Passenger traffic at Thailand’s airports continues to climb, with rising demand for travel to and from major hubs all across the country

According to data from Airports of Thailand (AoT), reported by the Bangkok Post, a total of 56.2 million travellers passed through Thailand’s six largest state-operated airports in the first five months of 2017, 7.7% more than the same period last year.

International passenger traffic increased 5.9% to 31.7m and domestic traffic jumped 10.2% to 24.5m in the  January-May period, while aircraft movements increased 5.7% to 346,613.

Bangkok’s two airports, Suvarnabhumi (25.8m) and Don Mueang (15.9m), handled almost three quarters of total traffic in the five-month period, while Phuket (7.3m), Chiang Mai (4.3m), Hat Yai (1.9m) and Chiang Rai (1.0m) all saw rising passenger numbers.

This growth was achieved despite the clampdown on so-called “zero baht” tour groups from China and runway work at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Thai AirAsia has launched its first ever international flight from southern Thailand’s Hat Yai Airport.

The new service will operate daily between Hat Yai and Johor Bahru, in southern Malaysia. Flights depart the southern Thai city at 1125 and arrive at Johor’s Senai International Airport at 1400. The return service then takes off at 1430 and arrives back in Hat Yai at 1510.

Like all Thai AirAsia flights, it will be operated by an all-economy Airbus A320 aircraft.

Thai AirAsia currently connects Hat Yai with four domestic destinations: Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. But it will continue to expand from the airport later this month, with the launch of flights to Koh Kaen on 28 April. AirAsia’s Malaysian unit also operates flights from Kuala Lumpur to Hat Yai.

The arrival of Thai AirAsia also means that three of the group’s airlines now serve Johor Bahru. AirAsia Malaysia connects the city with 11 domestic and international destinations, including Bangkok, while Indonesia AirAsia operates services from Surabaya.

“Khon Kaen is considered the centre of the northeastern region and has much to offer in terms of tourism and convention organisation,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia.

The province is also surrounded by equally interesting destinations such as Udon Thani, Roi Et, Mahasarakam and Kalasin. AirAsia has announced plans to expand its operations from Hat Yai, the largest city in southern Thailand.

On 1 April 2016, the airline will add two new routes from Hat Yai, connecting to the Malaysian city of Johor Bahru and the northern Thai city of Chiang Rai. These will add to the airline’s existing routes linking the southern Thai city to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Kuala Lumpur.

“AirAsia launched its first flight out of Hat Yai 12 years ago and today operates a variety of routes,” said Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia. “All of the routes have seen steady growth, which gives the airline an incentive to add even more connectivity. We are confident the new flights will be as well received as their predecessors as Hat Yai is a one-of-a-kind city for both tourism and investment.”

The Johor flights will depart Hat Yai daily at 1125 and arrive in Malaysia at 1400. The return flights will then leave at 1430 and arrive back in Hat Yai at 1510.

The Chiang Rai services will also operate daily, departing Hat Yai at 0600 and arriving in Chiang Rai at 0815. The return flight will then lave at 0845 and arrive back in Hat Yai at 1035. This will be the longest domestic flight in Thailand.

Both routes have now opened for bookings.
