Air Europa has celebrated the arrival of its sixth ‘Dreamliner’ Boeing 787-8, committing the aircraft to its daily Madrid to Havana route.

The flight to Cuba connects with the Air Europa twice-daily flights between London Gatwick and Madrid’s Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas Airport.

Air Europa’s UK director Colin Stewart said: “Havana is one of the most successful routes on our network, it has grown considerably over the past three years and is tipped to become even more popular.  UK passengers can connect through quickly and easily, travelling from London Gatwick to Air Europa’s Madrid hub, before enjoying the comforts of the Dreamliner for their onward journey to Cuba.

“By putting the Dreamliner on the Havana route we are emphasizing our commitment to Cuba – both for leisure and corporate travel. With six Dreamliners now used on our long-haul network, and more to come soon, Air Europa is reinforcing its position as the leading airline flying between Europe and South America.

“Air Europa has recently committed to investing $3.5 billion for the purchase of a total of 22 Dreamliners which will be delivered progressively by 2022. With 6 Dreamliners now in operation, and a further 2 to be added this year, the 787-8 Dreamliner is a key part of Air Europa’s constantly expanding fleet. 14 additional 787-9 models will also come into operation over the next few years.

“The 787-8 Dreamliner is fuel-efficient, has lower emissions, operating costs and is quiet. The cabin features are impressive; spacious and elegant and will ensure maximum comfort for Air Europa’s passengers, with a great inflight entertainment system and onboard wi-fi.”

The flight to Havana is timed to depart Madrid at 15h20, arriving in Havana at 20h25 local time. In the other direction, the flight departs Havana at 22h25 landing in Madrid at 11h55 the next day.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) will launch its first ever flights to Mexico early next year, aboard its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Commencing on 15 February 2017, the Japanese carrier will operate daily services direct between Tokyo’s Narita Airport and Mexico City.

All flights will be operated using a twin-aisle B787-8 aircraft featuring just 169 seats in two classes – fewer than a typical low-cost carrier’s single-aisle layout. The new route will also become the longest flights in ANA’s network.

“We are proud to be the first airline to operate direct, daily flights between Japan and Mexico to better serve the growing business and leisure demand between our two countries,” said ANA’s CEO & president, Osamu Shinobe. “We hope our flight will also contribute to a closer bilateral relationship, economic prosperity and cultural exchange.”

Flights will depart Narita every day at 1640 and arrive in Mexico City at 1355 the same day, having crossed the International Date Line. The return services will then leave the Mexican capital at 0100 and get back into Tokyo at 0635 the following day.

A new Chinese passenger airline has moved on to the global stage by ordering five long-haul Dreamliner aircraft from Boeing.

Formerly a cargo carrier, Shenzhen-based Donghai Airlines only launched its first passenger flights in 2014. But is now looking to spread its wings and has finalised a deal for five Boeing 787-8s worth US$1.32 billion at list prices. The deal was first announced at this year’s Farnborough Airshow, alongside a commitment for 25 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

“Donghai Airlines has undergone steady development over the past 10 years since the beginning of our freighter operations in 2006,” explained Wong Cho-Bau, the airline’s chairman. “Under China’s ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative, we will accelerate our fleet expansion plan to satisfy the rapidly growing air travel market and help build our home base Shenzhen as the transportation hub in southern China.

“Introducing these new next-generation airplanes that deliver the industry-leading fuel efficiency and passenger comfort in their segment market will be a key effort for us to fulfil the plan,” he added.

Donghai Airlines currently operates a fleet of 13 two-class B737s on domestic routes to cities including Harbin, Shenyang, Nanjing and Kunming. It expects to add two more aircraft by the end of this year and reach a total of 120 aircraft by 2025. The delivery schedule for the Dreamliners has not been revealed.

The B787-8 can seat approximately 250 passengers in a two-class layout, and its range of 13,621km allows it to operate some of the world’s longest routes.

Air Canada will launch its first ever direct flights from Montreal to China next year.

In February 2017, the national carrier will open up a new non-stop trans-Pacific service connecting Quebec’s largest city with Shanghai. Flights open for sale on 28 September 2016.

The route will be operated using Air Canada’s brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which features the airline’s latest cabin products including flat-bed seats in business class and a premium economy cabin.

“Building on Air Canada’s success in the rapidly growing Chinese market we are delighted to announce Air Canada’s first direct flights between Montreal and China with the launch of Montreal-Shanghai service next year,” said Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada’s president & CEO. “This also marks the introduction of Air Canada’s first 787 Dreamliner aircraft service from Montreal, further underlining our commitment to expand our global reach and reinforce Montreal-Trudeau as a strategic hub.

“We will be the first and only Canadian carrier to operate daily non-stop trans-Pacific service between Montreal and the Asia Pacific region, and with an elapsed time of 14.5 hours, it will be the longest flight ever operated by any carrier from Montréal-Trudeau airport.

Montreal

“Together with our Star Alliance partners, Air China and Shenzhen Airlines, and partner Juneyao Airlines, a Shanghai based airline operating to more than 30 destinations in China, we will offer the growing number of travellers between Montreal and China even more convenient travel options to Chinese destinations,” Rovinescu concluded.

Air Canada already flies to Chinese cities from Toronto and Vancouver, and it will become only the second airline to fly direct between Montreal and China, following Air China, which links the city with Beijing. The Montreal-Shanghai route is not currently operated by any airline.

Following the launch on 16 February 2017, flights will depart Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport daily at 1330 and arrive at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport at 1640 the next day. The return flights will then take off at 1815 and arrive back in Montreal at 1840 the same day. The outbound departure time will then switch to 1430 from 12-15 March 2017, and then to 1315 from 25 March onwards.

Air Canada will deploy its 251-seat B787-8 Dreamliner on the route, featuring 28 seats in business class, 21 in premium economy and 210 in economy.

Scoot, the Singapore-based low-cost carrier, will start flying to Europe for the first time next summer.

Scheduled to commence on 20 June 2017, the airline will operate non-stop services between Singapore and Athens.

This will become the longest air route operated by any LCC, with a distance exceeding 10,000km, and Scoot will become the first Asian LCC to fly to Europe since Malaysia’s AirAsia X suspended its services to London and Paris in 2012.

“Guests have requested us to fly to Europe for a while, and Scoot is excited to finally oblige,” said Lee Lik Hsin, CEO of Budget Aviation Holdings (BAH), which oversees Scoot and Tigerair. “Our world-first all-787 Dreamliner fleet… has positioned us well to mount our first ever long-haul flight between Asia Pacific and Europe.”

Athens

Flights will operate four times a week, departing Singapore’s Changi Airport every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 0200 and arriving in Athens at 0830. The return flights will take off from the Greek capital at 1200 on the same days, and arrive back in Singapore at 0425 the next morning.

Scoot will deploy its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on the route, which comes equipped with 329 seats in two classes, including 18 in the premium economy-style ‘ScootBiz’ cabin.

These aircraft don’t feature seat-back in-flight entertainment, but they all offer Wi-Fi and in-seat power outlets, meaning that passengers can keep themselves entertained on the 11-hour flights. A range of drinks, snacks and hot meals will also be available.

The announcement of flights to Europe continues the expansion of Scoot’s network; already this year the LCC has started operating its first flights to the Middle East and India.

“Qatar Airways was the Middle East launch customer for the Dreamliner back in 2012, and it is certainly a milestone to accept our 24th and 25th 787s into our fleet today,” said the airline’s group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker.

“Before the end of the year, we will also add two more destinations to our network, including Durban in South Africa, and next year we will launch services to Los Angeles in January, Sydney and Boston in March, Adelaide in May, and Atlanta in June, as well a double daily frequency to New York,” he added.

Qatar Airways’ new Dreamliners will now directly to Doha, with one of them going on display at the Dubai Airshow.

Like its previous 23 B787-8s, the latest aircraft come fitted with 22 flat-bed business class seats in a 1–2–1 configuration and 232 economy class seats in a 3–3–3 layout.

Air Canada will launch direct flights between Toronto and Seoul next year, using its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The trans-Pacific route will commence on 17 June 2016, operating daily. Flights will depart Toronto’s Pearson International Airport at 1335 and arrive at Seoul’s Incheon International Airport at 1620 the following day. The return service will then leave the Korean capital at 1500, arriving back in Toronto at 1450 the same day, having crossed the International Date Line.

“The introduction of non-stop flights between our main Toronto hub and Seoul further strengthens Air Canada’s presence in the growing Asian market,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines.

“This new route will provide some of the fastest travel times for customers travelling to and from South Korea and eastern Canada, the US northeast and South America via our main hub in Toronto. Together with our Vancouver-Seoul service, Air Canada will operate the most flights of any airline between Canada and South Korea with up to 14 flights per week.”

Toronto-Seoul becomes the latest Asian route to be launched using Air Canada’s new fleet of fuel-efficient Dreamliners. The airline already operates its B787s on routes from Toronto to Tokyo, and from Vancouver to Tokyo, Seoul and Brisbane. Dreamliner flights to Delhi and Dubai get underway next week, and the airline will start operating Calgary-Tokyo services in 2016.

“As we renew and grow our international fleet to include 21 Boeing 787 aircraft by 2016 of the 37 on order, we are ramping up conversion of existing routes to Dreamliner service from Toronto to Asia, Europe and South America in order to provide our customers with the comfort and benefits of the most technologically advanced commercial aircraft flying today,” Smith added.

Oman Air’s long-haul expansion plans have taken a major step forward with the arrival of its first ever Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The new twin-aisle aircraft was handed over the airline recently, marking the first of six B787 aircraft ordered by Oman Air in November 2011. The aircraft will be deployed on routes to Europe.

“We’re proud to have Oman Air join our growing base of 787 customers in the Middle East and around the world,” said Ray Conner, president & CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

“Our partnership with Oman Air dates back almost 15 years during which time the airline has been operating the 737 family. We’re delighted to help introduce Boeing twin-aisle airplanes into its growing fleet.”

The new long-haul jet can seat 267 passengers in a two-cabin configuration, with 18 flat-bed seats in business class and 249 seats in economy. The new aircraft is more fuel-efficient than other long-haul jets in Oman Air’s fleet, allowing it to reduce operating costs and potentially open up new routes.

Oman Air becomes the Middle East’s fourth Dreamliner operator, following Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways and Royal Jordanian.

The new Dreamliner completes an initial order for six B787-8s, but Xiamen Airlines has since agreed to acquire six larger B787-9 aircraft from Boeing.

Scoot has become the first airline in the world to operate a fleet entirely consisting of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The Singapore-based low-cost carrier took delivery of its seventh B787 this week, which coincided with the retirement of its last remaining B777-200.

“Since deploying our first Dreamliner in February of this year, Scoot has transitioned to an all-787 fleet in record time – just seven months,” said Scoot’s CEO, Campbell Wilson.

“Scoot’s 787 has allowed us to set a new standard in budget travel, with great new offerings such as Wi-Fi internet connectivity, streaming entertainment and in-seat power throughout the aircraft, complementing the many choices already enjoyed by our guests. Aside from its great cabin ambiance and improved passenger comfort, the 787’s fantastic operating economics allow us to offer even better value airfares.”

Scoot’s fleet now comprises seven Dreamliners, including 335-seat B787-8s and 375-seat B787-9s. All aircraft offer two-class seating layouts. And the airline still has outstanding orders for a further 13 Dreamliners.

LOT Polish Airlines has announced plans to add three new Asian cities to its route map next year.

As part of its new long-haul strategy, the Warsaw-based national carrier will start flying to Tokyo on 13 January 2016, marking the first direct connection between Poland and Japan. The airline will then launch new services to Bangkok and Seoul in autumn 2016.

In addition, LOT will add more flights to its New York and Chicago routes for the 2015-16 winter schedules.

The new routes will be facilitated by the airline’s new fleet of fuel-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

“Opening new long-haul destinations is essential for our development, which is why we will launch them as quickly as possible,” said Sebastian Mikosz, CEO of LOT.

“Even now, connections operated by the Dreamliner are the most profitable part of our business. LOT is the only airline that offers on a larger scale, convenient, regular flights from Poland and New Europe to New York, Chicago, Toronto and Beijing. Four current connections will be supplemented with three more, and later this year, LOT will announce two new long-haul destinations to operate in 2016.

“After opening these five new destinations next year, LOT will more than double its network of long-haul connections compared to today,” he added.

LOT became the first European airline to fly the Dreamliner and now operates a fleet of six B787-8s, with two more scheduled for delivery. The aircraft are equipped with a total of 252 seats – 18 in business class, 21 in premium economy and 213 in economy. All of the airline’s long-haul routes are operated using these aircraft.

Tickets for flights to Tokyo are already bookable, and the Bangkok and Seoul services will go on sale this autumn.

The return services will then leave Brisbane every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 1040, arriving back into Vancouver at 0715 the same day.

“Air Canada continues to strategically expand its international network with the addition of our second Australian destination – Brisbane,” said Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada’s president & CEO. “The new route increases our presence in the Asia Pacific market at a time when trade and travel in the region and between North America is growing, with a further boost expected from the Trans-Pacific Partnership now under negotiation.

“Already, Air Canada commits $2 billion worth of aircraft to the Pacific market each day and Brisbane is the third new Pacific route we have announced in the past year, after TorontoTokyo Haneda and Vancouver-Osaka.”

Rovinsecu added that the route had been made possible by the “operating economics of the Dreamliner”.

Air Canada configures the fuel-efficient B787-8 aircraft with 20 flat-beds in business class, 21 seats in premium economy and 210 in economy class.

This announcement marks the latest stage in Air Canada’s recent expansion. Already this year the national carrier has launched four new international routes, including Montreal-Venice, Montreal-Mexico City, Toronto-Amsterdam and Vancouver-Osaka. New flights from Toronto to Dubai and Delhi will also commence this autumn.

China Southern Airlines will add more Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights to Australasia in the coming months.

Effective 31 March 2015, the Guangzhou-based carrier will deploy the modern twin-aisle aircraft on its Perth route. Flights will operate three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with the B787-8 replacing the Airbus A330-200 China Southern currently operates on the route.

The upgrade will add 10 more seats per flight, and will offer Perth passengers China Southern’s newest cabin products, including flat-bed seats in first and business classes.

Then on 1 August, China Southern will add four more weekly flights to Auckland using its Dreamliner. Currently the airline flies to New Zealand’s largest city 10 times a week, but the frequency will rise to 14 weekly services, or twice a day.

China Southern’s general manager for New Zealand, Mike Ma, said the additional Auckland flights were being offered due to strong demand from Chinese customers. The airline first launched the Guangzhou-Auckland route in 2011, initially with three weekly flights.

“We have great confidence in the Auckland-Guangzhou route due to the high level of tourism demand between China and New Zealand,” Ma said.

China Southern, which became the first Chinese Dreamliner customer in 2013, now operates a fleet of five B787-8s and has a further five on order. It configures the aircraft with 228 seats in three classes – four in first class, 24 in business class and 200 in economy.

China Southern also operates regular flights to Sydney using its Airbus A380 aircraft, Melbourne and Brisbane using an A330, and seasonal charter flights to Cairns.

The carrier, which is a member of the SkyTeam alliance, will take delivery of another four B787s this year, and will use them to launch its first ever long-haul flights to Amsterdam.

Hainan Airlines has revealed that it will launch its first ever flights to the Californian city of San Jose this summer.

Announced in an official Weibo update, the Chinese airline said it will start operating five weekly services to the Silicon Valley hub, direct from Beijing, using its state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Commencing in June this year, the new service will depart Beijing Capital International Airport every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 1430, arriving at San Jose’s Norman Y Mineta International Airport at 1110. On the return leg, flights will depart Silicon Valley at 1310 and get back into Beijing at 1640 the next day.

The San Jose route will be operated using a 213-seat Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, with 36 seats in business class and 177 in economy.

Unsurprisingly, it will be the first direct service from Beijing to San Jose, but not the first link from Asia; ANA currently flies direct between the Californian city and Tokyo, also using a Dreamliner.

San Jose will become Hainan Airlines’ fifth destination in North America, following Toronto, Seattle, Chicago and Boston, all of which operate from Beijing. And the carrier is also planning to fly from Shanghai to Seattle and Boston this year.

Scoot launched its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on the SingaporePerth route yesterday, marking the start of a new era for the low-cost carrier, as it moves towards an all-B787 fleet.

And speaking to Travel Daily on Friday morning, Scoot’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, said the new aircraft is “all we had hoped for and more”.

Scoot has ordered 20 B787s, including 10 375-seat B787-9s – the type that operated the inaugural route – and 10 335-seat B787-8s, which will start being delivered later this year. Both versions will come equipped with two seating classes, economy and ScootBiz, with in-seat power outlets, Wi-Fi and in-flight entertainment streaming. The aircraft will also feature child-free ‘ScootinSilence’ areas.

Wilson told Travel Daily that the new aircraft will have a “significant impact” on Scoot’s operations.

“From an economic perspective they are incredible fuel-efficient,” he said. “[Fuel accounts for] 40-50% of our operating costs, so this will help significantly.” He added that ownership and maintenance costs would also be reduced.

Scoot will receive 11 B787s this financial year, the first six of which will be used to replace its old B777-200s. By August 2015 it will become the first airline in the world to operate an all-B787 fleet.

Following the Perth launch (which will be linked to Hong Kong, via Singapore), Scoot plans to roll out the new aircraft on its Sydney-Singapore service, continuing onwards to Bangkok. The Gold Coast will also welcome the new jets this year.

In terms of new routes, Wilson revealed that new North Asian destinations would be added in June and July this year, followed by the previous-announced Melbourne service in November.

And the airline’s future focus will be on “Australia, China, Japan, Korea, India”, according to Wilson. “New Zealand is not on our radar,” he said, and while European destinations are “not something in the immediate planning”, the CEO added that they weren’t out of the question. “Never say never,” Wilson told us.

Moving forward, Wilson said the 20 B787s Scoot has ordered will be enough for the airline’s immediate growth plans. “It already more than triples out fleet, so that’s quite significant growth.” He didn’t rule out further orders in future, but will “probably not” opt for the largest version of the Dreamliner, the B787-10.

The US carrier took delivery of the new aircraft, a B787-8, on Thursday (22 January 2015) at Boeing’s factory in Washington state. It then flew to American’s home base at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, where it landed on Friday afternoon.

“We are committed to delivering a fantastic product for our customers with the continuation of our unprecedented fleet renewal program and more than US$2 billion in improvements in the customer experience,” said Doug Parker, American’s chairman & CEO.

“The 787 makes our fleet younger and more modern and it will open up new possibilities to connect our customers to the places they want to fly.”

American has ordered up to 100 Dreamliners, including 42 firm orders and 58 options. Of the firm orders, 16 aircraft will be smaller B787-8s and 26 larger B787-9s. The first aircraft is expected to start flying domestically for several weeks before being launched on international flights later this year.

In addition to the twin-aisle B787s, American also has outstanding orders for four more B777-300ERs, and more than 200 single-aisle B737s and Airbus A320s. It becomes only the second US carrier to operate the Dreamliner, following United Airlines.

Japan Airlines will roll out new aircraft and cabin products across a series of international routes this year.

From June 2015, the airline will start deploying its new fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with its Sky Suite cabins, offering 44 fully-flat beds in business class, a new premium economy section with 35 seats, and 116 wider seats in economy class.

This means that in total, the larger B787-9s will feature just 195 seats across the three classes, making it among the most spacious of any twin-aisle aircraft in the skies. It will retain the 2-4-2 economy class seating configuration adopted on the 161-seat B787-8s.

The B787-9 will make its international debut on the Tokyo NaritaJakarta route from 1 July 2015, marking one of a series of Dreamliner deployments planned by JAL this year. The airline’s B787-8s with Sky Suite cabins will also be rolled out on the Narita-Paris and Narita-Delhi routes from 29 March, and on the Narita-Helsinki route from 1 June.

The Sky Suite business class cabins feature fully-flat beds

B787-8s with standard cabin configurations will also be rolled out on the Tokyo HanedaBangkok, Haneda-Ho Chi Minh City, Narita-Ho Chi Minh City, Haneda-Beijing, Haneda-Seoul Gimpo, and OsakaTaipei routes from 29 March.

Also from this date, JAL will increase the number of B787-8 flights on the Narita-Moscow route from three to four per week, while the Narita-Frankfurt route will be upgraded to the larger B777-300ER aircraft. Some routes will see capacity reductions however, including Narita-Sydney, Haneda-Taipei and Osaka-Shanghai.

JAL’s Sky Suites are being progressively rolled out across the airline’s international fleet of B767s, B777s and B787s.

How the world’s Boeing 787-9s compare

The mid-sized version of the Dreamliner series, the Boeing 787-9 was designed to handle approximately 280 passengers in a standard two-class configuration, and has a maximum permitted capacity of 420 seats. So JAL’s 195-seat version is very spacious. In comparison, Etihad Airways’ new B787-9 offers 235 seats in three classes, while Air New Zealand’s has 302 seats. Low-cost carrier Scoot is expected to fit its new B787-9s with 375 seats in a two-class layout.

Xiamen Airlines has taken delivery of its first ever Boeing 787 Dreamliner, as it looks to spread its wings further afield.

The Chinese airline, which is based in the southeastern province of Fujian, is planning to use the brand new aircraft to launch its first ever long-haul services to Europe, North America and Australia.

“We are excited to receive our first 787 Dreamliner which is also the first wide-body airplane of our all-Boeing fleet,” said Che Shanglun, president & chairman of Xiamen Airlines. “With the innovative technology and exceptional efficiency, the 787 Dreamliner will be key to our further growth and international expansion.”

Until last week’s delivery, Xiamen Airlines had operated a single-aisle fleet of more than 100 single-aisle B737s and B757s. But its route map extended only as far as cities in China and Taiwan, as well as key regional hubs such as Singapore, Seoul, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

The new B787s, which come equipped with 237 seats in three classes, will usher in a new long-haul era, following the airline’s entry into the SkyTeam alliance in late 2012.

In total, Xiamen Airlines has ordered six B787-8 Dreamliners, and becomes the third Chinese airline to operate the aircraft after China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines. These new jets form part of the airline’s plan to expand its fleet to 150 aircraft, from the current 106.

Royal Brunei Airlines has launched Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights to Melbourne.

The new fuel-efficient, twin-aisle jet touched down at Melbourne Airport for the first time on Thursday, and will now serve the Australian city daily, direct from Brunei.

Royal Brunei became the first Southeast Asian airline to operate the Dreamliner, when it received its first new B787-8 aircraft in October 2013. It now operates two of the aircraft, with one flying to London (via Dubai) and the second deployed Down Under on the Melbourne route.

The new aircraft comes equipped with 254 seats in two classes, including 18 flat-bed seats in business class and 236 seats in economy.

Royal Brunei becomes the third airline to operate the Dreamliner at Melbourne Airport, following Jetstar and Air India.

Kenya Airways has reached a major milestone in its development, with the arrival of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The Kenyan flag carrier’s first B787-8 departed Boeing’s factory in Everett, Washington state, on Friday 4 April 2014, bound for its new home at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The Dreamliner is the first major commercial aircraft manufactured using composite materials, making it lighter and approximately 20% more fuel-efficient that other similar-sized aircraft.

“The delivery of our first ever 787 Dreamliner not only opens a new chapter for our airline, but also for Kenya,” said Dr Titus Naikuni, CEO of Kenya Airways. “The 787 will enable Kenya Airways to explore new markets, improve its economic performance, provide passengers with revolutionary comfort, while continuing to contribute towards the sustainable development of Africa.”

Kenya Airways’ first B787-8 is scheduled to commence operations to destinations within Africa in the coming weeks. Its first long-haul service to Paris will then get underway in early June. Following this first delivery, Kenya Airways will receive a further eight B787s, which it will use to replace its existing fleet of six B767-300ERs.

In addition to the Dreamliners, Kenya Airways will welcome two more B777-300ERs in the coming months. These new long-range aircraft form part of the carrier’s 10-year plan called “Project Mawingu”, which is focused on increasing the airline’s fleet size from 44 to 107 aircraft by 2021 and extending its network from 62 destinations to 115.

Scoot has unveiled the details of its new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are due to join the airline’s fleet this year.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) initially ordered 20 Dreamliners back in 2006, and later transferred them to its low-cost long-haul unit. The order comprises 10 B787-8 Dreamliners and 10 larger B787-9s. And Scoot has now revealed its plans for the cabin configurations and in-flight products to be used on the new aircraft, deliveries of which will start in November.

“Scoot has been operating for just over 18 months, in which time we’ve expanded to a fleet of six aircraft and 13 destinations, and carried more than two million guests. It’s been an extremely exciting and busy first phase for the airline, but just as exciting is what’s coming next: the induction of Boeing’s latest generation aircraft, the 787, from November 2014,” said Campbell Wilson, CEO of Scoot.

The first Dreamliner to be delivered will be a B787-9, making Scoot the model’s second operator worldwide after Air New Zealand.

Economy class seats will all come equipped with power outlets

Scoot’s B787-9 will be configured to carry 375 passengers, with 35 reclining leather seats in the ‘ScootBiz’ business class cabin, in a 2-3-2 configuration, and 340 economy class seats in a 3-3-3 layout. All passengers will have access to in-seat power outlets and internet connectivity.

Deliveries of the B787-8s will start in mid-2015. These aircraft will have a total capacity of 330 seats, and the same products features as the B787-9.

“The 787’s ambiance, improved cabin humidity and larger windows, plus the new seats and amenities, will afford guests an even better experience than they already enjoy on our wide-body 777s. But, just as importantly, the economic advantages of this later generation aircraft – including a fuel-burn saving of around 20% per seat – ensure that costs and thus airfares can be kept low so that more people can travel more often,” Wilson added.
The destinations to be served by the first Dreamliner are yet to be confirmed, but by mid-2015 all Scoot flights are expected to be operated by B787s. The airline’s current fleet of 402-seat B777-200s will be progressively retired as the B787s are delivered.

Boeing has produced its first Dreamliner built at the increased rate of 10 aircraft per month, as it moves to meet rising demand from airlines.

The new B787-8, which was the 155th Dreamliner ever built, will be operated by Aeromexico.

The new 10-planes-per-month production rate is the highest ever for a twin-aisle aircraft model, and means that the B787 programme has now doubled its output from the five aircraft per month being produced in November 2012. And the production rate is expected to accelerate even further in future.

“This rate increase reflects the continued strong demand for the 787,” said Larry Loftis, vice president & general manager of the B787. “The entire 787 team is now focused on capturing efficiencies at this historic level of production, as well as meeting our commitment to increase the production rate to 12 per month in 2016 and to 14 per month by the end of the decade.”

To date, 115 Dreamliners have been delivered to 16 customers. But Boeing still has outstanding orders for more than 900 B787s, with the larger B787-9 due to enter service in 2014.

Hainan Airlines has started operating its Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the route between Beijing and Seattle.

The new deployment commenced on 10 January 2014, and will initially operate four times a week – every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. But this frequency will be increased to daily during the peak June-August summer period.

The new aircraft will leave Beijing Capital International Airport at 1625, arriving at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport at 1205. The return flight will depart the northwest US city at 1400, getting back into the Chinese capital at 1655.

Seattle becomes the second destination in North America to receive Hainan Airlines’ Dreamliner, following Chicago. But the carrier is also planning to add direct Dreamliner flights between Beijing and Boston from June this year.

Hainan Airlines has so far received six out of a total order for 10 B787-8s. It operates the aircraft with a capacity of 213 passengers in a two-class configuration, with 36 flat-bed seats in business class and 177 standard seats in economy.

Until late last year, it has operated the aircraft solely on domestic routes connecting Beijing to cities including Haikou, Changsha, Hangzhou and Chengdu.

“The arrival of Aeromexico’s first Boeing 787 Dreamliner represents a milestone for the Mexican aviation history,” said the airline’s CEO, Andres Conesa. “Our customers will surely benefit from the world-class service that distinguishes Aeromexico, which we now bring on board the most modern aircraft ever built.”

Aeromexico’s 787 Dreamliners will be configured with 243 seats, including 32 flat-bed seats in first class and 211 seats in economy. The new aircraft will eventually replace the airline’s currently fleet of B767s.

“This is a great day for Mexico, Aeromexico, and for Boeing,” said Van Rex Gallard, Boeing’s vice president Sales for Latin America, Africa & the Caribbean. “The Dreamliner will provide Aeromexico with unrivalled operational advantages, large improvements in fuel efficiency and much lower costs. In addition, it is an airplane that provides significantly better environmental performance. For Aeromexico’s passengers, the Dreamliner delivers a new standard in comfort and elegance – a new flying experience.”

Aeromexico becomes the second Latin American operator of the B787, following Chile’s LAN Airlines. The UK’s Thomson Airways also received another Dreamliner last week, while Air India is expected to welcome its latest B787 on Tuesday (20 August).

Boeing has now taken orders for 930 Dreamliners from 57 customers.

ANA has ordered 55 B787 Dreamliners

All Nippon Airways (ANA) has adjusted its Dreamliner order with Boeing, swapping the B787-8 model for the larger B787-9.

The Japanese carrier revealed today (19 June 2012) that the four B787-8 Dreamliners due to be delivered from the start of the 2013 financial year will now be replaced by the same number of B787-9s. ANA said the larger version would give it “greater flexibility” as it expands its international route network.

The airline, which was the launch customer for the B787, has ordered a total of 55 Dreamliners, of which 36 will now be B787-8s and 19 B787-9s. Since receiving its first B787-8 Dreamliner in September last year, ANA has taken delivery of a further six of the new fuel-efficient aircraft. Initially they operated on domestic Japanese routes, before being rolled out to international destinations in January this year, initially to Frankfurt. ANA plans to launch long-haul B787 services to the US cities of Seattle and San Jose later this year.

The B787-9 is 6.1 metres longer than the B787-8, and ANA told Travel Daily that it will be able to carry approximately 30% more passengers. Currently ANA operates a range of different Dreamliner configurations, with 158 seats for long-haul flights, 222 seats on short-haul routes, and 335 seats on domestic services.

The B787-9 is also more expensive, with a list price of US$227.8 million, compared to US$193.5m for the B787-8. Financial details of the ANA order change were not revealed.
