A321s, eight A330-300s, eight A340-300s and 17 A340-600. It also has outstanding orders for eight A350-900 aircraft, which will replace the airline’s A340s.

Air Seychelles will soon take delivery of its first Airbus A320 aircraft in December 2014. This new addition signifies enhancements to its international flight schedule at the same time.

The changes, effective 1 December include increased weekly frequencies between Seychelles and Abu Dhabi, more capacity on flights to Mauritius, and revised schedules for routes to and from Johannesburg, Mauritius, and Paris.

Air Seychelles’ chief executive officer Manoj Papa said: “The addition of a two-cabin Airbus A320 aircraft to our fleet, configured with 16 seats in business class and 120 in economy class, forms an essential component of our plan. The aircraft will crucially deliver more revenue which will be used to further develop Air Seychelles’ expanding services.”

“Subject to regulatory approvals and beyond confirmed schedule updates and frequency enhancements, additional route announcements are planned in the coming months, so that by the end of 2014 our aircraft will be seen at many more destinations,” added Papa.

From December, Mauritius services will move to a morning departure from Seychelles, operating on Monday, Friday and Saturday, with the Saturday service flown by the Airbus A330-200 aircraft, providing 29% more seat capacity. Johannesburg’s three weekly wide-body services will operate on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, offering a convenient new weekend option for guests.

Air Seychelles’ services between Abu Dhabi and Seychelles will increase from 14 to 18 flights per week, while partner Etihad Airways will continue to operate three return services per week on the same route, offering customers a choice of 24 weekly flights between Seychelles and Abu Dhabi.
