Travelex, a market foreign exchange brand, announces results for the third quarter of 2022, with a positive EBITDA and strong revenue growth underlining the company’s successful turnaround following the Covid-19 pandemic and company restructuring.

In Q3 2022, the New Travelex Group generated revenues of £129.6 (approx. USD 159.30) million, £79.7(approx. USD 97.96) million higher than 2021 and 83% of 2019. Recovery vs. 2019 continues to improve with YTD now only 25% behind 2019 (compared to 30% at the end of Q2). The Group produced a positive underlying EBITDA of £17.2(approx. USD21.15) million in Q3, continuing the trend of a return to positive underlying EBITDA from Q2. Q3 was £24.3(approx. USD 29.89) million favourable to 2021 and only £3.1(approx. USD3.81) million behind 2019.

The figures follow the company’s announcement of 1,200 new international jobs being created and a series of major new contract wins and renewals across the APAC, Europe, MET, Brazil and UK regions earlier this year. These wins and renewals include the launch of a full range of bureaux and ATM services at London Stansted Airport, the UK’s fourth largest airport, signed contract renewals with two leading UK supermarkets, and new stores or contracts at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Frankfurt, Cologne, Zurich, Dubai, Hamad International, Singapore Changi and Kuala Lumpur airports, amongst others.

Over the last twelve months the company has also been heavily investing in new digital solutions to help diversify customers’ access to international money. This includes the launch of two new concept stores at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol featuring a hybrid self-service/manned ‘open bureau’ layout. In August 2022 Travelex launched the Foreign Exchange industry’s first ever ATM click & collect service at Heathrow Terminal 5 and Brisbane Airport, enabling customers to pre-order currency online at Travelex’s best possible rate before collecting it contact free from an airport ATM.

Travelex’s figures also come amid a strong recovery for the air travel industry, with the latest IATA passenger data for September 2022 shows that international air traffic was up 122.2% versus September 2021. International air traffic is now at 69.9% of September 2019 levels.

Richard Wazacz, Travelex CEO, said: “We are delighted to be back on a firmer financial footing, and our positive Q3 results are testament to the hard work of every member of the Travelex team – all of whom have helped drive the company forward through challenging conditions in recent times. “With travel returning and Travelex hiring more than 1,200 jobs worldwide, coupled with our increasing investment into new digital solutions, we are both optimistic for the future of the business and hugely excited to serve our customers in new ways.”

Philippine Airlines will launch direct flights to New Zealand later this year, reducing the current travelling time between Manila and Auckland by more than two hours.

The national carrier currently operates the route via Cairns. But from 6 December 2017, PAL will commence thrice weekly non-stop services between the Philippine capital and New Zealand’s largest city. Services will depart Manila every Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday at 2315 and arrive in Auckland at 1405 the following day.

The return flights then take off from Auckland every Friday, Saturday and Tuesday at 0030 and land back in Manila at 0545.

The new non-stop service will take approximately 10 hours, compared to the 12 hours 15 minutes it currently takes to operate the route via Cairns. In addition, PAL will deploy its 254-seat Airbus A340 on the route, increasing seat capacity by 63% compared to the 156-seat Airbus A321 that it currently operates to Auckland.

The introduction of Manila-Auckland flights will lead to the suspension of PAL’s Cairns service. Passengers with confirmed tickets for Cairns following the suspension will be able to re-route to Darwin, Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney and connect to Cairns via another airline.

Australia’s tropical north could be in line for a significant tourism boost, following the announcement that China Southern Airlines will operate direct flights from Guangzhou to Cairns.

Xinhua reported the airline as saying on Monday that it would launch three weekly flights to the Queensland city “before the end of 2017”.

And Queensland State Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she expects the new flights to bring significant gains to the region’s tourism sector.

“In the first year we expect these flights to bring more than 33,000 Chinese visitors to tropical north Queensland, which in turn flows on to the local economy and supports jobs across the region,” Ms Palaszczuk was quoted saying.

“In fact the tens of thousands of new Chinese tourists coming into Cairns are forecast to be worth more than 30 million dollars in overnight visitor expenditure in our region in the first year alone.”

Asia’s biggest airline in terms of passenger traffic, China Southern has previously operated seasonal flights to Cairns, alongside with its year-round services to Brisbane. Cairns also has direct links to Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Airlines.

Cathay Pacific will increase the frequency of its flights to key destinations on three continents later this year.

In North America, the airline’s Hong Kong-San Francisco route will increase from 17 to 21 flights per week, or three per day, from the end of October 2017. These additional services will be operated by an Airbus A350, making San Francisco the first US city to welcome Cathay’s newest long-haul jet.

Flights to Los Angeles however, will be reduced from four to three per day.

In Australia, Cathay will replace its current four weekly services to Brisbane via Cairns with new direct flights to both cities. The switch means that from October 2017 to March 2018, the airline will operate 11 flights direct from Hong Kong to Brisbane and three weekly non-stop services to Cairns. Brisbane’s existing daily flight will also be served by the A350.

This follows the recent announcement that Cathay will increase capacity on its Sydney route from late October.
Cathay Pacific will also expand its European network this winter, moving from four to five weekly flights on the Madrid route, adding a sixth weekly flight to Manchester, and resuming its 11th weekly service to Paris.

“Our network enhancements are designed to improve our customers’ experience through greater choice and added convenience. Increasing frequencies to these popular Cathay Pacific destinations strengthens our ability to connect our passengers with all corners of the world in addition to growing our home hub of Hong Kong,” said Paul Loo, Cathay’s director of corporate development & IT.

Cathay currently operates 108 weekly flights to North America, 93 to Europe and 75 to Australia. The airline will also launch new services to Tel Aviv, Barcelona and Christchurch later this year.

To celebrate the launch of this new route, Hong Kong Airlines held celebration events at HKIA and Gold Coast Airport. All passengers were presented with a commemorative certificate and boarding pass envelope to mark the occasion. And on arrival in the Gold Coast Airport, the inaugural flight received a traditional water cannon salute.

“We are delighted with the successful launch of this much-anticipated new Australian route,” said Li Dianchun, commercial director of Hong Kong Airlines. “So far, we have received an overwhelming response among travellers since tickets became available for purchase.

“We expect Australia will become a popular destination with our travellers who would like to enjoy the beautiful weather, stunning coastline and exciting activities that the Gold Coast and Cairns have to offer, further strengthening the cultural, tourism and business ties between these two countries,” he added.

Hong Kong Airlines’ route map now covers 30 major cities across the Asia Pacific region, and next month the airline will launch a new service to Cambodia. The three weekly direct flights between Hong Kong and Phnom Penh will kick off on 27 February 2016.

Two significant air routes are launching this week, connecting New Zealand with Southeast Asia and South America.

Last night, Air New Zealand’s inaugural flight to Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires departed from Auckland, marking the start of a new thrice weekly service. And this evening, Philippine Airlines will launch its first flights to New Zealand, connecting Manila with Auckland, via Cairns.

Air New Zealand’s Buenos Aires route marks the first direct scheduled service linking New Zealand and South America. The route will be operated using a Boeing 777-200 aircraft which features the airline’s latest cabin products, including flat-bed seats in business class, premium economy seats, and the SkyCouch concept in economy class.

The airline’s CEO, Christopher Luxon, said the new route would “stimulate two way tourism and trade” between New Zealand and Argentina.

“Sales for the first few months have exceeded our expectations with a healthy spread of bookings originating in New Zealand, Australia and Argentina. A significant portion of the forward bookings heading to South America are from Australia, and this has been pleasing as it was a key part of the business case for this route,” Luxon commented.

Philippine Airlines’ first ever New Zealand service will depart Manila four times a week, and make a short stop in Cairns before arriving in Auckland the next day. The route will be served using a 156-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.

“The route will stimulate passenger traffic along three travel streams – Manila-Cairns, Manila-Auckland as well as Cairns-Auckland,” said PAL’s president, Jaime J. Bautista. “Filipinos residing in New Zealand will find the new service as their convenient link to their home country.”

Cairns and Auckland will become PAL’s 37th and 38th international destinations, and on 18 December the airline will launch a brand new route to Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea.

The new route marks PAL’s first foray into New Zealand, which is home to more than 44,000 Filipinos.

The new service was announced on Friday in a ceremony at Gold Coast Airport.

Jetstar will expand its operations in Bali next year, with the launch of a new direct service to the island from Cairns.

Commencing on 31 March 2015, the Australian low-cost carrier will operate three weekly flights on the Cairns-Bali route, every Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

“We’re always looking to open up new travel opportunities for our customers and I’m delighted that we’re the first low fares carrier to offer direct flights from Cairns to Bali,” said Jetstar’s CEO for Australia & New Zealand, David Hall.

“Bali is one of Australia’s favourite overseas holiday destinations and I’m sure our direct low fares flights will appeal to families and groups of friends looking for a relaxing beach getaway.”

Cairns-Bali is one of three new routes being launched by Jetstar next March, along with a brand new service linking Melbourne with Wellington, and the resumption of flights between the Gold Coast and Perth.

“I’m really pleased that we’re bringing low fares to the Melbourne-Wellington route for the first time,” Mr Hall added. “I have no doubt our flights will help stimulate growth for both tourism markets as we entice new travellers to take up the opportunity of a short break across the Tasman.”

The new three new routes will add up to 4,500 extra weekly seats to Jetstar’s network.

China Southern Airlines touched down in Cairns for the first time today (30 January 2013), marking the start of a new seasonal, scheduled service to the city.

From now until the end of February 2013, Guangzhou-based China Southern will operate three weekly flights to the north Queensland hub, via Brisbane. In total, China Southern will operate to five Australian cities next month, including two charter services between Guangzhou and Adelaide over the Chinese New Year period.

“This is a very proud day for China Southern Airlines as our inaugural scheduled service to Cairns arrives and we open up a new direct link between far north Queensland and southern China,” said China Southern’s Regional General Manager for Australia & New Zealand, Henry He.

“We know Chinese tourists want to travel to great Australian destinations like Cairns and are pleased to be able to offer a way to do this during the summer travel peak. We’re on track to offer 55 scheduled weekly flights to Australia and New Zealand by the end of 2015,” He added.

China Southern is the largest carrier Chinese airline in Australia, carrying more than 385,700 passengers to and from the country in 2012.
