Addition of a Boeing 777-300ER service means Emirates will offer almost 12,000 seats per week to Brisbane combined with its daily A380. Emirates is continuing its restoration of operations in Australia with the introduction of an additional daily service to Brisbane. This comes as the airline proudly celebrates 20 years of serving Brisbane, one of Emirates’ four Australian gateways in its global network.

Starting 1 June 2023, Emirates will operate the second daily flight to and from Brisbane with a Boeing 777-300ER. Emirates flight EK 430 takes off from Dubai at 0230hrs, arriving in Brisbane at 2220hrs. The return flight, EK 431, departs Brisbane at 0250hrs, arriving in Dubai at 1100hrs local time. The airline currently serves Brisbane with a daily A380 flight.

The additional service means Emirates will be back to operating at pre-pandemic levels to Brisbane. The expansion will boost capacity through Brisbane by more than a quarter of a million seats per year both ways.

Barry Brown, divisional vice president Australasia at Emirates, said: “Our second daily service to Brisbane begins as we proudly celebrate 20 years of flying to the sunshine state. Not only will this service cater to the demand of Australians looking to travel overseas, but also welcome more travellers and tourists from Dubai and across our global network to enjoy Queensland, Australia’s tourism mecca.

“The additional service combined with our daily A380 to Brisbane means Emirates will offer almost 12,000 seats to and from Brisbane every week. This is another important milestone in the resumption of our Australian capacity and reaffirms our longstanding commitment to flying down under. We look forward to welcoming more Australians on board to enjoy the Emirates experience.”

“This is a huge vote of confidence in the Brisbane and Queensland market. It effectively doubles overnight the Emirates capacity between the two cities, delivering more seats for major Middle East and European markets. In terms of rebuilding what was lost by covid, this is a significant brick in the wall,” according to Gert-Jan de Graaff, CEO of Brisbane Airport Corporation.

“In October we will celebrate 20 years since Emirates began flying into Brisbane. Through the depths of the pandemic, the airline continued to provide a lifeline to repatriate Australians and enable crucial Queensland exports to continue.

“These new flights will also help put downward pressure on air fares which have been elevated due to high demand and low supply.” The expansion was secured under the USD 200 million joint State Government and industry Attracting Aviation Investment Fund, which was created to boost Queensland’s tourism economy.

Acting premier of Queensland, Steven Miles welcomed the injection of passenger and freight capacity by Emirates: “The extra service is estimated to provide an additional 730 direct and indirect jobs for the state. Emirates’ extensive worldwide network to over 130 destinations will ensure a high level of connectivity with the United Kingdom, Europe, Scandinavia, Africa and North America.”

With the additional frequency starting in Brisbane on 1 June 2023, Emirates will operate 49 weekly flights to Australia, supporting the revival of tourism and bolstering trade and business opportunities by providing travellers with even more access to and from Australia.

Travelex, a market foreign exchange brand, announces results for the third quarter of 2022, with a positive EBITDA and strong revenue growth underlining the company’s successful turnaround following the Covid-19 pandemic and company restructuring.

In Q3 2022, the New Travelex Group generated revenues of £129.6 (approx. USD 159.30) million, £79.7(approx. USD 97.96) million higher than 2021 and 83% of 2019. Recovery vs. 2019 continues to improve with YTD now only 25% behind 2019 (compared to 30% at the end of Q2). The Group produced a positive underlying EBITDA of £17.2(approx. USD21.15) million in Q3, continuing the trend of a return to positive underlying EBITDA from Q2. Q3 was £24.3(approx. USD 29.89) million favourable to 2021 and only £3.1(approx. USD3.81) million behind 2019.

The figures follow the company’s announcement of 1,200 new international jobs being created and a series of major new contract wins and renewals across the APAC, Europe, MET, Brazil and UK regions earlier this year. These wins and renewals include the launch of a full range of bureaux and ATM services at London Stansted Airport, the UK’s fourth largest airport, signed contract renewals with two leading UK supermarkets, and new stores or contracts at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Frankfurt, Cologne, Zurich, Dubai, Hamad International, Singapore Changi and Kuala Lumpur airports, amongst others.

Over the last twelve months the company has also been heavily investing in new digital solutions to help diversify customers’ access to international money. This includes the launch of two new concept stores at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol featuring a hybrid self-service/manned ‘open bureau’ layout. In August 2022 Travelex launched the Foreign Exchange industry’s first ever ATM click & collect service at Heathrow Terminal 5 and Brisbane Airport, enabling customers to pre-order currency online at Travelex’s best possible rate before collecting it contact free from an airport ATM.

Travelex’s figures also come amid a strong recovery for the air travel industry, with the latest IATA passenger data for September 2022 shows that international air traffic was up 122.2% versus September 2021. International air traffic is now at 69.9% of September 2019 levels.

Richard Wazacz, Travelex CEO, said: “We are delighted to be back on a firmer financial footing, and our positive Q3 results are testament to the hard work of every member of the Travelex team – all of whom have helped drive the company forward through challenging conditions in recent times. “With travel returning and Travelex hiring more than 1,200 jobs worldwide, coupled with our increasing investment into new digital solutions, we are both optimistic for the future of the business and hugely excited to serve our customers in new ways.”

Carnival Luminosa officially arrived in Queensland, Australia, marking the first ship from the fleet to be homeported in Brisbane. Carnival Luminosa, which docked at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal with a special “We Love Queensland” message to locals, will set sail on her first cruise on Nov. 6 and operate 28 sailings through April 13, 2023, visiting 60 ports of call across Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific including Airlie Beach and The Great Barrier Reef. These sailings will support Carnival Australia’s anticipated $165 million contribution to the Queensland economy this year.

Including Luminosa, Carnival is adding five beautiful new ships to its fleet over the next two years in a period of growth. Next in the lineup of exciting additions is the delivery of not one but two Excel-class ships – Carnival Celebration to Miami in late November and Carnival Jubilee to Galveston, Texas, next year.

As part of this growth plan, Carnival will also introduce a new concept, “Carnival Fun Italian Style” with two additional ships from sister brand Costa Cruises – starting with Carnival Venezia joining next spring and sailing year-round from New York City and Carnival Firenze in 2024 sailing from Long Beach and adding to Carnival’s strong presence on the West Coast.

“Carnival Luminosa is a testament to our ongoing commitment to Australia, and the start of a period of growth unlike any other in Carnival’s 50-year history,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Having a Brisbane-based ship has been a goal of ours for quite some time, so we are so happy that they are the first market globally to experience the big, bright, fun that this ship has to offer and so excited to give our guests more Carnival ships and itinerary options to sail over the next two years.”

Carnival Luminosa joined the fleet on Sept. 8 and underwent enhancements over the last two months including the addition of Carnival’s signature red, white and blue hull livery as well as guest favorites from other Carnival ships. Following her time in Brisbane, Carnival Luminosa will reposition for seasonal service from Seattle to Alaska next May, before returning to Queensland later in the year.

The post Wildlife tourism market to reach USD135 Billion in 2022: FMI appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

The wildlife tourism market is projected to reach USD 219.9 Billion in 2032 and USD 135 Billion in 2022. Its projected to grow at robust 5% CAGR during 2022-2032. These insights are based on a report on Wildlife Tourism Market by Future Market Insights.

Tigers are an important part of many wildlife sanctuaries, and Ranthambore wildlife sanctuary and Kanha National Park in India are among the few places where tourists can see these animals up close. Many visitors are visiting these sanctuaries simply to see tigers, which is boosting global wildlife tourism.

Wildlife Tourism: Positive and Negative Impact

During the visit to wildlife destinations, tourists contribute to the improvement and conservation of the conditions of wild animals. Wildlife tourism also improves the life of the local tribes, as when tourism flourishes, they get opportunities of improved livelihood. Continuous flow of tourists keep the poachers away from killing endangered species of animals. When tourists visit wildlife sanctuaries certain amount of entrance fee is charged from them.

This money is directed towards animal conservation programmes. However, there are some negative impacts too. The disturbance is always high when tourists approach the wildlife very closely to take photos. Also, the breeding patterns of animals may also get disturbed due to constant pressure of tourists to take photographs of animals with their young ones.

Wildlife Tourism: Drivers

As the entry fee charged from tourists is invested in the conservation of animals, more and more tourists are willing to re-visit wildlife sanctuaries and are ready to pay extra as entry fees, just to ensure animal life conservation. In addition to merely watching animals, tourists are also aware of the various fauna and flora species, which attracts them to wildlife tourism, which is consequently driving the growth of the wildlife tourism sector.

Lot of infrastructural development in and nearby wildlife sanctuaries such as hotels, guest houses and eco-tourism villages and jungles are also attracting a large number of tourists. So now tourists not only visit national parks and wildlife sanctuaries to see animals but also for relaxation which they get by being away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Due to better infrastructural development movie shootings also take place in nearby areas which attract local travellers and this fuels the growth of wildlife tourism.

Many schools arrange trips in wildlife sanctuaries to introduce students to the flora and fauna in sanctuaries. Besides, wildlife photographers who keep visiting the sanctuaries also create robust development in the sector of wildlife tourism. Many wildlife sanctuaries are famous for tigers. Ranthambore wildlife sanctuary and Kanha National Park in India are among the few sanctuaries where tourists can get very close to tigers. Many tourists frequently visit these sanctuaries just to see tigers and this is boosting the global wildlife tourism sector.

Famous Wildlife Sanctuaries Across the World

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane, Australia, Chengdu Moonbear Rescue Centre in China, Noah’s Ark in Georgia, USA, Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand, India are some of the famous wildlife sanctuaries across the globe.

As part of the Group’s APAC Expansion Plan, brands such as Radisson Individuals, Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, and Radisson RED will spearhead widespread growth in the market.

Radisson Hotel Group has announced significant expansion plans for Australasia, with a newly expanded brand portfolio, strategic partnerships and diverse business models that will enable the Group to achieve exponential growth across the region by 2025.

On Radisson Hotel Group’s plans for the Australasia market, Ramzy Fenianos, Chief Development Officer, Asia Pacific, commented: “Our ambitious plans in Australia and New Zealand are a testament to our success in the market and the relevance of our products to both inbound and domestic travelers seeking a diverse range of hotel and resort experiences. Our defined brand architecture is designed to be relevant for our guests and owners, delivering on meaningful experiences. With visa applications for Australia already being at 80% of pre-pandemic levels as of May this year, we’re optimistic that the market will see continued rapid recovery, and a surge in demand from inbound tourists as we approach the summer season.”

The expansion will target capital cities and popular regional destinations across Australia and New Zealand, such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, and will be driven through a combination of growth models such as strategic alliances and master license agreements with its esteemed partners.

Country Inn & Suites by Radisson lobby render

The Group will also seek opportunities to make tactical mergers & acquisitions, and will offer owners attractive, cost-effective options for property conversions. All of these initiatives will be powered by the new Business Unit in Sydney, which is already operational and providing dedicated local development and operational support for owners and investors, enabling them to customize their strategy.

The plans are particularly timely as the Australasia market is starting to see growing demand for hotels and resorts as it recovers post-pandemic, and ahead of the 2032 Olympics. Furthermore, recent research has shown that investors are eager to deploy capital into hotel assets in Australia and New Zealand, with their focus being very much on a “flight-to-quality” strategy, with notable returns being realized through both conversions and mid-market property.

To cater to this, the Group is doubling down on its mid-scale brands in the market – with Radisson Individuals, Country Inn & Suites by Radisson and Radisson RED spearheading the growth of its portfolio in Australasia. With a comprehensive collection of brands ranging from midscale to luxury, Radisson Hotel Group will now be able to customize its Australasian development strategy to meet the specific needs of owners and investors in every market segment and location.

Singapore Airlines has revealed plans to deploy three of its newest aircraft to Brisbane, with the gradual launch of a trio of Airbus A350s to the Australian city.

The modernisation of the route will take place over a four-month period starting from 16 October 2017, when SQ235/256 will change from an A330-300 to the new A350-900. The second A350 will begin operating to Brisbane on 16 December 2017, replacing a Boeing 777-200 on flights SQ245/246. And then on 16 January 2018, the third A350 replace the existing 777-200 on flights SQ255/236 to the Queensland capital.

SIA's new A350 can carry 253 passengers across three cabins
SIA’s new A350 can carry 253 passengers across three cabins

SIA’s new A350 can carry 253 passengers across three cabins, with 42 seats in business class, 24 in premium economy and 187 in economy. This means that passengers flying to and from Brisbane will be able to experience SIA’s premium economy class for the first time.

Seats in all cabins feature individual in-seat power outlets, USB ports and SIA’s latest in-flight entertainment system.

“Brisbane continues to be an important market for Singapore Airlines on Australia’s east coast,” said SIA’s regional vice president, Tan Tiow Kor. “The introduction of these three new Airbus A350-900 aircraft along with the introduction of a fourth daily service is in response to the growing demand we have seen from the Queensland market.

“While this growth is across all cabin classes the demand for additional premium cabin options has been encouraging. With the growing number of A350 aircraft entering our fleet it makes sense to deploy three of them to Brisbane to help meet the premium market demand that we are seeing.

“Not only will it provide the market with our new business class cabin product, it will also offer an alternative premium cabin option, premium economy, which I am confident will be warmly received,” he added.

SIA has a total of 67 A350-900 aircraft on firm order, 16 of which have already been delivered.

Mantra Group, the Australian hotel company, has entered into an agreement to acquire the Art Series Hotel Group.

The deal with the Deague Group is worth approximately AU$52.5 million (US$41.6m) and will see Mantra take control of seven luxury hotels featuring more than 1,000 guest rooms. As a result, Event Hospitality & Entertainment, which manages hotel brands including Rydges, QT and Atura, will terminate its marketing and distribution agreement with Art Series Hotels from November 2017.

For Mantra Group, the acquisition will boost its existing portfolio of 128 properties and more than 21,500 rooms across Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Hawaii.

The seven hotels added to Mantra’s collection include The Cullen, The Larwill Studio, The Olsen, The Blackman and The Chen, all of which are in the Melbourne area, plus The Johnson in Brisbane and The Watson in Adelaide. Each of these hotel names reflects the Australian contemporary artist to which the property is dedicated, with their namesake artist’s works being displayed throughout the hotel.

The Blackman, Melbourne
The Blackman, Melbourne

As well as artistic rooms and hallways, art libraries, art tours and the opportunity to rent art utensils, the hotels feature glass-bottomed pools, outdoor decks, modern fitness centres, large communal spaces and “boutique” function areas.

“This acquisition enhances our existing portfolio and presents a unique opportunity for Mantra Group to increase its footprint across three key locations – Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide – in a single transaction,” said Mantra Group’s CEO, Bob East. “This is a rare opportunity to acquire a collection of exceptional hotels and one which is expected to make a significant contribution to Mantra Group’s business.

“We look forward to working with the owners, team members and guests to ensure a smooth transition,” he added.

The acquisition of Art Series Hotel Group is expected to be completed in late 2017, following which each property will continue to operate under the Art Series brand. This will join Mantra Group’s existing brands: BreakFree, Mantra and Peppers.

Carnival has pledged its support to Queensland following the devastation caused by Cyclone Debbie, as the cruise line returned to the region this week for the first time since the natural disaster.

Ann Sherry, executive chairman of Carnival Australia, inspected cyclone-hit areas with Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and the state’s Tourism Minister, Kate Jones.

She confirmed Carnival’s commitment to Queensland as 2,000 passengers disembarked the Pacific Dawn cruise ship in Brisbane. The vessel will also become the first cruise ship to visit Airlie Beach since the cyclone when it calls at the Whitsundays town on Thursday.

“As a proud Queenslander, I am delighted that our cruise lines such as P&O Cruises can play a part in Queensland’s economic recovery following Cyclone Debbie,” Ms Sherry said. “Coastal areas are heavily dependent on tourism for jobs and the visitor economy generally so the communities need visitors to return to help them rebuild.

“The sight of cruise ships returning to cyclone affected destinations is a signal to people around Australia and internationally that tourism is bouncing back and that they should consider holidaying in Queensland,” she added.

The arrival of P&O Cruises’ Pacific Dawn marks the first of three P&O calls to the Whitsunday coast this month. A total of 34 ships from across Carnival Australia’s various cruise brands are scheduled to visit the region this year – eight more than in 2016 – while 48 visits are scheduled next year.

In 2015-16, cruising contributed AU$976 million (US$732m) to the Queensland economy – 53% more than in 2014-15.

“Record cruising growth in Queensland is perfectly timed for cruise tourism to play a significant role in the post cyclone resurgence of local tourism. We are proud to be part of it,” Ms Sherry concluded.

Qantas passengers travelling overseas from Brisbane Airport now have a new lounge in which to relax before their flight.

The new Brisbane International Lounge is based on the new design recently introduced to Hong Kong and Singapore. Split across two levels and offering 30% more space than the previous lounge, the new facility features hot and cold buffets, a breakfast area, bar, business centre, Wi-Fi, TVs and showers.

Qantas International’s CEO, Gareth Evans, said the lounge was the first of several new facilities the airline would open at Brisbane Airport in the coming months, as part of a multi-million dollar upgrade.

“This lounge marks our continued investment in the entire customer journey. We’ve almost finished the refurbishment of our A330 fleet at the Brisbane Maintenance Facility, added new services to Japan and New Zealand, and the domestic terminal lounges are set for a complete redesign in coming months,” Evans said.

Following the unveiling of the international lounge, Qantas will open a new domestic lounge area, including a new Business Lounge and revamped Qantas Club.

The airline currently operates 57 direct weekly international flights from Brisbane to Auckland, Christchurch, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Noumea, Port Moresby, Singapore and Tokyo.

Cathay Pacific will increase the frequency of its flights to key destinations on three continents later this year.

In North America, the airline’s Hong Kong-San Francisco route will increase from 17 to 21 flights per week, or three per day, from the end of October 2017. These additional services will be operated by an Airbus A350, making San Francisco the first US city to welcome Cathay’s newest long-haul jet.

Flights to Los Angeles however, will be reduced from four to three per day.

In Australia, Cathay will replace its current four weekly services to Brisbane via Cairns with new direct flights to both cities. The switch means that from October 2017 to March 2018, the airline will operate 11 flights direct from Hong Kong to Brisbane and three weekly non-stop services to Cairns. Brisbane’s existing daily flight will also be served by the A350.

This follows the recent announcement that Cathay will increase capacity on its Sydney route from late October.
Cathay Pacific will also expand its European network this winter, moving from four to five weekly flights on the Madrid route, adding a sixth weekly flight to Manchester, and resuming its 11th weekly service to Paris.

“Our network enhancements are designed to improve our customers’ experience through greater choice and added convenience. Increasing frequencies to these popular Cathay Pacific destinations strengthens our ability to connect our passengers with all corners of the world in addition to growing our home hub of Hong Kong,” said Paul Loo, Cathay’s director of corporate development & IT.

Cathay currently operates 108 weekly flights to North America, 93 to Europe and 75 to Australia. The airline will also launch new services to Tel Aviv, Barcelona and Christchurch later this year.

Qantas and El Al have formed a new partnership aimed at improving flight connectivity between Australia and Israel.

Under the new agreement, the national carriers will connect with other’s services via two key Asian transit points: Bangkok and Hong Kong. Qantas will place its code on El Al’s flights between Tel Aviv and the two Asian cities, while El Al will codeshare on Qantas’ flights linking Bangkok with Sydney, and Hong Kong with Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The PMs of Australia and Israel oversaw the signing of the agreement

The partnership will also extend to South Africa, with both airlines codesharing on the other’s flights to Johannesburg – Qantas from Sydney and El Al from Tel Aviv.

The agreement was signed by Gareth Evans, CEO of Qantas International, David Maimon, president & CEO of El Al, in a ceremony attended by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu. It followed the signing of a new air service agreement between Australia and Israel.

“We’re really pleased to be teaming up with El Al and adding Tel Aviv to our network,” said Evans. “It’s a popular destination for the many Australians with family and friends in Israel, including a lot of Qantas frequent flyers who we know will welcome the option to book with us.

“The timing’s especially good when you think about the growing number of Australian companies doing business with Israel’s world-class technology and start-up sectors,” he added.

Maimon added that Australia is a “growing destination for Israelis, especially from the business and tourism segments”.

“To have the national carriers of both Israel and Australia further enhance cooperation will strengthen the ties between our countries and provide a seamless mode of travel for our passengers,” he commented.

Under the arrangement, premium passengers of both airlines will be offered access to airport lounges in the cities included in the codeshare, and frequent flyers will be able to earn miles. The joint flights will go on sale in the second half of 2017.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) will launch its upscale boutique brand, Hotel Indigo, in Oceania for the first time, following the signing of a new management agreement.

The company has penned a deal for a new-build hotel in Brisbane, which is expected to open in 2020. Once complete, Hotel Indigo Brisbane Fortitude Valley will form part of a mixed-use development which will also include residences, office space and retail outlets.

“Since late 2014, we have worked tirelessly to find the right partners and locations for the launch of the Hotel Indigo brand in Australasia,” said Karin Sheppard, AccorHotels’ chief operating officer for Australasia & Japan. “We could not be more thrilled to have secured this ideal site for our first Hotel Indigo signing.

“We expect Hotel Indigo Brisbane Fortitude Valley to be the leading lifestyle boutique hotel in Brisbane, bringing a new and vibrant experience to the city,” she added.

IHG currently has 26 hotels operating in Australia under four brands: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express. Hotel Indigo made its Asia Pacific debut in January 2015 with the opening of Hotel Indigo Bangkok. The brand has since expanded to Singapore and will arrive in Bali’s Seminyak area in 2017.

Tigerair Australia has announced plans to base a third aircraft in Brisbane, enabling it to launch two new routes from the city.

From late March 2017, the low-cost carrier will deploy a third 180-seat Airbus A320 to Brisbane Airport, which it says will create more than 50 jobs. The additional aircraft will also allow Tigerair to launch new services connecting Brisbane with Perth and the Whitsunday Coast.

“The Sunshine State is an integral part of our network with over 70% of all Tigerair domestic services already touching Queensland. That number is set to increase with all the new services announced today,” said Tigerair Australia’s CEO, Rob Sharp.

“We are confident our new services will prove popular with our core market of budget and leisure travellers, whilst at the same time stimulating numerous benefits for the city of Brisbane by way of increased tourism expenditure and job creation.”

The airline’s expansion will commence on 23 March 2017 with the launch of four weekly services between Brisbane and the Whitsunday Coast Airport – a destination already served by Tigerair from Sydney. Then on 1 June 2017, the LCC will commence four weekly flights between Brisbane and Perth, increasing up to six times weekly in peak periods such as school holidays.

Tigerair already flies from Brisbane to five domestic destinations: Adelaide, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne and Sydney.

Hotel facilities include a large corporate lounge designed for early arrivals and late departures, plus two meeting rooms, an indoor heated swimming pool, gymnasium and a restaurant, Café 63 at Swiss-Belhotel.

Swiss-Belhotel’s chairman & president, Gavin Faull, said the hotel would also benefit from its position close to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital precinct and other local facilities.

“We have a unique location with three large and famous children’s hospitals nearby which will bring in a special medical and family market,” said Faull.

“We are very close to the Gabba – the international sports ground where Swiss-Belhotel will be well placed to capitalise on many of the international sporting fixtures at that ground. We are also close to the Brisbane CBD… and Swiss-Belhotel Brisbane will be the ideal business hotel for the CBD market.”

The hotel is on track to open 15 October 2016. It will become the company’s second property in Australasia, following the Swiss-Belresort Coronet Peak, which lies in the ski fields of New Zealand’s South Island.

The AU$150 million (US$114m) project will rise at the Kangaroo Point cliffs, offering panoramic views across the city and river. “We are proud to be launching Banyan Tree Residences Brisbane today, which will be one of the most high end developments of its kind in the city. This project will set a new benchmark for luxury residential in Australia with what is offered, and presents a unique opportunity for prospective buyers,” said Ho.

“Through our network of hotels, resorts, spas and golf courses, we are in an incredibly unique position being able to offer our buyers a lifestyle that has the hallmarks of a premium hotel experience, with connections through to our global network. It seems fitting to be building our first residences in Brisbane, which has proven to be a dynamic new-world city that has already drawn great interest from local and international buyers,” he added.

More than a quarter of the 76 private residences have already been sold in the pre-launch phase. Construction is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2016, with completion scheduled for early 2019.

Airtrain, which connects Brisbane Airport with the city and Gold Coast, has agreed to start distriburing its tickets to travek agents via the GDS.

Under a new agreement with Travelport, the Australian airport rail operator will make its tickets avaiulable to agents through Travelport’s Airport Express app. Travel agents will receive an automatic prompt when an air booking is made into and out of Brisbane Airport, as a reminder of the option of adding Airtrain tickets.

The deal gives Airtrain access to Travelport’s global network of more than 67,000 travel agents, which Chris Basche, CEO of Airtrain, said would give his company “a huge reach to grow our sales”.

“The Airport Express App is a user-friendly tool which enables agents to book our services instantly, ensuring travellers have access to our efficient and comfortable mode of transport when travelling from Brisbane Airport to Brisbane City and the Gold Coast,” he added.

Damian Hickey, Travelport’s vice president for Asia Pacific, commented; “We are pleased to partner with Airtrain to help them grow via the travel agency channel. We look forward to adding further partners to our system and providing our agents with the preferred tools and convenient access to book this mode of transport.”

Travelport launched its Airport Express app in March 2015, becoming the first travel technology platform to offer an app specifically for airport rail services. London’s Heathrow Express has already started using the app.

Air Canada has launched a new service connecting Vancouver with Brisbane.

The inaugural flight arrived in the Australian city on Friday morning (3 June 2016), becoming the only direct service linking Canada and Queensland. These new flights will be ramped up to a daily service on 17 June 2016, and Air Canada will deploy its newest aircraft, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, on the route.

“We are delighted to launch the only non-stop, year-round service between Canada and Brisbane,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines. “Our new Brisbane flights complement our daily flights between Canada and Sydney, solidifying our market-leading position as the airline providing the most seats between Canada and Australia.

“The seamless connections through in-transit pre-clearance facilities combined with our extensive domestic Canada and USA network radiating from Vancouver position YVR to be the preferred trans-Pacific gateway for business and leisure travellers,” Smith added.

The new schedule will see Air Canada’s flights depart Vancouver Airport at 2345 and arrive in Brisbane at 0715 two days later, having crossed the International Date Line. The return services will then leave at 1040 and arrive back in Vancouver at 0715 the same day.

Passengers on the B787 will have the choice of 20 flat-bed seats in business class, 21 seats in premium economy and 210 in economy.

AccorHotels, which is already Australia’s largest hotel operator, has continued to expand its nationwide portfolio with the addition of four new properties.

Announced at the Australasian Hotel Industry Conference and Exhibition (AHICE) in Melbourne, the new properties include two new-build hotels and two rebrandings in three key Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The two new-builds include the 240-room Mercure Sydney Bankstown hotel, which will open in late 2017 as part of a AU$60 million (US$46m) mixed-use development in western Sydney, and the 238-room Novotel Brisbane South Bank, which will open close to the Brisbane Convention Centre in late 2018.

AccorHotels has also expanded its economy hotel collection with the rebranding of the former Tune Hotel in Melbourne, which now becomes the 235-room ibis Melbourne Swanston Street, and an agreement to transform a former backpacker hostel into the 97-room ibis Budget Sydney Central, which is due to open in mid-2017.

“AccorHotels has the largest hotel pipeline in the Asia Pacific region outside of China, with more than 230 hotels and 48,000 rooms in the pipeline. Locally across Australia and New Zealand our development team work very hard to grow our pipeline with a balanced footprint across the luxury and upscale, midscale and economy segments,” said Simon McGrath, the company’s chief operating officer for the Pacific region.

“Within the next two years will see over 10 new hotel projects scheduled to open or commence construction between 2016 and 2018, adding some 2,500 rooms across Australia and New Zealand.”

Banyan Tree, the Singapore-based luxury hotel group, has unveiled plans to open its first branded residences in Australia.

The AU$150 million (US$107m) project will bring 76 new private residences to Brisbane, as part of a new development overlooking the river, city and botanic gardens.

Construction is due to commence in the second half of 2016 with completion expected in late 2018.

“We are excited to launch our first Banyan Tree branded residences in Brisbane. The city was a natural choice given its 2.2 million residents and AU$135 billion economy. As the leader in the country’s infrastructure boom, there are strong growth projections for Brisbane as it continues to transform and evolve,” said Banyan Tree’s executive chairman, Ho Kwon Ping.

Set in an eye-catching new building featuring three “undulating wave structures”, Banyan Tree Residences Brisbane will include 76 freehold private residences over 10 levels: four penthouses (three with rooftop infinity pools and private garden terraces), 27 three-bedroom apartments and 45 two-bedroom apartments.

Facilities will include a Banyan Tree Spa, retail area, gym, dining venues, function rooms and a rooftop garden with private event space, barbeque facilities, daybeds and a large infinity-edged swimming pool.

Residents will also be offered membership of the Banyan Tree Sanctuary Club, which entitles them to discounts and privileges at the group’s global network of resorts and spas, and access to the Banyan Tree Private Collection, a global portfolio of villas.

Air Canada will start flying daily between Vancouver and Brisbane next summer.

From 17 June 2016, the airline will add four more weekly services to its existing three-flights-a-week schedule.

All flights will be operated using Air Canada’s new Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, which features 20 flat-bed seats in business class, 21 seats in premium economy and 210 in economy.

“Customer response to our announcement of the only non-stop flights between Canada and Brisbane has been very positive, and we thank federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau for the revised bilateral agreement which enables us to increase our presence in this important Asia Pacific market. As a result, Air Canada will boost its new Vancouver-Brisbane service to daily flights,” said Benjamin Smith, Air Canada’s president of passenger airlines.

The Brisbane route forms part of a major Asia Pacific expansion for Air Canada. So far this year the airline has launched new services from Toronto to Dubai and Delhi and from Vancouver to Osaka. And in 2016 it will commence flights from Toronto to Seoul.

The new daily Brisbane flights will depart Vancouver at 2345 and arrive in the Queensland city at 0715 two days later, having crossed the International Date Line. The return flights will then depart Brisbane at 1040 and arrive back in Vancouver at 0715 the same day.

Qantas and Solomon Airlines have signed a new codeshare agreement for flights between Australia and Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands.

From 15 November 2015, Qantas passengers will be able travel on Solomon Airlines’ five weekly services from Brisbane and Sydney to Honiara, all of which are operated using the South Pacific carrier’s Airbus A320 aircraft.

“The new codeshare builds on our broader partnership strategy which sees us work closely with other international carriers to increase our presence in growing markets and deliver more for our customers.”

Solomon Airlines’ CEO, Captain Ron Sumsum, added that the arrangement would allow Honiara to be “promoted to more Australians than ever before”.

Two Chinese airlines are planning to launch new direct flights to Australia in the coming month, allowing passengers from more Chinese cities to head Down Under.

In a recent statement posted on its website, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) revealed that both Hainan Airlines and China Eastern Airlines have applied for new routes, all of which will be new city pairs.

Hainan Airlines is seeking permission to launch to Sydney from both Xi’an and Changsha, the respective capitals of China’s Shaanxi and Hunan provinces. Commencing in November 2015, these services will operate twice a week.

China Eastern Airlines meanwhile, has submitted an application to launch three weekly flights from Shanghai to Brisbane on 16 January 2016. The request follows the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) recent approval of the proposed joint venture between Qantas and China Eastern, and Qantas would act as a codeshare partner on the new route.

Both Hainan Airlines and China Eastern plan to deploy their twin-aisle Airbus A330 aircraft on the new routes.

The move follows other recent announcements of Chinese airlines commencing flights to Australia. Xiamen Airlines has already confirmed plans to launch flights to Sydney from both Fuzhou and Xiamen – two cities in southeast China’s Fujian province – in November and December this year respectively. The new flights will be serviced using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

And China Southern Airlines will add extra flights from Guangzhou to Sydney and Brisbane, as well as launching three weekly Dreamliner flights to the New Zealand city of Christchurch in December 2015.

All of which means that by the end of 2015, six Chinese airlines will be operating direct flights to Australia: Air China, China Southern, China Eastern, Hainan Airlines, Sichuan Airlines and Xiamen Airlines.

Qantas has revealed plans to revamp and expand its lounges at Brisbane Airport.

The multi-million dollar project will include the construction of a new “lounge precinct” as part of the expansion of the airport’s domestic terminal. This will include the creation of a new Business Lounge and Chairman’s Lounge for premium passengers, in addition to the redesign of the existing Qantas Club.

Qantas’ existing First and Business Lounges at Brisbane’s International Terminal will also be redesigned and merged into a single lounge experience, similar to recent openings in Singapore and Hong Kong.

“During the past two years we have invested in new lounges, upgrades to our A330 aircraft and rolled out more in-flight entertainment options than ever before,” said Qantas’ group CEO, Alan Joyce.

“Brisbane is a crucial hub providing connections between our major domestic routes and services into regional areas as well as international flights to Los Angeles, Singapore, Hong Kong and as of a few weeks ago, daily flights to Tokyo.”

Work on all of the new lounges will begin before the end of the year, and will be gradually completed through 2016 and early 2017.

Qantas will add more than 140 international flights between December 2015 and February 2016, to cater for strong demand during the upcoming Australian summer holiday season.

In addition to the 15 seasonal services from Sydney to Christchurch and Queenstown, Qantas will add an extra 95 return services to New Zealand during the peak travel season. These include 48 return services between Brisbane and Christchurch and 36 between Brisbane and Wellington from 3 December 2015 to 22 February 2016.

From 30 November 2015 to 21 February 2016, Qantas will also operate a daily service from Perth to Singapore, and a fifth weekly flight will be added to the Sydney-Jakarta route from 7 December 2015 to 10 January 2016.

“A key part of our strategy is listening to and responding to our customers’ needs and developing an agile and flexible network which offers more options during peak periods,” said Stephen Thompson, Qantas’ executive manager for international sales,

“We are really pleased to be able to meet demand for travel between Brisbane and both Wellington and Christchurch with the return of direct services during December and January. It’s with the support of the teams at Brisbane, Christchurch and Wellington airports that these new seasonal services have been made possible.

“Our additional services to Singapore and Jakarta are also good news for customers travelling to destinations across Asia, with the daily frequency between Perth and Singapore over the holidays confirming that our decision to return to this route was the right one,” added Thompson.

Tickets for the new seasonal services are now on sale.

Qantas is preparing to significantly expand its operations in Japan, with the launch of two new routes to Tokyo.

On Friday evening, Qantas flight QF25 will depart Sydney Airport for the first time, bound for Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. This will be followed on Saturday morning by the inaugural departure of QF61 from Brisbane to Tokyo’s Narita Airport.

“This significant capacity expansion has been extremely well received by Qantas customers and especially by corporate travellers heading directly to downtown Tokyo, who can now save up to one and a half hours on their airport commute by flying into or out of Haneda,” said Qantas International’s CEO, Gareth Evans.

“Customers travelling on the new Brisbane-Narita route can explore Tokyo or beyond with popular holiday destinations across Jetstar Japan’s extensive domestic network, like Sapporo, Fukuoka and Osaka.”

Qantas’ Brisbane-Narita flights will be operated daily using a refurbished Airbus A330 aircraft, with flat-bed seats in business class. The Sydney-Haneda service will also run daily, using a Boeing 747-400 aircraft.

The launch of the new daily flights to Tokyo follows Jetstar’s introduction of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the Melbourne-Narita route earlier this month. And the frequency of this service will also increase from four to six flights per week in December-March.

Air Canada will launch a direct service between Vancouver and Brisbane next year, using its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Commencing on 17 June 2016, the route will initially operate three times a week. Flights will depart Vancouver every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 2345, arriving in Brisbane at 0715 two days later (having crossed the International Date Line).

The return services will then leave Brisbane every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 1040, arriving back into Vancouver at 0715 the same day.

“Air Canada continues to strategically expand its international network with the addition of our second Australian destination – Brisbane,” said Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada’s president & CEO. “The new route increases our presence in the Asia Pacific market at a time when trade and travel in the region and between North America is growing, with a further boost expected from the Trans-Pacific Partnership now under negotiation.

Brisbane

“Already, Air Canada commits $2 billion worth of aircraft to the Pacific market each day and Brisbane is the third new Pacific route we have announced in the past year, after TorontoTokyo Haneda and Vancouver-Osaka.”

Rovinsecu added that the route had been made possible by the “operating economics of the Dreamliner”.

Air Canada configures the fuel-efficient B787-8 aircraft with 20 flat-beds in business class, 21 seats in premium economy and 210 in economy class.

This announcement marks the latest stage in Air Canada’s recent expansion. Already this year the national carrier has launched four new international routes, including Montreal-Venice, Montreal-Mexico City, Toronto-Amsterdam and Vancouver-Osaka. New flights from Toronto to Dubai and Delhi will also commence this autumn.

Etihad Airways has launched a new non-stop service to Brisbane using its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The inaugural flight departed Abu Dhabi at 2200 on Monday evening and will touch down in the Australian city at 1750 today, where it will be met by a traditional water cannon salute. The return flight will depart Brisbane at 2135 tonight and will arrive back in Abu Dhabi at 0600 on Wednesday morning.

The new direct route replaces the airline’s previous Brisbane service which operated via Singapore. That switch has been made possible by the deployment of the new fuel-efficient B787-9 aircraft, which offers Etihad newest cabin products including eight first suites, 28 business studios and 199 economy smart seats.  The premium seats recline to form fully flat beds, and passengers in all classes will be offered in-seat power outlets, USB ports, touch-screen in-flight entertainment and Wi-Fi.

“The commencement of daily non-stop Dreamliner services enables us to offer our strongest ever customer proposition on the Brisbane-Abu Dhabi route and represents a significant investment in the Queensland market,” said Etihad’s president & CEO, James Hogan.

“By retiming our Brisbane-Abu Dhabi flights with evening departures in both directions and removing the stop in Singapore, we can now offer guests the convenience of shorter travel times and two-way connectivity to more than 30 destinations in the GCC, Middle East, Africa and Europe.

“From a guest experience perspective, the unique features of the Dreamliner aircraft have enabled us to customise it with the most innovative and sophisticated cabins. Brisbane travellers will be among the first in the world to experience the unparalleled comfort and luxury of this ground-breaking aircraft,” he added.

Etihad now operates 32 weekly flights between Australia and Abu Dhabi, but this will increase to 39 from 1 August 2015 when the airline adds a second daily flight between Abu Dhabi and Melbourne.

Etihad also recently launched its first Airbus A380 flights to Sydney.

Qantas has unveiled a series of new domestic and international services for Queensland.

Following the recent announcement of its new BrisbaneTokyo Narita service, which starts in August 2015, Qantas has now decided to operate the route daily, rather than four times a week as initially promised.

The airline was considering an alternative city from which to operate the remaining three weekly services, but has now opted to use Brisbane for all seven weekly flights.

And the Australian carrier has also unveiled two new domestic routes for Queensland, connecting Melbourne with the Whitsunday Coast and Hamilton Island.

Launching on 25 June 2015, the Melbourne-Whitsunday Coast route will be operated by Jetstar three times a week (Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays). Then on 27 June, Qantas will start flying the Melbourne-Hamilton Island route twice a week (Saturdays and Sundays).

“This is great news for Qantas customers who now have a range of new, direct travel options on our international and domestic network,” said Qantas’ regional manager for Queensland, Peter Collyns. “We’ve worked closely with Brisbane Airport to increase our upcoming Tokyo route to a daily service. This is a big positive for local tourism because it makes Queensland even more accessible to Japanese travellers.

“Qantas customers now have a direct premium service from Melbourne to Hamilton Island, and Jetstar will offer the only low fares between Melbourne and the Whitsunday Coast Airport,” he added.

All Qantas’ Brisbane-Narita flights will be operated using an Airbus A330 aircraft, while the Hamilton Island route will use a Boeing 737. Jetstar will deploy an A320 on the new Whitsunday Coast service.

Hotels in Brisbane saw a surge in occupancy during the recently G20 Summit.

According to data from STR Global, the Australian city achieved occupancy levels of 93.5% during the summit, which was held from 15-16 November 2014. This marks an increase of 10.6% compared to the same period last year.

STR Global noted that Brisbane’s occupancy levels are “naturally high”, largely due to the fact the city only has 13,300 hotel rooms.

And the additional demand caused by the G20 summit also allowed hoteliers to increase rates. Brisbane’s average daily rate (ADR) surged 126.8% during the week of the event (10-16 November 2014), while revenue per available room (revPAR) jumped 150%.

The event also has a positive effect on the hotels in the neighbouring Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, both of which saw higher occupancy and ADR, though at lower growth rates than Brisbane.

During the event week, Brisbane achieved revPAR of AU$402 (US$344), while the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast averaged AU$142.50 and AU$132.70 respectively.

And the impact of Brisbane’s figures was felt even further afield. The summit caused state-wide ADR in Queensland to rise 67% and even led to a 20% increase in Australia’s nationwide average daily rate.

According to the G20 Summit website, approximately 4,000 delegates and 3,000 media representatives attended the G20 summit.

From May to October this year, the national carrier will commence flights to three destinations in Australia – Brisbane, Darwin and Perth – along with new routes to Kuala Lumpur, Guangzhou and Abu Dhabi, the latter marking its return to the Middle East for the first time since 2010.

“Australia, Kuala Lumpur and Guangzhou are major destinations for business and leisure. Abu Dhabi, on the other hand, has a large concentration of OFWs (overseas Filipino workers), making it a prime destination in the Middle East,” explained PAL’s President, Ramon Ang.

The six months of expansion will start on 1 May 2013, with the launch of four weekly flights to Kuala Lumpur. Services will depart Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 0755. Then in June the expansion will gather pace with the launch of three new routes. The four weekly Guangzhou services will depart at 1030 every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, while the new three weekly flights to Brisbane, via Darwin, will leave at 2205 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. PAL will also launch four weekly flights to Perth, also flying via Darwin, with services departing every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday at 2225.

Finally from 1 October 2013, PAL will launch direct daily flights to Abu Dhabi, with services departing Manila at 1625.

The expansion of PAL’s route network marks the latest stage in the national carrier’s recent resurgence. Since securing investment from the San Miguel Corporation in April 2012, the airline has placed orders for 54 new Airbus aircraft, including 10 long-haul jets, deliveries of which are due to start this year.

PAL has identified route expansion, fleet modernisation and in-flight service enhancements as its “three pillars of growth”.

The first new A330 is due to enter service on 2 April 2013, flying between Nadi and Auckland. This will mark the start of new five-times-a-week service to the New Zealand city. Brisbane will be the first Australian city to see the A330, with five weekly flights starting on 21 April. Sydney’s A330 flights start on 8 June, with frequencies on the route rising to twice a day from September 2013 and 17 flights per week during peak season, using a mix of A330s and Boeing 737s. The first Melbourne A330 flight will commence in December, with five weekly flights.

The A330 will also start operating to Hong Kong from 4 April, with twice weekly flights every Thursday and Saturday, replacing the B747 that currently operates the route. A third A330 flight will be added in January 2014.

The US will see its first A330 flight on 1 July, when the airline deploys the aircraft to Los Angeles. The current schedule of four weekly B747 flights will be replaced with a mix of A330 and B747 services until November, following which the A330s will fully take over the route, with daily services.

“The entire Air Pacific team is thrilled about the opportunity to start showing our regular customers and new visitors to Fiji our new state-of-the-art A330s,” said David Pflieger, Air Pacific’s managing director & CEO.” “While our goal has always been to offer our customers the best flying experience in the Pacific, our new planes are going to make a huge difference in our ability to deliver on that promise, and we will be revealing even better service and other surprises when we officially become ‘Fiji Airways’ later this year.”

The move to the new A330s comes as Air Pacific rebrands to Fiji Airways. The new A330s, which will feature the new Fiji Airways livery, will come equipped with 273 seats – 24 in business class and 249 in economy.

By the end of 2013, Air Pacific will have retired its entire fleet of B747s and repainted all of its B737s.

Etihad Airways will commence a new daily service between Abu Dhabi and Brisbane, via Singapore, this week.

From 1 February 2013, the airline will add four weekly services to its existing three flights, resulting in the addition of 1,048 seats to the route. The first flight will be operated using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft painted in the colours of Manchester City FC – the English football team sponsored by Etihad.

“The additional capacity puts Etihad Airways in a stronger than ever position in the Singapore and Australian markets. It enables us to compete on a more level playing field than in the past,” said James Hogan, the airline’s President & CEO.

“The new schedule… offers more to the thousands of business and leisure travellers, particularly from the Middle East, UK, Ireland and Europe, who are heading to Singapore and the state of Queensland in ever increasing numbers,” he added.

Etihad commenced three weekly flights between Brisbane and Singapore in September 2007, and operates the route using its two-class, 262-seat A330-200.

Etihad Airways President and Chief Executive James Hogan (right) with the Premier of Queensland, the Honourable Campbell Newman (left), celebrate with Etihad Airways Brand Ambassador Dannii Minogue at the announcement of daily flights between Brisbane and Abu Dhabi via Singapore

Etihad Airways has announced plans to increase flights between Brisbane and Abu Dhabi from three times a week to a daily service from February 1st, 2013. This will bring to 28 the total number of flights operating between Australia and Abu Dhabi, together with partner airline Virgin Australia.

The additional four services will continue to operate via Singapore in both directions and provide a new daily link between city pairs.

James Hogan, president and chief executive officer of Etihad Airways, said the increase in frequency was a game-changing move for the airline on the Abu Dhabi-Singapore-Australia route. “Going daily to Brisbane and Singapore puts Etihad Airways in a stronger competitive position and will increase the airline’s brand footprint exponentially in these markets.”

“We are now able to offer corporate and leisure travellers a more appealing proposition: more flights, more convenience and a wider choice of destinations in Europe, the Middle East, Gulf Cooperation Countries, and on the Virgin Australia domestic network.”

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman said Etihad’s plan to increase the number of flights was a boost to Queensland’s economy and the tourism industry. “This will see thousands of extra people a year coming into Queensland, injecting millions of dollars into our economy and resulting in more jobs being created,” said Newman.

“More flights into the state opens up opportunities for international travellers to see some of the many wonderful tourist attractions Queensland has to offer.”
