Millions of Brits are ‘fed up’ of travel photos showing unrealistic, picture-perfect scenes. A study of 2,000 adults found 29% would rather see ‘authentic’ snaps showing what the holiday was really like than the ideal images.

In fact, travellers are seven times more likely to visit a destination after seeing a picture posted on social media that shows its true colours. It also emerged ‘hot dogs or legs’ pictures are the most annoying holiday photos you see on social media, according to 26% of adults.

As a result, hotel chain Hampton by Hilton has appointed documentary photographer Ian Weldon to reveal the ‘real’ side of British holidays, with a new series titled ‘This is Real Travel’. Over three days in a busy hotel, Ian captured a series of candid photographs showcasing the warmth, fun and human connection of travellers. The images range from Morris dancers in full regalia getting to grips with a waffle maker, to football fans having a post-match pint and the flurry of girlfriends getting ready for a night out. They star genuine hotel guests in action and will be used by Hampton by Hilton to celebrate the real travel moments that take place at its hotels.

“This Is Real Travel campaign.”

The study also found only 10% of Brits’ annual leave is spent taking exotic long-haul holidays. Instead, the rest goes on trips in the UK and Europe, with 35% going on ‘occasion’ travel like concerts, sporting events and family birthdays. The US, Italy and the Caribbean continue to top the bucket list of dream destinations for 2020, but the research, carried out via OnePoll, shows more Brits will be travelling to London, the Lake District and Edinburgh this year.

Tal Shefer, vice president of Hampton by Hilton in EMEA said: “With nearly 20% of Brits admitting they would like to see people using no filters for travel photography in 2020, we couldn’t be happier to launch our ‘This Is Real Travel’ campaign.”

Canopy by Hilton in Asia Pacific

In August Hilton announced that by the mid-year point of 2019 the company has signed up 120 new hotels in Asia Pacific, boosting its portfolio, of open and under development hotels, in the region to 845.

Keen to discover more I spoke to Matt Fry, Hilton’s senior vice president of development in Asia Pacific, to find out more about this wave of growth, which includes properties in all eight of Hilton’s brands in Asia Pacific, and in major markets including China, Japan, Australia and South East Asia.

TD: You guys have some exciting new properties coming up, one that excites me a lot is Canopy in Bangkok, can you tell me more about the brand and what we can expect to see when it launches?

Matt Fry (MF):That’s right, we recently announced the signing of a management agreement to launch our lifestyle brand Canopy by Hilton in Thailand with local real estate developer Lucky Living Properties Co., Ltd. We are excited for the opening of the176-room Canopy by Hilton Bangkok Sukhumvit in 2022 right in the heart of Sukhumvit, one of the most exciting business and shopping areas of Bangkok.

Refreshing

Canopy by Hilton Chengdu City Centre, Lobby

MF: Canopy by Hilton is the first lifestyle brand in Hilton’s brand portfolio, and was introduced with the opening of the Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre in June 2016. We launched Canopy by Hilton in Asia Pacific earlier this year with the opening of Canopy by Hilton Chengdu City Centre, which is thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of today’s travellers. Thoroughly researched, Canopy by Hilton is built on a refreshing, neighbourhood hotel concept based on the environment that it is in, that appeals to any traveller seeking a locally-inspired experience.

As such, no two Canopy hotels will be identical, as they are designed to draw on the life of the locale. Going back to the basics of hospitality, it offers service that is harmonious with the pace of guests, local choices that encourage discovery, and comfortable spaces that invite guests to make themselves at home.

We have a robust global pipeline of over 30 hotels under the Canopy by Hilton brand”

MF: Canopy by Hilton Bangkok Sukhumvit will be no different – upon check-in, guests will be greeted with an open, welcoming space at Canopy Central and a locally-sourced welcome gift. Designed as an extension of the lively Sukhumvit neighbourhood, guests will be connected to local art, food, drink and culture. We have a robust global pipeline of over 30 hotels under the Canopy by Hilton brand scheduled to open in the coming years, and with the launch of Canopy by Hilton Bangkok Sukhumvit, we look forward to bringing positive stays to travellers visiting Bangkok.

Truly immersive

Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre

TD: Sticking with Canopy, outside of London and Reykjavík, the majority of the brand’s properties are in the States, so what is it about Bangkok that Hilton thinks that is the right location for the next one?

MF: As a key gateway city to South East Asia and the most visited city in the world, the vibrancy, rising affluence and accessibility of Bangkok makes it a great location for us to bring new brands. Forecast to welcome more than 41 million international tourists this year, we recognize the potential of the booming tourism market of Thailand as well as Bangkok’s great sense of style which is an important part of Canopy.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi

Prior to entering any new market, we conduct extensive market and consumer research to understand what the modern traveller wants and needs. Through in-depth market research, we have found that travellers of today value truly immersive, locally inspired experiences, as well as a well-designed contemporary hotel with services and amenities that support both business and leisure needs. In a city like Bangkok, many guests are looking for accommodation options that allow them to experience the destination as a local – this is where we saw the opportunity to fill the gap together with our partners Lucky Living Properties Co., Ltd, to introduce Canopy by Hilton in the bustling Sukhumvit neighbourhood.

TD: Which property are you personally most excited to see and why?

MF: I am looking forward to visiting the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi and the two Hiltons that will open in Melbourne, one of my favourite cities in the world. The Waldorf Astoria in the Maldives has eleven restaurants and bars! I will probably need to visit twice to cover them all.

The world’s biggest travel market

Hampton by Hilton Xi’an Beidajie

TD: You have a huge number of deals in place in China, can you elaborate on your expansion in the region and why do you think Hilton continues to be so popular in the market?

MF: As one of the region’s fastest-growing global hospitality companies, we have 530 hotels in the pipeline, 438 of which are in China. We recently celebrated the opening of our 200th hotel in China with the launch of Canopy by Hilton into the market.

As China’s expanding economy shifts from an export and investment-led model to one of consumption and services, the country’s tourism sector continues to experience a major boom. The number of domestic tourists reached 2.83 billion in the first half of 2018, up 11.4% year-over-year, while outbound travellers surged 15% over the previous year to hit 71.3 million, according to the China Tourism Academy, making the Chinese economy a very important one for us. Further, China is the world’s biggest travel market, driven by its rising middle class as well as the burgeoning wanderlust of Chinese millennials.

Recognising the strong growth outlook and potential of the tourism industry in China, we are growing our business in China at a record pace, having opened 50 new hotels last year alone, our highest ever amount in a single year which we will surpass again this year. Today, nearly one quarter of rooms under construction in Asia Pacific carry a Hilton flag, a figure which increases to one third in China. We have an organic growth strategy and our aim is to continue to fill gaps with the right brand, in the right location, at the right time, by identifying the right partners and opportunities.

The world’s most valuable portfolio

Waldorf Astoria Bangkok

TD: Which of the Hilton brands enjoy the most success in this market and why?

MF: Asia Pacific is a diverse region, presenting a long runway for growth across the various segments in all destinations and vast opportunities for all the brands in our portfolio to grow. We want to be where our guests want to be, with the brand experiences that best cater to their needs. Our portfolio of 17 award-winning brands (eight of which are currently in Asia Pacific) are separate and distinct from each other with very little overlap and meet the needs of all travellers.

For example, Hilton, as our flagship brand, continues to deepen its presence in key gateway cities across Asia. DoubleTree by Hilton is also a huge success story with 60 hotels open and 95 properties in the pipeline. In terms of sheer numbers, our midscale brands Hilton Garden Inn and Hampton by Hilton, provide the greatest potential for unit growth as they perform well and the market for midscale travel continues to expand.

“Single-minded commitment”

Conversely, to meet the growing luxury travel market, we have three brands: Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, and LXR. However, these brands will be grown selectively in a highly curated way such that each addition to their portfolios is as good or better than the last.

On a whole, we have the world’s most valuable portfolio of hotel brands, having outperformed our competitors globally. This growth in brand value was largely driven by strong performance increases over the last year, as well as our single-minded commitment to forging long-standing partnerships with companies that can combine their local real estate expertise with our global pool of resources and brand equity.

Hospitality major Hilton and franchise operator Alshaya Group have announced a significant development of their ongoing relationship with the exclusive signing of a master development agreement to rapidly launch and develop 70 Hampton by Hilton hotels in nine countries, with the majority of these in the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and Russia.

With the first hotel expected to open in Kuwait in 2021, Alshaya Group will deliver 50 hotels in the next eight years, with another 20 in the development pipeline, significantly expanding Hampton by Hilton’s presence in the region.

“Growing demand for high quality accommodation.”

“We have reached this exclusive agreement with Alshaya Group, strengthening our partnership and further expanding our global Hampton by Hilton portfolio,” said Chris Nassetta, president and CEO of Hilton. “Alshaya has been an important partner, particularly as we celebrate 100 years of pioneering the hospitality industry this year, and we look forward to working together to introduce travellers to Hampton by Hilton in these high-growth destinations.”

As part of the brand’s international growth strategy, Hampton by Hilton has announced its debut in the Middle East with its largest property yet.

Hampton by Hilton celebrated its Middle East debut with the opening of Hampton by Hilton Dubai Airport, marking the largest property in Hampton’s global portfolio. The opening of the hotel is part of the brand’s commitment to international growth.

Today, the brand operates internationally with more than 2,380 hotels in 22 countries and territories. It’s in a stage of having the largest pipeline in the brand’s history and in the Hilton enterprise with 620 planned hotels in target markets.

Hampton by Hilton recently opened its first hotel in Kazakhstan, and will soon enter into Argentina, Chile and France. Furthermore, the brand will continue to expand in China, where it is the fastest growing international hospitality brand in the country.

“Hilton’s growing international female leadership representation”

Shruti Gandhi Buckley, global head, Hampton by Hilton, said: “Hampton continues to bring quality accommodations, strong value, and outstanding service everywhere travellers need and want to be. Hampton has a long legacy of delivering an incomparable guest experience, which will be led by general manager, Nayla Chowdhury at Hampton by Hilton Dubai Airport, whose appointment signifies Hilton’s growing international female leadership representation.”

Hampton by Hilton Dubai Airport provides 420 rooms and is situated close to the Dubai International Airport and the Dubai Airport Freezone Authority (DAFZA). The hotel features a rooftop gym with panoramic views of the Dubai skyline, an infinity pool and a fully-licensed bar. It’s designed with “warm and modern” interiors, flowing natural light and touches of lavender, gold, and locally-inspired artwork that can be seen across the hotel walls and corridors.

It aims to serve the region’s growing demand for mid-market hotels – particularly among millennial travellers. A recent survey of just over 1,000 respondents conducted by Hilton in partnership with YouGov, found that when choosing between two destinations, almost half (44%) of UAE travellers were likely to base their decision on overall travel cost.

“With Dubai’s vision of welcoming 20 million tourists annually to the emirate by 2020, diversifying its hospitality offering has become a major priority for the travel and tourism sector,” said Rudi Jagersbacher, area president – Middle East, Africa, and Turkey.

“Affordable hospitality without compromising on quality”

“Today’s travellers are increasingly looking for affordable hospitality without compromising on quality. They want a hotel in a well-connected location, with clean and modern rooms, free Wi-Fi, and a friendly, reliable, quality service. This is precisely what the Hampton by Hilton brand offers.”

Hilton’s expansion in China reached significant milestone last week with the opening of its first Hampton hotel in a major Chinese city.

The company signed a master development agreement with Plateno Hotels Group for the midscale Hampton brand in China in late 2014, and its first Chinese property opened in the beach resort of Sanya in December 2015. Eventually, the two companies expect to launch of more than 400 Hampton hotels across the country.

And this nationwide roll-out has now taken a major step forward with the opening of the first Hampton by Hilton hotel on the Chinese mainland, located in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou.

“China is the 20th country that Hampton has entered and… we are especially happy that Hampton by Hilton’s flagship hotel has opened in Guangzhou,” said Phil Cordell, global head of the Hampton brand.

“It represents a breakthrough for Hampton’s development in the China market. With a strong partner like Plateno Group, I have every confidence that the brand will achieve a similar success as in the United States.”

Replicating the brand’s US success in China would be a major achievement for Hilton; there are approximately 2,000 Hampton properties currently operating across the US. But it does have good backing; Plateno was recently acquired by Jin Jiang International – the Shanghai government-backed company which is now among the 10 largest hotel groups in the world by portfolio size, following its recent purchases of Plateno and Louvre Hotels.

The 223-room Hampton by Hilton Guangzhou Zhujiang New Town (pictured top) is located in the Tianhe district of Guangzhou, close to the Guangzhou International Finance Center and Guangzhou East Railway Station. The hotel includes a “multi-functional lobby”, free Wi-Fi, 24-hour snack bar, restaurant, meeting room and fitness centre.

“Plateno Group’s collaboration with Hilton Worldwide is in line with our business strategy and is aligned with our values of focusing on our customers’ needs,” said Alex Zheng, Plateno’s founder, chairman & president. “In 2015, Hampton by Hilton was warmly welcomed by investors and travellers. With the opening of Hampton by Hilton Guangzhou Zhujiang New Town, we have opened a new chapter and more than 10 Hampton hotels are scheduled to open this year alone,” he added.

China is one of only two countries in the Asia Pacific region where the Hampton brand operates, along with India.

Hilton Worldwide has signed a franchise agreement to bring Hampton by Hilton to the UK’s fourth largest airport.

The agreement has been signed with strategic developers Urban&Civic, who secured planning permission to build a new £45m 357-bed hotel next to the terminal of London Stansted Airport, following a deal to acquire a two acre site from MAG Property, the property and development division of Manchester Airports Group (MAG) – the owners of Stansted Airport.

The hotel forms part of MAG’s £260m investment plan to attract more passengers, airlines and long-haul services to Stansted, the fastest growing airport in the UK.

Work is due to start on the new hotel by the end of the year and Hampton by Hilton Stansted Airport is set to open with direct terminal access in summer 2017. It will be the largest Hampton by Hilton in Europe with 357 guestrooms.

Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president, development, Hilton Worldwide said, “The introduction of Hampton by Hilton to London Stansted Airport is consistent with our strategy of developing focused service properties sufficiently close to the airport that guests can access the terminal without a shuttle bus. This strategy has proven successful for our hotels in a number of locations, including properties at airports in Gatwick, Exeter and Liverpool, and is integral to our developments in Bristol airport and here in Stansted. With more scheduled European destinations than any other UK airport, Stansted is an ideal location at which to develop our economy brand.”

Hilton Worldwide has decided to deploy a new revenue management solution across several of its brands.

Following a year-long pilot programme, the US hotel company will use IDeaS’ G3 Revenue Management System (G3 RMS) across its portfolio of Hampton, Hilton Garden Inn, Homewood Suites and Home2 Suites properties, marking a significant expansion in the 15-year relationship between Hilton and IDeaS.

G3 RMS, which will be integrated with Hilton’s existing systems, will be used to track and analyse historical and current business performance data. More than 250 properties are already live and Hilton plans to complete the full deployment by summer 2014.

“Hilton Worldwide is committed to becoming the industry leader in revenue management,” said Chris Silcock, Hilton’s global head of revenue management, online & regional marketing. “Through the G3 revenue management system and other cutting-edge analytics, we are taking the guesswork out of revenue management and pricing. And by helping our hotel operators and owners make better-informed revenue management decisions, we are positioning both our company and our franchisees for long-term financial success.”

IDeaS’ G3 RMS is currently on limited availability, but is scheduled for full release in 2014. The solution builds on IDeaS’ existing revenue management tools, which have been adopted by 2,400 hotels worldwide, from 70 different brands.

“IDeaS and SAS are proud to partner with Hilton Worldwide to bring innovations in pricing to the hospitality industry,” said Brian Sterrett, IDeaS’ vice president of global sales and marketing. “This announcement is an important milestone in bringing our next-generation G3 RMS to IDeaS clients and other leading brands pursuing enhanced revenue performance.”
