The latest addition to the buzzing Chaweng Beach, the newly opened Avani Chaweng Samui Hotel & Beach Club brings the glamorous, freewheeling spirit of the 1950s Palm Beach and Miami to Koh Samui’s powdery white sand. An unconventional hideaway that blends unbridled socialising with serenity-inducing pursuits, the property invites guests to swan dive into the sights, bites and sounds of the island as they hit the party circuit.

Sitting mere metres away from the sumptuous stretch of silky white sand, the retro glam spot offers access to the best sunsets, dining, entertainment and people-watching on the island. SEEN Beach Club Samui, the hard-hitting party central next door, throws epic pool parties with top DJs and world-class entertainment on tap. The resort’s social swimming pool feels like a hopping bar, with snug cabanas and a mixology station that moonlights as a check-in area for guests who just want to get on with it.

Va-va-rooms

Samui’s only mid-century modern-inspired beach destination, Avani Chaweng adds a Mad Men vibe to public spaces and its 80 chic rooms and suites. Conceptualised by SOHO Hospitality, the property’s clean lines and organic shapes are infused with a dose of 1950s nostalgia to create sultry spaces where you want to entertain and be entertained in.

With names such as Cool Pool View, Sweet Sea Breeze and Fabulous Sea View the rooms deliver what they promise — picture-perfect views from spacious balconies, modern comforts and interiors that make you want to dress up and head somewhere fabulous. On the ground floor, Funky Poolside rooms with terraces that open onto the courtyard pool take the resort’s social concept to the next level.

At 61 sqm and 90 sqm, Groovy Sea View Suite and Double Groovy Sea View Suite are where pre-parties take place. With costumes, wigs and other good time essentials on loan and vinyl record player and cocktail-making station at their disposal, guests can throw a party as big as their poolside networking skills allow. At Avani Chaweng, suite guests can even call on their private DJ to spin the decks and a paparazzi-for-hire to ensure no moment of revelry goes undocumented.

Party fuel

From dusk till dawn and all night long, Avani Chaweng’s dining venues offer substantial sustenance, snacks and tasty tipples. Start with a decadent bubbly breakfast or a wholesome lunch of Mediterranean, Asian and American flavours at SEEN Beach Club, then decamp to the 24-hour Social Bar where late-night comfort foods and summery cocktails will keep you company as you catch up on emails or relax to sweet jukebox tunes.

Outdoor leisure and fun-in-the-sun activities, meanwhile, range from pool parties, diving and sail into the sunset SEEN style on a magnificent catamaran for an afternoon of sun-kissed fun on the water.  Gym bunnies are well served at AvaniFit, a dynamic, 24-hour facility that aims to challenge fitness enthusiasts with a combination of endurance and resistance training, aerobics and high-intensity interval training, and personal trainers on demand. Other wellness and leisure pursuits include SUP yoga, ice breathing and ice bathing on the beach, and portrait sessions with a resident artist to capture your enviable Avani glow.

Catering to modern travellers who want bookings and check-ins fast and done online, AVANI Hotels & Resorts has introduced online pre-arrival check-ins worldwide with special treats in select properties.

Whether on business or plain leisure, we all want to save time to maximise our travel plans. Especially now, in an age where everything comes fast, we want to eliminate the mundane to have more time soaking in things that matter most. I’ve already tackled the topic of bypassing the front desk in hotels for convenience and now AVANI has turned it into reality for its guests.

For travellers who want to start exploring their destination as soon as they can, or simply just don’t want to deal with the front desk, AVANI Hotels & Resorts has rolled out the online check-in prior to arrival. This expedites the check-in process in any of its properties around the world.

After completing the booking process at http://www.avanihotels.com, guests will receive an option to complete a pre-arrival online check-in. The online check-in process is swift and secure – guests will arrive at the property to find their room and key card ready for immediate occupancy (subject to room availability).

Online check-in privileges

As a special treat for early birds, a dedicated lane will be available for those who completed the online process for an even faster check-in at select AVANI properties.

In addition, some properties have special treats for guests who have completed their check-in online. For example, at AVANI+ Luang Prabang, there will be welcome cocktails, served by the pool, under a hundred-year-old Banyan tree; and at AVANI Riverside Bangkok, guests will be welcomed with a drink at the living space by the reception, before going to their room where they will find special room amenities.

Guests can also make additional requests during their online check-ins, such as extra down pillows, airport transfers, or exploration tips.

AVANI+ Luang Prabang
AVANI+ Luang Prabang

AVANI Hotels & Resorts currently operates 23 properties in the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe; and most recently debuted in Australia, New Zealand, and Laos which opened AVANI+ Luang Prabang just this month.

The brand will open more properties in new destinations such as South Korea, Tunisia, the Maldives, Mauritius, and Oman.

The city of Muscat is best known to travellers as ‘a very elegant town with very fine houses’ due to building policies that enforce cleanliness and traditional design elements. Portuguese 16th-century admiral Afonso de Albuquerque, to whom the quote is attributed, would agree with international hotel owner, operator and investor Minor Hotels that the Omani capital would be the best site for a 250-room hotel.

The Thailand-based company recently joined forces with Safari International Group to develop the new AVANI Muscat Hotel under its vibrant, upscale AVANI Hotels & Resorts brand. Minor’s initial properties in Oman opened in late 2016 under the luxury brand Anantara: Anantara Jabal Al Akhdar Resort on the Saiq Plateau in the north, and Al Baleed Salalah Resort by Anantara in the Dhofar region in the south.

AVANI Muscat Hotel will rise at the progressive residential area of Seeb, a 15-minute drive from Muscat International Airport, in 2020. The hotel will connect via sky bridge to the Al Araimi Boulevard Mall, which opens in 2018 with more than 250 retail and dining outlets, a medical centre and a 10-screen cinema complex.

The new property will unfold in two phases at a total development cost of US$50 million. The first phase will be the main hotel, with 160 guest rooms and suites, an all-day dining restaurant, an AVANI Pantry, a 1,000m² ballroom, eight meeting rooms, a rooftop lounge, a swimming pool and health club. The second phase will open two years later to offer a total of 90 serviced apartments, including studios, one- and two-bedroom units, plus two 175m² three-bedroom apartments.

‘We are delighted to be partnering with Safari International Group to develop this exciting new addition to Muscat’s hotel scene,’ shared Dillip Rajakarier, chief executive officer of Minor Hotels. ‘Seeb will become a significant hub as Muscat grows westwards. We are confident AVANI will represent a great fit in this fast developing neighbourhood.’

Ramzy Fenianos, vice president for development in EMEA of Minor Hotels echoed this, adding: ‘We are pleased to be partnering with Safari International Group on the new AVANI Muscat Hotel as they already have experience in the hospitality sector in Oman, specifically in Muscat where they own and have operated another property since 2012. We will be able to leverage on the group’s existing market knowledge and expertise.’

The Sultanate of Oman is witnessing a major growth in the tourism sector,’ explained Ismail Al-Tubi, owner of Safari International Group. ‘Located in a lively commercial area, the new AVANI will be the gateway to the vital tourism and entertainment sectors that the country needs, especially with the opening of the new Muscat International Airport, which is expected to receive more than 12 million passengers a year.’

Minor Hotels’ portfolio spans 157 hotels and resorts across 24 countries. The group currently operates 13 Middle Eastern properties across its Anantara, AVANI, Tivoli and Oaks brands.

Hotelbeds Group is making a strategic push into the Asian market following its recent acquisitions of Tourico Holidays and GTA, the company’s bedbank managing director, Carlos Muñoz, has told Travel Daily.

Speaking at the company’s inaugural MarketHub Asia event, which is taking place at the Avani Riverside Hotel in Bangkok this week, Muñoz said that the decision to acquire GTA and bring its industry conference to the region “absolutely” represents a strategic push into the Asian market.

“We started in Asia in 2007 at the time we acquired Pacific World. But now is the right time [to expand],” he said in a face-to-face interview. “We have a significant presence [in Asia] and GTA is also strong, so combining the two will make us a better player. We will convert this into more product, better solutions and better service for our customers.”

He added that GTA would “add a significant portfolio of products, of customers, and human capital – knowledge of the [Asian] region,” to the Hotelbeds business.

The GTA acquisition marked the second in a quick-fire double for Hotelbeds, which had earlier struck a deal to buy US-based wholesaler Tourico Holidays. And Muñoz said that the resulting entity would “combine the best of all three companies: the best technology, the best distribution capabilities, the best contracting, in one single business”. “This is the final goal,” he stated.

With the two deals being so fresh, Muñoz admitted that the structure of the final combined company – including branding and office network – is yet to be decided.

“We are already working on the design. This will take the best practices from each and combine these into a single company,” he said. “[In terms of] offices… we need to review the set-up, what GTA and Tourico have, and what should be our future footprint.”

But new employment opportunities seem certain to arise in Asia, as the business will “definitely” need more manpower, according to the Muñoz. He also revealed that the company’s key geographical areas of focus in the region would be China, Southeast Asia and India.

And while the last few months have marked the start of a rapid scaling up of Hotelbeds Group’s business, further growth appears to be on the cards. When asked by Travel Daily if his company would pursue further acquisitions in future, Muñoz replied: “absolutely”.

“In the future we may look to other opportunities. We’ll always be in the market for this. Which segments we don’t know; it may be in future that we look at other segments, more like bolt-on acquisitions related to technology or distribution,” he revealed.

Hotelbeds was purchased by two private equity companies – Cinven and CPPIB – from TUI for US$1.3 billion in 2016.

Hotelbeds Group has chosen Bangkok as the host destination for the first edition of its MarketHub Asia event.

The industry conference will bring together top executives from across the Asia Pacific region, with a series of discussions and presentations from companies including Google, McKinsey and Accenture. Additionally, senior figures from Hotelbeds Group will be addressing delegates, including bedbank managing director Carlos Munoz and director of sales Sam Turner.

The event, which will take place at the Avani Riverside Bangkok from 22-25 May, will be attended by Hotelbeds’ tour operator and OTA clients from across Asia Pacific. The theme of the conference will be “Powered by data, driven by people”, with a focus on how travel companies can use data to grow their businesses.

“I’m really excited to announce the first edition of MarketHub Asia,” said Munoz. “Some of the most exciting technological innovations globally are emerging from Asia Pacific and in the tourism sector is no exception. A revolution is underway in our sector and it is driven by data. How travel industry companies react to this revolution will define their success or failure in the coming years.

The event is being held at the Avani Riverside Bangkok

“The importance of data and how to leverage it is a topic we’ve been pioneering at Hotelbeds Group for some time and this event will help our clients explore what they need to do to keep ahead of the curve.

“We’ve arranged for many leading experts to speak, including Google and our premium sponsorship partners McKinsey, along with other sponsors such as Avani Riverside Bangkok, Riu Hotel & Resorts, Wynn and the Land of Legends,” he added.

The choice of Bangkok has the host city for the first Hotelbeds MarketHub Asia event was no coincidence; Thailand and Bangkok are respectively the top selling country and city destinations in Asia for bookings made via the Hotelbeds platform. In the current year-to-date, Hotelbeds bookings for Thailand have increased by 21%.

The launch of Hotelbeds’ MarketHub Asia follows eight previous editions in the Americas and four in Europe.

The 248 rooms, which include 20 suites, two two-bedroom units and a large three-bedroom option, offer similarly impressive river and city views through full-length windows. Work stations with free Wi-Fi and a media hub docking stations come as standard.

Back in 2011, Minor Hotels launched a sister brand to Anantara that it claimed would deliver a “fuss-free approach” to hospitality, meeting the demands of travellers who desire “good design, excellent service and great value”.

Avani Hotels & Resorts was born, and while Minor has since rolled out the brand to 17 locations across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Avani has still not quite been able to step out of Anantara’s shadow and display all the qualities it originally set out to achieve.

Avani Bangkok Riverside features 248 rooms and suites
Avani Bangkok Riverside features 248 rooms and suites

Now however, Avani is embarking on the next phase of its development with the opening of its first ever new-build hotel – a property that is quite literally breaking down boundaries.

Avani Bangkok Riverside, which is currently in the soft-opening phase and due to fully launch in September 2016, has become the world’s the first purpose-built Avani, allowing it to deliver on the promises laid out when the brand was conceived five years ago.

Set on the banks of the Chao Praya River in Bangkok, alongside the existing Anantara resort, Avani Bangkok Riverside incorporates three key brand elements: honest food, sleep satisfaction and “a design for life”, which means providing functional and flexible spaces that allow guests to “live”, rather than just stay.

Stretching the length of the 11th floor, this “Design for Life” area sees the hotel’s main restaurant merge seamlessly with a spacious lounge area, pantry, bar and working space, where guests can grab a coffee and set up their laptop at desks (with integrated power points) overlooking the river. This is an example of how Avani is trying to break down the boundaries of the traditional hotel experience by giving guests the freedom to come and go as they please.

The hotel's ballroom is the highest in Bangkok, at 11 metres
The hotel’s ballroom is the highest in Bangkok, at 11 metres

This sense of space is heightened – again, quite literally – by the huge windows that wrap around the entire floor, framing spectacular views of the river and allowing natural light to flood in.

This concept of space and light extends to all areas of the hotel. The 248 rooms (which include 20 suites, two two-bedroom units and a large three-bedroom option) feature large windows that showcase the river views, while sliding wooden panels allow guests to open up their bathrooms to create one large open-plan area, or close them for privacy.

And these sliding panels are also put to good use in Avani’s extensive conference and banqueting areas. The hotel houses 27 separate meeting spaces, many of which can be opened up, combined or closed off using sliding partitions. There is also a vast ballroom (Bangkok’s highest, at 11 metres) which can accommodate up to 1,500 guests and has its own show kitchen, plus a large pre-function area, an outdoor balcony, a car lift, and even changing facilities and showers for brides or stage performers.

Avani Bangkok Riverside will fully open in September 2016
Avani Bangkok Riverside will fully open in September 2016

These conference facilities actually opened even before the hotel, and since January Avani Riverside Bangkok has hosted more than 100 events.

More new facilities and features are due to launch prior to the grand opening in September, including a huge waterfall that will flow through the hotel, and the Attitude Rooftop Bar & Restaurant which will be set next to the hotels’ infinity-edged pool and provide views not only of the river, but across the Bangkok skyline.

Until now it has been easy to consider Avani to be Anantara’s lesser sibling; a “light” version of the original luxury brand. With the launch of this brand new hotel, Avani is finally stepping out of Anantara’s shadow and imposing its own identity on the world.

Five years after Minor Hotels originally conceived the brand, Avani Hotels & Resorts has now truly been born.

Minor Hotel Group will launch its Avani brand in Australia, with the addition of two new properties in Perth.

The Bangkok-based hotel group revealed on Monday that it has been selected by Perth’s Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority to develop two sites in the Perth City Link project, following a competitive bidding process. It will now invest AU$110 million (US$85m) developing the Avani Hotel and Avani Residences in the capital of Western Australia.

Perth City Link is a new AU$5 billion central development zone adjacent to the Perth Arena. Minor’s first site will be developed into an upscale Avani Hotel offering more than 250 rooms and suites, while the second lot will feature more than 200 Avani-branded one- and two-bedroom serviced apartments. The hotel is expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2017.

“We are very excited to announce this new hotel and residential development in the centre of Perth, which represents… a significant investment for the group, the introduction of the Avani brand to Australia, as well as a new destination for Minor Hotel Group within Australia,” said Dillip Rajakarier, CEO of Minor Hotel Group.

“Minor Hotel Group is already well established in the country with the Oaks brand and we have been actively exploring opportunities to bring some of our other brands into the Australasia region. The Perth City Link Development will see the debut of Avani, our dynamic upscale brand, and we are looking forward to working closely with the Western Australian government and the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority of Perth to bring this exciting project to fruition.”

Minor entered Australia in 2011 with the acquisition of Oaks Hotels & Resorts, which it has since expanded to more than 50 properties. As yet however, Oaks does not have a presence in Perth.

Some details of the new Avani Hotel in Perth have been revealed, including plans for a rooftop bar, outdoor bars and restaurants, and a public space for events at the front of the property. There will also be pedestrian walkway connecting this space to the Perth Arena.

The company has taken over the management of the former Golden Palm Tree Iconic Resort & Spa, which is built on stilts in the shape of a palm tree stilts, above the waters of the Malacca Strait.

And following a major MYR15 million (US$4.6m) renovation, Minor has relaunched the property as the Avani Sepang GoldCoast Resort.

“We are very happy to launch Avani Sepang GoldCoast Resort in Malaysia, a great addition to our growing Avani portfolio. This resort will be joined later on this year by several further rebranded Avani properties, with the first new-build Avanis to follow next year,” said Dillip Rajakarier, CEO of Minor Hotel Group.

The overwater palm features 392 Polynesian-inspired rooms, plus a range of one-, two- and three-bedroom villas. The resort also offers a range of F&B options with five restaurants and two bars, including a beachfront barbecue with live music and a specialty Chinese restaurant.

There is also a large kids’ club and on-site activity centre with paint-balling and go-karting, plus a swimming pool and spa. The corporate market is catered to with four meeting rooms and a large, 100-pax ballroom.

Avani Sepang GoldCoast Resort becomes only the brand’s fifth property worldwide, following existing resorts in Sri Lanka and Vietnam. But Minor will also launch its first Avani in Thailand in the coming months, following a rebranding of the existing Amari Atrium Hotel. It is also planning a brand new Avani hotel next to the existing Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort.

Minor Hotel Group has announced plans to launch its first Avani-branded hotel in Thailand.

The company has signed an agreement for the management of the Amari Atrium Hotel in Bangkok, and will officially take over the hotel’s operations on 1 October 2013. Following a major renovation, the property will be relaunched as an Avani next year.

“We are very excited to announce our first Avani in Thailand,” said Dillip Rajakarier, CEO of the Minor Hotel Group. “Taking over the management of this well established city centre hotel will be a great launch platform for our new Avani brand here in Bangkok.”

Minor launched its Avani Hotels & Resorts in 2011 as an upscale alternative to its well-established Anantara Hotels & Resorts brand. According to the company, Avani properties will offer “relaxed comfort and contemporary style in city and resort destinations”.

Currently the company operates two Avani hotels, both in Sri Lanka, but plans to expand the brand across Asia, India the Indian Ocean and in the Middle East. Two additional resorts will join the portfolio later this year in Vietnam and Malaysia.

Located on the Thai capital’s New Petchburi Road, the 568-room, 23-storey Amari Atrium Hotel is a well-known hotel in Bangkok and features a 12-storey atrium lobby. Facilities currently include a swimming pool and sun deck, a fitness centre and conference and banqueting space, but the property will now undergo a major renovation before rebranded as an Avani in 2014.

Following the removal of the Atrium hotel from its portfolio, Onyx Hospitality Group will still operate five Amari properties in Bangkok, including the Amari Boulevard and Amari Watergate hotels.

Minor Hotel Group has opened its second Avani resort in Sri Lanka.

The Avani Kalutara Resort & Spa, which is located on the country’s southwest coast, was formerly known as the Kani Lanka resort and has been relaunched under the new brand following a US$5 million renovation. The opening follows the launch of the Avani Bentota in 2011, which became Bangkok-based Minor’s first ever Avani property.

“We are excited to open our second Avani resort and to once again be working with Serendib Leisure, our partners in Sri Lanka, to bring our newest brand to life. Since its opening last November, Avani Bentota Resort & Spa has become one of the leading resorts in the south of the island and we are confident that the newest opening in Kalutara will follow suit,” said Dillip Rajakarier, Minor Hotel Group’s CEO.

The latest resort features 105 rooms, all with private balconies or patios overlooking the ocean, river or gardens. Other facilities include two restaurants, two bars, a gym, tennis court and spa. The resort also offers meeting space for up to 100 people.

Avani was launched by Minor Hotel Group in 2011 as a sister brand to Anantara. It now plans to roll out the brand to destinations across Asia, India and the Indian Ocean and Middle East.
