IHG Hotels & Resorts, one of the world’s leading hotel companies,  announces the opening of Holiday Inn Express Dresden Zentrum – its first together with ownership group LRO Hospitality, and its first in Continental Europe with longstanding partners Atlas Hotels.

The hotel marks IHG’s first conversion property for the Holiday Inn Express brand in Germany, which will result in a full rebrand to a 306-guest room hotel in the heart of the city.

Through its rebranding and refurbishment, Holiday Inn Express Dresden Zentrum showcases the brand’s latest design concepts to deliver more where it matters most for on-the-go guests. A pet-friendly property, during each stay, guests can enjoy the Express Start breakfast included in every room rate, as well as guest rooms featuring power showers, flat screen televisions, workspace, a pillow menu and complimentary Wi-Fi.

The property is walking distance from Dresden Altstadt, or old town, home to the city hall, state parliament, Old Masters Picture Gallery and Semper Opera House. A hub for shopping food and drink, the city is also famed for having Germany’s oldest Christmas market.

Irish based PREM Hospitality has signed a multiple development agreement (MDA) with InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG). The deal will see PREM Hospitality sign franchise agreements for up to 10 hotels across Belgium, Netherlands and Germany, the first of which will be the Holiday Inn Express in Antwerp which is due to open in 2021.

Further properties under this agreement will come online over the next five years. PREM Hospitality currently operates 14 hotels in the Benelux region and this deal could add a further 1,000 rooms to its portfolio.

Holiday Inn has announced the launch of its new 10 million pound property, the Holiday Inn Express Bridgwater, in the quaint and historic market town of the same name in Somerset.

Featuring 138 guest bedrooms, a spacious bar and restaurant, two meeting rooms and on-site car parking, the business orientated short stay opened less than a year after the site’s construction was first unveiled.

Neil Taylor, chief operating officer at management company RBH, commenting on the new build property — found in the Regional Rural Business Centre in Bridgwater — said:

“We are proud to mark the launch of Holiday Inn Express Bridgwater, the first of five new hotel openings this year for RBH. Our reputation for operating properties under the Holiday Inn Express brand speaks for itself. With almost 20 counted within our growing portfolio, I am confident that Holiday Inn Express Bridgwater will go from strength to strength now it is welcoming guests.”

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has inaugurated the Holiday Inn Express Gurgaon Sector 50, the first Holiday Inn Express hotel in Gurugram, India.

As a part of IHG’s partnership with SAMHI for a portfolio of 14 Holiday Inn Express hotels, this property will be the first to open its doors to guests on 15 September. The hotel offers 205 rooms, an enhanced “Great Room”, a gym and laundry room.

Holiday Inn Express Gurgaon Sector 50 is situated in a mixed-use complex populated with a shopping mall, restaurants, entertainment, and wellness facilities. The hotel is 30 minutes from Indira Gandhi International Airport and the railway station, and close to the Metro station.

More than ready

The launch also marked the unveiling of a new Holiday Inn Express brand campaign in India, centered around “More Than Ready”, a platform targeted at 25-35 year travellers, who look for added advantages to accomplish their travel goals. The brand campaign was kicked off by a performance by Kanan Gill, Indian stand-up comedy artist.

IHG and SAMHI entered a partnership in 2017 to rebrand 14 hotels (approximately 2000 rooms, operating and under construction) to Holiday Inn Express hotels. Creating a pan-India presence, the hotels will be located across key cities in India such as Bengaluru, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata.

The hotels under the portfolio are being renovated and upgraded with the latest design directives, to ensure the portfolio is fully representative of the Holiday Inn Express brand globally.

InterContinental Hotels Group has announced it has signed up with Thai real estate company Ratanakorn Asset, to develop eight new sites in Thailand, totalling 2000 rooms, slated to open between now and 2027, part of the developer’s strategy to reap success from the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) project.

The properties, comprised of conversions as well as full constructions, will be spread across five prime Thai tourists spots Khao Lak, Koh Samui, Rayong, Phuket and, of course, Pattaya – as part of IHG’s Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Staybridge Suites brands.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced plans for a major expansion of its operations and portfolio in South Korea.

The company currently operates nine hotels in the country across three of its brands – InterContinental, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express – with a further hotel in the pipeline. But it is now planning to drive more development opportunities in Korea with the appointed Steven Choi as its new in-market development representative.

Choi and IHG’s vice president of development for Southeast Asia & Korea, Serena Lim, will now be tasked with expanding IHG’s presence in the country, to take advantage of strong domestic, MICE and inbound travel, plus the opportunities opened up by South Korea’s hosting of next year’s Winter Olympics.

“On a regional level, we have our eyes firmly set on Korea,” said Leanne Harwood, IHG’s vice president of operations for Southeast Asia & Korea. “With a robust domestic market and a steady flow of foreign leisure and business visitors, our brands cater to guests from winter sports fans in the mountain resort town of Alpensia Pyeongchang, to corporate travellers in some of the major cities.

“Korea also represents a substantial outbound market for us, where Korean business and leisure travellers make a sizeable contribution to our network across Southeast Asia,” she added.

IHG will also aim to capitalise on the strength of Korea’s MICE sector. Recent data from the Union of International Associations (UIA), which publishes annual world conference statistics, identified Korea as the top ranking market for international meetings in 2016, achieving a market share of 9.5% globally. Of the 997 international meetings in South Korea last year, more than half (54%) were hosted in Seoul.

“Korea has been stepping up its campaign to attract travellers and meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions and we are well placed to serve this market,” Ms Harwood said.

South Korea’s international profile will be further raised next year when Pyeongchang hosts the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. These events are expected to raise Korea’s international visitor arrivals to 20 million next year.

Much is dependent however, on a rebound in the Chinese inbound market, which has declined sharply since Beijing imposed a ban on package tours to the country earlier this year as part of a diplomatic spat. In the first four months of 2017, the Korea National Tourism Organization (KTO) reported a 26% year-to-date decline in arrivals from China. In April alone, this decline reached 67% year-on-year, and according to STR, this contributed to a 14% decline in revenue per available room (revPAR) at South Korean hotels the following month.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has expanded its collection of Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels in India, with the opening of one property and the signing of three more.

The latest addition to the brand’s operating portfolio is the Holiday Inn Chennai OMR IT Expressway, a 202-room hotel located close to the southern city’s main IT hub and 20 minutes from Chennai International Airport.

And the company has also boosted its Indian pipeline with the signing of deals with existing owners for three more properties: Holiday Inn Express & Suites Gurgaon Sector 90, Holiday Inn Express Kolkata Airport, and another Holiday Inn Express & Suites property in the Delhi area. All three budget hotels are set to open in the next two to three years.

“Signing these properties with existing owners is indicative of IHG’s strength in building strategic partnerships and the growing recognition of the Holiday Inn Express brand in India,” said Sudeep Jain, IHG’s vice president of development for Southwest Asia. “All three properties will draw synergies from IHG hotels located nearby and will reinforce our position in Southwest Asia.

“While IHG already has a strong and growing presence in India, we are looking at developing our portfolio further in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan,” he added.

IHG says it is on track to achieving its target of having 150 hotels either open or in the pipeline in the region within the next 10-15 years. This growth will be driven by the opening of Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express properties across the country, plus Crowne Plaza and InterContinental hotels in key gateway cities.

At present, IHG has 29 hotels operating in Southwest Asia across these four brands, along with 36 hotels in the pipeline.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced the signing of eight new hotels within the Holiday Inn brand family in Germany. 

Most Holiday Inn properties are under franchise agreements

The announcement comes as IHG has recently reported a strong year for the market, and three consecutive record years of signings, including 17 hotels in 2016. One of the key drivers of IHG’s success in the region has been working with Multiple Development Agreement (MDA) partners to develop in locations where there is guest demand.

Martin Bowen, VP, Development, Germany, said: “We have a tailored offer for the German market, and this has paid off. Several of these new hotels are all with long-standing MDA partners who have established relationships with IHG, and understand the returns both Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express deliver.”

Germany, which was one of the top ten regions for inbound travel in 2016, is a competitive market in which IHG has already made a significant impact. 57% of the market is still unbranded, meaning there remain plenty of growth opportunities in the market, particularly within the midscale sector, IHG’s growth engine.

All the new hotels will feature the innovations developed as part of the Holiday Inn brand family transformation. For Holiday Inn, this includes the Open Lobby, in which guests can enjoy dwell-time in the merged restaurant, bar and lounge area. Holiday Inn Express hotels will feature the next-generation room design, which, based on guest insight has revolutionised the design of our public spaces and guest rooms, improved service delivery, and introduced new technology to enhance guest service.

Germany is IHG’s second biggest market in Europe with 69 hotels and 38 in the pipeline.

The hotels signed are:

Holiday Inn Munich – North and Holiday Inn Express Munich – North (Ingolstaedter Strasse) which will be run as a dual branded property. Both hotels are part of Primestar Hospitality multiple development agreement. Holiday Inn Munich – North will feature 156 rooms, a gym, 11 meeting rooms and four smaller meeting spaces, and Holiday Inn Express Munich North (Ingolstaedter Strasse) will feature 236 rooms. The property will have a shared restaurant and will benefit from being just a few kilometres away from the Allianz Arena and BMW Museum.

Holiday Inn Express Berlin – City Kurfuerstendamm is one of two hotels signed with partners Foremost Hospitality GmbH. The hotel, which will feature the next-generation room design in each of its 177 rooms, will be open in the heart of the former West Berlin and only a few minutes away from one of Berlin´s main shopping districts, the Kurfürstendamm.

Also signed with Foremost Hospitality is Holiday Inn Express Leipzig – City Hauptbahnhof (Brandenburgerstr). The 168-room hotel will be located next to Leipzig central station, the most important rail hub in Eastern Germany. It will be 10-15 minutes’ walk away from downtown Leipzig and the city’s university. Automotive manufacturers BMW and Porsche are also based in the area.

Holiday Inn Express Fürth, which has been signed with tristar GmbH, will be situated opposite the city’s Stadthalle auditorium and within walking distance of restaurants, pubs and the main station, but also close to the businesses based in the city. The new build will feature next-generation rooms and a refurbished lobby and ample car-parking space. IHG also signed Holiday Inn Express Saarbrücken, a 163 room conversion of a post-war office building.  The hotel will feature two large meeting areas and ample car-parking space.

As part of a 20 hotel MDA with one of largest hotel groups in Germany, NOVUM Hotel Group, IHG has also signed Holiday Inn Express Erlangen, close to the Erlangen city centre. The 186-room new build property will be will be within walking distance of the main train station and is part of a wider urban development with access to residential and shopping facilities.

In its first partnership with IHG, IFA Immobilien has signed Holiday Inn Express Merzig, a unique 86 room new build hotel, located within a new business park with direct access from the motorway.  Within walking distance to the town centre and the Yachting Club Merzig, the hotel will be the ideal choice for both business and leisure travellers.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has added another five new Holiday Inn and Holiday Express hotels to its portfolio in Germany.

The UK-based hotel group recently announced a record number of new German signings for the first half of 2016, with 24 new properties tied up in the January-June period.

And it has now continued this strong performance with the signing of five more hotels across three German states: Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia.

“The German hotel market is accelerating at pace and we are well positioned to take advantage of the appetite for branded growth,” said Robert Shepherd, IHG’s chief development officer for Europe.

“Fifty-seven per-cent of the market is unbranded, so there is a lot of opportunity for IHG to add value with our international brands. Several of our signings in the last few months have been with long-standing partners of IHG, who have signed multiple development agreements with the company. It’s a great start as we head into this quarter.”

The new hotels signed by IHG in Baden-Wuerttemberg are the Holiday Inn Express Pforzheim, which will be located between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart, Holiday Inn Mannheim City Hauptbahnhof and Holiday Inn Express Mannheim. All three properties are expected to open by 2019.

In Bavaria, the company has bagged the Holiday Inn Express Regensburg, which is expected to open in late 2017, and in North Rhine-Westphalia the Holiday Inn Express Oberhausen is due to launch in early 2018

IHG currently has 64 hotels in Germany, 53 of which are under the Holiday Inn or Holiday Inn Express brands. It also has a further 33 properties in the pipeline, almost all of which are under the Holiday Inn flags.

The Holiday Inn Express Cheltenham has embarked on a renovation in line with the budget brand’s “Next Generation” room concept.

Redefine BDL Hotels, which operates the hotel on behalf of IHG, is investing more than GBP125,000 (US$163,000) in the project. The hotel’s 40 guest bedrooms will be upgraded with new fixtures, fittings and bedding, plus new technology.

The Next Generation concept is aimed at making stays more convenient for travellers, with Smart TVs, USB ports next to the beds, and multi-purpose tables that can be moved around the room.

“The revamp of our 40 guest rooms will offer today’s smart travellers the ultimate stay, providing all of those at-home luxuries they’re accustomed to,” said Daniel Sharpe, GM of the Holiday Inn Express Cheltenham. “It’s an incredibly exciting time for the hotel as the investment and modernisation elevates our venue and its already high standards.”

Holiday Inn Express Cheltenham will be only the fourth hotel operated by Redefine BDL Hotels to undergo the new Next Generation revamp. IHG is planning to roll out the concept to properties across the UK and Europe.

China’s Anbang Insurance Group, which failed in its bid to acquire Starwood Hotels & Resorts earlier this year, has now turned its attentions to IHG.

The UK’s Sunday Times newspaper reported today (7 August 2016) that Anbang is “weighing up an audacious GBP7 billion (US$91.bn) swoop” on InterContinental Hotels Group, which owns the Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn brands among others.

If true, that bid would be almost US$5bn less than the US$14bn Anbang offered for Starwood – a company much smaller than IHG in terms of portfolio size. The Chinese group was however, involved in a bidding war with Marriott at the time.

While the Sunday Times said that Anbang is yet to make a formal approach for IHG, it cited “city insiders” as saying that “exploratory” discussions between the two companies have been underway since June.

IHG is believed to have made enquiries about Starwood last year, prior to Marriott’s initial bid in November 2015 and Anbang’s subsequent interest. In a recent interview, IHG’s CEO Richard Solomons said that his company did not need to make acquisitions “for the sake of being bigger”. The company did complete the US$430 million purchase of US-based hotel and restaurant operator Kimpton in 2014, but this was considered a strategic move to expand in the trendy boutique hotel sector.

London-listed IHG is reported to have rejected a bid from US hospitality giant Wyndham Worldwide in 2014, and the Sunday Times suggests that any offer from Anbang could spark renewed interest from Wyndham.

At the end of the June 2016, IHG operated a total portfolio of 5,070 properties, 3,676 of which were under the Holiday Inn or Holiday Inn Express brands. The company’s total global inventory stood at 749,721 rooms. IHG also has a pipeline of 1,407 hotels comprising 222,233 rooms.

Anbang initially made waves in the hotel industry in 2014 when it acquired New York’s Waldorf Astoria hotel for US$1.95bn.

Holiday Inn Express Christchurch will open in 2018

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has reveals plans for a significant expansion of its portfolio in New Zealand, with two new South Island hotels including the country’s first ever Holiday Inn Express.

Through a new partnership with USAR, the company will open its first Holiday Inn hotel in Queenstown later this year following the conversion of the former Goldridge Resort. And then in 2018, a new-build Holiday Inn Express hotel will debut in Christchurch city centre, marking the brand’s entry into New Zealand.

“There is high demand for hotels in key destinations across New Zealand – including both Queenstown and Christchurch – as the result of a thriving tourism economy,” stated Karin Sheppard, IHG’s chief operating officer for Australasia & Japan. “Tourism is a growing… industry for New Zealand with hotel room nights on a steady increase over the last two years, both from domestic travellers and international travellers.

“We are therefore delighted to announce the signing of these two new hotels as a further extension of our midscale brand expansion in the region,” she added.

The rebrand of the Goldridge Resort to the Holiday Inn Queenstown will officially take place in December 2016, following a major refurbishment of the property’s rooms and public areas. A 50-room extension is also planned for the near future, adding to the hotel’s existing 75 rooms. The hotel, which overlooks an inlet of Lake Wakatipu, will become IHG’s second hotel in Queenstown following the existing Crowne Plaza.

The new Holiday Inn Express Christchurch hotel, set to open late 2018, will be located just 100 metres from the city’s new convention centre. It too will become the second IHG hotel in the city, following a new Crowne Plaza which is currently under construction and due to open mid-2017.

IHG currently operates five hotels in New Zealand under three of its brands: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn. The opening of the Holiday Inn Express Christchurch will therefore mark the launch of its fourth brand in the country.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has opened its first ever Holiday Inn Express hotel in Malaysia.

The launch of the new Holiday Inn Express Kuala Lumpur City Centre marks the latest stage in the budget brand’s Southeast Asian expansion, which has already seen it debut in Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore in recent years.

The new 383-room hotel is located on Jalan Raja Chulan, close to Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle district, which houses many of the city’s main commercial, retail and entertainment venues.

All guests will be offered free Wi-Fi and breakfast, plus power showers and a choice of pillows. Facilities at the hotel include a 24-hour fitness room, self-service business centre, internet stations and a laundry area.

“Holiday Inn Express is one of our fastest growing hotel brands in the world and its growth is fuelled by a rising demand from value-conscious travellers who are seeking affordable accommodation in convenient locations,” said Leanne Harwood, IHG’s vice president of operations for Southeast Asia & Korea.

“Holiday Inn Express Kuala Lumpur City Centre is the first of five Holiday Inn Express hotels that we are opening in Malaysia in the coming years and we will be in a great position to cater to the projected 36 million tourist arrivals expected in Malaysia by 2020,” she added.

The new hotel becomes IHG’s fifth property in Malaysia, joining the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur, Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie, Holiday Inn Melaka and Holiday Inn Penang. The company also has a further four hotels in the pipeline.

There are now 15 Holiday Inn Express hotels in Southeast Asia, including two in Singapore, eight in Indonesia and four in Thailand. And the company is planning a major expansion of the brand in the coming years, with 18 more hotels under development across the region.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has created a new franchise model for its Holiday Inn Express brand in China, through which it hopes to further expand the budget hotel concept.

The new model, which has been called ‘Franchise Plus’, has been “specifically tailored for the Chinese market”, according to IHG, and provides owners with a combination of the benefits of franchise model and additional features from IHG’s management model.

And the first Franchise Plus agreement has already been signed. IHG has teamed up with Shanghai Yaqi Business Hotel for a 260-room Holiday Inn Express hotel in the Hongqiao area of Shanghai.

“IHG has over 30 years’ experience of operating in China and working closely with our hotel owners,” said Kenneth Macpherson, IHG’s CEO for Greater China.

“The launch of Franchise Plus for our Holiday Inn Express brand is an important milestone for our business and for the accommodation landscape in China. With IHG’s world-leading expertise in franchising and our more than three decades of operational excellence and knowledge of the Chinese market, we are confident that the new model will be an engine of growth for IHG and our business partners in the coming years.”

Holiday Inn Express first arrived in Greater China in 2004, and the brand now has 66 hotels operating in more than 30 provinces and cities across the region, with another 67 in the pipeline.

Demand for economy and midscale hotels in mainland China is strong, driven largely by the rise of China’s second, third and fourth tier cities, where quality international accommodation is in short supply.

IHG first entered China in 1984 and now operates 268 hotels across 100 cities, with another 212 in the pipeline. It also recently launched its Hualuxe Hotels brand, which is tailored specifically for the Chinese market.

Now, with 19 Holiday Inn Express properties in its portfolio, these acquisitions further strengthens Redefine|BDL Hotels’ relationship with InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and cements the operator’s position as the largest IHG franchisee operator in Europe.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) will open its first Holiday Inn Express hotel in Australia on Monday 11 April.

The new Holiday Inn Express Sydney Macquarie Park is the first of 15 Holiday Inn Express hotels to be developed in the country, as part of a franchise agreement between IHG and Pro-invest. Additional locations have already been secured in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne.

“A brand synonymous with offering guests a great experience and ‘everything they need but nothing they don’t’, coupled with friendly service, Holiday Inn Express will no-doubt prove popular among smart, discerning Australian travellers” he added.

The 192-room Holiday Inn Express Sydney Macquarie Park offers all of the economy hotel brand’s standard amenities, such as free Wi-Fi and breakfast, a choice of pillows, self-service business centre and laundry room, and a social area called the ‘Great Room’.

Following the opening of the Sydney hotel, a 226-room Holiday Inn Express will open in Spring Hill, Brisbane, later this year. A 245-room property will then launch in the centre of Adelaide in 2017, and in 2018 a 345-rooms Holiday Inn Express will open in the Southbank area of Melbourne.

IHG currently has 25 hotels operating under three brands in Australia – InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn – so Holiday Inn Express Sydney Macquarie Park marks the launch of the company’s fourth brand and 26th hotel in the country.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has opened two new Holiday Inn Express Hotels in India, located in Delhi and Chennai.

Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) has the largest pipeline of new hotels in the Asia Pacific region (not including China), a new report has revealed.

Lodging Econometrics’ latest Asia Pacific Hotel Construction Pipeline report found that IHG currently has 117 new hotels rising in Asia, comprising 26,451 rooms.

This includes 44 Holiday Inn hotels with 10,813 rooms and 41 Holiday Inn Express properties comprising 8,662 rooms. Combined, these two brands represent 73% of all IHG pipeline in Asia.

Following IHG, Marriott has the second largest Asia Pacific pipeline with 108 new hotels comprising 24,872 rooms, while Starwood is third with 88 projects and 18,939 rooms.

Last month, Lodging Econometrics revealed that Hilton Worldwide has the largest pipeline of new hotels in China, with 203 projects comprising 58,697 rooms.

Experienced hotelier Will Glenn moves into the role following two years as general manager at Holiday Inn Express Cheltenham, and will be tasked with overseeing the launch of the St Albans hotel.

The new hotel within the London Colney Fields Shopping Park, which will feature 86 bedrooms and meeting facilities as well as a bar and restaurant for guests, represents a £10million investment.

UK-based independent hotel management company Redefine|BDL Hotels will manage the property when it opens this spring.

Steven Foster, divisional director at Redefine|BDL Hotels, said: “It’s a landmark moment for Redefine|BDL Hotels as we welcome the first of a number of new hotels to the UK-wide portfolio this year.

Having undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment, Holiday Inn Express Portsmouth – North is now open. The new hotel is amongst the first Holiday Inn Express hotels in the UK to unveil the ‘Next Generation’ design, to meet the changing needs of today’s ‘Smart Travellers’.

Upon opening the hotel has 84 guestrooms, which will increase to 150 by spring 2016 as the next stage of the redevelopment and investment in the property continues.  This fresh new design features a completely revamped lounge and lobby area, where guests can relax, dine or work.

Located just off the A27 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, the property is set north of Portsea Island in the district of Farlington.

Free Wi-Fi is available for guests and each room features a wall-mounted flat-screen TV, a flexible work/rest corner where traditional desks have been replaced with a comfortable, ergonomically designed multi-use chair and table that can be moved around the room.

Guestrooms also feature a full-length mirror, a hair dryer and an iron and ironing board, and an en-suite equipped with a power shower.

For dining, there is the new Express Café and Bar where guests can enjoy the included Express Start breakfast buffet with the option to have it ‘on the go’.

“The team are excited to welcome guests to the new hotel.  As we are a short drive away from the city centre and many of Portsmouth’s attractions it’s the ideal spot for guests on the go,” said Lee Price, general manager at Holiday Inn Express Portsmouth – North.

The ambitious project will see a total of £500,000 invested in making improvements to the hotel’s rooms over the next two months.

Refurbishment work at the hotel got underway earlier this month, with every room earmarked for a revamp.

The makeover will be in line with the recently launched Holiday Inn Express Next Generation redesign, developed with industry-leading experts to meet the changing needs of today’s ‘Smart Travellers’.

The project will see the carpets, lighting, curtains, chairs and artwork in the rooms all replaced, while the hotel will take delivery of new beds.

Work at the hotel, managed by the UK’s largest independent hotel management company, Redefine|BDL Hotels, is expected to be completed by 13th March.
Scott Rankin, general manager at Holiday Inn Express, London, Limehouse, said: “This £500,000 investment will allow us to make some fantastic upgrades to our rooms.
“The investment underlines the commitment we have to improving every aspect of our guests’ experience at our hotel.

“We felt that modernising the rooms was a long overdue project and we’re all excited about how much this will enhance what we have to offer.”

Guests staying at the Holiday Inn Express Epsom Downs will enjoy the next generation in hotel experience as the Redefine|BDL Hotels venue completes a £399,000 revamp. 

The hotel has benefited from a makeover in line with the recently launched Holiday Inn Express Next Generation redesign. And guests booking in from now on will be at the front of the queue to enjoy the transformation.

The Next Generation project has been developed with industry experts to meet the changing needs of today’s ‘Smart Travellers’.

The Epsom Downs property, which is managed by Redefine|BDL Hotels, has seen all 120 bedrooms transformed into ‘Next Generation’ spaces, or Gen 4 as it is also known.

Maria Robinson, general manager of Holiday Inn Express Epsom Downs, said: “The transformation of the bedrooms at Holiday Inn Express Epsom Downs offers today’s smart travellers a far more comfortable stay.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) will launch its budget Holiday Inn Express brand at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The company has signed an agreement to take over the running of the existing Eaton Smart New Delhi Airport Transit Hotel, which was the first hotel to open in the transit area of an Indian airport terminal. The 93-room property will now be rebranded as the Holiday Inn Express New Delhi International Airport Terminal 3 by the end of this year.

Shantha de Silva, IHG’s head of Southwest Asia, said the hotel would serve a rising number of passengers, following an expansion plan that aims double the airport’s capacity by 2030.

“We see a real opportunity to draw transit guests into our hotel with our Holiday Inn Express brand offering and look forward to delivering great guest experiences to even more people when the expansion of the new terminal is complete,” said de Silva.

Guests at the Holiday Inn Express will be able to access food and beverage options at both the domestic and international terminals, plus a dedicated hotel dining area, the ‘Great Room’, and spa facilities. All rooms will be equipped with free Wi-Fi, while other services include a self-service business centre and laundry room and a 24-hour fitness centre.

IHG currently operates 25 hotels across four brands in India, but is planning to significantly expand in the country over the next few years with 51 properties in the pipeline. Approximately 18 of these will be Holiday Inn Express hotels.

IHG will open its first ever Holiday Inn Express hotel in Malaysia next year, following the signing of a new agreement for two properties in Kuala Lumpur.

Continuing the budget brand’s rapid recent growth in Southeast Asia, Malaysia’s first Holiday Inn Express hotel will open in 2016. Built on the site of the existing Menara ING office tower, the 383-room Holiday Inn Express Kuala Lumpur City Centre will form part of a mixed-use development including offices, restaurants and cafes.

The other hotel in the agreement will be the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Kuala Lumpur Ampang, which is scheduled to open in 2018. The hotel will feature 300 rooms and suites, catering to both short- and long-term stays.

“One of the main attractions of any Holiday Inn Express hotel is its excellent location at great value, and that is exactly what will make Holiday Inn Express Kuala Lumpur City Centre and Holiday Inn Express & Suites Kuala Lumpur Ampang excellent choices for guests,” said Leanne Harwood, IHG’s vice president of operations for Southeast Asia.

“With the upcoming Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail expected to be completed by 2020, and the development of the Tun Razak Exchange financial district, it is an exciting time for the city.”

All Holiday Inn Express hotels offer free Wi-Fi and breakfast, self-service business centres and laundry rooms, 24-hour fitness centres and facilities for small scale meetings and events.

There are currently 13 Holiday Inn Express hotels open in Southeast Asia across Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, with a further 20 due to open in the next five years, including four in Malaysia.

The Arora Group and InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) have signed an exclusive agreement with Heathrow to develop two hotels directly connected to the airport’s Terminal 4.

The two adjoining hotels, Crowne Plaza London – Heathrow Terminal 4 and Holiday Inn Express London – Heathrow Terminal 4, are due to open in 2018.

The new hotels will operate under a franchise agreement with IHG and will be managed by Arora Hotels, a division of The Arora Group. The joint venture is being granted a ground lease for the 1-hectare site.

Crowne Plaza London – Heathrow T4 will feature 300 bedrooms and a range of business and meeting facilities including five meeting rooms and two boardrooms.

Meanwhile, the 450-room Holiday Inn Express London – Heathrow T4 will be a ‘next generation’ Holiday Inn Express hotel, featuring the latest technology, an Express Café and Bar and larger cosier beds.

The two hotels will be well connected, located within walking distance from Heathrow’s terminals via an air bridge and with direct access to the London Underground, Heathrow Express train service and nearby motorways.

The construction division of The Arora Group, trading as Grove Developments will oversee the project and has already project managed the build of the 453 bedroom, luxury InterContinental® London – The O2, due to open later this year and featuring one of Europe’s largest pillar free ballrooms. This scheme also includes The Arora Tower with 100 private residences and will be connected to the O2 Arena.

Holiday Inn Express Middlesbrough has welcomed its first guests, marking the completion of a landmark regeneration project in the city.

The formerly vacant Albert Road property has been transformed into a 138-bedroom hotel following a £12.4 million development carried out by Ashall Projects, assisted by Middlesbrough Council.

Just over a year after build work on the project began, the hotel welcomed its first guests, including Middlesbrough’s mayor who cut the ribbon to officially open the property.

The UK’s largest independent hotel management company, Redefine|BDL Hotels, which currently manages 69 properties across the UK, will operate the hotel.

The property features a bar, two meeting rooms and single, double and family bedrooms.

Twenty jobs have been created at the hotel, including roles in the front of house, housekeeping, waiting and maintenance teams.

Ross Morrow, chief development officer at Redefine|BDL Hotels, said: “It’s wonderful to see this fantastic regeneration project come to fruition and for the first guests to walk through the doors at Holiday Inn Express Middlesbrough.

“The hotel team is full of enthusiasm for welcoming guests to experience the hotel and delivering an outstanding venue in the heart of Middlesbrough. We are very proud to add the hotel to the Redefine|BDL Hotels portfolio.”

The Cook and Endeavour House building in central Middlesbrough had lain vacant for more than 15 years before the regeneration project to convert it into the Holiday Inn Express began last year.

Holiday Inn Express Krabi Ao Nang Beach will open in 2017

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has signed a management agreement for its first Holiday Inn Express hotel in Krabi.

Scheduled to open in 2017 in the main resort area of Ao Nang, Holiday Inn Express Krabi Ao Nang Beach will be developed on a large site close to the existing Holiday Inn Resort Krabi. It will be just three minutes’ walk from the beach.

“Thailand’s tourism industry is witnessing strong growth and we are seeing beach destinations such as Krabi gaining popularity amongst travellers,” said Leanne Harwood, IHG’s vice president of operations for Southeast Asia.

“As Krabi International Airport becomes more accessible to key global cities and international direct flights to Krabi increase, we anticipate a surge in visitor arrivals over the next few years. It is a great time to be bringing the Holiday Inn Express brand into Krabi.”

Holiday Inn Express Krabi Ao Nang Beach will feature 222 rooms, plus free Wi-Fi and breakfast, a 24-hour fitness centre, business centre, laundry and a large social dining area called the Great Room.

IHG opened Southeast Asia’s first Holiday Inn Express in Bangkok in 2012. There are now four Holiday Inn Express hotels operating in Thailand, and Holiday Inn Express Krabi Ao Nang Beach is one of six new hotels in the pipeline.

IHG has continued the expansion of its Holiday Inn Express brand in Southeast Asia, with the signing of a new property in Bangkok‘s Chinatown district.

The 240-room Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Chinatown will become the budget brand’s fourth property in the Thai capital, following the opening of three hotels in the last three years.

Scheduled to open in 2017, the hotel will form part of a mixed-use development also including shops, restaurants and bars. The new complex will be located on Chareon Krung Road, close to the Chao Praya River and Bangkok’s main railway station, Hualumphong.

“Bangkok retains its position as one of the world’s top travel destinations and tourism is set to grow with over 18 million visitors expected to visit the city this year,” said Leanne Harwood, IHG’s vice president of operations for Southeast Asia.

“We are seeing an increasing number of travellers looking for hotels where they can get a good night’s rest, in a great location and at a reasonable price. Over the years our three Holiday Inn Express hotels in Bangkok have seen strong occupancy and we have received great feedback from our guests on their experiences staying with us.

“We are very excited to be opening another Holiday Inn Express hotel in a new precinct in Bangkok,” she added.

The new hotel will feature the brand’s signature Great Room concept, which combines a dining area with a social space, plus free Wi-Fi, a business centre, laundry room and a 24-hour fitness centre.

IHG currently has 18 properties in Thailand, and 11 more in the pipeline. The company is also expanding its Holiday Inn Express brand across Southeast Asia, including new hotels in Indonesia and Singapore.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has opened the first Holiday Inn Express hotel in South Korea.

Located in the centre of Seoul, close to the main Myeongdong shopping district, the new Holiday Inn Express Seoul Euljiro is a 224-room budget hotel offering a choice of double and twin bed rooms, plus free Wi-Fi and breakfast.

“Holiday Inn Express is our fastest growing brand globally; on average, we open two new Holiday Inn Express hotels every week,” said Karin Sheppard, IHG’s chief operating officer for Australasia, Japan, Korea & franchise hotels. “Our hotels offer guests everything they need and nothing they don’t while being situated in central easily accessible locations.

“The opening of our first Holiday Inn Express hotel in… South Korea is a major milestone in our expansion plans in Asia, and brings our total portfolio in South Korea to nine hotels,” she added.

The opening of Korea’s first Holiday Inn Express continues the budget brand’s recent expansion across Asia Pacific. In the past few years, IHG has signed or opened its first Holiday Inn Express hotels in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has signed a franchise agreement for its first Holiday Inn Express in Adelaide.

Opening in 2018, the 245-room new-build budget hotel will be located on Hindley Street, in the centre of the Australian city. It will offer free Wi-Fi and breakfast, plus a self-service business centre and laundry room, a fitness centre and two meeting rooms.

The hotel is the third to be signed under the master development agreement between IHG and Pro Invest, in a deal that will lead to the development of 15 Holiday Inn Express hotels across Australia by 2025. The first two hotels will open in Sydney and Brisbane in 2016.

“The development of the new Holiday Inn Express Adelaide is the latest in a series of milestones for IHG and our partners Pro Invest,” said Karin Sheppard, IHG’s chief operating officer for Australasia, Japan, Korea & Asia, Middle East & Africa (AMEA) franchising.

“The site is exactly the right location for the Holiday Inn Express guest and hits our strategy of bringing the brand to key Australian cities. We know the domestic market will respond extremely well to this fresh and exciting brand and having a Holiday Inn Express in the CBD will be key as the increase in air connectivity between Adelaide and other key Asian cities continues.

“The hotel will open in 2018 following the launch of the brand in Sydney due to take place early next year,” she added.

IHG currently has 24 hotels operating under three brands in Australia: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn, with a further four hotels in the pipeline.

The series has been round up with Thailand and UAE. InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has launched its first ever Holiday Inn Express in Papua New Guinea.

Set in almost five hectares of grounds, the new budget hotel is positioned in a “secure compound” 8km from the centre of the Papuan capital, Port Moresby. It offers 199 rooms, free breakfast, Wi-Fi, a gym and two squash courts. There is also a free shuttle bus to the city’s Jacksons International Airport, which is 6km from the hotel.

“Holiday Inn Express is our fastest growing brand globally so it’s great to see it launching in new markets across the region,” said Karin Sheppard, IHG’s chief operating officer for Australasia, Japan, Korea & franchise hotels.

“The first Holiday Inn Express hotel in Southeast Asia launched in 2012 and since then, we’ve already grown to a total of 12 hotels across Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. We’re looking forward to the launch of the brand in Australia next year too,” she added.

The new Holiday Inn Express Port Moresby means that IHG now has three of its brands present in Papua New Guinea. Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn hotels are already open in Port Moresby.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has launched a new online resource designed to help hotel developers in Asia, the Middle East & Africa (AMEA).

The new “Build for Success” initiative is an online platform offering a series of tools to help with the development of new Holiday Inn or Holiday Inn Express hotels.

IHG says the platform will help ensure consistent hotel design, reduce costs and risk, increase the speed of development and maximise revenue generating space in the hotels.

The platform is split into three key sections, including a guide to the design principles of the brands, a design “roadmap”, and a range of technical files and reference materials.

“The Build for Success model is our solution to developing even better quality hotels under both brands and will help ensure our hotels open on time without sacrificing quality,” said Khirstie Myles, IHG’s vice president of design & engineering for the AMEA region.

“We’re very excited to be introducing this new online platform and look forward to the great guest experiences it will help to create in our new hotels.”

IHG has 109 Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels open across 27 countries in AMEA, and a further 89 properties due to open in the next three to five years.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has unveiled its ‘next generation’ guest experience for its Holiday Inn Express brand in Europe.

Developed following feedback from guests, the new concept is designed to meet the needs of “Smart Travellers”, IHG said.

It will involve an overhaul of hotel lobbies, dining areas and guest rooms, while the brand’s service delivery is also being completely revamped, and a new food and beverage concept is being tested. The latest smart technology is also being piloted.

Guest rooms will be fitted with Smart TVs that enable guests to stream their own media from a personal device or log in to apps such as Netflix using the hotel’s Wi-Fi which is included in the room price.

The room also features a flexible work/rest corner where the traditional desk has been removed and replaced with a comfortable chair and table that can be moved around the room and has multiple USB ports to charge devices.

A larger bed features a padded noise-reducing headboard inspired by business class airline seats. The bed is dressed with four pillows providing guests with two choices of pillows (two soft and two firm).

IHG Rewards Club members will be able to check in through the IHG App or online prior to arrival. When they arrive at the hotel, guests will be shown their room location and its proximity to the stairs, elevators and emergency exits via tablet screens.   Where possible, the guest is offered a choice of room.

A new Express Café & Bar will dine-in and takeaway breakfast options as well as all-day dining.

IHG has worked with design agencies IDEO and Forpeople to develop the concept.

Commenting on the development, Mike Greenup, vice president, Brand Management, Holiday Inn Brand Family, Europe said: “A hotel room is no longer just a place to sleep and our approach to technology and service starts with understanding our guests and their needs across the entire guest journey. This investment in guest insight and innovation is enabling us to stay ahead of the game.”

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has signed a new hotel that is expected to cater for the rising number of medical tourists to Bangkok.

Opening in 2018, the 200-room Holiday Inn Express & Suites Bangkok Soi Soonvijai will feature a range of rooms and long-stay suites, on the doorstep of Bangkok General Hospital.

“We’ve been seeing encouraging signs of recovery in Bangkok’s tourism industry – once again proving the city’s resilience – and this includes the city’s growing position as a medical tourism destination,” said Leanne Harwood, IHG’s vice president of operations for Southeast Asia.

“There is no better time to be looking at developing a hotel near one of the main hospitals in Bangkok and adding an extended stay option to the new hotel is a strategic decision.

The development will include features such as the brand’s ‘Great Room’ concept, a fitness centre, swimming pool and recreation areas. All guests will be offered free breakfast and Wi-Fi.

Thailand is IHG’s biggest market in Southeast Asia, with 17 properties across five brands: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Hotel Indigo. The company has a further nine hotels in the pipeline in the country.

The Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Sukhumvit 11 is a 161-room budget hotel located on Sukhumvit Soi 11, one of the Thai capital’s most popular entertainment streets.

It offers a choice of queen or twin rooms, all of which come equipped with free Wi-Fi, power showers and a choice of pillows. Breakfast is also free for all guests.

“Travellers… want the guarantee of a fuss-free stay at a reasonable rate. The Holiday Inn Express brand caters to this demand by providing guests with a refreshing and uncomplicated experience in convenient locations around the world. We expect a busy opening period for Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Sukhumvit 11, our third in Thailand’s capital,” said IHG’s Alan Watts, chief operating officer for Asia, Middle East & Africa.

Aberdeen is to have more hotel rooms available in the next three years with three branded hotels under construction in the city.

The framework for two new hotels close to Aberdeen Airport has been completed, marked by a ‘topping out’ event last week.

Holiday Inn Express and Crowne Plaza Aberdeen Airport are due to be opened in June and September 2015 respectively.

The former will have 193 rooms while the latter will have 165, with both including meeting space and restaurants.

Another hotel chain, Marriott International, has also announced a new opening in the city.

Its extended stay brand Residence Inn by Marriott will open on the new Marischal Square development in the city centre by summer 2017.

Work will start on the project next month and will result in 114 studios and 12 one-bedroom suites that each have a kitchen and lounge area. Public areas will include a Lounge Bar, Grab and Go market, fitness centre and business area.

Marriott and Courtyard by Marriott-branded hotels are already in the Dyce area of Aberdeen, part of seven other Marriott hotels in Scotland.

“We are thrilled to be part of the exciting development plans for Marischal Square as we continue to expand our Residence Inn by Marriott brand in Scotland.  The brand prides itself on giving guests everything they need to thrive on longer stays, and we are confident that the modern and stylish design of the hotel combined with the excellent location at the heart of Aberdeen will offer a dynamic hotel experience in the city,” said Tim Walton, vice president international development at Marriott.

Aberdeen City Council leader Councillor Jenny Laing added: “This agreement is a major boost for the city and highlights the strong appeal of both Aberdeen and the new Marischal Square development to top-flight international businesses.”

IHG has continued the rapid roll-out of its Holiday Inn Express brand in Indonesia, with the launch of the budget brand’s first location in Surabaya.

The new Holiday Inn Express Surabaya CenterPlaza is located in the centre of Indonesia’s second largest city, and offers 236 queen or twin rooms.

It becomes the sixth Holiday Inn Express to open in Indonesia since the brand launched in the country in November 2013.

“Since we launched the brand in Indonesia a year ago, we’ve opened an average of one Holiday Inn Express hotel in Indonesia every two months,” said Alan Watts, IHG’s chief operating officer for Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA).

“Savvy and value-conscious travellers can now look forward to the Holiday Inn Express experience in some of Indonesia’s best and most convenient locations across Jakarta, Bali, Semarang and now Surabaya.

“Indonesia is full of opportunities and we look forward to opening 11 more Holiday Inn Express hotels in the country over the next few years,” he added.

Holiday Inn Express Surabaya CenterPlaza will offer as series of convenient, guest-friendly amenities, such as free breakfast and Wi-Fi. There is also a self-service business centre, laundry room and 24-hour fitness room.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has signed a new dual management agreement that will include the introduction of Singapore’s first Hotel Indigo.

The deal, penned with Katong Holdings, will see the development of the 131-room Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong, alongside the 451-room Holiday Inn Express Singapore Katong – the third and largest Holiday Inn Express in the city. Both hotels will be located in the Joo Chiat neighbourhood of Katong, in the eastern part of Singapore.

“Our recent years in Singapore have been nothing short of exciting. We are seeing growth at a remarkable pace with the launch of yet another of our brands in the market, having just brought Holiday Inn Express into Singapore last year,” said Clarence Tan, IHG’s senior vice president of development for Asia, Middle East & Africa.

“The opening of these two hotels in partnership with Katong Holdings Private Limited will be significant milestones for our presence in Singapore. There is a great story to tell with the rich heritage of the Joo Chiat area, which makes it the perfect location for our first Hotel Indigo. We will design the hotel to bring out the neighbourhood story in true Hotel Indigo fashion.

“Opening our third Holiday Inn Express alongside it means we are able to help our value-conscious guests experience the authentic ethnic cultures of Singapore from a whole new part of the city,” Tan added.

The new Hotel Indigo will feature two F&B outlets, including an all-day dining restaurant, plus one meeting room, a swimming pool and fitness centre. The Holiday Inn Express Singapore Katong meanwhile, will feature one meeting room and a breakfast area called ‘The Great Room’.

Both hotels, expected to open in 2016, joining IHG’s existing collection of six hotels in Singapore: InterContinental Singapore, Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard City Centre, Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium, Holiday Inn Express Singapore Orchard Road and Holiday Inn Express Singapore Clarke Quay.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has signed a deal to launch its first Holiday Inn Express hotel in Brisbane.

The 226-room budget hotel will be located in Brisbane’s Spring Hill district, and will offer two meeting rooms, a breakfast area, business centre, fitness centre and free Wi-Fi.

“The development of the new Holiday Inn Express in Brisbane is a significant milestone for IHG as it marks our return to the city with the entry of our largest and one of our fastest growing brands into the market,” said Matthew Tripolone, IHG’s head of development for Australasia.

“As the third most populous city in Australia, Brisbane has immense growth potential as it sees steady increase in the number of domestic and international travellers. This hotel will cater to the growing demand for hotel accommodation in the Spring Hill district.”

Holiday Inn Express Brisbane Spring Hill becomes the brand’s third signed hotel in Australia. The first is due to open in Sydney next year.

IHG currently operates 27 hotels in Australia under three of its brands – InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn.

IHG has opened a new Holiday Inn Express hotel in Bali.

The Holiday Inn Express Bali Raya Kuta becomes the brand’s fourth property in Indonesia, and comes only eight months after Holiday Inn Express made its debut in the country.

Located in the popular Kuta area of the island, 6km from the airport, the new Holiday Inn Express Bali Raya Kuta is a 168-room budget hotel offering free Wi-Fi and breakfast. Facilities include a swimming pool and 24-hour fitness.

“We’re opening the doors of our fourth Holiday Inn Express hotel just eight months after we first introduced the brand to Indonesia,” said Clarence Tan, IHG’s chief operating officer for Southeast Asia & resorts.

“We now have a total of nine Holiday Inn Express hotels across the Southeast Asia and 16 more due to open in the region over the next five years. We’ve been delighted to see guests from across the region embrace the brand with such enthusiasm.”

Holiday Inn Express first launched in Indonesia in 2013 with opening of the Holiday Inn Express Semarang Simpang Lima. This has since been joined by the Holiday Inn Express Jakarta Thamrin and Holiday Inn Express Bali Kuta Square. The country will now see the opening of 11 more Holiday Inn Express hotels over the next five years.

The new hotel also becomes the fourth IHG hotel in Bali and will be joined by Holiday Inn Resort Bali Benoa in the fourth quarter of this year.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has opened the Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Sathorn – the brand’s third property in Thailand and the second in Bangkok.

Located in the Sathorn business district, Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Sathorn is a 184-room budget hotel offering free Wi-Fi, breakfast and a fitness centre. Owned by Thailand’s TCC Hotels Group, the new hotel is located close to Chong Nonsi BTS skytrain station.

“Opening our second Holiday Inn Express property in the centre of Thailand’s capital offers both business and leisure guests an amazing opportunity to stay in an ideal location,” said Clarence Tan, IHG’s chief operating officer for Southeast Asia & resorts.

“Last year Thailand achieved record numbers of tourist arrivals, with over 26 million visitors from around the world, making the country an important part of our growth strategy in Southeast Asia.”

The new hotel joins Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Siam as the brand’s second hotel in the Thai capital. And this portfolio will increase later this year with the opening of the Holiday Inn Express Sukhumvit 11.

IHG now operates 16 hotels across Thailand.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has unveiled a new prototype design for its Holiday Inn Express brand.

Initially developed for properties in the US and Canada, the new design includes a range of features intended to maximise space and enhance efficiency. In terms of room design, this will include the introduction of new flexible work space, extra luggage storage units, moveable seating and new décor with neutral colour schemes.

In terms of public areas, all hotels will feature a ‘Great Room’ – a multi-purpose area in the lobby of the hotel, which also includes a breakfast bar, dining area and additional seating. To maximise space, reception desks will be replaced by individual check-in pods. Hotels will also revamp their meeting space to make it more “businesslike and uncluttered”, and properties will offer a business centre and 24/7 market.

“We worked very closely with a number of our key owners to develop the updated prototype design for Holiday Inn Express to ensure that it is efficient to build and operate and will deliver strong financial returns,” said Joel Eisemann, IHG’s chief development office. “Engaging with both our owners and our guests is a key part of our strategy as we evolve our brands.”

Many of the changes are also designed to improve the operational efficiency of the hotels, including use of more durable materials that require less maintenance and LED lighting to reduce energy costs. For the first time, IHG will also provide hotel owners with a full set of architectural and interior design documents, to help with the redesign process.

“The Holiday Inn Express brand target guest travels for both business and leisure, values efficiency and simplicity, and wants a great ‘base camp’ when they travel,” said Jennifer Gribble, head of Americas for Holiday Inn Express. “The updated prototype includes purposeful design features to deliver on those needs.”

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has opened its first Holiday Inn Express in Jakarta.

The new-build Holiday Inn Express Jakarta Thamrin is located in the centre of the Indonesian capital and features 101 rooms, free Wi-Fi, a self-service laundry and ‘grab and go’ breakfast.

The new property becomes the second Holiday Inn Express in Indonesia, but IHG plans to expand the budget brand to a further three locations in the country in the coming months, with the opening of the Holiday Inn Express Bali Kuta Square, Holiday Inn Express Bali Raya Kuta and Holiday Inn Express Jakarta Pluit Citygate.

These form part of an overall pipeline of 12 Holiday Inn Express hotels in Indonesia, and 19 across Southeast Asia.

“Indonesia will continue to be an important growth market for us over the next few years. Jakarta sees more than two million visitors each year and is known as one of the region’s top shopping destinations. With the new hotel situated on the city’s busiest road, this makes it the smart choice for travellers wanting to stay close to major business hubs and tourist attractions,” said Clarence Tan, IHG’s chief operating officer for Southeast Asia and resorts.

There are now 2,235 Holiday Inn Express hotels across the world, comprising 210,793 rooms.

InterContinental Hotel Group has signed three Holiday Inn properties in the UK, it has announced.

The hotels, which will all be operated under franchise agreements, will be opened in Darlington, Edinburgh and London.

The Holiday Inn Express Edinburgh Airport will be opened with Chardon Trading in spring 2014, Holiday Inn Darlington will be ran in agreement with Dominvs Living and the London property, in Ealing, will be opened with Chart Forte Court. The London property will open in 2015 and the Darlington hotel will open in mid-2014.

IHG’s chief development officer Robert Shepherd said: “These investments in the Holiday Inn brand family reflect its success not only in Europe, but also globally as the brands continue to appeal to both investors and consumers in an increasingly competitive hotel market.”

The promotion will appear on screens from today as well as on radio and digital means in the UK and Germany.

Using the strapline ‘Simple. Smart. Spot On.’, the campaign targets travellers who are regularly on the move and want a no-fuss stay at an affordable rate.

Spot On.” ad will show our guests that Holiday Inn Express is continually evolving to meet their needs. InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) has formed a new partnership that will lead to the roll-out of at least 15 new Holiday Inn Express hotels across Australia.

The hotel company has signed a deal with Pro Invest Group, which has established a US$150 million fund to develop a portfolio of budget hotels in the country.

The initial collection of 15 Holiday Inn Express hotels, totalling approximately 2,100 rooms, will rise in city, suburban and airport locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane. IHG will enter into franchise agreements for each of the hotels.

The first hotel will open at Macquarie Park in North Ryde, Sydney, in autumn 2014, offering 190 rooms and services such as free Wi-Fi.

“This fund is comprised of a group of offshore investors, all who see the potential of investing in both the Holiday Inn Express brand, and Australia,” revealed Ronald Barrott, principal of Pro Invest. “We believe now is the time to grow this brand in the market and travellers will certainly benefit from having one of the world’s biggest hotel brands to choose from.”

IHG’s CEO for Asia, the Middle East & Africa, Jan Smits, said the deal represented a “strong sign of confidence” in IHG.

“Our current hotel brands here, InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn, are already well-known and regarded by our hotel owners, and Holiday Inn Express is a welcome addition. We announced our first signing under this brand earlier this year and that hotel will open in Perth, Western Australia in 2015. Pro Invest’s portfolio will launch with the opening of Holiday Inn Express North Ryde in autumn 2014,” Smits said.

The arrival of Holiday Inn Express in Australia comes at a time of major expansion for the brand in the Asia Pacific region. Having recently launched in Thailand and Singapore, IHG also plans to introduce Holiday Inn Express Malaysia and Indonesia in the coming months.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has launched its Holiday Inn Express brand in Singapore.

In the inaugural property opened its doors today (17 July 2013) on the city’s main shopping artery, Orchard Road, marking the continued expansion of the brand in Southeast Asia.

Holiday Inn Express Singapore Orchard Road will feature 221 rooms, all with complimentary Wi-Fi, iPod docks, mini fridges, tea- and coffee-making facilities and 40-inch flat-screen TVs. Hotel facilities will include a business centre with computer stations, vending machines and a meeting facility for up to 12 people.

“Globally, Holiday Inn Express is one of the largest and fastest growing brands in the industry and, in Southeast Asia, the brand has a particularly bright future ahead. We are confident that Holiday Inn Express will do well in Singapore, whether guests are here for a quick stopover or longer trip, for business or for leisure.” said Clarence Tan, IHG’s chief operating officer for Southeast Asia.

Holiday Inn Express Singapore Orchard Road becomes the third Holiday Inn Express hotel in Southeast Asia, joining recently-opened properties in Bangkok and Phuket. But IHG has major expansion plans for the brand in this region.

Next up in Singapore will be the Holiday Inn Express Singapore Clarke Quay, which is expected to open the first quarter of 2014 and forms part of a pipeline of 17 new Holiday Inn Express hotels in the region – 12 in Indonesia, two in Thailand, two in Malaysia and one in Singapore.

It will compete in the market with Accor’s recently restructured ibis brand, which is also expanding rapidly across the region, plus local brands such as favehotel and Tune Hotels.

Holiday Inn Express has launched an online travel competition which challenges and rewards players based on their travel trivia knowledge.

Called the Holiday Inn Express Travel Smart Quiz, players are pitted head to head with competitors from specific countries across Asia, Middle East and Africa in a bid to be crowned the Ultimate Travel Smart Champion.

Open to residents above the age of 18 in Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, India, United Arab Emirates and South Africa, players have the chance to win free nights at Holiday Inn Express properties. Up to 140 nights are up for grabs.

The 12-week competition runs from 19 June to 11 September 2013 and participants must visit www.travelsmartquiz.com to register and play. Once registered, players choose to compete as one of four travel personalities: an Adventurer, Planner, Socialiser or Free Spirit. They then compete in the trivia quiz, by answering as many multiple choice travel trivia questions as possible in one minute.

Participants can re-take the quiz every 24 hours to accumulate points and increase their chances of winning. Players can also challenge Facebook friends to beat their score and view a personalised leaderboard, made up of just friends in their Facebook network.

Weekly prizes will be awarded and, at the end of the 12-week competition, the players with the most points from each travel personality categories will be crowned a Travel Smart Champion. They will receive 200,000 Priority Club Rewards’ points, which is equivalent to approximately 10 night stay at a Holiday Inn Express property. The overall highest scorer of these four category winners also will be named the Ultimate Travel Smart Champion and receive an additional 100,000 Priority Club Rewards’ points, taking their winning prize to the equivalent of approximately a 15 night stay in a Holiday Inn Express hotel.

Prizes are given in the form of Priority Club Rewards’ points. Winners also are able to use their points to redeem hotel nights at any other InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) property around the world, travel packages, experiences or merchandise, from music and magazines to household goods. Priority Club Rewards is the world’s largest hotel loyalty programme.

Set to open in 2015, the new-build 20-storey property will be located in the centre of the Western Australia city, overlooking the Swan River. Development of the AU$35 million (US$37m) budget hotel is expected to commence later this year.

“There is real investment potential in Perth hotels at the moment, with the mining capital of Australia experiencing soaring room rates and a shortage of guest rooms. The CBD hasn’t seen a new hotel build for more than a decade, so we’re delighted to be working towards a solution for both business and leisure travellers to the city,” said Ralph Nunis, head of the property’s developer, Sunfire Asset. “The Holiday Inn Express business model also means we will be able to keep operational costs down and room rates at affordable levels.”

As a Holiday Inn Express hotel, the Perth property will offer modern rooms with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs, along with a limited range of facilities such as a laundry and small meeting rooms.

“We’ve seen Holiday Inn Express grow exponentially in international markets over the last two decades, pointing to strong demand for such a brand from both guests and investors. We’ve been looking for the right location and the right partner to launch the brand with here in Australia. Holiday Inn Express will become the fourth IHG brand operating in Australia, following InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn. The Australia launch follows the brand’s recent expansion in Southeast Asia, with a series of new properties planned for Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has officially debuted India’s first Holiday Inn Express in Ahmedabad yesterday.

The hotel, and a further 18 properties under the same brand are being developed through a joint venture partnership between Duet Hotels India (DIH) with 76% stake and IHG with 24% equity stake.

Located in close proximity to the airport, Holiday Inn Express Ahmedabad offers 173-rooms. The hotel will focus on providing guests with quality, well designed rooms, a core range of facilities, free Wi-fi and breakfast.

“We identified a gap for quality mid-market hotels across the country and fulfilling the growing demands of these guests is our business focus. The mid-market hotel space in India offers a compelling investment proposition, with favourable demand-supply dynamics and an attractive build cost to operating returns equation,” said Naveen Jain, President of Duet India Hotels.

“Our strategic partnership with IHG gives us with the platform to tap into the full potential of this opportunity. At Duet, we concentrate on the property asset using our expertise to find the right site and building the product. IHG then manages the operation of the hotels on our behalf. The strengths of our two organizations combined will ensure these hotels succeed,” added Jain.

The demand is there for branded hotels that people know and trust – midscale hotels in India currently represent just 15% of all hotel rooms and this means there is incredible headroom for growth. If you look at domestic trips, Ahmedabad is one of the cities benefiting from a strong, local travel base and a clear gap exists in the mid-market segment,” said Douglas Martell, Vice President for Operations in South West Asia at IHG.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has revealed a major expansion plan for Indonesia, including the growth for its Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express brands and the nationwide launch of Hotel Indigo.

Announced at the InterContinental Jakarta today by Alan Watts, IHG’s Vice President of Operations for Southeast Asia, the expansion will see five of the company’s brands operating in the country in the next few years, with Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Hotel Indigo accompanied by InterContinental and Crowne Plaza.

“Indonesia is a key growth market for us and we are excited about the opportunities here,” said Watts. “With the scale we have built and the operational excellence we have achieved globally, we are confident that we will be able to bring world class delivery to our hotel owners and a high quality experience to our guests in Indonesia.”

Holiday Inn’s nationwide roll-out will begin in 2013 with the opening of the Holiday Inn Jakarta Kemayoran, followed by openings in Bali and Solo in 2014 and 2016 respectively.

Holiday Inn Express has a pipeline of nine hotels scheduled to open in Indonesia over the next two years. These include two openings in Jakarta, one in Bali and one in Semarang in 2013, plus debuts in Surabaya, Solo, Bogor and Yogyakarta, and a third Jakarta property in 2014.

Boutique brand Hotel Indigo will debut in Indonesia in 2016, with the opening of the Hotel Indigo Jakarta Kemang, while the luxury InterContinental brand will also expand with a new resort in Bali due to open in 2015.

The recent launch of the US$40m Holiday Inn Express Bahrain, the Kingdom’s first limited service hotel, is indicative of growing opportunities in Bahrain for travel and tourism sector over the coming decade. The investment has been made by Dubai International Capital, through its majority owned vehicle Ishraq Gulf Real Estate Holding Company.

Ishraq is an experienced developer and operator of Holiday Inn Express hotels across the GCC, focusing on value-conscious business and leisure travellers. The 274 room hotel is close to Bahrain International Airport and sports all the latest facilities.

Maissan Jalal Al Maskati, chairman of Ishraq Gulf Real Estate Holding and managing director of Dubai International Capital, said: “Bahrain has been and continues to be an attractive tourism and hospitality market. We continue to evaluate new investment opportunities in Bahrain.”

A recent research report published by the World Travel and Tourism Council forecasts that the direct contribution to GDP of travel and tourism is set to grow by 3.7% per annum between 2012 -2022 to US$2.04 billion.

Coupled to this is the expected growth in employment within the sector, from approximately 27,500 jobs in 2011 to 36,000 jobs in 2022. In 2022, travel and tourism investment is expected to top US$865 million compared to US$545 million in 2011.

Such investment will play a key role in attracting the forecasted annual visitor figures to over 8m arrivals in 2022 in 2011 foreign tourist arrivals neared 5m. Business travel spending in Bahrain is also forecast to rise to BD169.3m ($449m) in 2022.

Commenting on the future of the Bahrain tourism and investment in tourism, Kamal bin Ahmed, Minister of Transportation and Acting Chief Executive of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB), said: “This represents a significant investment and is an indication of the faith in the strong fundamentals and growth prospects of the Kingdom.”

Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) will open a new Crowne Plaza property in Hong Kong later this year.

The Crowne Plaza Hong Kong Kowloon East is expected to open its doors on 28 September, connected to the Tseung Kwan O MTR station and PopCorn shopping mall. The 47-storey property will be the first five-star hotel in the Tseung Kwan O area of Hong Kong, and will feature a 1,030m² grand ballroom, an outdoor wedding garden, spa, outdoor pool, fitness centre and three restaurants, including an al fresco rooftop outlet.

The hotel will be joined on 26 October by the new Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong Kowloon East.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has commenced a major expansion of its Holiday Inn Express brand in Southeast Asia, with the opening of the region’s first property in Bangkok.

The launch of the new Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Siam today (19 June 2012) is expected to be followed by the roll out of 12 more properties by 2014, across Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.

“We’ve seen Holiday Inn Express grow exponentially over the last two decades into a well established brand in international markets. This points to strong demand for the brand from both our guests and investors,” said Jan Smits, CEO of IHG Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA).

“We’re confident that Holiday Inn Express will do very well in a region with popular leisure and business destinations and we’re thrilled to open our first Southeast Asian property right here in Bangkok.”

Located in the centre of the Thai capital, close to the MBK shopping centre and National Stadium skytrain station, the 300-room Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Siam will offer the brand’s core amenities such as free Wi-Fi and breakfast, as well as a business centre and restaurant.

“We’re very excited to work with IHG on the first Holiday Inn Express in Southeast Asia. The brand has a very innovative business model in this category and we’re confident that the hotel will be profitable,” said Sunny Bajaj, Managing Director of Amburaya Hotels and Resorts – developer of the new Bangkok property.

Holiday Inn Express has a global portfolio of 2,133 properties, including 40 in the Asia Pacific region. With a further 54 Asian hotels in the pipeline, including 12 in Southeast Asia, it is also IHG’s fastest-growing brand.
