New cruises include a spectacular 21-day roundtrip from Boston; private island Half Moon Cay remains centerpiece of Caribbean sailings.  Holland America Line’s 2024-2025 Caribbean season opens for booking today, and the premium cruise line is continuing its trend of longer, more immersive cruise itineraries with the introduction of three new voyages that are 14 and 21 days. Also new for this season is adding Boston, Massachusetts, as a Caribbean departure port — in addition to Fort Lauderdale, Florida — and the return of calls at Bermuda.

Caribbean cruises range in length from four to 14 days, span the entire region and include a call at Half Moon Cay, Holland America Line’s award-winning private island.

The 2024-2025 season puts the spotlight on longer voyages, offering travelers more time in the Caribbean and the opportunity to visit more islands on one itinerary.

“Holland America Line is meeting the desire of our guests who want more immersive experiences, and we’re excited to offer new itineraries and a new departure option for this Caribbean season,” said Gus Antorcha, Holland America Line’s president. “With sailings covering the entire region and combinable itineraries up to 35 days, our Caribbean cruises extend to lesser-visited islands and are among the most diverse in the industry.”

Holland America Line’s Caribbean cruises sail from October 2024 through March 2025 and feature five- to 21-day options to the eastern, western and southern regions, including sailings that spend a day discovering the Panama Canal. Six Holland America Line ships will head to the Caribbean — including two Pinnacle Class ships — with the majority of itineraries roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale. Two of the new itineraries depart from Boston.

Nearly all itineraries feature Half Moon Cay, Holland America Line’s award-winning private island in the Bahamas boasting the finest beach in the Caribbean. On select itineraries, evening departures from Puerto Rico, Curaçao, St. Maarten and Aruba mean more time in port and the chance to experience the vibrant Caribbean nightlife.

Guests can cruise to the Caribbean aboard Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam, Volendam and Zuiderdam.

New and Notable Longer Cruises:
New is a unique 21-Day “Perfect Caribbean Escape” cruise roundtrip from Boston aboard Zuiderdam. Departing Oct. 19, 2024, this extended tropical adventure includes a partial Panama Canal transit and a call at Bermuda. Following Bermuda, the ship makes its way to Half Moon Cay; Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos; Curaçao; Aruba; Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama; Puerto Limon, Costa Rica;  Port Canaveral, Florida; and Bimini, Bahamas.

Caribbean cruises range in length from four to 14 days, span the entire region and include a call at Half Moon Cay, Holland America Line’s award-winning private island.

Following the 21-day roundtrip Boston cruise, Zuiderdam offers a new 14-day “Southern Caribbean” itinerary from Boston to Fort Lauderdale departing Nov. 9 that also includes a call at Bermuda. The ship then heads to St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Barbados, Curaçao and Half Moon Cay. The 21- and 14-day departures can be combined to form a destination-rich 35-Day Collectors’ Voyage for the ultimate Caribbean experience.

Another new 21-day Caribbean exploration sails roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale aboard Volendam. Departing Jan. 4, 2025, this in-depth “Ultimate Caribbean” journey deeply explores the area, with calls at Half Moon Cay; Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Tortola; St. Maarten; Antigua; Dominica; St. Lucia; Barbados; St. Vincent; Grenada; Bonaire; Aruba; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; and Grand Cayman.

Western Caribbean:
Holland America Line’s western Caribbean itineraries include six-, seven- and 10-day options. The seven-day cruise calls at Cozumel, Mexico; Half Moon Cay, Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman. The three 10-day itineraries span the region and are combination of ports that include Montego Bay or Falmouth, Jamaica; Mahogany Bay, Honduras; Belize City, Belize; Grandy Cayman, Cozumel, Half Moon Cay, and Bimini.

Eastern Caribbean:
The seven-day eastern Caribbean itinerary includes Grand Turk, St. Thomas, San Juan and Half Moon Cay. A longer 11-day “Eastern Caribbean Wayfarer” itinerary calls at St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Lucia, Dominica, St. Kitts, St. Thomas and Half Moon Cay.

Southern Caribbean:
In addition to the new Boston to Fort Lauderdale cruise, the southern Caribbean itineraries range from nine to 14 days. The nine-day cruise makes way to the ABC Islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao before visiting Half Moon Cay, while the 10-day itinerary also adds Grand Turk and Amber Cove. The 14-day “Southern Caribbean Holiday” cruise departing Dec. 21, 2024, explores St. Thomas, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Guadeloupe, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico and Half Moon Cay.

Tropical Caribbean:
Guests looking for a shorter getaway can embark on the five-day itinerary that visits Half Moon Cay and Amber Cove. The popular seven-day Tropical Caribbean returns with calls at Grand Turk, Amber Cove and Half Moon Cay.

Partial Panama Canal:
Guests looking to visit the Panama Canal without a coast-to-coast transit can embark on the 12-day “Panama Canal Sunfarer” itinerary. In addition to venturing around Panama Canal’s Gatun Lake and a partial transit, the itinerary includes Curaçao, Cartagena, Colon, Puerto Limon,  and Half Moon Cay.

Combine Back-to-Back Cruises for Longer Collectors’ Voyages
Many of the cruises can be extended into Collectors’ Voyages to create the ultimate Caribbean exploration with more economical fares than booking the cruises individually. Ranging from 14 to 35 days, these longer journeys combine nonrepeating, back-to-back itineraries, enabling guests to span more than one Caribbean region and enjoy the ultimate island-hopping journey.

TAP Air Portugal (TAP) is to increase its routes to the Americas in the summer of 2023, offering a total of 17 additional flights during this peak period. This rise, compared to the same period in 2022, will restore pre-pandemic flight levels, and provide more freedom to customers when booking summer holidays.

In line with customer demand, routes to the US are set to gain an additional 10 flights per week next year, with Boston increasing to 14, both Miami and Washington up to 10, and five to Chicago and San Francisco.

TAP will also boost the number of flights to Brazil, with six new weekly services, with Sào Paulo increasing to 20, Belo Horizonte to seven, six to Salvador and Brasília, and four to Belém.

Flights between Lisbon and Caracas will increase from two to three flights per week, allowing improved connectivity to Venezuela. The growth in transatlantic flights from Lisbon is critical to TAP’s goals, with further plans for their Porto hub in the pipeline for the future.

Qatar Airways has launched its first ever direct flights to Boston.

The inaugural service touched down at the city’s Logan International Airport on Wednesday, continuing the airline’s recent US expansion. Qatar Airways has already launched flights to Los Angeles this year and will commence services to Atlanta in June.

“We are pleased to be expanding services on the East Coast of the United States and providing our passengers with a direct link between Doha and the city of Boston. Boston makes a great new addition to our network, and we are pleased to add this historic community to our expanding route map of more than 150 destinations around the world,” said the airline’s group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker.

The new Boston route will be operated using Qatar Airways’ new 283-seat, two-class Airbus A350 aircraft.

The airline became the first in the world to launch A350 flights to the US when it deployed the aircraft on its Philadelphia route late last year. And the A350 will also be deployed on the airline’s Doha-New York route in April, when Qatar Airways’ launches its second daily flight to JFK Airport

“The Airbus A350 is our latest product in the fleet. We are glad to provide our passengers with the latest next-generation aircraft when travelling long-haul with Qatar Airways,” said Al Baker. “But we are also committed to investing in the communities we serve, on the ground. This new route will act as a bridge for trade, commerce and cultural exchange.”

Cathay Pacific has launched a new direct service from Hong Kong to Boston.

The airline touched down at the US city’s Logan International Airport for the first time on Monday, and will now operate the route four times a week using its four-class Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Flights will depart Hong Kong International Airport every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 1800, arriving in Boston at 2130. The return flights will then depart at 0145 every Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, arriving back in Hong Kong at 0535 the following day.

The new service becomes the only direct flight between the two cities.

“The importance of the only non-stop Boston-Hong Kong service goes beyond just linking Boston with this key Asian business and tourism… city,” said Tom Owen, Cathay Pacific’s senior vice president for the Americas.

“We are also opening up the greater New England region to connect with numerous Asian cities, including over 23 destinations in mainland China, as well as key economic and tourism hubs throughout Southeast Asia, such as Singapore, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Bali, and Hanoi.

“This new service cuts over four hours from the current one-stop flight time to Hong Kong via JFK or Chicago and even more to some of the key Asian cities.”

Boston becomes Cathay Pacific’s sixth gateway in the United States and its eighth in North America. The airline already serves Chicago (daily), Los Angeles (four times a day), New York JFK (four times a day), New York Newark (daily), San Francisco (moving from twice daily to 17 flights per week in June), Toronto (10 flights per week) and Vancouver (twice daily).

Qatar Airways will embark on a major expansion of its US network next year, with the launch of flights to three new destinations: Los Angeles, Boston and Atlanta.

All three new routes will be served daily, direct from Doha, and once this phase of expansion is complete, Qatar Airways will offer direct flights to 10 cities in the US.

“As Qatar Airways continues its global expansion, we are delighted to be offering even more gateways in the United States, connecting passengers from destinations across the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, Africa and Southeast Asia,” said Qatar Airways’ group CEO, Akbar Al Baker.

“We look forward to offering a great travel experience to our US passengers… across our network of more than 140 destinations, with a convenient one-stop transfer at the new state-of-the-art Hamad International Airport in Doha.”

The expansion will commence on 1 January 2016, with the launch of daily services to Los Angeles, using a two-class Boeing 777 aircraft. Then on 16 March 2016, the airline will launch daily flights to Boston using its new two-class Airbus A350 aircraft. Finally on 1 July 2016, a new daily service to Atlanta will be launched using a B777 aircraft.

The four new destinations will operate alongside Qatar Airways’ existing US routes to Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Miami, New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC.

And from 1 March 2016, Qatar Airways will add a second daily flight to New York’s JFK Airport, using its A350 aircraft.

Virgin Atlantic has announced it will fly its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from Heathrow to Boston.

Flights onboard the new aircraft will start on 28 October and fly xix times a week. It will be called ‘Birthday Girl’ to commemorate the airline’s 30th anniversary this year.

It’s been three decades since the carrier first operated flights from Heathrow to New York Newark on 22 June 1984.

Following the Boston route the airline’s following Dreamliner deliveries will be used on flights from Heathrow to Washington from December five times a week and to Newark from January 2015 five times a week. The Dreamliner will also be used on daily flights from Heathrow to New York JFK from February 2015.

“We are looking forward to welcoming this aircraft to our fleet. For the last 30 years we’ve been proudly serving and delighting our customers and we know the Dreamliner will set us the bar to take that even further, bringing with it new innovations and a cutting edge product for them to enjoy,” said Craig Kreeger, chief executive of Virgin Atlantic. “The 787-9 will represent over half of our fleet by 2018 which demonstrates our commitment to the Dreamliner as the centrepiece of our future fleet. We are looking forward to the next 30 years.”

The airline will be the first in Europe to have the new Dreamliner model, which will initially be fitted with 31 Upper Class seats; 35 in premium economy and 198 in economy. All passengers will have access to WiFi, with the upper and premium cabins including new design features and the Wander Wall.

There’s no news on how the cabins will look yet but all will be revealed soon. Tickets for the Boston Dreamliner route will start on Thursday (26 June).

Loews Hotels & Resorts is looking to build hotels in Europe as the US hotel chain continues to invest in new and renovated hotels.

The hotel group has already acquired three hotels in the last year with openings in Boston, Washington DC and Hollywood but is looking for further growth across the US, Canada, Caribbean,  Mexico and Europe.

The group’s management has already been scouting locations for a London hotel, with other key European cities also being targeted.

Speaking to Travel Daily, David Wiener, VP sales at Loews said the brand has gone through an “evolution” under president and CEO Paul W. Whetsell, who joined the company two years ago with the instruction to double the group’s portfolio.

“Our development plans aim to boost our portfolio to 30-50 properties which will include further growth in the US and the entry into new markets,” he explained. “The European market is important to us in terms of inbound numbers to the US so it was logical that this s the place to grow.”

Aside from European destinations, Loews has already settled contracts to open a hotel in Orlando early next year as well as one in Chicago in 2015.

Its new builds and recent renovations have come to the tune of US$1 billion in around 18 months, in what Wiener says keeps the hotels “fresh and current” for guests. Guestrooms, public spaces and restaurants have all been renovated in several hotels such as the Regency New York, which will reopen in January.

In fact the company has made itself known by acquiring already infamous properties, such as the Washington DC hotel that JFK opened to the property attached to the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

This association, as well as increased activity in the UK and other markets, has helped increase Loews’ brand awareness.

“The UK market is seeing double digit growth for us as we’ve become more aggressive in the marketplace,” Wiener explained. “The length of stay is increasing and we are finding that those who have multi-centre trips are staying across several properties in one stay.”
