Post Pandemic, the demand of Indians choosing Vietnam as a desirable destination has continued to increase. The country has been actively encouraging Indians to visit through a series of bilateral conferences and activities. Instead of choosing popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia such as Thailand or Singapore, Indian tourists are now starting to gradually turn their attention to Vietnam, a destination with beautiful scenery, delicious food, and high-class resort services.

The most in-demand destinations by Indians include Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc, Quy Nhon, Danang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Phan Thiet, Dalat, and Halong, with the country continuing to be sort out by Indians traveling for leisure with family & friends.

Indians are now heading and planning a trip to Vietnam within 1 year waiting period for US Visa. According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), an average monthly rise of 51% was seen in the number of Indian tourists to Vietnam in the first 10 months of this year; A total of 20,681 Indian visiting in October and 82,066 in the first 10 months of 2022.

Focusing on connecting Vietnam & India ever closer than before, VietJet is currently operating 17 direct flights to India and has recently announced a set of direct flights that will connect Da Nang to Mumbai & New Delhi, bridging the 3194 kilometers gap between the two countries in approximately 4.5 hours.

Facilitating Indian travel by providing visas on arrival, Vietnam seeks to bring passengers from the big cities in India’s West and Central-Southern region to the economic and tourism hubs of Vietnam. Operating direct flight from Mumbai, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, Indians can travel to Vietnam and the Vietnamese cities of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc. Since July, the number of Indian tourists to Vietnam each month surpasses the figures recorded in 2019.

Luxury hotel company Viceroy is set to make its debut in Southeast Asia, with a new project at Cocobay – the huge integrated resort rising on Vietnam’s central coast.

Set to open in 2020, Viceroy Da Nang Vietnam will be a five-star resort with more than 700 keys, including hotel rooms, suites and condominiums. It will also feature eight F&B outlets, swimming pools, a spa and extensive event space including three ballrooms.

Viceroy Da Nang Vietnam

Its twin towers will be joined at the top by a “crystal bridge”, from which guests will be offered views of Danang and the sea.

“This is Viceroy’s first foray into Asia’s most highly-anticipated market, which is being created from the ground up,” said Anton Bawab, regional president of the Viceroy Hotel Group. “The mix of culture, nightlife and hospitality that will come to life here will solidify Viceroy Da Nang Vietnam as a must-visit destination.”

Set between the river and sea, close to Danang and Hoi An in central Vietnam, Cocobay will become a major new destination for the region. Its master plan includes plans for a convention centre, opera house, sports arena, beach club, shops, F&B outlets and nightlife venues.

The development made headlines recently when Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese football star, announced that he had purchased a property at Cocobay.

Viceroy Da Nang Vietnam will join the company’s portfolio of 20 properties currently operating or under development in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East. Arguably the most famous is the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi, which spans the Formula One motor racing circuit in the UAE capital.

As well as Vietnam, Viceroy is planning to launch in Serbia, Portugal, Turkey and Argentina in future.

The Vietnamese government is moving ahead with plans to develop Danang’s Son Tra Peninsula into a national-level tourism area by 2025.

Danang Today reports that the country’s Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, has personally approved the proposal to turn the area into a high-end holiday and eco-tourism centre for the central coast region.

In a recent interview with the newspaper, the deputy director of the local Department of Tourism, Tran Chi Cuong, remarked that the master plan will help the city achieve its target of welcoming 4.6 million visitors by 2030 and creating approximately 2,800 local tourism jobs.

The newly-approved plan is focused on sustainable development, and is committed to conserving the biological diversity of the Son Tra Nature Reserve. Priority will be given to protecting local flora and fauna, including endangered species such as the red-shanked douc langur.

Efforts will be made to attract domestic and overseas investment in products, particularly those associated with spiritual and ecological tourism, adventure sports and beach holidays.

Nearly six hectares of “clean” land have been designated for the expansion of Danang International Airport.

The Vietnam News Services (VNS) reports that the land had to be treated to remove dioxins from the soil, left over from the chemicals used in the Vietnam War.

Major General Bui Anh Chung, deputy head commander of Air Defences, said that in the first phase of the clean-up project, 150,000m³ of sludge and contaminated soil had been excavated, and 45,000m³ had been subject to thermal cleansing treatment.

“Another 45,000m³ of contaminated soil and sediment will be treated by July. The project helped clear 19 hectares… of which six hectares is now ready for the expansion of aircraft parking lots and runaway at Danang Airport,” he told VNS.

Danang Airport is being expanded ahead of the 2017 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit, which is due to be held in Danang in October.

BHMAsia, which operates the X2 and Away boutique hotel brands, is expanding its presence across Vietnam.

Having entered the Vietnamese market last year, the Bangkok-based hotel group has now signed its sixth management contract in the country. Its nationwide pipeline now includes properties in Danang, Hoi An, Halong Bay and Viet Tri with a combined inventory of more than 850 keys. The projects range in size from 60 to over 230 keys and include a mix of hotels, resorts, villas and residences.

X2 Halong Bay Hill Resort will open in 2017
X2 Halong Bay Hill Resort will open in 2017

According to company CEO, Anthony McDonald, BHMAsia has been successful in Vietnam “due to the company’s philosophies and Asian culture”.

“Having been born in Asia, the company understands the way to do business here and the importance of long-term personal relationships,” McDonald said.

The sixth property signed by BHMAsia in Vietnam will also be the first to open. Scheduled to debut in Q2 2017, the X2 Vibe Hoi An Residence will form part of the New Hoi An City development. This seafront project will feature 230 residential units, ranging from one- to three-bedroom apartments and villas.

Also in 2017, BHMAsia will launch the X2 Halong Bay Hill Resort, and then in 2018 the company will open the Away Danang Thuy Tu Resort, Away Elite Hoi An Hotel and Residence, X2 Danang Resort and X2 Vibe Viet Tri Hotel. And further expansion is planned; the group expects to have more than 10 projects under development by the end of the year, and 16 by the end of 2017.

“We are building a team to support the new openings planned over the next 12-24 months,” explained Simon Jinks, BHMAsia’s country manager for Vietnam. “We are very confident with the Vietnamese market, and developers and investors see great value in our brands and what value we can bring to their projects.”

Cambodia Angkor Air will expand its international network this year, with the launch of three new routes to neighbouring Vietnam.

The national carrier, which is part-owned by Vietnam Airlines, is planning to launch new flights connecting the Cambodian coastal city of Sihanoukville with Ho Chi Minh City, and Siem Reap with Danang and Hanoi.

The new Sihanoukville-HCMC route will commence on 17 June 2016, operating six times a week. This will make Cambodia Angkor Air the first airline to connect these two cities.

Then on 1 July, the airline will start flying three times a week between Siem Reap and Danang. Both these routes will be operated using Cambodia Angkor Air’s ATR 72 turboprop aircraft.

And later in 2016, Cambodia Angkor Air plans to launch a new service linking Siem Reap with Hanoi.

The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported the deputy director of the city’s Department of Culture, Sports & Tourism, Tran Chi Cuong, as revealing plans to turn tourism into the mainstay of the local economy between 2016 and 2020, with a focus on creating unique tourism products in line with “cultural values and environmental protection”.

The department has set a target of attracting eight million tourists to Danang by 2020, including two million international visitors, and generating VND27.4 trillion (US$1.23 billion) in revenues.

The plan will see Danang invest in new maritime tourism services and develop its luxury resort sector, VNA said. It also plans to develop new attractions in the Son Tra Peninsula and Hai Van Pass areas, as well as in the Ba Na–Suoi Mo tourism zone, which is home to the 1,487-metre-high Ba Na Mountain. This will include a new golf course and hot spring resort.

Another area of focus is environmental protection, with local authorities keen to raise local awareness and promote a code of conduct on the environmental impact of tourism activities.

Jetstar Asia is expanding its coverage in Southeast Asia with the launch of direct flights to three new destinations.

This autumn, the Singapore-based low-cost carrier will launch services to the Indonesian cities of Palembang and Pekanbaru, and Danang in central Vietnam.

Flights to Palembang and Pekanbaru, the second and third largest cities in Sumatra, will start on 29 October and 5 November respectively. Both routes will operate three times a week.

Flights to Danang will then get underway on 27 November, also operating three times a week.

“Indonesia and Vietnam are two of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia and with the opening of their domestic aviation markets we’ve seen a growth in demand for new low fare travel opportunities,” said Jetstar Asia’s CEO, Bara Pasupathi.

“The new routes offer Singapore travellers direct access to popular business and leisure destinations, currently only provided by full-service carriers, with great opportunities to connect to the Jetstar Group’s broader network across Southeast Asia.”

All three new routes will be operated using Jetstar’s 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft. Tickets are already on sale.

The company has submitted a Request for Concepts (RFC) for “new integrated entertainment facilities” at the coastal complex near Danang, which would comprise a gaming complex.

BTC said the move was aimed at attracting more visitors from China.

“We are seeking facilities and strategies that are focused on attracting foreign tourists from greater Asia, with a particular focus on inbound tourists from China and greater Asia,” said Steve Small, managing director of BTC.

Small added that Banyan Tree will not be “in any way associated with the operations of these facilities”, but plans to identify companies to run the casino independently.

“We believe that experienced operators will be interested in the potential of integrated entertainment facilities and support the government’s aim to boost Vietnam’s tourism competitiveness,” Small added.

Laguna Lang Co opened in April 2013 and is home to Banyan Tree and Angsana resorts and residences, a golf course, conference facilities and retail outlets.

Asia’s inbound golf tourism industry needs an overhaul if it is to continue growing at the same pace as during the past decade, according to the managing director of one of the region’s largest golf tour operators.

Mark Siegel (pictured), who owns Bangkok-based Golfasian, warned that several issues could limit the sector’s future growth in Asia. These include uncompetitive pricing, low service standards, a lack of business in non-peak seasons, and the need to upgrade old courses.

Siegel added that stand-alone courses in isolated beachside destinations are not viable options for most visitors, and that destination marketing consortia offering multi-course approach should be adopted more widely.

“Forms of co-operation between golf courses and resorts in an area show that the old days of one standout course attracting large numbers of golfers are over,” said Siegel. “You can have the best course, but golfers want more. Golfers don’t travel only to explore a market; they want a whole golf tourism experience, which is why Thailand and Vietnam, in particular, are now so successful.

“When a course or a destination gets it right, the benefits are huge. Look at Hua Hin in Thailand and Danang in Vietnam. No-one had heard of either 10 years ago. Now they are among the best and most popular golf destinations in Asia because the courses paid attention to the basics, have co-operated together (with hotels too), have kept prices reasonable and offer a wonderful experience. If more destinations copied these models and implemented a whole supply chain on the ground they would be more successful,” he added.

Referring to prices, Siegel said green fees of US$150-250 at some Southeast Asian courses, and in China, are affecting visitor numbers.

“Some courses are pricing themselves out of the market, which is sad because every golfer wants to play the best course in a region,” he warned. “Asia needs to be careful it doesn’t drive golf tourists to other markets, such as Turkey, Portugal and South Africa and elsewhere. It must remain competitive.”

In future, Siegel said he foresees the rise of golf tourism in “undiscovered” places such as Cambodia, Indonesia, and even Laos and Myanmar, plus more low season visitors.

“There are more than a million golfers travelling to and within Southeast Asia each year. Average land packages are US$1,000-1,500 per person. Add the cost of flights, food, entertainment and shopping and a typical golfer spends US$2,000-3,000 on a golf holiday. That’s very valuable to the economies of golf tourism destinations.

“It’s proof why we have to be careful to protect the market and grow it to two million golfers a year by 2025,” Siegel concluded.
