Just as the summer season approaches, Budapest Airport is already looking ahead to ensure its network for the winter continues to offer a diverse selection of destinations. In a boost to the Hungarian gateway’s route map, Wizz Air has announced the commencement of two new routes from October, adding Copenhagen and Sharm El Sheikh to its ever-growing connections from Budapest.

Launching services to the Danish capital on 1 October, Wizz Air will add a daily connection to Copenhagen. While the ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) faces direct competition on the route, the addition of Wizz Air’s operations shows significant enhancement to Budapest’s connections to the Nordic region with the airport notably linked to Helsinki, Finland; Oslo, Norway; Keflavik, Iceland; and Stockholm and Gothenburg, Sweden.

Later in the month, Wizz Air will commence a twice-weekly service to Sharm El Sheikh. Joining Budapest’s flights to Cairo and Hurghada, the ULCC’s operation will see the airport connected to Egypt’s three main airports and offering passengers a variety of popular destinations.

Balázs Bogáts, Airline Development Director, Budapest Airport, comments: “Wizz Air’s latest additions to our network are both highly desired destinations. Sharm El Sheikh is a perfect vacation spot with its sandy beaches and clear waters, while Copenhagen is renowned for its charm and a wonderful city break. I’ve no doubt both routes will be in high demand.”

Budapest Airport’s route network to Turkey continues to expand with the announcement that Wizz Air will launch direct flights to Istanbul and Antalya this summer. Due to commence a daily service to Istanbul’s main international airport on 31 March and a three-times weekly operation to the resort city of Antalya on 24 May, the Hungarian ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) will become the fourth airline to link the transcontinental country to Budapest.

Serving the Turkish market from Hungary alongside scheduled operations with Pegasus Airlines, Turkish Airlines and SunExpress, the ULCC’s latest routes will see Budapest offer more than 1,500 flights to the large peninsula that bridges the continents of Europe and Asia during S23. Wizz Air’s extra frequencies will give the airline a 20% share of weekly capacity to Turkey from the Hungarian capital city this year (week beginning 5 June 2023).

Balázs Bogáts, Airline Development Director, Budapest Airport, comments: “It’s a hugely positive sign that Wizz Air will be enhancing our connections to Turkey this summer. As one of the most connected airports in the world, Istanbul is the significant crossroad for trade and transportation between the East and the West, while Antalya serves as the gateway to Turkey’s southern Mediterranean region. We’re sure that Wizz Air’s new services will prove popular with both our business and leisure customers.”

Budapest Airport welcomes a significant boost in the Hungarian gateway’s capacity to Hurghada today, with the return of airline partner Air Cairo. The Egyptian low-cost carrier (LCC) has launched a weekly service from Budapest to Egypt’s Red Sea coast – already set to increase to twice-weekly from 29 March 2023 – meaning the airport will see a 173% increase in its capacity to Egypt’s second busiest gateway next summer.

Flown on the carrier’s fleet of 180-seat A320s and 110-seat E190s, the resumption of services in the African market gives Air Cairo an immediate 16% share of weekly seats across all routes in the region. Joining the airport’s existing links to Cairo and Hurghada, the LCC’s new flights will see Budapest offer nearly 40,000 one-way seats to Egypt next year.

Balázs Bogáts, Airline Development Director, Budapest Airport, comments: “After a three-year hiatus, it’s wonderful to see Air Cairo join us again at Budapest with another link to the popular destination of Hurghada. Our latest partner will offer fantastic opportunities for the ever-growing number of Egyptian tourists visiting us every year while also allowing the many Hungarians travelling to Egypt to experience the stunning Red Sea coast.”

Budapest Airport has announced another momentous re-enhancement in its route network development, with the return of Shanghai Airlines, in partnership with China Eastern Airlines. Relaunching a direct link between Budapest and Shanghai on 11 November, the two cities will initially be connected weekly on Fridays. Operated by the carrier’s fleet of 787-9 Dreamliners, the 8,361-kilometre sector will increase to twice-weekly from 21 December with a third weekly flight expected to be added early next year.

“Shanghai, on China’s central coast, is the country’s biggest city and a global financial hub, so the return of this operation is a significant boost for the Budapest-Asia market, as well as making the region accessible again,” says Balázs Bogáts, Head of Airline Development, Budapest Airport. “Shanghai Airlines joined us in 2019 and witnessed rapid demand in the market, signifying Budapest’s global popularity. We have worked closely with our partners to ensure the demand can once again be met and we aim to surpass expectation for all our visitors, as well as continuing to offer opportunities for our passengers from Hungary to discover the globe.”

Budapest Airport has welcomed the arrival of its latest new airline, Korean Air, the flag carrier of South Korea. The addition of the airline’s twice-weekly service to Seoul Incheon will serve as an important enhancement to the Hungarian economy and tourism. Operated by Korean Air’s 269-seat B787 Dreamliner, the launch of the airport’s second connection to Seoul sees Budapest now offer 2,000 weekly seats between the two capital cities during W22, with future frequencies planned.

Speaking at the launch Balázs Bogáts, head of airline development, Budapest Airport said: “The arrival of Korean Air further establishes the cooperation and strong relations between South Korea and Budapest. Having recorded four times as many South Korean visitors during the first five months of 2022 when compared to the same period of last year, we expect this route to be in high demand from both tourist and business perspectives.”

Park Jeong Soo, managing vice president and head of passenger network, Korean Air says: “Korean Air’s inaugural flight to Budapest will allow our customers to experience and appreciate the city’s beautiful nature and diverse attractions. Wizz Air celebrated the arrival of its first scheduled flight to Abu Dhabi International Airport. The flight from Budapest landed in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, to be followed shortly by a new route from Bucharest. The twice-weekly service cements Budapest’s point-to-point market in the Middle East which has witnessed a strong 15% annual growth since 2015.

The ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) will unveil further routes, from Sofia, Katowice and Cluj-Napoca flights, in September. The celebration comes as the new era of sanitised travel begins at Wizz Air.

The carrier has also introduced a range of enhanced hygiene measures, to ensure the health and safety of its passengers and crew. As part of these new protocols, throughout the flight, both cabin crew and passengers are required to wear facemasks, with cabin crew also required to wear gloves.

“We’re delighted to give our passengers even more access to the Middle East, as well as open opportunity for those who wish to experience our renowned city, stimulating growth and providing new prospects for Hungarian trade and tourism,” said Balázs Bogáts, head of airline development, at Budapest Airport.

Budapest Airport has announced a new route to the Spanish city of Santander with its home-based carrier Wizz Air. Launching the 1,846-kilometre sector with the low-cost carrier (LCC) on 2 June, the twice-weekly service becomes the airline’s 70th destination served from the Hungarian gateway.

Providing its passengers with an ideal short-break option to the medieval port, Wizz Air’s new link will boost the airline’s presence in the Budapest-Spain market. The LCC will have close to 54% share of all Spanish flights and seats from Hungary’s capital city during 2020.

“We continue to support our growth and recognise Spain as a key market for Budapest,” said Balázs Bogáts, head of airline development in Budapest Airport. “The city of Santander is a renowned tourist resort in demand from Hungarian travellers, while we continue to welcome an ever-growing number of Spanish visitors each year. This new link will enhance choice for passengers from both countries.”

Santander becomes Wizz Air’s ninth Spanish service from Budapest, joining existing links to Alicante, Barcelona, Castellón, Ibiza, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife South. As it expands route map from the airport, the new link also further consolidates the country’s position as Budapest’s fourth largest market served, offering 12,786 weekly seats to Spain this summer.

Budapest Airport has announced a boost in the gateway’s capacity this winter to Edinburgh and Odesa, with the confirmation of Wizz Air’s latest new schedule. As the home-based airline launches a three times weekly service to Scotland’s capital city and a twice-weekly link to the Ukrainian city of Odesa, Budapest will be able to offer a daily flight to Edinburgh as Wizz Air joins Jet2 and Ryanair on the route while Odesa becomes a new destination on the airport’s route map.

Set to begin on 21 December, the addition of the Hungarian carrier’s new link to Edinburgh will see a total of more than 82,000 seats on offer from Budapest to Scotland through the coming winter season. Edinburgh becomes Wizz Air’s second destination to the highlands after its twice-weekly link to the cultural hub of Glasgow.

“The Scottish capital, with its old town and new town both being UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is the second most visited city in the UK by tourists. Wizz Air will not only be increasing our capacity to Scotland but to Ukraine as well, meeting growing demand and allowing us to offer our customers extended flight options to each region,” said Balázs Bogáts, head of airline development at Budapest Airport.
