Budapest has been named as the top choice for spending New Year’s Eve 2023 in Europe, according to a new study.   The study by NoDeposit.Guide analyzed various affordability and enjoyability factors in cities across Europe, which culminate to create the best night-out experience to ring in 2024 in style.

The study looked at the average number of the following available in the city, as well as their average visitor ratings: hotels, tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, and pubs and, importantly, the New Year’s Eve events which the city is hosting this year.

In addition to this, the study also took into consideration the average cost of hotel stays, the average meal cost, the price of public transport around the city, and the average cost of domestic and imported beer.

The above factors were all collated to form an index to rank the best cities across Europe to spend your celebrations – providing the top picks for people seeking last-minute getaway inspiration.

#1 Budapest, Hungary

Budapest has taken the top spot as the best destination in Europe to spend NYE this year. The city achieved an overall index ranking of 78.68 out of 100 – ahead of all other cities in the study.

The capital is clearly a great city break choice for anyone who is looking to party this NYE, as, according to the study, Budapest has the highest average bar ratings across Europe. The average rating achieved an index score of 10 out of 10 – equating to 4.54 out of 5 in TripAdvisor reviews across the 159 bars available.

And when it comes to the cost of a night out, Budapest is less likely to break the bank than other European city options, with the average cost of both imported and domestic beer estimated at only $2.86 per pint. The cost of imported beer commanded an index score of 9.94 out of 10 in the study – second only to Sofia, Bulgaria.

#2 Rome, Italy

The study found that ‘when in Rome’, you will be sure to have a memorable New Year’s Eve celebration as the city ranked second on the list of the best European city destinations this year – with an incredible index score of 77.62 out of 100.

Rome achieved a perfect score of 10 out of 10 for the number of hotels available in the city, topping every other city analyzed in the study – and achieved an average of 4.02 stars across the city’s 8,192 hotels on TripAdvisor.

Rome is not short on things to do this New Year’s Eve either – whether you want a trip ideal for socializing or prefer a quieter trip, taking in the city’s breathtaking culture.

The number of bars in the city scored an index rating of 9.46 out of 10, and similarly, the number of attractions attained 9.27 out of 10 – ranking Rome second and third in Europe on these factors, respectively.

#3 Barcelona, Spain

Coming in third in the ranking is Barcelona, which is the only non-capital city making it into the top ten. Beating the country’s capital, Madrid, which placed fifth, Barcelona achieved an overall index ranking of 74.34 out of 100 for its NYE experience.

Another city famous for its nightlife and, as identified by the study, a firm favorite among visitors. The number of bars available in the city scored an impressive 8.28 out of 10 in the index and a further 8.09 out of 10 based on their average TripAdvisor reviews.

Fancy a Spanish beer on your trip? The cost will only set you back an estimated $3.28 per pint in the city – ensuring the costs of your celebrations are kept low.

#4 Paris, France

The City of Love, Paris, has been found to be among the best European cities to celebrate NYE 2023 – achieving an impressive index score of 71.38 out of 100 and placing fourth on the list.

A trip to the French capital will ensure your itinerary is jam-packed, as the study found Paris to be second for the greatest number of attractions and restaurants across the cities in the study (9.73 out of 10 and 9.82 out of 10, respectively).

On New Year’s Eve, the city is set to host 29 public events across the city – scoring an index rating of 9.06 out of 10 and coming second in Europe only to London. Travellers will be spoiled for choice in the city on the big night!

But no need to cut the trip short, as the days after can be filled exploring the 4,646 tourist attractions the city has to offer (as found on TripAdvisor).

#5 Madrid, Spain

The Spanish capital, Madrid, rounds out the top five European cities to spend New Year’s Eve this year – gaining an overall index rating of 70.50 out of 100 in the study.

The study found that visitors would not be short on options for places to eat and drink. Madrid scored impressive index ratings of 8.91 out of 10 and 8.51 out of 10 for the number of restaurants and number of bars available to try.

If that’s not enough to entice you to the Spanish city, the average price of a ticket on public transport is only $1.64 (one-way), as found by the study, meaning your money can go further when exploring the city and all it has to offer.

Budapest leads the ranking of the cheapest European cities for food lovers with an average meal price of $56.04. Notably, its cheap eats at $9.90 are the lowest among the top 10 cities, making it an ideal destination for budget travelers.

While its mid-range meals are comparable to Barcelona’s, its fine dining options are more expensive.Rome secures the 5th position as the cheapest European city for food lovers, with an average meal price of $71.84. It offers a balanced dining experience, with mid-range meals, falling between the cheaper options in Budapest and the more expensive ones in Amsterdam, perfectly balancing affordability and luxury.

Dublin is the 8th cheapest destination for foodies, with an average of $90.90 for dining out. Fine dining prices are the highest among all cities except London and Stockholm. This positions Dublin as a destination for those willing to splurge on gourmet experiences.

Stockholm is 9th on the list of the cheapest European cities for foodies, where meals average at $92.04. With its fine dining prices being the second highest, surpassed only by London, the city caters to those seeking a more expensive dining experience. London rounds off as the most expensive city for dining, with an average meal price of $103.65. Budapest Airport welcomes a significant boost in the Hungarian gateway’s capacity to Hurghada today, with the return of airline partner Air Cairo. The Egyptian low-cost carrier (LCC) has launched a weekly service from Budapest to Egypt’s Red Sea coast – already set to increase to twice-weekly from 29 March 2023 – meaning the airport will see a 173% increase in its capacity to Egypt’s second busiest gateway next summer.

Flown on the carrier’s fleet of 180-seat A320s and 110-seat E190s, the resumption of services in the African market gives Air Cairo an immediate 16% share of weekly seats across all routes in the region. Joining the airport’s existing links to Cairo and Hurghada, the LCC’s new flights will see Budapest offer nearly 40,000 one-way seats to Egypt next year.

Balázs Bogáts, Airline Development Director, Budapest Airport, comments: “After a three-year hiatus, it’s wonderful to see Air Cairo join us again at Budapest with another link to the popular destination of Hurghada. Our latest partner will offer fantastic opportunities for the ever-growing number of Egyptian tourists visiting us every year while also allowing the many Hungarians travelling to Egypt to experience the stunning Red Sea coast.”

The river cruises market is expected to reach USD 1.71 Billion in 2032, likely to surge at a vigorous 2% CAGR during the forecast period of 2022 – 2032. These insights are based on a report on River Cruises Market by Future Market Insights.

River cruises is now a major tourist industry in different parts of the world. In a river cruise, the ship is smaller and carriers fewer people than in an ocean liner. Also, since the river cruiser is smaller, these type of ships can travel in a river and in shallow waters and gives the traveller a chance to explore vibrating cities and laid back towns and villages, and also go in unexplored areas where large ships cannot go.

River cruises as an industry is flourishing in Europe, United States, South East Asia, and Africa. Some popular locations on river cruises include London, Paris, Amsterdam, Budapest, Bangkok, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, New York, San Antonio, Luxor and Cairo.

River Cruises: Drivers and Restraints
Most river cruises give the luxury of unpacking only once and then the traveller is all set to enjoy the sights and sounds of their river cruise. River cruises are relaxing, giving the traveller a reprieve from the fast paced urban life and offer great food and great chances of exploring interesting cities, towns and villages that large ships cannot go to because of size limitations. These are some of the drivers that are boosting the river cruises industry worldwide.

However, the traveller must remember that once in a river cruise, the traveller will have to follow the schedule set by the organisers. If the traveller finds one place more interesting, they cannot stay at that place longer, because the river cruiser has to leave the said port. In addition, some of the river cruises are only meant for adults and they are not meant for children. This limits the adoption of river cruises as a vacation option.

River Cruises: Description
Since river cruise ships tend to be smaller than the ocean cruisers, the travelling experience in river cruisers can be intimate and travelling in some of these cruisers can be really fun. There is no mad rush to get back to the hotel, as the hotel is always a walk away on the river bank. Also, you have to unpack only once, since you don’t need to change your hotel room always when you are in a different city or a town, the ship is always nearby.

However, the traveller must keep in mind that river cruises are a rather subdued affair as compared to life in an ocean liner where you can dine in different restaurants every night or spend the whole night in a casino. In contrast, since the river cruisers are smaller, the experience on board one is far more intimate and relaxed. Also, unlike an ocean cruise, land is always in sight in a river cruise and the traveller isn’t at a risk of getting motion sickness.

The biggest advantage while on a river cruise is that the traveller doesn’t need to plan each and every step of the travel, since once you book a river cruise, everything is taken care of and the traveller just has to follow the schedule of the river cruiser. Also, since the size of the river cruiser is much smaller, the traveller gets to know each and every one in their group as the number of people travelling together is far lesser.

This leads to a first-hand experience to know different travellers from different walks of life and there is an advantage of getting personalised service from the crew of the river cruiser. Due to all these advantages and the lure of an intimate and a laid back holiday, many travellers are getting attracted to river cruises and such cruises are getting more and more popular.

This comprehensive report equips readers with lucid information and analysis on the sector. Future Market Insights’ experienced travel and tourism analysts bring to you accurate and unbiased information to help you make crucial decisions with confidence.

Budapest Airport has announced another momentous re-enhancement in its route network development, with the return of Shanghai Airlines, in partnership with China Eastern Airlines. Relaunching a direct link between Budapest and Shanghai on 11 November, the two cities will initially be connected weekly on Fridays. Operated by the carrier’s fleet of 787-9 Dreamliners, the 8,361-kilometre sector will increase to twice-weekly from 21 December with a third weekly flight expected to be added early next year.

“Shanghai, on China’s central coast, is the country’s biggest city and a global financial hub, so the return of this operation is a significant boost for the Budapest-Asia market, as well as making the region accessible again,” says Balázs Bogáts, Head of Airline Development, Budapest Airport. “Shanghai Airlines joined us in 2019 and witnessed rapid demand in the market, signifying Budapest’s global popularity. We have worked closely with our partners to ensure the demand can once again be met and we aim to surpass expectation for all our visitors, as well as continuing to offer opportunities for our passengers from Hungary to discover the globe.”

Emirates and Gulf Air have officially signed a unilateral codeshare partnership, starting this December. The new agreement will offer easy connections and expanded choices for Gulf Air customers connecting to Dubai and onwards to a host of Emirates destinations across Europe, Africa, South America and the Far East.

The agreement was signed on the first day of the Bahrain Airshow, signalling a growing relationship between both airlines following on the framework of cooperation established last year.  The agreement was signed by Tim Clark, president Emirates Airline and Gulf Air’s chief executive officer Captain Waleed Al Alawi in the presence of Zayed R. Alzayani, Gulf Air’s Chairman of the Board of Directors. The signing ceremony was also attended by members of each airline’s executive management teams.

Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline said: “We are pleased to partner with Gulf Air to offer their customers greater access and strong connection opportunities to unique destinations on our network, complemented by Emirates’ signature in-flight service and hospitality throughout their journey from Dubai.  We look forward to working together and achieving more with Gulf Air in the near future, and further strengthening our relationship.”

Captain Waleed Al Alawi, Gulf Air chief executive officer commented: “Our relationship with Emirates Airline has always been strong and today we are reaching a higher level of collaboration with many more opportunities in the horizon between the two carriers. This partnership will empower both of us to offer a more elevated experience to passengers and widen their travel options.”

The expanded partnership will see Gulf Air place their marketing code “GF” on Emirates operated flights beyond Dubai to a selection of some of the most attractive global tourism hotspots, offering new holiday options for Gulf Air customers. Travellers will be able to connect to points including Budapest, Prague, Warsaw, Algeria, Tunis, Bali, Hanoi, HoChi Minh City, Taipei and Sao Paulo.

The new codeshare agreement’s mix of unique points comes as travellers from the GCC have become more well-informed, value-driven and savvy, increasingly looking for new, diverse experiences and attractions beyond their traditional holiday destinations.

The new partnership will also offer customers the convenience of combined ticketing and check-in, a unified policy and seamless transfers for baggage, and competitive single fares on a multi-airline journey when connecting on Emirates. Customers can book their travel on Gulf Air’s website, through Gulf Air point of sales and online travel agencies as well as with local travel agents.

Emirates currently has codeshare cooperation agreements in place with 26 airline partners and two rail companies around the world, expanding its network reach to over 300 cities.

eDreams ODIGEO, has launched its ‘Year in Travel report, providing an overview of the past year, insight into the year ahead and predictions for 2023. Its report analyses searches and booking data from its customers in all key European markets* and the USA, revealing top destinations, booking habits and the evolution of travel in the year ahead. Opodo, part of the eDreams group, is the best known brand in the UK.

As we reach the end of the year, data pulled from eDreams ODIGEO (which includes Opodo)’s 2022 bookings and search data brings new revelations about our habits over the last twelve months and our dreams for the year ahead.

TOP 2022 DESTINATIONS
For global travellers, London came second to Paris as the most popular booked destination. The highest percentage of visitors to the UK arrived from Spain (18%), compared to 12% from Germany, 11% from Italy and 9% from France (by comparison, just 6% of France’s incoming travellers had set off from the UK).

For British travellers, Dublin was the most popular booked destination again this year, followed by Barcelona, Paris, Malaga and Alicante. Top destinations for Britons were all short-haul, perhaps reflecting the closure of many long-haul borders .

TOP 2022 SEARCHES
London tops the leaderboard when it comes to travel searches from all markets in 2022, followed by Paris, Istanbul, New York City and Barcelona. During 2022 most British travellers took short-haul flights, but we continued to dream of further horizons: our searches for the year highlight Dubai as a perennial favourite, with Istanbul, Bangkok and New York City all making it into the top eight most searched for destinations.

2022 GROWTH DESTINATIONS
In order to investigate which destinations are rising in popularity, eDreams ODIGEO looks at newcomers into the top 50 booked destinations for the year compared to 2021. In 2022 Berlin, Antalya, Brussels, Stockholm and Pisa each made it into British travellers’ top 50 list. 2022 newcomers in the top 50 for all markets globally include Budapest, Copenhagen, Malta, Stockholm and Geneva.

Opodo’s data further reveals that top growth destinations across all markets in 2022 compared to the previous year are Denpasar (+1478% bookings), Singapore (+1446% bookings), Bangkok (+1188% bookings), Phuket (+689% bookings) and Jakarta (+384% bookings) (see Table 3). It is important to bear in mind that these growth figures are atypical in that they reflect a return to travel following the disruptions of previous years.

TOP HOTEL DESTINATIONS
Despite many British travellers queuing to travel overseas, the top destination booked by Brits for hotel stays in 2022 was London. Our next favourite cities for hotel breaks were Istanbul, Dublin, Paris and Barcelona.

 TRAVEL HABITS
Reflecting our pent up appetite to travel – and to stay for a week or more  once there – Opodo’s data reveals that 41% of all bookings globally were for trips lasting seven days or more. A quarter of all bookings were for trips of 7-13 days while a healthy 8% of all bookings were for journeys lasting three weeks or more.

Travellers globally are waiting longer to book, with a whopping 45% of all bookings made relatively last minute: within 2 weeks or less of departure, compared to 36% in 2021 – an increase of 25%. This relatively new habit may have been born of the pandemic, but it shows no current signs of slowing down.

eDreams notes that in 2022 other key habits included increased interest in blending work trips with holidays (Bleisure) and that changing work patterns continued to result in a rise in demand for remote working opportunities (Digital Nomadism).

 TRAVEL IN 2023
Opodo’s search and booking data reveals the stand out destination for travel in 2023 is London. In terms of global bookings it comes second only to Paris, with Barcelona, Bangkok and Madrid making up the top five destinations booked. London is second in global searches also, just behind Bangkok and ahead of Paris, New York City and Tokyo.

Stockholm old town (Gamla Stan) cityscape from City Hall top, Sweden

Key international events planned for 2023 are already driving interest in travel. The UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium on 10 June 2023 is driving global searches upwards by +307% for travel to Istanbul between the 8-12 June 2023 vs the same dates in 2022. In Paris, Roland Garros takes place every year but the 2023 tennis tournament next summer is already generating travel buzz, with global searches to travel to Paris between the 26 May – 12 June 2023 vs  the same dates in 2022 up by +85%.

The Coronation of Charles III in London on 6 May 2023 has also caught the imagination of global travellers with searches for travel to London between 4-8 May 2023 already showing an increase of +143% against the same dates in 2022. The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool on 13 May 2023 is also driving a +569% increase in global searches to travel to Liverpool between 11-15 May 2023 vs the same dates in 2022.

Landscape of Thai’s king palace with goldent guard ship on the front.

Dana Dunne, CEO of eDreams ODIGEO, commentsThe data speaks for itself, consumers are embracing the opportunity to travel whenever they can. Our bookings data shows short breaks are currently the most prominent, revealing that consumers are looking to squeeze in holidays wherever possible, with almost a third of trips lasting for just three-four days. This trend could also be representative of more flexible work patterns, enabling travellers to bring their laptops with them and work abroad whilst enjoying a long weekend in a new, exciting environment.

“This is reflected in the most booked destinations, with a range of European destinations such as Budapest, Copenhagen and Malta pushing some of the more traditional European holiday destinations out of the top ten.“Our findings also reveal that travellers have been spontaneous with their bookings, with nearly half (45%) taking place just 15 days before departure, or less. This underpins consumers’ desire to seize the day after being restricted on their travel plans for so long.

Spectators at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix will be able to learn more about driving holidays in Thailand.

This is because the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has decided to use the Formula One event to target the Eastern European market, especially those considering self-drive vacations.

The “Amazing Thailand Pit Stop” will be on display at the Hungaroring, near Budapest, from 28-30 July. This follows similar initiatives undertaken at other global Grands Prix, most recently last year at Suzuka in Japan.

“This will be our fourth venture into the F1 community of fans, as TAT has already been associated with the Monaco, Australian and Japanese races. We are happy to announce our participation inside the exclusive confines of the Hungarian F1 Village and show off the charms of the kingdom,” said Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, the TAT’s deputy governor for marketing communications.

“As much as Thailand has a world-class airline, train and bus networks that reaches into every corner of the kingdom, we’re encouraging visitors to consider self-drive holidays that enable our guests to stop along the way and take in the local culture, food and the natural Thai hospitality that is pervasive throughout Thailand,” Chattan added.

One key attraction that the TAT will be displaying in Hungary is an authentic Thai tuk-tuk, which was driven from Bangkok to Prague by young Czech adventurer, Martin Méchura. The TAT said it was targeting the Hungarian Grand Prix as it attracts visitors not only from Hungary, but also from the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia and Austria.

“The Amazing Thailand Pit Stop has always been a crowd pleaser wherever we take the concept, and this year with the tuk-tuk, it will be a photographic and conversation focal-point for the 160,000 fans of F1 in attendance,” Chattan concluded.

South Korea’s Asiana Airlines will launch its first flights to Budapest this summer.

Commencing on 1 July 2016, the new charter service will operate direct from Seoul’s Incheon Airport to the Hungarian capital, using 262-seat Boeing 777-200 aircraft.

Asiana will become the only airline in the world operate the Seoul-Budapest route.

“We have worked extremely hard alongside the Foreign Ministry and the Hungarian National Tourism Office to secure this exciting new charter flight with Asiana Airlines,” said Jost Lammers, CEO of Budapest Airport.

“The launch of Air China’s service to Beijing last year saw the first point in Asia to be served directly from Budapest since 2012, and the confirmation of Asiana’s link to Korea reinforces the huge need of further connections to the East. I fully believe that this announcement is the first step in securing further capacity to Korea in the coming seasons.”

Asiana currently operates scheduled flights to European destinations including Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, London and Istanbul, plus several cities in Russia.

A rise in the number of people visiting the Hungarian capital of Budapest has helped the city’s hotel sector become one of the fastest growing in Eastern Europe, according to a new report by global hotel consultancy HVS London.

Hotels in Budapest recorded strong growth in 2014 with room occupancy up 5% and average rates up 8% in local currency, helped by a 13.5% hike in arrivals over the past three years.

Performance figures for 2015 look set to be even stronger, with some hotels reporting a 30% average rate growth, with occupancy up 10-15 percentage points in the year-to-October 2015.

“With continual increases in visitation to Budapest and demand for hotel nights rising, hotel performance has been consistently improving since 2012,” commented report co-author Constance Biria, consulting & valuation analyst, HVS London.

“The recent boost in hotel performance has also translated into an increase in values per room. The current outlook for Budapest predicts further improvement in performance, increased investment and a further rise in room values,” she added.

According to the HVS European Hotel Valuation Index hotels in Budapest had an average room value of €149,404 at the end of 2014. This represents a 7.5% increase on 2013 making it one of the top 10 strongest markets in Europe and one of the fastest growing in Eastern Europe.

Transactions in Budapest’s hotel sector are still relatively scarce, however, with only four transactions recorded since 2012, largely due to the political conditions in 2012 and the global financial crisis. Likewise, despite the fact Budapest is one of the largest cities in Europe and visitation is rising, hotel developments are relatively slow, with only three currently in the pipeline.

“Many of Budapest’s 241 hotels are also due major renovations,” added report co-author Arlett Hoff, director, HVS London.

“The completion of these upgrades will help boost average rates and the appeal of the market to investors as will the completion of major improvements to its transport infrastructure.”

A new Post Office Travel Money Cost of Culture report has revealed that Dublin is the city where culture costs the least.

Dublin, Ireland.
Dublin, Ireland.

The Irish capital was found to be much cheaper than Warsaw, Budapest and Prague, the Eastern European cities that set the pace for a culture-cramming break a year ago.

Based on six cultural attractions – visits to Ireland’s National Museum, National Gallery and Trinity College to see the Old Library and Book of Kells as well as ballet, opera and musical nights out – Dublin’s cultural barometer basket weighed in at just over £76, more than 25 per cent cheaper than a year ago.

Not only does this make the city the best value of 17 cultural capitals surveyed by the Post Office but also less than half the price of 10 competitors, including London.

Dublin’s six cultural highlights cost less than one ticket in London for The Barber of Seville (£115, London Coliseum) or Romeo & Juliet (£115, Royal Opera House).

London remains Europe’s most expensive city for culture after registering a 12.5 per cent rise in the Cost of Culture basket to £287.50 compared with last year.

Paris is almost as expensive at £247.64 but prices in both cities are far lower than in New York, where transatlantic travellers can expect to pay £491.73.

In New York a category 2 ticket for the Metropolitan Opera (Otello) will set UK visitors back £212 while the New York City Ballet (Balanchine) costs over £177.

Budapest has retained its position as second cheapest in the survey at £91.31 for the six cultural highlights, although prices are up 13.6 per cent compared with a year ago.

For holidaymakers who prefer the idea of mixing sunshine with a city break, Lisbon looks to be best value.

The Portuguese capital scored with the third cheapest barometer cost of £94.41.

Despite the increased value of sterling, which gives UK visitors 13 per cent more Polish zloty for their pounds, Warsaw, last year’s best bargain, has fallen to fourth place because performance prices have mushroomed 51 per cent to £105.10 in 12 months.  Fifth-placed Prague has seen a 20 per cent increase to £111.52.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money said: “Last year we were advising holidaymakers to head east to Warsaw, Budapest and Prague for the lowest-priced highbrow break. Now Dublin has leapfrogged all three and looks a great bargain, especially as flights to the Irish capital are shorter and such good value too.”

However, the Post Office points out that the price you pay will depend on your taste in culture. For example, entry to the most popular museum, gallery and heritage site is free in Copenhagen, which is 10th placed in the overall barometer at a total price of £154.20, but these attractions cost over £35 in Amsterdam. And while there is free entry to the British Museum and National Gallery in London, the Tower of London rated as the most expensive heritage site at £24.50 – over twice the price of every other site surveyed.

The report found that the cheapest European cities for ballet, opera and music events cost a sixth of those in the most expensive cities.

A ticket for Lisbon’s National Ballet Company (Pedro e Ines) will cost £18.16 compared with £115 for the Royal Ballet’s Romeo & Juliet in London.

Similarly, holidaymakers will pay £21.34 a ticket for the Polish National Opera’s production of the Merchant of Venice compared with around £130 for Madam Butterfly at the Paris Opera.

In Budapest a programme of Strauss by the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra costs £10.47 but a Warsaw National Philharmonic classical concert is £52.10.

Air China has unveiled plans to launch flights to two new destinations in Eastern Europe.

On 1 May 2015, the airline will commence a new route from Beijing to Budapest, via Minsk. The service will mark the only direct route between China and Belarus, and the first connection from Beijing to Hungary.

Operating four times a week, the new Beijing-Minsk-Budapest route will depart the Chinese capital every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 1300, arriving in the Belarusian capital Minsk at 1650, it will then continue on to Hungary’s capital Budapest, where it will arrive at 1820.

The return flights depart Budapest at 1900 and arrive in Beijing at 1150 the following day.

Beijing will serve the route using a 237-seat, two-class Airbus A330-200 aircraft, featuring flat-bed seats in business class.

“With increasing exchanges between China and Europe in recent years, the market demand for air transportation has been growing rapidly,” Air China said in a statement. “2015 marks the 66th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between

China and Hungary…, [and] Hungary has become one of the most important destinations for Chinese tourists to Eastern Europe.”
The addition of Minsk and Budapest will take Air China’s total number of European destinations to 18.

One of Air India’s new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Budapest on Thursday evening, due to a technical problem.

The aircraft was flying from London to Mumbai when it reported an engine fault, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

The Dreamliner was actually flying over Serbian airspace at the time of the incident, but pilots made the decision to double back and land in Hungary’s capital, Budapest.

The aircraft was unable to continue its journey, so Air India re-routed two other flights, from Paris and Frankfurt to Delhi, to Budapest. One of the aircraft was used to carry all passengers from the two Delhi-bound flights to the Indian capital, while the other picked up the stranded Mumbai-bound passengers.

The exact nature and severity of the Dreamliner fault is unclear, but the aircraft is believed to remain in Budapest.

Cities in Eastern Europe will be the cheapest Christmas market breaks this winter, according to a new Post Office report.

Budapest has beaten last year’s cheapest city Tallinn to be the best buy in winter 2013 when adding up the cost of two evening meals with wine, coffee, drinks, snacks, two hotel nights, return travel and transfers. Prices have dropped 8.8% in Hungary’s Budapest to amount to GBP529.55, while Latvia’s capital Riga came out second cheapest at GBP530.02.

“Sterling is up to five per cent weaker than a year ago against European currencies so it is doubly important for people to shop around for the best currency deals and factor in all the costs they will incur on a Christmas Markets trip,” said the Pots Office Travel Money’s Andrew Brown.

Lille came out the third cheapest and with the lowest total in western Europe at GBP704.04, followed by Brussels and Trento, Italy.

Cities in eastern Europe are still the cheapest for British tourists to visit while Lisbon tops those in the euro, a new Post Office report has found.

Its City Costs Barometer saw Budapest’s forint currency trump Riga and Prague as the cheapest city when pricing up the total of 12 typical holiday items such as a meal, local transport and sightseeing. The total cost for Budapest sat at GBP134.76,  less than a third of the most expensive cities of Stockholm (GBP420.36) and Copenhagen (GBP440.45).

However of the 25 cities surveyed prices had increased in 22 of them, with Stockholm seeing the biggest rise by 33%, followed by Riga (+30.7%), Boston (+28.4%) and Vienna (+26.3%). Costs dropped in Berlin, Prague and Lisbon, while of the cities using the euro Amsterdam and Rome were the priciest.

The Post Office named Dubrovnik as an emerging city break destination for Brits alongside Moscow, Krakow and Abu Dhabi although New York, Sydney and Rio de Janeiro topped the dream list. Domestically Belfast was the cheapest UK city to visit.

“Rising prices in most of the cities we surveyed, combined with the falling value of sterling, make it more important than ever to check prices for key items like meals, drinks and sightseeing before booking as these are costs that most city break tourists cannot avoid,” said Andrew Brown from Post Office Travel Money.

“There are big price variations across Europe – not just in the eurozone. This means UK holidaymakers can make their pounds stretch further by choosing a cheaper capital like Lisbon or Budapest and it seems that many people are doing just that as Post Office sales of Hungarian forint have surged by 141% in the year to date, compared with 2012,” he added.
