Cited as the world’s most popular location per number of tagged stories and the eighth most posted city by Instagram in 2017, Jakarta’s tourism industry has traditionally been powered by the country’s domestic market, with the capital pulling visitors from all over Indonesia.

Until now the city has, perhaps, not had the appeal of Southeast Asian neighbours Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, however figures released at the end of 2017 show an uptick of 25 %in the number of foreign visitors to Indonesia, which can only be a good thing for Jakarta’s MICE market. That said, let’s take a look at some of the best meetings and events hotels found in the ‘Big Durian’.

Discovery Hotel & Convention Ancol

Found in the centre of Jakarta Bay’s Dreamland development, 25 minutes from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Discovery Hotel & Convention Ancol is adjacent to the Ancol ‘Dunia Fantasy’ and Eco Park.  Featuring rope courses, paintball range, jogging/cycling tracks and the Pasar Seni art village, which make it an ideal spot for team building exercises or unwind with a few well placed ‘splats’ to a friendly colleague.

The hotel has a solid selection of recently refurbished meeting and function rooms, great for weddings, banquets and parties. While the Discovery Convention Centre itself has a capacity of 2,500 people, spread over 13 sun-filled rooms over looking the centre’s pool and the Dunia Fantasy.

The highlight of the DCC is the high powered Kweni Boardroom above), where hotshot execs can talk shop, backed up by video conference facilities on an LED-TV wall, as well as an LCD screen-glassboard and its own reception room pantry and private bathrooms.

The Jakarta Convention Centre (JCC)

Also known as the Balai Sidang Jakarta Convention Centre, the JCC is one of the country’s most famous and impressive venues for…well, for everything. Whether it’s a conference, weddings, companywide AGMs or even fashion shows and concerts, the 13 function rooms and two exhibition halls are prepped for all eventualities.

Both of the exhibition halls each feature 1,000sqm reception lobbies and 9m-high ceilings, integrated telecoms and audio-visuals, single and three-phase power sources, plus compressed air on request. If needed, Hall A and Hall B (above) have direct access from the road for easy unloading.

Next are the 5,000-seat Plenary Hall, an in-the-round theatre space; the 3,921sqm Assembly Hall, which seats up to 2,500 seated guests and 4,500 standing, and last but not least, the 2,109sqm Cendrawasih Room, which is fitted with automated floor-to-ceiling partitions to customise the room space.

Linked to The Sultan Hotel & Residence Jakarta (formerly the Jakarta Hilton International) via the moving walkways of the air conditioned underground tunnel, the convenience and versatility of the JCC makes it my pick of Jakarta’s MICE venues.

Shangri La Jakarta

Another exceptional hotel, The Shangri-La, Hotel Jakarta is aimed squarely at the business traveller. Featuring 661 rooms and suites, 16 meeting and function rooms, a VIP lounge, satellite and teleconferencing and audio-visual equipment, all complimented by a responsive and highly efficient event team, it’s almost impossible to go wrong when MICE-ing here.

The standout however is the 1785sqm Grand Ballroom (above) which, with a maximum capacity of approximately 3000 people, has made quite a name for itself as one of the preeminent weddings venues in the Indonesian capital. But, with the help of the Shangri La team, it is easily adapted into a meeting, conference or awards space.

Grand Hyatt Jakarta

The Grand Hyatt is up there as one of my first choices to lay my head whenever I visit Jakarta, and its deserved reputation for excellence and comprehensive MICE set-up has made it a hard decision to not crown the luxury hotel as Jakarta’s leading meetings and events venue too.

Indeed, The Grand Ballroom is probably the first choice for most event planners, and has played host to many of the town’s swankier affairs. Able to cope with a range of different sized events with contrasting needs, the 702sqm space can be sectioned into three 34 sqm mini-ballrooms, so each individual event is pitched perfectly without being overwhelmed by too big an area.

Meeting rooms include the Krakatau 161sqm work area, which like the Grand Ballroom, can be divided into three smaller spaces; the Majapahit Suite and Plaza Suite Penthouse are for more intimate and social occasions with room for between 60 and 100 guests.

Newly available is the Residence ONFIVE which, like its name implies is a residential-style event facility, with communal living area, kitchen, lounge and  two multipurpose cabanas and three terraces overlooking the city. Marvellous.

Vietjet has revealed plans to launch its first flights to Indonesia, with a new service connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Jakarta.

The route was announced at an event in the Indonesian capital attended by HE Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam in Indonesia, and Budi Karya Sumadi, Indonesia’s Minister of Transportation. Vietjet said the new route would “meet increasing demand for travel between the two countries and boost regional trading and integration”.

“Since its inception, Vietjet has been developing friendly and professional flight services in operating key international routes, helping connect Vietnam’s main business and tourism hubs with foreign destinations, including Jakarta,” said Dinh Viet Phuong, Vietjet’s vice president.

“With its mission of making air travel approachable and possible for everyone and building a future in the air, Vietjet’s new route from HCMC to Jakarta will boost ties between these two economic, cultural, financial hubs, thus help boost regional trading and integration.”

Commencing on 20 December 2017, the new service will operate daily, direct between the two Southeast Asian cities. Flights will depart HCMC’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport at 2040 and arrive at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 2340, following a three-hour flight. The return flight then takes off at 0140 and lands back in HCMC at 0440.

Vietjet will become the first low-cost carrier serving the HCMC-Jakarta route, and Indonesia becomes the 12th Asian country or territory in Vietjet’s network.

Tourism officials from the Chinese beach resort of Sanya have held a promotional event in Indonesia, with the aim of attracting more visitors from Southeast Asia’s largest country.

The “2017 Sanya Celebration” was held in Jakarta and featured two parts: an industry roadshow and a promotional meeting, which attracted almost 150 industry personnel and journalists, and an exhibition area which promoted Sanya through photo galleries, virtual reality games, food displays and cultural performances.

The event forms part of the local government’s efforts to enhance Sanya’s popularity among international travellers. The city welcomed 4.95 million visitors in the first quarter of 2017, but only 157,000 – about 3% – of these were non-Chinese.

“Sanya aims to become a top tourism destination with its natural beauty and varied culturally themed projects,” said Deng Zhong, president of the Sanya People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. “We hope to attract more overseas visitors to travel, work and live in the city, and more investors to explore new investment opportunities as well.”

Indonesia has been identified as a target by Sanya due to its large population and strong air connectivity with China. Indonesia’s Sriwijaya Air recently launched a new route connecting Jakarta with Haikou, the capital Hainan province, which lies 218km from Sanya.

In addition to the Indonesian promotion, the Sanya Celebration events will be held in Thailand, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Russia, the UK, Germany, Singapore and India.

Regent Hotels Group, the Taipei-based hospitality company, has unveiled three new mixed hotel and residential projects as it ramps up its global expansion plans.

The company is actually a pioneer of mixed-use developments, having becoming one of the first high-end chains to operate a luxury hotel as part of a shopping mall when it opened the Regent Galleria at Regent Taipei in 1990. And the company is building on this heritage with the signing of agreements for properties in three more mixed-use developments, located in Vietnam, Montenegro and Indonesia.

In June, Regent penned an agreement for a new hotel on the island of Phu Quoc, which lies off Vietnam’s south coast. Regent Phu Quoc is expected to open in 2019 and comprises a luxury resort and residential units within a marina development.

That agreement was followed in July by the launch of the Regent Pool Club Residences at Regent Porto Montenegro. This will be the second phase of the Regent Porto Montenegro project, which also overlooks a yacht marina. All owners of the Regent Pool Club Residences will have access to the facilities and services of the Regent hotel.

Also scheduled to open in 2018 is the Regent Jakarta and Regent Residences Jakarta (pictured top), which will form part of the new Mangkuluhur City development in the centre of Indonesia’s capital city. As well as the hotel and residences, the development will feature shopping, dining and entertainment options.

“The mixed-use business model is our commitment to maximise owner return through innovative concepts and entrepreneurship. The development of a luxury hotel is a long-term investment; using the Regent brand as an anchor, we can deliver exceptional products and provide immediate capital return through residential sales,” said Steven Pan, chairman of Regents Hotels Group.

Regent currently operates 17 hotels, resorts and residences in six countries, as well as eight standalone restaurants. The company added that it is “continually seeking… growth opportunities that align the right partners with winning locations in gateway cities”.

Indonesia’s Batik Air has revealed plans to launch its first three routes to India.

The Bali Post reports that in the coming weeks, the airline will start flying from Medan to Chennai, Jakarta to Delhi and Bali to Mumbai. The Jakarta-Delhi route will mark the first direct link between the capital cities of Indonesia and India – two of the world’s most populous countries.

The CEO of Batik Air, Achmad Luthfi, was quoted saying that his airline has “received flights slots in India” and expects to launch the flights “sometime around July”.

“The economies of Indonesia and India continue to develop. What’s more, both countries have two of the world’s largest populations. India, for example, the total of the middle class and above residents exceeds 200 million people. Certainly, if they want to travel, they will travel abroad. The situation is not much different than China,” he added.

While details of the Medan-Chennai and Jakarta-Delhi routes were not revealed, the Bali-Mumbai route is expected to be operated twice a day.

Batik Air is a subsidiary of the fast-growing Lion Air Group.

Archipelago International, the Indonesian hotel group, has unveiled plans to open at least 12 more hotels across the country in 2017, as part of a multi-brand expansion plan.

The company will launch new properties under five of its brands this year, ranging from the “select service” Favehotel and Hotel Neo concepts to the residential-style Harper Hotels, upscale Aston and luxury Alana brands.

The new openings will also stretch all across the Indonesian archipelago, from the Batam in the west to Papua in the east, adding almost 1,900 rooms to the country’s supply.

“Our team continues to do a phenomenal job at both launching hotels at record breaking pace and ensuring their success year after year,” said Tenaiya Brookfield, Archipelago’s vice president of sales & marketing. “The hotels opening domestically this year are both strategically located and much needed. They will create hundreds of job opportunities as well as best in class accommodations for both business and leisure travellers in the area.”

Specifically, the 12 new openings expected in 2017 will include the 75-room Favehotel Sorong Papua Barat in West Papua, 105-room Hotel Neo Gajah Mada in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, 102-room Hotel Neo Kebayoran in Jakarta, 164-room Favehotel Bandara in Tangerang, close to Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, 105-room Favehotel Tuban and 247-room Favehotel Madiun, both in East Java, 155-room Favehotel Tasikmalaya in West Java, and 131-room Harper Cikarang, on the outskirts of Jakarta.

At the higher end of the market, Archipelago will also open the 247-room Aston Batam Hotel & Residence in the Riau Islands, 123-room Aston Banyuwangi Hotel in East Java, 160-room Aston Inn Pandanaran in Semarang, Central Java, and the 271-room Alana Ah Poong Sentul City, West Java.

These new properties will supplement Archipelago’s existing portfolio of more than 125 properties across Southeast Asia, the vast majority of which are located in Indonesia. And the company is expected to grow even further in the coming years; in total, Archipelago has more than 100 properties in the pipeline across its seven brands.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has started allowing Asian travel agents to join its membership and accreditation programme.

At an event in Jakarta yesterday, held in conjunction with the Singapore Tourism Bureau (STB), CLIA’s head of training & development, Peter Kollar, introduced the association and its membership benefits to more than 100 Indonesian and Malaysian travel agents.

He also provided industry updates and conducted a training session aimed at educating agents about the techniques of selling cruise holidays.

“We’re delighted to be introducing our training and accreditation programme to agents in Indonesia and other countries in Southeast Asia,” Kollar said. “Cruising has gained popularity rapidly in the Asian market and more and more cruise lines are deploying ships in this region. CLIA training is designed to assist agents to be equipped to meet the growing demand for cruise.”

CLIA’s cruise accreditation programme gives travel agents access to CLIA’s Learning Academy, which contains more than 50 training modules covering various aspects of the cruise industry.

Following the launch of the programme in Indonesia and Malaysia, CLIA will introduce it to Singaporean agents later this month.

Garuda Indonesia will increase its flights to Australia this summer, providing more connections to and from Jakarta and Bali.

In a joint press conference with Tourism Australia, the national carrier announced that it will increase its services between Jakarta and Australia from four to five flights per week, while its flights from Bali to Australia will rise from six to seven per week.

Currently, Garuda operates six routes Down Under, linking Jakarta and Bali with Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. The additional flights will operate from May to October 2017, and will be adjusted to suit the demand of each market.

“The enhancement of our services to Australia will offer our customers a wider choice of flight schedules and ultimately greater travel convenience to Australia. We also want to thank our customers for their trust in flying Garuda Indonesia, and to Tourism Australia for its continuous support for Garuda Indonesia through our partnership campaign. We hope this successful partnership between Tourism Australia and Garuda Indonesia will continue in the upcoming years,” said Garuda’s CEO, Arif Wibowo.

In 2016, Garuda achieved a 17% increase in passenger traffic on its Australian routes, compared to 2015.

“Indonesia is one of Australia’s fastest-growing markets for international visitors and is Australia’s 12th largest market for international visitor arrivals. Indonesia has the potential to be worth over AU$1 billion (US$760 million) in overnight visitation by 2020 and we hope that today’s announcement by Garuda Indonesia will help us achieve that,” said Australia’s Minister for Trade, Tourism & Investment, Steven Ciobo.

“On behalf of Tourism Australia, we look forward to the joint campaign promoting the increased services across the airlines’ key gateways of Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.”

Indonesia is hoping to capitalise on the resurgent Russian outbound market with the launch of direct flights between Jakarta and Moscow.

National carrier Garuda Indonesia has revealed that it is planning to launch a new non-stop route between the two capital cities this summer. The move was announced by Garuda’s CEO & president, Arif Wibowo, at a meeting with Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mikhail Yurievich Galuzyn and the Indonesian Ambassador to Russia, Wahid Supriyadi.

“We are trying to accelerate plans regarding the launch of direct flights to Moscow in August. We will fly three times a week using wide-body aircraft Airbus A330-200,” said Arif.

The launch of direct flights it expected to lead to an increase in Russian arrivals to Indonesia, which are projected at 100,000 visits in 2017. This follows double-digit growth in 2016.

Garuda is also planning to launch flights to the US in 2017, with services from Jakarta to Los Angeles via Tokyo also due to commence mid-year.

Ethiopian Airlines will add three more Asian destinations to its route map in the first half of 2017.

The national carrier will start flying to Singapore, Jakarta and Chengdu as part of a record-breaking phase of growth that will see it launch a total of seven new destinations in the first six months of the year.

Other additions include Norway’s capital Oslo and three more African destinations: Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), Antananarivo (Madagascar), Conakry (Guinea).

“Africa’s share of global aviation is currently the smallest at only around 3%. As the largest airline group in the continent, we are highly concerned by this low base of air connectivity and are therefore setting record expansion in progress,” said Ethiopian’s group CEO, Tewolde GebreMariam.

“Looking beyond the current economic slowdown, especially in the oil export dependent economies of Africa, we firmly believe that the continent will become the magnet for foreign direct investment, trade and tourism, which are the engines of air travel growth.”

These new announcements follow the addition of three new international destinations in 2016:  Moroni (Comoros), Windhoek (Namibia) and Newark (US). By the end of the June 2017, Ethiopian’s international network will have expanded to 98 destinations.

Approximately 70% of international visitors to Indonesia in 2017 are expected to travel to just two destinations: Bali and Jakarta.

The Indonesian government is targeting a total of 15 million arrivals this year, and Wisnu Bawa Tarunajaya, the country’s assistant deputy of tourism HR development, said that 40% of these visitors are expected to travel to Bali.

“Bali is still number one compared to the other regions in Indonesia,” he was quoted saying.

A further 30% are expected to visit Jakarta, and 20% are likely to travel to Batam, in the Riau Islands. The remaining 10%, accounting for just 1.5m visitors, will be shared between the rest of the country.

But Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism is taking steps to even the spread of visitors across the country; it has already earmarked 10 “new” tourism destinations for development, including Toba Lake in Sumatra, Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara, Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara, and Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi.

Indonesia could be set for a tourism boost from India following the launch of a new flight service linking Jakarta with Mumbai.

Garuda Indonesia commenced the new route on 12 December 2016, with flights initially operating via Bangkok. If these services are a success however, Garuda plans to serve the route non-stop.

“We will see how it goes in two or three months; if the results are good, we will make it direct flights,” Garuda’s president director, Arif Wibowo, was reported saying by local news site, Tempo.

The Jakarta-Bangkok-Mumbai route will run three times a week using a single-aisle Boeing 737 aircraft. Flights depart the Indonesian capital’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 1255 and arrive in Mumbai at 2030.

Despite being two of the world’s most populous countries, there are no direct scheduled flights between India and Indonesia.

Indonesia’s Archipelago International has opened its first Harper Hotel in Jakarta.

The new Harper MT Haryono is located in the Cawang area of the city, close to Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport and the main toll road to Bogor and Bandung.

It features a total of 131 rooms and suites, all with free Wi-Fi, plus an outdoor swimming pool, restaurant and bar, and extensive MICE facilities including four meeting rooms and a ballroom.

“Our Harper brand is the youngest in our portfolio, yet its success story is comparable to some of our strongest brands,” said John Flood, president & CEO of Archipelago. “Jakarta has established itself as a thriving destination for travellers, and we are excited to respond to this rising demand by opening our first Harper hotel in this bustling city.

“We are confident that the opening of the hotel will resonate strongly with the local Jakarta community and guests visiting from around the world,” he added.

The new hotel becomes the fifth Harper in Indonesia, following existing properties in Bali, Yogyakarta, Purwakarta and Makassar. And at least five more openings are being planned by the end of 2017, including a second location in Jakarta.

Atout France, the French tourism marketing body, is aiming to attract more visitors from Southeast Asia.

The organisation, which was formerly known as Maison de la France, is currently hosting a major four-city roadshow in the region, which will enable key French travel and tourism suppliers to meet with the Southeast Asian travel trade.

From 21-29 November 2016, the ‘Douce France’ event will see Atout France and 12 of its partners meet agents at events in Jakarta, Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

The companies showcasing their products that these events include Pont du Gard, ODT de Luberon, Disneyland Paris, MacArthur Glenn, MGTC, Club Med, Incom France, CRT PACA, Croisieurope, La Vallee Village, Air France-KLM and RailEurope.

France is already the most-visited country in the world, welcoming a total of 84.5 million international visitors in 2015 – almost triple the number that entered Thailand, Southeast Asia’s most-visited destination. Despite its popularity however, France still welcomes relatively few visitors from Southeast Asia. Just 600,000 travellers from the ASEAN region visited France last year – less than 1% of its total arrivals. Malaysia was the country’s top ASEAN source market, with approximately 150,000 arrivals, followed by Singapore and Thailand (both approx. 120,000).

Indonesia however, is seeing rapid growth (+50% in terms of visas issued since January 2016) and is expected to overtake its neighbours to become France’s largest ASEAN source market in 2017. It is also expected to become the second largest Asian market after China.

Several new activities and attractions are being planned for France in 2017. Those travelling to the country for retail therapy will be tempted by a new shopping and leisure outlet at Pont de Normandie, which will feature 100 stores when it opens next spring, and fashionistas will also be interested in the new Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Paris, which debuts in autumn 2017.

Disneyland Paris is launching a new nature-based complex close to Paris in spring, which will include a geothermal lagoon, gardens, an activity forest and “Enchanted Island”, and the main theme park will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year with a new night-time spectacular and a Star Wars attraction.

Foodies can also enjoy a series of culinary festivals in 2017, including Bocuse d’Or and the Patisserie World Championship in Lyon, as well as the opening of a new wine venue in the Rhone Valley.

And the year could end on a high for France; in September 2017 the country will know if it has been selected as the host city for the 2024 Olympic Games.

On 10 January 2017, the low-cost carrier will start operating thrice weekly flights between Johor Bahru and Jakarta. And then a week later on 17 January, AirAsia will resume its Kuala Lumpur-Solo service with three weekly flights.

Singapore Airlines has unveiled plans for a significant expansion of its operations in Indonesia, including the launch of direct flights between Jakarta and Sydney.

The new route, which is still subject to regulatory approvals, is expected to commence on 23 November 2016 and will be operated three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) using a Boeing 777 aircraft. Flights will continue onwards between Singapore and Jakarta.

And SIA is planning to further expand its Singapore-Jakarta operations with the addition of eight new weekly flights. Four of these (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays) will depart Singapore at 1350, with the return flight leaving Jakarta at 1535, while the other four (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays) will leave Singapore at 2015  and depart Jakarta at 2225.

Singapore-Jakarta is already the busiest route in SIA’s network, with 63 weekly return flights per week, or nine per day. With the additional services, SIA will operate 71 weekly flights on the route, and this rises to 74 weekly Jakarta flights when you include the three weekly flights to and from Sydney.

Sydney is also a major destination in SIA’s network, with 31 weekly flights to and from Singapore, plus the three from Jakarta.

“Indonesia and Australia are already among the most popular destinations in our route network. As a result of healthy demand, we are pleased to be able to offer even more travelling choices with these new Jakarta and Sydney flights,” said SIA’s senior vice president of marketing planning, Tan Kai Ping.

Flights on the new Jakarta-Sydney route will depart the Indonesian capital at 2225 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and arrive in Sydney at 0930 the next day. Return flights will leave the Australian city every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 1100 and arrive back in Jakarta at 1435. There will be a one-hour layover between the Singapore flights.

SIA will compete with Qantas and Garuda Indonesia on the Jakarta-Sydney sector.

Four Seasons has returned to Jakarta with the launch of a brand new all-suite hotel in the centre of the city.

Located on Jalan Gatot Subroto, as part of the new Capital Place development, the new Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta marks the company’s return to the Indonesian capital following an 18-month absence.

It replaces the former Four Seasons in Jakarta, which was located on Jalan HR Rasuna Said and has been closed since late 2014. Both the old and new properties are owned by the Rajawali Property Group.

“Jakarta is a very big, very busy city that simply never stops, and Four Seasons feeds on that energy, optimism and uniquely Indonesian friendliness and flair,” said the hotel’s general manager, Christian Poda, who leads of team of 250 staff. “We’ve created this beautiful new hotel with every possible luxury, and now we are thrilled to finally welcome our first guests and really bring it to life.”

The new hotel features 125 suites with sleeping and living areas separated by sliding doors. The hotel’s top accommodation options, the 19th floor presidential suite and ambassador suite, will be launched later this year.

F&B options include the Palm Court restaurant which extends to a garden terrace, the Nautilus Bar, a French patisserie, and the Dolcetto coffee shop which also serves sandwiches and salads. And this autumn, the hotel will launch its new Italian concept, Alto Restaurant & Bar, which will be positioned at the top of the hotel and features an outdoor terrace overlooking the city.

Other facilities include a spa with eight treatment rooms and a hammam, a 24-hour fitness centre and an outdoor pool on the fifth floor, while a beauty salon and barbershop will open later in the year.

And finally for the MICE market, Four Seasons Jakarta will offer more than 1,800m² of function space including a grand ballroom with its own pre-function area and garden terrace.

Four Seasons first arrived in Indonesia in 1993 with a resort at Bali’s Jimbaran Bay. A second Balinese resort later opened in the Ayung River valley, prior to the arrival of the original Four Seasons Jakarta.

The non-stop flights linking Seoul’s Incheon International Airport with the Indian capital will launch in December 2016. Delhi will become Korean Air’s second destination in India, following Mumbai.

In addition, the airline said it is considering launching its first flights it Iran, having recently received permission to operate four weekly services between Seoul and Tehran.

Other international routes will be cut, however. Following the end of the Olympic Games in Rio, Korean Air will suspend its three weekly flights to Sao Paolo. The airline said this suspension is due to “low demand following the economic downturn in Brazil”.

And Korean Air will also reduce the frequency of flights between Seoul and Jakarta from 10 to seven per week from September 2016.

The Asia Pacific hotel sector experienced rising rates and occupancy in January 2016.

According to the latest monthly data from STR Global, released on Thursday, the region’s occupancy climbed 3.5% to 66.1% last month, while average daily rate (ADR) edged up 0.4% to US$104.60. This pushed revenue per available room (revPAR) up 4.0% to US$69.15.

Strong performances were seen in Japan, where double-digit ADR growth (+10.3% to JPY14,084, or approx. US$126) drove a 10.5% increase in revPAR, to JPY10,442; and India, where occupancy growth (+4.7% to 66.1%) was the main contributor to a 5.1% revPAR increase, to INR4,082 (approx. US$59). India’s occupancy was the highest for any January in the country since 2008.

In Myanmar however, an 8.0% rise in ADR, to MMK203,850 (or approx. US$162), failed to offset an 11.9% drop in occupancy, which fell to just 49.9%. This caused revPAR to slide 4.8% to MMK101,719. STR Global noted that demand for hotel rooms in the country has now decreased for 17 consecutive months.

In terms of cities, Bangkok posted increases across all three performance metrics: occupancy (+4.5% to 80.6%), ADR (+3.1% to THB3,548, or approx. US$99) and revPAR (+7.8% to THB2,859), while in Ho Chi Minh City, rising ADR (+6.9% to VND2.70 million, or approx. US$120) offset falling occupancy to drive a 4.3% increase in revPAR, to VND1.93m. This was the highest revPAR on record for any January in HCMC.

Jakarta however, reported declining occupancy (-6.2% to 49.5%), ADR (-2.1% to IDR1.12m, or approx. US$83) and revPAR (-8.1% to IDR552,866).

The January results follow an almost flat year for the Asia Pacific hotel sector in 2015, when the region experienced a 0.1% increase in occupancy to 68.2%, a 0.5% dip in ADR to US$108.79, and a 0.4% decline in revPAR to US$74.25.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has continued the expansion of its new ‘Sheraton Grand’ concept in Asia Pacific, with the rebranding of three more hotels.

The new higher tier of Sheraton was introduced last year as part of the ‘Sheraton 2020’ initiative to revamp and expand the classic upscale brand. And now Starwood has revealed that the renamed Sheraton Grand Shanghai Pudong Hotel & Residences, Sheraton Grand Guangzhou Huadu Resort and Sheraton Grand Jakarta Gandaria City Hotel will all join the new portfolio.

According to Starwood, Sheraton Grand properties are differentiated from standard Sheratons by their “enticing destinations, distinguished designs, and excellence in service and guest experiences”.

“As we complete the first year of our bold new vision for Starwood’s most global brand, Sheraton 2020 initiatives are already underway to establish Sheraton as the hotel brand of choice everywhere,” said Vincent Ong, Starwood’s senior director of brand management for Asia Pacific.

“We are making tremendous progress in Asia Pacific, continuing to provide Sheraton guests with effortless travel experiences so they can experience more, from offering the new lobby bar menu… to leading the expansion of the brand’s new premier tier, Sheraton Grand.”

The latest three additions follow the launch of the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort Gold Coast, Sheraton Grand Hangzhou Wetland Park Resort, Sheraton Grand Xishuangbanna Hotel, Sheraton Grand Hangzhou Binjiang Hotel and Sheraton Grand Incheon Hotel in December 2015. Other Sheraton Grand properties are already operating in Bengaluru, Beijing, Bangkok, Taipei, Tokyo and Seoul.

And Starwood also revealed plans to open more than 20 properties in the Asia Pacific region by mid-2017, supporting the brand’s global goal of adding 150 new Sheraton hotels by 2020. This will include the brand’s first properties in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Myanmar.

Garuda Indonesia has revealed that it will start flying to London Heathrow Airport in March.

The national carrier currently operates three weekly flights to the UK capital’s Gatwick Airport, via Amsterdam, but effective 31 March 2016 it will switch to Heathrow and increase the frequency of the route to five flights per week.

The new service will mark the first non-stop connection between Indonesia and the UK, although the outbound flight from Jakarta will operate via Singapore.

“Making the move to Heathrow Airport has been an ambition of ours since joining SkyTeam in March 2014. Heathrow’s pivotal role in servicing the alliance’s 1,052 destinations makes it an ideal departure airport for our passengers. Flying non-stop direct to Jakarta means we will truly be the most efficient way to reach Indonesia from the UK,” said Jubi Prasetyo, Garuda’s general manager for the UK & Ireland.

Flights will operate every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday using a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Heathrow said the agreement with Garuda took six years to complete, and the airport still has a queue of 30 airlines waiting for slots.

Using the app, customers will be able to book meeting spaces at Archipelago hotels in Jakarta via their smartphone.

The service is available for small meetings with a maximum capacity of 25 guests. Spaces can be booked on an hourly basis for room rental only, with other facilities such as Wi-Fi, mineral water and projectors available at an extra cost.

Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group has signed a multiple-property deal in Indonesia, which will include the launch of Southeast Asia’s first ever Radisson Red hotels.

The agreement, penned with Saphir Group, will see the opening of four new Indonesian hotels under the Radisson and Radisson Red brands.

Radisson Bali Legian Camakila and Radisson Bali Tanjung Benoa are both scheduled to open by 1 January 2016, while the new-build Radisson Red Legian Camakila and Radisson Red Jakarta CBD will launch in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

“We are pleased to welcome on board a new partner in the key market of Indonesia, where strong growth opportunities are supported by the government’s pro-tourism measures. With this four-property deal, that includes three hotels in Bali, one of the country’s top tourist destinations, as well as one in the gateway city of Jakarta, we continue to reinforce our presence in Indonesia, a key market for us in Asia Pacific,” said Thorsten Kirschke, Carlson Rezidor’s president for Asia Pacific.

Radisson Red is Carlson Rezidor’s “upscale lifestyle” brand, which aims to provide guest-friendly services and a high level of technology. For developers and owners, these new-build hotels incorporate a “multi-functional approach” that reduces construction and operating costs.

The brand will make its Indonesian debut in 2018 with the opening of the Radisson Red Legian Camakila, 130-room beachfront hotel in Bali. Then a year later the 36-room Radisson Red Jakarta CBD will open its doors in the centre of the Indonesian capital. The property will feature a gallery for local art and F&B outlets including Ouibar and the 24-hour REDeli.

Prior to these openings, the 120-room Radisson Bali Legian Camakila and 190-room Radisson Bali Tanjung Benoa will both open in sea-facing locations, offering a selection of upscale resort amenities.

Carlson Rezidor now has a total of nine hotels under development in Indonesia, including the four newly-signed hotels plus the Radisson Blu Bali Uluwatu, Radisson Golf & Convention Center Batam, Radisson Jakarta Cengkareng, Radisson Medan and Park Inn by Radisson Lampung.

These form part of a total Asia Pacific pipeline of 90 hotels, which will almost double the company’s existing regional portfolio of 101 properties.

Indonesia’s state-owned airport operator, PT Angkasa Pura II, has unveiled plans to expand the capacity of six of its airports, including Jakarta’s main hub Soekarno-Hatta.

Under the widespread plan, which was reported by local news site tempo.co.id, Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru, Kuala Namu Airport in Medan, Supadio Airport in Pontianak, Minangkabau Airport in Ketapang and Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport in Palembang will all be expanded to handle in excess of 20 million passengers per year. The projects are all set for completion by 2025.

PT Angkasa Pura II’s president director Budi Karya Sumadi, told tempo.co.id that the projects were aimed at increasing direct air routes to, from and across the Indonesian archipelago, and reducing the pressure on Jakarta as a transit hub.

“Passengers will no longer have to go to Jakarta or other big cities to access international flights,” he was quoted saying on Friday.

And the company will also revamp Terminals 1 and 2 at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, boosting capacity to 18m and 19m passengers per year respectively.

Construction of a new Terminal 3 will commence in 2016 and will be able to handle a maximum of 25m passengers.

A new airport rail link is also being developed, and work is about to commence on a 12,300m² terminal at Soekarno-Hatta.

“Our additional services to Singapore and Jakarta are also good news for customers travelling to destinations across Asia, with the daily frequency between Perth and Singapore over the holidays confirming that our decision to return to this route was the right one,” added Thompson.

Tickets for the new seasonal services are now on sale.

Garuda Indonesia will launch new routes to France and Germany this year, it has been reported.

Indonesia’s Antara news agency quoted the airline’s finance director, IGN Askhara Dananiputra, as confirming the plans this week. The new routes, from Jakarta to Paris and Frankfurt, are expected to commence in the second and third quarters of 2015, after Garuda takes delivery of more long-range Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

The launch of two new destinations would double Garuda’s network in Europe; currently the airline flies direct to Amsterdam, and onwards from the Dutch city to London.

Garuda currently operates six B777s, all of which come fitted with 314 seats in three classes, making them the largest aircraft in Garuda’s fleet. A further four B777s still due to be delivered to the airline.

India’s Jet Airways has expanded its network in the Southeast Asia following the signing of new codeshare partnerships with two of the region’s national carriers, Garuda Indonesia and Vietnam Airlines.

Under the new arrangements, the Mumbai-based airline will be able to offer Indian passengers links to two popular Southeast Asian island destinations: Bali and Phu Quoc.

Jet will sell Garuda’s flights between Singapore and Bali. This adds to the airlines’ existing codeshare agreement on the Singapore-Jakarta route, meaning that Indian passengers on Jet’s services to Singapore’s Changi Airport now have the opportunity to connect to two Indonesian destinations.

In addition, Jet will now place its code on Vietnam Airlines’ flights between Singapore and Phu Quoc Island, which lies off the south coast of Vietnam. This marks an expansion of the existing codeshare partnership that includes Vietnam Airlines’ services between Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore and Hanoi.

“Indonesia & Vietnam are strategic trade and investment partners for India and also popular tourist destinations for Indian travellers,” said Raj Sivakumar, Jet’s chief commercial officer.

“The expanded codeshare cooperation with Garuda Indonesia and Vietnam Airlines further strengthens our position in Asia, allowing us to win new customers in the region and providing more options and easy connections to our existing guests.”

Jet Airways now has 21 codeshare partners across the globe.

More than 20 European hoteliers will visit Southeast Asia this week, to showcase their properties to travel agents booking group tours.

Organised by Kuoni Group Travel Experts, the trip will take place from 15-22 April 2015 and will allow hoteliers from 11 European countries to meet agents in Singapore and Jakarta and discuss how they can increase the number of group bookings from the ASEAN region.

The trip is being led by Marco Russi, Kuoni Group Travel Experts’ vice president for hotel sourcing & reservations.

“Southeast Asia presents enormous opportunity for the group travel industry with a mix of high volume mature source markets and faster-growing ones,” Russi said.

“Thanks to our close relationships with the travel trade throughout Asia, our itineraries feature first-rate access to the attractions and experiences that people want to see, coupled with the reassurance and security of native language tour guides, pre-planned meals and accommodation in hotels that are best able to meet their needs.”

During the week-long trip, Kuoni says hoteliers will learn more about the “size, value and particular needs of Southeast Asia’s group travel trade”. They will be introduced to key local travel agents and tour operators to showcase their properties in a series of one-to-one appointments.

“Decades ago, Kuoni helped establish the group travel industry from Asia to Europe. The huge number of group tours we support every year makes us an authority in helping hospitality providers learn more about the needs of Asian travellers. We have prepared an insight-packed week that will help Europe attract visitors from ASEAN’s growing nations in years to come, while helping educate Southeast Asia’s travel trade about the delights that await them in Europe,” Russi added.

Italy, France and Switzerland remain the leading destinations for group travellers from Singapore, although the Netherlands saw a 7% rise in the number of room nights booked last year, to overtake Germany into fourth place.

France is the most popular destination for Indonesian group travellers, followed by Italy and Switzerland.

In its annual TripIndex Room Service report, the online travel company compared the price of hotel room rates and incidentals in 48 destinations around the world.

The results revealed that Jakarta offers the best value in Asia, with an average room rate of approximately US$161 and a total trip cost of US$206, including a club sandwich, water, vodka, cola, peanuts and dry cleaning. Kuala Lumpur was second cheapest (room rate US$169, trip cost US$228) and Hanoi third (room rate US$164, trip cost US$239).

Tokyo (room rate US$437, trip cost US$527) and Hong Kong (room rate US$385, trip cost US$507) were the most expensive Asian destinations in the TripAdvisor report.

Globally, Bulgaria’s capital Sofia was found to be least expensive city both in terms of room rate (US$139) and total trip cost (US$183), while New York was the most expensive in both categories (room rate US$669, trip cost US$793).

It is notable that Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe accounted for nine of the 10 cheapest destinations, while Western Europe and North America accounted for eight of the 10 most expensive cities.

Qatar Airways has unveiled a series of measures designed to enhance its connectivity in the Far East.

This summer, the airline will increase the number of flights it operates to Indonesia, with the addition of more services to both Jakarta and Bali. And it will also add more codeshare services with two of its regional partners; Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines.

From 5 July 2015, Qatar Airways will offer three more weekly flights (Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays) to Jakarta, in addition to its existing 18 weekly flights. This means that Qatar Airways will offer a total of three daily flights to the Indonesian capital.

And then from 16 July, the airline will increase its Bali service to twice daily, with departures from Doha every day at 0225 and 0800.

Meanwhile, Qatar Airways has also confirmed that it will start codesharing on 24 of JAL’s domestic routes, allowing passengers from Doha the opportunity to connect to more parts of Japan. New destinations made available by the partnership include Kagoshima, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Oita, Hakodate and Asahikawa.

Qatar Airways currently operates direct services to Osaka and Tokyo’s two airports, Haneda and Narita.

And finally, following the launch of its codeshare agreement with Cathay Pacific last year, the two airlines will now expand the partnership to cover Qatar Airways’ routes from Doha to Muscat and Sao Paulo. This will enable passengers to fly between these two cities and Hong Kong, via Doha.

The two codeshare partnerships have been enabled by Qatar Airways’ membership of the oneworld alliance.

“Becoming a member of oneworld in October 2013 was a significant landmark in Qatar Airways relatively young history, enabling us to strengthen our competitive offering,” said Qatar Airways’ group CEO, Akbar Al Baker. “The joining of this alliance, and the addition of these new codeshares, enables our passengers to avail of additional travel options, with ease, across routes that encompass the entire globe.”

Qatar Airways joined oneworld in October 2013 and launched its first flights to Bali in summer 2014.

StayWell Hospitality Group is planning to launch multiple new hotels in China and Southeast Asia, as the company continues to grow from its Australian roots.

Speaking to Travel Daily last week, StayWell’s CEO, Simon Wan, revealed that his company is in advanced negotiations for new hotels in the key Southeast Asian gateway cities of Bangkok, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. He is also on the verge of signing a joint venture in China that would lead to several new StayWell-branded properties in the country.

“At this stage we’re negotiating a joint venture with a state-owned company,” said Wan. “[We would] manage their hotels in China, help attract foreign business to their hotels and identify future overseas projects.”

Initially, StayWell would manage “probably about half a dozen” of the Chinese company’s properties under its Park Regis or Leisure Inn brands. Wan added that the joint venture will only cover the management of hotels, and the two companies have “not discussed” mutual equity investments.

In terms of Southeast Asia, StayWell is looking to build upon the recent revamp of its Park Regis hotel in Singapore by expanding into more key regional cities.

“We are negotiating hotels in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Bangkok,” Wan revealed. In terms of the Bangkok property, Wan added that he hopes to enter into an MoU, following which StayWell would invest in a refurbishment of the hotel to bring it into line with Park Regis standards.

The KL and Jakarta properties will also operate under the Park Regis brand.

The launch of hotels in these key cities forms part of StayWell’s longer-term plan to “build a strong network in [Southeast Asia’s] mature countries.”

“That is our business principle;” Wan said, “to build a strong base in terms of resources, to secure gateway cities first, before branching out.”

And having established these solid foundations, Asia can expect to see more Park Regis and Leisure Inn hotels rise across the region in coming years.

The new Raffles Jakarta, which soft-opened on 16 March 2015, is linked directly to the new Ciputra Artpreneur Centre, and includes original works by Indonesian artist Hendra Gunawan. The hotel also employs an “art concierge” to provide insights into the artist’s life.

“Jakarta is the economic and cultural seat of one of Asia’s fastest growing economies and we are delighted to be part of this growth,” said Peter French, president of Raffles.

“The hotel is a combination of both Indonesian and global influences that gives it a unique sense of place. The interpretation and display of Hendra Gunawan’s artwork in this hotel is a truly special tribute to Indonesian art.”

The hotel features 173 rooms and suites, all with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city. Facilities at the property include Raffles’ signature Writer’s Bar, an Arts Café, a spa with six treatment rooms, swimming pools, a fitness centre, tennis courts and a 14th floor garden which it says is also “inspired” by Hendra Gunawan. Two more restaurants will open later this year.

For the MICE market, Raffles Jakarta offers several meeting spaces, including the 2,500m² Dian Ballroom.

The hotel’s opening brings Raffles’ global portfolio to 12 hotels and resorts, and it plans to expand further with new hotels in Jeddah, Sharm-el-Sheikh and Warsaw set to open over the next few years.

Indonesia needs to develop an “aviation masterplan” that addresses issues of safety and capacity, according to IATA.

Speaking at an event in Jakarta, IATA’s director-general & CEO, Tony Tyler, noted the significant growth being experienced by Indonesia’s aviation sector, and called on the country’s government to develop a new strategy for the industry “based on global standards”.

“Indonesia’s aviation potential is huge. By 2034 it is expected to be the sixth largest market for air travel. By then some 270 million passengers are expected to fly to, from and within the country. That’s three times the size of today’s market,” Tyler told delegates at the IATA Aviation Day in Indonesia’s capital.

“Indonesia needs an aviation masterplan based on global standards and developed in partnership by aviation stakeholders including the government. Such a plan should set a common vision for addressing top priorities such as safety, capacity and regulation. And of course it must be followed by real actions,” he added.

Tony Tyler
Tony Tyler

Tyler said that safety is “the biggest concern” for Indonesia’s aviation sector, with the country having experienced at least one hull loss every year since 2010 and the EU continuing to ban the majority of Indonesian carriers from its skies.

“Turning around a safety record is not easy. The best laid plans need to be followed-up with concrete actions. Where this has been done – in Latin America, China, and Nigeria for example – we have seen significant and sustainable improvements,” said Tyler.

On the issue of capacity, the director-general commended the Indonesian government for its plans to build another 62 airports over the next five years, and expand Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. It warned however, that Jakarta’s capacity shortage “is nowhere near being solved, even with the terminal upgrades”.

Finally, Tyler urged the Indonesian government to remove “counter-productive” regulations on airlines.

International visitor arrivals to Indonesia reached 9.44 million last year, up 7.2% compared to 2013.

According to the latest data from the country’s Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), reported by the Antara news agency, the full-year total was boosted by a strong December, when 915,300 people visited the country, up 19.7% from the same month in 2013.

Arrivals into Bali‘s Ngurah Rai International Airport increased 15.1% last year, but growth at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport was limited to just 0.3%, after some flights were moved to the capital’s second airport, Halim Perdanakusuma.

Arrivals at Lombok increased 73.1% year-on-year, following the completion of a new, expanded airport.

The BPS also reported a 5.6% decline in Indonesian hotel occupancy last year, to 50.1%, as a glut of new room supply entered the market.

ANA will launch a new range of in-flight services on its Southeast Asian routes next month, including the regional roll-out of its premium economy cabins.

The Japanese carrier will introduce premium economy seats on its services to Singapore, Bangkok and Jakarta, in a move it said was intended to target “the high volume of business travellers flying between these destinations”.

The new premium economy class features seats that are 19.3 inches (49cm) wide with a 38-inch (96.5cm) pitch. They also come equipped with power outlets, USB ports, personal reading lights, large in-flight entertainment screens, and a greater choice of F&B options.

The cabins will initially be rolled out on the Tokyo Narita-Singapore service on 29 March 2015, followed by Narita-Bangkok and Narita-Jakarta on 1 August.

The airline will also launch its first class cabin on the Narita-Singapore route from 29 March, while business class services on all three routes will be enhanced from 1 March. Offerings will include a new in-flight meal service designed by the culinary teams of Regent, Four Seasons and Anantara hotels.

As well as catering for passengers in Southeast Asian routes, the move forms part of ANA’s plans to drive more connecting traffic to its trans-Pacific services to North America.

“These service enhancements build on the changes to ANA’s summer flight schedule 2015, designed to meet the rising passenger demand for… international connecting demand between Asia and North America,” the airline said in a statement.

“When the summer flight schedule is active, passengers will be able to connect between Southeast Asian destinations and 10 cities in North America, using Narita Airport as a convenient transport hub,” it added.

Frasers Hospitality has opened its second property in Jakarta, marking the start of a major expansion in the city and across Indonesia.

The new Fraser Residence Menteng, located in the centre of the Indonesian capital, will be followed by six more properties in Jakarta over the next three years.

Nationwide, Frasers plans to have a portfolio of 10 Indonesian properties comprising more than 1,700 serviced apartment units operating by 2017. This will include several of the company’s brands, such as Fraser Residence, Fraser Suites, Fraser Place and Capri by Fraser.

“We are very bullish on Indonesia,” said Frasers’ CEO, Choe Peng Sum. “With its strong [GDP] growth… and arrivals growing at about 10% each year, the country offers great potential for our Fraser brands which target professionals, managers and executives travelling on medium-term work projects.

“Our first property, Fraser Residence Sudirman Jakarta, opened in 2011 and has enjoyed occupancy exceeding 90%. We believe the Fraser Residence blend of comfort and security makes it ideal for business travellers who want a private sanctuary in the heart of the city,” added Choe.

And kicking off this latest phase of expansion is the Fraser Residence Menteng, which offers 128 apartments, a fitness centre, spa, lap pool, games room and indoor children’s playroom, as well as a residents’ lounge and library. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.

The Indonesian growth plan forms part of Frasers’ broader strategy to almost double its global inventory to 30,000 units over the next five years.

Garuda Indonesia has added several new destinations to its codeshare agreement with Etihad Airways.

The Indonesian national carrier will now place its ‘GA’ code on Etihad’s flights to five new cities – Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, Bahrain and Brussels – bringing the total number of codeshare destinations to 10. In return, Abu Dhabi-based Etihad will place its ‘EY’ code is now on Garuda’s flights between Jakarta and Singapore, Bali, Manado, Surabaya, Balikpapan and Makassar, and between Abu Dhabi and Amsterdam.

The alliance will expand further from 21 June this year, when Garuda increases the frequency of its Jakarta-Abu Dhabi-Amsterdam service four to six flights weekly.

Also from this date, Etihad will re-time its flights between Jakarta and Abu Dhabi to offer improved connection times to several destinations, including Istanbul, Moscow, Johannesburg, New York, Chicago and Toronto.

“The partnership between Etihad Airways and Garuda Indonesia continues to develop in a mutually beneficial way, adding new destinations, improving connectivity, and offering new customer benefits,” said James Hogan, Etihad’s President & CEO. “Connection times to many popular destinations have been reduced to under three hours.”

Etihad’s relationship with Garuda will also help it expand in Australia, following the launch of the Indonesian carrier’s new Jakarta-Perth service this summer. And Hogan revealed that this would “pave the way for [Etihad] to enter the market in its own right within the next two to three years”.

Also included in this next phase of Australian expansion, Etihad has unveiled plans to increase capacity to Melbourne. The airline will upgrade its daily Abu Dhabi-Melbourne route to a new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft from 1 December 2013. The three-class, 328-seat aircraft will replace the current Airbus A340 operating the route, delivering 12% more weekly seats than at present

“Melbourne is one of the best-performing routes in our global network, and has the highest passenger load factor of our three Australian destinations,” said Hogan. “Victorians are not only flying with Etihad Airways to Abu Dhabi, an emerging business and leisure destination, but also on to destinations in the Gulf region, Middle East, Europe and Africa.”

Etihad currently operates 13 Boeing 777s and will add a further five this year.

Beijing Capital was Asia's busiest airport in 2012, handling 81 million passengers

Passenger traffic at airports in the Asia Pacific region continued to grow strongly in 2012, according to Airports Council International (ACI).

In its full-year report, released today (18 February 2013), ACI revealed that Asia Pacific airports handled a combined total of 1.07 billion passengers last year, 7.1% more than in 2011. The growth was driven by international passenger traffic, which increased 9.4% year-on-year to 431.8 million, while domestic passenger numbers climbed at a slower rate of 5.4%, to 637.6m.

“The positive results of 2012 confirmed the 2012 to 2031 forecast recently published by ACI that the Asia Pacific region will grow at a steady 6-7% increase in passenger traffic until 2031. The report also forecasted global passenger traffic to grow at 4.1% per annum over the next 20 years and Asia Pacific will become the largest aviation market in the world,” said Patti Chau, Regional Director of ACI Asia Pacific.

Beijing Capital International Airport was once again the busiest airport in the region in 2012, handling more than 81m passengers, with an average of 6.75m per month. Second busiest was Tokyo Haneda with 67m passengers, followed by Jakarta Soekharno-Hatta and Hong Kong International, both with around 57m passengers.

Asia Pacific’s major airports also provided some of the world’s fastest expansion, with Jakarta (+14.4%), Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (+10.6%), Singapore Changi (+10.0%) and Seoul Incheon (+11.3%) all seeing double-digit growth last year.

Despite this growth however, Asia Pacific still only provides three of the world’s 10 busiest airports. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport remains the busiest, followed by Beijing, London Heathrow, Chicago O’Hare and Tokyo Haneda. Jakarta is 10th, behind Los Angeles, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt and Dallas-Fort Worth. Hong Kong is 12th, Bangkok 14th and Singapore 16th.

Globally, the world’s airports handled almost 4.11bn passengers last year. Asia is currently the third largest global region, handling 26.1% of total airport traffic, behind Europe (29.9%, 1.23m) and North America (29.5%, 1.21bn).

Garuda Indonesia has announced it will operate direct flights between London Gatwick and Jakarta from later this year.

The national carrier will operate the flights from the fourth quarter of this year onboard a Boeing 777-300 ER.

The route has been supported by Prime Minister David Cameron after he signed a deal to double trade between the UK and Indonesia by 2015.

“We want to link Britain up with the world’s fastest growing economies. And good air links are vital to achieving that. This new route from London to Jakarta is good for British business and will help them to compete in the global race,” he said on the announcement.

Stewart Wingate, chief executive at Gatwick said the new route was part of its strategy to target and sign-up routes to the emerging economies, which has also included China, Russia, Turkey and Vietnam.

Garuda has also launched flights to Auckland and Brisbane and has a codeshare deal in place with Etihad Airways.
