Accor is bringing the Fairmont brand to Ireland with the signing of the historic Carton House. In partnership with the owner, Belmullet Hospitality Group, a US-based investor in luxury property, the hotel will now be managed by Fairmont.

Located just 20 minutes from Dublin in Maynooth, County Kildare, it is one of Ireland’s most historic country houses. The hotel is currently undergoing a multi-million-euro refurbishment to bring the property up to the globally recognised Fairmont brand standards.

“Oldest Fairmont property.”

The refurbishment is expected to be completed by the end of 2020 when the hotel will be rebranded as Fairmont Carton House. The Carton estate dates back to 1176, then part of the Maynooth estate belonging to the FitzGerald family, one of the most influential families in Irish history. The house itself was built in 1739, making it the oldest Fairmont property in a global collection famed for its grand dame hotels.

Thomas Dubaere, chief operating officer in northern Europe at Accor said: “Fairmont Carton House will join the ranks of the iconic Savoy in London and Fairmont St Andrews in Scotland and the recently signed Fairmont Windsor Park, becoming the first Fairmont hotel in Ireland.”

The number of APAC properties run by AccorHotels reached one thousand when the group announced the opening of Pullman Tokyo Tamachi in Japan today — putting the company on track for its target of opening one hotel every single day by 2020.

The milestone represented by Pullman Tokyo Tamachi’s (above) launch means that for Accor, who have been on scarfing up acquisitions and opening new locations at a remarkable rate for some time now, the APAC region now represents more than 30% of rooms and 51% of the company’s pipeline across the planet.

“A new hotel every second day by 2020 [in APAC] and one hotel per day globally.”

Accor’s current growth is clocked at two openings in APAC a week but that just the start with the company striving to drastically up the rate of global openings, as Michael Issenberg, CEO for APAC at AccorHotels, said: “For the first half of 2018, 72% of global room openings for the group were in the Asia Pacific. We currently open, on average, a new hotel in the Asia Pacific every three days, but our goal is to move this to a new hotel every second day by 2020 [in APAC] and one hotel per day globally.”

“Enormous potential of the Asia Pacific tourism market”

The Accor portfolio now includes respected brands such as Raffles, Orient Express, Fairmont, Banyan Tree, Delano, Mondrian, SLS, Swissôtel, and Mövenpick, with no sign of stopping the company plans to open and add more brands, following the most recent purchase – the USD 1.2 billion acquisition of Mantra Group in Australia – with an estate of 138 hotels in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Bali.

Issenberg went on to add that Accor Asia Pacific will continue its rapid expansion as the group looks to transform its business model to become a full-service operator in travel, lifestyle and digital innovation. “We are very excited about what the future holds and our world-class distribution platform and loyalty program will help ensure we fully realise the enormous potential of the Asia Pacific tourism market.”

Never one to stay out of the travel news cycle for long, AccorHotels, who recently announced the purchase of table reservation system ResDiary, has now released news of another smart strategic move – this time signing a MoU with Chinese heavyweight Ctrip.

The MoU will give the Chinese heavyweight’s 300 million registered users access to Accor’s huge catalogue of ‘personalised experiences’ from across the company’s global portfolio.

This list includes names like Raffles, Sofitel Legend, Fairmont, SO/, Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery by Sofitel, Swissôtel, onefinestay and 25hours Hotel, as well as Novotel, Mercure, Mama Shelter and Adagio and the economy brands JO&JOE, ibis, ibis Styles, ibis budget and the regional Grand Mercure,The Sebel and hotelF1.

“We are proud to be a privileged hospitality partner of Ctrip”

“We are pleased to take the partnership with Ctrip to the next level and proud to be a privileged hospitality partner of Ctrip,” said Sebastien Bazin, chairman and CEO of AccorHotels, “Our role is to provide hospitality expertise to all segments of the market.

“We want to offer Chinese guests our know-how and service skills in order to become their preferred hospitality group. AccorHotels will also launch its own program to train and certify at least 250 hotels by 2020 on Chinese Optimum Standards.”

Raffles Hotel, Singapore

“These properties will be trained to answer major Chinese guests’ expectations, aligned with our strong ambition on this market. As China’s preeminent travel agency, Ctrip, with its over 300 million registered users is definitely a strategic partner of AccorHotels in the region,” Bazin concluded.

In addition to being  a benefit to the vast swathes of Ctrip’s users, the agreement marks the beginning of a relationship of ‘deeper cooperation’ between the two companies, which will concentrate on developing boosting the prominence of Accor’s brands in the region, building a flagship store for AccorHotels, joint development of the pair’s loyalty programmes and cooperation on IT.

Hotel – Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam

“We are very excited to be deepening our partnership with AccorHotels. With the ever-growing number of outbound Chinese travellers, we are always looking for ways to provide better services for our customers and with the deepened AccorHotels relationship, we are able to offer magnified experiences and property choices,” said Jane Sun, CEO of Ctrip. “With the diverse range of hotels offered by AccorHotels, Ctrip customers will have access to a vast majority of its hotels globally.”

Ho ho… but who? Fairmont The Palm, the luxury resort on Palm Jumeirah has a global mission at hands: to find the best resident Santa for its fast approaching festive season.

The North Pole is inevitably a little busy this year, so the resort is looking for a Santa from another destination to fill the usual suspect’s snow-covered boots. They have released a global social media competition, where one lucky person will win the opportunity of a life time.

Required for all typical Santa roles and responsibilities, Fairmont The Palm is looking for the crème de la crème of Santas, one that goes above and beyond the usual Christmas cheer.

The resort has made a list, that they will be checking twice, of the ideal traits and key skills required for the role in the form of a job description that all applicants must adhere to. Key skillsets include: having a jolly disposition, must be compatible with elves, must have a certain sized waistline, needs a minimum length for his white beard and of course, must ooze festive flair…

The resort is asking for global applicants who feel they fit the dedicated job description, to upload a 30 second video application tagging #MyDubaiSanta #FairmontThePalm to Instagram or Facebook by October 30 2017, stating why they would make the perfect Santa in their full Santa outfit. The winner will be selected shortly after.

The chosen Santa will win an all-inclusive trip to Dubai, staying at Fairmont The Palm for three weeks between 5th and 26th December, where in-between a few hours of Santa work per day, he and a guest of his choice will enjoy a memorable stay with a return flight from their home destination.

Could this be the best job in the world?

AccorHotels has reached a significant Asian development milestone with the opening of its 200th property in China.

The landmark was achieved with the launch of the Fairmont Chengdu, which is located on Tianfu Middle Avenue, close to the location where a metro station will connect to Chengdu’s new airport, Tianfu International.

“The opening of Fairmont Chengdu signifies AccorHotels’ 200th hotel in Greater China and celebrates the first Fairmont hotel opening following the FRHI acquisition last year,” said Michel Molliet, AccorHotels’ chief operating officer for Greater China.

“The strategic location of Fairmont in the fast-changing city of Chengdu symbolises an important growth strategy for the group’s luxury brand development in the China market.”

The new property features 336 rooms and suites, 11 meeting rooms and four restaurants, including a top floor F&B outlet that will be one of the highest in the city. There will also be a spa, indoor pool and fitness centre.

AccorHotels secured the US$2.7 billion acquisition of Fairmont’s parent company, FRHI, in 2016.

Overview of Azerbaijan

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan is keen to boost its tourist numbers from this region.

This is evident from key initiatives carried out such as regional roadshows and familiarization trips to showcase the destination.

Industry reports suggest that tourism from this region to Azerbaijan is slowly and steadily, carving a niche for itself among residents and locals alike.

Plans from the ministry are also in place to conduct more roadshows in other GCC countries to increase awareness on the destination. An overview of the destination suggests that Azerbaijan has all the necessary ingredients of a tourist-friendly country: people, rich cultural, historic and religious diversity, natural scenery, halal foods, and many more.

These factors work well as an option for a summer getaway from the Middle East. It is to be known that 9 out of the 11 world climatic zones are found in this country, which is just a two and a half -hour flight from Dubai.

The flight options from Dubai are available with flyDubai. Azerbaijan borders the Caspian Sea thus showcasing a coastline which extends over 800 km. This is ideal for beach enthusiasts.

Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital is a modern-day cosmopolitan city filled with architecture, landscape design, alleys and cafes with a contemporary European feel. Millions of tourists visit Azerbaijan every year to visit the UNESCO heritage sites or bask in the unique medical spa therapy (Naftalan oil has healing qualities having no analogue in the world) and the mud volcanoes (More than 350 out of the 800 mud volcanoes are found in Azerbaijan).

There are several activities on offer such as fishing, hunting and other activities for adventure in Shahdag, Guba and Gabala. Azerbaijan also boasts eight national parks.

The country offers safety and security with a growing number of hotels; current statistics show more than 500 hotels in service. The most popular hotels in Baku are the likes of Four Seasons, Fairmont, JW Marriott, Hilton, Jumeirah and Kempinski.

Accessibility to Azerbaijan from the GCC region is easy for nationals from UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia who can get their visas on arrival. Other nationalities can apply for visas online in advance of travel, and get them stamped on arrival at the airport.

AccorHotels has agreed to acquire FRHI, the company that operates Fairmont, Raffles and Swissotel.

Under the terms of the deal, AccorHotels will issue 46.7 million new shares and pay US$840 million in cash to the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) and Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Holding Company (KHC), valuing FRHI at US$2.9 billion.

The acquisition will add 155 hotels and resorts to AccorHotels’ portfolio, including famous properties like The Raffles Hotel Singapore, The Savoy in London, The Plaza in New York and the Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai.

“This is an outstanding opportunity to add three prestigious brands – Fairmont, Raffles and Swissôtel – to our portfolio, and a great step forward for AccorHotels,” said Sébastien Bazin, chairman & CEO of AccorHotels. “It offers us robust and global leadership in luxury hotels, a key segment in terms of geographic reach, growth potential and profitability, for long term value creation.

“This major acquisition demonstrates the group’s agility in a fast-changing industry and will allow us to more effectively support our guests, clients and hotel owners. Through it, we are positioning ourselves as a key player in the current industry consolidation process while maintaining substantial leeway to implement our transformation plan,” he added.

FRHI’s portfolio covers 34 countries across five continents, and comprises more than 56,000 rooms. The company also employs more than 45,000 people.

AccorHotels said the acquisition was made to improve the balance of its portfolio and broaden its geographic footprint in the luxury segment. The company’s existing luxury brands include Sofitel, MGallery and Pullman, but it has traditionally been stronger in the lower tiers, with its large collections of economy ibis hotels and midscale Novotels.

This acquisition also continues the recent consolidation of the hotel industry; China’s Jin Jiang International has already acquired Louvre and Plateno hotels this year, making it one of the biggest global hotel groups, and last month Marriott announced plans to buy Starwood for US$12.2bn.

In 2011, AccorHotels acquired Australia’s Mirvac in a US$254m deal.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is now providing a place for bees to rest their wings with the introduction of its first pollinator bee hotel at Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York.

Supported by a partnership with Burt’s Bees and its annual ‘Wild for Bees’ campaign, Fairmont will develop five sustainable bee hotels – four in Toronto and one in Guelph – with the first launching at the Fairmont Royal York.

This Toronto pilot programme, which Fairmont plans to roll out at more hotels next year, is designed to provide nesting materials to attract and protect lost and solitary bees by replicating their natural nesting sites. This allows the bees to breed, lay eggs and seek protection from predators.

“Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is extremely excited about the addition of our new pollinator bee hotel and we look forward providing these pint-sized ‘guests’ with the five-star treatment they so deserve for keeping our ecosystems resilient,” said Alexandra Blum, vice president of public relations for FRHI Hotels & Resorts.

“The Fairmont brand has a long history of being a sustainability pioneer, and this project to protect pollinator bees is an extension of our ongoing efforts to support bees of all kinds, including nurturing honeybees with hives at more than 20 of our properties around the world.”

The Fairmont Royal York’s rooftop garden already houses an apiary of six honeybee hives, which produce more than 360kg of honey each year. The honey is then used in the hotel’s kitchens.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has unveiled plans to launch its first hotel in Malaysia.

The luxury hotel company has penned a management contract with Cititower Sdn Bhd for the Fairmont Kuala Lumpur – a new-build hotel set to open its doors in 2017.

The 62-storey hotel will be located in the central KLCC area of the Malaysian capital, which is also home to the Petronas Twin Towers. It will form part of a new mixed-used development including the hotel and a high-rise office tower, connected to each other via the existing six-storey Suria KLCC shopping complex.

“Fairmont Kuala Lumpur is an important milestone for both our brand and FHRI,” said Jennifer Fox, president of Fairmont Raffles Hotels International (FHRI).

“It’s a dynamic new destination for Fairmont and is our company’s first hotel in Malaysia, an influential and growing market that we feel is of strategic importance. We’re very excited to be entering Kuala Lumpur, a key gateway city in the region, and remain focused on expanding the Fairmont brand in Southeast Asia and other leading destinations globally,” she added.

The new property will offer 750 rooms, six F&B outlets, a swimming pool, health club, spa and 2,787m² of conference and banqueting space.

The project is being designed by Pelli Clarke Architects, which worked on the original Petronas Twin Towers project and the International Financial Centre (IFC) in Hong Kong.

Fairmont KL becomes the latest hotel signed by Fairmont, as it expands its reach across Asia Pacific. Other new projects are set to open in Chengdu, Jakarta, Bali, Taiyuan, Changsha and Hangzhou over the next three years, doubling the brand’s regional portfolio.

Fairmont has opened a new hotel in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing.

The 359-room Fairmont Nanjing is located on the upper floors of the 62-storey Jin Ao Tower, overlooking the Yangtze River. All rooms will include 46-inch flatscreen TVs, high-speed internet access and bathrooms with rain showers, while there is also a range of Fairmont Gold rooms and suites – Fairmont’s club room concept.

Hotel facilities will include seven F&B outlets, including a restaurant located on the 60th floor and Nanjing’s first rooftop-bar, which is decked out with cabanas, a jacuzzi, music bar and a manmade beach. There is also a 1,120m² Willow Stream Spa with seven treatment rooms, an indoor mineral pool, saunas and steam rooms, plus more than 2,500m² of function space, including a 1,200-pax capacity ballroom.

“The city of Nanjing is one of the fastest growing travel destinations in China and we are delighted to open Fairmont Nanjing at such an opportune time,” said the hotel’s GM, Martin Leclerc.

“The hotel will be part of a new luxury residential and commercial development area, and leveraging on Fairmont’s distinct brand of service excellence and commitment to delivering authentic experiences, we will play a role in helping to put this area on the map for discerning luxury travellers.”

Fairmont Nanjing becomes the brand’s fourth hotel in China, following properties in Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Kunshan. But Fairmont plans to open at least three new Chinese properties in the coming years, including the Fairmont Chengdu & Residences (2015), Fairmont Taiyuan (2016) and Fairmont Hangzhou (2017).

The famous Peace Hotel in Shanghai, which is now managed by Fairmont, has unveiled a new rooftop terrace area, including two private dining rooms.

Overlooking the city’s Bund area and Huangpu River, the new roof terrace is a venue in its own right, but also now contains two new private dining rooms that are likely to become among the most sought-after entertainment venues in the city.

The 35m² England Room and 25m² Scotland Room feature high ceilings and are classically decorated with dark wood panelling and leather chairs, reminiscent of an English gentleman’s club.

Adjacent to the roof terrace is the Nine Heaven Hall, one of the hotel’s popular original venues in the 1920s, which has now been restored. It offers panoramic views of the river.

Finally, the hotel has added another meeting room on its mezzanine level – the Thames Room. This 110m² space overlooks Dian Chi Road and Huangpu River, and can accommodate up to 50 people.

Swissôtel and Fairmont have teamed up with a conservation group to pledge a shark fin-free Chinese New Year.

Two of the company’s hotels in Singapore, Fairmont Singapore and Swissôtel The Stamford are working with Singapore-based marine conservation group, Project Fin, to spread awareness about the damaging shark fin trade among the local community.

This campaign includes a major social media drive, through which Facebook users are requested to change their profile pictures to that a paper shark. In just a month since its launch, the campaign already garnered over 900 Facebook shares.

In addition, local wildlife volunteers will join hands with hotel staff to hand out car stickers bearing the campaign picture, as part of a Chinese New Year giveaway bag including the more traditional red packets and oranges.

Fairmont and Swissôtel have already removed shark fin dishes from their restaurant menus.

Fairmont’s agent rewards scheme; new GDS code for Rendezvous and Marriott plots 4,000 hotels.

Fairmont doubles agent rewards

Fairmont is offering double points for its Famous Agents awards programme at selected hotels. Agents can earn two points per room booked at a qualifying hotel when booked between 1 July and 30 September 2012, with gift cards available from 25 points and room nights earned from 50 points. In addition, any agent that actualises 10 combined room nights at selected hotels during the period will be entered into prize draws to win iPads, toiletry gift sets and a seven-night B&B stay.

New GDS code for Rendezvous

Rendezvous Hospitality Group (RHG) has introduced a new GDS chain code. In a phased roll-out, the new RP code will replace the existing WV code for Rendezvous Hotels in Melbourne, Singapore and Shanghai from 20 June. Then a week later, the RP code will replace EP for Rendezvous Hotels in Port Douglas, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Auckland, Christchurch and The Marque Hotels in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth.

Marriott to reach 4,000 hotels by 2014

Marriott International will reach a portfolio of 4,000 hotels in 90 countries by the end of 2014, the company has said. In a presentation at its first analyst and investor meeting in China, the US hotel giant said that this growth will be led by the company’s Chinese expansion, which will see it increase to 100 hotels in nearly 40 markets in China by year-end 2014.

“China is a fitting place to present our tremendous global growth story and discuss our outstanding financial prospects. Even today, China is our second most important market after North America, representing roughly 5% of total fees. On average we expect to open a hotel a month in this country over the next three years,” commented Marriott’s President & CEO, Arne Sorenson.

The company currently has 115,000 hotel rooms in its development pipeline, and could open up to 105,000 of these by the end of 2014, not including the planned acquisition of US hotel group Gaylord.

The world’s second smallest country is striving to become more than a hideout for racing drivers, finds Simon Willmore

We gaze out from the rooftop poolside of the Fairmont, at the stretch of road winding dramatically downhill past the hotel car park and towards to the seafront. To the uninitiated, this would be an uninteresting view of a traffic thoroughfare, but this particular expanse of tarmac is arguably one of the most famous street corners in the world. For here, where Avenue des Spélugues turns sharply into Avenue Princesse Grâce, is the site of – as it’s known in the industry – the Fairmont Hairpin on the Monaco Grand Prix circuit, the most demanding corner on the entire Formula 1 schedule.

Even for those who aren’t fans of racing (myself included), it’s still fascinating looking at one of the scenes that has made – and continues to make – sporting history, especially because Monaco is so different to other F1 venues. Here, in the Monte Carlo neighbourhood, the fearless drivers duke it out on the city streets themselves, and so for locals, a visit to the shops on any of the 364 other days of the year means driving on the hallowed racetrack itself.

That’s not to say that fast cars are all that the principality has to offer. Of course, a nice set of wheels is a huge part of the Monaco ‘scene’ – not just the Formula 1 supercars, but the rows of shops displaying  Lamborghinis, Ferraris and Bentleys – but the country also has a rich history, a brimming leisure and tourism industry, and, now more than ever, an extensive corporate clientele. State of the art event facilities like the Grimaldi Forum boast all the space and technology required to host a top of the range international symposium, and, with two-hour flights from all major European cities, even a short break for a departmental meeting or company seminar is a real possibility.

All the major hotels now feature conference facilities as impressive as the sea view rooms,  as the country strives to become a contender for business beyond the stereotypical ‘champagne and yachts’ market. Naturally, the bubbly and the boats are still there en masse, with some of the most striking pieces of nautical kit on the planet shored up in the harbour, but the people at SBM (Société des Bains de Mer), a publicly traded company behind most of Monaco’s tourism facilities, are racing into the business market like a speedboat through the ocean.

Promoting MICE facilities along with the existing portfolio of famed hotels, spas, casinos and restaurants, the development team behind the country’s main source of income are now aiming to capture another section of the market, to maintain Monaco’s appeal as a destination throughout the season, not just somewhere for summertime cigars, brandy and roulette.

The major players in the hotel industry include:

Fairmont – The 24-hour Saphir lounge bar, award-winning Willow Spa and rooftop pool that looks out over the sea in one direction and that stretch of road in the other means that the Fairmont has the facilities to match the perfect location for F1 fans. It’s no surprise that George Lucas stays here and that TV crews often use the Fairmont’s balcony for filming the race. The enormous hotel has 602 rooms and suites, which are bright yet cosy and well-appointed, with a large flat-screen TV and plenty of space for a writing desk, armchair and king-size bed. If you’re feeling lucky, the Fairmont has its own large casino, and there’s a shopping arcade where you can fritter away all the money you’ve just won. www.fairmont.com/montecarlo

Le Méridien – The hotel, again in prime position, has a great restaurant, Muse, with a sea-view buffet lunch. The doors, advertised as ‘transformation portals’, have vibrant designs and are supposed to symbolise the beginning of the relaxation process during visitors’ stays. It’s also the only hotel in the country to have its own private beach – surely a plus point for former guest Jennifer Lopez. www.lemeridienmontecarlo.com

Novotel – The recently opened property, set slightly away from the sea and closer to the hillside, boasts a fresh and modern interior with colour décor. The disco-style light-up floor provides a funky yet classy backdrop for a drink before moving downstairs to the poolside restaurant. Families are well catered for with a kids’ library and video games area and children under 16 stay for free. http://www.novotel.com

Hôtel Métropole – Upon entering, the enormous (fake) cherry tree in reception demonstrates the flair and grandeur of the Metropole. The restaurants, both from multi-Michelin starred Joel Robuchon, offer Mediterranean cuisine served at an open kitchen or Japanese fusion food at the fantastic Yoshi. Rooms shine with Belle Époque grandeur, even down to the light switch units which have up to nine separate switches for various parts of the room. www.metropole.com

Hôtel Hermitage – Another Belle Époque masterpiece, the Hermitage features all the stunning original architecture of the era, including painstakingly painted ceilings and intricate glass domes, some designed by Gustave Eiffel, of ‘Tower’ fame. The famous Thermes Marins spa calls the Hermitage home, and the gorgeous suites overlook the harbour so if the décor doesn’t make your jaw drop, the yachts on show will. www.hotelhermitagemontecarlo.com

Monte Carlo Bay – Found right at the eastern tip of Monaco, on the border with France – indeed the nearby Monte Carlo Country Club is actually in another country – this hotel features a bright airy décor and more-than-double-height ceilings in the bar on the seafront. Most of the rooms, some of them duplexes, come with a view of the Mediterranean. www.montecarlobay.com

Columbus – Formerly owned by David Coulthard, the Columbus is set away from the madding crowd near the Roseraie Princesse Grâce gardens. Perhaps it’s this peace and quiet that has helped the numerous F1 drivers that stay here to concentrate – the winner of the Monaco Grand Prix for the last four years running has stayed here. It’s also close to the Monaco Heliport for arriving in style. www.columbushotels.com

Simon flew to Nice with bmi, British Midland International (www.flybmi.com), which fly direct to Nice from London Heathrow. Flights are twice daily Monday to Saturday and daily on Sunday. Economy fares are available from £94 return and business class fares from £158 return including all taxes and charges. See www.visitmonaco.com for more details.

Kirker Holidays offers a ‘Monaco Passport’ which includes flights to Nice with bmi return in the low season (November –March), plus complimentary return helicopter transfers to Monaco; hotel transfer from heliport; three- nights BB at the 4 Star Columbus Hotel, plus 10 complimentary museum passes per person from £399 per person subject to availability.
