Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection systems, has been selected to supply innovative solutions for people screening and search functions in Tokyo’s Narita International Airport.

Narita has chosen to install 13 of Smiths Detection’s eqo portals following a national directive from the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) to upgrade checkpoint security to comply with the latest international standards.

Using unique, flat-panel millimetre-wave technology, eqo offers state-of-the-art people screening detection capability with a minimal footprint. It allows checkpoints to evolve from mechanical screening to electronically steered technology, offering better image quality and system reliability. As a result, this reliable and easily serviceable system helps to reduce the burden of security screening in airports.

“More than 20 million visitors  entered Japan last year and this number is expected to increase due to the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games in 2020” commented Nathan Manzi, vice president of Asia Pacific at Smiths Detection. “For this reason, Japan’s international airports are seeking to increase and strengthen the effectiveness of the security process while ensuring that passengers move quickly and seamlessly through them. Narita selected our eqo solution as it offers a small footprint and the highest passenger throughput comparable to alternative products in the market.”

By implementing the system, airports have a rapid means of detecting concealed objects using the system’s real-time automated detection interface. eqo’s multi-material detection abilities help to reveal any concealed objects, such as metals, liquids and narcotics, which can compromise aircraft  safety. Plus it can be easily integrated into existing checkpoints without requiring major alterations to standard layouts and operations.

Do you lose sleep about the health hazards associated with using airport security bins?

No, me neither. But if you do, then fret no more; an airport in the US claims to have launched the world’s first “self-cleaning” bins.

Ohio’s Akron-Canton Airport is using a new type of light film to cover its bins. These skins, which are applied like stickers to the handles and bases of the containers, feature mineral nano-crystals that create a self-cleaning reaction that’s said to be “stronger than bleach” and works continuously.

“Travellers’ health and happiness is a priority of ours,” said Rick McQueen, the airport’s president & CEO. “Our employees pride themselves on holding high standards for the cleanliness of the airport, and there is a lot of hard work that goes into meeting those standards.

“We’re proud to… implement this product because it’s one more way CAK continues to be a better way to go,” he added.

In rolling out the bins, Akron-Canton claims to have achieved “a first among the world’s 9,000 airports”.

The Chinese government has started taking the fingerprints of international visitors to the country.

The programme was launched this week by the country’s Ministry of Public Security, with fingerprinting technology being gradually introduced at all international points-of-entry.

The initiative was launched at Shenzhen’s Bao’an International Airport on Friday 10 February 2017.

A statement from the Ministry of Public Security said that all foreign passport-holders between the ages of 14 to 70 will be fingerprinted upon arrival in China. It did not reveal if any other biometric data would be collected.

Several countries already collect fingerprints from international visitors, including the US, Japan and Malaysia.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is rolling out a new international security system aimed at streamlining passenger checks at airports.

The new Smart Security initiative follows the US-led “pre-check” programme, which pre-screens passengers prior to their flight. Passenger details will be shared between governments and airports, enabling low-risk passengers to be processed more quickly, reducing queuing times at airport security areas.

IATA will launch the Smart Security initiative at Amsterdam and Melbourne airports, and is urging more governments to partner the programme.

“Our customers — the billions of people who fly with no ill intention — continue to tell us that security is the biggest pain point in their journey,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s director general & CEO. “We have come a long way since the dark days that followed the 9/11 tragedy. A deepened working partnership of industry and governments has ample scope for further improvements.”

IATA added that while known-traveller programmes are in use among border control agencies, there are few examples of their application to airport screening processes.

Many governments require airlines to provide Advance Passenger Information (API) and information contained in Passenger Name Records (PNR) in advance, but Tyler said this had not led to a significant improvement in the passenger experience or a shortening of queues. To improve this, he urged all governments to comply with global standards for API and PNR information collection.

“I don’t question the authority of states to require such information. But this uncoordinated approach is leading to what looks like an expensive, onerous and likely wasteful effort,” said Tyler.

“We all want the same outcomes: secure air transport and a convenient passenger experience. The only way to ensure that is in a working partnership of industry and government. There is no time to lose in moving ahead. The challenge grows with every new traveller. This year we expect to transport 3.5 billion passengers. In much less than two decades that number will more than double. Business as usual is not an option,” said Tyler.

The rise of automated technologies, biometric data collection and the pre-screening of passengers will lead to unobtrusive, “invisible” passenger screening at airports in the future, a new report has predicted.

According to the new ‘Global Airport Passenger Screening Market’ by Frost & Sullivan, new technologies and processes will “reduce the physical interaction with travellers” at airport security areas. These will include portal scanners, biometric collection devices, and pre-clearance based on background investigations, and will “transform the passenger screening process”, according to the report.

As a result, global spending on passenger screening technologies, which stood at US$1.42 billion in 2014, is expected to reach US$1.63 billion in 2020.

“To deal with the escalating passenger traffic, airports need to implement swifter and more efficient methods of passenger screening,” said Frost & Sullivan’s senior industry analyst for aerospace & defence, John Hernandez. “One solution could be to supply passengers with alternate venues and automated tools to pre-screen them before they arrive at the airport.”

The report states that identifying high-risk passengers prior to their arrival at the airport is a key element in improving security. But for a more thorough system, airports are looking for innovative technologies capable of screening large numbers of passengers quickly and accurately.

Additionally, scanners than can detect non-metallic improvised explosive devices will be “imperative”, the report states.

But Frost & Sullivan cautioned that passenger screening technology “is only as efficient as those operating it”, and that accelerating the passenger screening process has been “met with resistance from officials”.

“Airports already employ automated systems such as automated passport control kiosks and automated border control, eGates, for international travel,” observed Hernandez. “The next step is to transition automated passenger screening to airport checkpoints. Equipment maintenance and recurring training will be critical selling points to agencies responsible for procurement.”
