EL AL Israel Airlines Ltd. is proud to announce the arrival of its 16th Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which landed in Israel on the morning of Monday 31 July after a direct flight from the Boeing factory in Seattle, WA, using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The historic flight marks EL AL’s first use of SAF and signifies the company’s global leadership in reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases.

30% of the total fuel used in the flight from Seattle to Tel Aviv was SAF. SAF is chemically similar to traditional fossil jet fuel but is produced from sources such as carbon in the air. In June 2023, EL AL enlisted in the IATA Environmental Assessment Program (IEnvA), which assesses the commitment of the world’s leading airlines to improving their environmental and sustainability performance.  EL AL’s participation in the certification programme serves as another example of the company’s environmental commitment.

The aircraft’s arrival was celebrated with a water salute ceremony, attended by EL AL CEO, Dina Ben Tal Ganancia; Nof HaGalil’s Mayor, Ronen Plot; President of Boeing Israel,. Ido Nehushtan;. Kenny Rozenberg; and Daryl Hagler.

Dina Ben Tal Ganancia, CEO of EL AL Israel Airlines Ltd. said: “Welcoming a new Dreamliner jet is always an exciting event for us. The historic arrival of our first jet using SAF marks another important milestone in our strategic plan – expanding and renewing our fleet and strengthening our commitment to sustainability. We are grateful to Boeing for our long-term partnership, which has helped us provide our customers with the safest and most enjoyable travel experience.”

The new Dreamliner is the fourth 787-8 in EL AL’s fleet, and part of the company’s most recent acquisition of new aircraft. The financing transaction was arranged by ABL Aviation and is the 6th JOLCO financing transaction executed by EL AL since 2018. The jet can accommodate 238 passengers in three classes – Business, Premium, and Economy. EL AL’s Dreamliner fleet now includes four Boeing 787-8 aircraft and 12 787-9 aircraft, which fly to long-haul destinations in North America, Europe, and the Far East. The arrival of the newest aircraft is part of EL AL’s strategic plan to expand and renew its fleet, improve the customer experience, and focus on more efficient fuel usage.

Israeli airline El Al says it plans to launch scheduled flights between Tel Aviv and Melbourne in the coming months, a route made possible following a recent opening of Saudi air space.

Speaking at the Google Tourism Conference in Tel Aviv last week, El Al boss Dina Ben-Tal Ganancia said that the new air space access means it could fly its Boeing 787 Dreamliners on the 15hr route from its hub at Ben Gurion International Airport to Melbourne, marking its first regular foray into Australia.

El Al has been seen in Australian skies before, with three repatriation flights to Melbourne in the early days of the pandemic to help its Jewish diaspora return home. These flights also served as a trial as to ongoing viability of a direct route between the two cities.

“So in that respect, the operational trial is maybe the most important part of this trial, and alongside with the commercial part these three flights should give us a good picture of that aspect”.

Ganancia said that while most of El Al’s Melbourne-based passengers on the three test flights conducted in 2020 ended their journey at Tel Aviv, an on-going scheduled service would realise the city’s role as a connecting hub to the rest of Europe.

“El Al offers many, many destinations in Europe, most of them on a double daily basis, and Ben Gurion Airport has a very smooth connecting process”.

Hong Kong will become one of the first destinations to welcome El Al’s new fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The Israeli national carrier has ordered 16 787s, the first of which is due to be delivered next month. And following initial deployments on the routes from Tel Aviv to London and New York, which will be launched in September and October 2017 respectively, El Al will then start flying its Dreamliner to Hong Kong.

Effective 18 March 2018, the Israeli flag carrier will deploy the 787-9 aircraft on its six weekly flights between Tel Aviv and Hong Kong, replacing the 777-200 aircraft that currently operates the route.

El Al has ordered nine 787-9s and seven smaller 787-8s, which will gradually replace its older long-haul aircraft including the 747s and 767s. The 787-9s will be able to seat 282 passengers in two cabins – 32 in business class and 250 in economy.

David Maimon, president & CEO of El Al, previously said that the Dreamliners would “take El Al to a new era, providing our passengers with an unparalleled flight experience”.

From November 2017, El AL will operate three-weekly nonstop flights o  Boeing 777-200 aircraft on Monday,F Wednesday and Friday to Miami International Airport.

El Al Miami picThe flight will depart from Ben-Gurion Airport at 1am and will land in Miami approximately 14 hours later at 8:05am local time.

The return flights from Miami on Monday and Wednesday will depart at 12 noon local time and arrive in Israel on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:45am local time.

A Saturday night flight to Tel Aviv will depart at 10:45pm local time and arrive in Israel on Sunday at 5:30pm.

EL AL president and CEO David Maimon said: “Introducing nonstop flights to Miami is an important step towards further expansion of EL AL’s route network in North America. Miami is an important destination on many levels: first and foremost, for the large Jewish community in the city, which until now has had to fly with a connecting flight. Second, Miami is a very popular vacation destination in its own right, thanks to its wonderful weather and fantastic beaches and other attractions as well as the many cruises that sail from the area. Now, with the opening of the new route, we believe that the city will become an attractive resort destination for Israeli families as well. In addition, it is important to remember that this is a key business destination in which leading international companies operate.”

Maimon adds: “Another significant consideration for the opening of the new route, beyond the importance of the destination in its own right is that Miami is also a gateway to Latin America – especially to the Caribbean Islands and Central and South America. This new route will offer Israelis flying to the USA and Latin America and for those tourists and business people from the area, the only nonstop flights between Tel Aviv-Miami.”

Qantas and El Al have formed a new partnership aimed at improving flight connectivity between Australia and Israel.

Under the new agreement, the national carriers will connect with other’s services via two key Asian transit points: Bangkok and Hong Kong. Qantas will place its code on El Al’s flights between Tel Aviv and the two Asian cities, while El Al will codeshare on Qantas’ flights linking Bangkok with Sydney, and Hong Kong with Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The partnership will also extend to South Africa, with both airlines codesharing on the other’s flights to Johannesburg – Qantas from Sydney and El Al from Tel Aviv.

The agreement was signed by Gareth Evans, CEO of Qantas International, David Maimon, president & CEO of El Al, in a ceremony attended by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu. It followed the signing of a new air service agreement between Australia and Israel.

“We’re really pleased to be teaming up with El Al and adding Tel Aviv to our network,” said Evans. “It’s a popular destination for the many Australians with family and friends in Israel, including a lot of Qantas frequent flyers who we know will welcome the option to book with us.

“The timing’s especially good when you think about the growing number of Australian companies doing business with Israel’s world-class technology and start-up sectors,” he added.

Maimon added that Australia is a “growing destination for Israelis, especially from the business and tourism segments”.

“To have the national carriers of both Israel and Australia further enhance cooperation will strengthen the ties between our countries and provide a seamless mode of travel for our passengers,” he commented.

Under the arrangement, premium passengers of both airlines will be offered access to airport lounges in the cities included in the codeshare, and frequent flyers will be able to earn miles. The joint flights will go on sale in the second half of 2017.
