Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) achieved another record-breaking year in 2016, experiencing its highest ever levels of passenger traffic, flight movements and cargo traffic.

Last year, HKIA handled a total of 70.5 million passengers and 411,530 flight movements, representing year-on-year growth of 2.9% and 1.4%, respectively. Cargo throughput increased by 3.2% to a record 4.52m tonnes.

HKIA also set new a new record of 1,270 take-offs and landings in a single day in 2016.

The airport welcomed five new airlines in 2016 – Austrian Airlines, Bismillah Airlines, Malindo Air, T’way Air and VietJet Air – while the airport became connected to eight new destinations: Madrid, Saipan, London Gatwick, Nha Trang, Chiang Rai, Ishigaki, Takamatsu and Yonago.

“We are delighted to see another record-breaking year of growth, and we must thank our more than 73,000 colleagues of the airport community for their concerted efforts in achieving this remarkable accomplishment, which will further strengthen HKIA’s leading position as an international and regional aviation hub,” said Fred Lam, CEO of Hong Kong’s Airport Authority.

Efforts are being made to expand HKIA, with the new Midfield Concourse having opened in 2016 and plans for a third runway, which is being created on a new manmade island in the Pearl River Delta, also progressing.

“To meet the medium- and long-term growth demands of today’s aviation landscape, we are pushing forward a number of developments at HKIA, including the expansion of Terminal 1 and the three-runway system, said Lam. “We are also launching the Hong Kong International Aviation Academy this year, providing various courses to nurture talent for the industry.

“We will continue to work closely with our business partners to maintain smooth operations and a world-class travel experience for our passengers,” he concluded.

While not all airport traffic figures have yet been released, HKIA is likely to have been the world’s eighth busiest airport and the third busiest in Asia Pacific in 2016, after Beijing Capital and Tokyo Haneda.

Hong Kong International Airport has formed a new partnership with London Heathrow Airport, aimed at driving the development of both hubs and the entire industry.

The collaboration was signed late last week by John Holland-Kaye, CEO of Heathrow, and Fred Lam, CEO of Hong Kong’s Airport Authority.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two airports will work together and share expertise with the aim of improving operations, driving innovation, raising passenger service standards and improving environmental performance.

“We are delighted to sign this agreement which will enable our two airports to work closer together in the future,” said Lam. “Our cooperation is poised to bring exciting opportunities for the two airports. And by sharing experience and knowledge, we will bring even better airport experience for our passengers from all over the world.”

Heathrow and HKIA are among the busiest airports in the world, handling a combined total of more than 140 million passengers in 2015. They also have similar attributes, including their high proportion of international and transit traffic, and face similar capacity and expansion challenges.

Teams from the two airports will now work together on joint projects, which they claim will “help shape industry standards”. Areas identified for the first phase of the cooperation include the central management of airport operations, crisis planning, passenger services, future terminal design and the opportunities to be gained from expansion.

“This relationship will see two of the world’s most successful hub airports working together to make our operations and service to passengers industry leading in every aspect,” said Holland-Kaye. “Heathrow has similar challenges and different skills to Hong Kong – this will be a great opportunity to draw the best out of each other to the benefit of our passengers, our communities and the environment.”

Heathrow is Europe’s busiest airport, handling 74.95m passengers in 2015, while HKIA clocked a record total of 68.49m passengers last year, making it Asia Pacific’s third busiest airport.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) set new records for passenger traffic and aircraft movements in 2015, bringing it closer to full capacity.

Following a record-breaking 2014, the airport’s traffic volumes continued to surge last year, with a total of 68.5 million passengers and 406,020 flight movements, representing growth of 8.1% and 3.8% respectively. The airport’s cargo throughput also reached a record 4.38m tonnes.

“We are pleased to see HKIA achieving another recording breaking year,” said Fred Lam, CEO of Hong Kong’s Airport Authority. “During the past year, HKIA also set new records in daily passenger volume and aircraft movements, reaching around 228,000 passengers and over 1,200 flight movements.

“The airport also welcomed six airlines, namely Jetstar Japan, Jetstar Pacific, Scandinavian Airlines, Myanmar National Airlines, Etihad Airways and Sky Lease Cargo, which extended our flight network to 190 destinations around the world,” he added.

In December 2015 alone, HKIA set a new monthly record in terms of flight movements (35,400), while passenger traffic rose 6.1% to 6.0m. But the airport – the third busiest in Asia Pacific and among the world’s top 10 in terms of passenger traffic – is now reaching full capacity.

A new Midfield Concourse opened in December, adding 20 more aircraft parking stands. But this is just one part of an ongoing programme of expansion projects being undertaken at HKIA, in an effort to accommodate this rising traffic. The airport is also planning to construct a third runway on reclaimed land.

“Looking forward, we expect 4% to 6% growth in passenger volume in 2016,” Lam stated. “Most challenging of all, we expect air traffic movement to reach its annual maximum capacity of 420,000 soon.

“Expanding the airport into a three-runway system (3RS) is the only option for us to meet long-term air traffic demand. We will continue the preliminary work of the 3RS project, aiming to commence construction works this year.

“Meanwhile, we will spare no efforts in providing passengers with a world-class travel experience through close cooperation with the airport community and our business partners,” he concluded.

A new agreement has been signed that will strengthen the aviation links between Hong Kong and neighbouring Shenzhen.

Hong Kong’s Airport Authority (AA) has penned a deal with Shenzhen Airport Management Company that aims to “synergise the development” of the two cities’ airports.

The partnership was signed by Fred Lam, chief executive officer of the AA, and Wang Yang, president of the Shenzhen Airport Management Company.

“The agreement has been signed after many rounds of meetings between the two parties. The strengthened cooperation between the two airports can enhance the optimisation of airspace resources in PRD (Pearl River Delta) region,” said Lam. He added that the two airports will also support the medium- and long-term expansion plans of each other.

The agreement outlines various areas of cooperation between Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (SZIA). These include the establishment of a designated immigration channel at Shenzhen Bay for passengers and vehicles travelling between the two airports, and the enhancement of sea and land transport services.

The two parties will also work with airlines to develop “all-in-one” tickets that include hotel accommodation and transportation option such as flight, ferry and coach tickets.

AA said that the cooperation will provide “more options for travellers in terms of air ticket prices and flight schedules”.

At present, HKIA and SZIA operate the “Fly via Hong Kong” and “Fly via Shenzhen” services, which provide both passenger and baggage check-in services to travellers of the other airport. There are also 14 ferries and more than 80 coaches and limousines operating between the two hubs.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) achieved a strong year in 2014, setting new records in terms of passenger traffic and aircraft movements.

The airport handled a total of 63.38 million passengers last year, 5.8% more than in 2013 and the first time it has exceeded the 60m mark in a single year. Flight movements climbed 5.1% to a record 390,955, while the airport’s cargo figures also reached an all-time high.

“We are pleased to see HKIA achieving another record breaking year in 2014, which further strengthens its leading position as an international and regional aviation hub, supporting the economic growth of Hong Kong,” said Fred Lam, CEO of Hong Kong’s Airport Authority (AA).

“We have also seen new daily records in all three traffic categories last year, reaching about 210,000 passengers, over 16,000 tonnes of cargo and 1,178 flight movements. We are very proud that HKIA is one of the very few airports in the world that ranks near the top in both passenger and cargo volumes,” he added.

HKIA is undergoing a major expansion

HKIA also welcomed three new airlines in 2014 – American Airlines, Siam Air and Vanilla Air – extending the airport’s flight network to 180 destinations around the world.

And the growth of HKIA is expected to continue in 2015 and the years ahead.

“Air traffic demand continues to grow, and we expect 4-6% growth in passengers, cargo volumes and flight movements this year. We will continue to enhance airport facilities and services, and work closely with HKIA’s business partners to maintain a world-class travel experience for our passengers,” said Lam.

Located between HKIA’s two existing runways, a new 105,000m² Midfield Concourse is due to open this year, adding 20 new aircraft parking stands. And late last year, the airport also got the green light to proceed with plans for the creation of a third runway on reclaimed land. This is expected to be fully operational by 2023.
