Hong Kong’s incredibly diverse terrain makes it a true paradise for lovers of outdoor adventures. From international-standard races like Cyclothon, which attract cyclists from around the world, to heart-pumping activities that allow adventurers to go at their own pace, there are plenty of ways to rediscover Hong Kong from a new perspective.

Push your limits at a world-class international racing event

As a global city, Hong Kong hosts a number of international sporting events each year. Many are open for overseas enrollment, allowing visitors to challenge themselves while taking in spectacular front-row views of Victoria Harbour and beyond.

Getting a pole position at the Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon

Got a need for speed? The Cyclothon, Hong Kong’s largest international cycling event, returns on 22 October, with participants speeding through streets and roads with roaring crowds alongside 5,000 other cyclists from around the world. Spectators will have the chance to witness the skills of nearly 100 professional cyclists, including more than 10 UCI WorldTour teams and pro continental teams, such as Jayco-AlUla from Australia and Corratec – Selle Italia from Italy, competing for the champion’s jersey and prize money as they stage a series of intense battles with the UCI 1.1 Road Race returning to the city after five years.

The world-class race offers grandstand views of Hong Kong’s city skyline and stunning natural landscape over its three-tunnel, three-bridge 30- and 50-kilometre routes, which include roads and thoroughfares opened exclusively for the cyclists. Registration for this unforgettable ride opens on 6 September.

Lace up your running shoes for the HONG KONG STREETATHON and the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon

Hong Kong’s moderate winter climate is ideal for outdoor running, and this season, the city will host two incredible events for runners of all abilities seeking a different perspective on some of the city’s best-known attractions and hidden wonders.

On 17 December, over 20,000 runners are expected to race in the HONG KONG STREETATHON. Runners can challenge themselves by taking one of the three distinct routes, including a marathon, which traverses the Kwun Tong Bypass and features panoramic harbour views, a cross-harbour half-marathon, and a 10-kilometre run taking in several thoroughfares that will be open to runners for the very first time.

Alternatively, enthusiastic runners can hit the streets in Hong Kong on 21 January 2024 for one of the region’s most significant running events: the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon. This popular event will once again encompass a marathon, half-marathon and 10-kilometre run. Head to the event website to register.

Explore a different side of Hong Kong with a thrilling outdoor adventure

Other than the exhilarating racing events that can be enjoyed, for adventure-seeking visitors looking for a way to stay active while exploring a different side of the city, Hong Kong also has you covered, thanks to its temperate winter climate and diverse natural landscape, with many outdoor adventures just a stone’s throw from the city.

Heritage, scenery and cycling: the Tuen Mun to Sha Tin bike path

Feeling inspired by the Cyclothon? Whether through bustling urban centres or on idyllic outlying islands, there are a number of alternative ways to explore Hong Kong on two wheels for cyclists of all skill levels. One unmissable journey can be found in the New Territories in the form of a 55-kilometre-long track that connects Tuen Mun to Sha Tin. En route, riders can explore some of the city’s rich cultural history with the path boasting easy access to centuries-old temples, and other historic structures and monuments, all backdropped by a breathtaking terrain that features wetlands, rivers, parks, mountains and the sea.

Take a dive in Sai Kung, a paradise for water sports lovers

As a city with a vast coastline, Hong Kong is an excellent place for water sports lovers. The verdant rolling hills and rugged coastline of the Sai Kung Peninsula have long made it a go-to destination for weekend hikers, but this expansive country park is just as spectacular when explored from the water. Head to Sai Kung Country Park’s Three Fathoms Cove (Kei Ling Ha Hoi) and step onto a stand-up paddleboard to take in charming seafront villages framed by incredible geological formations, and marvel at breathtaking views as fish swim beneath your feet.

Scale new heights: Rock climbing on Tung Lung Chau

Guarding the east entrance to Victoria Harbour is the small but mighty subtropical island of Tung Lung Chau, one of Hong Kong’s true hidden gems. With its unique coastal scenery and sea cliffs dotting the shoreline, the islet is popular for thrill-seeking rock climbers of all experience levels. Tung Lung Chau is also home to a number of historical sites, perfect for exploring after a morning climb.

Dr Pang Yiu-kai, Chairman of Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), expressed warm welcomes towards the Government’s announcement of removing the amber code for inbound visitors. He said: “The new arrangement marks the opening of the tourism doors of Hong Kong. Upon fulfilling the vaccination and COVID-19 test requirements, visitors can now enjoy Hong Kong’s full range of diverse and exciting experiences, including our culinary offerings. We expect that the new measures will stimulate travellers interests in visiting Hong Kong.”
Recently, HKTB hosted a mega familiarisation trip for about 60 Southeast Asia (SEA) travel trade representatives from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore to allow them to experience in person Hong Kong’s new tourism appeals and winter festivity. As the Government lifted the amber code, the SEA delegate is the first inbound visitor group to fully enjoy Hong Kong’s dearly-missed cuisines and diverse experiences.

Dane Cheng, HKTB Executive Director said, “It is glad to see the lifting of amber code arrangement for inbound visitors. It marks the opening of tourism doors of Hong Kong. Seizing this opportunity, HKTB presents Hong Kong’s brand new experiences to our overseas travel trade partners, whom we haven’t seen in a while, hoping that they will introduce brand new tourism products and share Hong Kong’s tourism appeal to visitors in their respective markets and bring them back to Hong Kong as soon as possible. The familiarisation trip marks the milestone first step to our continuous efforts in inviting travel trade partners and media organisations in other visitor source markets to Hong Kong. We will also roll out a global promotional campaign with a view to teaming up with various sectors across the city to drive the full revival of Hong Kong’s tourism together.”

HKTB’s three strategies for bringing back visitors

  1. Rolling out global promotional campaign “Hello Hong Kong”

HKTB will launch a global promotional campaign “Hello Hong Kong” to showcase Hong Kong’s iconic tourism appeals and new experiences, sending out the message that different sectors in the city stand together to warmly welcome visitors to Hong Kong.

HKTB will invite hundreds of industry representatives, travel trade media, KOLs and Hong Kong Super Fans from around the world to visit the city in person and experience the city for themselves. For example, a group of directors from Southeast Asia will be invited to Hong Kong to make microfilms to showcase Hong Kong’s charms.

HKTB will join hands with the travel trade to participate in overseas trade shows to tell the good Hong Kong stories through tourism.

  1. Showering visitors with hospitality treats and wide range of offers

A series of hospitality treats, such as special welcome drinks will be provided to visitors arriving in Hong Kong in the first month of the campaign. About 100 restaurant and bar partners are expected to participate. Other hospitality treats will also be available.

HKTB will partner with various sectors including airlines, tour operators, hotels to offer various treats to continuously drum up visitors’ intention to come to Hong Kong. Support the Airport Authority and airlines, especially in overseas promotions, in free air tickets giveaway.

  1. Staging and supporting an exciting line-up of mega events

HKTB will continue to organise an exciting line-up of mega events, including events that are specially designed for visitors, to showcase Hong Kong’s return to the international stage, generate positive word-of-mouth for Hong Kong and strengthen the city’s visibility around the world. More than 200 events and happenings are confirmed to be staged in Hong Kong in 2023.Over 100 large-scale MICE events will also be staged in town in 2023.

HKTB brought back mega trade familiarisation trip for SEA trade partners
SEA has long been Hong Kong’s important visitor source market with great potential. Recent visitor arrival figures reveal that SEA are the first group of travellers to return to Hong Kong.

The 5-day-4-night familiarisation trip took the trade delegate to check out newest attractions including M+ and Hong Kong Palace Museum in West Kowloon Cultural District; voyage through religious site in “Hong Kong Neighbourhood – West Kowloon” to experience Hong Kong’s authentic local culture; experience new rides and performances in theme parks. The delegate also left their footprints at the the Christmas town of HKTB’s “Hong Kong WinterFest” and made a wish at the tallest outdoor Christmas tree in town.

HKTB also made every effort to assist the SEA trade delegate in liaising with the local travel trade, arranging meetings with both sides to explore future cooperation and open up business opportunities.

Experts claim that Hong Kong’s ongoing pandemic restrictions have not effectively stopped the spread of COVID-19, and the city is now fighting to restore its tourism industry.

Despite the city’s reputation as a welcoming site for international visitors, Hong Kong has remained mainly off-limits to tourists from outside the country for the better part of three years.

While the city of Hong Kong has managed to stay alive, it has yet to flourish exactly. As the COVID pandemic restrictions persisted year after year, they were forced to be flexible and constantly adjust their focus.

While Hong Kong has managed to stay alive, it has not flourished. As the COVID pandemic restrictions continued year after year, they were forced to be flexible and to adjust their focus constantly.

As a result, even though the hotel quarantine has been lifted, international visitors are still staying away. As a result, reviving the tourism industry would be fantastic.

By early 2020, Hong Kong has already advocated for curfews, vaccination permits, and bans on group meetings.

The city adopted Beijing’s “zero-COVID” strategy for the disease but has since abandoned it for its seven million residents.

The mandatory three-day quarantine requirement for all international arrivals in Hong Kong was removed in September and replaced with the current “0+3” programme.

Tourists are not allowed in any public places during this period. After this, visitors to Hong Kong are allowed to roam the city; however, they are required to wear protective masks at all times.

The number of COVID cases in Hong Kong recently reached 9,218, the highest daily total over two months.

The highly contagious omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 have been held accountable for the rise of COVID-19-causing coronavirus infections, but specialists claim the trend is already reversing.

In an announcement made earlier this month, the Hong Kong government stated that tour groups would be allowed to visit important attractions over the three days of self-health monitoring.

However, a news source claims that travel agencies in Hong Kong are saying that the city’s ongoing pandemic restrictions are still putting off overseas tourists.

In the cases of Thailand and Japan, for instance, tourism returns only when the countries themselves show signs of confidence in reopening.

There were just 249,699 tourists to Hong Kong in September, which is down significantly from the 1.1 million who arrived in January, before the pandemic.

More than 65 million visitors flocked to the city in 2018.

Ten million fewer tourists arrived in the country in 2019 due to massive protests against the administration and subsequent clashes with police.

78% of Hong Kong’s visitors came from mainland China in 2018, reopening the border with China is essential for the city’s economy.

The [Hong Kong Tourism Board] will focus on South Korea and Southeast Asian countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines, in 2023, as well as Japan and Taiwan, two of its top 10 tourist markets that only recently reopened.

At the same time, in October, the Hong Kong Tourism Board announced that, once the ban was removed, it would give away half a million complimentary airline tickets.

The tourism industry in Hong Kong has been struggling, and several experts have questioned if this is the answer.

The highly anticipated “Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon” is making a return after four years! The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced that the “Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon” will be held on 18 December 2022 (Sunday).

Thousands of cyclists will buzz through the streets of Hong Kong as the cosmopolitan city is transformed into a racetrack, with professional athletes and cycling enthusiasts participating in the 50km and 30km ride, as well as four other races: the CEO Charity and Celebrity ride, Men’s Open, Women’s Open and Team Time Trial.

With a tentative quota of 3,000 participants, the most popular event, the 50km ride will begin and finish on Tsim Sha Tsui’s Salisbury Road, featuring three bridges and three tunnels across the city, including the spectacular Tsing Ma Bridge. The route will take the cyclists through Mongkok, the heart of the city, to the outlying island of Tsing Yi, providing an exclusive opportunity for the participants to enjoy the city’s signature cityscape, surreal nature and accessible infrastructure.

Hong Kong kicked off a strong line-up of popular international sports and entertainment events earlier this month. Breaking the record of the world’s largest live snooker crowd in history, the “Hong Kong Masters 2022” final attracted over 8,500 fans to watch the exhilarating match. In the “New World Harbour Race” last weekend, over 1200 swimmers made a splash in one of the world’s busiest harbours with the backdrop of Hong Kong’s spectacular cityscape. And the “2022 Hong Kong Sevens” is returning to Hong Kong Stadium from 4 to 6 November.

In the flagship sports event of the city, 16 international men’s teams, including Hong Kong, will compete in this year’s tournament at Hong Kong Stadium with the popular national teams of Fiji, New Zealand, South Africa, Team Great Britain and Samoa. The three-day tournament is more than a sporting showpiece, it is an energy-filled social carnival and a city-wide party.

The long-awaited extravaganza will be filled with live music and entertainment, so that fans can enjoy the electrifying ambience with a jug of beer and a handful of fries. Tickets are already on sale for the soon-approaching landmark event, as Hong Kong prepares to welcome the city’s most thrilling weekend of the year.

Long-distance lovebirds around the world found the pandemic emotionally difficult as travel restrictions across the world made it impossible for them to see their loved ones. However, Shan and Teh, a couple who have been apart since the beginning of the pandemic, have found solace from each other’s embrace and renewed their sweet memories in Hong Kong.

Living in Guangzhou, Mainland China and Malaysia respectively, Shan and Teh stayed strong with their relationship despite travel restrictions. After over two years of separation, the couple decided to meet in Hong Kong in early October for some authentic local delicacy and creating new memories with the city’s great outdoors. They were even more rejoiced when they learned that they no longer had to undergo mandatory quarantine in hotels days before they visited Hong Kong. As they arrived in Hong Kong, the lovebirds turned to the online visitor services provided by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) for local suggestions for their long-awaited reunion.

As passionate foodies and active outdoor enthusiasts, Shan and Teh appreciated the helpful suggestions from HKTB’s “Hong Kong Travel Buddy” on scenic hiking trails and outdoor activities. They took the advice and went to Sai Kung for a kayaking trip and some new outdoor experiences. The Hong Kong Travel Buddy also helped contact the kayak operator for the couple’s exciting kayaking trip in Sai Kung, as well as recommended to them a local bakery renowned for pineapple buns, making unforgettable memories on their romantic getaway in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong comes alive this summer as HKTB launches ARTS IN HONG KONG, a year-long campaign to showcase the city’s extraordinary and enduring appeal as an arts and cultural hub on a global stage.

The ARTS IN HONG KONG campaign will support international events, in-depth community arts, cultural tours, interactive art tech experiences, art fairs, new openings and much more in celebration of the city’s incredible art scene. The programme launched in May, anchored by perennial stalwarts Art Basel and Christie’s Hong Kong Spring Auctions, plus a supporting cast of innovative new events and venues such as Palace Museum, which will open 2nd July 2022, as well as M+, French May and Art Central.

HKTB executive director Mr Dane Cheng comments, “In-depth travel experiences have become a major global trend, and arts and culture are a key driver of this trend. The Hong Kong Tourism Board has organised an ‘Art Month’ promotion for the past nine years when international events were held in town to generate city-wide art vibes. As well as the staging of large-scale events, new world-class art landmarks such as M+ and the Hong Kong Palace Museum are also opening their doors, boosting Hong Kong’s allure as an arts and cultural travel destination. As the city’s arts scene becomes richer than ever, the HKTB will make ‘Arts in Hong Kong’ a year-round promotional platform to raise awareness of the city’s always-on, diverse experience of arts and culture, and establish Hong Kong as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange.”

MAJOR NEW ART VENUES OPEN IN HONG KONG

Hong Kong Palace Museum & M+ | West Kowloon Cultural District

The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) has announced its opening on 2nd July 2022. It aspires to become one of the world’s leading cultural institutions committed to the study and appreciation of Chinese art and culture, while advancing dialogue among world civilisations through international partnerships.

The opening exhibitions of HKPM will be jointly curated by the HKPM and the Palace Museum in Beijing. 914 pieces of priceless treasures from the Palace Museum will be put on display, with some pieces being shown in Hong Kong for the first time. The artefacts will be exhibited alongside more than 100 exhibits on loan from local museums and cultural institutions.

M+, Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture opened in late 2021, is a must visit destination for the international art enthusiast. Its building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron with TFP Farrells and Arup, is an iconic presence overlooking Victoria Harbour while the facade is embedded with LEDs for screening moving image works, which can be seen from the West Kowloon waterfront promenade and Hong Kong Island.

The North Roof Garden displays the M+ Playscape, a collaborative semi-permanent installation work with The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum, New York. The exhibition programme explores works in all mediums from moving image, design, and architecture projects. Current exhibitions include Hong Kong: Here and Beyond, Things, Spaces, Interactions, Antony Gormley: Asian Field and The Dream of the Museum.

ARTS IN NEIGHBOURHOODS: SUPPORTING LOCAL TALENT

As well as its programme of major international events, the HKTB’s ARTS IN HONG KONG programme also aims to inspire residents and tourists to discover hidden gems of culture in neighbourhoods across the city, and experience incredible artworks off the beaten track.

Explore Five Cultural Themes on the Streets of Hong Kong

Across Old Town Central, Sham Shui Po and West Kowloon more than 20 cultural discovery hot spots have been curated under five major themes: Architectural Expression, Innovating Traditions, Cultivating Creativity, Urban Street Art and Arts Above. The HKTB has created an interactive map with arts and cultural guides for every location. The map includes fascinating anecdotes, like the mystery behind the embroidery of Chinese wedding gown tailor Koon Nam Wah Bridal. It offers a chance to get to know the burgeoning Hong Kong cultural scene inside out.

Hong Kong: Where Art Meets Technology

Hong Kong is at the forefront of the growing impetus for the integration of arts and technology. Widely considered one of the world-leading destinations for the NFT trade the city is bringing international events online in new and innovative ways.

HKTB has supported and produced three videos of technological artistic spectacles currently taking place in Hong Kong, allowing visitors to re-watch the experience.

The first is French May Arts Festival’s highlighted programme feature Intraverse, an interactive digital artwork by French artist, Ophelia Jacarini. The piece sees the artist’s dance performance captured in the Metaverse using virtual reality technology. The interactive digital artwork will be shown in Hong Kong till the 30th of June 2022 and can be viewed here.

The second video features a moving image work by artist Ellen Pau entitled The Shape of Light – a joint presentation by Art Basel and M+. The Shape of Light intertwines live-action performance and spectacular sci-fi sequences, delivering an awe-inspiring animation on the M+ Façade until the 17th of July 2022. This site-specific work explores the possibilities of the immaterial and the material, transforming light into digital objects. Featuring a popular scripture in Buddhism, The Heart Sutra, it draws upon new connections between the sutra and the energies of Hong Kong. The Shape of Light meditates on the spiritual concept ‘form is emptiness, emptiness is form’, expressed through sign language and other ritualistic gestures. Natural phenomena like fire, water, and light are all rendered in striking computer-generated animation.

Hong Kong Museum of Art’s (HKMoA) newest outdoor artwork installation, Resonance-In-Sight, co-created by local artists Kristof Crolla and Garvin Goepel explores the blurred boundaries between virtuality and reality. The piece invites members of the public to interact with the museum’s collections through augmented reality (AR) technology.

The artwork comprises physical and virtual components. The physical component, the outdoor artwork installation Resonance-In-Sight, is finely constructed with two streamlined metal structures in the outdoor area of the museum. The virtual component is a tailor-made AR application, through which visitors can connect with a special selection of the HKMoA’s four core collections (Chinese Antiquities, Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, China Trade Art, and Modern and Hong Kong Art) on their smartphone or tablet. Visisotrs can try to catch the birds in the painting Birds by 19th-century painter, Guan Lianchang, or admire a dynamic version of a landscape in Landscape after mi fu by Wu Changshuo of the Qing dynasty. They can also be a part of the ink painting Zhuangzi by Hong Kong ink painting master, Lui Shou-kwan. The old and the new coalesce through technological means in this unique artistic intervention, quintessential of the innovative cultural experiences Hong Kong has to offer.

From summer 2022 onwards, HKTB’s ARTS IN HONG KONG initiative will light up the city with cultural features, major events and more spotlighting Hong Kong as one of the foremost destinations for amazing artistic and cultural experiences.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has announced a revival plan that highlights Hong Kong’s vibrant developments and new experiences, aiming to generate a positive ambience and make the city top-of-mind destination for worldwide travellers when travel resumes.

With the theme “Together Towards New Horizons”, Tourism Update 2022 attracted 3,200 trade representatives from travel agencies, attractions, hotels, airlines, retailers, restaurants, and meeting and exhibition organisers from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and overseas markets. The HKTB shared insights into the latest tourism trends and its work plan for the coming year. Guest speakers from major organisations also outlined new developments to further enhance Hong Kong’s world-class tourism infrastructure.

HKTB Chairman Dr Y K Pang highlighted Hong Kong’s return to normality. “The fifth wave of the pandemic is subsiding,” he said. “Hong Kong’s daily life and economic activities are now gradually returning to normal, allowing us to stage large-scale events and prepare to welcome back visitors. Throughout the pandemic, Hong Kong never stopped building and upgrading its tourism infrastructure. We will see the grand opening of the Hong Kong Palace Museum this summer, while the third runway at Hong Kong International Airport is expected to go into service within the next couple of years. With these new infrastructure elements and the support of the Central and Hong Kong SAR Governments, Hong Kong’s competitive edge has held firm and we can head towards new horizons with confidence.”

HKTB will focus first on generating a positive ambience in the city, stimulating consumption, and maintaining Hong Kong’s profile globally by launching “Hong Kong Summer Treats”. The campaign will provide a wide range of discounts and promotional offerings, and will begin with “Arts in Hong Kong” – a campaign that supports international art and cultural events, such as Art Basel, which will return in a physical format.

As travellers across the region eagerly await visiting Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has unveiled a new series of distinctive sensory videos to bring the city’s great outdoors to everyone around the world.

The Great Outdoors Hong Kong (GOHK) 2021-2022 summer campaign has been designed to make the city’s stunning landscapes and open-air experiences accessible to all and to inspire travellers to enjoy the scenes in their full glory in the comfort of their homes.

Created under the 360 Hong Kong Moments initiative by the HKTB, the four distinctly themed 30-second videos offer a snapshot of the environmental acoustics that can be heard in far-flung corners of the city. Viewers are invited to turn up the volume and immerse themselves in all the fun that Hong Kong’s outdoors has to offer as they are taken on a journey of the senses.

A visit to the island of Peng Chau evokes a ship’s horn, a temple’s chimes and the hypnotic kau cim (shaking of fortune sticks).

Swaying leaves, dripping waterfalls, chirping birds and flapping wings angle for attention at Shing Mun Reservoir, the popular hiking spot renowned for its abundance of nature.

Splashing in the ocean and swooshing open a paper fan takes you to the coastal town of Stanley, biting into a piece of deliciously warm French toast at a local cha chaan teng diner.

The essence of Sai Kung, the city’s back garden, is brought to life with the myriad tones and timbres of the open sea, encountered during a lone stand-up paddle-boarding session.

Intended to be both calming and provoking, the video series shows individuals exploring the outskirts of Hong Kong through a hyper-focused lens, culminating in a three-minute video which brings the contrasting elements together in one exhilarating whole.

The videos form part of a broader GOHK campaign which will showcase 13 seasonal routes throughout the summer, covering hiking and sightseeing destinations, island-hopping itineraries and water sports experiences. There will be particular emphasis on water-based activities, which are easily accessible but often overlooked by visitors, with highlights including kayaking and snorkelling near

The GOHK website is filled with useful information, including insider tips, dining recommendations and transportation suggestions. The site also features a colourful mix of photos, written itineraries and a collection of short videos for beginners covering a variety of themes, including ‘adventure’, ‘antiquity’, ‘relaxation’ and ‘instagrammable’ for social media enthusiasts.

“As we chart the road to recovery, we are grateful to have over 100 prominent leaders of the community join us in promoting Hong Kong as the preferred host for global MICE events, ” Dr YK Pang, chairman of the HKTB said, as he extended a warm welcome to the ambassadors. “The Hong Kong Convention Ambassador programme is formulated not only to bring business events to the city when travel resumes. It will also promote the advantages of Hong Kong to the global business community and help drive multi-sectoral recovery. The economic multiplier effect of hosting world-class MICE events is huge. And the HKTB team is here to offer full support to the Ambassadors’ efforts,” he added.

On average, MICE visitors are high-yielding travellers who spend at least 20% more per capita than general visitors. Furthermore, they create a larger multiplier effect on the city’s economy. MICE events also help drive the recovery and development of the region, including the Greater Bay Area.

The city is poised to welcome its first-ever Greater Bay Area Artificial Intelligence Congress with over 2,400 participants in November 2021.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has announced its 2021-22 work plan, setting out a series of flexible short-term and medium-to-long-term strategies to prepare for the return of tourists, attract high-yield visitors, and drive the sustainable growth of the tourism industry.

HKTB executive director Dane Cheng said: “Despite the start of vaccinations against COVID- 19 worldwide, the pandemic situation remains volatile and unpredictable. We consider it unlikely Hong Kong will see a full resumption of cross-border travel in the next three to six months. However, we do expect it to be possible for Hong Kong to welcome tourists from selected markets. In formulating our strategies for 2021/22, we focused on two major areas.”

“Firstly, we saw a need to offer support to the trade and boost the ambience in Hong Kong, while ensuring the city’s continued exposure on the international stage ahead of the resumption of international travel. Secondly, we anticipate competition for tourists will be intense once the pandemic is over, with rival markets going to great lengths to bring visitors back. The HKTB is therefore setting aside resources for large-scale promotions so that Hong Kong will stand out against competing destinations,” he added.

Cheng stressed that the HKTB would maintain a flexible approach and be prudent in its use of resources while the pandemic continued. “Most of our additional funding of more than HKD 700 million (USD 90.16 million) for 2020-21 has not been used because of the pandemic, and the remainder will be returned in full to the government,” he said. “For 2021-22, the HKTB will receive additional funding of HKD 765 million (USD 98.53 million), similar to the amount allocated in last financial year.”

The HKTB will have a marketing budget of HKD 1,138 million (USD 146.57 million) for the 2021-22 financial year, including recurrent funding. Details of the deployment of the marketing budget is listed below:

Short-term strategies – Focusing on bringing back visitors

The HKTB has been boosting local consumption and encouraging the people of Hong Kong to explore the city. When the pandemic situation has stabilised, we will launch a new Spend-to- Redeem programme, called “Staycation Delights”, to offer an additional option for Hong Kong people to enjoy some of the experiences local tourism has to offer. We will kick start the Phase II of “Free Tour” programme once the government restrictions on local tours are lifted.

The HKTB will also launch a large-scale promotional platform called “Open House Hong Kong” when cross-border travel gradually resumes. The campaign will leverage exclusive experiences and citywide offers to drum up visitors’ desire to travel to Hong Kong.

The HKTB will revamp its Mainland strategies and will increase marketing resources for the Greater Bay Area (GBA) to attract visitors to travel to Hong Kong for leisure.

Medium-to-long-term strategies Capturing high-yield visitor segment

The HKTB is conducting a holistic review of Hong Kong’s tourism brand and positioning. We will formulate a long-term promotional strategy for sustainable development of the local tourism sector. When cross-border travel gradually resumes, we will launch large-scale promotions on the new tourism brand on multiple channels, including digital platforms in source markets worldwide, together with partnerships with major international media outlets to present Hong Kong’s reinvented tourism image.

Ongoing initiatives – Supporting trade and maintaining HK’s exposure

The HKTB will continue to enhance the subsidy schemes and sponsor trade members’ participation in trade events to help hasten their business recovery.

Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has registered a drop of 93.6% drop in visitor arrivals in 2020. According to the provisional number of visitor arrivals in 2020, announced by HKTB, the destination registered only 3.57 million arrivals.

Arrivals in January 2020 alone accounted for the majority of the annual total. As Covid-19 started to spread around the world in February, Hong Kong limited entry to overseas visitors and introduced stringent quarantine measures from mid-March onwards. Most people arriving in Hong Kong thereafter were visiting family members or travelling for other essential reasons, reducing the number of tourists to almost zero.

HKTB chairman, YK Pang said: “The tourism industry has been through an extremely tough year. HKTB has renewed its strategies and approach in response to the immense challenges of the pandemic. As visitors could not come to Hong Kong in person, we took the initiative to concentrate on improving the city’s atmosphere and ambiance while maintaining its international exposure, so as to attract visitors back to Hong Kong as soon as the COVID-19 situation eases. Looking ahead to 2021, the HKTB is well prepared for the resumption of travel. We will further strengthen our cooperation with the travel trade to jointly develop new products and itineraries and enhance Hong Kong’s service quality.”

HKTB will be releasing the full details of December visitor arrivals and arrivals from individual markets in 2020 on 29 January 2021.

In response to recent positive progress in the Hong Kong government’s discussions with other destinations on forming travel bubbles, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is gradually resuming promotions in the local and source markets, reviving tourism through a combination of short-term and long-term strategies.

Locally, the HKTB is restarting promotions with the ‘Holiday at Home’ campaign to create positive atmosphere in Hong Kong and encourage consumption.

HKTB chairman Dr YK Pang said: “The HKTB is working diligently on the ‘Open House Hong Kong’ platform. It is anticipated that the mainland, in particular the Greater Bay Area, and some short haul markets will be open for travel relatively soon and the HKTB is planning promotions and tactical offers targeting these markets, which will be launched immediately once cross-boundary travel resumes. In the meantime, we will continue to maintain Hong Kong’s presence in source markets through a variety of promotions and mega events.”

While the global pandemic remains volatile, the seven major international MICE events include first-time events for Hong Kong and the Greater China region, and the largest MICE event of its kind in Asia.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced that Hong Kong has been recently chosen as the host city for four international MICE events, including the city’s first-ever events of high strategic values, and two repeated events amidst the COVID-19 challenges. These business events are expected to bring in about 10,000 high-yield visitors in total and deliver great economic contribution to the city and drive multi-sector development.

Dr YK Pang, chairman of the HKTB, said: “It is encouraging to see major events to be held in our city for the very first time, such as the International Airline Transport Association (IATA) World Cargo Symposium, Asia Sports Technology Conference and the Congress of the Asian Society of Transplantation (CAST) 2023. It demonstrates international event organisers’ confidence in Hong Kong as a strategic, safe and hygienic destination for high-profile business events. The HKTB will continue to proactively engage international and Hong Kong organisers to bid for hosting rights of major MICE events and step up efforts in attracting repeated events with a view to maintain Hong Kong’s status as The World’s Meeting Place.”

The HKTB has prepared a series of recovery campaigns for the MICE industry and is closely monitoring the development of the pandemic in various source markets. The campaigns will be launched when the time is right.

In view of the uncertainties concerning the Covid-19 pandemic, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced that its annual signature event ‘Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival’ will, for the first time, take on a virtual format in November.

Explaining this strategic move, HKTB chairman Dr YK Pang said: “The Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival has been one of the most popular events among locals and tourists alike since its inception over a decade ago. Despite the Covid-19 outbreak this year, we hope people can continue to enjoy Hong Kong’s unique dining culture while providing business opportunities for the local F&B sector amidst this challenging economic climate. Organising the festival virtually allows us to achieve both objectives without compromising public health and safety.” Dr Pang added, “The virtual festival will strive to recreate the festive, joie de vivre atmosphere the event is famous for, by offering access to exclusive wine and gourmet experiences curated by experts on the subject. Taking advantage of the virtual format, the event will be extended from the usual four days to several weeks so that more people can take part regardless of time and geographical constraints.”

To preserve as much original flavour of the physical event as possible, HKTB is building an online hub where most of the festival programmes will take place. A variety of wine merchants will be providing special discounts and products tailored for the festival, which participants can browse and purchase in a virtual exhibition space. Meanwhile, renowned wine and food critics, chefs and wine experts will be invited to speak on wine-pairing and culinary topics in virtual workshops and classes.

The event was launched in 2009, after Hong Kong and Bordeaux signed the memorandum of understanding on co-operation in wine-related business.

Visitors to Hong Kong will get to experience a different and organic side of the city through the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s (HKTB) upcoming Great Outdoors campaign.

They will get a glimpse of Hong Kong that is far removed from its buzzing urban centre image and instead see tranquil mountaintops, greenery and country parks.

The HKTB has engaged local photographers who have captured some of the landscapes in the city.

Visitors can view Hong Kong as a nature-filled geological area by following Your Guide to Hiking & Cycling in Hong Kong, recently published by the tourism board.

The guide takes readers into a range of nature trails. The trails are an hour or two from the city centre, making them accessible by taxi or a MTR ride away.

It is divided into three different themes: Hiking in Heritage; Picture-Perfect Vistas; and Geological Wonders.

Under each section are suggested trails that suit the theme, along with the time needed for completion and difficulty level. It also features a few cycling trails for those who want to explore the city from another perspective.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has revealed five new walking trails that are designed to showcase the city’s heritage.

Aimed at independent travellers, the new trails focus on Hong Kong’s Old Town Central district, where the architecture and culture is said to reflect “the union of the eastern and the western influences to the city”.

The walking trails have been created under five themes: heritage, arts, dining, treasure hunt and “something of everyone”. The first, entitled “Time Traveller”, takes walkers from Possession Point, where the British flag was first officially raised, to the Tai Ping Shan area, where many Chinese settled in the 1840s.

Under the art theme, the “Crazy for Art” trail offers a stroll down the historic, gallery-lined Hollywood Road, while the “Tasting Hong Kong” dining trail provides a glimpse into Hong Kong’s food scene, including local restaurants and street food stalls.

Under the treasure hunt theme, the “Hidden Gems in Back Alleys” walking trail includes visits to the antique area of Upper Lascar Row, the design studios of Tai Ping Shan Street and knick-knack stores of Bridges Street. And finally, the “Something for Everyone” tour covers some of the city’s top landmarks and points of interests.

The new walking trails are being promoted by the HKTB among Hong Kong’s key international source markets.

GTA embarked on the next phase of its Hong Kong Strategic Partnership Program (SPP) this week, with the hosting of a major fam trip.

In a three-way tie-up, GTA worked with the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) to bring its top-selling travel agents and members of the media to Hong Kong. And the company has also partnered with TV channel tvN, which is in Hong Kong to film the first part of its new travel series, MUST (My Unexpected Sweet Trip).

The travel show will see South Korean actress and anchor, Clara Lee, meet with a local Hong Kong celebrity to discover Hong Kong’s most romantic attractions and activities. MUST will then continue shooting in other Asian cities and the new travel series will be aired on tvN across the Asia Pacific region immediately after post-production in August.

The fam trip runs from 9-13 June.

“We are very pleased to partner with GTA and bring in trade partners from nine markets in Asia Pacific. Hong Kong is a truly unique city, featuring vibrant living culture, diverse culinary options and many more for all visitors with different needs,” said Anthony Lau, executive director of the HKTB.

“We hope this trip can offer our overseas partners an in-depth understanding of the city, during which they will experience the exciting international dragonboat races and different facets of Hong Kong through the new tour products developed under the HKTB’s ‘Explore Hong Kong Tours’ platform.”

Travel agents attending the fam trip will be offered the chance to meet Ms Lee for a filming session aboard the Duk Ling junk boat while sailing across Victoria Harbour.

And as well as helping to film tvN’s new show, GTA will also create its own destination video in Hong Kong, which it will then showcase to travel agents in GTA Workshops across Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.

“GTA’s SPP Hong Kong is focused on providing agents with a wealth of information about Hong Kong, and giving them more confidence to sell the destination to their clients,” explained Cyndi Ng, GTA’s head of market development & strategic partnerships. “Our strategic partnership with tvN is an exciting and unique way of spreading the SPP message even further, providing agents – and tvN’s wider Asia Pacific audience – with deeper insights into this fantastic destination.”

To welcome the travel agents, GTA and HKTB hosted a welcome dinner on Thursday night at Hong Kong’s Michelin-starred Ah Yat Harbour View Restaurant, which was also attended by Clara Lee.

During the five-day fam trip, agents will also take helicopter ride over Hong Kong from The Peninsula Hotel, a Ngong Ping 360 cable car ride to a fisherman’s village in Tai O, and celebrate the Hong Kong International Dragonboat Festival courtesy of HKTB.

Five Asian cruise destinations have teamed up to jointly promote and fund the growth of the industry.

The newly-formed Asia Cruise Cooperation (ACC) includes tourism authorities in Hainan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan and Xiamen. They will now work together to provide support to cruise lines wanting to develop Asian cruise products and itineraries.

The ACC initiative follows the launch of the Asia Cruise Fund in 2014.

According to the partners, the project will “provides a one-stop platform to support cruise lines’ strategies in Asia including facilitating itinerary development, sharing industry and market insights, enhancing cruise lines’ marketing efforts with funding support and creating consumer demand for cruising”.

Anthony Lau, executive director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), commented; “The prospects for this burgeoning sector are unlimited, and it’s no exaggeration to say the future of cruise tourism lies in Asia. Hong Kong… is determined to continue to play a pivotal role in the ACC in initiating joint promotions to attract more international cruise lines and yield greater mutual benefits for all members of the ACC.”

International cruise lines have also expressed their support for the ACC. Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises, said; “We are very proud of our close working relationship with the Asia Cruise Cooperation and we look forward to continuing to work with them to grow cruise tourism in Asia.”

Dr Zinan Liu, Royal Caribbean’s president of North Asia & China, added; “When planning an itinerary, cruise lines tend to choose attractive ports of call in the same region. As a result, we believe it’s essential to collaborate with our ACC partnering destinations in order to attract international cruise companies and develop new itineraries.”

In 2015 an estimated 1,000 scheduled cruises operated in Asia, featuring more than 3,500 port calls.

Hong Kong and Taiwan have joined forces to entice more travellers to visit both destinations in the same trip.

The tourism boards of the two destinations, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and the Taiwan Tourism Bureau (TTB), have formed a new partnership that will target the US outbound market, with the aim of attracting more American leisure travellers to Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The US is the largest long-haul visitor source market for both Hong Kong and Taiwan, and these trans-Pacific ties are being enhanced by a series of new flights between the US and both Hong Kong and Taiwan. Currently there are more than 200 weekly flight connections between the US and Taiwan/Hong Kong, and this is expected to increase 6.5% in 2016.

Building on this momentum, the new multi-destination initiative will aim to persuade American travellers to visit both destinations in a single trip. The two markets are linked by more than 60 daily flights.

“According to our survey, 92% of visitors from the US arriving in Hong Kong would like to visit other destinations on the same trip,” said HKTB’s executive director, Anthony Lau. “The trend of multi-destination travel in Asia has been gaining importance in recent years, as tourists want to get the most out of each trip. We are confident that this cooperation between Hong Kong and Taiwan will help draw more visitors to Asia and drive our mutual business.”

TTB’s deputy director-general, Dr Wayne Liu, commented; “Data shows that in recent years the US arrivals [have] been increasing steadily, and the growth was the fastest among all long haul markets in the last year. This suggests that travelling to Taiwan has already sparked interest among American tourists.

“With the increasing of direct flights between US, Taiwan and Hong Kong, we believe by joining hands with Hong Kong, promoting a full Asia experience in one single trip, could attract more American visitors. We are confident that this would soon become their top choice for travel to Asia,” he added.

The two tourist boards said they want to focus on the “east-meets-west culture” of Hong Kong, along with the city’s “world class culinary scene”. Taiwan’s “superb local food and living culture” will be highlighted in the promotions.

“The setting, lifestyle and food culture of Hong Kong and Taiwan are complementary to each other and fascinate many visitors,” they added.

The Greater China region has the potential to deliver 83 million cruise passengers per year, according to new research from the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB).

Presented on the opening day of Cruise Shipping Miami event, two new reports have highlighted how regional ports, including Hong Kong, are gearing up to tap into this huge potential market by upgrading their cruise infrastructure.

The ‘Asia Cruise Potential & Passenger Behaviour Study’ reveals a potential 83m cruise passengers in just seven source markets within Greater China – four times the current number of cruise passengers worldwide. Hong Kong alone has a cruise potential of 54m passengers, the report states.

The study also reveals that the make-up of these passengers is younger and more family-oriented than in traditional source markets such as North America and Europe. As many as 69% of respondents from the family segment with children under the age of 16 said they intend to take a cruise, while more than 51% of respondents between the ages of 20 and 29 said they are planning a cruise holiday in future.

The second study, ‘Asia’s Cruise Port Development Study’, identifies 21 ports within a six to seven cruise days of Hong Kong which already have concrete plans to upgrade infrastructure, expand tourism offerings and improve destination management, such as the issuing of visas.

These ports include Sanya, Xiamen, Zhoushan, Qingdao and Yantai in China, Keelung, Hualien, Kaohsiung, Anping, Taichung, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu in Taiwan, Miyakojima and Takamatsu in Japan, Mokpo and Yeosu in South Korea, Hon La in Vietnam, and Manila, Boracay and Puerto Princesa in the Philippines.

According to the study, within five years half of these ports will be able to receive cruise ships in excess of 100,000 tonnes.

“The studies highlighted both the potential for growth in Asia cruise tourism and the region’s commitment to the industry,” said Anthony Lau, executive director of the HKTB. “Hong Kong… is the perfect location to tap into the growing cruise potential in the region.

“With the results of the two surveys showing the great potential and committed development, combined with the Asia Cruise Fund, Asia’s cruise tourism is ready to take off.”

Globally, a record 23m people are expected to take a cruise holiday this year.

Last year’s street protests in Hong Kong appear to have had an impact on the number of mainland Chinese visitors to the city.

Channel NewsAsia reports that total mainland Chinese visits to Hong Kong during this month’s Lunar New Year holiday period fell for the first time in about 20 years. The decline of 0.3% over the first three days of the holiday was small, but could be representative of a wider trend.

Mainland China contributed 47.3 million of Hong Kong’s 60.4m arrivals in 2014, and the city is coming under pressure to limit the number of Chinese visitors.

Hong Kong’s chief executive, CY Leung, said he would raise the issue with Beijing at a meeting next month.

“If we have to restrict or decrease the numbers of mainland Chinese coming to Hong Kong then we must continue to discuss this with [China],” Leung was quoted saying.

As well as the pro-democracy demonstrations, Hong Kong has also experience anti-mainland protests in shopping malls – a trend that Joseph Tung, executive director of Hong Kong’s Travel Industry Council, called “alarming”.

“Put yourself in their shoes. If you feel as though people are not welcoming you, why would you come to Hong Kong?” Tung asked.

Hong Kong’s visitor arrivals figures for the month of January 2015 or the Lunar New Year period have not yet been released.

The Asia Cruise Fund, which was launched by Taiwan and Hong Kong to drive investment in the Asian cruise industry, has added two new members – the Philippines and the Chinese island province of Hainan.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and Taiwan Tourism Bureau (TTB) welcomed two new members – Hainan Provincial Tourism Development Commission and the Philippine Department of Tourism – with an official ceremony held during the Cruise Shipping Asia-Pacific (CSAP) conference in Hong Kong.

The fund’s two new members, together with the HKTB and the TTB, were joined at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal by 400 delegates, including cruise line executives, and representatives from port authorities and national tourism organisations.

“When the HKTB initiated the concept of a cruise co-op fund, we envisioned a strategic alliance which benefits not only cruise lines through funding support for them to market their products, but also the member ports and the Asian region at large, as new itineraries and more ship calls to Asia ultimately enhance consumer interest in cruise travel in the region,” explained Dr Peter Lam, chairman of the HKTB.

“We were pleased to receive Taiwan’s support for the idea back in February, which made the launch of the Asia Cruise Fund possible. We are excited that Hainan and the Philippines are joining us in our effort. We would like to thank them for their support for the fund, and above all, for their confidence in the Asian cruise industry.

“Our four destinations will work closely together to encourage cruise lines and our neighbouring ports to join and leverage the Asia Cruise Fund to expand their business. Meanwhile, Hong Kong will continue to enrich its cruise offerings and promote its diverse onshore experiences, including unique cultural experiences, and world-class dining and shopping, to cruise passengers from the region and around the world,” he added.

Founded by the HKTB and the TTB in April this year, the Asia Cruise Fund aims to promoting regional cooperation in the area of cruise tourism. This will include encouraging international cruise lines to deploy more ships to the region, and support the development and marketing of cruise products.

Hainan and the Philippines will become official members of the Asia Cruise Fund in December 2014 and April 2015 respectively.

Star Cruises’ flagship cruise liner, SuperStar Virgo, returned to Hong Kong today (8 April 2014).

The 75,338-tonne, 13-deck ship will homeport in the city from now until 26 October 2014, offering a series of cruises to destinations in Taiwan, China and Vietnam.

The SuperStar Virgo docked at Hong Kong’s Ocean Terminal on Tuesday morning, carrying 1,600 passengers on a voyage from Nha Trang. The vessel was welcomed by several local officials including Hong Kong’s tourism commissioner, Philip Yung, and the executive director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Anthony Lau.

The arrival marks the ship’s first Hong Kong homeport season for six years.

“SuperStar Virgo is an immensely popular cruise ship,” said Genting Hong Kong’s chief operating officer, Blondel So. “Many tourists from China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Australia, as well as Southeast Asia and India, are flying to Hong Kong to take advantage of this opportunity and have a chance to explore the city.

“This deployment also serves as a prelude to the two 150,000-tonne mega-cruise ships we have recently commissioned to build for the Asian market. It will pave the way for their respective deliveries in 2016 and 2017,” he added.

SuperStar Virgo will set sail for Kaohsiung tonight on a three-day voyage. During the six-month deployment, the ship will offer weekly four-day cruises to Kaohsiung and Taichung, four-day voyages to Sanya and Halong Bay and one-night cruises around the South China Sea. Once a month, the ship will embark on seven-day cruises to Taiwan’s three biggest cities – Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung.

For the first time this year, the GCC market has taken the lead in visitor arrivals to Hong Kong within the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s new markets category.

Latest statistics reveal that between the 1 January to 28 February 2014, 6,487 visitors travelled to the destination from the GCC, a YTD increase of 18.5%. Within the month of February, 2,538 visitors from the GCC were recorded, marking an increase of 19.9% compared to 2013.

Hong Kong and Taiwan have joined forces to fund the development of the Asian cruise industry.

The new ‘Asia Cruise Fund’, which is a first for the region’s cruise sector, was initiated by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and the Taiwan Tourism Bureau (TTB). It will see ports in both territories provide funds to subsidise cruise companies to develop and market their product, if they include Hong Kong and Taiwan in their itineraries.

The HKTB’s executive director, Anthony Lau, said the scheme “marks a significant step towards regional cruise co-operation”.

“We believe the fund will show our dedication and commitment to cruise tourism development and reinforce cruise operators’ confidence in deploying more ships to Asia, benefiting not only the participating ports but also cruise lines and other industry stakeholders,” Lau said.

Dr Wayne Liu, deputy director-general of the TTB, added that the initiative could also be expanded across the region in the future.

“We will collaborate to encourage more Asian ports to join the fund in order to accelerate the development of the region’s cruise market and enhance the attractiveness of the region to cruise passengers,” Dr Liu said.

Asian cruises accounted for just over 4.4% of global cruise ship deployments in 2013. But it is also one of the world’s fastest-growing markets; according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Asia will see a 31.6% increase in ship deployments in 2014.

Hong Kong starts promotional campaign in India

marketing campaign in India this year.

The campaign is based around the novel Hold My Hand written by Datta. The HKTB firmly believes that the passion of Indian consumers for books and Datta’s popularity in the market will generate huge interest in Hold My Hand and Hong Kong, the city where the love story in the book takes place.

“India, with its rapidly growing outbound tourism, is one of Hong Kong’s five key new markets. We hope that our ground breaking PR initiatives, including the book, will help us consolidate Hong Kong’s presence in the market and attract more Indian visitors to Hong Kong,” Anthony Lau, Executive Director of HKTB.

From the novel, HKTB will spin off a series of promotional activities, using Social Networking Services (SNS) and mobile apps, with a view to raising awareness of Hong Kong as an exciting, vibrant travel destination among Indian consumers.

I am very happy to be associated with the HKTB. My previous books are mostly set in urban India, and working with the HKTB gave me the opportunity to try a different setting. Having been to Hong Kong myself, I would say the city is fantastic for a romantic adventure. With its diversity and energy, Hong Kong provides the perfect backdrop for Hold My Hand, allowing me to subject the characters to a range of different emotions and experiences.”

A surge in visitor arrivals from mainland China boosted Hong Kong’s tourist traffic in the first half of the year, offsetting declines from other markets.

According to the latest data from the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), the number of mainland visitors to Hong Kong jumped 16.2% in the first six months of 2013, to 7.84 million. This means that approximately two thirds (65.7%) of Hong Kong’s total visitor arrivals now come from the mainland.

Other markets however, declined in the first half of the year. Short-haul markets contributed 2.27m visitors, 4.2% down year-on-year, with a 29.1% slump in visitors from Japan contributing to the decline. Long-haul markets also fell, down 4.1% to 1.51m visitors in the January-June period.

Along with China, Hong Kong was boosted by other emerging markets. Arrivals from the GCC region (+11.3% to 17,915), Russia (+24.6% to 79.302) and Vietnam (+13.8% to 35,085) all saw double-digit growth, albeit from lower bases.

In total, the Hong Kong welcomed 11.94m international visitors in the first half of the year, 8.7% more than the same period in 2012.

According to the latest data from the Hong Kong Tourism Board, total arrivals to the city climbed 13.8% to 4.37 million in July 2012. But arrivals from the mainland reached 3.26m – 21.9% more than the same month last year. Chinese visitors now account for almost three-quarters of all arrivals to Hong Kong.

Other source markets didn’t fare so well, however. Visitation from long-haul markets declined 5.4% to 363,400, with arrivals from Europe (-5.1% to 162,100), the Americas (-4.9% to 143,600) and Australia and New Zealand (-7.4% to 57,800) all dropping off.

Arrivals from short-haul markets, excluding mainland China, also fell – down 4.6% year-on-year to 742,000. The main contribution to the decline was an 11.6% reduction in visitors from South & Southeast Asia.

For the first seven months of the year Hong Kong welcomed 26.68m visitors – 15.2% more than the same period last year.

Hong Kong welcomed the arrival of Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas cruise liner for the first time on Friday.

“This maiden visit by Voyager of the Seas demonstrates Hong Kong’s position as a cruise hub and a ‘must-visit’ port in the region,” said Anthony Lau, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board. “Our new world-class cruise terminal, which is expected to commence operation in mid-2013 to serve even the largest vessels in the world, will further expand our capability as a cruise hub.”

A view of Hong KongVisitor arrivals to Hong Kong exceeded four million for the first time in August, setting a new monthly record for the city. The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced that arrivals in August reached 4.07 million, a year-on-year growth of 17.7%. In the first eight months of 2011, arrivals amounted to 27.24 million – a 16.2% increase compared to the same period last year.

Commenting on the new single-month record, HKTB Chairman, James Tien said; “We are encouraged by the tourism performance in August. Summer has always been a peak season for travel among short-haul visitors. Following a historic high of 3.8 million arrivals in July, this is the second month in a row that arrivals set a new monthly record.

“Overall, during the summer period from June to August, we welcomed a total of 10,940,371 arrivals, 18.8% more than the corresponding period last year. Both mainland China and Southeast Asia achieved outstanding performance, mainly because of the favourable economic climate and appreciation of currencies in these markets. In addition, the local travel trade also proactively launched timely promotions to make the best of the business opportunities arising from the peak travel season.

“Looking into the remaining months of this year, we expect Mainland China and the short-haul markets will continue to be the growth engine of our tourism. We project that Mainland arrivals will go up by around 8% to 10% during the National Day Golden Week. The HKTB has already planned for a series of promotions, which will be rolled out in the coming months to keep up the growth momentum.”

In August, visitor arrivals from mainland China grew by 23% year-on-year to exceed 2.91 million, making it the highest-ever mainland arrival figure for a single month. More than 1.51 million, or 51.9% of all mainland arrivals were overnight visitors – 17.7% more than last year. Those who travelled under the Individual Visit Scheme reached 1.95 million, a 22.9% increase year-on-year and 67% of all mainland arrivals in the month.

Southeast Asian market also saw increase travel. In August, arrivals from the region surged by 25.2% to around 250,000. Double-digit growth was recorded for such markets as Malaysia (+28.6%), the Philippines (+10.8%) and Thailand (+10.6%), while Indonesian arrivals saw a jump of 120%.

In North Asia, South Korea sustained the upward trend in August, causing arrivals to increase by 16.4% to 104,831. As for Japan, arrivals rose by 1.6% – the first month positive growth was recorded for the market since the 311 earthquake in March 2011, an indication that consumers’ propensity for outbound travel is recovering.  In Taiwan, cross-strait direct flights caused overall arrivals to fall by 3.7% in August.

There was milder growth in arrivals from long-haul markets. In August, arrivals from The Americas and Europe, Africa and the Middle East measured an increase of 2.7% and 2.8% respectively, while those from Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific remained static.
