Global golf tourism organisation IAGTO urged tourism boards and golf suppliers to conduct business as usual and be prepared to invest more money into promotions of golf travel as soon as the fear brought by coronavirus passes.

The coronavirus outbreak has clouded the strong performances of the sector in 2019 and a positive outlook for 2020. In January, golf courses, hotels and golf resorts throughout Asia reported that their forward bookings for golf visitor arrivals were up, on average, by 4.4% compared to the same time the previous year. IAGTO’s 64 member golf tour operators in China performed well in 2019, with vacations booked by Chinese golfers up 7.4% and forward bookings for 2020 up 5.3% year on year.

However, within a few weeks of this data was gathered, all sectors of the tourism industry suffered from travel restrictions imposed resulting from the spread of coronavirus. The new illness also resulted in a general fear of travel.

IAGTO chief executive Peter Walton said, “While golf tourism is not immune to global or regional crises – be they economic, security, environmental or health by nature – we have seen over the past two decades that golf travel bounces back quicker than most other tourism industry sectors once the risk or fear has run its course.

“A downturn in visitor arrivals often goes hand in hand with a tightening of belts, but our advice to suppliers and tourist boards in regions affected by Covid-19 is to ensure that promotional funds be readily available the moment that confidence returns to the market. Don’t get caught unprepared or with insufficient funds if normality returns sooner than expected.”

China’s resort island of Hainan will welcome the world’s golf tourism industry next month, when the third Asia Golf Tourism Convention (AGTC) heads to the Mission Hills resort.

Taking place from 24-27 March, the industry’s biggest annual event is being organised by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).

“2014 will mark the third consecutive year of growth in golf travel worldwide for the majority of the global golf tourism industry, and this is the perfect moment to be taking the AGTC to China,” said IAGTO’s chief executive, Peter Walton.

“More buyers than ever before will be attending the event, demonstrating the importance of both China and other golf destinations in the Asia Pacific to the golf traveller. China is the fastest growing outbound golf market in Asia and also has some of the most exciting golf destinations in the region, Hainan Island is one of the most rapidly developing golf destinations in the world.”

This year’s AGTC is expected to attract more than 500 attendees, including 146 buyers from 29 countries. They will be able to meet with more than 160 supplier companies from 20 countries, including many from the Asia Pacific region.

Tour operators specialising in golf holidays have seen a 9.3% increase in sales in 2012 compared to 2011.

New statistics from the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) found growth in the golf sector with the increases expected to continue into 2013 and 2014.

“With our report showing a steady, healthy growth of the sector, I believe we can all look forward to a third consecutive year of golf tourism growth in 2014 – an optimistic forecast I am confident will be reflected in next year’s global golf tourism survey,” said Peter Walton, chief executive of IAGTO at the International Golf Travel Market this week.

“Golf resorts, courses and hotels, should continue to focus on their individual strengths, but also, and more importantly, on working together with public sector bodies, to promote their golf destination and position it in the best possible way to attract more golf travellers and golf tour operator business,” he added.

Pattaya has been chosen as the host venue for the 2nd Asia Golf Tourism Convention.

The event, which will take place from 29 April to 2 May 2013 at the Royal Cliff Resort, is expected to attract more than 500 delegates to the Thai resort town.

The event is run by the International Association Of Golf Tour Operators – a trade organisation whose members are responsible for 85% of the worlds golf holiday package bookings.

Itthiphol Kunplome, Mayor of Pattaya, and Peter Walton, CEO of IAGTO, signed the agreement confirming Pattaya as the 2013 host city. It is estimated that business emanating from the event is likely to generate millions of dollars in revenue for Asia’s golf courses, hotels and resorts.

Peter Walton CEO of IGATO said; “We anticipate there will be over 180 leading golf tour operators attending, roughly 50% from the Asian markets and the rest from around the World. This will have a major economic impact not only for Pattaya but for Thailand’s tourist industry as a whole. According to our research, the average golf vacationer tends to spend in the destinations around 120% more per person per day than other vacationers.”

Mayor Itthiphol added; “There are huge benefits for Pattaya hosting the AGTC. We won the IAGTO Golf Destination of the Year Award 2012 for Asia and Australasia, and now winning the right to host this prestigious convention, we have a great opportunity to develop our city and to represent Thailand’s golf industry. It will definitely boost our economy as all these delegates will have the chance to visit our leading hotels, see our fantastic tourist attractions and to sample our first class golf courses.”

The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau played a major role in assisting Pattaya’s bid.
