Thailand’s Nok Air has formed a new partnership with Boeing aimed at alleviating the low-cost carrier’s pilot crunch.

The Bangkok-based airline has formed a new flight training programme with Boeing, catering for its growing need for fully-trained and qualified captains. Nok is currently having to ground approximately 60 flights per day due to a pilot shortage.

“Boeing’s high quality flight training programme will continue to help us grow our flight crew,” said Nok’s CEO, Patee Sarasin. “Our passengers deserve to be flown by the best pilots in the world and we are working diligently to see that our quality is excellent as our operations continue to expand.”

The training programmes will be conducted by Boeing Flight Services, which provides flight, maintenance and cabin safety training through a network of campuses on six continents. According to Boeing forecasts, 226,000 new commercial airline pilots will be needed in the Asia Pacific region in the next 20 years.

“There is a growing demand for well-trained pilots in Thailand, and we look forward to working with Nok Air as they continue to expand their operations in the busy Asia Pacific region,” said Steve Taylor, chief pilot at Boeing Flight Services.

The training agreement coincided with the delivery of a brand new Boeing 737-800 aircraft to Nok during a ceremony in Seattle.

Nok Air has been suffering from a pilot shortage since Thailand’s aviation authorities tightened the rules governing pilot employment, in an effort to comply with international standards. This followed the downgrading of Thailand’s FAA status last year and an unsatisfactory audit from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

9 Air, which is a subsidiary of Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines, took delivery of its first Boeing 737-800 aircraft on 30 August 2014. The jet has been leased from Transportation Partners (TP), a subsidiary of Indonesia’s Lion Air, which will provide a further two B737s to 9 Air in the future.

The LCC is still unable to launch however, as it is yet to receive its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) from Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). But 9 Air says it plans to commence commercial services before the end of the year, with initial routes connecting Guangzhou with Shanghai, Chengdu and Jieyang, a city in Guangdong province. In future, it plans to expand its network to Southeast Asia.

In May 2014, 9 Air place an order for 50 Boeing aircraft, including B737-800s and B737 MAXs, in a deal worth more than US$6 billion at list prices.

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is home to Asia’s largest carrier, China Southern Airlines, but 9 Air will become the first LCC based at the hub.

“We are investing in further improvements to the interiors of our Boeing 737-800 aircraft to improve the in-flight experience for our customers and provide more consistent access to on demand entertainment,” said Qantas Domestic’s CEO, Lyell Strambi.

“In addition to refreshing the look and feel of the cabin and improving seat comfort, some aircraft will also have improvements to in-flight entertainment for customers.”

Twenty-nine of the airline’s B737-800s already have seat-back IFE, so the remaining 38 aircraft will be equipped with the streaming service.

An additional six seats will also be added to the rear of each aircraft, made possible by changes to the galley and lavatory space.

Work is expected to commence in mid-2015 and be completed within 12 months.

Okay Airways, which is based in Beijing, placed an order on Monday for six Boeing 737 MAX 8s and four standard Boeing 737-800s, valued at US$980 million at current list prices.

The deal will also see Okay Airways convert five B737-800s from a previous order into larger B737-900ER model, making it the first Chinese airline to order the B737-900ER.

“The 737 is the backbone of our fleet and has fuelled our growth with its proven reliability and efficiency,” said Liu Weining, president of Okay Airways. “The addition of the new 737 MAX airplanes will help us explore new regional markets while strengthening our existing domestic routes.”

Meanwhile, start-up carrier Zhejiang Loong Airlines has signed a Letter on Intent to acquire 20 CS100 aircraft from Bombardier, worth US$1.3 billion.

The Hangzhou-based carrier, which was formerly a cargo airline, launched its first ever passenger services in December 2013, and also has outstanding orders with Airbus for its A320 and A320neo aircraft.

SilkAir has taken delivery of its first new Boeing 737 aircraft – the first step in the airline’s move to an all-Boeing fleet.

The new B737-800 was handled over to the Singaporean carrier at Boeing’s factory in Seattle this week, becoming the first of 54 new single-aisle jets to be received by the SilkAir over the coming years. The order for 23 B737-800s and 31 B737 MAX 8s was placed in late 2012, and the new aircraft will gradually replace the airline’s existing fleet of 24 Airbus A319s and A320s.

“The new Boeing 737 aircraft will support our network expansion plans,” said SilkAir’s chief executive Leslie Thng. “The transition to an all-Boeing fleet will enable us to efficiently serve more destinations, fly longer routes and increase capacity on existing routes.”

SilkAir’s first new B737 will enter service on 20 February 2014, flying to destinations including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Phuket and Medan. The second new aircraft is scheduled to arrive on 17 March and will operate to Siem Reap, Danang, Davao, Cebu and Kochi.

All the new B737-800s and B737 MAX 8s will come fitted with Boeing’s ‘Sky Interior’, which offers larger overhead storage bins, LED lighting and sculpted walls. SilkAir will operate the new aircraft with two cabin classes.

“As air travel in the Asia Pacific region continues to grow, Boeing is proud to support SilkAir’s plans to fly more passengers and serve more cities,” said Dinesh Keskar, Boeing’s senior vice president of Asia Pacific & India sales. “SilkAir’s passengers also will enjoy an enhanced flying experience with the comfort of the 737 Boeing Sky Interior.”

In total, SilkAir will take delivery of eight new B737s in 2014.

Fiji Airways took delivery of its first new Airbus A330s in 2013

Fiji Airways has unveiled a major new expansion plan that will increase its fleet size by 25% over the next five years.

The airline, which was formerly known as Air Pacific, will implement a major new five-year plan focusing on three key areas: increasing its fleet and seat capacity, driving higher operating profits, and expanding its route network through partnerships.

In terms of the fleet expansion, Fiji Airways confirmed it would add new Airbus A330-200s, Boeing 737-800s and ATR 72-600s over the coming years, with the overall aim of boosting its fleet size by 25%, and expanding seat capacity by 35%.

This is expected to drive a 39% increase in passenger traffic, which in turn is expected to boost the airline’s operating profits to more than FJ$100 million (US$53m).

“Our aim is to be a world-class airline matched by an ambitious but solid financial plan that expands on current successes and takes our airline to a new level,” explained Stefan Pichler, Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO.

“We plan to increase total staff numbers by 28.5%. Part of our vision for 2017 is to be the Fijians’ employer of choice,” he added.

In terms of network expansion, the Nadi-based airline said it will focus on developing new routes through “interlining and codesharing opportunities”.

Fiji Airways embarked on a major modernisation strategy last year, rebranding itself from the former Air Pacific and renewing its long-haul fleet, with new A330s replacing its old B747s. It also now intends to rebadge its regional subsidiary, Pacific Sun, as Fiji Link.

Fiji Airways and Fiji Link currently operate a combined fleet of 12 aircraft – three A330s, four B737s, two ATRs and two Twin Otters.

The Singapore-based regional carrier placed an order with Boeing in 2012 for 54 new B737s – 23 B737-800s and 31 B737 MAX 8s – to revamp its single-aisle fleet.

The first of these is expected to arrive at Changi Airport in early February 2014 – one of eight new aircraft to be delivered to SilkAir this year.

“Our new Boeing fleet will enable us to put the passenger at the centre of our focus, with the objective to deliver a higher level of quality and experience,” said SilkAir’s chief executive, Laslie Thng.

Argentina’s flagship carrier Aerolineas Argentinas has signed a deal with Boeing for 20 next generation 737-800 airplanes in a deal valued at around US$1.8 billion according to list price.

The contract, which was signed yesterday at a ceremony in Buenos Aires, is the latest milestone achievement by the carrier, which joined Sky Team in 2012.

“This is a landmark order for our company, both in the number of aircraft and in what they signify for our fleet,” said president of Aerolineas Argentinas Mariano. Recalde. “This agreement is a key part of a greater plan to renew our fleet and prepare our operations to accommodate growing demand. The Boeing Next-Generation 737-800, which has more seats than our current single-aisle fleet, will give us more flexibility to operate both domestic and regional routes.”

Van Rex Gallard, vice president of sales, Latin America, Africa & the Caribbean added: “Our partnership with Aerolineas extends back to the days of the Douglas DC-3,” he added. “We have worked side by side with Aerolineas to help provide world-class aviation to the people of Argentina.”

“Aviation is a key element in economic growth and development, and the success of Aerolineas Argentinas’ transformation strategy, helped by the addition of the most efficient single-aisle airplanes flying, will help drive Argentina further ahead in the 21st century.”

Qantas has continued its fleet renewal strategy with the delivery of another new aircraft – its 68th Boeing 737-800.

The new single-aisle aircraft comes equipped with 178 seats, 12 in business class and 156 in economy, with in-flight entertainment systems, power sockets and USB ports in both cabins.

“We know that a modern aircraft like the Boeing 737, with the latest in technology and design, is a major draw card for our customers,” said Qantas Domestic’s CEO, Lyell Strambi. “We also know that by simplifying our fleet and making better use of the increased flexibility and higher frequencies that an aircraft like the Boeing 737 provides, we can remain the airline of choice for domestic travellers.”

Qantas has now taken delivery of 123 new aircraft in just over four years, reducing the average age of its passenger fleet to 7.9 years – the lowest level since the Qantas was privatised in 1993.

It will now take delivery of seven more Boeing 737-800s between now and the end of 2014, and plans to reconfigure the interiors of 10 Airbus A330-300s and 20 A330-200s for use on its domestic routes. This will subsequently enable the retirement of its Boeing 767s.

United Airlines has become the first airline to equip one of its aircraft with a new type of fuel-saving wing extension.

The new ‘Split Scimitar Winglets’ have been installed on one of the airline’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft, and are designed to increase fuel-efficiency by approximately 2%. United is the global launch customer for the new device and has committed to retrofitting its entire B737-800 and B737-900 fleet with the new winglets.

“We are always looking for opportunities to reduce fuel expense by improving the efficiency of our fleet. The… Split Scimitar Winglet will provide a natural hedge against rising fuel prices while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions,” said United’s vice president of fleet, Ron Baur.

Boeing says the new winglet design demonstrates “significant aircraft drag reduction” compared to the standard winglet design. Both Boeing and Airbus are rolling out new wing-tip extensions on their single-aisle fleets, as airline demand greater efficiency.

Air France-KLM has purchased 25 Airbus A350s. The deal, which is for the standard A350-900 version, marks the airline’s first order for Airbus’ new wide-body aircraft. The deal is worth approximately US$6.9 billion at list prices.

Ryanair has firmed up an order for 175 Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The deal, which is worth US$15.6 billion at list prices, is Boeing’s largest ever aircraft order from a European airline. Ryanair currently operates 303 B737-800s.

Singapore Airlines has confirmed an order for 30 Airbus A350s, with options for a further 20. The deal, which was first announced last month, is for the standard Airbus A350-900, but SIA can change the options to the larger A350-1000.

SriLankan Airlines has placed an order for 10 long-range Airbus jets – six A330-300s and four A350-900s. The deal, which is worth approximately US$2.4 billion, will eventually see SriLankan replace its older A340s.

Aircraft leasing company CIT has placed an order for 30 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, worth more than US$3 billion at list prices. These will add to the company’s existing fleet of 350 aircraft, including 128 Boeing jets.

Nigeria-based Arik Air has placed a firm order with Bombardier for three CRJ1000 regional jets and four Q400 turboprop aircraft. The deal, which is worth an estimated US$297 million, will see Arik become the first airline in Africa to operate the CRJ1000

Oman Air has placed an order for five Boeing 737-900ER aircraft. The order, which is worth US$473 million at list prices, marks the first time the airline has ordered the longer version of the single-aisle B737-series.

Boeing has received an order for three B737 MAX 8 aircraft from Travel Service Airlines, based in the Czech Republic. The US$301.5 million deal marks the first time an Eastern European airline has ordered the B737 MAX.

Air Pacific will retire all its Boeing 747s by the end of 2013

The first new A330 is due to enter service on 2 April 2013, flying between Nadi and Auckland. This will mark the start of new five-times-a-week service to the New Zealand city. Brisbane will be the first Australian city to see the A330, with five weekly flights starting on 21 April. Sydney’s A330 flights start on 8 June, with frequencies on the route rising to twice a day from September 2013 and 17 flights per week during peak season, using a mix of A330s and Boeing 737s. The first Melbourne A330 flight will commence in December, with five weekly flights.

The A330 will also start operating to Hong Kong from 4 April, with twice weekly flights every Thursday and Saturday, replacing the B747 that currently operates the route. A third A330 flight will be added in January 2014.

The US will see its first A330 flight on 1 July, when the airline deploys the aircraft to Los Angeles. The current schedule of four weekly B747 flights will be replaced with a mix of A330 and B747 services until November, following which the A330s will fully take over the route, with daily services.

“The entire Air Pacific team is thrilled about the opportunity to start showing our regular customers and new visitors to Fiji our new state-of-the-art A330s,” said David Pflieger, Air Pacific’s managing director & CEO.” “While our goal has always been to offer our customers the best flying experience in the Pacific, our new planes are going to make a huge difference in our ability to deliver on that promise, and we will be revealing even better service and other surprises when we officially become ‘Fiji Airways’ later this year.”

The move to the new A330s comes as Air Pacific rebrands to Fiji Airways. The new A330s, which will feature the new Fiji Airways livery, will come equipped with 273 seats – 24 in business class and 249 in economy.

By the end of 2013, Air Pacific will have retired its entire fleet of B747s and repainted all of its B737s.

Effective 15 November 2012, its daily flight between Kota Kinabalu and Taipei will be upgraded from a 144-seat Boeing 737-400 to a 160-seat B737-800, offering an extra 112 weekly seats in each direction. The B737-800 will feature 16 seats in business class and 144 in economy.

Then from 19 February 2013, MAS will introduce four more weekly B737-800 flights to its Kuala Lumpur-Taipei route, taking the total frequency to 11 flights per week. The new flights depart Kuala Lumpur every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

“With the change of aircraft type and increased services, we will offer 11 flights weekly from Kuala Lumpur and seven flights weekly from Kota Kinabalu to Taipei, providing a total weekly capacity of 5,760 seats between Malaysia and Taiwan in both directions,” said MAS’ Regional Senior Vice President for Malaysia & ASEAN, Encik Muzamil Mohammad.

“This development was also possible due to the significant improvements in the manner we deploy our narrow body aircraft. It has brought the double benefit of allowing us to operate more services for increased revenue generation and by flying the aircraft more often we reduce the cost of every seat kilometre flown,” he added.

China Southern Airlines has decided to retrofit its fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft with ‘Blended Winglets’ – the wing tip extensions designed to make aircraft more fuel-efficient.

The deal, signed with Aviation Partners Boeing (APB), will see 40 B737-700 and 737-800 aircraft fitted with the wing tips. The airline has already equipped 32 of the aircraft with the devices.

“China Southern is operating in an ultra-competitive market and Blended Winglets contribute significantly to an airline’s profitability” said Craig McCallum, APB’s Director of Sales & Marketing. “With 40 additional aircraft utilising our technology, China Southern can expect almost US$11 million in additional contribution to profit annually, while reducing their CO2 output by more than 20,000 tonnes.”

Nearly 5,000 Blended Winglets are now in service on Boeing 737s, 757s, and 767s with more than 200 airlines.

Qantas will resume daily services to the Gold Coast later this year.

From late October 2012, the airline will operate three daily return services between the Gold Coast and Sydney. The move forms part of a major investment in the Queensland hub, with Qantas revamping its existing lounge at the Gold Coast airport and reopening it as a ‘Qantas Club’ by the end of the year. It will also introduce check-in kiosks at the airport.

“Qantas and all of our people are very excited to return to the Gold Coast and relaunch services between Sydney and the Gold Coast,” said Qantas’ Group CEO Alan Joyce. “Our customers have told us that they want a premium leisure and business service, complementing Jetstar’s existing services as part of our two-brand strategy, and we are responding to that demand,” he added.

Qantas will serve the Gold Coast route using its brand new Boeing 737-800 aircraft with the new ‘Sky Interior’, and touch-screen in-flight entertainment in all classes.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has taken delivery of its 75th Boeing 737 aircraft.

The new B737-800 was handed over to the airline during a ceremony at Boeing’s factory in the US, and is scheduled to arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (8 August 2012).

“The 737 has been an amazing airplane for our airline,” said MAS’ CEO, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya. “When we took off on our own as Malaysia’s national airline on 1 October 1972, our inaugural jet flight from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore was operated using the 737. Since then this aircraft has been a very reliable workhorse for both our domestic and regional operations. We continue to be impressed by the 737’s consistent reliability, unmatched economics and innovation in passenger comfort.”

The new aircraft comes with the B787 Dreamliner-inspired Boeing Sky Interior, which features larger overhead storage bins and LED lighting. MAS was the Asia launch customer for the Boeing Sky Interior in October 2010.

Since the airline received its first B737 in 1972, it has operated the 737-200, 737-300, 737-400, 737-500 and 737-800 versions. The airline has a further 35 B737s on order.

The airline, which is the regional subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has placed an order for 31 of the new fuel-efficient B737 MAX 8 aircraft and 23 standard B737-800s. When finalised, the agreement will be worth US$4.9 billion at list prices. SilkAir has also agreed options for a further 14 B737s, which could take the total order to 68 jets.

Deliveries are due to begin in 2014 and continue until 2021, by which time the airline’s fleet will have more than doubled in size. SilkAir currently operates 21 Airbus A319s and A320s, with three more A320s due for delivery by the end of 2013.

The airline’s Chief Executive, Marvin Tan said the order reflects the airline’s confidence in the Asia Pacific air travel market.

“We continue to see very strong growth within the region and these new aircraft will position SilkAir well. They will enable us to spread our wings to even more destinations and increase capacity on existing routes,” Tan said.

“The selection of the B737 follows detailed evaluations and extensive negotiations with both Airbus and Boeing. The order will enable us to maintain a young and modern fleet, with an aircraft that has a proven track record of strong customer appeal, excellent reliability and low operating costs,” he added.

Qantas' A330s no longer require pre-flight checks by engineers
Qantas' A330s no longer require pre-flight checks by engineers

Qantas became embroiled in yet another union dispute today.

The Australian airline filed an application with Fair Work Australia against the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA), which had instructed its members to conduct maintenance checks that the airline believes are no longer required.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) had already given gave Qantas approval for the implementation of a new system of maintenance for its Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A330 aircraft operating on domestic routes. This new system, which commenced yesterday, removes the need for engineers to conduct pre-flight checks of aircraft.

ALAEA however, had pledged to continue the pre-flight checks, although it later it later withdrew its recommendation following a directive from Fair Work Australia.

“We have invested significantly in new aircraft, which enables a more modern approach to servicing and maintenance. Modern aircraft have sophisticated systems which alert us to mechanical issues meaning engineers don’t need to check the aircraft before every single domestic flight,” said Lyell Strambi, Qantas Domestic’s Chief Executive Officer.

“Safety will always be our first priority. As other airlines have already proven, and the safety regulator permits, we can improve our efficiency by deploying the right people to the right tasks without compromising safety,” he added.

ALAEA however, claims that having engineers conducting pre-flight checks leads to significantly more errors being identified on average prior to each flight.

“Despite the Qantas CEO claiming that the new aircraft are self-reporting, of the 282 in-flight defects less than 5% of the defects could have been detected remotely. With such misinformation circulating it is understandable that the Qantas board may have thought this system safe considering not one of those persons has any aviation operating experience,” said ALAEA’s Federal Secretary, Steve Purvinas.

ALAEA has been in conflict with Qantas since last year, and relations further soured last month when the airline announced plans to consolidate its maintenance operations, leading to the loss of engineering jobs in Melbourne.

Boeing has delivered its first Boeing 737-800 to Air Lease Corporation (ALC).

The aircraft is part of an order placed by Los Angeles-based ALC at the 2010 Farnborough Air Show. The new narrow-body jet will now be leased to Korean Air.

“This delivery is another major step in ALC’s mission to help our airline clients modernise and grow their fleets,” said John L. Plueger, ALC’s President & Chief Operating Officer. “The Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 is a cornerstone of our growing commercial aircraft fleet because it provides our airline customers with the most economical, fuel efficient and versatile 162-189 seat passenger airplane in the market.”

ALC has 94 aircraft on order including 77 B737-800s, five B777-300ERs and 12 B787-9 Dreamliners.

“Today’s delivery marks another milestone in our long-term partnership with Air Lease Corporation,” said Bill Collins, Vice President of Leasing Sales for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We are committed to supporting ALC’s growth by delivering the airplanes and services that its airline customers need to be successful.”

China Airlines (CAL) has launched two new routes to Japan.

The Taiwanese carrier yesterday commenced three weekly flights to both Kagoshima on Kyushu Island, and Shizuoka, which lies in the middle of Honshu Island between Tokyo and Nagoya.

Both destinations will be served direct from Taipei’s Taoyuan airport, with flights operating three times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays) using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with eight seats in business class and 150 in economy.

The launches follow the recent signing of an open skies agreement between Taiwan and Japan, and will be followed by the launch of Taipei-Toyama flights on 16 April. The three new routes, plus a range of new flights on existing routes, will expand CAL’s Japanese operations to 119 weekly flights.
