Tourism Fiji, Fiji Airways and Trip.com Group signed a three-year strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focusing on cooperating on the promotion of outbound tourism to Fiji and the development of its exposure in Greater China market and promote the ‘Where Happiness Comes Naturally’ Fiji travel.

The MOU was signed at Trip.com Group’s headquarter in Shanghai. The Ceremony was attended by Brent Hill, Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Fiji, Christina Templin, Head of Global Marketing of Fiji Airways and Edison Chen, VP, Destination Marketing & Strategy, International Public Relations of Trip.com Group.

The new agreement will see three parties work together on the promotion of Fiji as a destination, utilising Trip.com Group’s strength as a travel marketing leader and operator of leading global travel brands. Together, the three organisations will collaborate on knowledge sharing to inform how they can best contribute and drive the travel recovery.

This cooperation aims to support and stimulate tourism recovery of the destination and encourage Chinese travellers to visit Fiji as China announced the resumption of outbound tourism in January. Over the next three years, the parties will collaborate on travel marketing initiatives, product expansion and leverage data insights, to fully optimise the travel experience for tourists in Fiji.

Brent Hill, Tourism Fiji CEO said: “We are thrilled to announce the strengthening of our long-standing relationship with Trip.com Group, a leading travel service provider in China, through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in partnership with Fiji Airways. China was Fiji’s fourth largest market prior to the pandemic, our collaborative approach with Ctrip and Fiji Airways will undoubtedly contribute to driving more visitor arrivals from the Chinese market.”

“With the reopening of China’s border, we have seen a marked increase in outbound travel-related bookings and searches in the past three months. In line with our ‘local focus, global vision’ strategy, we have initiated a series of recovery sales activities and campaigns to stimulate overseas travel demands in the Chinese market. We look forward to collaborating with Tourism Fiji and Fiji Airways to leverage our resources and data insights to boost Fiji tourism development,” commented Edison Chen, VP, Destination Marketing & Strategy, International Public Relations of Trip.com Group.

As the global tourism industry is recovering, the three parties will work together to best capture pent-up demand by developing strategic campaigns aimed at promoting traffic and tourists to explore Fiji.

As China announced the resumption of outbound tourism and global tourism is recovering, the growth of multiple travel business lines of Trip.com Grhashave been showing strong momentum. Since the first quarter of 2023, despite transportation capacity constraints, outbound travel bookings on Ctrip, a sub-brand of Trip.com Group, have recovered to more than 40% of their pre-pandemic levels and increased by more than 300% compared with the same period last year.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, overall air ticket bookings on Trip.com, an international sub-brand of Trip.com Group, increased by more than 80% year on year, while air ticket bookings in the Asia-Pacific region increased by 300% year-on-year. With the recovery of the capacity of international flights, Chinese outbound travel will gradually pick up in the second quarter.

Starting from April 1, 2023, Fiji Airways will have two flights a week between Hong Kong and Nadi, and will increase to three flights a week by June, making it more convenient for Chinese tourists to visit Fiji. Coupled with the convenient transit service and full-equipped airport facilities at the Hong Kong airport, even a connecting flight can be a highlight of the journey.

Fiji, as one of the first pilot outbound group tour destinations, has welcomed the first Chinese group tourists to return to Fiji in April. International travellers to Fiji no longer need to provide COVID-19 vaccination certificates and take out travel insurance. Chinese passport holders (the passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the expected stay) can start visa-free and quarantine-free travel with a maximum stay of up to 4 months.

Tourism Fiji launched a new brand campaign to attract more foreign visitors earlier this year. The new brand campaign themed “Where Happiness Comes Naturally” is refreshed from the previous “Where Happiness Finds You.” Emphasize with a lot of happiness to offer, this new brand showcases the rich and diverse cultures and traditions in Fiji.

Canberra locals will soon be able to take advantage of direct Fiji Airways flights to the capital city of Nadi, with connections available to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver.

On Friday, 14 April, authorities from Canberra Airport, the ACT government, and the Fijian government will gather with the Qantas partner and Oneworld Connect member to officially launch the flights, which will use a Boeing 737 MAX with eight business class recliners and 162 economy seats.

In honour of the event, on Friday morning, one of Fiji Airways’ Boeing 737 MAX planes will fly from Nadi to Canberra and back again in the evening.

The opening ceremony will unveil full details of Fiji Airways’ schedule, including the frequency with which flights operate.

The airline is trying to entice ACT locals with the lure of a tropical vacation, especially in light of the approaching winter in Australia.

On Viti Levu’s western shore, Nadi is the principal entry point to Fiji’s various resorts and tourist attractions.

The 333 islands that make up this country are rich with exploration, adventure, and leisure options, from scuba and snorkelling among beautiful corals to relaxing on secluded beaches in the sun.

Fiji Airways’ return to Canberra marks the welcome return of international services to the nation’s capital, joining the airline’s existing routes to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide.

Before the pandemic, direct flights to Canberra were offered by Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines; since then, Canberra Airport and the ACT government have been working on getting these and other international airlines to start service.

Fiji Airways has introduced a brand-new unbundled price model that will provide travellers with more options and flexibility in economy class.

The fresh concept, dubbed “Fly Your Way,” lets customers choose from four categories of travel, including “Light,” “Value,” “Comfort,” and “Plus.”

While the flexibility offered by each category varies, all options include in-flight meals and drinks, entertainment, and carry-on baggage (7kgs).

Value additions include ticket change and cancellation options, priority and checked luggage, seat preference, and more.

The Fly Your Way branded tickets, which go on sale on 3 March 2023, can be booked via the Fiji Airways website or a travel agent.

The introduction of the new pricing concept coincided with Fiji Airways releasing the findings of a poll that revealed Australians placed the most importance on the ability to change or cancel a reservation.

The survey, commissioned by Fiji Airways, found that 57% of Australians wanted more pricing flexibility, 29% wanted the ability to change their reservation, and 28% wanted refundable tickets.

One in six (16%) travellers valued checked luggage above all else, and one in ten (10%) prioritised pre-selecting their meals, according to a poll of more than 500 Australians.

79% of Australians indicated they intended to go overseas in 2023.

Andre Viljoen, Managing Director and CEO of Fiji Airways, said the Fly Your Way concept gave passengers precisely what they wanted.

“Our research revealed that the ability to change and refund airline tickets is the most critical element for Australian travellers right now, and with our new ‘Fly Your Way’ fare options, passengers can book additional flexibility when travelling with Fiji Airways,” he added.

“Whether travelling light for a weekend trip or bringing the entire family for an annual vacation, Fly Your Way provides the best value for money for all passengers.”

“Our customers have different needs when they travel, whether for business or pleasure and with this new approach, we provide them the option of selecting the product that best meets their needs.”

Over 80% of Australians want to travel this year, 40% are taking their families, 29% are going on vacation with their loved ones, and 17% are doing it alone, as revealed by Viljoen.

One in seven (14% of all travellers) will be vacationing with a large group of friends, while 8% will be on business.

Last Monday, the government of Fiji announced that visitors from outside the country would no longer be required to produce evidence of having been vaccinated against COVID-19 or to have purchased travel insurance.

Fiji Airways has announced the introduction of services to the popular tourist destinations of Tonga and Samoa, as well as new advantages for tabua club members.

The airline also announced that it had won the APEX Passenger Choice Award for best food and beverage in the South Pacific.

Fiji Airways now offers three weekly overnight flights to Samoa from Nadi, Fiji, and two weekly overnight flights to Tonga in response to growing demand from Australians booking South Pacific holidays.

With the addition of overnight flights, Australians now have more alternatives for reaching the tropical paradise of Fiji and the islands of Samoa and Tonga. From Nadi, Fiji Airways presently offers up to seven weekly flights to Samoa and up to five weekly flights to Tonga.

“As we approach the peak travel season over the holidays, we are excited to offer Australians more connections to South Pacific destinations with new overnight services to Tonga and Samoa from Nadi,” said Andre Viljoen, managing director and chief executive officer of Fiji Airways, about the airline’s decision to expand its services.

Most passengers flying to Tonga and Samoa originate in Sydney, and the performance has exceeded projections.

We are witnessing an increase in demand for flights from Brisbane to Tonga in December and Melbourne to Samoa in January.

It wasn’t until August 1st, 2022, that international traveller could again enter the tropical paradises of Samoa and Tonga, which had been closed to them since March 2020. Starting in September 2022, all you need to enter Tonga from Samoa is confirmation of vaccination; you may now go there without any restrictions.

Fiji Airways’ expanding network of destinations and services, which currently includes Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Singapore, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Canada, will grow to include Tonga and Samoa on November 25th, 2022, with the addition of additional flights to both destinations.

Fiji Airways will add Canada to its list of destinations in November, bolstering its North American offering.

Beginning 25 November 2022, the airline will operate two weekly flights between its Nadi base and Vancouver, using an Airbus A330 aircraft.

The route will make the carrier’s fourth North American airport service. Fiji Airways currently flies to Honolulu, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

“Canada represents a new market with enormous potential for tourism, trade, and, of course, reuniting Fijian families,” said CEO Andre Viljoen in a statement. “Approximately 80,000 Fijians in Canada have not seen their loved ones in two years and are eager to fly home.” Fiji Airways now offers a more convenient way to do so.”

While restoring the airline’s pre-pandemic network is a priority, he added, expanding Fiji Airways’ route map is also essential. “Returning to the skies” does not simply mean resuming existing routes, according to Viljoen. “To strengthen and grow as a company, we must invest in new markets and solidify our networks.” Vancouver was an excellent choice for us.”

Aside from US routes, the airline currently serves four cities in Australia and three in New Zealand.

The Nadi Vancouver route, according to Viljoen, is ideal for serving the Canadian winter holiday market: “Our new route is strategically timed to offer Canadians a winter escape to a beautiful Fijian paradise, promising warm tropical weather, world-class hospitality from our tourism sector, excellent in-flight service with our cabin crew, and a comfortable modern fleet of aircraft.”

In addition, on 4 July, Fiji Airways resumed two weekly flights from Nadi to the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu.

We believe we will have more engaged customers, higher conversion rates, and higher satisfaction with our revamped digital touchpoints.”

Part of the Digital Experience Suite, Digital Commerce is Amadeus’ new internet booking engine, available through modern APIs and offering unmatched capabilities for travelers across digital touchpoints. Fiji Airways intends to resume flights to Australia “before Christmas” in 2021. Prior to the pandemic, the airline flew from Nadi to Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane daily. Their new flight schedules will be announced in the coming weeks.

“Our flight schedules will be released immediately following an official announcement by the Government which outlines border requirements and travel framework, “Fiji Airways CEO Andrew Viljoen said in a statement.

Fiji and Australia have a strong bilateral relationship. Around 3,000 Australians live in Fiji, while over 30,000 Fijians live in Australia. Over 360,000 Australians visit Fiji each year, making it a popular tourist destination.

Australians who want to spend a portion of their Christmas vacation in a tropical paradise will be relieved that Fiji’s borders have reopened, and Fiji Airways has returned.

According to Fiji Airways, the Pacific nation is “on track to have the entire working population fully vaccinated by November,” with its borders set to reopen “before Christmas” and the airline resuming flights to Australia at that time.

The airline’s pre-pandemic network connected Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane to the tourism hub of Nadi, on the western side of Viti Levu’s main island; a revised restart schedule is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

“Our flight schedules will be released immediately following an official announcement by the Government which outlines border requirements and travel framework” promises Fiji Airways’ CEO Andre Viljoen.

“One of these (measures) will undoubtedly be that visitors must be fully vaccinated; a position Fiji Airways strongly supports.”

Through its Oneworld Connect membership of the Oneworld airline alliance, Fiji Airways offers perks such as lounge access and priority check-in and boarding for Qantas Frequent Flyers.

Qantas and Virgin Australia both include Fiji in their short-haul international network, with Qantas already planning to resume Sydney-Fiji flights on December 21.

Virgin remains eager to expand its domestic-only wings to New Zealand and Fiji as demand and borders open up and will be bolstering its fleet to nearly pre-pandemic proportions with nine more Boeing 737 jets scheduled to arrive between October and February 2022.

Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Singapore were also on Fiji Airways’ pre-pandemic map.

Bula Vinaka: Fiji Airways’ warm welcome to Singaporeans and Indians https://dev.traveldailymedia.com/bula-vinaka/ Fri, 16 Nov 2018 14:55:34 +0000 https://www.traveldailymedia.com/?p=487701 The post Bula Vinaka: Fiji Airways’ warm welcome to Singaporeans and Indians appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

The post Bula Vinaka: Fiji Airways’ warm welcome to Singaporeans and Indians appeared first on TD (Travel Daily Media) Brand TD.

When the team at Singapore’s renowned Changi Airport chose Fiji as their annual off-site destination, even though the countries are 10 hours apart, it became clear that Fiji must have been doing something right. It seems Fiji’s efforts to emerge as a fully rounded tourism destination, and not just a honeymooners’ paradise, are paying off.

With a view to attracting more tourists from Southeast Asia and India, Fiji Airways has spent conisderable time and effort to enable their journey and allow them to experience the Bula vibe (‘welcome’ in Fijian).

I chatted with the marketing officer at Fiji Airways, Marc Cavaliere, who in his spirited style unveiled some of their upcoming plans to make Fiji popular with the travel-hungry in Asia.

Befriending Singapore

Cavaliere started by drawing attention to the codeshare agreement between Singapore Airlines, SilkAir and Fiji Airways in this year, which provides more convenient connections for customers travelling to Fiji, from 10 destinations in Asia and Europe through the Singapore hub.

Under the agreement, Singapore Airlines and SilkAir customers can now access Fiji Airways’ non-stop flights between Singapore and Nadi, including the airline’s third weekly seasonal service that was launched on 4 April 2018. Customers can also travel on codeshare flights between Nadi and three domestic destinations, including the Fijian capital Suva, Labasa, and Savusavu.

In turn, Fiji Airways customers can access Singapore Airlines and SilkAir-operated flights to destinations in China, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

In addition to the codeshare, Fiji Airways passengers can benefit from the Changi Airport stopover programme that enables travellers to make the most of the shopaholic’s urban oasis. With stopovers ranging from a few hours to a few days, travellers can avail special free tours and sightseeing (for a minimum of four hours).

“People like a stopover on their way back… because they like to shop”

“Our stopover flights are resonably priced,” said Cavaliere. He also believes that the stopover programme will also be beneficial for travellers from India or Europe as they can choose to spend more days in Singapore. “Most of the European traffic in fact likes to connect via Singapore. I think most people like a stopover on their way back… because they like to shop,” he added with a grin.

The airline has also increased the frequency from Singapore and plans to continue this even through non-peak seasons. What that means for Singaporeans, expats and travellers in the region, is that they are now just an overnight flight away from the paradise islands three days a week.

Often seen as remote or distant, the South Pacific is seeing improved connections, particularly to the west. Newly appointed country manager at Fiji Airways, Jimmy Lee, affirmed the above and noted there was the possibility for growth at Nadi International: “We also have travellers who would use the airport as a transit hub, since we have connections to the west coast of the US and east New Zealand. We still have to tap into the full potential.”

Hence, the airline also has day stopover packages for transit passengers who wish to experience Fiji.

Taking Fiji to the world

For an island nation with a population under a million, Fiji Airways has been designed to be a network carrier.

“More connectivity to more of the world”

“It gives Fiji and the Fijians more connectivity to more of the world,” said Cavaliere. The carrier also became the first airline to join in the new capacity as a oneworld connect partner (which is unlike being a member as most of the bigger airlines are).

Cavaliere commented: “We serve a very important niche and, given our scale and size of operations, being a classic member was just not feasibile. As a connect member we have the same level of participation without the cost and complexity of connecting to all other airlines.

“From the Singapore perspective, we are thrilled at how the connections are developing with Jet Airways and Singapore Airlines for connectivity for all of the destinations in India.”

So is India an important inbound market? He excitedly reaffirmed, “It is absolutely growing for us. We get a lot of India inbound traffic via Hong Kong or Singapore and a lot over Australia too.” Currently there are connections to Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai in addition to five more cities via codeshare.

As of now Fiji Airways is working hand in hand with Fiji Tourism to boost inbound tourism from Asia and India. The upgrade of the lounge at Nadi International, new direct connection to Narita, Tokyo and improving airline partnerships are just the stepping stones.

For now, a lot rests on the shoulders of the newest Singapore country manager.

Travelport have announced the signing of an agreement with South Pacific airline, Fiji Airways. With this agreement, Travelport will provide the airline with a mobile application powered by its new Travelport Fusion product.

Travelport Fusion is a quick-to-market mobile solution that helps airlines keep up with the rapid changes in mobile technology. The new mobile app will provide Fiji Airways with a robust tool, providing a more compelling and engaging experience for travellers. It will allow Fiji Airways to fully maintain their brand identity with consistent brand experience. As part of the service and support from Travelport, Fiji Airways will also benefit from future product upgrades.

Marc Cavaliere, chief commercial officer of Fiji Airways commented, “We recognize the importance of mobile engagement and being able to connect with our customers, bringing them highly relevant, personalized information and services they need, at every step of their journey. Travelport Fusion allows us to implement this mobile app rapidly. We look forward to this new development with Travelport.”

A recent Travelport global digital traveller research report highlighted the need for a strong airline mobile app solution with findings indicating that 64 percent of travellers in Asia Pacific look for a good digital experience when choosing an airline to travel with. To further support this, 46 percent of them book their leisure trips on a smartphone and 73 percent believe that digital boarding passes make traveling much easier.

Ailsa Brown, vice president of Asia Pacific for Travelport Digital, said, “We are delighted that Fiji Airways has selected us to be their mobile partner. With our experience in mobile technology and our in-depth knowledge of the travel industry, Fiji Airways will receive complete support from our team, enabling them to focus on engaging their travellers and developing lasting and valuable relationships.”

With this agreement, Fiji Airways will also have access to digital analytics that includes booking trends and behaviours, allowing them to adapt their sales and marketing strategies more effectively. In addition, Travelport will provide further support and advice on best practice for digital marketing of the app and any app store optimization strategies.

The Fiji Airways app is due to be launched to the public in the second quarter of 2018.

Two airlines based in the South Pacific have forged an alliance that will help reconnect Samoa with international flights.

Samoa’s new national carrier, Samoa Airways, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Fiji Airways to jointly pursue a range of commercial opportunities. Under the proposed partnership, Fiji Airways will support the launch of Samoa Airways’ international services to Auckland and Sydney, including sales, operations and maintenance.

The two airlines also plan to jointly operate other routes via codesharing and interlining arrangements.

“We are happy to play a support role to help reboot Samoa’s international airline,” said Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO, Andre Viljoen. “The proposed commercial partnership between Samoa Airways and Fiji Airways is another extension of the already close relationship Fiji Airways continues to enjoy with the government of Samoa in terms of promoting improved air access into Samoa from other markets outside of New Zealand and Australia.”

The Prime Minister of Samoa, Tuilaepa Dr Sailele Malielegaoi, said the agreement would “open Samoa up to the world”.

“The proposed partnership between Fiji’s national airline and our own… is a testament to the strong bonds that we share as island nations in the Pacific region and embraces our Pacific way of doing things,” he added.

Fiji Airways has introduced a new initiative that allows economy class passengers to bid for upgrades to business class.

Under the under “Bula Bid” concept, passengers can visit a dedicated website, bulabid.com, and place a bid for an upgrade between seven days and 24 hours before their scheduled flight departure. Following an auction-style process, the successful bidders will be notified by email 24 hours before the flight.

“This new product is designed to give our economy class guests the chance to enjoy our renowned business class experience,” explained Andre Viljoen, Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO. “Interest among guests for Bula Bid has been extremely high during the soft-launch period, and we are delighted to roll it out formally now across our international networks.

“The successful bids are dependent on a number of factors including seat availability and the number and amount of offers for the flight. Naturally, the bids are subject to terms and conditions, and a number of back-end factors managed by the team at Fiji Airways,” he added.

Fiji Airways’ business class product includes a flat-bed seat onboard the airline’s new Airbus A330 aircraft, plus increased baggage allowance and airport lounge access.

“Last year was full of milestones achieved, culminating in the largest profit the airline has ever recorded. To achieve these results is nothing short of outstanding – in a year when we had the most devastating cyclone in our nation’s history slow down tourism and the launch of three new international routes,” Viljoen noted.

As well as launching Singapore and San Francisco in 2016, Fiji Airways started flying to Vava’u in Tonga and increased frequencies to several destinations, including Hong Kong, Auckland, Christchurch, Los Angeles and Sydney. It also continued to modernise its fleet with the launch of the new Airbus A330-300 aircraft on long-haul routes and the placement of an order for five new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

The airline’s expansion will continue this year with the launch of flights to Adelaide and the opening of a new lounge at Nadi International Airport.

Travel between India and Fiji will soon become easier, following the signing of a new codeshare agreement between Jet Airways and Fiji Airways.

The new partnership enables passengers to book single-ticket travel between India and Fiji, via Singapore and Hong Kong.

India’s Jet Airways will place its 9W code on Fiji Airways’ flights from Singapore and Hong Kong to Nadi, while Fiji Airways will place its FJ code on Jet’s services between Singapore and Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, as well as between Hong Kong and Mumbai and Delhi. Passengers will be able to earn frequent flyer miles on all bookings.

“This is a very significant achievement for both airlines. Demand for travel from Fiji to India for tourism, medical treatment, education and family reasons keeps growing and our codeshare agreement will boost this even further,” said Andre Viljoen, Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO.

Gaurang Shetty, Jet’s whole-time director, commented; “Ties between the people of India and Fiji can be traced back over a 100 years and with the governments of both countries making focused efforts to further strengthen trade, tourism and cultural ties, we believe this codeshare partnership will play a pivotal role in these endeavours by enabling seamless connectivity between both countries.”

Bookings for the codeshare flights are now open for sale for travel effective 9 March 2017.

Fiji Airways has revealed plans to modernise its fleet of single-aisle jet aircraft, which it uses to operate flights across Oceania and the Pacific.

The national carrier has placed an order for five brand new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft worth US$550 million at list prices, to replace its five existing B737s. The first two aircraft are due to be delivered in 2018 with the final three arriving the following year.

Once delivered, the five aircraft will be deployed on Fiji Airways’ short- and medium-haul routes to destinations including Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu.

Andre Viljoen, Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO, said the B737 MAX had been chosen “following the conclusion of an extremely exhaustive procurement and selection process”.

“The improved operating economics and product enhancements were compelling reasons to consider renewing the current Boeing 737 aircraft,” Viljoen said.

“This is a major capital decision that had to be done correctly so we followed a rigorous, thorough and transparent process to find the right solution. As a consequence of the fierce competition between the rival bidders and the extensive process followed by Fiji Airways, we have achieved a ground-breaking package deal.”

The renewal of the airline’s single-aisle fleet follows the recent revamp of its twin-aisle aircraft, with the old B747s being replaced by new Airbus A330s in the last few years. Regional subsidiary Fiji Link has also welcomed new ATR turboprop aircraft.

Commenting on the deal, Boeing’s senior vice president of sales for Asia Pacific & India, Dinesh Keskar, said the B737 MAX would be “the ideal airplane for Fiji Airways, allowing them to expand into new markets throughout Oceania and Southeast Asia”.

The solution will enable Fiji Airways to display all of its fares and ancillaries to Travelport-connected travel agents, with enhanced product descriptions and graphics. It also features screens that clearly display and compare what is included in a fare, allowing agents to up-sell.

Fiji Airways will also have the ability to make tailored or personalised offers to both individual travel agencies and corporations.

“Travel and tourism is the biggest industry in Fiji and is seeing continued growth in the Pacific. As the hub of the South Pacific, this presents an opportunity for Fiji Airways to project its brand and extend its reach to the growing numbers of inbound visitors into the region. Travelport’s Rich Content and Branding complements our growth strategy very well,” stated Andrew Stanbury, Fiji Airways’ executive general manager of sales & marketing.

Fiji Airways joins an extended list of more than 160 airlines worldwide that are now using Travelport Rich Content & Branding.

Fiji Airways has embarked on the next phase of its long-haul expansion plan with the launch of its first ever direct flights to San Francisco.

The inaugural flight touched down in the Californian city on 16 June 2016, and services will now operate twice a week using Fiji Airways’ new Airbus A330 aircraft.

The outbound flights will leave Fiji’s Nadi International Airport every Sunday and Thursday at 2215 and arrive at San Francisco International Airport at 1345. The return services take-off on the same days at 2300 and land back in Fiji at 0500 two days later. The flights, which have a duration of approximately 10-11 hours, cross the International Date Line.

The new service will run on a seasonal basis until 14 August 2016, before recommencing for the Christmas and New Year holidays in December 2016 and January 2017.

San Francisco becomes the second new long-haul destination launched by Fiji Airways this year, following the start of services to Singapore in April 2016. It also becomes the airline’s second destination on the US mainland, following Los Angeles.

“Starting from early April, Fiji rugby fans can now fly direct from Nadi International Airport to Singapore and this is definitely a boost for our sports tourism,” said Low Teo Ping, chairman of Rugby Singapore.

“Fiji is the defending World Sevens Series champions and they are also the defending champions of the Singapore Sevens when it was last held in 2006. I’m sure Fiji supporters will fly out in full force to support their national 7s team.”

The “Flying Fijians” are the two-time defending champions of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and are one of the gold medal favourites for this year’s Olympic Games in Rio, where rugby sevens will make its Olympic debut.

“As the world’s most passionate airline when it comes to sevens rugby, Fiji Airways is delighted to be the Official Airline of the Singapore Sevens. We are already proud sponsors of our home team and the defending series champions – Fiji,” said Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO, Andre Viljoen.

Fiji Airways’ Singapore flights commence on 5 April, and the Singapore Sevens tournament will be held on 16-17 April.

Solomon Airlines and Fiji Airways have confirmed that they will continue to operate flights to Vanuatu’s capital Port Vila, despite concerns about the runway at Bauerfield International Airport.

Last week Air New Zealand said it was suspending its Port Vila service as the runway has been “gradually deteriorating”. “We have taken the difficult decision… before the situation becomes unsafe,” it said.

But Solomon Airlines and Fiji Airways have both now said that they plan to continue flying to Port Vila. Solomon Airlines said the decision was taken after it conducted a review of the runway and concluded that conditions were “safe from a flight operational perspective”.

“Passengers and crew safety remain an absolute priority for Solomon Airlines and if there was ever any doubt, we would act accordingly. Hence our decision to immediately carry out our own review of the runway,” said the airline’s general manager of operations & commercial, Gus Kraus. “Our conclusion is that the runway is safe and we will continue to maintain operations with our… Airbus A320 into and out of the airport on its normal weekly schedule.”

He added however, that Solomon Airlines could cancel future flights “if… the situation changes”.

“We urge the authorities in Port Vila to also take the necessary steps of upgrading the runway conditions to ensure all airlines resume operations for the benefit of the Vanuatu people and industry and its future tourism development,” Kraus concluded.

Fiji Airways, which operates a lighter ATR aircraft to Port Vila, said it will “continue to monitor the condition of the runway”.

Fiji Airways has taken delivery of its first Airbus A330-300 – the largest aircraft in its fleet.

The new twin-aisle aircraft, which has been named ‘Island of Rotuma’, comes equipped with 313 seats – 24 in business class and 289 in economy. The economy class cabin also features a “Quiet Zone”.

The A330-300 will be deployed on the airline’s long-haul routes to Los Angeles and Hong Kong.

“This aircraft is more than just another addition to the fleet of our national airline; it is a symbol of a modern, progressive nation, which remains proud of its roots, culture and identity, while moving with the times to embrace the opportunities of the future,” said HE Jioji Konousi Konrote, President of Fiji, who was onboard the aircraft when it touched down at Nadi International Airport.

“This aircraft will bring real economic opportunities for our people, because almost 65% of all visitors who travel to Fiji travel on Fiji Airways. And the more seats we have, and the better our service and overall flight experience, the more we will be able to attract more travellers. We are competing in the premier division of air travel, and we want to win.”

The A330-300, which is expected to begin commercial flights this month, joins Fiji Airways’ fleet of three A330-200s, five Boeing 737s and three ATR turboprops operated by Fiji Link.

Fiji Airways has announced plans to launch direct services to San Francisco.

The new seasonal service will start on 16 June 2016, operating twice a week until January 2017. Flights will operate direct to and from Fiji’s main gateway, Nadi International Airport.

“This new service is in line with our network expansion targets and gives us further reach into North America,” explained Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO, Andre Viljoen.

“The seasonal flying takes into account common vacation trends out of the United States. Along with the Fijian community, the Samoan and Tongan communities living in San Francisco are also big winners with this direct service. It will offer them a convenient one-stop flight back to their homeland to see family and friends.”

The flight schedule will see services depart Nadi every Thursday and Sunday at 2100, arriving in San Francisco 1230 the same day, having crossed the International Date Line. The return services will then leave San Francisco at 2300, arriving back into Nadi at 0500 two days later.

The airline said that these flight times would provide “easy connectivity within Fiji, to Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific Island nations”.

Fiji Airways will operate the 10-hour flight using its two-class Airbus A330 aircraft.

San Francisco will become Fiji Airways’ second major route launch of 2016, following the new twice weekly service to Singapore which is expected to start in April. And San Francisco will become the airline’s third US destination, following Los Angeles and Honolulu.

“Fiji is already a popular holiday destination for Americans, especially those from California. The new San Francisco direct flights will allow even more visitors – including former Fiji residents – to visit our home, its beaches, its multitude of experiences, but most importantly, the world-renowned hospitality of the Fijian people,” said Fiji’s Attorney General and Minister for Public Enterprises & Civil Aviation, Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Indian travellers will be offered a new connection to Fiji next year, with the launch of a new route by Fiji Airways.

On 5 April 2016, the Fijian national carrier will launch twice weekly flights between Singapore’s Changi Airport and Fiji’s Nadi International Airport. The 10-hour flight will operate using Fiji Airways’ new two-class Airbus A330 aircraft, and will provide one-stop connections to and from a range of Indian cities via Singapore’s Changi Airport.

“This is a significant milestone for Changi Airport, with Fiji Airways’ new service bridging new direct links between Singapore and the South Pacific Islands,” said Changi Airport Group’s CEO, Lee Seow Hiang.

“For travellers in Singapore as well as other parts of Asia and Europe, this development makes accessible to them new and exciting holiday destinations in the South Pacific. This certainly adds to Changi’s attractiveness as an air hub.”

Fiji has a large Indian diaspora, but at present Indian passengers have to travel to Fiji via Australia or Hong Kong.

Travellers will be offered a direct connection between Singapore and Fiji next year, with the launch of a new route by Fiji Airways.

On 5 April 2016, the Fijian national carrier will launch twice weekly flights between Singapore’s Changi Airport and Fiji’s Nadi International Airport. Services will operate using Fiji Airways’ new two-class Airbus A330 aircraft. The flight duration of 10 hours will cut at least three hours off the existing travel time, which requires passengers to stop in Australia or New Zealand.

The service will provide a new one-stop connection for European and Asian travellers wanting to travel to Fiji.

Andre Viljoen, managing director & CEO of Fiji Airways, added that the new route would allow Fijian travellers to explore more of Asia.

“Fijians will now be able to enjoy the comfort of our A330 aircraft on this 10-hour flight, departing Nadi late night and arriving in Singapore fresh in the morning ready to explore all that this bustling metropolitan city-state has to offer,” Viljoen said. “In addition, most onwards flights to key cities in India, Indonesia and Malaysia are under four hours, which adds to the appeal of flying through Singapore. With this, we’re making good on our promise of taking Fijians to the world.”

The new route becomes Fiji Airways’ second Asian connection, following its existing direct flights to Hong Kong.

Fiji Airways posted a record profit for the first six months of 2015.

The airline’s operating profit reached FJ$17.5 million (US$8.2m) for the January-June 2015 period, up 13% year-on-year and the highest six-month result in the company’s history.

The airline said the growth was driven by a 6.7% increase in passenger traffic, which contributed to a 4.7% rise in revenues.
Fiji Airways’ chairman, Nalin Patel, called the result “another outstanding performance”, on the back of the record profit of FJ$60.8m achieved in the 2014 financial year.

“While there is no room for complacency, we are seeing some excellent results from the financial growth plan that Fiji Airways has had in place since last year,” said Patel. “With strong support from our staff and shareholders, management has been able to make sound financial and commercial decisions that are benefitting our people, the tourism industry and the entire Fijian economy.”

The airline added new routes to New Zealand and Tonga in the first half, and said that it would now aim to launch more routes in future.

“We are working hard to finalise a new long-haul route, continue our pilot localisation programme between Fiji Airways and Fiji Link and introduce a fourth brand new A330 in our fleet in December,” said Fiji Airways’ acting CEO, David Bowden.

“Foreign exchange consideration will continue to be a factor for us, as will the rising price of fuel. But we remain focused and dedicated to the strategies in place to address these challenges”, he added.

Two South Pacific national carriers, Fiji Airways and Real Tonga, have formed a new alliance to improve connectivity between the island nations.

Under a new codeshare arrangement, Real Tonga will be able to sell seats on Fiji Airways’ thrice weekly (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) flights between Nuku’alofa, the capital of Tonga, and Vava’u, a group of Tongan islands. The route is operated by Fiji Link using a brand new ATR 72 aircraft.

These flights will then allow passengers to connect to Fiji’s main international hub, Nadi International Airport, via Nuku’alofa.

“This commercial arrangement is a major step forward for Tongan Aviation,” said Tevita Palu, CEO of Real Tonga. “It enables Real Tonga to provide extra capacity when most needed in the peak seasons to satisfy the demand and enable the market to grow.

“Aside from making it easier for Tongans to travel between the capital and Vava’u, these key air links will be a tremendous boost to the island’s tourism. This is the start to developing a relationship between the two carriers,” he added.

David Bowden, Fiji Airways’ acting CEO commented; “Our new arrangement makes Vava’u a valuable new addition to our network, and directly links the island to the United States, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. This is a big boost for Vava’u – to be plugged into our route network and sales capabilities.”

Fiji Airways has achieved the strongest profit in its history, as the company’s recent rebranding and expansion strategy started to show results.

For the full-year 2014, the airline generated an operating profit of FJ$60.8 million (US$29.8m) – higher than the previous record set in 2005. The company’s revenues rose to FJ$769.5m, while net profits totalled FJ$52.8m.

“We’re obviously delighted with this performance, which has been achieved through the hard work of the entire team,” said Nalin Patel, chairman of Fiji Airways’ parent company, Air Pacific Ltd.

“All of the key business and financial metrics outperformed the previous financial year, with passenger numbers, load factor and average fares all improving significantly, coupled with growth in line with productivity levels of the best global airlines,” he added.

Fiji Airways handled a total of 1.24m passengers in 2014, up 4.5% compared with the previous year, while the airline’s average load factor jumped from 77% to 83%. The airline operated 9,002 flights in 2014, 5.3% more than 2013.

Two new routes were launched last year, Suva-Sydney and Suva-Apia, while the carrier added more flights to several countries including Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Tuvalu and Samoa.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, a member of the Fijian cabinet, said the result “vindicates the… government’s decision to rebrand the airline [and] vindicates our decision to invest in new aircraft, such as our state-of-the-art A330s and new ATRs.”

Solomon Islands is still unhappy about its share of the Fiji route

Solomon Airlines, the national carrier of the Solomon Islands, will resume flights to Fiji on 24 January 2015.

The flights had been dropped due to a dispute between the Solomon and Fijian governments, which had been in a state of impasse since July 2014. But this has now been resolved, enabling Solomon Airlines to resume its approved weekly flight from Honiara to Nadi, via Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu. Flights will depart Honiara every Saturday, returning from Nadi on Sunday.

But a spokesperson for Solomon Airlines said the carrier is still unhappy about the share of services it is being allocated, compared with Fiji Airways.

“While Solomon Airlines has been allowed to resume flights into Fiji as of 24 January, the reality is that all we are doing is continuing to operate without fifth or sixth freedom rights on a Honiara-Port Vila-Nadi basis with the issue being rights between Port Vila and Nadi,” the spokesperson said.

“Fiji Airways on the other hand is being allowed to operate with full fifth and sixth freedom rights. Fiji Airways enjoys the right to operate into Honiara via Port Vila, embarking and disembarking passengers on the whole route while we do not have rights from Port Vila-Nadi and vice versa.”

And the fact that Fiji Airways has been awarded rights to fly on same days as Solomon Airlines is creating a situation of over-capacity on weekends, and under-capacity on the remaining days of the week, according to Solomon Airlines

“We are obviously not happy with this result as it stands but have agreed to honour the joint governments’ agreement and we are hoping that further discussions in late January/early February will prevail and our sentiments will be heard,” he concluded.

There will be more options for travellers between Fiji and New Zealand next year, when Fiji Airways adds a new route to Wellington.

Commencing on 25 June 2015, the Fijian national carrier will serve the New Zealand capital twice a week (Thursdays and Sundays) direct from Nadi.

The launch will come just two days after Fiji Airways adds a second weekly flight on its Nadi-Christchurch route. In addition, the airline operates 13 weekly flights between Fiji and Auckland.

“We announced earlier this year in our five-year strategic plan that we were committed to increasing capacity between New Zealand and Fiji. The introduction of this new route reflects our commitment to the New Zealand market, and in growing our global network,” said Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO, Stefan Pichler.

“We also recently announced that Fiji Airways was doubling its capacity to Christchurch from next winter, with the weekly Saturday flight complemented by a permanent additional service on Tuesdays, from 23 June 2015.

“Widening our route network and increasing inbound visitor numbers to Fiji has strong benefits for the local travel industry and for Fiji as a unique destination,” he added.

The new Wellington route will offer 328 more weekly seats between New Zealand and Fiji.

Fiji Airways has launched its new marketing campaign which it says is “designed to showcase the warm nature of Fijians’ hospitality”.

Called ‘Welcome to our Home’, the campaign focuses on Fijian culture and how this extends to the service offered onboard Fiji Airways flights.

The move follows the recent rebranding of Fiji Airways, which included a new Fijian-inspired aircraft livery and revamped in-flight services.

“Following our successful relaunch to Fiji Airways last year, we have revamped our marketing approach and have now included more of Fiji’s people in the way we market our company and the country overseas,” said Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO, Stefan Pichler.

“As the national carrier, we want to show off what makes Fiji so special and unique as an experience. This brand position resonates well with the Fijian people because they live this experience every day.”

The campaign includes a series of videos featuring three real families – one from Australia, one form New Zealand and one from Fiji – who recently travelled with the airline. These clips are available to watch at ourhome.fijiairways.com.

“Treating visitors like family is an inherent quality of Fijians. Our people at Fiji Airways naturally extend this same courtesy to all our guests on board. They are far more than just a seat number, they are part of our extended Fijian family,” Pichler added.

Fiji Link, the regional subsidiary of Fiji Airways, will welcome its first brand new ATR 42-600 aircraft in August.

The recently rebranded airline, which was formerly known as Pacific Sun, welcomed its first new ATR 72-600 in June 2014, and will soon follow this up with the addition of a second new turboprop.

The ATR 42-600 is the new version of the ATR 42 series, offering 44 seats. Fiji Link already operates two older ATR 72-500s.

“We have a robust plan to modernise the Fiji Link fleet to more efficiently serve the domestic market as well as the South Pacific,” said Fiji Airways’ group managing director & CEO, Stefan Pichler.

“This incoming 600-series ATR 42 is a step-up from the current 500-series that Fiji Link operates. Following the arrival of this brand new aircraft along with another ATR 72-600 for Fiji Link in December, the two current ATR 42-500s will exit the fleet. So overall, we will significantly increase Fiji Link capacity this year with state-of-the-art new ATR aircraft.”

Fiji Link currently operates a fleet of ATR turboprops on domestic and regional routes to destinations including Tonga, Samoa and Tuvalu.

Fiji Airways has embarked on a major increase in capacity across a series of key routes.

The recent arrival of a new ATR72-600 aircraft for regional carrier Fiji Link has freed up Fiji Airways’ Boeing 737s to be used on flights to Australia and New Zealand.

As a result, the national carrier has now added two more flights to its Nadi-Melbourne route, taking it up to a daily service, while two more overnight flights have also been added to the Nadi-Auckland route, boosting the total frequency to 11 flights per week.

“It’s exciting for us to be able to add additional capacity to our key markets of Australia and New Zealand for the peak season, thanks to the addition of the ATR 72 which has freed up the B737s needed to operate these services,” said Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO, Stefan Pichler.

“The increase in capacity to our tourist source markets is good news for us as Fiji’s national airline group and for Fiji’s tourism industry. This was always our intention… and we note with satisfaction, that the Department of Immigration has reported rising visitor numbers from our major inbound markets.”

In addition to the extra Melbourne and Auckland services, Fiji Airways will also start direct services between Nadi and Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, from 5 July, and more frequencies will be added during peak periods (July, October, December and January) to the Sydney and Christchurch routes. Fiji Airways currently operates once a week to Christchurch and 15 times a week to Sydney.

In June 2014, the newly-rebranded Fiji Link commenced a new direct service between Fiji’s capital Suva and Apia, the capital of Samoa, using the airline’s brand new ATR72-600 aircraft.

Fiji Airways has unveiled a complete overhaul of its in-flight dining, with all new economy class meals and a revamp of its business class dining options.

The airline has now removed its boxed meal concept and most of its burger and wrap selections. It will replace these with a new tray service, with hot meals being offered in economy class on flights to Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific and more substantial snacks on short-haul routes, including those operated by regional carrier Fiji Link. Passengers on long-haul flights to Los Angeles and Hong Kong will be served two hot meals.

In business class, a new signature dish has been developed by Lance Seeto, executive chef of the Castaway Island Resort, which the airline says will feature “top quality Fijian produce”. This will be launched on 1 September 2014.

“As we continue to make headway towards our goal of becoming a leading global boutique airline, addressing our in-flight experience, especially the catering, has been a key priority,” said Stefan Pichler, Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO.

“Our onboard catering, especially on the short- and medium haul sectors, attracted their fair share of negative feedback since introduction, and we have been taking it all into account. The new catering offers the choice and style of meals that our guests desire.”

The new in-flight meals form part of a major overhaul of Fiji Airways’ onboard products. This will also include changes to its in-flight entertainment, duty free and in-flight magazine.

Fiji Link, the newly-rebranded regional airline, has launched a new route to Samoa.

Services between Fiji’s capital Suva and the Samoan capital Apia commenced today (Monday 16 June 2014) and will now operate twice a week using the airline’s brand new ATR72-600 aircraft.

The former Pacific Sun airline was renamed Fiji Link earlier this month, following the delivery of the new aircraft.

“We’re delighted to be able to introduce the new and direct services between the two Pacific capitals,” said Stefan Pichler, group managing director & CEO of Fiji Airways.

“This will greatly benefit tertiary students studying the university campuses in Suva and Apia, as well as the business community in Samoa as well as in Fiji. It is our aim to develop Suva as a key business hub in the region, and increase travel and trade in the South Pacific.”

The new twice weekly services depart Suva every Monday and Friday, with the return leg leaving Apia on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Flights last approximately 2.5 hours. The new route complements the airline’s existing four weekly flights between Nadi and Apia, meaning Fiji Airways and Fiji Link now offer a total six weekly flights between Fiji and Samoa. The Nadi-Apia service continues on to Hawaii.

“Our five-year master plan highlights our commitment and underscores our desire to remain the leading network airline in the region. We are targeting growing our capacity in this region by almost 87%, and the Suva-Apia services are a key part of that plan,” Pichler added.

Fiji Airways has rebranded its regional airline, Pacific Sun, following the delivery of the first aircraft bearing the company’s new name, Fiji Link.

Fiji Link’s first new ATR72-600 turboprop aircraft was delivered by Singapore-based aircraft leasing company Aviation Plc this week.

The new 68-seat aircraft will replace the airline’s older 44-seat ATR42-500s, offering extra capacity on routes to Fiji’s larger domestic ports of Nadi, Suva and Labasa, and Pacific island destinations including Samoa and Tonga. A second new ATR72-600 is also due to join the Fiji Link fleet in the coming weeks.

“These increases in frequency and capacity demonstrate our commitment to build a global, connected network,” said Stefan Pichler, Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO.

“This larger capacity modern ATR turboprop comes in the right moment in the airline’s new operational schedule. Only six months after the announcement of the airline’s fleet optimisation and restructuring fueled by the growth in domestic and regional traffic in the past years, Fiji Link is ready to offer its customers more choice and flexibility of flights, as well as unparalleled passenger comfort.”

The rebranding of Pacific Sun to Fiji Link comes a year after Fiji’s main national carrier, Air Pacific was renamed Fiji Airways.

Fiji Airways is preparing to rebrand its regional carrier, Pacific Sun.

The airline will take delivery of its first brand new ATR72-600 aircraft in early June, which will come adorned in the new brand livery, displaying the name, ‘Fiji Link’.

Pacific Sun currently operates a fleet of two 44-seat ATR42-500s and three 29-seat Twin Otters, but the two new 68-seat ATR72-600s will replace the ATR42s, boosting the airline’s capacity.

Eleven Pacific Sun pilots are undergoing training for the ATR72 in preparation for the new arrivals. The aircraft will be used to operate Fiji’s higher volume domestic routes, between Nadi, Suva and Labasa, as well as regional services to destinations including Samoa and Tonga.

The rebranding from Pacific Sun to Fiji Link follows the renaming of parent company Air Pacific to Fiji Airways in 2013.

“We are committed to grow in the South Pacific and the domestic markets as part of our five-year master plan,” said Stefan Pichler, Fiji Airways’ group managing director & CEO.

“The arrival of the larger ATR72-600 aircraft marks the beginning of our fleet modernisation plan for Fiji Link. Another brand new ATR 42-600 aircraft will likely enter the fleet in November, allowing one of the existing 500-series ATRs to exit the fleet. And, finally, a second brand new ATR 72-600 will be here in December, exiting the second current ATR 42-500.

“Adding new ATR aircraft for regional operations means freeing up some capacity of our B737 aircraft, which again allow us to grow our services into our Australia, New Zealand and also Hawaii,” he added.

Fiji Airways kicked off its rebranding process last summer, when the arrival of a new fleet of Airbus A330-200s marked the birth of its new mainline brand. It is now extending this process to its regional fleet.

Fiji Airways has signed a major new agreement with Etihad Airways that will see the two carriers interline on routes spanning five continents.

While the specific terms of the agreement are still to be negotiated, the airlines revealed that the deal will encompass reciprocal sales on routes connecting Fiji with 12 cities in Europe, 17 in the Middle East, five in Africa, five in North America, 29 cities in Asia and three destinations in Australia.

“We are proud to be part of the global Etihad Airways network and this partnership will help us to put Fiji on the map in countries where we had no presence before,” said Stefan Pichler, managing director & CEO of Fiji Airways. “Etihad Airways will help us to reach out for new customers and to diversify tourism streams for our country. It is definitely a major step for Fiji Airways.”

Meanwhile Etihad’s president & CEO, James Hogan, said the agreement “connects the outer South Pacific Islands to our network, which creates more opportunities for our worldwide sales force”.

Fiji Airways already has codeshare agreements in place with several carriers, including American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qantas and Air New Zealand. But the latest deal, potentially offering a series of one-stop connections from Abu Dhabi, is expected to significantly extend the airline’s reach, and expand Fiji’s tourism catchment area.

Etihad will interline with Fiji Airways on numerous routes
Etihad will interline with Fiji Airways on numerous routes

“This opens up a whole new lucrative market for our tourism industry, enabling us to attract affluent visitors from Abu Dhabi – Etihad’s base – the other Gulf States, the rest of the Middle East and beyond,” said Fiji’s minister of tourism, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

For Etihad, this latest deal continues its long-standing strategy of developing its own global network of alliance partners. The UAE national carrier airline already holds equity investments in airberlin, Air Seychelles, Virgin Australia, Aer Lingus, Air Serbia and Jet Airways, although there are no suggestions at this stage that Etihad will make a financial investment in Fiji’s national carrier.

Fiji Airways has recently completed a major rebranding process, which has seen it change its name from Air Pacific, revamp its fleet and adopt a brand new livery.

The airline changed its financial reporting period last year, but the result means Fiji Airways is on track to exceed the full-year profit of FJ$17.8m recorded in the 12 months to 31 March 2013. This in turn marked a 66% jump compared to 2012.

During 2013, Fiji Airways continued to revamp its fleet, with new Airbus A330-200s taking over from the airline’s older long-haul fleet of Boeing 747s. The airline added new routes to Sydney, Samoa and the Solomon Islands, and more flights from Fiji to destinations including Hong Kong and Christchurch.

“2013 was a major transition year for Fiji Airways,” said the airline’s chairman, Nalin Patel. “We rebranded to Fiji Airways… and we changed over from our long serving B747 aircraft to the more efficient A330 wide-body aircraft. This transition alone accounted for more than FJ$14 million one-time transition expenses in the financial year 2013. Our finance costs increased by FJ$33.6 million as we added these new aircraft to our Fiji Airways fleet.”

But rising revenues, driven by a 2.5% increase in passenger traffic, helped the airline stay profitable in 2013.

The group will continue with its rebranding programme in 2014, as regional carrier Pacific Sun becomes Fiji Link.

Fiji Airways has unveiled a major new expansion plan that will increase its fleet size by 25% over the next five years.

The airline, which was formerly known as Air Pacific, will implement a major new five-year plan focusing on three key areas: increasing its fleet and seat capacity, driving higher operating profits, and expanding its route network through partnerships.

In terms of the fleet expansion, Fiji Airways confirmed it would add new Airbus A330-200s, Boeing 737-800s and ATR 72-600s over the coming years, with the overall aim of boosting its fleet size by 25%, and expanding seat capacity by 35%.

This is expected to drive a 39% increase in passenger traffic, which in turn is expected to boost the airline’s operating profits to more than FJ$100 million (US$53m).

“Our aim is to be a world-class airline matched by an ambitious but solid financial plan that expands on current successes and takes our airline to a new level,” explained Stefan Pichler, Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO.

“We plan to increase total staff numbers by 28.5%. Part of our vision for 2017 is to be the Fijians’ employer of choice,” he added.

In terms of network expansion, the Nadi-based airline said it will focus on developing new routes through “interlining and codesharing opportunities”.

Fiji Airways embarked on a major modernisation strategy last year, rebranding itself from the former Air Pacific and renewing its long-haul fleet, with new A330s replacing its old B747s. It also now intends to rebadge its regional subsidiary, Pacific Sun, as Fiji Link.

Fiji Airways and Fiji Link currently operate a combined fleet of 12 aircraft – three A330s, four B737s, two ATRs and two Twin Otters.

Fiji Airways has revealed that its regional subsidiary, Pacific Sun, will be rebranded as ‘Fiji Link’ in 2014.

Following the renaming of Air Pacific as Fiji Airways earlier this year, the airline’s brand restructuring will continue next year with the overhaul of Pacific Sun, which operates inter-island flights within Fiji and to neighbouring countries including Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Along with the new name, Pacific Sun’s aircraft will receive a new livery, based on Fiji Airways’ brand colours and design.

“Pacific Sun hasn’t had a brand alignment with its commercial position since its inception. Following the rebranding of Fiji Airways, we made it a priority to create a new identity for our regional carrier,” said Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO, Stefan Pichler.

“Fiji Link will fulfil its role as an extension of the Fiji Airways network, carrying our customers throughout Fiji and beyond within the Pacific. Importantly, it will deliver all the Fijian hospitality and warmth customers expect when visiting our region,” he added.

The name ‘Fiji Link’ was selected following a vote involving members of the public and staff at both Pacific Sun and Fiji Airways. And Shaenaz Voss, Pacific Sun’s general manager, said there was a “clear preference” for the new name.

“Fiji Link is an appropriate name for our airline and like its parent Fiji Airways, Fiji Link will fly the Fijian flag wherever it flies. As an important part of our regional network, the airline will embody Fiji’s position as a hub and gateway to the South Pacific,” Voss said.

The new brand will be adopted in mid-2014 after the arrival of Pacific Sun’s new ATR72 aircraft. Like Fiji Airways’ new Airbus A330-200 aircraft, the new ATRs will feature the white, brown and black livery and traditional Fijian ‘Teteva’ and ‘Makare’ motifs.

Further details of the rebranding process are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Fiji Airways has taken delivery of its third brand new Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

Christened ‘Island of Yasawa-i-rara’, after the chain of islands northwest of Nadi, the new twin-aisle aircraft features the new Fiji Airways livery, following its recent rebranding from Air Pacific.

After a low fly-over the Yasawa islands, the aircraft touched down at Nadi International Airport where it was welcomed by airline officials. The delivery marks the third and final new A330 to join the airline’s fleet this year, and will allow Fiji Airways to retire its fleet of Boeing 747-400 aircraft.

“The new A330 is set to not only improve our schedules, but to also boost our profitability and the reliability of our services. It is enabling us to introduce a third Fiji – Hong Kong service from December, and will enable more direct flights to our key markets, as well as many more connections with partner airlines around the globe. The expansion of our long haul fleet is helping to bring the world to Fiji, opening up new source markets for Fiji tourism and helping to boost the Fijian economy,” said Stefan Pichler, Fiji Airways’ managing director & CEO.

The new A330 comes equipped with 273 seats in two classes – 24 in business class and 249 in economy.

The three new A330s and four newly-refurbished B737 aircraft form part of Fiji Airways’ five-year plan to transform the airline.

Fiji’s newly rebranded national carrier, Fiji Airways, has touched down at Los Angeles International Airport for the first time, sporting its new livery.

The carrier, formerly known as Air Pacific, has now launched flights from Fiji to LA using its brand new Airbus A330-200 aircraft, which seats 273 passengers in two classes. It takes over the LA route from the old Boeing 747-400, which will now be removed from the airline’s fleet.

“We are honoured to be Fiji’s flying ambassador to the world – now the Fijian experience starts the moment you enter the plane,” said Aubrey Swift, Fiji Airways’ acting CEO. “From the traditional Fijian Masi artwork that adorns the tail of the aircraft, to the rich interior, to its own staff, to the name, this airline proudly represents all that the Fijian culture and our beautiful islands stand for.”

Fiji Airways will offer six weekly flights to and from LA from now until December 2013, when it will add a seventh. An eighth weekly service will be added for peak travel seasons.

Onboard the new aircraft passengers will be offered 24 flat-bed seats in the new business class and 249 new seats in a revamped economy (replacing the old Tabua and Pacific Voyager cabins). All seats come equipped with personal in-flight entertainment and USB ports.

The long-awaited move will see the Fijian national carrier return to its old name, which was last used in 1971. It also marks another milestone in the airline’s turnaround plan, which includes the renewal of the airline’s long-haul fleet.

“The official changeover date marks the official end of Air Pacific and the beginning of Fiji Airways. It is exciting that after a 15-month journey, we can now be known as Fiji Airways across the globe. The changeover represents an exciting future for the airline that is rooted in our more than 60-year history and service to the people of Fiji,” said Aubrey Swift, Air Pacific’s acting CEO.

The national carrier’s second new Fiji Airways-branded Airbus A330-200 arrived in Nadi late last month and has already been put into service on flights to and from Sydney. Air Pacific has ordered a total of three new 273-seat A330-200s, the third of which will arrive in November 2013. These aircraft will replace the airline’s aging Boeing 747-400s.

Along with the new Fiji Airways name, the new aircraft have been adorned with traditional Fijian designs to reflect the airline’s national heritage. The rebranding process will also include new uniforms and a new website, fijiairways.com, which will also be launched on 27 June.

The first new A330 is due to enter service on 2 April 2013, flying between Nadi and Auckland. This will mark the start of new five-times-a-week service to the New Zealand city. Brisbane will be the first Australian city to see the A330, with five weekly flights starting on 21 April. Sydney’s A330 flights start on 8 June, with frequencies on the route rising to twice a day from September 2013 and 17 flights per week during peak season, using a mix of A330s and Boeing 737s. The first Melbourne A330 flight will commence in December, with five weekly flights.

The A330 will also start operating to Hong Kong from 4 April, with twice weekly flights every Thursday and Saturday, replacing the B747 that currently operates the route. A third A330 flight will be added in January 2014.

The US will see its first A330 flight on 1 July, when the airline deploys the aircraft to Los Angeles. The current schedule of four weekly B747 flights will be replaced with a mix of A330 and B747 services until November, following which the A330s will fully take over the route, with daily services.

“The entire Air Pacific team is thrilled about the opportunity to start showing our regular customers and new visitors to Fiji our new state-of-the-art A330s,” said David Pflieger, Air Pacific’s managing director & CEO.” “While our goal has always been to offer our customers the best flying experience in the Pacific, our new planes are going to make a huge difference in our ability to deliver on that promise, and we will be revealing even better service and other surprises when we officially become ‘Fiji Airways’ later this year.”

The move to the new A330s comes as Air Pacific rebrands to Fiji Airways. The new A330s, which will feature the new Fiji Airways livery, will come equipped with 273 seats – 24 in business class and 249 in economy.

By the end of 2013, Air Pacific will have retired its entire fleet of B747s and repainted all of its B737s.

Fiji’s national carrier Air Pacific has posted its first operating profit in three years.

For the fiscal year ending 31 March 2012 the Nadi-based airline reported a profit of FJ$16.5 million (US$9.1m), compared to a FJ$3.7m loss in 2010-11 and a record FJ$91.8m deficit two years ago. The result was achieved following a 16.3% rise in revenues, which totalled FJ$645.9m.

Nalin Patel, Chairman of Air Pacific’s Board of Directors, attributed the performance to the airline’s turnaround plan.

“The fact that we managed to return the airline to an operating profit only two years after we experienced the biggest loss in our history speaks volumes about the experience and capability of our new management team and the soundness of their turnaround plan,” Patel said.

As part of its turnaround plan Air Pacific will be renamed ‘Fiji Airways’ next year, coinciding with the delivery of its new Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

Air Pacific is also looking to wrestle control of the airline away from Qantas, which owns a 46% stake in the Fijian airline. In March this year, the Fijian government decreed that Air Pacific should be “effectively controlled” by the Fijian government, a Fijian citizen or a corporation which is at least 51% owned by Fijians. The Qantas stake was seen as vital due to the lack of domestic investment in Air Pacific, but Fiji is now looking to take greater control of its national carrier, investing in new aircraft, cabin products and lounges.

Dave Pflieger, Air Pacific’s Managing Director & CEO, attributed the improvement to all members of the airline’s staff.

“Over the last two years, the Air Pacific team has not only designed, but delivered on a turnaround plan focused on returning it to profitability for shareholders, staff, and the Fijian people. To report a profit in a year that witnessed significant fuel cost increases, strong and continued competition in a key market from two low cost carriers, and two major flooding crises, is a rousing testament to the hard work, dedication and effectiveness of the men and women who proudly represent Fiji’s national airline.”

Fiji’s national carrier Air Pacific will be renamed Fiji Airways from June 2013.

The rebranding marks a return to the airline’s original name, which it used from 1958 to 1970, and forms part of a major turnaround strategy of the airline aimed at reversing a series of losses.

Air Pacific will be renamed Fiji Airways from June 2013

“Globally there is high consumer awareness of Fiji as a holiday destination. We want to strengthen that association and also promote Fiji in every country we fly to. Returning to Fiji Airways will better reflect our role as Fiji’s national carrier, and also assist Fiji by growing tourism and interest in the nation,” said David Pflieger, Air Pacific’s Managing Director & CEO.

“Our airline is one of Fiji’s largest companies employing 800 people directly and an estimated 8,000 or so indirectly, and we fly in over 60% of all visitors who come to Fiji, so it only makes sense for us to embrace our uniquely Fijian culture and spirit.

“Our rebranding is part of an overall turnaround plan – a plan that is working well and should, with continued focus and effort, help us thrive and grow as the preferred airline of the South Pacific,” he added.

The rebranding marks another step in the airline’s turnaround plan, which has already seen increased flights between Fiji and Sydney, an order for three new Airbus A330-200 aircraft, and work on modernising the airline’s product and services.

The new A330-200s, which are due to be delivered in 2013, will feature the airline’s new livery and logo, with all other branding being gradually changed over the next 18 months.
