Qatar will reopen Doha International Airport next week, ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 that is expected to draw more than a million visitors.

The Doha airport has been partially used since in 2014 by the nearby Hamad International Airport, which has since become a major hub in parallel with the growth of flag carrier Qatar Airways. Qatari authorities did not comment on the move from Hamad back to Doha airport, but Kuwait’s Jazeera Airways, the UAE’s flydubai, Oman’s SalamAir and Turkey’s Pegasus Airlines have begun selling tickets to Doha airport from 15 September.

Low-cost carrier Jazeera Airways said on its website that from next Thursday “all of our regular Doha flights will be temporarily moved to Doha International Airport”. In a message to passengers, the airline said the change was “following the instructions of Qatar Civil Aviation Authority” and would last until 30 December.

Doha Hamad International Airport (HIA) has been named “Best Airport in the World” at the prestigious Skytrax World Airport Awards 2021, moving up from third to first place in the global rankings. HIA has also been named the “Best Airport in the Middle East,” “Best Airport with 25 to 35 million Passengers,” “Best Airport Staff in the Middle East,” and “COVID-19 Airport Excellence.”

Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport, said: “It is with great pride that we announce that Qatar’s Hamad International Airport has been named the world`s best airport at the Skytrax 2021 World Airport Awards. This is not only a truly remarkable achievement for HIA and the State of Qatar but an endorsement from our travellers for our commitment to service excellence. As we look towards the future, HIA remains devoted to boosting our efforts in providing the best airport experience to all our passengers.”

Edward Plaisted of Skytrax said: “We are delighted to announce that Hamad International Airport has been voted the World’s Best Airport 2021. Inaugurated in 2014, Hamad International Airport has rapidly become a customer favourite and moved from No 3 in the world in 2020 to be ranked World’s Best Airport this year. Achieving this honour is very much a team effort, and our congratulations go to the Management, staff and stakeholders at Hamad International Airport that help make this happen. As travel hubs worldwide have been impacted by the pandemic, Hamad International Airport was undeterred by the global travel disruptions and continued with its expansion plans while introducing additional airport health and safety standards. As the Official Airport Partner for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, we wish Hamad International Airport every success in helping to host such a major event.”

By implementing advanced technological solutions, HIA recognised the magnitude of the global health crisis and accommodated changing traveller needs for increased sanitisation measures and contactless services. At key passenger touchpoints such as self-check-in, self-bag-drop, and terminal elevators, the airport retrofitted its existing services with touchless capabilities. It used its in-house automated facial detection system to ensure that all of its employees wore masks. To protect the airport, HIA employs Smart Screening Helmets for contactless temperature measurement and autonomous disinfectant robots that emit concentrated UV light in high passenger flow areas.

Qatar’s airport was also the first airport in the Middle East and Asia to achieve a 5-Star COVID-19 Airport Safety Rating by Skytrax in 2020. The audit assessed the effectiveness of HIA’s COVID-19 policies and measures in providing a safe environment for all and recognised the airport’s commitment to operational excellence and passenger well-being.

As Qatar prepares to welcome thousands of visitors for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, HIA, the Official Airport Partner for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, is ready to create unforgettable experiences for football fans around the world. The airport will host spectacular fan activations throughout its terminals while also ensuring seamless connectivity throughout the airport. HIA’s expansion, with the first phase aiming to increase capacity to 58 million passengers per year by the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM. The second phase will begin following the FIFA World Cup Qatar and will serve 60 million passengers per year.

Qatar Airways' inaugural flight is greeted in Auckland with a water cannon salute

Sit back, relax and prepare yourself for the world’s longest commercial flight – a 17-and-a-half hour ultra-long-haul slog from Doha to Auckland.

Qatar Airways’ new 14,535km non-stop service edges out Emirates’ existing Dubai-Auckland flight to claim the dubious honour of being the longest scheduled flight, in terms of time spent in the air.

Air India’s trans-Pacific Delhi-San Francisco route remains the longest in terms of distance, at approximately 15,300km, but takes less time due to strong tailwinds.

Qatar Airways’ group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker, travelled on board the inaugural flight to Auckland and was welcomed upon arrival by Todd McClay, New Zealand’s Minister of Trade & State-Owned Enterprises, and Auckland Airport’s chief executive, Adrian Littlewood.

“The launch of our new service to Auckland is an important milestone for Qatar Airways as we expand both in the region and globally across our network providing more options and better connections to exciting business and leisure destinations in Europe and the Middle East,” said Al Baker.

“Arriving in Auckland on Waitangi Day and achieving the title of world’s longest flight for the return record-breaking service… makes this an even more momentous occasion for Qatar Airways.”

Qatar Airways will now operate the route daily using a Boeing 777 aircraft. Flight QR0920 will depart Doha’s Hamad International Airport at 0250 and arrive in Auckland at 0500 the next day. The return service, QR0921, will then leave Auckland at 1440 and arrive back in Doha at 2210.

The new route marks Qatar Airways’ debut in New Zealand. Qatari citizens, along with others from the GCC region, will be offered visas-on-arrival for 90-day stays in New Zealand.

“Welcoming Qatar Airways to New Zealand, through this direct service, is a significant event in the New Zealand Qatar relationship – opening up greater people to people and business to business connections between our two countries,” said Jeremy Clarke-Watson, New Zealand’s Ambassador to Qatar.

World’s longest flights (by scheduled flight time)

Commencing on 30 June 2017, the 517-seat double-decker jet will fly daily to the Australian city, increasing capacity on the route by 44%. The airline first started flying to Melbourne in December 2009, using a 259-seat Boeing 777 aircraft. With the introduction of daily A380 services, capacity on the route will have doubled since in the last seven years.

“As we continue to grow apace in Australia, we have seen a clear need to inject additional capacity on the Melbourne service,” said Qatar Airways’ group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker. “Melburnians will find our… quick connections via Doha’s Hamad International Airport a great and easy travel option. And our expansive European network provides plenty of homecoming options for one of Australia’s most culturally diverse cities.”

From next summer, Qatar Airways’ A380 will depart Doha daily at 2050 and arrive in Melbourne at 1720. The return service will then leave the Australian city at 2205 before arriving back in Qatar at 0525 the next morning.

The A380 offers three classes, with eight seats in first class, 48 in business class and 461 in economy. Passengers travelling from Melbourne to London and Paris will be able to fly the entire way on the A380.

Melbourne is one of four Australian cities served by Qatar Airways, along with Sydney, Adelaide and Perth, and the airline is also planning to fly to Canberra in 2017. Sydney is already served by the airline’s A380.

“This year marks our eighth anniversary of operations in Guangzhou and we are delighted to celebrate this milestone by introducing our bespoke A380 aircraft,” said Qatar Airways’ group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker.

“The Pearl River Delta region is one of China’s most vibrant trade and travel hubs and we have witnessed steady passenger growth both to and from Guangzhou over the years. Passengers from Asia can now enjoy their entire journey on our luxurious A380 aircraft when they fly to popular cities such as London and Paris via… Hamad International Airport in Doha.”

From 1 July, Qatar Airways’ A380 will depart Doha daily at 0230 and arrive in Guangzhou’s Baiyun International Airport at 1530. The return flight will then take off at 0055 and arrive back in the Qatari capital at 0400.

Hamad International Airport (HIA) recently attained the official Mapping Level of the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

This accreditation is an acknowledgement of HIA to tackle climate change and reduce the airport’s carbon emissions from its first day of opening in 2014.

The certificate was presented to Engr Badr Mohammed Al Meer, chief operating officer of Hamad International Airport. The certificate was presented to HIA in the presence of the ACI director general, Angela Gittens, director general of ACI Europe, Olivier Jankovec and regional director of ACI Asia-Pacific, Patti Chau.

As part of the Airport Carbon Accreditation application process, HIA’s carbon footprint was defined in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and independently verified. Level one of the Airport Carbon Accreditation certification recognises airports that map their carbon emission sources within their direct control. For HIA, this includes its terminal, car parks, waste water facility, airport perimeter road lighting and offices. The airport footprint will form the baseline measure for future environmental airport initiatives.

The new app will provide passengers better connectivity through the airport. HIA is among a select few airports in the world to have used iBeacons for way-finding and providing its customers with context relevant information about promotional offers to enhance their airport experience.

With a simple scan of the boarding pass and opt-in for location detection, the app provides real-time information about flight status, baggage claim, time and direction to boarding gates and food, beverage and retail offers.

The app also alerts users when walking past outlets with ongoing promotions. A global search feature matches and delivers relevant content and information fast.

The app is currently available for iOS-based devices. The future road map includes launch of the Android app in Q2 2016, further improvements to the way-finding experience through integration with the airport’s complimentary passenger Wi-Fi system.

The Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) have recently turned their attention to transit and stop over programmes to boost its tourist arrivals.

“There is an increasing number of passengers who make short visits to Qatar via the Hamad International Airport (HIA),” said QTA ‘s chief marketing and promotions officer Rashed Al-Qurese.

For two years QTA and Qatar Airways have been capitalising on these two programmes to give the latter’s passengers, who are staying over for more than five to six hours, a chance to roam Doha for about three hours through the Doha City Tour initiative free of charge.

Transit passengers, booked in hotels near HIA for 10 hours or more, usually get an opportunity to visit some touristic attractions in Doha.

“We hope to run a global stopover programme before summer season next year, and thereby increase number of tourists around that low season.” HIA has served 7.3mn passengers (including transit and stopover) during first quarter of this year.

This figure represents a 17% increase on number of passengers who travelled through Doha International Airport (previous hub) during 2014.

Hamad International Airport in Doha is on track for completion by mid-year of 2014. The announcement was made by HE Abdul Aziz Mohammad Al-Noaimi, chairman of The Steering Committee of the New Doha International Airport (NDIA). Some new details of Hamad International Airport (HIA) were also disclosed along with members of the NDIA Steering Committee.

The committee consisted Akbar Al-Baker, Nasser Al-Ansari, Ali Abdullah Al-Abdullah, Mohammed Abdul Kareem Al-Meer, Abdullah Khalifa M Al-Assiri, Essa Arrar Al-Romaihi, Abdullah Jassim Al-Meraikhi, and Saad Farhan Al-Otaibi, as well as aviation stakeholders. The event was held under the theme, ‘Runway to the Future, Gateway to the World’.

HE Abdul Aziz Mohammad Al-Noaimi said: “The completion of Hamad International results in more than an airport; it is an international transport hub satisfying all the requirements of the fast-growing aviation sector in the region. This is needed in light of the growing traffic through and into the region, driven by world-scale events planned in the next decade.”

HIA will be larger and have greater capacity on its opening day than initially envisioned. Due to increased transit growth in Qatar and the region in the past few years, these modifications were necessary to deliver an airport with a capacity of 30 million on opening day. The third phase was intended for a 2015 start but the process was accelerated and integrated all construction phases to complete the entire project in a shortened time. Progress on the project continues, with planning for construction of Airport City having started in 2012.

Qatar has set its sights diversifying its global meetings offerings by investing more than US$20 billion in tourism-related infrastructure. This investment is directed towards boosting its MICE credentials.

The state has identified the meetings industry as a key pillar of economic diversification and growth. Keeping this in mind, the country is developing venues, hotels, world-class aviation facilities and high-profile events.

Targeting this key industry is the forthcoming Gulf Incentives, Business, Travel and Meetings (GIBTM). The event is scheduled to takes place at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from 24-26 March 2014.

“Qatar’s position as a convention destination of growing global prowess is evident having moved up 49 places to reach 111th position in the International Congress and Convention Association’s (ICCA) league,” noted Lois Hall, GIBTM exhibition manager.

“A multi-billion dollar investment plan earmarked for tourism-related projects will surely promote Qatar further up the rankings and attract interest of global meeting planners,” she added.

Qatar’s travel and tourism sector currently contributes US$3.4 billion to GDP directly, the equivalent to 1.8% of economic activity, according to the World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC), but the industry’s total contribution (direct and indirect) is nearer US$13 billion or 6.7% of GDP. The WTTC anticipates sector growth of 7.1% in 2013 and an annual average of 4% growth between 2013 and 2023.

The destination is already skewed heavily towards meetings business given the industry accounted for 72% of all visitors to the state in 2011, according to Oxford Economics, plus the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) has confirmed the MICE segment is “by far the largest piece of the tourism pie”.

Infrastructure developments designed to drive more business visitors to Qatar are wide-ranging and include the US$15 billion Hamad International Airport (formerly known as New Doha International Airport), with the first phase set to open by the end of the year and the facility expected to be fully operational by 2020.

In addition, US$25 bn been has allocated for railway construction and a further six bn has been allotted for a new Doha port project to include a cruise ship terminal. The new Doha Exhibition & Convention Centre will provide 29,000 square metres of conference space when it opens in Q1, 2014, plus 110 hotels are under construction in Qatar, adding a further 19,931 rooms to the current 13,407 room inventory. Further new hotel and venue announcements are anticipated as Qatar gears up to stage– the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. To cater to the event, Qatar will build nine new stadiums and renovate three, with the 12 venues divided among seven host cities (Doha, Al-Daayen, Al-Khor, Al-Rayyan, Al-Shamal, Al-Wakrah and Umm Slal).

The Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Airways, Akbar Al Baker recently unveiled details on the nation’s airport infrastructure developments.

He spoke of how 2013 will be an exciting year and chapter for the State of Qatar’s aviation industry as the country prepares for the opening of the brand new Hamad International Airport.

The facility, built at a cost of over US$15.5bn, is set to open in phases, beginning 1 April with a select-few airlines moving from current Doha International Airport. Qatar Airways Group, which will manage and operate the new airport, will move to Hamad International towards the end of the year.

Baker also commented on how Qatar Airways looked forward to becoming a fully fledged member of oneworld. “This airport is being watched closely by industry observers around the world, an airport that will set the standards and benchmark globally in the quality of facilities, services and finishings, nowhere seen anywhere in the world,” he added.

The airport will initially have a handling capacity of 28 million passengers a year, increasing to 50 million in its final phase of development beyond 2015. The current airport will remain open to passenger services until Qatar Airways moves its entire operations to the new facility. Highlights of the new facility include over 40,000 sqm of retail space and passenger lounges, 41 contact gates, dedicated gates for the Airbus A380 superjumbo, a VVIP terminal, a mosque, cargo complex and two runways.
