Finnair has launched a new exhibition in its home hub, Helsinki Airport, as it gets ready to take-off on its centenary journey later this year. The stylish showcase will give customers a never-seen-before view of Finnair’s vintage uniforms from the past 100 years, as the airline reflects on its history and heritage.

These colourful vintage uniforms are a visual representation of Finnair’s colourful and successful history, evolving through time as both fashion and technology have changed. Customers travelling back in time will also have the chance to win two return flights to a European destination of choice, by voting for their favourite Finnair classic via the provided QR code.

The new exhibition can be found at Gate 29 in the Schengen area of Helsinki Airport, and will be available until 30 November, allowing customers to travel back in time, before going back to the future. Earlier this month, Finnair celebrated their centenary with another fashion-focused event. The airline teamed up with iconic Finnish footwear and apparel brand Karhu to design an exclusive sneaker for its ground and air crew.

The new centenary sneaker has been designed with both comfort and style in mind, and reinforces Finnair’s commitment to the well-being of its staff. Finnair is marking its momentous 100th birthday with a year-long programme of activities, involving customers, colleagues and stakeholders around the airline, and will reveal further news in due course.

Aviator Airport Alliance, a full-range provider of aviation services at 15 airports across the Nordics, is continuing to strengthen its partnership with Turkish Airlines by signing a new contract. Under the agreement, Aviator will provide ground handling, including passenger and ramp handling, and de-/anti-icing services to Turkish Airlines at Helsinki Airport.

Casper Dons, chief commercial officer at Aviator Airport Alliance, commented on the new contract: “We are thrilled to further strengthen our long-lasting partnership with Turkish Airlines and sign a new contract. Our continued collaboration with the airline over the years has allowed us to establish ourselves as dependable and professional partners, and this expansion of our partnership is a testament to our successful track record. Going forward, we will continue putting in our best efforts to support the airline and its operations.”

This agreement is a continuation of a successful long-term partnership between the companies. Aviator Airport Alliance provides high-quality ground handling services: from passenger and baggage handling to de-icing, cargo and full-freight handling, to station services, including airport security and the Nordic Dino aircraft washing robot. Finnair has to cancel altogether approximately 100 flights leaving Helsinki Airport on Sunday 20 November and Monday 21 November. The Finnish Transport Workers’ Union AKT has announced a strike regarding Finnair’s cabin crew in Helsinki between Sunday 20th Nov at 3 p.m. EET and Monday 21st Nov at 3 p.m.

Flight cancellations and rerouting of customers began on Saturday and work continues today. Finnair informs customers of flight cancellations using the contact information provided in the booking, and does its best to offer customers a new routing to their destination. Customers can also check the status of their flight in the Manage booking service on Finnair’s website, where they can also check that their contact information is correct.

The strike does not affect flights operated by Norra, nor flights whose cabin service is provided by Finnair’s partners, such as flights to Singapore and India, or flights operated by other airlines’ aircraft and crew, for example to Barcelona and Madrid.

“We are deeply sorry for the concern and inconvenience this strike is causing our customers, and do our best to reroute our customers as soon as possible,” says Jaakko Schildt, Finnair’s chief operating officer.

“It is sad that the labour union has chosen the path of an illegal strike instead of negotiations. Throughout the autumn we have discussed savings possibilities with the unions, but unfortunately, we have not been able to achieve a result with cabin crew. We still hope to find solutions together,” says Schildt.

During the autumn, Finnair has negotiated with all of its employee groups on savings needed to restore Finnair’s profitability. Finnair made considerable losses and became indebted during the covid-19 pandemic, and the closure of Russian airspace significantly impacts Finnair’s ability to generate profit.

The primary goal has been to find cost-reducing solutions together with Finnair employees. For cabin crew, Finnair proposed changes for example to crew utilisation efficiency, layover hotel rules and to additional pay-per-hour rules for long flights, as the closure of Russian airspace has made the flight times to Asia considerably longer. As no agreement was found with cabin crew, Finnair must look at alternative measures. Last week, Finnair announced it starts change negotiations on plans to increase subcontracting of cabin service on long-haul routes.

Finnair’s traffic will return to normal on Monday afternoon, but the strike may still impact individual flights after Monday. Return flights for long-haul flights cancelled on Sunday and Monday will not be flown, and there may be delays and cancellations on individual flights.

Finnair marks its 99th anniversary as it looks ahead to celebrating its centenary in 2023. Established in 1923 on November 1 as Aero, the Finnish flag-carrier is the world’s sixth oldest airline still in continuous operation.

It has grown from its modest Nordic roots to become one of the mainstays of the oneworld alliance, offering an elevated travel experience to customers across its worldwide route network. Long known for connecting Europe with Asia across the shorter northern route via its Helsinki hub, it has sought a new strategy in response to the recent closure of Russian airspace.

With more services to North America and Southeast Asia, Finnair has adapted quickly to continue offering customers to its latest destinations great service in its distinctive Nordic style. Having carried just 269 passengers in its first year of operation, Finnair became the first small airline to enter the jet age in 1960 with its new Caravelle passenger jets.

Now a firm favourite with millions of dedicated customers worldwide, Finnair was also the first European airline to operate the Airbus A350-900, which is the backbone of its long-haul fleet. Andrew Fish, Finnair general manager UK, Ireland & Benelux, said: “We are extremely proud to be celebrating this major milestone in Finnair’s flying history.

“Finnair has established itself as one of Europe’s leading airlines offering excellent service to all our customers with our distinctive Nordic style flying them in comfort to key destinations across our route network. “We look forward to celebrating our centenary with customers next year as we embark upon Finnair’s journey into the future.”

The anniversary comes in the wake of the airline’s massive €200 million investment in an enhanced customer experience and elevated long-haul product. Recent improvements include a brand-new Business Class concept – the AirLounge – an exciting new Premium Economy cabin, as well as renewed service concepts and a refreshed Economy Class cabin.

Sustainability is at the core of Finnair’s strategy, with the carrier aiming to have cut emissions by 50%* by 2025 and be carbon neutral by the end of 2045. The airline is focussed on the future, maintaining the social and economic benefits enabled by air travel, while dramatically reducing emissions.

Plans for Finnair’s 100th birthday are currently underway, and the airline will share details of these exciting plans in course. Finnair flies up to four times a day from London Heathrow as well as flights from Edinburgh, Manchester and Dublin to Helsinki, enabling customers to enjoy quick and convenient connections, from as little as 35 minutes, to onward destinations to the US and Asia.

The carrier’s hub, Helsinki Airport, was also named as one of the Top 10 Airports in the World, in Condé Nast Traveller 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards, as it celebrates its 70th anniversary. Earlier this year, Finnair received two top awards at the influential Skytrax World Airline Awards. The Nordic carrier was awarded the accolade for ‘Best Airline in Northern Europe for the 12th consecutive year highlighting their long-standing and consistent commitment to excellent customer service.

Piia Karhu, senior vice president of customer experience, and a member of the Finnair executive board, will leave the company on 30 June 2020 as she has been appointed senior vice president of business development at future Metso Outotec.

Her nomination becomes effective after the closing of the partial demerger of Metso and the combination of Metso’s Minerals business and Outotec.

“The seven years I have spent at Finnair have been rewarding and I have learned a lot. During this time Finnair has grown a great deal, we have opened new routes to Asia, taken into use A350 fleet to serve our customers, the Helsinki Airport has transformed, our travel service provider Aurinkomatkat has become the market leader in Finland, we have developed our digital channels and our customer experience has further improved. I feel that now it is time for a new personal challenge, and I know that I can apply many of my learnings at Finnair also in my new position,” said Karhu.

Finnair’s customer experience unit will be organised so that the operative parts of the unit transfer to its operations unit, which is led by Jaakko Schildt, and the travel service provider Aurinkomatkat, the contact centres and the customer service development functions will become a part of Finnair’s commercial unit, headed by Ole Orvér. The commercial unit will be renamed as commercial and customer experience (CX) unit. These organisational changes take effect as of 1 June 2020.

This this week’s collection of aviation round up is mixed bag of new routes and announcements but, for the first time ever, it also features skateboarding…rad!

But, first news from Tibet…

Win-win

Helsinki Airport’s first Chinese airline company Tibet Airlines opened a new route from Jinan, China, to Helsinki Finland on 8 April. The new route was celebrated at Helsinki Airport after the inaugural flight landed. The route is operated with Airbus A330 wide-bodied aircraft twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays.

“Tibet Airlines is looking forward to continuing to maintain a mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation concept with Finavia and Helsinki Airport, to carry out more extensive and in-depth comprehensive cooperation in the future,” said Bai Weisan, president of Tibet Airlines Co., Ltd at Tibet Airlines.

“Just a few moments ago we witnessed the landing of the historical first flight from Jinan to Helsinki. Tibet Airlines is the first Chinese airline commencing flights to Finland and we see prosperous business opportunities for Chinese and Finnish businesses and unforeseen experiences for the Chinese and Finnish travellers,” said Kimmo Mäki, CEO at Finavia.

Vintage looks

British Airways has, for the first time today, brought together its four heritage liveried aircraft which were repainted to mark the airline’s centenary this year, alongside an A319 in the current Chatham Dockyard livery, to capture a rare image of some of the airline’s most iconic designs together.

The photos captured today also mark the fact that 50,000 customers have already flown around the globe on the four heritage liveries since they re-joined the fleet, with the Boeing 747s having travelled to destinations such as New York, Cape Town, Dubai and Lagos, while the BEA liveried Airbus A319 has flown far and wide across the airlines’ UK and European network to cities including Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Milan, Zurich and Amsterdam.

Alex Cruz, British Airways’ chairman and CEO, said: “The excitement and pride that we’ve witnessed from customers and colleagues as these heritage liveries, which we painted to mark our centenary, have flown around the globe has been unparalleled.

“Social media has been fired up with images from travellers all over the world when they’ve spotted the aircraft and as some 50,000 people have now flown on them since they arrived back in the fleet we wanted to capture a special photo to share with them.”

Can Tho? Can do

AirAsia celebrated its first flight from Kuala Lumpur to Can Tho today, making history as the first international flight to touchdown in the Mekong Delta’s largest city.

Can Tho becomes AirAsia’s sixth destination in Vietnam and follows the announcement of new services between Bangkok and Can Tho which are set to commence in May 2019.

Laddawan Meesupwatana – group head of product for the Indochina market said: “We are excited to welcome the first-ever international flight to Can Tho today. The Mekong Delta has tremendous potential with some 8.5 million visitors choosing to come here in 2018.

“This new flight will help to connect the Mekong Delta with Asean, and at the same time bring visitors to explore the beauty of Can Tho, such as the floating markets, pottery villages and picturesque canals.”

Besides Can Tho, AirAsia Malaysia connects guests from Kuala Lumpur to Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hanoi, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc, also from Penang to Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, as well as from Johor Bahru to Ho Chi Minh City.

Gnarly Munich

Top-flight professional skateboarding is a breathtaking spectacle. At the new Skate & Style event, now coming to Munich Airport, spectators will witness dazzling displays of tricks, spins and jumps. From April 24-28, the airport’s MAC Forum will be turned into a skateboarding hotspot as it hosts the South German championships in this exciting sport.

In the Club of Skaters (COS) Cup, competitors will face off in three categories, with the winners qualifying for the national final at the end of November at Europapark Rust, Germany’s biggest theme park. Spectators at Skate & Style who are up to the challenge are also welcome to grab a board and test their own skills on the 800sqm park terrain.

The four-day event will feature numerous highlights, including a program of entertainment and fun activities. As fans watch, Germany’s skateboarding elite will attack the ramps and obstacles and showcase their best moves. And between rounds of the 2019 COS Cup, local heroes will go head to head in the Titus Locals Only Competition (LOC) Cup.

Internet service giant Tencent and the City of Helsinki launched a ground breaking WeChat Helsinki mini program on Thursday 15 February, as part of the city’s Chinese New Year celebrations.

The new application offers Helsinki travel information in Chinese to almost one billion WeChat users. As a pioneer in utilising open data, the city will continue to work closely with Tencent to further develop the application.

China is the largest outbound tourism market in the world, so cooperation between the city and Tencent gives the Finnish capital a groundbreaking channel straight into the mobile devices of WeChat users. Helsinki has set itself the goal of being the most digitalised city in the world, and the cooperation with Tencent ensures that the city is already now a globally remarkable innovator in digital tourism services.

Back in September 2017 the City of Helsinki and Tencent signed a cooperation agreement, according to which the city will serve as an intelligent tourism model for Chinese outbound tourism. The two cooperation partners have since co-developed a destination mini program that offers travel information to almost one billion WeChat users.

The initial version of the WeChat Helsinki mini program allows users to access content about sights, services, events and transportation. Panoramic 360-photos, a translation service and emergency help are also included.

Helsinki uses its open data resources to take digital tourism to the next level

As a pioneer in utilising open data, the Finnish capital will continue to work closely with Tencent to further develop the application. Helsinki’s open data resources include databases for places, events and services. The aim is to build an application that provides users with comprehensive, professional and real-time information and services.

Finland is one of the most progressive and forward thinking countries on the planet, experimenting with new technology, environmental and socioeconomic policies, such as the controversial universal basic income, to solve problems and improve the quality of life for Finns and visitors.

The Tencent agreement is part of this overall national philosophy. But, it is also very much a strategic move to position it’s capital as the main transit point for Chinese tourists travelling between Asia and Europe. The agreement follows the 2015  ‘Stopover Finland’ campaign and other tourism projects, such as Helsinki Airports  smart-pay upgrades, which have helped make the city more attractive to Asian tourists.

“Helsinki’s strategic aim is to be the forerunner city of digitalisation in the near future. For travellers we want to be the safest, most functional and happiest place to visit. The Helsinki mini program makes it possible to share what’s best about Helsinki with millions of Chinese people in a way that creates a shareable, local experience,” says Jan Vapaavuori (main picture), Mayor of Helsinki.

“This is Tencent’s first overseas pilot cooperation project in the field of smart city tourism. The project provides comprehensive and practical information about overseas destinations for Chinese tourists and a more convenient platform for overseas destinations to showcase their urban charm. Helsinki wants to build a more tailored travel experience for Chinese visitors, and forming a partnership with Tencent is the right way to do that,” states Zhan Shu, general manager of the Tencent Governmental Affairs and Tourism Centre.

Finnair has revealed plans for the continued expansion its Asian network, with the launch of a new non-stop connection to Nanjing, the capital of eastern China’s Jiangsu province.

Commencing on 13 May 2018, the new route will operate all-year-round direct to and from Helsinki. Finnair will serve the new route three times a week during the summer and twice a week in winter, with all flights using an Airbus A330 aircraft.

“We are very pleased to be expanding our growing network in China with the addition of Nanjing,” said Juha Järvinen, Finnair’s chief commercial officer. “Finnair is fast becoming one of the biggest and most preferred European carriers operating between Europe and China. Next year will also mark a very important milestone in our history as we will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Finnair’s inaugural flight to Beijing and China.”

Nanjing

The opening of the Nanjing route will increase Finnair’s network in Greater China to seven destinations for the 2018 summer season. In total, Finland’s national carrier will operate 38 weekly flights to the country, flying daily to Beijing and Shanghai, four times a week to Chongqing and Guangzhou, and three times a week to Nanjing and Xi’an, plus 10 times a week to Hong Kong.

Finnair is aiming to position itself as the fastest option for travel between Asia and Europe, providing connections at its Helsinki hub to more than 100 destinations. The airline also offers Chinese meals and onboard purchases using Alipay, while Finland has launched a stopover campaign to encourage more Asian travellers to spend time in the country during their journey.

With an urban population of more than eight million people and an even larger catchment area, Nanjing presents a significant potential source of traffic for Finnair. At present, only Lufthansa offers direct scheduled flights between Nanjing and Europe, with its services to and from Frankfurt.

Helsinki Airport will expand in 2017, with additional routes planned by new and existing operators.

Helsinki Airport
Helsinki Airport

Finnair and Norwegian will launch the highest number of new routes, and there will also be completely new airlines at Helsinki Airport.

“The first summer routes will already open up in March, and new routes will be introduced frequently until June,” said Petri Vuori, vice president of sales and route development at Finavia, the Finnish airport operator.

In terms of route development, the most recent successes were achieved in the Balkans, with as many as four new flight connections being opened to Helsinki from Zagreb, Pristina, Bucharest and Varna. Finavia is currently negotiating with several airlines over opening up new routes to Finland.

“We are constantly looking for new routes and airlines, both in the east and in the west,” Vuori says.

“We are working hard to improve connectivity and to improve travel in Finland. We are also working in closer marketing cooperation with other parties, such as Visit Finland, and local travel organisations. The results of our hard work can be seen, for example, in Lapland where we received eight direct international flight connections in winter,” saidJoni Sundelin, senior vice president in charge of sales and marketing at Finavia.

Finavia’s airports have a sufficient capacity for future growth in air traffic, and they are first-class facilities according to international surveys. In addition, the ongoing expansions at Helsinki Airport aim to prepare for new record-breaking passenger volumes.

“Finavia helps airlines to open up new routes by offering competitive prices, among other things. For example, Helsinki Airport is one of the most affordable and punctual airports in Europe,” Vuori says.

New Finnair routes from Helsinki Airport

Finnair has confirmed that it will cancel more than 90 flights on Friday 17 March, due to strike action at Helsinki Airport.

The industrial action is due to take place between 3pm and 7pm, as part of a dispute over the labour agreements of airport workers.

While Finnair is not involved in the dispute, the strikes will directly impact its operations. Almost one third of the national carrier’s daily flights will be grounded on Friday, mainly on domestic and European routes.

“The cancellations unfortunately again disrupt the travel plans of thousands of Finnair customers. We sincerely apologise for the trouble and concern this is causing to our customers. We hope that the parties to the dispute will reach an agreement as soon as possible,” said Jaakko Schildt, Finnair’s chief operating officer.

In addition to the cancellations, Finnair will also change the departure times of certain flights, so that they can be operated outside the strike hours. As such, all passengers are advised to visit www.finnair.com/info to check the latest flight information.

Baggage handling delays are also expected at Helsinki Airport, and in-flight catering may be affected, although not on long-haul routes.

In an industry first, Finnair will introduce Alipay services onboard its aircraft.

As part of its continued efforts to woo more Chinese travellers, the Finnish national carrier will trial the application on its Helsinki-Shanghai route from 27 January 2017.

The move will allow Chinese passengers to pay for their in-flight purchases, such as duty-free items, using Alipay. The Finnair lounge at Helsinki Airport will also accept Alipay.

“Taking advantage of the opportunities provided by digitalisation is an integral part of Finnair’s accelerated growth strategy,” said Katri Harra-Salonen, Finnair’s chief digital officer. “The introduction of Alipay onboard is part of our commitment to continuously develop a better travel experience for our customers and to enhance the customer experience with digital solutions.

“As the number of travellers grows between Asia and Northern Europe, the need for a familiar and convenient payment platform has never been greater. This new partnership with Alipay will help Chinese travellers to make payments onboard in a very convenient manner, through a system that is both fast and familiar to them.”

Created by the Alibaba Group, Alipay’s smartphone-based payment solution now has 450 million active users in China and is used by more than 60% of overseas Chinese travellers. Helsinki Airport recently adopted Alipay at some of its retail outlets.

The onboard Alipay system will be rolled out to more Finnair routes operated using flights equipped with in-flight Wi-Fi in future.

Finnair will launch its first flights to Goa this year, as part of a major expansion of its long-haul network.

The Helsinki-based national carrier will start flying to the Indian beach destination on 29 November 2017, operating two weekly flights for the winter season, ending on 21 March 2018. Services will run every Wednesday and Sunday using an Airbus A330 aircraft.

This forms part of a significant Asian expansion planned by Finnair. Also in India, the airline will add one more weekly flight to Delhi, taking the total frequency to six weekly flights next winter. And in Thailand, two additional weekly frequencies will be added to the Helsinki-Bangkok route, taking the total to 16 flights per week,

Finnair will also add two more weekly services to Singapore, making it a daily destination, while three more weekly frequencies will be added to Hong Kong, taking the year-round total to 10 flights per week.

Goa is not the only new long-haul destination being added to Finnair’s route map next winter; weekly flights to the Mexican resort of Puerto Vallarta will run from 19 November 2017 to 18 March 2018, and services to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic will operate weekly from 30 November to 22 March. Finally, Finnair will start flying to Cuba on 1 December, with two weekly flights to Havana running until 23 March.

These new services are being enabled by the expansion of Finnair’s long-haul fleet, notably the airline’s new 297-seat, three-class Airbus A350-900 aircraft.

“With the expected arrival of four new Airbus A350 aircraft in 2017, we are pressing ahead with our growth strategy,” said Juha Järvinen, Finnair’s chief commercial officer. “These newest additions will offer even more travel options and flexibility for our customers travelling between Asia and Europe through our efficient Helsinki airport hub which guarantees a short and smooth connection.”

Finland’s efforts to attract more Chinese transit visitors has taken another step forward, with the introduction of AliPay services at Helsinki Airport.

Airport operator Finavia revealed this week that Chinese travellers can now use the AliPay mobile payment application at several retail outlets in Helsinki Airport, including Iittala, M-Box, Finspiration, Lindroos and Moomin shops. Most outlets in the airport already accept China UnionPay.

“Chinese passengers are the most rapidly growing customer group at Helsinki Airport, and the group that use the most money. We work hard to offer them the best possible service experience. Familiar and easy payment options increase the feeling of smooth and safe travel for Chinese passengers,” said Finavia’s director of commercial services, Elena Stenholm.

“As far as we know, the only other airports accepting AliPay are Munich and Frankfurt. Seven commercial service points have now adopted it at Helsinki Airport, and many others are interested.”

Finland is positioning Helsinki as the fastest transit point for Chinese passengers travelling to and from Europe. Last year it also introduced the ‘Stopover Finland’ campaign, offering a range of short-stay packages for Chinese and other Asian travellers.

Visit Finland used this week’s ITB Asia event in Singapore to officially launch its Stopover Finland campaign.

Aimed at encouraging Asian travellers to pay a visit to Finland while travelling to and from Europe with Finnair, the campaign has been gradually been introduced to the Asian market throughout 2016, prior to its official launch this week.

Speaking to Travel Daily at ITB Asia on Wednesday, Heli Mende, Stopover Finland’s program director, explained how the country was promoting the initiative to the Asian travel trade.

“We first targeted travel agents and tour operators in China with our Visit Finland roadshow at the end of May, and then in September we did the same in Japan and Korea. And now we are here at ITB Asia and we hope to get our message across to the whole of Asia,” Ms Mende said.

Heli Mende

“We’ve done search engine optimisation in China, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong, and Finnair has also done its own stopover marketing campaign in Japan and China, so we are working on many fronts.”

Visit Finland has also spent the last 12 months developing a series of experiences for stopover visitors, with more than 100 now available.

And while the most popular option is still a simple one-night hotel stay in Helsinki, Ms Mende revealed that other more niche experiences are now being offered. One of these allows guests to go jogging around Helsinki in the company of a guide, as Ms Mende explained: “So you can change into your running clothes at the gym and go jogging around Helsinki, then return to the gym, have a sauna and a shower, get back into your business clothes and continue on your way,” she said.

The programme also offers the opportunity to explore further afield in Finland, and Ms Mende revealed that, according to Visit Finland’s online data, the Northern Lights generates a lot of interest.

“There are lots of clicks for any package and service featuring the Northern Lights. But of course they are not the cheapest [packages] so people hesitate before buying them. But I think it will come,” she said.
Santa Claus is “always popular”, according to Ms Mende, and easily accessible; from Helsinki it’s only a one-hour flight to Rovaniemi – the “official home” of Santa Claus. “So you can do that in one day,” she added.

Finnair now flies its brand new fleet of Airbus A350s to five Asian cities

While the Stopover Finland campaign is still in the early stages, Visit Finland has already seen a 23% jump in Asian travellers stopping at Helsinki for more than 24 hours in 2016. Overall visitor numbers to Finland have increased by about the same amount.

“We have very high hopes for next year,” Ms Mende said. “China and Japan are the biggest [source markets], and South Korea is increasing. Singapore is still very small in terms of numbers, but the growth is big – 44% from January to July this year compared to last year. Indonesia is interesting; there is some growth and we’re following that, and numbers are growing from Australia as well.

“One trend is clear: that Finland and the Nordic countries are becoming more and more interesting for Asian travellers,” she concluded.

The stopover campaign is being driven by Finnair’s strategy of providing an east-west bridge between Europe and Asia. Utilising its brand new fleet of Airbus A350 aircraft, which are now flying to five Asian cities – Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore and Bangkok – the national carrier is aiming to double its Asian passenger traffic by 2020.

Finnair has unveiled plans to launch more flights to Asia, including its first ever Airbus A350 services to Tokyo.

The Helsinki-based carrier will add four more weekly flights to the Japanese capital’s Narita Airport next summer, using its new 297-seat A350. These will operate from 5 June to 27 October 2017 and will complement Finnair’s existing daily A330 flights on the route.

Finnair will also add three more A350 flights to its Helsinki-Hong Kong route between June 6 and October 28 next year. Currently, the airline operates daily flights to and from Hong Kong, so the overall frequency will rise to 10 flights per week, all using the A350.

And the Finnish national carrier has also revealed that its new seasonal route to Guangzhou will return in 2017 with four weekly flights operated using an A330 aircraft. This route first commenced in May 2016 as part of a double Asian launch with Fukuoka.

“With increased frequencies for Tokyo and Hong Kong on the A350, we are now tapping into the growth of Asia-Europe traffic and increasing our presence in cities that have been popular with our customers in recent years,” said Juha Järvinen, Finnair’s chief commercial officer.

“It’s been a year since we received our very first Airbus A350, and with seven aircraft operating in our network, we look forward to having even more customers flying on this great aircraft.”

Next year, Finnair is expected to receive four more A350s, all of which will come equipped with three cabin classes – business, premium economy and economy. At present Finnair operates the A350s to five Asian cities: Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Bangkok and Singapore.

Finnair’s expansion strategy is focused on tapping the Asian market and positioning Helsinki as a convenient transit destination for Asian passengers flying to and from Europe. In the first nine months of 2016, Finnair carried 1.35 million passengers on its Asian routes, up 5.9% year-on-year.

Finnair has revealed plans to add more flights to the capital cities of England, Scotland and Ireland.

The Helsinki-based airline will raise the frequency of its new Edinburgh service to five weekly flights for summer 2017, up from three per week in 2016, while services to Dublin will increase from six to nine per week.

The Edinburgh route will be served by 138-seat Airbus A319 aircraft, while a mix of A319s and 100-seat Embraer E190 regional jets will be deployed to Dublin.

Finnair noted that both the Edinburgh and Dublin routes offer convenient connections to destinations across Asia, some of which are now being served by its brand new fleet of Airbus A350 aircraft.

The airline will also add a fifth daily flight to London Heathrow from 5 October 2016, using the 297-seat A350, and this service will continue for summer 2017.

“We are pleased to announce these enhancements, due to passenger demand, to our summer 2017 schedule between the UK, Ireland and Helsinki. Therefore allowing passengers even greater flexibility to take advantage of our award winning service and excellent connections to Asia,” said Andrew Fish, Finnair’s sales director for the UK, Ireland & Benelux.

Finnair has also added four new short-haul routes to its summer 2017 schedule. Between 11 April and 28 October, the airline will fly direct from Helsinki to Reykjavik, Corfu, Menorca and Ibiza.

Finland has revealed the next stage of its Stopover Finland programme, through which it aims to attract more Asian travellers to the country.

Visit Finland announced this week that Finnish travel agency Matka-Vekka will begin bundling the services of Finnish tourism and travel companies into stopover packages, to be sold to Asian tourists.

Initially 50 packages will be available and promoted via the Visit Finland website. Matka-Vekka is also building its own stopover travel packages, which will be launched in spring 2016.

“Finding a partner will expedite the progress of the Stopover Finland programme. Now we can truly begin to tackle the challenges of service and product distribution and make it easier to find stopover services,” said Heli Mende of Visit Finland.

“We can increase the income from tourism by building attractive packages ranging from a layover of just a few hours to a few days’ stopover for passengers travelling to their final destination via Finland.”

The Stopover Finland programme aims to leverage Finnair’s expanded operations in Asia. The national carrier is deploying its brand new Airbus A350 aircraft on a series on key Asian routes, including Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore, and will launch new flights to Guangzhou and Fukuoka in 2016.

To take advantage of the expected rise in Asian passengers transiting at Helsinki Airport, the Stopover Finland programme is aiming to increase the number of passengers who actually stop in Finland. At present, only 4% of passengers flying with Finnair from Asia visit Finland during their journey.

The overall target is to increase the overnight stays of Asian tourists in Finland by 45% and raise tourism revenues by EUR80 million (US$87m) by 2018. For this goal to be achieved, around 300 Asian travellers need to stay overnight in Finland each day.

Finnair has entered the “next phase” of its 10-year strategy, which is focused on driving more traffic on Asian routes.

In 2010, the airline outlined its intention to double its Asian traffic by 2020, using its Helsinki base as a hub for passengers connecting between destinations in Europe and Asia. And for the next phase of its plan, running from 2015-17, Finnair said it will focus on “intercontinental growth with [a] Northeast Asia focus”.

“The core of Finnair’s strategy is taking advantage of the growing demand for traffic between Europe and Asia,” the company said in a statement. “The strategy is based on the growing markets in Asia, fast connections between Europe and Northeast Asia, quality service, and cost-efficient, punctual operations.

“Helsinki’s geographical location provides Finnair with a natural competitive advantage, as the fastest routes between many destinations in Europe and megacities in Asia go through Helsinki,” it added.

Finnair will continue to enhance its Asian operations later this year, with the deployment of its brand new Airbus A350 aircraft to several destinations in the region, including Shanghai, Beijing, Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The investment is part of Finavia’s 900 million euro development programme, aiming to strengthen Helsinki Airport’s position as a transfer airport in Northern Europe.

The renovation, carried out between May and early August, will reduce Helsinki Airport’s runway capacity.

However, it will not have major impact on traffic volumes during the summer and all flights with wide-body aircraft and the highest-volume routes in Europe will be operated as usual, the airport said. There is an aim to serve 20 million yearly passengers by 2020.

Helsinki-based carrier wants to market itself as fastest one-stop route between Europe and Asia

Finnair has confirmed that expanding in Asia will remain at the centre of its corporate strategy for the coming years.

Following its annual review, Finnair’s board of directors approved the airline’s Asian strategy, which includes the target of doubling its Asian revenues by 2020, compared to 2010 levels, and using Helsinki’s geographic location to market Finnair’s services as the fastest one-stop routes between Europe and Asia.

“By taking advantage of the growth of Asian markets Finnair has the ability to grow… if it succeeds in its ongoing structural change and cost saving programme,” the company said following the review. “Finnair’s long-term target is 6% operational profit, which would allow the company to invest in the future and provide a return on capital employed higher than its cost,” it added.

Helsinki-based carrier wants to market itself as fastest one-stop route between Europe and Asia
Helsinki-based carrier wants to market itself as fastest one-stop route between Europe and Asia

To achieve this however, Finnair noted that it needs to improve infrastructure and connectivity at Helsinki Airport, and operate without “bottlenecks”.

“Finnair’s home base at Helsinki Airport has an important role in Finnair’s strategy. As part of its hub development, Finnair will examine different options… so that Helsinki Airport can be utilised as flexibly and cost-efficiently as possible when traffic increases.”

The airline also is also investing in a new long-haul fleet, including firm orders for 11 new Airbus A350s, deliveries of which are due to start in the second half of 2015. These will replace Finnair’s existing A340s, offering greater capacity and better fuel economy.

“By implementing its strategy, Finnair aims at being able to determine its own future in the rapidly changing market and consolidating industry,” the airline concluded.

Finnair currently operates from Helsinki to 12 destinations in seven Asian countries, and plans to launch new scheduled flights to Krabi and Phuket later this year. The airline also recently became part of BA and JAL’s joint venture between Europe and Japan

Finnish airport operator Finavia has announced a series of environmental improvements at Helsinki Airport.

The company revealed that its carbon dioxide emissions were cut significantly in 2011, by 2,474 tonnes compared to the previous year. This corresponds to an emissions reduction of 0.4 kg per passenger, or the amount of fuel transported by 23 container trucks. The reduction was achieved through a range of measures including replacing the airport’s heating and lighting systems and the roll-out of electric cars.

“Air traffic amounts to 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions. About 5% of this is caused by airport activities. Even though this is a relatively small share in the entire sector’s emissions, Finavia wants to contribute to emissions reduction at its airports,” said Mikko Viinikainen, Finanvia’s Senior Vice President of Environmental Management. “This deals with concrete steps: the achieved emissions reduction was implemented by making the airport’s energy consumption more efficient, by adjusting the heating system, optimising the lights and by providing the staff with training on economical driving habits.”

Helsinki Airport is one of 59 global airports to have been accepted into the international Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme.
