Aurora Expeditions has released its new season for Arctic & Beyond 2025 voyages, including four brand new expeditions and seven Ultimate Adventure voyages that allow adventurous travellers to explore further and longer on the company’s new purpose-built small expedition ships, the Greg Mortimer and the Sylvia Earle.

Aurora Expeditions’ new Arctic & Beyond season features a comprehensive array of departures to the unique and varied destinations of the region including Greenland – whose east, south, west, and northwest coasts will be explored – Svalbard, Norway, Iceland and Canada’s High Arctic via the famed Northwest Passage. Also included are the company’s popular voyages to destinations such as Costa Rica and the British Isles.

Aurora is also making it simpler to reach the embarkation point for its bestselling Svalbard itineraries from 2025 by introducing included charter flights from Oslo to Longyearbyen.

“We are thrilled to launch our new season, where we will continue to bring our expeditioners to incredible destinations where nature reigns supreme, and where few others venture,” commented Hayley Peacock-Gower, CMO of Aurora Expeditions.

“This season promises to deliver life-changing and meaningful adventures, iconic wildlife, connection with local communities, and a focus on protecting the destinations we visit; all guided by our expert team who always follows the experience.”

“This season has been designed with adventure, immersion, and exploration in mind, while also catering for the interests of our global passengers,” commented Justin Ewin, Aurora Expeditions’ Global Head of Product.

“Along with including new charter flights to simplify our passengers’ journeys, we have introduced shorter voyages that appeal to the North American and Asian markets, as well as longer, ‘Ultimate Adventure’ voyages which are more frequently desired by Australian, New Zealand and European passengers. We are also excited to be exploring new frontiers, where we intend to venture further afield in northwest Greenland than we have before.”

New expeditions include:

  • Spitsbergen: Realm of the Ice Bear

Oslo/Oslo, 16 June-23 June 2025 on the Greg Mortimer – Focusing on the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago, we slice through pack ice to find walrus and bearded seals, and sail along spectacular fjords surrounded by jagged mountains that pierce the sky. We keep our eyes peeled for polar bears hunting on the ice while guillemots nest in high cliffs away from the hungry jaws of arctic fox. Stretch your legs on walks across the tundra, and discover historical camps of explorers and hunters.

  • Iceland’s Westfjords & North Coast

Reykjavik/Reykjavik, 28 July-05 August 2025 on the Sylvia Earle

Explore Westfjords, one of the remotest and most pristine regions in Iceland. Discover diverse landscapes with thundering waterfalls, lava fields that breathe steam, and verdant valleys that stretch beyond the horizon. In Húsavík, keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready to catch the fluke of a whale’s tail as it takes a deep dive. Atlantic puffins can be found in large numbers in Iceland, and we plan to encounter these delightful creatures as often as possible.

  • Southern Greenland: On the Trail of the Vikings

Reykjavik/Toronto, 04 August-17 August 2025 on the Sylvia Earle

Experience the enormity of Greenland, where jagged peaks pierce azure skies, and countless glaciers snake their way towards the coast. Zodiac-cruise along fjords where you might glimpse ringed seals lazing on sea ice calved from Greenland’s enormous ice sheets. Sail along Prince Christian Sound, flanked by imposing mountains. Verdant pastures in south Greenland signal the presence of human settlement and the Viking ruins of Erik the Red, which still stand at Hvalsey.

  • Wild Landscapes of West Greenland

Toronto/Toronto, 15 August-29 August 2025 on the Sylvia Earle

Home to the northernmost capital in the world, Nuuk, the west coast of Greenland may be where most Greenlanders live, but you are unlikely to encounter many people outside of the capital. With no road to connect the townships, flying or sea travel are the only options available. We push through the sea ice to venture north, where locals see few tourists, to explore hidden bays glittering with icebergs calved from the enormous Greenland ice sheet, and where whales may shelter.

Travellers who are interested in exploring different regions, destinations or activities in a single journey can also embark on one of seven ‘Ultimate Adventures’, which are consecutive voyages that maximise exploration time, offering a broader range of experiences as well as added value savings. for passengers. Examples include the 20 day ‘Wild Svalbard, Greenland & Iceland’, the 23 day ‘Arctic Wonders: Iceland & Spitsbergen’, the 26 day ‘Greenland in Depth’ or the 26 day ‘Northern Isles: Scotland & Iceland’.

Ahead of commencing its Antarctica 2023-24 season later this month, Australian-owned expedition company Aurora Expeditions has announced new developments to the dining options aboard its vessels in line with the operator’s Sustainability in Action Program.

Passengers travelling on the Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle this Antarctic season will enjoy new options from Aurora’s Sustainable Food Program including locally-sourced organic fruit, vegetables and dairy products, free-range chicken and eggs, Argentinian grass-fed beef and a selection of other local products.

Furthermore, all seafood will be certified by internationally recognised certifying bodies, whilst fish eggs and tuna will be eliminated from onboard menus across both ships, due to concerns related to overfishing and the need to protect the ocean’s ecological balance. This initiative is in addition to the Sustainable Sea Day already practiced on the Sylvia Earle, where seafood is not available on Day 6 of each voyage in honour of the ship’s namesake and her advocacy for the protection and regeneration of our oceans.

“As our Antarctic voyages predominantly depart from Argentina, it was important for us to work with local producers and farmers to ensure we are providing fresh, high-quality ingredients for our passengers whilst also minimising our food miles,” commented Aurora Expeditions’ CEO Michael Heath.

“The rollout of these sustainable food initiatives has come out of a comprehensive review of our supply chains, and it is an important part of our continuing progress to becoming the leader in sustainable expedition travel.”

Founded 32 years ago on the guiding principles of discovery and exploration, Aurora takes passengers on expeditions to some of the world’s most fragile and untouched wilderness destinations. Recognising its responsibility to protect these important ecosystems, earlier this year the company published its inaugural Impact Report, which provides a comprehensive review of the company’s efforts to embed sustainable practices across all areas of the business to date, as well as its future goals.

Help your clients venture into the extraordinary and experience the thrill of Arctic exploration in 2024 with Aurora. Featuring multi-destination voyages and experiences in some of the most mesmerizing, remote and remarkable places on the planet. An Arctic expedition on one of Aurora’s two new purpose-built small expedition ships is designed to unleash passengers’ curiosity and deepen their connection with nature.

Awe-inspiring destinations

Offering both ‘expedition’ and ‘discovery’ themed voyages to spectacular Arctic destinations such as Svalbard, Greenland and the Northwest Passage, weather and the potential for wildlife encounters are the primary elements that guide Aurora’s highly skilled onboard expedition team. Passengers on an Aurora voyage are reminded that the itinerary is only a guide, and the ultimate journey is the adventure.

Passengers on Greenland expeditions reveal the beauty of the world’s largest island.  Witness a remote land of ice and snow, offering majestic mountains that pierce the sky, and cruise through fjords with towering rock walls. It is a challenge to fathom the sheer magnificence of the scenery, while also absorbing the rich history of the region. Moreover, your clients will have the opportunity to experience iconic wildlife encounters and connect with remote Inuit communities and immerse yourself in their culture.

Explorations of Svalbard provide intrepid adventurers with an extraordinary chance to venture close to the North Pole, amongst towering bird cliffs, massive glaciers, majestic fjords and one of the world’s largest ice caps.  The territory is also a polar bear habitat, so expeditioners keep a watchful eye out for the elusive polar bear on pack ice whilst being enchanted by other captivating wildlife such as walrus, seals, whales, reindeer, Arctic foxes, guillemots, and puffins.

An expedition through the Northwest Passage presents dramatic cliffs adorned with seabirds, the haunting calls of whales, and the rugged, ice-fractured landscapes that host resilient Inuit communities. This passage serves as a captivating reason to traverse its icy terrain, a journey charged with the palpable echoes of the daring expeditions from the past that carved their path across Arctic Canada.

Several of Aurora’s Arctic itineraries also visit the enchanting landscapes of Iceland. As one of the planet’s most geologically active regions, it showcases erupting volcanoes, icebergs adrift in picturesque fjords, and stunning gorges that cascade with waterfalls. The island’s diverse landscapes are a canvas for rich wildlife, including Arctic foxes, puffins, whales, and seabirds. Beyond its natural wonders, Iceland’s captivating culture and enthralling human history add to its allure.

In essence, Aurora Expeditions’ Arctic 2024 Program offers an unprecedented chance to immerse yourself in the Arctic’s wonders.

New Ships redefining exploration

Aurora Expeditions takes expedition cruising to the next level with their new purpose-built small expedition ships, the Greg Mortimer and the Sylvia Earle. Comprehensive activities for adventurers

The heart of the adventure with Aurora lies in the off-ship experience, with the industry’s most comprehensive activity program on offer including Zodiac cruising, hiking and photography. If your clients are seeking an extra dose of thrill, optional activities like sea kayaking, scuba diving, and rock climbing are available*, all led by Aurora’s highly experienced activity guides.

While adventure is at the core of Aurora Expeditions’ philosophy, they understand the importance of feeling at home. Small group settings and warm camaraderie create a relaxed and informal atmosphere onboard. Balancing thrill with comfort, passengers share tales of adventures at the bar, dine in friendly groups, or even head to the bridge in their pyjamas for a polar bear sighting.

Following a successful Virtuoso Travel Week in Las Vegas, award-winning expedition travel company AE Expeditions is donating funds to three conservation-focused organisations on behalf of Virtuoso Travel Advisors.

Advisors who visited Aurora’s sales and marketing teams at the Virtuoso Globetrotting and Cruise Café events were given the opportunity to donate USD $5 each, to be directed to one of three organisations that AE Expeditions partners with via its Women in Conservation programme:

  • Deep Hope in partnership with Dr. Sylvia Earle
  • Ocean Generation in partnership with Jo Ruxton
  • Native Movement in partnership with Bernadette Demientieff

The response to this initiative was so heartfelt that Aurora has decided to double its donation to USD $2,500 across the three charities. “In lieu of giving out branded gifts and collateral during Virtuoso Travel Week, we wanted to focus on highlighting these organisations, the conservation and social justice work they do, and the inspiring women that lead them,” commented Aurora Expeditions’ CMO Hayley Peacock-Gower. “Aurora is passionate about taking real actions to care for the planet, and our Women in Conservation programme is just one of many initiatives that we havedeveloped within our ever-evolving Sustainability in Action programme.”

Aurora recently released its inaugural impact report, the first comprehensive reviewof the Australian-owned company’s purpose, vision and values, and an outline of its commitment to sustainability and progress to date.

Australia’s leading expedition travel company, Aurora Expeditions, has released its inaugural Impact Report 2022-2023. Titled ‘Protecting the world’s wild places’, it marks the first report of its kind for the expedition operator.

Founded 32 years ago on the guiding principles of discovery and exploration, Aurora takes passengers on expeditions to some of the world’s most fragile and untouched wilderness destinations. Recognising its responsibility to protect these important ecosystems, this first Impact Report provides a comprehensive review of the company’s efforts to embed sustainable practices across all areas of the business to date, as well as its future goals.

“We are incredibly proud to release our first Impact Report, which outlines our commitment to sustainability and our vision to be the global leader in sustainable expedition travel,” commented Michael Heath, CEO.

“This is about transparency and accountability for us as a business, and acknowledging where we are on our sustainability journey. We are acutely aware of the planet’s rapidly evolving climate crisis and the urgency with which we must all work together to help protect and regenerate our shared planet.

Expedition travel holds a unique opportunity to educate inspire people, which we believe is pivotal to safeguarding the wild and awe-inspiring places we visit.”

Aurora’s Impact Report reviews the company’s program of initiatives through the focus areas of ‘Planet’ and ‘People’, including:

  • Supporting seven of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • 100% Climate Neutral status
  • Emission reduction strategies, renewable energy and biodiversity conservation projects
  • Reduction of plastics, water conservation and waste management practices
  • A focus on education for passengers via onboard expert team and Citizen Science projects, honouring female conservationists onboard, and supporting access to climate change education for young people globally
  • Collaboration with individuals and organisations who share the company’s vision, including Dr. Sylvia Earle and Ocean Geographic on leading projects such as the Antarctic Climate Expedition February 2023

B Corp Certification is a natural progression as part of Aurora’s overall plans and the company is currently in the Evaluation stage of Certification, with expectations for this to be completed by 2024.

Aurora’s portfolio of sustainability programs, actions and measures have the overarching goal of reducing negative impacts on the environment and communities, contributing to building a more sustainable world for future generations. This inaugural Impact Report acknowledges that the company’s emissions reduction is ongoing, committing to be part of the movement of innovative thought leaders and advocating for the development of new technology that makes the expedition cruise industry more sustainable.

Also new is In Shackleton’s Footsteps, a 20-day epic adventure that retraces the historic voyage of the Endurance, venturing into the Weddell Sea to Elephant Island, the desolate outpost where Shackleton and his men finally made landfall after 497 days at sea. The voyage continues across the Scotia Sea to South Georgia, where Shackleton’s voyage reached its climactic conclusion. It departs from Ushuaia, Argentina on March 16, 2025.

A first for Aurora Expeditions is visiting the Chilean Fjords, a stunning maze of waterways filled with bird and sea life surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains. The Fjords are featured in two itineraries: a 14-day fly/sail Antarctic Explorer voyage departing March 01 and a 13-day Spirit of Antarctic expedition departing March 13, 2025.

Whether a novice or skilled, photography enthusiasts will love our immersive 13-day Spirit of Antarctica dedicated photographic voyage departing November 12, 2024. Travellers will learn the secrets, tips and tricks through informative lectures and while off-ship exploring from our professional photographers on board.

“I am beyond thrilled to release our most comprehensive Antarctica program for 24/25. The season is packed full of adventure and exploration with a variety of ways for travellers to truly explore Antarctica,” said Hayley Peacock-Gower, Chief Marketing Officer of Aurora Expeditions.

“We have pioneered purpose-driven exploration for more than 32 years and this season combines a unique mix of itineraries – returning favourites, new itineraries and a collection of special themed expeditions. We aim to open travellers up to exploration and push the boundaries of adventure while deepening connections to the natural world through our off-ship multiple daily excursions, our extensive range of activities and participative Citizen Science projects, all under the guidance of our highly acclaimed and experienced Expedition Team,” continued Peacock-Gower.

Aurora Expeditions is helping simplify when and where to explore in 2023 with its informative Bucket List e-book, compiled with its Expedition Teams’ expertise. Highlighting the ideal time to discover wild and pristine destinations or exceptional phenomena each month, the free Bucket List book includes travel hacks, immersive experience tips and wondrous wildlife encounters. It is an inspirational guide derived from Aurora’s world-class and passionate experts for adventure seekers looking to become ambassadors for the planet.

Readers looking to book the trip of their lifetime will receive savings of up to 20 per cent when booking by February 28, 2023.

The Bucket List book provides interesting facts, such as March being the optimal time to see whales in Antarctica. Aurora is one of the few ships still in the area during this time, enabling travellers to experience the real Antarctica. Meanwhile, April is ideal for a journey through the fabled Panama Canal and is best experienced during a rare daylight crossing to marvel at this man-made waterway.

Many of Aurora Expeditions’ Expedition Team have been guides with the company for over 10 years – several for over 20 years. All Aurora’s guides have decades of expertise in history, geology, wildlife, oceanography and glaciology, to list a few – each gathering research, expanding their knowledge and collecting a few anecdotes en route.

“Aurora’s guide experience is imperative for ensuring passengers have a safe, fascinating, enriching and enjoyable adventure,” said Hayley Peacock Gower, Aurora Expeditions’ Chief Marketing Officer. “Our guides’ invaluable tips, expertise and insights have culminated in this informative and practical guide to expedition travel.”

“Aurora Expeditions’ focus continues to be on education and conservation, our goal is to immerse our expeditioners in some of the world’s most hidden and spell-binding places in a relaxed and fun onboard setting,” continues Peacock Gower. “Our highly experienced Expedition Team will be leading and enriching our passengers while they experience myriad excursions by water and land, with enthralling activities ranging from Zodiac cruises to walks and hikes, sea kayaking, scuba diving, snorkelling, photography, wildlife watching, camping and snowshoeing. All under the guidance of our Expedition Team, while creating lifelong ambassadors for the planet.”

Excerpts from this informative guide include:

“People usually go to Svalbard hoping to see polar bears and walruses, but it can be the boisterous cliffs filled with jostling seabirds that takes their breath away.” – Dr Roger Kirkwood, Expedition Leader and Naturalist.

“You will inevitably have an encounter with curious seals, penguins or be lucky enough to swim with a whale. If this is not enough to entice you to the great white continent, the magical textures and shapes of underwater icebergs will definitely leave you speechless!” – Edwin Sargeant, Diving Guide.

There are no words to describe the feeling of reaching the top of a snowy slope and looking down into a bay filled with icebergs and penguin rookeries! To reach somewhere that would have been unattainable is a great feeling!” – Tarn Pilkington, Climbing Guide.

“March is ‘late-season’ for voyages to Antarctica: night times grow out of the endless summer days; the air freshens; dustings of snow can cover the land, and the sea surface can freeze with a thin crust of ice. Most other ships have left the scene, so all landing sites are available. It’s fantastic – you have the real Antarctica, and you have it all to yourself.” – Dr Roger Kirkwood, Expedition Leader & Naturalist.

Eamon Larkin

Aurora Expeditions takes travellers to Costa Rica and Panama which are a nature lover’s paradise. Travel Daily Media has spoken with Eamon Larkin, Expedition Guide for Aurora Expeditions, about the voyage to Costa Rica and Panama.

Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse regions on earth with its tropical rainforests teeming with an outstanding variety of wildlife, brilliant birds and flamboyant flora. In Panama, discover pristine coral reefs, meet the indigenous people of the Embera Mogue community, and learn the remarkable history of the Panama Canal on a guaranteed daylight crossing from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea.

Travel Daily (TD): To someone who has never been to Costa Rica and Panama, how would you introduce these countries in Central America?

Eamon Larkin (EL): These two great countries in Central America seemed to me like a sort of ‘Garden of Eden’ of wildlife and nature.  I was so impressed by the abundance of animals in such a compact area.

The ship is well suited for watching the spectacular sunsets from the observation decks and toasting another day.

Slowly cruising through the old Panama Canal was such a momentous event, to know you are passing from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean via this immense feat of construction was very cool.  And Aurora Expeditions always traverses the Panama Canal during the day so passengers can see this engineering marvel in person.

TD: Why is a voyage with Aurora Expeditions the best way to explore Costa Rica and Panama? What are the highlights of the expedition?

EL: By travelling on the small ships with Aurora, we visited remote parts of the coastline and islands that would be very difficult and time consuming to access from the land. One of the best things about a voyage with Aurora – is the outdoor nature of the ships and how much time you spend off ship adventuring. Landing in Zodiacs on a small, isolated island (off Coiba) and snorkelling off the beach above the corals was a definite highlight. We saw a green sea turtle – a rare sight!

TD: As an expert adventurer, what are some of the activities that passengers should not miss out on?

EL: As predominantly a kayak guide of course I would recommend going for an easy paddle in our stable inflatable kayaks. So peaceful. However, I think trying out a SUP (stand-up paddleboard) is a fun way to get wet, cool off and explore too.

Taking a walking tour through the thick forests in these countries is an adventure in itself. You never know what animals you’ll encounter. Everyone in the group is looking up and around trying to spot the next thing. Maybe howler monkeys, a crocodile or even a toucan. I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of a whale shark as we cruised off the coast of Panama.

TD: Aurora Expeditions include educational lectures on all voyages. What is the focus of the lecture on Costa Rica and The Panama Canal voyage?

EL: As a guide, I was often found in the lecture hall at the end of the day or on sea-days. I was fascinated by the different animals we had seen there and wanted to know more about it all. Then I was also surprised by how super interesting and complex the history of the area is: the famous Panama Canal of course, but also the indigenous tribes that still live in this paradise, so close to the city. Our lecturers are some of the best and presented by the most dedicated, experienced, passionate and skilled Expedition Team in the industry.

TD: How do you ensure and promote that the environment is protected in this expedition?

EL: This expedition is so much about how fantastic and unique this environment is, we (as E-team members) love sharing, experiencing, and protecting this special place with our passengers. Through education, minimal impact and vigilance, we hope to leave each area we stop at a little better than when we found it. We offer passengers our popular Citizen Science program which involves environmental impact research.

Aurora Expeditions has released its latest Arctic & Beyond 2024 program featuring multi-destination voyages and experiences in some of the most remote and remarkable places on the planet.

The newly expanded schedule showcases a variety of unique expedition and discovery voyages, along with trekking adventures and special guests who will deliver the natural wonders of the polar regions and beyond, from Greenland to Patagonia.

Aurora Expeditions offers travellers up to 25% savings when booking an Arctic or global destination prior to December 31, 2022. They can save up to 10 per cent when booking back-to-back voyages.

“Our expert Expedition Teams have been sharing their knowledge and understanding of the Arctic and Antarctic for more than 30 years,” said Aurora Expeditions Chief Marketing Officer, Hayley Peacock-Gower. “Our new Arctic and Beyond 2024 program continue to deliver the best of the polar regions as well as multiple destinations in warmer waters.”

New, enhanced and reintroduced itineraries include a 15-day Patagonia and Chilean Fjords expedition; 11-day circumnavigation of Iceland; 15-day sailing in Costa Rica and the Panama Canal; 12-day Wild Scotland adventure, and a 17-day Greenland Odyssey.

Polar expeditions in 2024 will travel across the Arctic Circle to Svalbard, Spitsbergen and the Northern Lights, and voyages into the fabled Northwest Passage, along with Aurora’s immersive expeditions in Antarctica.

Aurora’s two state-of-the-art, purpose-built expedition small ships – the Greg Mortimer, launched in 2019 and the brand-new sister ship, the Sylvia Earle debuting in December 2022 – are designed for education and enrichment to create lifelong ambassadors for the planet.

“The 2024 Arctic & Global program is designed with the intention of building on our existing strengths and leveraging our expertise in the polar regions by sending two ships up to the Arctic,” Aurora Expeditions Global Head of Product Justin Ewin. “Having just completed a successful Arctic and Global season, we have taken the opportunity to make exciting enhancements to some of our 2024 itineraries.”

A unique Founder’s Voyage, led by acclaimed explorer Greg Mortimer, and a Special Guests program covering photography, history, archaeology, conservation, art and Inuit communities, will add to Aurora’s education and enrichment offerings.

“Our greatest desire is for our passengers to disembark richer for the experience and as an ambassador for the good of our fragile planet,” added Peacock-Gower.

Award-winning adventure travel company Aurora Expeditions is offering an exciting and unique opportunity to discover the natural wonders of the Arctic with one of the world’s greatest explorers on board the state-of-the-art polar ship named after him.

The renowned Greg Mortimer (OAM) will be Expedition Leader of a life-enriching Across the Arctic Circle voyage aboard the Greg Mortimer, a 15-day adventure of a lifetime sailing from Scotland to Norway.

“I can’t wait to bathe in that exquisite Arctic light once again. It’s been a while. This time it will be even more surreal, being on a ship with my own name on it. I look forward to seeing you there,” said Greg Mortimer, OAM.

Edwin Sargeant

Jump on board and experience the unparalleled adventure in the Antarctic. Discover the rich human history and unique wildlife at the edge of the world.

Aurora Expeditions will take you to the magical subantarctic islands and have one-of-a-kind experiences like hiking the ice-covered landscapes, witnessing the lively penguin colonies, and watching the whales.

TD had a chat with snorkelling and diving guide Edwin Sargeant about Aurora Expeditions’ journey back to Antarctica.

Travel Daily (TD): Can you give us an overview of your Antarctic Expeditions? What is the highlight of each journey?

Edwin Sargeant (ES): This is a difficult question to answer as every expedition is different, even each day can differ vastly from the previous day. We factor in a great deal of flexibility with our expeditions to allow for unexpected animal or bird sightings, to be able to follow whales as they appear and even be mesmerized by icebergs. The other consideration each day is the weather.

I am constantly astounded each time I delve below the water line in the epic frozen realm of Antarctica. The colours of the coral, the water and the ice almost defy description. The excitement of swimming near penguins and seals or snorkelling among whales. These are my highlights.

Operating intimate ships mean we can explore wild and hidden locations that very few visit and we have expeditioners on shore multiple times a day – weather permitting, of course. Our expeditioners love the immersive experiences that Aurora Expeditions provides. The feeling of giving back to society such as our popular Citizen Science program is popular along with many activities and multiple Zodiac and shore excursions. This is what we find is critical to our passengers’ enjoyment of their holiday.

TD: What are the unique activities that travellers can choose and enjoy?

ES: Aurora’s main aim is to offer life-changing experiences and have its passengers become ambassadors for the protection of our fragile blue planet and share their knowledge and experience on their return home.

An expedition cruise is very different to a general cruise. It’s about getting out to the destination several times a day and spending time immersing yourself in the spectacular surroundings, involving yourself in the plethora of additional activities like kayaking*, polar diving* and snorkelling*.  We even have snowshoeing* and ice camping*.

Aurora Expeditions was the first operation to offer scuba diving in Antarctica to its passengers in 1998.  Naturally, this is my passion, along with snorkelling, and I love showing divers the colourful, dynamic wonderland below the icebergs. It is an amazing adventure available to experience divers. However, Snorkelling is open to everyone. You just need to know how to swim.

“Education and enrichment are at the heart of the way we explore”

Education and enrichment are at the heart of the way we explore, and in addition to our highly qualified Expedition Teams lecture series, we offer our Citizen Science and Special Guests programs.

Citizen Science is the collection and analysis of data provided by our expeditioners in collaboration with polar scientists. Our Special Guests program is on dedicated sailings featuring additional experts in their chosen field – photography, exploration, health, wildlife, etc. – who share lectures, fireside chats, and phenomenal insights, elevating your expedition experience.

TD: How is sustainability ensured in each journey?

ES: Our Green Program was developed with the aim to reduce the environmental impact of our expeditions. Implemented in 2020, a range of actions were taken to reduce single-use plastics, practice better waste management, adopt more environmentally friendly products in bathrooms and laundry, and build a more sustainable supply chain.

Aurora Expeditions offers the chance to enrich each passenger’s curiosity and expand their knowledge and understanding of the places visited.  For example, one of our Citizen Science programs is a microplastics survey. The collected and invaluable data make a major difference to the scientific community and the marine environment.

We also promote the Take 3 for the Sea organization’s ethos. Take 3 for the Sea has a simple, but effective, mission that we encourage all our staff, crew and passengers to adopt: “take 3 pieces of rubbish with you anytime you leave the beach, waterway or… anywhere, and you have made a difference.”

In a world first, our new purpose-built ship, Sylvia Earle, has each of the public decks named after pioneering female conservationists – Dr. Carden Wallace AM, Joanna Ruxton, Sharon Kwok and Bernadette Demientieff – along with a deck dedicated to Dr Earle herself.  The deck theming will educate our expeditioners on the impressive and important conservation work each is undertaking.

Another reason to recommend Aurora Expeditions climate ethos is our commitment to the preservation of the environment. Aurora Expeditions was one of the founders of the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO), which created the environmental protocols for all commercial visitors to Antarctica and is also a member of the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO). In doing so, Aurora Expeditions encourages its passengers to respectfully visit the planet’s wilderness areas and return as ambassadors charged with protecting these important regions.

TD: Why should travellers choose Aurora Expeditions to see the Antarctic region?

ES: When you travel with Aurora Expeditions, your clients are not only receiving 30+ years of experience lead, ship-based adventures to remote destinations. You’re also choosing a small-ship, low-impact expedition cruise that affords a deeper connection to everything you can experience in the polar regions and other out-of-the-way destinations.

Aurora Expeditions offers the largest number of world-leading expedition leaders and the best crew in the business. You’ll also unlock key insights and nuances about each destination we visit.

Our mission is to have our expeditioners disembark from an Aurora Expeditions voyage knowing far more than when they embarked, returning home as true ambassadors of the regions we have taken them to and influencing and enriching the knowledge of their friends and family too. These expeditions are life-changing, but they are educational platforms too.

*The optional activities are at additional costs.

Aurora Expeditions is offering one final opportunity to join the world-first Antarctic Climate Expedition sailing in February 2023, led by renowned oceanographer, marine biologist, explorer and conservationist Dr. Sylvia Earle.

Registrations for the ‘by-invitation’ Climate Summit are required by October 28, 2022. Aurora Expedition welcomes expressions of interest from visionaries of all walks of life, from teenagers to titans of industry, with interests in the fields of science, art, education and economics to contribute to this momentous expedition.

In partnership with Dr Earle and Ocean Geographic, the expedition’s mission is to address the warming climate and loss of ice in the southern polar region. It will develop creative strategies to radically reduce carbon emissions. Each expedition member will help formulate 23 resolutions to inspire transformative changes for global net-zero emission by 2035.

Limited to 110 expedition passengers from around the world, will join conservationists, high-profile personalities and ocean luminaries to raise public and government awareness of the splendour and importance of the Antarctic.

“This will be a climate expedition like no other. One that can have a real impact on the future of our relationship with life on Earth,” says Dr. Earle.

The pivotal 12-day Antarctic Climate Expedition starts on February 13, 2023, with two nights and a full-day collaborative conference in Ushuaia, Argentina followed by a nine day voyage on board Aurora Expeditions’ latest ship, the Sylvia Earle, and ends with a post-voyage night in Punta Arenas, Chile.

“The outcomes and photographic and video footage from this game-changing expedition aim to encourage the way people see and understand the Antarctic,” says Aurora Expeditions CMO Hayley Peacock-Gower. “To encourage people to be a part of the solution, to help change the trajectory of our blue planet.”

“We invite you to be part of this far-reaching legacy that helps bring about a sustainable planet,” he adds. “This is a unique opportunity to discover the beauty and majesty of Antarctica, in the company of Dr. Earle and her special guests.”

“February 2023 will be a moment in time of a gathering of great minds, a brains trust, for commitments to resolve what it takes to move from where we are now to a better future,” says Dr. Earle.

“This can be your legacy; you can help change the current course from a catastrophic outcome to a healthy, habitable planet” she adds. “Please do this for the next generation, for the future of humanity.”

The Sylvia Earle is the ideal ‘base camp’ for adventures at the outer limits of human exploration. The ship has everything you need to maximise comfort and relaxation while making enriching discoveries. The ship also features a modern lecture lounge, a Citizen Science Centre, multiple observation areas, Zodiac launching platforms, mud room, gym, spa and wellness centre. Every stateroom features an ocean view and nearly all include balconies.

Named in honour of Dr. Earle, the new purpose-built ship is designed for discovery to the most remote and beautiful places on earth. Its revolutionary ULSTEIN X-BOW® also allows the ship to cross oceans more comfortably and efficiently.

Other outcomes will include a series of lectures, expedition white paper, a feature documentary, global photography exhibition and a book launching from April 2023.

The award-winning Australian adventure travel company, Aurora Expeditions, is pleased to announce its new treks in Patagonia commencing from 19 November 2022. The two 10-day itineraries, Patagonia Discovery Trek and Torres Del Paine Explorer, dovetail seamlessly with Aurora Expeditions’ Antarctic sailings.

The treks weave their way through the Patagonian wilderness, providing insight into this barren, but vibrant environment filled with fascinating flora and fauna. Sweeping across the border of Argentina and Chile, the beauty of Patagonia is reminiscent of a David Attenborough documentary. Trekkers experience everything from the dramatic mountain ranges and valleys with cascading rivers, to the glittering glaciers and azure lakes.

“Our highly experienced team has curated several fascinating treks in Patagonia, showcasing the region’s little-explored corners ensuring our travellers see incredible locations and experience nature at its finest,” commented Michael Heath, CEO of Aurora Expeditions.

“Many of our Antarctic passengers wish to extend their time in the South American region and these new itineraries are designed to make the most of their schedule,” added Heath. “The Patagonia experience complements our comprehensive range of Antarctic itineraries. And now with two ships, the Greg Mortimer and the soon-to-be-launched, Sylvia Earle, the 2022/23 season is able to meet the increasing demand for people to take that once-in-a-lifetime trip.”

The Torres Del Paine Explorer stays within the Chilean border and the Patagonia Discovery Trek offers travellers three options enabling them to combine an Antarctic sailing with a timely trek: an Argentina return trip; an Argentina to Chile itinerary and a Chile to Argentina version.

Patagonia Discovery Trek Los Glaciares & Torres del Paine

Discover the vast Patagonian wilderness on this unique guided walking trip, taking in two of Patagonia’s most iconic national parks and the famed Perito Moreno Glacier. Hike rugged trails overlooking iridescent blue glacial lakes, as Andean condors soar overhead among the towering ice-capped peaks.

Torres del Paine Explorer Torres del Paine

Immerse yourself in the treasures of Chilean Patagonia. Discover the dramatic alpine scenery and fascinating wildlife of the Torres del Paine National Park with four full days of hiking with your local guide. Ascend through the Ascencio Valley along the renowned W Trek and take in the stunning views on the lesser-known Lazo-Weber trail. Keep your eyes peeled for rheas, flamingos and guanacos.

Each guided trek is priced from US$5,145 per person twin share and limited to a maximum of 20 hikers, ensuring immersive, life-changing small-group opportunities in the spectacularly scenic Patagonia region of South America.

Passengers can save up to five per cent when booking a trek with an Antarctic cruise.

Trek price includes nightly accommodation with ensuite, most meals, private ground transport and all guide fees and national park entrance fees.

Aurora Expeditions, the award-winning Australian adventure travel company, is partnering with UpSchool, an Australian-based education platform to educate students on the global importance of the Arctic.

UpSchool, which also partners with the United Nations Association of Australia, Canva and the Jane Goodall Institute, provides free courses and resources for children and teachers and is currently being used by over 1,000 teachers in 110 different countries, with around 30,000 children attending class each week including in countries such as Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, Yemen and Ukraine.

The next project for UpSchool is a June 2022 trip to the Arctic, in partnership with Aurora Expeditions. This will result in a brand-new 10-week course exploring the role this region plays in the lives
of every human being on earth, and educating on how everyday choices we all make are putting pressure on the health of our planet. Children participating in the course will be encouraged to make a plan to change the way in which their community lives, to help contribute to positive environmental change.

“We are proud to be partnering with UpSchool on this incredible project that will help to raise awareness of the pivotal importance of the Arctic to the health of our planet,” commented Michael Heath, CEO at Aurora Expeditions.

“Enrichment, education, deepening connections to the remote regions we visit, and creating ambassadors for the protection of the environment is of huge importance to our company, and this partnership is one of many actions we are taking as part of a far-reaching sustainability in an action plan.”

“If you cannot take the child to the world, then bring the world to them,” commented Gavin McCormack, co-founder of Upschool.

“Children need to be emotionally invested in a project if they are going to demonstrate the determination and perseverance required to make a real and tangible difference in the way the world works. Throughout this ten-week course, we aim to bring the wonders of the Arctic to the fingertips of every child on Earth.”

Aurora Expeditions is continuing to grow its global presence with the announcement of the hire of Nicolas Bilek, who will drive Business Development for the expedition operator focused specifically on French-speaking markets including France, Belgium, Switzerland and Quebec.

Bilek brings more than 22 years of travel industry and expedition experience to the Aurora team in its expansion efforts and will use his extensive trade and industry network to grow awareness and drive sales of Aurora Expeditions voyages with French-speaking adventure travellers.

The pioneering expedition company, which is celebrating its 30th year of operations, recently announced the inaugural season of its second purpose-built expedition ship, the Sylvia Earle, launching in November 2022.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Aurora family, and to have the opportunity to grow and market this unique product within these emerging markets,” commented Bilek.

“Aurora’s spirit of true adventure and its understated, relaxed and friendly atmosphere is something I strongly believe will appeal to the markets that I will be helping to develop. We have already begun to see an increase in interest in our active and life-changing voyages to Antarctica and the Arctic from French speakers, and I am confident that by working with our valued trade and media partners, this will continue to grow.”

“This is a pivotal time for growth at Aurora Expeditions, with the successful resumption of our voyages earlier this year and the imminent launch of our brand-new vessel, the Sylvia Earle,” commented Aurora Expeditions’ CEO, Michael Heath.

“True to Aurora’s spirit of innovation, we have carefully evaluated our global market position and identified these French-speaking markets as potential areas for growth. We are well-positioned to welcome an increase of passengers from these source markets on board, with French-speaking Expedition Team members on every voyage, as well as several French-speaking naturalists featuring across our expedition calendar. We are very excited to be working with Nicolas to help expand Aurora’s presence and drive awareness of Aurora’s unique offering.”

Aurora Expeditions has recently released a brand-new Antarctica 2023-2024 and Arctic 2023 season and accompanying 2022-2024 brochure, featuring more than a dozen new and innovative itineraries in some of the world’s wildest and most remote natural environments. Currently, the company is offering early-bird savings of up to 25% off its new season voyages.

Aurora Expeditions just released its new brochure, featuring its Antarctica 23/24 season, along with new Arctic + British Isles in 2023 that will take travellers on an adventure of a lifetime.

Aurora Expeditions is an industry leader with more than 30 years of experience in polar and remote expeditions, focused on active adventure, exploring the wildest and most remote regions of our planet while travelling with the utmost respect for the natural environment.

Here are some of the reasons why you should join Aurora Expeditions’ new Antarctica 23/24 season, along with Arctic + British Isles in 2023.

Awe-inspiring Antarctica

You can be a 21st-century explorer with Aurora Expeditions’ Antarctic adventures. The award-winning Australian adventure travel company, Aurora Expeditions, has recently completed its return season to Antarctica and is celebrating a 100% success rate for its first season in almost two years.

There is no doubt that Antarctica is one of the last, great untamed continents on planet Earth and it is part of the bucket list of many people. Antarctica is almost an alien landscape filled with both heroic and harrowing stories.

The new Antarctica 23/24 season will take expeditioners to destinations including the spectacular Antarctic Peninsula, which is the most accessible part of the continent. Only 40 hours or so south of Cape Horn by ship lies a rugged spine of mountains flanked by huge glaciers. The western coast is etched with fjords; dozens of islands lie offshore. The result is a glorious maze of sheltered channels and inlets, where modern scientific stations and reminders of early explorers and the whaling industry are scattered among penguin rookeries and seal colonies.

Antarctica Cruise

New itineraries

Aurora Expeditions’ new Antarctica 23/24 season features Aurora’s classic voyages alongside six new and innovative itineraries such as the Antarctic Explorer Express, a 9-day voyage tailored for travellers seeking a briefer adventure to the Antarctic Peninsula, all the way to Circle and Weddell, an 18-day voyage aiming to tick two major Antarctica boxes off travellers’ lists – crossing the Antarctic Circle and venturing into the infamous Weddell Sea. The new itineraries include:

  • Falklands~Malvinas and Antarctic Peninsula
  • Antarctic Peninsula in Depth
  • South Georgia & Antarctic Odyssey featuring South Sandwich Islands
  • Antarctic Explorer Express
  • Deep Weddell Following Nordensköld
  • Circle and Weddell

Travellers looking to explore the Arctic and British Isles during 2023 will also have several new itineraries to choose from. The Svalbard in Depth itinerary offers extra time for deeper and genuine exploration in this magical region; Iceland, Jan Mayen, Svalbard offers a combination of breathtaking contrasts as passengers sail across the Arctic Circle to the High Arctic, while the Complete Northwest Passage voyage will attempt to sail the full length of the Northwest Passage from West Greenland to Nome, Alaska over 30 days. In the British Isles, a new Ireland & Scotland Discovery voyage will explore Ireland’s rugged west coast, the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland Islands over 17 days. New Arctic and British Isles itineraries include:

  • Svalbard in Depth
  • East Greenland Explorer
  • Epic Northwest Passage

In honour of this year’s World Oceans Day, Australia’s award-winning travel adventure company Aurora Expeditions has announced an exclusive release of ten additional staterooms on its February 2023 Antarctic Climate Expedition, led by renowned oceanographer, marine biologist, explorer and conservationist Dr. Sylvia Earle.

Applications for these sought-after spots are open to all that are interested, with Aurora particularly welcoming registrations of interest from thought-leaders in the fields of science, art, education and economics, alongside inquisitive teenagers and corporate executives.

Limited to about 100 expeditioners from around the world, this Climate Expedition is led in partnership with Ocean Geographic, and will confront the consequences of environmental change, the warming climate, and the loss of sea ice in the southern polar region whilst visiting some of the most spectacular wilderness regions of Antarctica.

Comprising conservationists, high-profile personalities and ocean luminaries, the summit will raise public and government awareness of the splendour and importance of the Antarctic, whilst also formulating an outcome of 23 resolutions to inspire transformative change for global net-zero emissions by 2050.

“February 2023 will be a moment in time of a gathering of great minds, a brains trust, for commitments to resolve what it takes to move from where we are now to a better future,” says Dr. Earle.

“The importance of this expedition is to get people together who have different gifts, talents, capabilities, and powers, and come back with a commitment to take a new direction. It’s meant to provoke thought that will lead to action.”

Other outcomes will include a series of lectures, a feature documentary, exhibitions, and a book.

“This is a unique opportunity to be part of a pivotal and far-reaching expedition,” says Aurora Expeditions’ CMO Hayley Peacock-Gower.

“We invite you to discover the beauty and majesty of Antarctica, whilst being part of the legacy that can have a real impact on creating a sustainable and habitable planet.”

The groundbreaking 12-day Antarctic Climate Expedition starts on February 13, 2023, with 2 nights and a full-day conference in Ushuaia, Argentina followed by a 9-day voyage on board Aurora Expeditions’ brand-new ship, the Sylvia Earle, and ends with a post-voyage night in Punta Arenas, Chile.

Named in honour of Dr. Earle, the new purpose-built ship where the Antarctic Climate Expedition will take place is intended to be a floating ambassador for the conservation of the planet. Certified 100% Carbon Neutral and outfitted with a dedicated, fully equipped Citizen Science Centre amongst many other modern amenities, the ship also pays tribute to six pioneering female conservationists from around the world alongside Dr Earle, who are honoured on each of the ship’s public decks: Jo Ruxton, Dr. Asha de Vos, Hanli Prinsloo, Dr. Carden Wallace AM, Bernadette Demientieff and Sharon Kwok.

Applications for this exclusive cabin release are open until June 30, 2022.

Aurora Expeditions has announced its new, purpose-built expedition ship, the Sylvia Earle, will be making her debut voyage on the Subantarctic Safari from November 4-20 2022.

The ship will be christened by its namesake, the renowned marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer Dr. Sylvia Earle, prior to making its way to the wildlife havens of South Georgia and the Falkland Islands.

The 17-day maiden voyage to the Subantarctic Islands will appeal to wildlife lovers and history buffs alike. Beginning in Santiago, Chile and ending in Ushuaia, Argentina, passengers will explore the history-steeped Falkands~Malvinas, a bird lovers’ paradise home to an incredible diversity of charismatic penguin species and the largest colony of black-browed albatross in the world, followed by South Georgia – known for its enormous King penguin colonies and beaches lined with Elephant and Antarctic fur seals. Plus, passengers will have the opportunity to trace the history of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s infamous journeys here.

“We are thrilled to confirm the inaugural season of the Sylvia Earle, and to be debuting her on such a magnificent voyage whose destinations are so representative of Aurora’s spirit of exploration, discovery and education, commented Hayley Peacock-Gower, CMO at Aurora Expeditions.

“This highly anticipated vessel is intended to be a floating ambassador for the conservation of the planet, with a large focus on marine education and conservation in line with Dr Earle’s own longstanding efforts. We are so looking forward to having our adventurous expeditioners join us in exploring some of the world’s wildest, most awe-inspiring and important regions whilst paying tribute to such an incredible hero of our planet.”

Certified 100% Carbon Neutral, outfitted with a dedicated, fully equipped Citizen Science Centre, the ship also pays tribute to six pioneering female conservationists from around the world alongside Dr Earle, who are honoured on each of the ship’s public decks: Jo Ruxton, Dr. Asha de Vos, Hanli Prinsloo, Dr. Carden Wallace AM, Bernadette Demientieff and Sharon Kwok.

“Travelling with Aurora Expeditions on the Sylvia Earle will be an incredible opportunity for people to learn about the planet’s extraordinary marine habitats and the importance of protecting them,” Dr. Earle commented.

“I see great synergy in working closely with a company that shares my vision for the future and which is, from the top down, passionate about the marine environment. I am very much looking forward to christening the ship, connecting with Aurora Expeditions’ passengers, and following its journey in providing countless life changing and eye-opening experiences to many of the planet’s most biodiverse regions.”

Dr. Earle will herself be joining a special Antarctic Climate Expedition during the ship’s maiden season, taking place in February 2023. This voyage will see a collection of thought leaders in the fields of conservation, science, art, education and economics come together to bring about public and government awareness of the importance and the splendour of the Antarctic, and to address the warming climate and loss of sea ice in the southern polar region as a direct threat to the future of human life on this planet.

Expedition members will be expected to help formulate 23 resolutions to inspire transformative changes for global net-zero emissions by 2050.

Like sister ship the Greg Mortimer, the Sylvia Earle features the revolutionary Ulstein X-BOW®. Accommodating an average of 130-140 expeditioners per voyage, every cabin on board has an ocean view and nearly all have balconies. The ship features a unique two-level glass atrium lounge in the bow, a modern lecture lounge, multiple observation areas, Zodiac launching platforms, two restaurants serving excellent meals, a gym and wellness centre, a swimming pool, jacuzzis, a mudroom and many other amenities.

Following her maiden voyage, the Sylvia Earle will continue her inaugural season on several voyages to Antarctica, followed by Costa Rica, the Canadian Arctic, Norway, Greenland, Iceland, Ireland and Scotland. Aurora’s unique activity program and focus on active adventure will continue to play a major part in the expedition experience on the new ship, offering the likes of sea kayaking, scuba diving, polar snorkelling, alpine trekking and much more.

To celebrate the inaugural season, Aurora Expeditions is offering up to 20% off* Sylvia Earle voyages, for bookings up to June 30 2022.

Aurora Expeditions has a new vessel crossing the notorious Drake Passage or the Denmark Strait. Named after a famous and courageous scientist, the Sylvia Earle is up to the task and is ready to face some of the most extreme conditions nature can throw at us.

Due to sail soon, with her inaugural voyage visiting South Georgia and the Falkand Islands this November, the new ship offers expeditioners the adventure of a lifetime on a state of the art vessel. Guests will have the chance to get closer to the natural world and learn a lot from the incredible experience. Here’s why you should board Sylvia Earle’s maiden voyage…

Honouring Dr. Sylvia Earle

Dr. Sylvia Earle | Photo credit: Michael Aw

The new ship honours the highly accomplished marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer, Dr. Sylvia Earle. Dr. Earle is the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and was named by Time Magazine as its first Hero for the Planet in 1998.

Inspired by Dr. Earle’s work, Aurora Expeditions’ latest vessel is 100% Carbon Neutral and purpose-built for expeditions to the most remote places on earth. Featuring the revolutionary Ulstein X-BOW®, allowing the ship to cross oceans more comfortably and efficiently, and with expansive observation decks to bring guests closer to the nature they are about to explore. These make Sylvia Earle the perfect base camp for adventures at the outer limits of human exploration.

Combined with Aurora Expeditions’ 30 years of experience in polar and remote expeditions, the new ship is more than a nod to the highly-acclaimed scientist, it embodies Dr. Earle’s adventure spirit and her long-standing conservation efforts for marine protected areas and ocean wildlife. In line with Aurora’s goals of putting education at the forefront of its experience, the ship also features a dedicated Citizen Science Centre and pays tribute to six additional female conservationists from around the world who are honoured on each of its public decks.

Top-notch features and facilities

The new Sylvia Earle ship is equipped with top-of-the-line features and facilities, which perfectly blend luxury and adventure. Every cabin on the Sylvia Earle has an ocean view and nearly all have balconies. It also features two restaurants serving excellent meals, a gym and wellness centre, jacuzzis, swimming pool and sun deck.

There are also facilities built especially for exploration such as modern lecture theatres, science centre, library, mudroom, multiple observation areas, and Zodiac launching platforms.

One-of-a-kind activity programs

One thing that sets Aurora Expeditions apart from its competitors is its wide-ranging activity programs, which give adventurous expeditioners the chance to deepen their exploration with unique programs dedicated to sea kayaking, scuba diving, polar snorkelling, alpine trekking and much more. This year, Aurora Expeditions will also introduce a brand-new activity – paddling, which will give less experienced passengers the chance to try out a ‘lighter’ version of sea-kayaking on select voyages.

For the Sylvia Earle’s inaugural season, Antarctica will be its hero destination offering several voyages ranging from 9-24 days, with options to sail/fly to skip the Drake passage as well. The Sylvia Earle will also offer a range of add-on adventure activities from kayaking and snorkelling to camping and snowshoeing. The Sylvia Earle is designed to support these activities, making the transition from ship to sea or shore as smooth as possible.

Intimate voyages

Aurora Expeditions is known for its smaller ships allowing them to navigate remote destinations. The Sylvia Earle vessel boasts 71 cabins and has a capacity of 130-140 passengers. Smaller ships mean intimate voyages, enabling camaraderie with fellow expeditioners, more chances to join landings and more time spent with their highly knowledgeable expedition team.

Sweet discount

Lastly, voyages on Sylvia Earle’s maiden season are currently available for up to 20% off for bookings up to 30 June. This is a perfect opportunity for travel agents to encourage travellers to grab the chance to join the maiden voyage of Aurora Expeditions’ newest ship.

Aurora Expeditions is certified 100% Carbon Neutral as part of its long-term and far-reaching sustainability strategy.

This key milestone—achieved in partnership with South Pole, a leading emission reductions project developer and global climate action expert—is the latest step in Aurora’s ongoing commitment to help protect and preserve the planet.

“For more than 30 years, Aurora Expeditions has been deeply committed to responsible and respectful travel,” says CEO Monique Ponfoort.

“As one of the world’s leading polar expedition operators, we are always seeking ways to innovate, educate and create a positive impact for our planet, and we will continue our active sustained efforts to help preserve the beauty and majesty that Mother Nature possesses,”she adds.

The South Pole Climate Neutral Company certification has been achieved by a combination of key sustainability initiatives across the company’s business operations. In a three-step plan in partnership with South Pole, Aurora Expeditions calculates all GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions across its business operations annually.

Aurora then compensates for these emissions by purchasing carbon credits from climate action projects that meet the highest international standards, and sets must-reach goals, targets and timelines to ensure its emission reduction and sustainability programs are best-in-class.

Voted the ‘World’s Leading Polar Expeditions Operator’ in the 2020 World Travel Awards, Aurora Expeditions has chosen to support two climate action projects. Aurora invests in InfraVest Tongyuan Wind Farm, a renewable energy project in northwest Taiwan harnessing wind power for a sustainable and secure energy future.

In addition to supporting an emissions reduction project, Aurora also supports a biodiversity conservation project in Australia. Mount Sandy Conservation on South Australia’s Limestone Coast promotes conservation partnerships between the traditional Ngarrindjeri landowners and non-Indigenous Australians through vital conservation work.

The program ensures permanent protection of a regionally and culturally important pocket of biodiversity-rich land. Birds, animals, and plants flourish undisturbed, while native plants for revegetation are supplied by the local nursery at Raukkan Aboriginal Community, a self-governed Indigenous community 50 kilometres northwest of the project site. Raukkan community members are also employed for onsite works, including vegetation monitoring, fencing, and pest and weed control.

Carbon Neutrality is just one of the actions Aurora is taking. “We plan to accelerate meaningful changes in our active care programs that will make a lasting difference for our people, our expeditions and importantly the future of our planet,” adds Monique.

We aim to create a positive impact by:

  • Continuing to build both our guest and staff legacy for the benefit of the planet
  • Deepening our connection and understanding of the profound and unique places that we explore
  • Enriching the guest experience through onboard lectures and participative Citizen Science programs
  • Creating our new sustainable food program
  • Championing women in conservation. On our newest ship, the Sylvia Earle, the decks are all named and themed after seven global ocean conservationists from Plastics Pollution Campaigner Jo Ruxton and Coral Conservation Champion Dr. Carden Wallace to young conservationists Hanli Prinsloo dedicated to conserving and protecting the world’s oceans through human experience and Dr. Asha de Vos marine biologist, ocean educator and pioneer of blue whale research. Each deck features a curated gallery experience honouring these women and importantly, shining a light on their crucial global environmental causes. Our ships are roving ambassadors for the planet, and we hope that our guests will become ambassadors for the planet.

Australia’s Aurora Expeditions is charting a new course in expedition travel to ensure clarity, commitment and care for its loyal guests, crew and travel trade partners.

The world’s leading polar expeditions operator has postponed the start of its potential spring and summer 2021 sailing season from Australia until there is greater clarity on travel start dates but remains committed to operating a full Antarctic Peninsula programme starting in November 2021.

Guests who have booked a voyage as part of the Australian spring/summer 2021 sailing programme will be able to get a full refund or apply their deposit towards another voyage or leave their deposit as a credit with the company for a future voyage.

“Aurora Expeditions has been working closely with state and Federal governments to bring a vessel into Australia. We continue to receive positive support for this and we thank each government for its constructive engagement,” says CEO Monique Ponfoort.

“Aurora is still working to finalise staff and quarantine arrangements but remains unable to give clarity to passengers on departure voyage dates. As a consequence, we feel it is best to postpone the current itinerary of voyages until that certainty is achieved,” she adds.

Ponfoort reiterates the Australia program decision is a postponement not a cancellation. “In these challenging times of uncertainty surrounding travel start dates, we have taken a leadership position to deliver a clear and committed pathway forward with the utmost respect to both the Government and our guests, staff, expedition team and our travel trade partners,” she adds.

“We are so looking forward to getting back to doing what we do best – endlessly exploring on our ships designed for discovery – and returning to Antarctica in our 30th anniversary year as a world leader of polar expeditions in November 2021,” she concludes.

Monique Ponfoort

Recently appointed CEO with an enviable industry resume, Monique Ponfoort is already making a big splash. With two new state-of-the-art ships in 2021, Aurora Expeditions is well-positioned as a 30 year, trusted brand with really unique, exciting selling points.

Travel Daily (TD): On a personal note, how are you, and what positives can we take from 2020?

Monique Ponfoort (MP): It was a really challenging year for everyone, but I’m very excited and optimistic for the entire industry, especially for the future of expedition cruising.

As an industry, we all need to remain resilient and inspired. That’s what drives us, and it’s also important we support each other across every sector.

I’m very fortunate and humbled to work with such a passionate and extraordinarily motivated team. Aurora Expeditions is an edgy outfit and we are growing every day; the word about us is already out.

2021 is our 30th anniversary and an industry milestone in expedition cruising. We also have a new ship on the way which is another major celebration. The Sylvia Earle, due for delivery in October, will launch with an Antarctic season.

As we increase our fleet’s size, we have so much more exciting product to bring to life, and that’s a huge positive. Forward bookings are very encouraging at pre-COVID registration levels. Many travellers today are gravitating to expedition cruising, and it’s an exciting trend with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to see the most beautiful and remote parts of the world.

Monique Ponfoort (L), CEO of Aurora Expeditions, and Steve McLaughlin (R), Director of Sales APAC

TD: What makes Aurora Expeditions so unique?

MP: We are Australian owned with a unique Australian personality and ethos. Aurora Expeditions has more activities than anyone else in the market. We have a pioneering spirit, with 30 years of activity-based expeditions, and are undisputed leaders in this field. A great example is diving or snorkelling around icebergs, what a unique adventure. We encourage all of our passengers to get into the water for an unforgettable experience. Within fitness levels, we take passengers out of their comfort zone, and that’s where lifelong memories are found. Given our ships’ smaller size, we can reach places other larger ships can’t access. We get up-close and can be nimble and spontaneous; we can also offer so much more with fewer passengers.

TD: As the new CEO, what have you achieved so far, and what will the next 12 months look like?

MP: An incredible amount of planning for the future and ‘expedition scenarios’. I love listening to our talented teams, then Mother Nature leads the way, and we deliver the most extraordinary experiences.

With our new ship, the ‘Sylvia Earle’, we are now looking at a broader deployment across the world. We are specialists in the Russian Far East, The Kuril Islands, North-West Passage, Baja, and the Sea of Cortez, right through to Indonesia’s Raja Ampat and the remote Kimberley of Western Australia. Of course, The Arctic and Antarctica are inherent to our DNA.

Aurora Expeditions has a new, fascinating story to tell. Dr Sylvia Earle is an American biologist, oceanographer, explorer and conservationist. She’s known as the ‘heroine of the sea’ with a lifelong mission to save our oceans. We have the proudest of associations, and there is no other fitting name or badge of honour for Aurora Expeditions, new ship.

We have such a huge range of activities: walking, hiking, iceberg-snorkelling, diving, kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing, and even rock climbing. Amateur and professional photographers are also well catered for.

Our onboard lecturers are naturalist, historians, scientists, marine biologist and our expedition team are the best in the market.

Weather permitting our guests can camp on the ice with no tents! Demand for this experience is huge, and passengers love the bragging rights of these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

The expeditions, adventure and education, become infectious and passengers don’t want to miss a moment. Our guests are educated, well-travelled and looking to enrich their minds. They are buying an experience, something that’s so unique, and our word of mouth referrals is powerful; that speaks volumes because, after 30 years, we do our job exceptionally well.

TD: So what’s next for Aurora Expeditions?

We are delighted to have launched an exciting new 2021 Australia program. These outstanding expedition voyages will visit five States and Territories and explore some of our beautiful island’s most remote coastal wilderness areas, reefs and islands brimming with natural wonders and marine life. We are also thrilled to offer adventurous seeking Australian’s the unique opportunity to visit Commonwealth Bay and the Ross Sea in East Antarctica on several voyages departing from Hobart at the end of this year, and into the beginning of 2022.

The 21 voyages, each lasting from seven to 26 days, will offer in-depth and fully immersive experiences and activities in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania between July and December.

Destinations include the Kimberley Coast; Ningaloo Reef and Coral Coast; Kangaroo Island; Bass Strait Islands and Tasmania, with ports-of-call at Darwin, Broome, Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart.

After three decades at the forefront of polar expedition travel, and 23 year’s running expeditions in Australia, we are beyond excited to get back out exploring the best that Australia has to offer. Marine life in these regions include dugongs, dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, whales, whale sharks, saltwater crocodiles, fur seals and sea lions.

TD: What messages do you have for the industry and anyone wanting to sell expedition cruising?

MP: My advice to agents is to gain a better understanding of expedition cruising. It’s not just another cruise; it’s far more immersive, and if you take the time to train, you will enjoy a better conversion rate. Where here to help you, and we have a team who are available and fully supportive.

TD: How does Aurora Expeditions support their trade network?

MP: We offer strong webinars series and are focusing on more sales activity in South East Asia and China. Our trade-friendly sales teams offer support, marketing assets, and cocktail evening events. We encourage you to connect and look forward to working with you and your clients.

On the eve of its milestone 30th anniversary in 2021, Australian-owned Aurora Expeditions has welcomed Monique Ponfoort as CEO, marking the start of an exciting new chapter in small-ship expedition travel.

With a career spanning more than 25 years in the travel and cruise industry, including Qantas, Jetset, Helloworld, and most recently, seven years in expedition cruising managing the Asia Pacific market, Monique brings a wealth of experience and expertise to Aurora Expeditions at a time when the company is expanding.

With a brand new, purpose-built small expedition ship Sylvia Earle scheduled to sail on her maiden voyage in November 2021 – a sister ship to the award-winning Greg Mortimer – and an array of forward-thinking Aurora Expeditions initiatives on the horizon, Monique is both optimistic and excited for the future of expedition travel.

“Despite the challenges facing the global travel and cruise industry in 2020, our many loyal and repeat guests tell us they are eager to set sail again, and we are excited and ready to welcome them back on board once international borders reopen,” Ponfoort said.

Along with the new expedition ship – named after renowned marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer Dr. Sylvia Earle – the company is launching a host of dynamic programmes featuring new global itineraries which will take our expeditioners beyond the polar regions to some of the most biodiverse corners of the planet, and a new Deposit Protection Scheme.

Destinations in the new Global and Arctic 2022 programme will include Alaska, the Russian Far East, Raja Ampat, West Papua, the North West Passage and Baja California.

“Our Health and Safety protocols remain our number one priority, along with ensuring we can provide booking flexibility and confidence for our future expeditioners. We have recently launched our Deposit Protection Scheme in the form of an escrow account to ensure our trade partners and passengers have confidence when booking future voyages with us during this uncertain time,” Monique added. “I am also delighted that we have joined CLIA’s commission protection programme to ensure we continue to support our loyal trade partners over the coming months and years. Now more than ever, we must support each other in the industry.”

Aurora Expeditions has celebrated the sea launch of its latest ship, Greg Mortimer, the first passenger expedition ship with Ulstein X-BOW technology.

Built to polar standards, the Greg Mortimer is a purpose-built ship featuring the latest in naval technology. It’s the first passenger expedition ship to use the patented Ulstein X-BOW, which allows for more gentle sea crossings, faster transit speeds, as well as lower fuel consumption and air emissions.

Greg Mortimer’s strengthened hull is designed to get through sea ice and pack ice. The ship carries ‘return to port’ technology, sonar equipment and satellite communications. It also features sea-level Zodiac and activity loading platforms, black-out blinds to reduce the risk of bird strikes, dedicated observation decks and plenty of outdoor viewing areas.

“The culmination of months of hard work”

Robert Halfpenny, managing director of Aurora Expeditions, said: “This launch is the culmination of months of hard work from everyone involved and we’re delighted the Greg Mortimer has reached its sea testing phase ahead of schedule. Due to set sail on its maiden voyage with guests on 31 October 2019, the final stage of work includes the interior fit-out which is due for completion in the coming months.”

The co-founder of Aurora Expeditions, Greg Mortimer, was thrilled to finally meet his namesake and see for himself the ship, close to completion. He attended the official sea launch in Shanghai, China, along with guests from SunStone Ships and Aurora Expeditions.

Construction of the new ship is progressing ahead of schedule and is now entering the final construction phase. Once the interiors are complete, the ship will be loaded with all the equipment required to operate.

“To have a ship named after me is surreal”

Mortimer commented: “Since founding Aurora Expeditions over 27 years ago, we’ve always worked hard to be at the forefront of adventure voyaging and this ship is certainly that.

“To have a ship named after me is surreal, wondrous and humbling! Was it better than climbing Everest or K2? I would say about the same but just different.”

Australian-based ‘adventure company’ Aurora Expeditions, has joined CLIA as it looks to expand its presence in the UK, Ireland and across Europe.

Aurora Expeditions is a travel company that specialises in small-group voyages to the Polar Regions and other untamed, remote destinations. It was founded 25 years ago by mountaineer and explorer, Greg Mortimer and his wife Margaret, to cater to adventurers seeking intimate experiences in remote destinations through flexible itineraries.

The team at Aurora is currently preparing to welcome its new ship named after its founder, set to be delivered in October 2019. Additionally, the company has announced a new collection of voyages from Antarctica to the Arctic in the summer of 2020, traversing the western side of Latin America through the Panama Canal and the Caribbean. In the light of these plans, Aurora joined CLIA, the world’s largest cruise industry trade association.

Andy Harmer, CLIA senior vice-president membership, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Aurora to CLIA. The expedition sector is one of the most dynamic elements of the global cruise industry and the addition of Aurora’s expertise in this arena is great news for CLIA travel agents.”

CLIA has 15 offices globally and supports policies and practices that foster a safe, secure, healthy and sustainable cruise ship environment for the more than 27 million passengers who cruise annually. The organisation’s mission is to be the unified global organisation that helps its members succeed by advocating, educating and promoting the common interests of the cruising community.

“we prepare for the launch of our new ship the Greg Mortimer next year”

Craig Upshall, Aurora Expeditions’ UK and Europe sales director, said: “Aurora Expeditions is absolutely delighted to be joining CLIA. This has come at a great time for Aurora, as we prepare for the launch of our new ship the Greg Mortimer next year.

“CLIA brings expedition cruising to life through its incredible connections throughout the global cruise community, and Aurora looks forward to welcoming the visibility we hope to gain through this.”
