Western China will get two new connections to New York this winter, as Hainan Airlines continues to expand its trans-Pacific network.

On 20 October 2017, the Chinese carrier will launch non-stop services between Chongqing and New York’s JFK Airport. Operating twice a week, this long-haul route will mark the first direct link between Western China and the Big Apple. Then on 26 October 2017, Hainan Airlines will start flying twice a week between Chengdu and JFK.

Both of these routes will be operated using a fuel-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which enables airline’s to operate ultra-long-haul routes in a cost-effective manner.

Hainan Airlines has, to date, launched 12 direct routes from mainland China to eight destinations in North America. These include services from both Chongqing and Chengdu to Los Angeles. The launch of the New York flights will give Hainan Airlines the most routes between the US and China of any Chinese carrier.

The new routes will connect some of the world’s most populous cities, with New York City’s total of approximately eight million residents dwarfed by the 14 million who live in Chengdu and the staggering 38 million who reside in the Chongqing Municipality.

The skies above China are set to become even busier in future, as the fast-expanding HNA Group prepares to launch yet another airline.

One of the group’s existing carriers, Kunming-based Lucky Air, is planning to establish a new subsidiary in Chengdu, the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan province.

Shennaio Airlines (literally meaning “sacred bird”) will be a joint venture between Lucky Air and local investors, with HNA’s carrier investing CNY1.05 billion (approx. US$152 million) for a 35% stake in the airline.

Initially based at Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport, although potentially moving to the city’s new airport when it opens, Shenniao Airlines plans to offer both domestic and international passengers services. Like its parent company Lucky Air, the new carrier will operate under a low-cost model.

If the carrier’s application for an operating license is approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), Shenniao Airlines will become the ninth carrier with an operating base in Chengdu, following Air China, Tibet Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Lucky Air, Sichuan Airlines and Chengdu Airlines.

HNA Group, which also operates Hainan Airlines, is developing a widespread portfolio of air carriers all across China. The conglomerate most recently launched Air Guilin in southwest China’s Guangxi region and Air Changan in Xi’an. It has also formed Fuzhou Airlines, GX Airlines, Urumqi Air and Yangtze River Airlines – a new passenger carrier based in Shanghai – in addition to its established existing units such as Hainan Airlines, Lucky Air, Hong Kong Airlines, Tianjin Airlines, Beijing Capital Airlines and Chongqing’s West Air.

Sichuan Airlines is planning to launch flights to Los Angeles in the coming months, marking the Chinese airline’s debut in the US mainland.

At present, Chengdu-based Sichuan Airlines flies to the US overseas territory of Saipan, and operates trans-Pacific services to the Canadian city of Vancouver. But it has now applied to the US Department of Transportation for permission to fly between Chengdu and LA.

If approved, flights would commence in September 2016 and would operate four times a week. The Monday and Thursday departures will operate via Hangzhou, while the Tuesday and Saturday flights will stop in Jinan.

Sichuan Airlines plans to deploy a two-class 245-seat Airbus A330 aircraft on the route.

This will mark the third new connection between Chengdu and California launched in recent years, following United Airlines’ direct flights from San Francisco and China Eastern Airlines’ Chengdu-Nanjing-LA route.

Construction work started on Chengdu’s new international airport on Friday 27 May.

Located near the town of Lujia, 50km from downtown Chengdu, the new Tianfu International Airport will include a 600,000m² terminal and more than 200 aircraft parking stands.

The first phase of the project is expected to take four years to complete. A second phase, to be completed by 2025, will increase the new airport’s capacity to 40 million passengers and 320,000 aircraft movements per year.

Four Chinese carriers, namely Sichuan Airlines, Air China, China Eastern Airlines and Lucky Air, will operate out of the new airport when it opens by the end of 2019.

Tianfu International Airport is being developed to solve the capacity crunch at Chengdu’s existing airport, Shuangliu International. This will make Sichuan’s provincial capital only the third city in China to have two airports, following Shanghai and Beijing.

Air China intends to launch the first direct service between Sydney and Chengdu next year.

The airline has applied to Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) for permission to operate the new route, which would mark the latest in a series Chinese links for Sydney.

Last month, Xiamen Airlines launched new flights from Xiamen and Fuzhou to Sydney, this week Hainan Airlines will start flying from Xi’an to the Australian city, and next month China Southern Airlines will link Sydney with Shenzhen.

But Air China’s planned service from Sichuan’s capital, Chengdu, would mark the first direct link to Sydney from southwest China. Sichuan Airlines however, already flies direct from Chengdu to Melbourne.

If approved, flights will get underway in June 2016 and will operate daily using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

Air China has established the Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport as a regional hub, and already flies direct from the city to destinations including Frankfurt, Paris, Singapore, Colombo and Tokyo.

World Routes, the global aviation forum, will be held in Chengdu next year.

The baton was handed to the Chinese city at the end of this year’s event in Durban.

The move to Chengdu will put the global air connectivity conference in the heart of one of the fastest growing aviation hubs in the world; air capacity from the city’s Shuangliu International Airport has risen 24.5% in the past three years, with airlines including BA, Qatar Airways and AirAsia all launching flights to Chengdu.

“Hosting World Routes in Chengdu gives us the opportunity to demonstrate, on a global stage, our success in building a national-level aviation hub serving international and domestic airlines,” said Huang Ping, Minister of Chengdu Municipal Government.

“New routes to coastal China, as well as the rest of the world, means Chengdu is now firmly established as Western China’s centre of commerce. In addition to advancing transport, technology, manufacturing and finance sectors, Chengdu also has some of the richest tourism resources in the world. We look forward to welcoming delegates and guests to World Routes next year to experience Chengdu’s history, culture and renowned Sichuan cuisine.”

The hosting of World Routes will come just four years after Chengdu held the Routes Asia event in 2012.

The Canadian government has added five more Chinese airports to its China Transit Program (CTP), which enables Chinese travellers to connect to the US via Canada, without the need for a Canadian visa.

The airports in Xiamen, Fuzhou, Chengdu, Shenyang and Harbin have now been added to the list, taking the total number of airports in the CTP to 14. Beijing, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai Pudong, Manila, Taipei Taoyuan, Tokyo Narita, Tokyo Haneda and Seoul Incheon are already involved in the scheme.

The CTP’s expansion was welcomed by the Canadian Airports Council (CAC).

“Expansion of visa-free travel to more cities in Asia is good not only for Canada’s international hub airports but also for the wider airports community that can benefit from increased connectivity to new destinations,” said Daniel-Robert Gooch, president of the CAC.

“China is an extremely important aviation market for Canada. We urge further expansion of CTP to more countries and carriers in Asia with the eventual goal of Transit Without Visa (TWOV) for the international-to-international traveller segment.”

The scheme is applicable Chinese and US passport holders travelling on flights with 10 approved airlines, including Air Canada, Air China, Cathay Pacific, China Southern Airlines and Philippine Airlines, transiting through Toronto or Vancouver airports.

China Eastern Airlines has launched a new service connecting Los Angeles with two Chinese cities: Chengdu and Nanjing – the respective capitals of Sichuan and Jiangsu provinces.

The new trans-Pacific route commenced on 30 June 2015 and will now operate three times a week.

Services will depart Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 0930. Following a stop in Nanjing, the flights will arrive at Los Angeles International Airport at 1100 the same day, having crossed the International Date Line. The return flights will then leave LA at 1330 and arrive back into Chengdu at 2150 the next day, also with a stop in Nanjing.

China Eastern will deploy a two-class, 234-seat Airbus A330-200 jet on the route, configured with 30 flat-bed seats in business class and 204 seats in economy.

Shanghai-based China Eastern becomes the first carrier to link Chengdu and Nanjing with LA.

The new route follows the recent launch of another new route linking southwest and eastern China with North America; last week, China Eastern started operating three weekly flights between Kunming and Vancouver, via Shanghai.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has confirmed plans to build a second airport to serve Chengdu, the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan province.

Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport is currently the fifth busiest hub in China, handling 37.5 million passengers in 2014.

It is also becoming an increasingly important international gateway, with Lufthansa, BA, KLM, Etihad and Qatar Airways among the airlines that currently fly to Chengdu. Traffic is expected to surge to 62m annual passengers by 2020, exceeding Shuangliu’s current capacity of 50m.

To take the strain off the 59 year-old airport, Xinhua reported the CAAC as saying that work on a brand new facility will commence by the end of this year, at a site in Jianyang, 50km southeast of Chengdu.

Costing approximately CNY69.2 billion (US$11.3bn) to build, the new airport will have three runways, a 600,000m² passenger terminal and 157 aircraft stands. It is expected to handle up to 40m passengers per year by 2025.

Chengdu will become only the third Chinese city to have two airports, following Shanghai and Beijing.

Chinese low-cost carrier Spring Airlines will launch a series of new services to Bangkok next month.

The airline currently connects the Thai capital with its home base of Shanghai, but from May 2015, Spring plans to launch a series of new services from regional cities across China.

New flights will operate to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport from Chengdu, Nanchang and Shijiazhuang, the respective capitals of China’s Sichuan, Jiangxi and Hebei provinces. Flights from Chengdu and Shijiazhuang will operate three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays), while the Nanchang-Bangkok service will run four times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays).

Spring will become the first airline to link Bangkok with Shijiazhuang and the third to operate the Suvarnabhumi-Chengdu route, following China Eastern Airlines and Thai Airways. Spring will also compete with China Eastern on the Nanchang-Bangkok route.

These new services mark the latest expansion of air services from regional Chinese cities to Thailand. Capitalising on a recent surge in the popularity of travel to Thailand among mainland Chinese, airlines including Lucky Air and Okay Airways have recently commenced flights to the country, while established airlines like China Eastern and China Southern Airlines have added more connections from second tier Chinese cities.

Mainland China is now Thailand’s largest visitor source market.

Meanwhile, Spring Airlines has also applied to China’s aviation authorities to launch new scheduled services to the Japanese city of Nagoya, from Hefei, Harbin, Hohhot, Shijiazhuang and Shanghai. If approved, the new routes would start in June 2015.

Spring operates all its routes using a modern fleet of 180-seat, all-economy class Airbus A320 aircraft.

Operated by Sichuan Airlines, the new scheduled service will fly from Chengdu, in southwest China’s Sichuan province, to Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, with a stop in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet.

The new route will commence in January 2015, operating daily using a two-class, 132-seat Airbus A319 aircraft. The departure and arrival times will be announced at a later date.

Airbus says its single-aisle A320-series, which includes the smaller A319, are suited to high altitude airports due to its “exceptional take-off and climb characteristics”.

More than 113,000 Chinese people visited Nepal in 2013, making it the mountainous nation’s second largest tourism source market, behind India. China and Nepal also recently revised their bilateral Air Service Agreement (ASA) to provide 70 weekly flights between the two counties by 2016, up from current 35 flights.

Currently Air China operates 10 weekly flights between Chengdu and Kathmandu, include daily direct services.

British Airways has launched its Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the route between London and Chengdu.

The new aircraft touched down at the Sichuan capital’s Shuangliu International Airport for the first time on 6 May 2014, replacing the B777 that previously operated the route. And the UK national carrier has also now increased the frequency of its Chengdu flights from three to five flights per week.

Keith Williams, BA’s executive chairman travelled onboard the first Dreamliner flight.

“I am very pleased to be able to deliver on our promise to our customers in Chengdu with the arrival of our new Boeing 787 Dreamliner today. Chengdu is one of the first destinations on our global network to be served by the new aircraft,” said Williams.

“The Dreamliner… sets new standards for environmental performance and operating efficiency, and I’m sure our customers in Chengdu will love it.”

The arrival of the B787 was marked by a performance by British opera singer, Katherine Jenkins, who entertained the crowds in Chengdu from the steps of the aircraft.

BA’s B787-8 Dreamliner comes equipped with 214 seats in a three-cabin layout, with 35 seats in business class, 25 in premium economy and 154 in economy.

The airline first launched its Chengdu route in September last year, marking its third destination in mainland China following Beijing and Shanghai.

Etihad Airways will increase the frequency of its Abu Dhabi-Chengdu service from five flights per week to daily later this month.

The airline launched flights to the capital of southwest China’s Sichuan province on 15 December 2011, marking the first connection between Chengdu and the UAE. And Etihad revealed that passenger traffic on the route surged 25% last year compared to 2012 levels, prompting the frequency increase.

From 30 March 2014, the airline will offer daily direct flights to Chengdu, using its two-class, 262-seat Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

“With consistent double-digit growth in passenger and cargo volumes, Chengdu represents a great opportunity,” said James Hogan, Etihad’s president & CEO.

“Operating a daily service will provide our guests with even more convenient service to Abu Dhabi as well as key markets in the GCC, Middle East, North Africa and Europe. In addition, our expanded service will further stimulate economic growth between China and the UAE.”

Chengdu is one of three mainland Chinese cities served by Etihad, along with Beijing and Shanghai.

Sichuan Airlines has commenced its first ever flights to Sydney.

The Chinese carrier landed in the Australian city for the first time today (20 December 2013), marking the start of a new twice weekly service direct from Chongqing. Services will leave the Chinese city every Tuesday and Friday at 0100, getting into Sydney at 1400. The return leg will depart at 2145, getting back into Chongqing at 0445 the next morning.

Passengers also have the option of travelling onwards from Chongqing to Chengdu, after Sichuan Airlines recently resumed this domestic route as an extension of the Sydney service.

The inaugural flight was welcomed in Sydney by New South Wales’ Minister for Tourism & Major Events, George Souris.

“Western China is one of the most exciting growth markets in China for NSW tourism and Sichuan Airlines’ decision to increase flights to Sydney will support this growth,” Souris said.

“Strong growth in Chinese visitors to NSW is proof the NSW government’s China Tourism Strategy to increase visitor numbers from China is working. The strategy has been funded by the NSW government to the tune of AU$15 million (US$13.3m) over the next four years,” he added.

The route, which is operated using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft, marks Sichuan Airlines’ second move into the Australian market. The carrier currently operates direct flights between Chengdu and Melbourne.

British Airways will expand its new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners to China and India next year.

The airline has confirmed that it will commence Dreamliner flights to the Indian city of Hyderabad on 30 March 2014, before deploying the fuel-efficient aircraft on its Chengdu route from 5 May. The frequency of flights to the southwest Chinese city will also be increased from three to five per week from this date.

The two new destinations form part of a broader roll out of new destinations using BA’s recently-acquired fleet of B787s and Airbus A380s.

From 1 September 2014, the UK’s national carrier will commence A380 flights to Washington DC. The US capital will become BA’s fourth A380 destination following the Hong Kong and Los Angeles, which launched earlier this year, and Johannesburg, which will commence in February 2014.

In addition to Hyderabad and Chengdu, BA will deploy its Dreamliners on routes to Philadelphia from 5 June and Calgary from 5 July 2014.

Meanwhile, BA’s Tokyo Haneda service will be ramped up from five weekly flights to daily from 6 May next year. Routes to Mexico City and Cape Town will also see extra flights.

“Thanks to the arrival of the new aircraft – the centrepiece of our GBP5 billion (US$8.2bn) investment in improvements for our customers – we’re delivering on our promise to introduce new destinations and an even better schedule,” said Richard Tams, BA’s head of UK & Ireland sales.

“We’re receiving great customer feedback on our new aircraft so we’re delighted to be able to roll them out across more of our network and hope our customers enjoy them on these important Indian, Chinese and American routes. More destinations will follow as we will receive 12 A380s and 24 787s over the next three years.”

BA currently operates four Dreamliners and three A380s. The B787s feature 214 seats in three classes, while the A380s come equipped with 469 seats in four classes.
