Success leaves clues

Tony Robbins popularized the saying  “Success Leaves Clues”. I love this saying and it is so true.  If you want to be successful, one of the most important things to do is to have the courage to ASK other (successful) people how they achieved their success.  Then follow their success clues.   This is a classic move of a fearless entrepreneur.

Be intentional about asking for help

It is natural to fear rejection.  Don’t beat yourself about it.  But the best way to ward off rejection is to ensure that you are prepared.  You can do that by following the clues of success and emulating them.

I was recently asked in an interview who I have asked for help and who has guided my journey to success. I am very intentional about asking for help.

Who is your “board”?

You may not own your own company.  Even if you don’t, I would ask you who is providing you consistent direction in your life.

I have a “board of directors” of my life – personal friends from church that support me through thick and thin – business friends that can provide perspective on my decisions.

Then for my company I have a formal board, with a chairman that I greatly respect.  He is someone that I know I can count on to work through issues with me or when I have to make a decision on the spot and can’t talk to him first, he can dissect my decision and help me understand the implications and how I might have done it better (or just applaud what I did).I also run the Game Changer Network and also have an amazing board of directors for that organization.  I can call on any of my advisors at any time and I know that they will take my call, because I don’t abuse the privilege of having them in my life as that resource.

Next steps

If you do own your own company and especially if you are privately held or even family owned, and you do not have a board, ask yourself why. Having outside board members that can provide you not only clues as to how to be successful, they can actually provide specific direction.

Who do you look to and who do you ask for help?

Peace and Clarity of Vision

I should really make this #1, as peace and clarity of vision are what has gotten me to where I am. And I want to be clear that the definition of peace isn’t the lack of chaos, but being able to be peaceful in the midst of it.  And clarity of vision doesn’t mean that I know every step of the journey, but that I know the destination and can accept that there may be more than one way of getting there.

This week I celebrate 26 years of being in business. More significantly, I have surpassed the mark where I now have worked for myself longer than I worked for every other employer combined.  It is peace in the midst of chaos and clarity and focus on the end game that has gotten me here.

The formula for success

We have all been around people who believe that they suffer from bad luck or Murphy’s Law. Those people are not generally those that we would consider successful. Successful entrepreneurs, on the other hand, believe that the world is conspiring to help them achieve their goals.

I was recently interviewed on this topic and asked if this principle has played a part in my success in building connections, partnerships and ultimately reaching my goals?

My answer was this.  My principles go much deeper than an impersonal “law of nature” or the “law of reciprocity”.  My life verse comes from Psalm 139 that says that from the foundation of the earth, every day of my life was ordered.  I was created to be the very person that I am and to come across the paths of those that can help me achieve my goals, my hopes and my dreams.

The nice thing about that perspective is that I just have to wake up every day, and be guided by peace and clarity of vision for the day.  That doesn’t mean everything will go smoothly and that there will be no obstacles or no chaos.

When your path is flooded

Like this picture of the path that is flooded, I can take of my magic shoes (see yesterday’s blog) and walk on through.

I can walk through difficult situations (including a spectacular business failure resulting in significant personal loss) with complete assurance that there is something on the other side of those mountains and that I will be stronger by emerging on the other side.

I believe that people are attracted to people who are peaceful about their situation and who have that clarity of vision to know how to persevere, no matter the circumstance.

Do you have that peace and clarity of vision about your next step or your next venture?

Jack Canfield said “One of the reasons most people don’t get what they want out of life is that they fail to decide and define in clear detail what it actually is that they want.”.

I would say it a different way.  You can’t fearlessly pursue what you haven’t clearly articulated.

In clearly defining and stating the things you want, there is a fine balance between reinforcing your goals in everything you do and appearing self-centered and materialistic.  This is a battle that I have fought since I was very young, as my parents taught me early on that I could do and be anything that I wanted and I actually believed it.  Nothing wrong with that, right?   Well, much to my surprise, that same confidence that is the foundation of my fearlessness was often misinterpreted by others as arrogance.  That was very frustrating for me, as I thought that the only way to change that perception was to not appear confident and I couldn’t legitimately behave that way.

I have learned over the years that it is essential as a part of this journey to show your heart to others and not just your determination and drive.  Although completely counterintuitive, I believe that vulnerability is actually strength.   Hence the transparency of this very blog and of my radio show.

Back to knowing where you are going.  For me, if what I do only produces incremental change, it is likely that I will get bored with the endeavor.  I want to be a part of changing the world and having significant impact (aka, Purpose).

I have always been an iconoclast, breaking the mould and being dissatisfied with the status quo. That has been true with my various roles when I was still a part of Corporate America and it was equally true when I consulted.

Now that I am building technology for the travel industry, I am solving big problems that have been ignored by my industry and then am giving back of my profits to charity.  As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog about Purpose, trait #2, I call that changing the world, one trip at a time.

I may have to wait longer than most to see the fruits of my labors, but I know that when I do “arrive” that the journey will have been worth it.  Long term, I want to be the CEO of a well funded company, based in Tampa.  In the short term, I know that I want to fund what I am doing on my own, without obligation to outside investors.  That came out of my experience losing $6m of an investor’s money to a spectacular failure in my first technology company.

This time it is all on me.  (see Trait #1)

Gaping Void is one of my favorite sites, as it has amazing art that tells a story.  Every couple of days, they send out a new piece of art to their email list.  So not only are they forward thinking artists, but they are solid marketers, allowing users to post their images on social media, as well as purchasing the art in various sizes, suitable for framing.

The story of today’s piece of art is that success seems like child’s play.  You can order this print on Gaping Void’s site.

The message on this piece plays right into my new blog series.

The series is based on the 25 Principles of Success by Jack Canfield.  Jack  and I first met, albeit electronically, when we co-authored a book called Bootstrap Business.

From the experiences that I recounted in my chapter in this book about entrepreneurial spirit, I share the details about the importance of taking full responsibility for the results you achieve

Good and bad – a fearless entrepreneur doesn’t blame or hide behind their upbringing, their financial situation, education or social sphere for their success or otherwise.  In short, they make it look easy, like child’s play.

How did this principal play its part in my own success?

For me, asking about taking responsibility for results is a little like asking about breathing.  We can’t exist without taking in oxygen and getting rid of carbon dioxide.

Likewise as an entrepreneur, our actions produce results and those actions include leading others toward a goal.  It is how we stay alive as an entrepreneur.  If we tried to reverse the breathing process, taking in carbon dioxide and getting rid of oxygen, we would die.  Likewise, if we are not effectively leading others toward our goal and seeing the link between those actions and results, our businesses will die.

Take a minute today and think about whether you have taken responsibility not only for the good, but also for the bad things that have happened to you – whether in life or in your business.  Now think about what would happen if you share responsibility for the good things with your team – your executive village – that help make you successful.  And what would happen if you stop shifting blame on others.

Responsibility is power.  Go and get some.

Today we begin a new year.  And tomorrow or Tuesday, most go back to work.

Some may be looking forward to 2017 and what it will bring and others, even as you contemplate going back to work are actively looking for your next opportunity, unsure if you can manage even one more day in your current role. Others of you may be what I lovingly call “in between successes”.

No matter what your state of play, I recommend that you bookmark Travel Daily USA and the Executive Village and pay attention to this next series, the 25 Traits of a Fearless Entrepreneur.

These articles are short and easily digestible in 5 minutes a day.  Whether you are in corporate life or you are an entrepreneur or working for one, this series is for you.

Entrepreneurs by definition are fearless.  That is not to say that we are not concerned about the future, but there is a certain energy that we possess that allows us to take that step off what looks to be a cliff, but is actually the portal to opportunity.

Join us tomorrow.

The Honourable Order of International Hotel General Managers (HOIHGm) has officially launched from its first regional headquarters in Dubai.

The international organisation – dedicated exclusively to the hotel general management community – is designed to raise the profile of hotel GMs, while providing a range of professional and personal membership benefits, such as portable healthcare and insurance options.

Membership is open to all hotel GMs, those who have previously served in the position, owner/operators, as well as retirees and young professionals on the career path to becoming a GM, according to the order.

HOIHGm was founded by Leon Larkin, who said during his career “I came to realise that there was something significant missing for GMs on a collective scale, in some ways similar to what the concierges have with Les Clefs d’Or”.

“Before now, GMs have had nowhere to go for independent assistance or support, both in general and particularly in times of need,” he continued.

“HOIHGm will provide a thread of continuity and range of benefits which reflect the challenges our colleagues face throughout their careers and beyond – the number one incentive being an elective portable healthcare insurance plan for themselves and their families.”

Larkin is supported in his role as president by an international board of governors comprising 11 alumni from the global hospitality industry.

Later this year, HOIHGm will host its debut World Congress in Dubai on the topic of ‘Hotel Security in Today’s World’ and feature awards such as ‘International Hotel General Manager of the Year’ and a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’.
