The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) is marking the first anniversary of its Abu Dhabi Specialists e-learning programme by introducing new modules and markets for the innovative training scheme.

The programme, which was launched just over a year ago as part of DCT Abu Dhabi’s response to the COVID-19 crisis, saw all forms of physical promotional offers, workshops and training courses shifted onto virtual platforms.

It was designed to educate travel industry professionals, including front-liners, product managers, tour operators, travel agencies and home-based agents, about ways to promote Abu Dhabi effectively. Launched in May 2020, the e-learning has been successfully rolled out across the markets in 17 different countries and in seven different languages. So far, 13,670 applicants have registered for the course and more than 7,000 have graduated as ‘Abu Dhabi Specialists’.

“We will be launching additional learning modules and expanding into new markets in Switzerland and Israel,” said Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, executive director of marketing and tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi.

The investment in training and upskilling confirms DCT Abu Dhabi’s commitment to support the travel trade in key source markets to provide quality advice and better service to customers considering Abu Dhabi as a travel destination.

The programme is part of DCT Abu Dhabi’s Travel Trade Marketing Plan to ensure the travel specialists are equipped with the right knowledge and tools to sell. Besides the training aspects, the specialists receive regular communications on the destination, invitations to events, and access to marketing toolkits. The enhanced programme will include three new modules to equip agents with knowledge about:

  • Expo 2020 Dubai: The Expo 2020 Dubai module provides a comprehensive overview, including the history of World Expos, Expo 2020’s incredible programming, including events, art, culture and world-class entertainment from more than 190 participating countries, as well as breath-taking architecture and sensational gastronomy.
  • Abu Dhabi as a Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing and Exhibitions (MICE) destination: This module highlights the unique venues that Abu Dhabi has to offer for MICE groups, such as Qasr Al Hosn, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi and Etihad Arena.
  • Abu Dhabi’s Culture assets and programmes: The module will aim to raise knowledge and understanding of Abu Dhabi’s cultural attractions and programmes by covering the history of the different culture assets, visitor experience and what to expect when visiting, as well as highlighting cultural events such as the Culture Summit Abu Dhabi, among others.

The programme is available in 17 markets (USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Russia & CIS, China, India, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and Qatar) and in seven different languages (Arabic, English, German, French, Italian, Russian and Mandarin).

The new modules will be progressively rolled out in different markets and languages, and the Abu Dhabi specialists will be accorded the ‘advanced’ certification upon completion.

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has extended exemptions of tourism and municipality fees for hotel establishments operating within the emirate until 30 June, said a report.

The exemption follows directives from Abu Dhabi Executive Council that are part of the economic stimulus package and are part of ongoing efforts to support the sector in overcoming challenges from Covid-19, news agency WAM reported. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, DCT Abu Dhabi introduced a series of initiatives and stimulus packages beginning in March 2020 to support hotel and tourism establishments in the capital.

“This initiative is in line with our vision of sustaining and supporting the tourism sector, especially in the exceptional and urgent circumstances that currently face the sector,” said Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, executive director of tourism and marketing sector at DCT Abu Dhabi.

“This decision supports partners and stakeholders in revitalising the tourism sector and ensuring that it recovers from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, providing hotel and tourism facilities with the opportunity to develop and improve their experiences and products. Close collaborations between the public and private sectors are vital, and we are committed to working hand-in-hand to pave the way towards a brighter future,” he added.

A total of 146 hotel and key tourism and retail establishments have successfully enrolled in the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi’s (DCT Abu Dhabi) Go Safe certification initiative which was launched in June to elevate and standardise hygiene and cleanliness levels across the emirate.

Louvre Abu Dhabi and W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island were among the first venues to obtain the certification and have been followed by the likes of Emirates Palace and the St Regis Abu Dhabi, along with key tourism sites Qasr Al Hosn and Cultural Foundation, in earning the new health and safety-focussed certification. With more establishments currently undergoing the assessment process, DCT Abu Dhabi aims to get the entire UAE capital Go Safe-certified by the end of August 2020.

The increase in the number of certified hotels and venues shows its increasing preparedness to welcome guests and visitors once more, with these establishments assessed against 313 checkpoints that measure the standard of safety measures implemented. These measures include the adoption of social distancing courses, checkpoints for temperature screenings and regular disinfection of all operational areas.

DCT Abu Dhabi, along with the government of Abu Dhabi, has also announced that regular COVID-19 testing for all tourism sector staff has been made mandatory.

Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, executive director of tourism and marketing at DCT Abu Dhabi said: “In a short amount of time, Go Safe has successfully become the benchmark for hygiene and safety levels in Abu Dhabi, blazing a trail in setting world-class standards in cleanliness and improved public health. Go Safe was created with our consumers’ concerns in mind, to help boost their trust and confidence and allow them to experience the best of Abu Dhabi all whilst feeling safe and reassured.”

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) revealed signs of progress within the tourism sector as the emirate prepares to gradually open up to international travel. Hotel occupancy rates in Abu Dhabi have risen by 3% year-on-year since 1 July and are expected to rise further with the launch of a number of initiatives within the emirate aimed at boosting the sector.

The UAE government has received global praise for its response in confronting the pandemic, as well as for how it has proactively managed its social and economic impact. The local government in the emirate in turn has relentlessly increased testing for COVID-19, and implemented strict measures, which has been reflected in cases dipping to less than 1% in Abu Dhabi City as a result of the government’s efforts.

DCT Abu Dhabi has also been working closely over the past period with industry partners and stakeholders to introduce a number of initiatives to aid hotels and cultural attractions in reopening.

The Go Safe certification programme is amongst the initiatives rolled out to boost consumer confidence and the tourism sector simultaneously. The programme aims to regulate hygiene standards across all hotels through implementing a strict set of guidelines across all tourism destinations including malls, restaurants, museums, public beaches, theme parks and other attractions. To date, more than 80% of hotels in the emirate have started the process to become ‘Go Safe’ certified, with W hotel and Louvre Abu Dhabi amongst first venues to obtain the certification.

UFC Fight Island, which is taking place on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island from 11-25 July, is another major step towards rebooting tourism in the capital of the UAE.

“The progress we have seen since the start of this month was achieved by simply leveraging our offerings and the existing high standard of hospitality, to help us speed up the enlivenment of our sector and elevate further from that point,” said Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, executive director of tourism and marketing at DCT Abu Dhabi.

Hotels in Abu Dhabi have started opening after adhering to guidelines set out earlier this month following an extensive period of sterilisation.

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has announced the launch of a safe and clean certification programme – a first of its kind in the region, and one which seeks to uplift and standardise the cleanliness and hygiene levels across all businesses and organisations in the tourism sector.

As hotels, malls and other attractions in Abu Dhabi prepare to cautiously re-welcome guests to their venues, DCT Abu Dhabi aims to safeguard the health and wellbeing of consumers by offering certifications that ensure the compliance of standardised hygiene levels in tourism destinations and industry businesses within the emirate.

“Through this tourism board led programme, we hope to boost the confidence of consumers when considering Abu Dhabi as a tourism destination. Our dedicated team has been working closely with different stakeholders to ensure that this programme considers all elements of health and safety and we encourage all hotels and industry partners to attain the certificate,” said Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, executive director of tourism and marketing at DCT Abu Dhabi.

The certification programme was developed in partnership with leading world developers and will be rolled out in phases. Phase one will be dedicated to hotels in Abu Dhabi, with other tourism attractions and businesses to follow.

The Department of Culture and Tourism from Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) welcomed the Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau to the UAE capital, where the bureau was hosting the ‘Abu Dhabi Overseas Promotion Conference of Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau’.

During their visit, members of the bureau were given the opportunity to tour DCT’s offices to learn more about the city’s tourism strategies and upcoming plans for 2020. The visit reflected the increasingly strong strategic partnership between the UAE and China, which aims to support the countries’ common goals based on shared ambition and values.

The visit aimed to promote practical cooperation in the field of cultural tourism between Abu Dhabi and Beijing, especially as China is a leading source of tourists in Abu Dhabi, and hence a valuable market.

“Both Beijing and Abu Dhabi boast a rich and unique history and culture – a key factor for attracting tourists,” said Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, acting executive director of tourism and marketing sector at DCT Abu Dhabi.

“We are strengthening our cooperation with DCT, which promotes the overseas partnership programme and continues to play the role of a bridge between our two cities in the culture and tourism areas,” said Wang Qing, director at Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau.
