With the commencement of the Hajj season and upcoming Eid Al Adha celebrations, Emirates is layering on additional flights to key regional destinations to meet significant travel demand during this special period.

Additional Flights for Hajj
As the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia lifts all Hajj travel restrictions for the first time in three years, Emirates has deployed additional flights for pilgrims to embark on their journey to and from the Holy City of Makkah. Ten flights have been added to and from Jeddah. All flights will be operated on Boeing 777 aircraft dedicated for Hajj pilgrims until 7 July. The Hajj flights to Jeddah will run in parallel to Emirates’ existing schedule to the Kingdom and are open to travellers holding a valid Hajj visa and, if above the age of 12, have been vaccinated against COVID-19. Medina will also be served with daily flights during this time.

This year, the Kingdom’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah anticipates 2.6 million pilgrims, reaching pre-pandemic numbers and the additional flights aim to help seamlessly carry pilgrims. Emirates has already seen strong bookings for Hajj travel from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand, Senegal, the Ivory Coast, Mauritius and South Africa.

Increased Flights for Eid Al Adha
Gearing up for a busy travel period for Eid Al Adha, Emirates has deployed an additional 34 flights to popular destinations across the region. With an estimated 78,000 people from across the region expected to travel with Emirates during the Eid Al Adha six-day break, the additional flights will facilitate passengers traveling home to celebrate with their family and friends.

For passengers traveling to the Levant, Emirates has added ten flights to Amman from 21 to 30 June, and ten additional flights to Beirut from 20 to 29 June. Within the GCC, the airline has added five flights to Dammam from 21 to 25 June and nine flights to Kuwait from 22 June to 2 July.

Emirates has recorded a 20% increase in demand in comparison to 2022 with a large percentage of its customers heading to India, Pakistan, Thailand, Philippines, the UK, France and the US, as well as across the region to Lebanon, Jordan and Dubai.

Offering a Pilgrim-Centric Experience
To help create a smooth and peaceful travel experience, Emirates has established a dedicated team to support pilgrims on their once-in-a-lifetime Hajj experience. On the ground in Dubai, an airport team will manage check-in, and Hajj passengers transiting through Dubai will be escorted from their arrival gate to departure gate, with all arrival formalities processed by a dedicated Hajj team.

On board, Emirates provides a pilgrim-centric experience that upholds the values and traditions of the travellers’ faith. Extra provisions have been made to accommodate those performing ablutions and cleansing rituals, while unperfumed towels and additional blankets will be provided. Special PAs will advise passengers when they have entered Al Miqat zones (state of sanctity) and indicate the changing of Ihram robes. Emirates’ award-winning ice system will feature a Hajj video that covers safety, general formalities and information about performing the Hajj pilgrimage and the Holy Quran channel will offer additional religious content for travellers to reflect before arriving in Jeddah. Passengers may also check-in up to 5 litres of holy water (Zamzam), which will be placed in special areas in the cargo hold.

Celebrating the spirit of Eid Al Adha
Serving its cosmopolitan customer base, Emirates celebrates a wide range of multicultural occasions onboard. The special celebration of Eid Al Adha will see passengers enjoy the traditional treats of Eid from 28 to 30 June. On select outbound flights from Dubai and all flights across the Gulf and Levant, classic Eid dishes will be served across First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy Class, including regional favourites such as chicken moughalghal, beef sajiyeh, prawn morbian and lamb madfoon in First and Business Class, chicken zurbian and lamb chermoula in Premium Economy, and kebab khashkhash, prawn sayadieh, lamb tagine, Daoud basha and chicken hamsa in Economy.

Desserts will feature a tempting selection of Eid favourites including a honey and white chocolate cake in First Class, pistachio and chocolate namoura cake in Business Class, rehash and white chocolate mousse cake in Premium Economy and coffee cake with Arabica sauce in Economy. All passengers will also receive a bespoke giftbox Eid treat from Emirates, from a chocolate choux and a tahini financier, topped with hazelnut cream to pistachio muhallabia tart or traditional ashta sfouf.

A selection of Emirati pastries and Arabic coffee will also be served in the signature A380 Onboard Lounge.

Saudi Arabia launches Nusuk, an integrated digital platform, to facilitate pilgrim journeys for visitors from around the world

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced the launch of Nusuk, the official Saudi integrated digital platform that offers all pilgrims and visitors an easy-to-use planning gateway for their journeys  to Makkah and Madinah. This e-platform aims to enhance the experience of Muslims visiting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from all over the world and facilitate the arrival procedures for visitors to perform Umrah. While religious tourism is rising, the sheer number of devotees visiting Mecca for Hajj each year bring this unique travel experience to the fore. With Hajj 2018 almost upon us, the experts at Skyscanner answer all our Hajj travel queries.

First, the entry and exit dates for those travelling on Hajj visa: First date of entry is 14 July 2018 and last date of entry is 15 August 2018. First date of exit is 26 August 2018 and last date of exit is 25 September 2018.

Where can I go on a Hajj visa?

If you’re traveling on a Hajj visa, you’re only permitted to travel to certain areas in Saudi Arabia. Responsibility for obtaining the correct visa and booking the right flight does fall on the passenger, and without the correct documentation, you’ll not be able to board the flight or receive a refund.

The three different visa types are Hajj, Umrah and Visit and where you can go is determined by which visa you are traveling on. With a Hajj visa, you must disembark in the cities of Jeddah or Madinah (also known as Medina) and are not allowed to travel to other parts of Saudi Arabia. There is also the flip side to this law that means anyone on a visit or Umrah visa is not allowed to enter Jeddah or Madinah during the Hajj period.

What is the baggage policy for Hajj flights?

Airlines all have their own standard baggage policies. However, there may be a specific Hajj 2018 allowance imposed by Saudi Arabian authorities that you must follow. These differ depending on the country you are departing from, the airline and agent.

For example, the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Washington D.C. states the maximum baggage weight is 32kg and size is 56x45x25cm, regardless of airline policies that allow larger luggage. However, traveling on SAUDIA airlines from the UK it is possible to take up to 2 x 23kg, a total of 46kg.

Any excess baggage must be shipped and to make this easier there is now Authorized Hajj cargo service centers in Makkah and at King Abdulaziz International Airport.

Pro tip: Make sure you contact your Hajj and Umrah package agent and airline directly to check the baggage policy or speak to your local Saudi Arabian Embassy.

Can I bring back Zamzam (holy water)?

Most airlines allow passengers returning from this pilgrimage to bring up to five litres of Zamzam as checked baggage at no additional cost. But it is strongly recommended to check with your airline – they may even have organised complimentary Zamzam for you. Make sure your Zamzam bottle is properly packed in the special plastic Zamzam bag to avoid leakage.

What time should I check in at the airport after Hajj?

When it comes to checking-in at Jeddah and Madinah after completing the pilgrimage, there are different rules for different airlines. In general, passengers traveling on international airlines, such as Emirates, must report to the airport check-in desk six hours before the scheduled departure time. Travellers flying on a Saudi based airline, such as SAUDIA, need to arrive at the airport three hours before departure time. However, as the rules vary so much from airline to airline, national or international, please always consult with your airline directly to make sure you arrive at the airport at the correct time.

Pro tip: During the Hajj period airports can be extremely busy and lines long so it is advised to be prepared for a lot of waiting around.

Is photography allowed?

There are certain rules regarding photography that you should follow in Saudi Arabia. It is forbidden to take photos of any government buildings, military installations or palaces, so make sure you know what is around you before taking a snap. Authorities also advise avoiding taking photos of Saudi locals. Binoculars can be confiscated if brought into Saudi, so best to leave those at home.

What is this year’s best Hajj app?

Manasikana is a handy app to provide guidance when on a Hajj journey. It has been updated for Hajj 2018 and is now available in Arabic, English, Urdu and Malay, and offers a variety of features, such as maps of Makkah, Jeddah, Madinah and Holy sites, highlighting places of interest.

The map feature helps to identify current location and provides the journey time to the next destination. There are also safety features such as important telephone numbers and allows family and friends to track your location in real time. You can even find prayer times, weather conditions, currency conversion and news.

Malaysia Airlines has confirmed that its new pilgrimage charter airline will commence operations in the third quarter of 2018.

The new subsidiary will utilise the national carrier’s fleet of six Airbus A380s, which will be reconfigured to provide a greater number of seats on the high-volume holy routes.

At present, Malaysia Airlines’ A380s feature just 494 seats in three classes, but this is expected to increase to approximately 700 seats under the new plans.

The airline will focus on providing charter services from Kuala Lumpur to Saudi Arabia, to cater for rising demand for Muslim pilgrims wishing to attend the Hajj and Umrah. But while the new airline will be based in Kuala Lumpur, allowing it to tap into the large Muslim populations in Malaysia and neighbouring Indonesia, Malaysia Airlines said it expects that “a significant portion” of the airline’s passengers will “originate outside Southeast Asia”.

“The airline will be the world’s first ultra-high capacity value airline. It will offer high quality service with low seat costs to customers worldwide,” the carrier said in a statement.

The formation of the new airline is being made possible by the delivery of Malaysia Airlines’ new fleet of Airbus A350s, which will be deployed on the carrier’s scheduled long-haul routes. The first of these 286-seat twin-aisle jets is scheduled to be delivered in October 2017.

The airline’s CEO, Peter Bellew, also said that the airline is now “seeking more wide-body aircraft on short- to medium-term leases to facilitate growth”.

With 25,000 pilgrims estimated to be heading overseas to Saudi Arabia from the UK for Hajj in the next few days and spending up to £125 million on their travel arrangements, ABTA is warning all visitors about the dangers of booking with fraudulent or disreputable travel companies. Hajj returns

Every year sees individuals paying for travel arrangements that are sub-standard, or in the worst cases, non-existent, leaving victims out of pocket by thousands of pounds.

This year, Hajj takes place between 9 and 14 September. With large sums being paid for specialist Hajj flights and accommodation arrangements, pilgrims need to be aware of the dangers of booking with disreputable travel companies.

ABTA recommends the following simple steps to minimise the risk of being the victim of fraud:

  • Do your research – Don’t book without carrying out some basic checks on your travel company.
  • Make sure your travel company is a member of a recognised trade body, such as ABTA – The Travel Association, whose Members follow a strict code of conduct and who financially protect package holidays.
  • If you are booking a flight based package, make sure your travel company is ATOL protected by the Civil Aviation Authority, and that you receive an ATOL (Air Travel Organisers’ Licence) certificate as soon as you exchange money.
  • Get everything in writing.
  • Do not pay the travel company by cash or by direct bank transfer into an individual’s account.

John de Vial, ABTA’s director of Financial Protection, said: “Every year, fraudsters target pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj. Large sums of money can be at stake as flights and accommodation are at a premium due to massive demand. Fraudsters play on the fact that pilgrims are often not aware of the strict regulations in place governing the sale of package travel arrangements in the UK. In other cases, even when travel arrangements are provided, they are of a much lower standard than promised and in the worst cases the arrangements simply do not exist and pilgrims are left with no course of redress.”

Pilgrims are encouraged to check on www.abta.com or with the CAA on 020 7453 6700 if the company they are booking with is ABTA or ATOL protected.

Victims of Hajj fraud should report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or at www.actionfraud.police.uk.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has released a visual guide to Hajj to help guests who are embarking on the holy Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah.

This infographic, produced in collaboration with the Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower Hotel, is designed to help guests prepare for Hajj, particularly young Muslims who may be performing the pilgrimage for the first time.

The guide offers advice on the most important things to pack; how to get to Makkah; and what to expect when you are there. It also provides very personal quotes from young Muslims of their “experience of a Hajj”:

“The day in Arafāt – the main part of the Hajj, is the time for reflection and supplications, so it’s a very emotional time. I chose to be away from the group. That was my time, I didn’t really want to be with anybody. I kept myself to myself and had my conversations with God there,” said one young pilgrim.

As the largest annual gathering of people in the world, the holy Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj must be carried out by all adult Muslims at least once in their lifetime if they are financially and physically able. The event occurs from the 8th to the 13th of Thu Elhijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, following a very specific itinerary during this five-day period.

According to the Quran, elements of the Hajj can be traced back to around 2,000 BCE, the time of Abraham, although, the present pattern of Hajj was established by the prophet Muhammad. The four main locations a pilgrim on the Hajj can expect to visit are Masjid Al Haram – Ka’aba, Jabel Arafāt, Muzdalifah and Mina respectively.

It is thought the effects of Hajj on Islamic faith are extremely positive. Increased unity within the Islamic world is not accompanied by antipathy toward non-Muslims. Instead, Hajjis show increased belief in peace, and in equality and harmony among adherents of different religions. The evidence suggests that these changes are likely due to exposure to and interaction with Hajjis from around the world, rather than to a changed social role of pilgrims upon return.

The guide is available for download from the Fairmont website.

Air India is being sued for US$97.7 million for an alleged breach of its Hajj flight contract with US-based Dynamic International Airways.

Dynamic has lodged the lawsuit against the Indian national carrier in the New York Federal Court, relating to the carriage of Muslim pilgrims from India to Saudi Arabia in 2013 and 2014.

The US-based airline claims that it carried 47,976 Hajj passengers for Air India in 2014 and around 6,000 in 2013, under a sub-contracting arrangement. It also asserts that Air India owes it more than US$8.8m.

These outstanding payments are expected to cause the termination of the sub-contracting arrangement, according to Dynamic, which it claims will lead to lost future revenue.

Dynamic said it had a “reasonable expectation” that it would generate revenues of around US$42m per year for Hajj flights in 2015 and 2016. “Because of Air India’s (anticipatory) breach of contract, Dynamic has lost expectation damages of not less than US$84 million,” it added.

FRHI Hotels & Resorts is fast gearing up to cater for increased number of independent Gulf travellers in Makkah, as the holy city prepares for a surge of visitors during Hajj.

Ahmed Hozaien, managing director for FRHI in Makkah, said that part of the FRHI’s overall growth strategy is to increase proportion of guests who book directly from the hotels. The current level is 40%.”

Many of these independent travellers come from within Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, and tend to book all year round, not just during the peak holy periods of Hajj and Ramadan.

“Our goal is to increase number of room sales from individual guests’ category who book directly without using a tour agent or travel office,” said Hozaien.

The Fairmont and Raffles hotels in Makkah have welcomed more than 2.5 million pilgrims since opening five years ago.

FRHI Makkah has seen a marked increase in occupancy and revenue in the first half of this year, compared with 2014, according to Hozaien.

Last year, the company announced plans to increase its presence in Saudi Arabia with opening of Fairmont Riyadh Business Gate (2016), Swissôtel Jeddah (2017), Raffles Jeddah (2018), and Fairmont Jeddah (2018).

Comprising 5,154 rooms across five towers, Holiday Inn Makkah Abraaj Al Tayseer will take the site of the current Abraaj Al Tayseer pilgrim accommodation and open in phases. Nearly 1,650 rooms across two towers are due to open its doors to guests by the end of this year. The remaining 3,500 rooms are slated to open over the following three years.

The opening of Holiday Inn Makkah Abraaj Al Tayseer will cater to the growth in pilgrim visits to Makkah.

Infrastructure under development, such as the expansion of Jeddah’s airport, which is expected to increase its capacity to 80 million passengers by 2035, will further boost pilgrim numbers in the coming years.

Globally there are nearly 1,200 Holiday Inn hotels and resorts (220,000 rooms) open and 267 hotels (53,000 rooms) due to open within the next three to five years.

Participants in the Madinah Forum for Labour Market and Employment expect business generated by Hajj and Umrah to reach SAR6.22 billion.

This expectation is following completion of expansion of the Grand Mosque in Makkah and Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah.

They expect returns to hit SAR48 bn by 2020, as reported by Al-Madinah. The Madinah Forum had concluded its deliberations recently after two sessions that dealt with eight themes.

Several recommendations were presented including establishment of a specialist center for human development and training, studies for labour market and employment in Madinah. They include the ministries of labor, civil service and planning and national economy and human resources development fund.

A working team will be formed and it will include members with specializations and experience from the private sector including all sectors of the labor market and employment in the region as well as officials from government departments concerned with organizing the labor market. This will be a joint effort so a special strategy that is in conformity with the region’s labor market can be employed. The Madinah governorate will organize the team with participation of the chamber.

The recent analysis of the performance of Middle East hotels across the Hajj and Eid Al Adha period showed an impact, according to STR Global. At the start of Hajj, Makkah was able to achieve RevPAR of nearly SAR2,000. In Medina, hotels saw RevPAR increases beyond SAR1,100 for three consecutive days.

The three-day celebration period of Eid 2014 saw year-over-year declines in occupancy (-3.9%), ADR (-6.5%) and RevPAR (-10.2%). The average RevPAR across the three days was AED911.40 in 2014 and AED1014.60 in 2013. Comparing the holiday periods (six days in 2013 and four days in 2014), saw occupancies and ADR decline by 1.3% and six percent, respectively.

In Muscat occupancy rose during the 10-day period of Eid Al Adha, peaking at 81% percent. Total RevPAR experienced a year-over-year decline of 2.5%, also resulting from the difference in days when Eid occurred. Despite occupancy and RevPAR declines when compared to 2013 levels, ADR saw a slight increase of 3.2% during the three days of Eid; averaging at OMR112.

Saudi Arabia to gain in revenue from Hajj movement

Hajj revenues this year are projected to reach almost SAR32 billion, a three-percent increase from the SAR31 bn spent in 2013, according to a recent study conducted by Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI).

The study also forecast that around 1.4 m foreign pilgrims and 600,700 domestic pilgrims would perform Hajj this year. These figures indicate that 70% of Hajj pilgrims come from abroad, contributing to a whopping 89% of revenues, or SAR28 bn.

This year’s estimates are similar to last year’s figures based on the fact that government restrictions on number of pilgrims remain in place due to ongoing expansion works at the Grand Mosque. The number of pilgrims from foreign countries was cut by 20%, while number of domestic pilgrims was scaled down by more than half to make way for the revamp.

Pilgrim spending was also estimated according to average expenditure in 2009. Foreign pilgrims had spent an average of just over SAR17,000 each and domestic pilgrims around SAR5,000 each that year.

The latest figures are a 21-percent decline from the 1.75 million foreigners that performed Haj in 2012 and a 57-percent decline from the 1.4 million locals who had traveled to Makkah for the pilgrimage that same year. Naturally, pilgrims coming from economically advanced countries tend to spend more than people coming from poorer countries.

A comprehensive 30-year plan to expand the Mina valley so as to accommodate seven million pilgrims has got the approval of the Board of Senior Ulema, as reported by Al-Eqtisadiah Arabic daily. The plan is part of the scheme to develop Makkah and the holy sites which was approved by the Council of Ministers about 18 months ago.

Makkah Emir Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, who is also chairman of Makkah and Masha’er development committees, said the master scheme covers the next 30 years. It takes into consideration the expected increase in population, visitors, expansion of the Grand Mosque, transportation plans, infrastructure and economic development.

The scheme envisages development of Mina mountainsides and slopes, and the first stage will cost SR100 billion with the total scheme costing SR200 billion. International consultancy companies, in cooperation with local firms, will participate in initial studies which will take into consideration the topographic nature of Mina’s mountains.

Jamal Shuqdar, in-charge of Mina development at the High Commission for the Development of Makkah and Masha’er, said the plan calls for the reconsideration of building regulations, transportation and cleaning services. The first stage of the plan will accommodate 2 million pilgrims while the second stage will add another 5 million pilgrims. The development scheme will be implemented in different stages so as not to interrupt the intervening Haj seasons.

“The central axis will be linked to a tunnel that will include all necessary services such as cleaning, emergency and others. The development scheme will include six areas, each will have its own transportation, safety and cleaning services. These six areas will be linked through separate routes to the levels of Jamarat and to the Grand Mosque. Each area will also be served with its own transportation services including trains, buses and suspended pedestrian bridges,” he said.

The master scheme will provide business opportunities to Makkah residents and create over 100,000 jobs in hospitality, transportation and food sectors. Environment-friendly transportation systems will be used to minimize the pollution of around 25,000 buses.

Mashair Railway trains travelling between Arafat and Jamarat Bridge with a capacity of 500,000 pilgrims were flagged off in 2011 with the aim of reducing the endless traffic bottlenecks at the holy sites during Haj seasons. “The ministry plans to reduce the capacity of trains to 377,000 pilgrims this year as part of its measures to avoid repeating travel delays and other issues that arose last year,” said director general of transport at the ministry, Abdul Rahman Endijani. The train service will only be for domestic and Gulf pilgrims this year, he said.

Minister of Haj, Bandar Hajjar mentioned that there will be an increase in space allotted for housing of pilgrims in Arafat and Mina during this year’s Haj season, as reported by Saudi Gazette. The increase will not be more than 25% compared to the previous year, he said.

Hajj in Makkah
Hajj in Makkah

He said the increase is a reflection of the decision to reduce number of pilgrims from each country by 20% due to expansion projects at the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madinah. He added that in the past, a certain area was assigned for each pilgrim in Arafat and Mina and there is no intention to change this mechanism.

Hajjar pointed out that there were minor violations committed by some Umrah companies this year. However, these violations did not warrant any penalties or the closure of any companies, he said. He added that the ministry would move to its new buildings within five months.

The new complex contains nine buildings and the employees will initially be stationed in three of them until the rest are completed. He said government bodies entrusted with the responsibility of transporting pilgrims on the Mashair Metro have set up plans to ensure the smooth facilitation of their duties. This will avoid the crowding that occurred during past Haj seasons, he said.

Meanwhile, Hajjar made inspection visits to various Tawafa establishments in Makkah on Sunday and discussed preparations for receiving pilgrims for this year’s Haj.

“Families preferably travel for Umrah during the last few days of Ramadan and Eid holidays,” said Fahad Wali, chief commercial officer, Royal Jet. “Our fleet of BBJs, Gulfstream and Learjet can be customized to match our guests’ religious requirements.”

Over the last few years, the airline has observed an increasing number of travellers choosing the option to charter private jets for Umrah and Hajj flights. Flights can be booked in as less as a few hours before the departure time.

Abdul Latif Jameel Real Estate Investment Company (ALJREIC) unveiled plans to invest US$2.7 billion to develop new hotels in Makkah and accommodate growing demand for hospitality services, particularly during the Haj and Umrah seasons, reported Saudi Gazette.

Yousef Abdul Latif Jameel, chairman of ALJREIC, disclosed that his entity is developing the Jabal Al-Ka’ba project, investing up to US$2.7 billion, with almost US$1.6 billion in land and US$1.07 billion in the construction of hotels.

The Jabal Al-Ka’ba Development Project will deliver a fresh supply of 8,500 hotel rooms in a cluster of hotels over the next couple of years.

ALJREIC is also launching a new Saudi hospitality brand, Anjum Hotels, which will be operated by the company’s hotel division team, inspired by the Saudi Hijazi culture and the up-to-date quality standards of international hotels.

Anjum Makkah, the brand’s flagship hotel and the first to be developed within the project, consists of 1,795 rooms and suites and will open in the first quarter of 2013. The project is located in front of the Holy Haram and faces King Abdullah Gate after the Haram’s major extension project.

“The holy city of Makkah has been witnessing a construction boom, with the implementation of major projects to cater to the needs of citizens, visitors and pilgrims,” Jameel further said.

“Saudi Arabia is currently experiencing an unprecedented development period under the wise leadership of King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.

“The backlog consists mainly of government-backed projects, as well as others carried out by private investors such as ALJREIC, which is currently developing a total area of 54,000 sq. meters for five-star hotels in the city to help address the growing demand in the tourism industry,” Jameel noted.

“We pay tribute to the country’s directives and development plans to expand the private sector’s role in the development of Saudi Arabia and we reaffirm our commitment to further contribute to the development of Makkah in particular and Saudi Arabia in general,” Jameel added.

The Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities said in its latest report that Saudi Arabia is set to attract 88 million visitors by 2020, in line with its plans to develop domestic and business tourism in addition to developing tourism for religious purposes.

The number of visitors for tourism and religious purposes in particular is expected to reach 15.8 million by 2014, compared to 13 million in 2010.
