The Taiwan Tourism Bureau (TTB) has partnered with the Mumbai Metro, a rapid transit system serving Mumbai, and the wider metropolitan region, to expand awareness of Taiwan as a destination and promote tourism.

Dr. Trust Lin, director of TTB in Singapore flagged off the train wrapped in colourful campaign images, on its maiden journey from the Versova Metro Station. Featuring photos of popular web-series stars, Sumeet Vyas and Sapna Pabbi on vacation in Taiwan, the vibrant imagery highlights the great variety of holiday experiences offered by Taiwan as well as its rich history and scenic beauty.

This special Mumbai Metro train will run in August, also in conjunction with India’s Independence Day. There will be a Taiwan-branded train for every seven trains that stop by each station, reaching out to Mumbai commuters at a high frequency.

Over the past one year, TTB has increased its marketing budget for India by six-fold, taking it to USD 1.2 million annually. Additionally, Indian nationals who hold a residency or valid visa for the US, Canada, the Schengen states, the UK, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand or Australia are now entitled to a free Taiwan visa, which can easily be applied for online.

Taiwan is increasingly becoming the destination of choice among Indians, with a recent report revealing a year-on-year increase in tourist arrivals (+41% to 3,608) from India in February.

To further boost tourist numbers, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau (TTB) has unveiled its new vision for the Indian market. Titled “2 20:20”, the strategy will target 2% of India’s high-income earners and, by cooperating with top tour operators in India, aim to drive tourist arrivals up 20% by 2020.

Last year, the bureau expanded its annual marketing budget for the India segment to USD 1.2 million — a sixfold increase. Further expansion to this budget is on the cards as TTB rolls out its 2 20:20 vision, said Dr Trust Lin, director of TTB Singapore.

“To create awareness about Taiwan”

“Our main objective is to create awareness about Taiwan as a leisure destination in
India,” he said, citing plans to promote the island’s nature parks, food tours and cruises.

Apart from leisure, Taiwan is also becoming a top choice among Indian companies for business travel. Since 2017, the Tourism Bureau sector of the Ministry of communications has been actively inviting Indian companies to hold their incentive travel in Taiwan. One company that recently made the trip here was steel-making giant Tata Steel Group. Highlights of the trip included a feast where staff tucked into Taiwanese cuisine and enjoyed the night view by the Tamsui River.

Meanwhile, Taiwan earlier this year welcomed over 400 employees from Hyundai Group India to attend MICE conferences, as well as ASUS India for incentive travel.

UAE’s premium-experience travel website, Musafir.com, has announced an alliance with the Taiwan Tourism Board to raise awareness about Taiwan as a leisure destination for the Middle East.

In order to attract more travellers, the Taiwan Tourism Board announced a new partnership with the goal of ramping up the “Heart of Asia” as a premier tourist destination. The bureau, which has been active in promoting the country, selected Musafir.com as its latest partner.

The two parties will collaborate and conduct joint marketing campaigns in order to diversify the tourism culture in the UAE. Both Musafir.com and the Taiwan Tourism Board aim to position the island nation as the top destination among travellers out of the UAE as both countries increasingly appeal to the leisure and MICE sector.

The collaboration also comes at a key time for Musafir.com, as the company continues its rapid expansion in the UAE and the wider Middle East region.

To mark this significant new partnership, Musafir.com created a range of travel deals for Taiwan. The packages cater to all income markets and cover everything from short holidays and adventurous getaways to week-long breaks that give travellers the chance to experience Taiwanese culture.

“These packages we will be able to increase the volume of travel”

Dr Trust Lin, director of the Taiwan Tourism Board, said: “We are confident that with these packages we will be able to increase the volume of travel and number of passengers from the UAE in particular and the Middle East in general.”

From hiking in the Yangmingshan National Park and experiencing Taiwan’s famous hot springs to visiting lost cities like Jiufen and white water rafting—travellers can look forward to exploring Taiwan at budget-friendly prices.

Dubbing Taiwan as a travel gem, Musafir.com is now offering holiday packages that start from AED 3,899 (USD 1,061). The packages include city tours, shopping for souvenirs, temple excursions, nature trips, accommodation, and flights including airport transfers.

Becoming ever-popular as a Muslim-friendly nation, Taiwan eyes to be the preferred travel destination for Middle East travellers.

In an effort to tap the Muslim market, Taiwan now has more than 150 restaurants, hotels, and other business operations that have obtained Halal certification. It’s a process where products, food, or services are made sure they follow “halal” standards, and it just goes to show that Taiwan is eyeing Middle East travellers.

An evidence of this tourism strategy is when the Taiwan Tourism Bureau (TTB) recently participated at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), the largest travel industry fair in the Middle East held annually in Dubai. Headed by TTB’s director Dr Trust Lin, delegates from the country that were included were Lion Travel Service, Pro Tours Express, the Chinese Muslim Association, Xing Yuan Tea Farm and Big 5 Tours.

Dr Trust Lin, director of Taiwan Tourism Bureau

Lin was quoted: “To attract more Muslim tourists and to increase the visibility of Taiwan in the Muslim world, we are building a Muslim-friendly environment in Taiwan. The Bureau is working with Chinese Muslim Association (CMA, Taiwan) to issue certifications for restaurants that provide halal food, as well as hotels and central kitchens.”

At Taiwan’s booth during the event, the band Liu Sheng Ji, mixed traditional music with modern elements. The group showcased their famous video Breakout which received 100,000 views on YouTube within 7 days. Calligraphy artist Ku Chi-chun, tea maker Liu Ching-yuan, and aluminium wire artist Teng Chia-Ming, were also present to engage with the visitors that came to the stand.

According to Dr Lin, the country has been dedicated to becoming a Muslim-friendly nation, and this can be attributed to the double-digit growth of tourists from Muslim countries. Among the fastest growing travellers from Muslim-majority countries, the United Arab Emirates comes first, with more than 20% growth.

“Our aim is to provide food and comfortable hotels for Muslim visitors. Our bureau also provides subsidies for the acquisition of halal certification by restaurants and hotels to encourage them to improve or renovate their facilities to fulfil Muslims needs. In order to make Muslim travellers feel more at ease, the Bureau is encouraging public transportation facilities and scenic spots to have prayer rooms and Islam-compliant toilets,” Lin added.

Aside from its appearance and efforts at the ATM, Taiwan held travel agent workshops in Muscat, Oman and in Dubai. The workshop in Dubai was attended by TAITRA (Taiwan External Trade Development Council) and Emirates Airlines also gave free economy class tickets to Taipei in both events.

In 2017, the number of tourists from the Middle East set a new high record. But the rise isn’t over just yet. The record number was soon followed by a double-digit, year-over-year growth of 13.64% just for the first couple of months this 2018.
