Cosmos has announced the appointment of Janet Parton to director of sales.

Parton was formerly head of sales, Cosmos and Avalon Waterways. She helped communicate the escorted tour operator’s rebrand to travel trade earlier this year as well as successfully targeting new markets for luxury river line Avalon Waterways.

“During her tenure as head of sales, Janet displayed outstanding leadership abilities, an enthusiasm for sales, a passion for cruising and touring holidays and extensive product knowledge,” said Giles Hawke, CEO of Cosmos and Avalon Waterways.

“She has played a vital role in developing and strengthening our trade network and in growing the Cosmos and Avalon brands in the UK. Her genuine spirit and wealth of expertise are essential during this next period of exponential growth for us.”

Parton has over 20 years’ experience working in a sales environment, including holding senior sales positions at Carnival UK and MSC Cruises, and is currently chair of the trade engagement committee for CLIA UK and Ireland.

She leads a team of three trade account managers, including newly appointed Danielle Radford who will cover the north of England.

Avalon Waterways has launched its 2018 brochure and a newly designed website, with trade portal, all backed by a mainstream TV campaign, to raise awareness of Avalon river cruises to the UK market.

With a trade ‘call to action’, the ad campaign features a 60 second advert and represents the biggest broadcast investment by Avalon Waterways UK.

Targeting the 50 plus age group, the campaign is being broadcast on a range of Sky, ITV and Channel 4 channels over a six week period from 19 June 2017.

Giles Hawke, Avalon Waterways (UK) said:  “As we head towards the Brexit process, concerns have already been voiced in the industry about the possibility of cruise holiday prices rising, so it’s even more important to get the message across about the inclusiveness of a river cruise. 

“The cruise sector needs to demonstrate amazing value for money linked to high quality experiences, compared to stand-alone city breaks or other types of holidays.  We want to instil confidence into the market and believe our TV campaign will do just that, driving first time river cruise customers to our agent partners.”   

Avalon has re-launched its website with a dedicated trade portal and a totally refreshed look. Agents can tailor customers’ cruise and travel arrangements to suit an individual with the option to select their preferred stateroom category, closest UK departure airport and favourite airline, and with live flight pricing, are guaranteed of the lowest prices available.

The website will host three 30 second versions of the TV advert to encapsulate the Avalon cruise experience, and help agents show customers what makes the Avalon river cruise experience so special.

Hawke continued: “Improving our brochure and web design will further help agents sell Avalon cruises, and we’re pleased to host a high number of agents this year on our ships, to gain first-hand experience, and put them in a strong position to interest customers in our cruises.”

Early Booking Offers

A range of early booking offers are available for bookings made before 31 October 2017.  These include a low deposit offer of £99pp on European cruises, and £199pp on Asia and Amazon cruises, as well as Galapagos coastal cruises. 

To meet demand for the increase in small groups wanting to travel together, Avalon is offering free places with group bookings.  One in ten passengers can travel for free on an Avalon Panorama Suite Ship group booking, and one in eight passengers on an Avalon Deluxe Ship group booking.

Agents can earn £20 Love2shop vouchers for any booking made before 30 June 2017 by emailing their name, agency name and booking reference to agencysales@cosmos.co.uk.   

2018 Lead-In Prices

Avalon’s 2018 cruise programme offers river cruise holidays in Europe, Asia and South America.  Featured rivers include the Rhine, Moselle, Danube, Main, Rhône, Seine, Dutch & Belgian Waterways, Mekong, Irrawaddy and Amazon, as well as coastal sailing around the Galapagos Islands.

Cosmos has launched the 2018 A-Rosa river cruise programme two months earlier to help agents capture the early booking river cruise market. 

Agents can book Cosmos’ fully packaged A-Rosa cruises with flights, overseas transfers and a VIP private home pick-up service included.

Offering a choice of six ships on four rivers, the programme features 37 cruise itineraries with 297 departures for customers to choose from. Prices lead in from GBP649 per person.

The tour operator has launched an early booking offer for any 2018 holiday booking made before 31 July 2017; the private VIP home pick-up service is available for customers living within a 100 mile radius of their departure airport, an increase of 50 miles.

Holiday specialist Cosmos Tours & Cruises has re-launched as Cosmos, taking a new direction as it undergoes a full rebrand and develops a totally new website with an agent bookable portal.

Giles Hawke, Cosmos’ CEO, commented: “This marks a new start for us as we use our name change as a platform for growth, development and a new approach to providing our agent partners and customers with the ultimate holiday experience.

“In existence since 1961 and still family owned, our company has gone through a complete transition and we’re now in the perfect place to change the outmoded view of Cosmos and showcase the incredible range of holiday experiences we can offer our customers, as well as great ways of getting the very best value.

“Our new Cosmos rebrand has been designed to reflect the holiday experience we now offer, a worldwide choice of active experiences rooted in “adventures made easy” as demand grows for more authentic travel experiences.  Our focus is based on customers’ desire to learn and experience something unique and different, and to be able to enjoy their own holiday adventure.”

Hawke said the new name, logo and branding design applies to “the whole customer journey from brochures, trade digital marketing, and social media to the website, customer collateral and documentation to highlight our promise to deliver ‘adventures made easy”.

A new ‘Cosmos Journey Line’, linking different exciting aspects and highlights of the holiday are flagged up with colourful and striking imagery with helpful icons to highlight the included value and holiday highlights.

Launching on Monday 24 April, the new Cosmos website (cosmos.co.uk) features a dedicated trade portal and a fresh design.  To streamline the documentation process, Cosmos now provides e-documents. The new trade portal, cosmos.co.uk/agents will be rolled out to all agents over a two-month period with dedicated log in details provided.

Hawke commented: “Providing total flexibility, agents will be able to search for holidays, check prices and confirm bookings.    This is a key development in our trade sales strategy to support agents and provide them with all the tools to work with us.  In the escorted touring market, it puts us ahead of many other competitors.”

“The new portal will enable agents to make bookings at any time of day.   A key factor for home workers working out of standard business hours and it also helps agents be in total control of the booking process whether they have a customer on the phone and want to quote and secure a booking there and then, or a customer in front of them, to explore a range of options easily and quickly.”

To celebrate the Cosmos’ rebrand and new agent web portal, agents can enter a holiday to win a beach holiday to the Maldives’ Sun Island Resort & Spa, by emailing the new Cosmos strapline as the subject line to agencysales@cosmos.co.uk by 31 May. Cosmos Tours & Cruises has become an exclusive trade partner to Pullmantur Cruises.

Under the agreement Cosmos will sell packaged holidays with the Spanish cruise line, which is owned by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, to the UK market.

Packages will include flights and transfers with some offering pre and post-cruise stays.

“The high level of service and all-inclusive product available with Pullmantur will fit well within our portfolio of river and ocean cruises. Our online access to Pullmantur inventory and availability will make it easy for agents to check customers’ requirements like cabin upgrades, itinerary choices and departure dates,” said Simon Leeming, Cosmos Tours & Cruises’ product manager. “Our plan is to increase the product range of Pullmantur cruises for our 2015 programme which is due to go on sale in the next few weeks.  Offering all-inclusive cruise accommodation including premium brand drinks and a fixed rate for onboard gratuities means customers will be able to pre-budget their holiday spend.”

Andrew McKenna from Broadway Travel, the UK GSA for Pullmantur, added: “Cosmos Tours & Cruises’ strong relationship with the UK trade and new Travelbox technology giving access to live flight inventory provides us with the best way of offering agents packaged Pullmantur cruises for their customers.”

The Monarch Group has announced a return to profitability after implementing a successful turnaround plan.

Unaudited figures released this morning for the financial year ending 31 October 2013 showed all its divisions delivered profits in 2013, with its gross turnover seeing a 15.5% increase to GBP1.23 billion.

Monarch Airlines posted an 11.7% rise in turnover to GBP763.2m, while its tour operator arm saw turnover rise 15.4% to GBP336.4m.

Its numbers were helped along by its efficiency programme which has seen GBP52 million saved across the group, while its online traffic has increased 10% to 22 million unique visitors.

Its airline has seen a 10% increase in capacity to 8.1 million seats with a total of 10 million to be on sale by the end of 2016, with plans to order 60 narrow-bodied aircraft in the first quarter of next year at a list price of US$6 billion.

Its tour operations, which includes the Cosmos, Avro and somewhere2stay brands, have seen a 12% increase in passenger numbers to 911,000 with an 18% growth in package holidays booked. Earlier this week TUI had also shown a resurgence in the package holiday sales as customers look for value and security.

“I am delighted to announce the return to profitability of The Monarch Group in 2013. This was the outcome targeted by our 2011 refinancing, which was based on a clear plan that combined the achievement of business efficiencies and intra group synergies with growth strategies for each business area.  All these elements have been delivered in tough markets,” said Iain Rawlinson, executive chairman of the Monarch Group.

“The actions we have taken in the last two years provide strong foundations from which to plan the next phase of growth and development.  Our steady investment in this period – in strengthening the group and divisional management, raising awareness of our trusted travel brands, improving distribution, introducing business efficiencies, and answering the needs of customers – provides a strong platform from which to complete our modernisation agenda.”

New Christmas advertising

The group is now gearing up for a Christmas advertising campaign focused on customer service at Monarch Airlines. The group has already rolled out a ‘WorldHost’ training programme based on the Olympics’ customer service, with its advertisements to show examples of how employees have delivered.

Winter 2013/14 trading is said to be in line with expectations although summer 2014 is currently ‘cautious’ with ‘satisfactory’ sales so far.

“Whilst we are encouraged by the more positive recent economic news of late, in the short-term there remains overcapacity in the aviation industry and we believe many travel customers are cautious about the economic outlook. However, our Group structure, combining the three mutually supporting business areas of the scheduled airline, tour operations and aircraft engineering, each with its own independent growth strategy, provides us with resilience in this very competitive market environment,” added Rawlinson.

Titan’s ‘World’s Best River Cruises’

Titan Travel has issues its 2013 brochure covering its ‘World’s Best River Cruises’. The programme features five-star cruises from Uniworld alongside Titan’s scheduled flights, transfers and VIP Home Departure Service. Thirty itineraries are included in the brochure with early booking discounts available until 30 September.

 

 

 Cosmos’ Distant Dreams and Goa & Indian Ocean

 Cosmos has released two brochures covering its ‘Distant Dreams’ and ‘Goa & Indian Ocean’. Its Distant Dreams  programme covers August 2012 to October 2013 with savings for holidays n Goa, the Caribbean and Egypt.  Destinations in the brochure also include Mexico, Cuba, Grenada, Tobago, Jamaica, Luxor, Gambia, Kenya, Maldives  and Sri Lanka. In addition, its dedicated Goa & Indian Ocean brochure includes new nine and 12-night stays as well as  the traditional  lengths. More twin-centre or tour and stay holidays are on offer, as is the new introduced ‘elite’  branded sister  properties Constance Halaveli Resort and Constance Moofushi Resort.

 

Newmarket’s North America

Newmarket Holidays has added 20 tours to its brochure covering North America and Canada. The programme includes holidays up to spring 2014 with new itineraries including ‘California’s Golden Coast’ with a cruise to Mexico; a ‘Pacific Northwest’ tour visiting Portland and Seattle and a ‘Best of Canada’ holiday. Travel agents who book the ‘New England in Fall’ or ‘New England & Niagara Falls’ departures in 2012 by 31 August will get £50 per booking. Invoice Newmarket with booking references by 14 September to claim.  

 

Jewel in the Crown’s Goa

Jewel in the Crown Holidays has launched the first edition of its 2012/13 ‘Jewel of Goa’ brochure. More than 50 properties from one-star guesthouses to five-star hotels are included across 16 destinations. The programme also sees more tours to the Taj Mahal, Golden Triangle and Kerala, with optional excursions including a ride on an elephant. There are two weekly direct departures available from November 2012 to April 2013 – Gatwick on Tuesday and Manchester on Thursdays.

 

 Inghams’ Ski & Snowboard 2012/13

 Inghams has launched its new 2012/13 Ski & Snowboard brochure for 27 new chalets and chalet hotels. Its  programme covers 80 resorts in eight different countries, including seven new resorts in Auffach and Neustift in  Austria; Les 2 Alpes, Megève and Serre Chevalier in France and Colfosco and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy. Clients also  have the chance to stay at the remote Skoki Lodge from Lake Louise, where Prince William and Kate stayed during  their Royal Tour last year. six new all-inclusive holidays and early booking discounts up to £600 per person are also  available, with thousands of free child places added.

 

Prestige’s Canada winter

Prestige Holidays has released its largest winter holidays programme for Canada, including ski, wildlife, city and rail breaks. The brochure includes three new resorts in Sun Peaks, Big White and Fernie with an increased amount of options in Banff and new product in Jasper and Lake Louise. Other new additions include a three-night stay yin the Sacacomie Lodge in Saint-Alexis-des-Monts; Aurora Borealis breaks; polar bear viewing trips; journeys with Via Rail and adventure breaks.

Ahead of Thirsty Thursday Cardiff, we speak to Gary Anslow, sales director at Cosmos & Monarch Travel Group on new departures and product.

 

Is this the first time Cosmos has operated holidays from Cardiff? What were the reasons behind the decision to launch/come back?

Apart from offering a small allocation of seats on a flight-only basis mostly to Mediterranean summer destinations from Cardiff, this is the first time a full holiday programme has been operated by Cosmos and certainly to a long haul destination like Florida.

Further to the success of our Florida programme from Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow and recent support of our US trade partners, we wanted to cover a larger catchment area across the UK and provide regional flying from Cardiff to offer our customers the convenience of flying  from their local airport.

 

What has interest been like for the Cardiff-Orlando flights since you announced the schedule?

Since the launch of the programme, feedback has been good from both travel agents and consumers as Florida continues to be one of the most popular long haul destinations.  In the past, demand for Florida holidays in the Wales area has been huge so we are pleased with the pick-up so far.

New attractions and theme park rides opening all the time means that the destination hasn’t lost its appeal for the UK family market. By offering the convenience and flexibility of flying from their local airport, we are hoping this will increase the appeal of a Florida holiday to those living in the area. Our customers can also take advantage of a range of extra value offers such as room upgrades, free nights and even discounts on attraction tickets.

 

How else has Cosmos changed its product for the USA for 2012/13?

This year has also seen the Cosmos Florida programme increase capacity significantly out of Gatwick and Glasgow for the peak summer holiday period.  Cosmos now offers a        total of three flights a week from Gatwick and two a week from Glasgow during school summer holidays. We have also added Newcastle departures to the programme which brings the total number of UK airports to five.

The 2013 programme went on sale at the end of April offering direct flights to Orlando from our five featured UK airports.  A series of early booking offers including a low deposit of £75 per person, free car hire upgrade, free travel insurance for children and free airport lounge passes on bookings made before 31 July ’12 (conditions and dates apply).

From the escorted touring side of the business, Cosmos Tours & Cruises is set to launch its 2013 programme appropriately on 4 July 2012 with its latest range of USA tours, cruises and twin-centre holidays.  Exciting new products include a tour marking the 50th anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King Jr; a tour of the Lone Star State, Texas as well as a 16-day tour of the National Parks & Canyon and the ‘Wild West’.              

 

Outside of the US, what is new for Cosmos that travel agents should be aware of?

Early summer has been a very busy time for Cosmos Holidays.  As well as the new Florida programme, Cosmos Holidays has launched its new winter holidays (2012/13) with daily flying to a whole range of Spanish destinations and a wide choice of flights to other winter sun resorts. 

A summer preview brochure is also on sale with a new European city break programme featured for the first time. 

Most recently, we launched a year-round Madeira program featuring Monarch’s new scheduled service to the island with departures from both London Gatwick and Birmingham throughout the winter and summer seasons.

Flight-only options through flight-only brand Avro Flights are on sale now for both winter 2012/13 and summer 2013.
