The airline’s 5th international route was also launched in just one month of December 2023, connecting Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, with Hong Kong, the vibrant metropolis.

This addition aligns with Vietjet’s anniversary celebration on 24 December 2011 and enhances the festive spirit of Christmas. The A321neo ACF aircraft, adorned with the Vietnamese national flag, arrived at Tan Son Nhat International Airport on 22 December 2023. The airline promptly deployed the aircraft to serve passengers on various routes covering Vietnam and international destinations.

Emphasizing its fleet and flight network expansion strategy across the Asia Pacific region, Vietjet launched multiple international services including the Shanghai – Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc – Busan, Hanoi – Jakarta, Hanoi – Siem Reap, and the recently launched, Hanoi – Hong Kong route.

The thrice-weekly Hanoi – Hong Kong service, operating every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, increases Vietjet’s Vietnam – Hong Kong flight network to four direct services. From February 2024 onwards, the Ho Chi Minh City – Hong Kong, Da Nang – Hong Kong and Phu Quoc – Hong Kong routes will increase to see daily services.

To mark the new routes, Vietjet offers passengers the “Real Deal” to Vietnam and beyond with affordable airfares from just SGD80 (USD60) /one-way (including tax and fees) every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at www.vietjetair.com or via the Vietjet Air mobile application. With these exciting new routes, travellers from Singapore can now explore Vietnam’s rich culture, local traditions, and exciting cuisine during a stopover in Ho Chi Minh City before embarking on their journey to Hong Kong.

With these thrilling new routes, Singapore travellers can enjoy flying on modern and eco-friendly aircraft, offering services from dedicated and friendly crew members, and savour the rich culinary flavours that showcase Vietnamese national cuisine such as Banh mi, Pho, and more.

“We are delighted to reconnect Thailand with one of the top travel destinations of Vietnam – ‘Da Lat’, the city of flowers and beautiful natural landscapes. To provide Thai travelers with more opportunities and flexible choices to travel to Vietnam, as well as welcome Vietnamese tourists to Thailand, we have decided to resume direct flight service between Bangkok and Da Lat. In Q3/2022, Vietjet operated more than 35,000 flights with 6.4 million passengers onboard.  Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Companyfinancial statements of the third quarter of 2022 highlights Vietjet’s lead in the growth rate of domestic and international passengers, promoting local economic recovery and inbound tourism. Domestic passenger transport contributed to the recovery with the total number of flights and passengers increasing by 36% and 44% respectively while recovery in international passenger transport is set in motion, reaching about 25% of the pre-Covid-19’s level. The total volume of cargo airlifted in Q3 was 11,500 tons.

Vietjet has operated more than 10 new international routes, focusing on the Indian market to bring passengers from big cities in India’s West and Central-Southern region to the economic and tourism hubs of Vietnam, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Phu Quoc. As of September 30, 2022, Vietjet has operated 84 routes, including 49 domestic and 35 international routes.

During the first nine months of 2022, the accumulated number of flights and passengers have reached 87.7 thousand and 15.4 million respectively, which in turn surged by 150% and 225% YOY. Vietjet reports its Q3/2022 revenue of VND10,256 billion (separated) (approx. THB15.6 billion) and VND11,600 billion (consolidated) (approx. THB 17.6 billion), leaping by 652% and 337% YOY. Following its 9 months of 2022, Vietjet has completed 85% of its revenue plan.

As of 30 September 2022, Vietjet has total assets of VND 67,470 billion (approx. THB 102.5 billion). The debt-to-equity ratio stayed at 1.1, considered as good indicator in the aviation industry.

Regarding air transport business, Vietjet recorded an after-tax loss of VND 767 billion (separated) (approx. THB 1.16 billion) and an after-tax profit of 43 billion dong (consolidated) (approx. THB 65.3 million). Losses for air transport were down by more than 50% compared to 2020’s and 2021’s. However, a hike in jet fuel price at an average of 130 USD/barrel compared to the average of 80 USD/barrel in 2019 was making an impact on the airline’s business. Though the air transport business for the last 9 months has yet to break even, the airline has paid up to VND3,048 billion (approx.. THB 4.65 billion) of direct and indirect taxes and fees to the State. Vietjet is focusing on promotions, especially with international routes to attract passengers during peak season of Christmas and Lunar New Year while preparing for 2023. Vietjet is one of the airlines leading the global recovery with an overwhelming revenue growth rate of 150% for the first 9 months of 2022.

Air transport operation depends on several objective factors such as epidemics and fuel price. In response to that, Vietjet has steered toward a multi-sectoral strategy besides air transport to adapt itself to a new period of development. Consolidated profit was owing to commercial aircraft finance trade from existing orders with Airbus and Boeing amid a supply shortage in the global aircraft market. The airline also gained its revenue from investments in other business and service projects.

Vietjet is gradually improving its services and utilities, striving to enhance customer experience; promoting and diversifying revenue from ancillary services of which the e-wallet payment service developed by Vietjet has reported revenue since the end of the Q3/2022. The subsidiary company of ground handling service has recorded positive revenue and profit. Revenue from the pilot and aviation personnel training business nearly doubled the previous year’s.

In Q4-2022, Vietjet is forecast to gain higher revenue due to an expecting strong growth of passengers, especially in international markets. Vietjet has overcome the pandemic proactively and resiliently. Due to economic conditions in Vietnam, the airline could not receive as much financial support from the state as in developed countries. Vietjet has proactively expanded its business activities, strengthened its financial standing with the support of shareholders, investors, domestic and foreign partners. The company was to facilitate all available resources for transportation of passengers and goods at affordable price, contributing to the recovery of economy tourism and trade while meeting the travel demand of the people.

New flight routes are opening this October that will provide a broader range of options for travellers hoping to visit Laos, as LaoSafe certification of the country’s two airlines, Lao Airlines and Lao Skyway, will ensure that passengers can be confident of boarding a flight with high hygiene standards.

Both of Laos’ airlines have now been fully certified under the SafeFlight standard, one of a series of health and hygiene certifications under the LaoSafe programme. SafeFlight ensures that cabin crew and flight staff abide by strict hygiene regulations to ensure a clean and comfortable flight for passengers.

“The LaoSafe certification has allowed us to demonstrate our commitment to safe and clean hygiene travel standards for everyone,” affirms Sitthideth Douangsiththy, deputy director of Lao Airlines. “Building trust among local and international flyers with the certification on board, our cabin crew follow the LaoSafe hygiene standards, giving passengers the cleanest possible experience,” he added.

According to the SafeFlight standards, all airline personnel must follow health and hygiene protocols set in place for maximum cleanliness. This includes undergoing daily temperature screening, frequent environmental cleaning and disinfection, wearing masks in the airport and for the duration of the flights, wearing gloves when handling travellers’ personal belongings, regularly washing hands, and providing safety amenities to passengers.

Siviengthong Konnyvong, CEO of Lao Skyway, spoke of the company’s pride at achieving the SafeFlight accreditation. “Lao Skyway is extremely proud of earning the LaoSafe certification. Tourists can be assured that their travels in Laos abide by the highest hygiene standards,” he remarked.

Flights connecting Hanoi, Vietnam, and Chiang Mai, Thailand, with the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang will be available in the coming months. Lao Airlines has also increased the frequency of its popular route between Vientiane and Seoul, a firm favourite for Korean tourists, as well as an important transit link for other long-haul travellers. Lao Airlines also offers flights to and from major regional destinations such as Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, and Siem Reap.

Implemented by the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, and approved by the Ministry of Health, LaoSafe is a nationwide initiative designed to create a world-class health and hygiene system within the tourism and hospitality industry. Sector-specific standards have been developed for accommodation, food and beverage, tour guides, and drivers, to raise the benchmark of hygiene provision throughout the country and to build international confidence in Laos as a safe tourist destination.

With the festive season approaching, Vietjet announces the “Love Connection” Campaign – the first ever for India that offers Indian couples with opportunities to experience their dreamful “honeymoon” in Da Nang and Phu Quoc, the touristy coastal cities in Vietnam.

Lasting from 15 September to 30 November, the “Love Connection” Campaign is a tailored talent contest dedicated to Indian couples. With their own impressive moments recorded in the journey to find each other, couples have many opportunities to become one of the luckiest who win valuable awards by Vietjet.

Accordingly, the winning couples with their unique stories will win the prize of a romantic vacation in Da Nang, a coastal city that has become a magnet for tourists in Central Vietnam or Phu Quoc – the so called “Pearl” Island of Vietnam. Especially, the “Pearl” Island which is famous for its pristine white sand beaches and poetic scenery would be a destination for millenium weddings. In addition, the selected couples will have the opportunity to experience the unique services of Vietjet – an airline with 17 routes connecting Vietnam – India.

Apart from festive activities, the main event to be held in around mid-November of 2022 will also feature a jury of celebrities, influencers, and representatives of Vietjet, and winning couples. They will participate in a once-in-a-lifetime experience named the “Celebration of Love” Event on Mumbai beach. Also, they will receive airline return tickets from India to Vietnam by Vietjet as well as a resort voucher for the two. With its far-reaching flying network, Vietjet offers the winners capability to choose their preferred flight to Vietnam including Mumbai / New Delhi / Ahmedabad / Hyderabad – Phu Quoc / Da Nang / Ho Chi Minh City / Hanoi with departure time from 15 November 2022 to 30 June, 2023.

The stories will be registered until the end of 15 October 2022. Then, the winners will be shortlisted and announced by Vietjet on 24 October 2022, based on the decisions of a Jury Board. The winning stories should feature participants’ love stories with a strong taste for discovering new destinations. Participants are required to follow the offical format of a post with a picture (up to 1,000 words, and 5 photos (each photo size is no more than 5MB) or 1 video (video size is no more than 200MB).

The winners whose stories receive the most votes from the contest’s official website and related social platforms for its uniqueness will receive an invitation for being at the Love Connection 2022 award party as well as Celebration of Love event in Mumbai. They are also rewarded with a honeymoon trip to Vietnam, discovering never-before-seen paradise with luxury resort services in Vietnam.

Known for its unexplored beaches, Phu Quoc had an endless coastline with a diverse and magnificent natural landscape. With the presence of many luxury world-class resorts, rich and diverse local products, Phu Quoc has become a “bright pearl” on the international tourist map. It is a great time for Indians to get exposed to Phu Quoc city as Vietnam has officially exempted visas for 30 days. The country has lifted all arrival regulations relating to Covid-19 and travellers can enjoy a complete pre-pandemic fashion arriving in the country.

The new route is Vietjet’s third to Japan and comes following the successful introduction of operations to Hanoi-Osaka and Ho Chi Minh City-Osaka, and in response to demand from customers and industry for an additional connection between the two countries.

The Hanoi-Tokyo route will operate a daily return flight, starting 11 January 2019 with flight time of more than five hours per leg. The flight departs from Hanoi at 00:55 and arrives at Tokyo at 08:00; the return flight takes off at 09:30 at Tokyo and lands in Hanoi at 14:00 (all at local time).

To celebrate the new service Vietjet is offering 2.5 million tickets with a starting price of zero Thai Baht (excluding tax and processing fees)  for, what the company describes as,  “three golden days”  over 22, 23 and 24 August 2018.

These promotional prices are applicable to tickets on all domestic routes in Vietnam. As well as international routes from Vietnam to other hot spot locations, including Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai in Thailand; Tokyo and Osaka in Japan and Seoul, Busan and Daegu in South Korea. Other destinations include Yangon in Myanmar, Siem Reap in Cambodia, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Singapore.

The flight period for the promotional rate is September 5 2018 to June 30, 2019 (excluding national holidays). Holiday dates to note include 8 November on the Hanoi-Osaka route; December 14 on Ho Chi Minh City-Osaka service and January 11 for flights between Hanoi and Tokyo.

British based group-tour specialists Back-Roads Touring has started a new chapter in its 25-year history by branching out from its traditional stamping grounds in the United Kingdom and Europe, with the announcement of its expansion into Asia.

Taking its experience of small group and custom made tours of the highways byways, and of course, back roads of Europe – as well as canal excursions and boutique accommodations – and applied it to eight itineraries:

Bangkok & The River Kwai (five days), Temples of Thailand and Cambodia (eight days), Wonders of Thailand (13 days), Hanoi & Halong Highlights, Vietnam Adventure (five days), Vietnam and Cambodia Discovery (12 days) and Flavours of Vietnam (12 days).

“Exploring South-East Asia in a small group is something that we know travellers are seeking and with our new Asia tours, they can do that with a company they know and trust” said Daryl Raven, Back-Roads Touring general manager.

“A balance of guided experiences and to be able to explore destinations at their own leisure”

“We are committed to keeping up with market demands and customer feedback, and have always taken this on board when we develop any of our new product ranges. We know that our customers are looking for a balance of guided experiences and to be able to explore destinations at their own leisure.”

“In South-East Asia, some of our amazing highlights include experiences such as exploring Angkor Wat with a stone conservation expert, visiting rescued elephants in a rehabilitation facility in Chiang Mai, or even showing you where to experience the best sunset over a deserted beach. With our experienced guides, a Back-Roads tour in Asia is simply extraordinary”.

Raven went on to say: “We’ve seen triple digit growth from UK agents in the last few years with the majority of our business coming this way so they’re incredibly important to us. We believe that the launch of Asia will complement our Europe & UK Small Group Touring programme perfectly so we’re looking forward to working even closer with our existing trade partners and developing new partnerships off the back of this release.”

Back-Roads Touring specialises in authentic, off-the-beaten-track travel and small group tours, capped at 18 in Europe and 14 in Asia, aimed at mature and experienced travellers.

Qatar Airways has launched more flights to multiple destinations in Southeast Asia.

The Doha-based carrier has started adding extra services to the Vietnamese cities of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, as well as to the Thai beach resort of Krabi.

“The Asian market is very important for us, so we are very pleased to be able to increase our flights to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Krabi,” said Qatar Airways’ group chief executive, Akbar Al Baker. “Thousands of passengers every day already experience the seamless connection between flights through… Hamad International Airport, and now we have made it even easier for them to reach these increasingly popular Asian destinations.

“We will continue to explore opportunities to expand our global network of flights and add value by increasing services across our network in respond to customer demand,” he added.

In Vietnam, Qatar Airways has launched a new direct daily service to Hanoi, in addition to its existing daily flights from Doha via Bangkok. Ho Chi Minh City’s daily service will also increase to 10 flights per week, effective 1 January 2018. And from 1 December 2017, Qatar Airways will increase its direct Doha-Krabi service to daily flights.

The additional Asian flights follow the recently announced expansion of Qatar Airways’ existing service to Colombo and the new route to the Australian capital, Canberra. This growth comes despite the recent GCC blockade, which has restricted flight paths into and out of Doha.

In total, Qatar Airways is planning to launch 26 new destinations between now and the end of 2018, including Chiang Mai, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco and Santiago.

The airline is also expanding its fleet, with outstanding orders for more than 150 new long-haul aircraft, including Boeing 777s, 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350s.

Emirates has expanded its presence in Southeast Asia with the launch its first ever flights to Cambodia.

The new daily service kicked off this month, coinciding with the start of non-stop flights to Hanoi. Previously, Emirates served Vietnam’s capital via Yangon, but now the Dubai-Yangon service will instead continue onwards to Phnom Penh.

This also marks the first time since 2014 that Phnom Penh and Yangon have been connected by a direct air link, further developing the intra-ASEAN air network.

Badr Abbas, Emirates’ senior vice president of commercial operations for the Far East, was onboard the inaugural flight along with a number of other senior airline executives, plus business leaders and members of the media from the Gulf region. The aircraft was welcomed in Phnom Penh by a traditional water cannon salute.

The Dubai-Yangon-Phnom Penh route will now operate daily using a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Flights will depart Dubai at 0915 and arrive in Yangon at 1725, before taking off from Myanmar’s largest city at 1855 and arriving in Phnom Penh at 2125. On the return sector, flights depart Phnom Penh at 2310 and arrive in Yangon at 0040. They will then set off again at 0210 and land back in Dubai at 0540.

Passengers are offered a minimum of 35kg of baggage allowance on the flights.

Phnom Penh becomes the 13th Southeast Asian destination and the seventh ASEAN capital city in Emirates network. Emirates won’t be the first Gulf carrier flying to Phnom Penh however; Qatar Airways currently operates to the Cambodian capital as part of its Doha-Ho Chi Minh City route.

The Hanoi Opera House will start inviting tourists to learn more about its history and architecture next month.

The 2,600m² theatre, which was built in the early 20th Century, will start providing behind-the-scenes tours of its main performance hall and mirrored room. Visitors will also have the chance to see a live performance.

The tour forms part of a larger tourist package, which the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) said it had created to encourage visitors to learn more about Vietnamese culture.

“We wanted to create a package tour connecting cultural and historical sites in Hanoi that will allow tourists to experience the local cuisine and lifestyle, visit museums, and watch a performance at the Opera House. All these places are in Hanoi’s Old Quarter and near Hoan Kiem Lake,” said Nguyen Quy Phuong, director of the VNAT’s travel department.

The tourism board has also produced a series of new brochures and souvenirs aimed at international tourists.

Hilton will significantly expand its range of accommodation options in Hanoi in the coming years, following the signing of a dual-branded hotel and serviced residence complex in Vietnam’s capital city.

The global hospitality giant has signed a management agreement for a 610-key project, including the Hilton Hanoi West Lake with 240 rooms and 50 serviced residences and the 320-room DoubleTree by Hilton Hanoi West Lake. The two hotels, both of which are scheduled to open in 2020, will also add almost 3,000m² of meeting space to the city.

“DoubleTree by Hilton Hanoi West Lake and Hilton Hanoi West Lake offer complementary accommodation options that enable Hilton to broaden its reach and deliver exceptional experiences to a wider spectrum of segments,” said Sean Wooden, Hilton’s vice president of brand management for Asia Pacific.

“In addition to catering to short-stay guests, we will be able to cater to long-stay guests with Hilton Hanoi West Lake’s serviced residences. At the same time, the combined 610-room inventory makes us the top choice for large groups and major events.”

The project is being developed by the BRG Group, which also owns the existing Hilton Hanoi Opera and Hilton Garden Inn Hanoi. The DoubleTree by Hilton brand will be making its debut in the city. And Guy Philips, Hilton’s senior vice president of development for Asia & Australasia, said he is planning to work with BRG Group on “even more projects across the country”.

Hilton now has two hotels operational in Vietnam, with a further six properties in the pipeline including locations in Ho Chi Minh City and Danang.

While details of the national carrier’s planned Prague services have not been confirmed, they are likely to make use of Vietnam Airlines’ new fleet of long-haul aircraft, including the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

These modern jets have already been deployed on routes to several European cities, including London, Paris and Frankfurt.

The new route, which would likely be served from Hanoi, would mark the first direct connection between the Czech Republic and Southeast Asia. The only other Asian carriers operating to Prague’s Václav Havel Airport at present are China Eastern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Korean Air and Sichuan Airlines.

Vietnam Airlines and Czech Airlines are partners in the SkyTeam alliance and the new flights could also open up codeshare opportunities.

Vietnam Airlines will now offer one flight every 30 minutes on the main domestic route between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The increase follows the launch of a new codeshare partnership with Jetstar Pacific, its majority-owned low-cost carrier.

The addition of Jetstar’s 34 daily flights between Hanoi and HCMC, together with Vietnam Airlines’ existing flights, means that one flight will take off approximately every 30 minutes between 0545 and 2130.

“In an effort to enhance our capacity to serve customers between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Airlines has started to operate flights at even hours with an average spacing of 30 minutes. This helps passengers easily remember their flying time and arrange their working schedules in a more convenient manner,” explained Trinh Ngoc Thanh, the national carrier’s executive vice president.

Approximately two-thirds of Vietnam Airlines’ own services on the Hanoi-HCMC route are operated using twin-aisle aircraft, including the new Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Hanoi has become the location for the Asia Pacific region’s first ever Novotel Suites property.

Located in the city’s Cau Giay district, the new hotel is aimed at providing international-standard midscale accommodation for the long-stay or family markets. All suites feature kitchenettes, can be adapted to create working or living areas, and can accommodate up to four people.

“The Novotel Suites brand is designed as an attractive option for medium- and long-term stays, and is a perfect choice for business travellers and families on urban holidays,” explained Patrick Basset, AccorHotels’ chief operating officer for Upper Southeast and Northeast Asia. “[This] is the first Novotel Suites in Asia Pacific and the sixth Novotel in Vietnam, underscoring AccorHotels’ commitment to continued growth in one of the most dynamic hospitality markets in the region.”

The Novotel Suites brand was launched in 2010 and now has more than 30 properties in nine countries, mainly in Europe.

The property features a range of room types, ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments

Novotel Suites Hanoi features 151 units, including 87 studios and 64 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. These apartments range in size from 48 to 104m² and feature separate living rooms with IPTV, fully-equipped kitchenettes, walk-in closets and free Wi-Fi. Some of the units also feature private terraces.

And AccorHotels claims that the property’s hotel-like facilities “set it apart from other serviced apartments”.

These include a restaurant with buffets and live cooking stations, a rooftop bar overlooking the city, an outdoor swimming pool with bar, 24-hour fitness centre, steam room, sauna and children’s playground. And catering to the MICE market, there are also three meeting rooms for small to medium-sized events.

AccorHotels now operates 23 hotels in Vietnam, with 10 more scheduled to open in the next two years, making it the largest international hotel operator in the country.

The Malaysian airline will now operate daily services from Kuala Lumpur to Vietnam’s capital city, using its Boeing 737 aircraft. Flights depart KLIA daily at 0915 and arrive at Hanoi’s Noi Ba International Airport at 1125.

Malindo already operates direct flights between KL and Ho Chi Minh City.

“In 2014 there were about 286,000 Vietnamese tourist arrivals to Malaysia for business, holidays or visiting friends and relatives. Last year, the arrival growth was registered at 6.7%,” said Malindo’s CEO, Chandran Rama Muthy. “Our plan is in tandem with Tourism Malaysia’s strategy of boosting arrivals from Vietnam through health tourism, MICE tourism and increased frequencies.”

Hanoi becomes Malindo’s second new Southeast Asian destination in as many weeks, following the launch of flights between KL and Medan in late August.

Following a two-month renovation, Le Club bar has been expanded from a seating capacity of 90 people to 120, and a new live-cooking station has been introduced. The bar also features new furnishings and fabrics and has been designed to feel like a “1920s-era speakeasy”.

“Le Club is going to feel very much like a new bar,” said Franck Lafourcade, the Metropole’s general manager. “[It is] a bar where you really want to sit down to a perfectly mixed drink, or where you really want to uncork a special bottle. Like the Metropole itself, coming into Le Club is going to feel a little bit like going back in time.”

Le Club occupies the same space as the venue that hosted the first screening of a movie in Indochina back in 1916.

Turkish Airlines has continued to expand its operations in Southeast Asia with the launch of flights to Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam.

The national carrier’s inaugural Hanoi flight took off from Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport on Monday 27 June 2016, and Turkish will now serve the route five times a week with a stop in Ho Chi Minh City.

Every Monday and Wednesday, flights will depart Istanbul at 0220 and arrive in Hanoi’s Noi Ba International Airport at 1520. The aircraft will then depart Hanoi at 1650 and continues to HCMC, arriving at 1855. It then flies direct from HCMC to Istanbul, with flights leaving at 2025 and arriving back in Turkey at 0415 the next morning.

The routing will then be reversed every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with flights departing Istanbul at the same time (0220) and arriving in HCMC at 1620. The aircraft then takes off again at 1750 and reaches Hanoi at 1955. On the return leg, flights will leave Hanoi at 2125 and arrive back in Istanbul at 0405 the next day.

This routing allows the airline not only to take advantage of long-haul traffic, but also to serve the high-demand domestic market between Vietnam’s two largest cities. Turkish will operate the route using its two-class Airbus A330-300 aircraft.

Hanoi will become the sixth Southeast Asian capital city served by Turkish Airlines, following Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Bangkok and Singapore.

The upscale brand will make its debut in the country’s capital, Hanoi, in the fourth quarter of 2016, following the rebranding of the existing Sofitel Plaza hotel.

Prior to the relaunch, the hotel will undergo a series of refurbishments to its lobby, bar, restaurant and meeting space. The property features 273 rooms and 56 serviced suites.

We are committed to Vietnam as a strategic growth market as it ushers in a new phase of exciting developments in travel and tourism.”

Pan Pacific Hanoi will become the group’s second property in Vietnam, following the Parkroyal Saigon. After the rebranding, Sofitel will be left with one hotel in Hanoi, the Sofitel Legend Metropole.

Plans have been revealed for a new international airport to serve Hanoi.

Thanh Nien News reports that the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) is discussing the development with authorities in Hanoi, as the city’s existing Noi Ba International Airport struggles to cope with rising passenger demand.

CAAV director, Lai Xuan Thanh, was quoted saying that there is urgent need for a new airport.

“Building another airport is an emergency issue,” he said. “Strong growth in the aviation sector recently has created huge pressure on airports.”

Noi Ba International Airport was expanded in late 2014, with the launch of a new terminal that increased the facility’s annual capacity to approximately 20 million passengers per year. But by the end of 2015, the airport was already handling more than 17m annual passengers, and with continued double-digit growth being forecast, the airport is expected to come under increasing pressure in the coming years.

The new airport, provisionally named ‘Noi Bai 2’, will be developed on a 720-hectare plot of land close to the current airport, which is located about 35km from downtown Hanoi. The project is expected to cost approximately US$5.5 billion, including US$2bn for land clearance and US$3.5bn for construction. The CAAV said it would seek private investment.

Vietnam is also developing a huge new airport near Ho Chi Minh City, which will serve as a major gateway to the south of the country. The proposed Long Thanh International Airport could handle more than 100 million passengers per year if all phases of the project are completed.

Cambodia Angkor Air will expand its international network this year, with the launch of three new routes to neighbouring Vietnam.

The national carrier, which is part-owned by Vietnam Airlines, is planning to launch new flights connecting the Cambodian coastal city of Sihanoukville with Ho Chi Minh City, and Siem Reap with Danang and Hanoi.

The new Sihanoukville-HCMC route will commence on 17 June 2016, operating six times a week. This will make Cambodia Angkor Air the first airline to connect these two cities.

Then on 1 July, the airline will start flying three times a week between Siem Reap and Danang. Both these routes will be operated using Cambodia Angkor Air’s ATR 72 turboprop aircraft.

And later in 2016, Cambodia Angkor Air plans to launch a new service linking Siem Reap with Hanoi.
These new routes will complement the airline’s existing Vietnamese services linking Phnom Penh and Siem Reap with HCMC, and Phnom Penh with Hanoi.

Hong Kong Airlines will launch extra flights to two Asian capital cities next month, following the recent addition of a new aircraft to its fleet.

Having taken delivery of its 30th aircraft, an Airbus A320, last week, the Hong Kong-based carrier has now unveiled plans to launch six more weekly flights to Beijing and five extra flights to Hanoi.

Effective 1 May 2016, the new Hong Kong-Beijing services will operate every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. These will run in addition to the existing daily flight on the route, for a total frequency of 13 flights per week.

Then on 15 May, Hong Kong Airlines will launch new Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday departures to Hanoi. These extra flights will double the frequency of the route to 10 flights per week.

“Recent years have witnessed the growing demand of both business and travel between Hong Kong and Hanoi. And there has been an upsurge in demand for flight service between Hong Kong and Beijing over the years. With the support of our expanding fleet, we hope to strengthen our network by adding frequency to destinations including Hanoi and Beijing, providing a solid foundation for the airline to develop from regional to international, and to offer more choices for our passengers,” said Li Dianchun, Hong Kong Airlines’ chief commercial officer.

Following the addition of its 30th aircraft, the average age of Hong Kong Airlines’ fleet stands at just 3.5 years, making it one of the youngest in the world.

Vietnam’s main north-south railway line connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City has been severed after a rail bridge across the Dong Nai River was destroyed by a boat.

Thanh Nien News reports that a large section of the century-old Ghenh Bridge was left dangling into the water below after it was hit by a barge on 20 March.

The barge capsized in the incident, and two men in control of the vessel have reportedly been arrested. Three motorcycle riders crossing the bridge at the time narrowly avoided falling into the river.

The bridge collapse, which occurred in the province of Dong Nai, north of HCMC, has halted all north-south rail services between Hanoi and HCMC. There is no alternative route, and passengers are now being transport by bus to a station further along the track.

It will take approximately three months to repair the bridge, officials have said. The 223-metre-long Ghenh Bridge was built in 1909.

Ascott, the Singapore-based serviced apartment operator, has continued to expand its presence in Southeast Asia with the signing of agreements for seven new properties in four countries.

The company has boosted its portfolio in Bangkok, Hanoi and the Malaysian city of Petalingjaya, while also signing its first ever serviced residences in four Southeast Asian destinations: the Indonesian city of Bandung, the Vietnamese beach resort of Nha Trang, and Penang and Shah Alam in Malaysia.

A room at the newly-opened Somerset Medini Nusajaya

Ascott has also opened the Somerset Medini Nusajaya, its second property in Malaysia’s Iskandar development zone, close to Singapore.

“Southeast Asia is Ascott’s fastest growing market and second largest globally after China,” said Lee Chee Koon, Ascott’s CEO. “We started the year strongly by increasing Ascott’s portfolio in Southeast Asia to more than 15,000 apartment units across 80 properties in nine countries. Currently, about 40% of our apartment units under development globally are concentrated in this region.

“In the year ahead, we can expect to see this robust growth trajectory across the other geographies as Ascott picks up momentum to double our portfolio to 80,000 units globally by 2020,” he added.

The 181-unit Somerset Ekamai Bangkok (pictured top) and 280-unit Citadines Bayfront Nha Trang are both due to open at the end of 2016, while the 247-unit Somerset West Point Hanoi will welcome its first guests in 2017.

The 150-key Citadines Kings Bandung and 193-unit Citadines Ara Damansara Petaling Jaya will then be added in 2019, followed by the 200-key Citadines Batu Maung Penang in 2020 and the 250-unit Citadines Montfort Shah Alam in 2021.

The 310-unit, 33-storey Somerset Medini Nusajaya is now open, located close to the Gleneagles Medini Hospital and connected to a four-storey wellness centre. It will feature apartments ranging from studios to three-bedroom units, plus a gymnasium, swimming pool and children’s playroom.

“Besides growing Ascott’s presence in the capital cities, our entry into secondary cities such as Bandung, Penang, Shah Alam and Nha Trang will allow us to cater to the increasing demand for international-class serviced residences in these markets,” Lee said. “These new properties will strengthen Ascott’s position as the largest international serviced residence owner-operator in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.”

Vietnam Airlines touched down at London’s Heathrow Airport for the first time last week.
The airline had previously flown to and from the UK capital’s Gatwick Airport, but will now operate from Heathrow’s Terminal 4, alongside its fellow SkyTeam alliance members.

“Vietnam Airlines’ move to Heathrow… is good news for Britain as it secures a direct route to an important growth economy, with more frequent flights and greater cargo capacity,” said Heathrow’s CEO, John Holland-Kaye.

“As a strategic national asset, only Heathrow can connect all of the UK’s nations and regions to global markets and make it easier for Britain’s exporters to win business and attract investment.”

Vietnam Airlines’ Heathrow flights will initially operate four times a week, with two weekly services from Hanoi and two from Ho Chi Minh City.

But this will increase to five or six flights per week following the deployment of the airline’s brand new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on its London routes, before increasing to a daily service for summer 2016.

Khiri Travel has launched its largest tour itinerary to date – a 40-day journey that covers five countries in Indochina.

The new ‘Epic Multi-Country Program’ covers Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, and transports guests across the region by plane, train, bus, boat, bicycle and tuk tuk.

Accommodation includes a range of locally-owned properties, such as boutique guest houses and hotels, while attractions on the itinerary include the Shwedagon Pagoda and Bagan in Myanmar, the Pak Ou Caves in Laos, Angkor Wat and Sambor Prei Kuk in Cambodia, and Hoi An and Halong Bay in Vietnam.

Activities include visits to fortune tellers, bamboo craftsmen, local schools, fishermen, textile weavers, noodle makers and tai chi practitioners, while the culinary aspects of the trip include a Burmese mohinga breakfast, fruit sampling in a Vietnamese orchard and stops in a Hanoi market.

“This trip is designed to inspire the travel trade by showcasing the diversity of the region,” said Willem Niemeijer, Khiri Travel’s CEO. “The key themes are variety, going local and a liberal sprinkling of days at leisure for guests to venture out on their own.”

The trip also includes nine days where guests can relax or explore at their leisure, including stops at Inle Lake, Luang Prabang, Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City, and the itinerary concludes with three days on the beach at Koh Samet in Thailand.

A full itinerary for the Epic Multi-Country Program, including optional inclusions and exclusions, is now available via the Khiri Travel website. There is also a special price of US$4,030 for the travel trade.
