Japan Tourism Reports Record High US Visitor Arrivals

eTurboNews:

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that American visitor arrivals to Japan increased by 3.6 percent year-to-date in 2023 over the same period (January-April) in 2019, a year that broke the record for international travel to Japan.

In the month of April 2023 alone, nearly 184,000 Americans visited Japan, an 8 percent increase over April 2019 – making the US the only Western nation (aside from its North American neighbor, Mexico, which saw a 13.1 percent increase in its visitor numbers to Japan over the same period) to experience a rise in tourism to Japan.

“We have seen an exponential increase in the interest in travel to Japan from the American market,” says Michiaki Yamada, Executive Director of the Japan National Tourism Organization in New York.

“Following the reopening of our country’s borders to international tourism in late 2022 and the lifting of all Covid-related entry restrictions this spring, the incredible pent-up demand to experience the wonders of Japan post-pandemic means that we will likely be welcoming more Americans than ever before in the months to come.”

Japan is one of the most talked about travel destinations of 2023 with the country as a whole, along with its top cities and regions, appearing on some of the most coveted “Where to Go” Lists of the year, including: the Japanese cities of Morioka and Fukuoka in the New York Times’ annual list of “52 Places to Go in 2023”; Kyoto and Nagoya featured on Time Magazine’s list of “The World’s Greatest Places of 2023”; The Washington Post named Japan on its list of “The Top Travel Destinations for 2023”; the “art islands” of Naoshima included in CNN Travel’s list of “Where to Travel in 2023: The Best Destinations to Visit”; Kyushu featured in Bloomberg Pursuits’ “Where to Go in 2023” list; Osaka named to The Daily Beast’s list of “Where to Travel in 2023”; Japan on the Reader’s Digest list of the “20 Best Places to Travel in 2023”; Japan included in the TripSavvy list of “Where to Go in 2023: The Most Exciting Destinations of the Year”; Tokyo featured on CNBC’s list of “The 7 Cities You Must Visit Before You Die”; and the list goes on.

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Delhi Office recently met with Aamir Khan at Le Meridien Hotel, New Delhi. The meeting facilitated an exchange of thoughts for future collaborations in the fields of Art and Cinema between India and Japan.

Aamir Khan is one of India’s most prominent and respected actor and director, with his films often breaking box office records and receiving critical acclaim both in India and internationally. “Yusuke Yamamoto, Executive Director, JNTO Delhi Office expressed special gratitude towards Mr. Aamir Khan for his enlightening words and remarked that his courtesy is reminiscent of the Japanese.”

Japan and India have a long history of art exchange, with Japanese audiences being particularly fond of Indian cinema. Indian films such as “3 Idiots” and “Dangal” have been hugely successful in Japan. Mr. Yusuke Yamamoto also mentioned, ‘Mr. Aamir Khan is known for his socially conscious roles and thoughtful approach to filmmaking, so it’s no surprise that he has garnered worldwide respect.’

As globalization continues to bring the world closer together, it is important that we continue to celebrate and learn from the rich diversity, and enable the smooth travel for Indians to Japan. Because exchange of ideas and techniques between the two countries could eventually come from the increasing exchange of people between the two nations.

JNTO KL shares information about castle-stays and temple-stays which have risen in popularity that allow international visitors to experience being lords, ladies, or even monks for a night.

Ozu Castle, located in Ehime Prefecture, was the first castle in Japan that allowed guests to stay in the castle tower. This majestic castle was reconstructed in 2004 using UNESCO-registered traditional techniques which were revived for the project, and its doors were opened to guests from around the world in 2020. Discerning guests will be able to experience the grandeur and atmosphere the way that Sadayasu Kato, the first lord of the domain, did so in the 1600s, and even experience dinner in the style of the 17th century lords. Both the castle and Garyu Sanso, a historic tea house complex, have been declared as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
Just off the coast of Kyushu Island, in Nagasaki Prefecture lies Hirado Castle, where the historic castle turret Kaiju Yagura is available as a private retreat for those looking to immerse themselves in the culture of Hirado. Kaiju Yagura was renovated in 2020 and its interiors feature a modern take on Japanese aesthetics with an emphasis on locally sourced natural materials. Hirado Castle can also arrange various unique cultural experiences, such as iaijutsu, a combative quick-draw sword technique practiced by samurai, private meals with a personal chef, and renting an elegant kimono for a tea ceremony at the local Zen temple.
For those looking to experience the spiritual side of Japan, temple-stays might be preferred. At one of Japan’s oldest and most important Buddhist temples, Zenkoji, Nagano Prefecture, guests can participate in activities including a ‘goma’ prayer (fire ceremony), ‘shakyo’ (brush meditation) or ‘zazen’ (seated meditation) along with attendance at the temple’s daily ‘O-Asaji’ (morning ceremony). It’s also well-known for shojin ryori (traditional Buddhist cuisine) which is seasonal and based on local fruits and vegetables. Nagano City is accessed from Tokyo Station in under 2 hours by the shinkansen.
Those who prefer private experiences may opt for the temple-stay at Miidera Temple, Shiga Prefecture. The temple has been welcoming everyone from emperors to worshippers for thousands of years, and its 400-year-old quarters are available as a private retreat which offers an immersive experience to connect visitors with Miidera and local culture.
In 2023, visitors can look forward to the opening of several unique accommodations, including Fukuyama Castle, Hiroshima Prefecture and Nakatsu Castle, Oita Prefecture.

Japan National Tourism Organization Kuala Lumpur Office (JNTO KL)  shares useful updates about Japan’s international airports, which are sure to delight Malaysians who are dreaming about traveling to Japan.

1) Tokyo’s Haneda Airport expands its leisure and business facilities with the new Haneda Airport Garden
Newly opened this 31 January is the Haneda Airport Garden in Tokyo, Japan. This complex consists of accommodation, retail spaces, bus terminal, spa and other facilities with a direct connection to Haneda Airport International Terminal. Two hotels, Villa Fontaine Premier Haneda Airport and Villa Fontaine Grand Haneda Airport with a total maximum capacity of 1717 rooms are available to meet the diverse needs of tourists and business travelers. On the top floor of the hotel is Izumi Tenku no Yu, a traditional Japanese onsen with natural hot spring waters, and views of both Mount Fuji and airplanes.

Haneda Airport Garden was designed with business in mind too, with MICE facilities, event halls and meeting rooms at the upcoming Belle Salle Haneda Airport. As for accessibility, the nearest station is Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station on the Keikyu Line and Tokyo Monorail, alongside various bus routes that will connect travelers to and from other areas of Japan.
Haneda Airport (HND), also known as Tokyo International Airport, is the closest airport to Tokyo..

2) Kansai International Airport has unveiled a new domestic area in Terminal 1
The first stage of the Kansai International Airport’s renovation works has been completed. Located in Osaka, Japan, this gateway for international travelers has undergone a facelift to improve passengers’ experiences, and add more functional commercial spaces including 12 new shops and restaurants showcasing the best of Kansai.

This addition is especially beneficial for international travelers transiting to domestic flights, making layovers and transits convenient and comfortable. This refurbishment is part of the first phase of the airport’s renovation, with further improvements expected to be completed around spring 2025 to greet visitors for the World Expo 2025.

For accommodation, OMO Kansai Airport by Hoshino Resorts is a perfect choice. Opening in March 2023 with a total of 700 rooms, this new hotel is directly connected by rail to Kansai International Airport and Shin-Osaka Station. The hotel offers not only the convenience of a smooth check-in/check-out and airport shuttle bus but also has facilities that will make travel more special such as a sky-themed restaurant and rooftop bar overlooking Osaka Bay.

Serving the western area of Japan, Kansai International Airport (KIX) is a popular gateway for many travelers to Japan. Discover more about this airport via JNTO here.

Spring has come and for Japan, it means streets will turn pink with Sakura.

Weathernews Inc. has revealed its forecast for the upcoming cherry blossom season. This year, the Yoshino cherry trees are expected to blossom slightly earlier than usual across Japan (based on the averages for the past 5 years from 2015 to 2019), and in some places, blossoms are expected to appear at the earliest dates on record.

Blossoming will begin on 16 March in Tokyo and Fukuoka, followed by Yokohama, Matsuyama, and Kochi on the next day. By the end of March, cherry trees will be blossoming in most areas of western and eastern Japan and will begin to blossom in southern Tohoku. The cherry blossom front will reach Hokkaido in late April, with Kushiro expected to be the last place to see blossoms, early in May.

There were concerns that a delay in the break of dormancy due to the warm winter would delay blossoming in western and eastern Japan, but it appears that frequent cold spells have resulted in the break of dormancy across a wide area, with the exception of southern Kyushu. With forecasts calling for higher than normal temperatures in March and April, the growth of cherry blossom buds will progress smoothly.

In northern Japan, the weather is expected to be changeable through the first half of March, with some days experiencing the effects of low atmospheric pressure and cold air, but the number of sunny days will increase during the latter half of the month. With forecasts calling for higher than normal temperatures in March and April, bud growth will progress smoothly. The earliest blossoms will appear on 30 March in Sendai and Fukushima, and the cherry blossom front will reach Hokkaido in late April. Blossoms are expected in Hakodate on 22 April and in Sapporo on 23 April.

Meanwhile, the major cherry blossom season festivals in Japan have been cancelled due to coronavirus. These festivals in Tokyo and Osaka, which attract millions of people wanting to see the white and pink flowers, will not go ahead as planned in April.

The cancellations come as authorities step up efforts to tackle the outbreak in Japan, which has reported more than 230 infections and five deaths.

However, locals and tourists can still enjoy the cherry blossom season along the public roads and in parks.

The Japanese city of Katsuura in Chiba prefecture is ready to go back to normal after quarantine for coronavirus was over and found that all 197 of Japanese evacuees from Wuhan, China were free of the virus and were ready to go back home.

A hotel in the city has become the centre of coronavirus in Japan after the Japanese government assigned it for “self-quarantine” for those who were evacuated from China. Japan has sent four flights so far to evacuate its citizens from Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak. The first group landed on 29 January.

The 206 people on board were asked to test for coronavirus then asked to “self-quarantine” for 14 days, which is the incubation period of the virus. Inside the hotel, evacuees were requested to stay in their rooms and avoid venturing in the corridors.

Support from residents

Despite their initial fears, residents of Katsuura offered enormous support to evacuees like receiving messages and origami cranes, which are usually made for those who are recovering from illness.

Locals also light up candles on the beach of the resort that can be viewed from the guests’ windows to encourage the evacuees. Some residents also arrived to send off the first batch of evacuees that headed home after their self-quarantine.

Around 36 people left the Katsuura hotel on Wednesday night, with more expected to make their way home on Thursday morning.

Those who arrived on later flights are still waiting out the rest of their quarantine period and are expected to undergo final testing before they are given the all-clear to go home.

Meanwhile, evacuees expressed support to those aboard the cruise ship denied entry in the port in Yokohoma due to the virus. Japan has the highest number of coronavirus outside China.

As the host of the 2019 Rugby World Cup this October, Japan has seen increased visitor numbers in recent years, with annual international arrivals soaring by almost 23 million since 2010.

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) collected the Wish List Destination award for Japan at the fifth annual National Geographic Traveller Reader Awards 2019.

Japan also takes ninth place on the world tourism earners, with an international tourism receipt GBP 32 billion in 2018. Tour operators have been reacting in kind by offering a raft of adventurous trips to lesser-known corners of the country, exploring destinations such as Kyushu and Setouchi in west Japan and Tohoku and Hokkaido in the north.

The award was collected by JNTO’s PR and communications manager, Matthew Joslin, who commented, “We anticipate that the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will encourage a whole new type of leisure visitor to come to Japan. It will also provide a great platform for us to showcase the very best of Japan and highlight the accessibility in terms of cheaper airfares, value for money rail passes”.

The Olympic Games will be taking place in Japan from 24 July to 9 August and the Paralympic Games from 25 August to 6 September as the country hosts the Games for a second time since 1964. An estimated 206 nations will be participating in the grand opening ceremony on 24 July 2020 in Tokyo. 33 sports will be participating in the games with five new sports being added to the list this year – baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing.

Tokyo 2020 Nippon Festival has been created to build energy around the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The festival welcomes people and cultures from around Japan and beyond to interact and celebrate the Games. Events will be organised to encourage diversity and regeneration in the Tohoku region following the 2011 tsunami, including Miyagi, Fukushima and Aomori, opening new gateways and introducing new possibilities for Japan.

With the Aman, Kyoto and new Hoshino Resort, Risonare, in Nasu having recently opened there are many more luxury hotel openings to follow ahead of the 2020 Games. Next year will see the debut of new accommodation opening across Japan such as; the Ace Hotel in Kyoto; Hyatt hotels in Yokohama, Niseko and Kanazawa; Hotel Fauchon in Kyoto; Marriot Hotel in Nara; and Ritz-Carlton properties in Nikko and Niseko 2020, and Fukuoka 2023.

The organisers of the World Travel Market (WTM) have revealed a sharp rise in interest from the Asia Pacific region.

According to Reed Travel Exhibitions, rising demand for exhibition space is being driven by mature markets including Japan, South Korea and Australia, as well as emerging destinations such as Kyrgyzstan, Taiwan, Mongolia and Vietnam.

The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) has expanded its exhibition stand space at WTM by more than a third for 2017, as it ramps up marketing activity ahead of the international the 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Olympics.

Meanwhile, the Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO) is taking 20% more space at this year’s event to publicise the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. This follows the installation of a virtual reality ski jump machine at the KTO stand at last year’s WTM.

And Tourism Australia has expanded its exhibition space by 17% year-on-year, as it continues to target key source markets such as the US, the UK and Asian countries.

Elsewhere, many emerging markets in Asia Pacific are taking larger stands. Kyrgyzstan has more than tripled its floor space, while the Taiwan Tourism Board has increased its stand by 42% this year to promote its marketing message: ‘The Heart of Asia’. The Mongolian Tourism Association’s stand will be 20% larger this year, and the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) is taking a stand that is 2.5 times bigger than last year, to take advantage of extra flight connections and a more relaxed visa regime.

“It’s remarkable to see how quickly exhibitors in the Asia Pacific region are increasing their stands at WTM London,” said Simon Press, senior director of WTM London. “It’s a reflection of the burgeoning growth in that part of the world and how the travel trade there recognises that WTM London is an unrivalled platform to both conduct business and boost awareness.

“Over the past couple of years, we’ve also seen an upsurge in the number of visitors who say they want to do business with, or find out more about Asia Pacific exhibitors – the number rose by 6% between 2015 and 2016, and we expect that growth rate to increase yet further this year,” he added.

Combined with rising demand from exhibitors, WTM is also seeing an increase in the number of visitors from the Asia Pacific region, with attendance figures rising from 8,800 in 2015 to 9,400 in 2016.

During the International Pow Wow (IPW), one the biggest travel trade events in the US, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) and the Embassy of Japan hosted a “Japan-US Tourism Seminar” at the ambassador’s residence in Washington DC.

Hosting the event was Kelley Ferro, the travel journalist and filmmaker who visited Tohoku as part of the JNTO’s Visit Japan Campaign in 2016.

The goal of the event, according to the JNTO, was to “announce that Tohuku… is now ready to actively receive tourists again”.

Local cuisine and saké from the region was also showcased during the event, as was the new luxury train, Shiki-Shima, which launched in Tohuku in May.

Japan and South Korea have devised four joint itineraries

The tourism boards of Japan and South Korea have teamed to create a series of new joint itineraries for Indian travellers.

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) and Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) have formed an exclusive partnership with Flight Shop, the Indian subsidiary of Flight Centre, to create combined holiday packages to the two countries.

This marks the first time the two tourism boards have joined forces in this way.

“As key long-haul destinations, Japan and South Korea have witnessed a robust growth of 30% in Indian outbound travellers,” said Shravan Gupta, executive director of leisure businesses for FCM Travel Solutions India. “The joint collaboration aims to double this growth over the next few years. As both destinations bet high on India, we will focus primarily on key and emerging metros.

“With a combined Japan and South Korea… itineraries are especially curated by travel experts at Flight Shop to suit every traveller’s need across segments,” he added.

Initially, four itineraries have been created. These include a 13-day “Best of South Korea & Japan” tour of Jeju, Busan, Seoul, Tokyo and Kyoto, the 14-day “Tokyo to Seoul” itinerary to Tokyo, Kawaguchiko, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, Okayama, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Busan, Daegu and Seoul, the 10-day “South Korea Delight with Japan” option, which takes in Jeju, Busan, Seoul and Tokyo, and finally the 10-day “Captivating Japan with South Korea” tour, comprising Tokyo, Kyoto and Seoul.

These packages come just in time as part of the new visa waiver programme which allows UAE Nationals to have visa free entry to Japan.

Ms. Akiko Yoshida, Executive Vice President of JNTO said: “Japan offers plethora of unique cultural experiences in a cosmopolitan setting. Unique not only to region, but also by seasons;  there is always something new to be discovered in Japan. The “Journey to Japan” packages are crafted in such a manner to make the best of Japan’s many offering.”

Curated to highlight the country’s unique heritage, modern pop culture, luxury experiences, tax free shopping and Japan’s traditional ‘washoku’ cuisine, “Journey to Japan” packages allow travellers to enjoy the nature and culture the country has to offer.

The Tokyo, Mt. Fuji and Kyoto route takes in Japan’s culture while also uncovering ancient culture in the city of Kyoto.

Included in the package are return flights from Dubai with Cathay Pacific, a one way Bullet Train ride from Tokyo to Kyoto, three-night accommodation with breakfast at each of Shinagawa Prince Hotels in Tokyo and Hotel Granvia Kyoto, Tokyo city tour, Mt. Fuji & Hakone tour, Kyoto city tours and airport transfers by English speaking drivers.

The price starts at AED 9,950 per person with twin / double sharing basis, and subject to seasonal surcharges.

These special packages will be available through local UAE travel agents and are valid until the end of December 2017.

In an effort to make Muslim and Middle Eastern guests as welcome and comfortable as possible, many hotel, hospitality and restaurant partners throughout Japan have made extensive efforts to learn the cultural and religious needs of Muslim guests, including making available various services and offerings that are Halal or Muslim-friendly.

Japan’s national tourism board has set up its first office in Malaysia.

The Japan National Tourism Organization’s (JNTO) latest overseas office launched in Kuala Lumpur this month, becoming its 17th global location.

This follows a record number of Malaysian visitors travelling to Japan in 2016, with the total of 394,200 arrivals marking a 29% increase compared to 2015. The JNTO noted that this growth is primarily being driven by a proliferation of low-cost air routes between Malaysia and Japan.

And to improve how Japan caters to Malaysian visitors, the JNTO has announced a series of measures, including new facilities for Muslim travellers such as halal restaurant listings and prayer rooms.

In addition, the JNTO will start participating in Malaysian trade fairs, such as the MATTA Fair Kuala Lumpur, MITM Penang and MATTA Johor, as well as conducting Japanese fam trips for Malaysian media and travel agents.

The launch of the KL office coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and Japan.

“I would like to offer my sincere thanks for the earnest support and cooperative effort to those who have contributed to the establishment [of the office]. Japan and Malaysia have a long history of friendship and strong ties. The mutual exchanges between our countries stretch out to the field of economy and culture,” said JNTO president, Ryoichi Matsuyama.

The JNTO’s KL office is located in Chulan Tower in the centre of the city.

The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) has formed a new partnership with ITB Asia, the region’s biggest travel trade show.

The new memorandum of cooperation between the JNTO’s Singapore office and ITB Asia’s organiser, Messe Berlin (Singapore), is aimed at enhancing Japan’s status as an international business and events destination.

Japan welcomed almost 20 million international arrivals in 2015 and is placing a major focus on its tourism industry as it aims to double its inbound visitor numbers by the time it hosts the Olympics in 2020.

“Tourism is a vital part of Japan’s growth strategy and our partnership with ITB Asia to attract international MICE travellers is one of the many efforts that further open our doors in achieving the government’s growth trajectory target of 40 million by 2020,” said Susan Ong, deputy director of the JNTO and Japan Convention Bureau (JCB) in Singapore. “Our myriad of destinations… make us an exceptional and attractive MICE destination to international businesses.”

According to the 2015 report by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Japan hosted 355 international meetings last year, ranking top in Asia and seventh in the World. The country will also host the 2019 World Rugby Cup before the Tokyo Olympics a year later.

“Japan is a prime MICE destination in the region. It’s a perfect combination of first-class infrastructure, range of unique destinations, excellent hospitality, world-class food, heightened safety and cleanliness which draws international appeal,” said Katrina Leung, executive director of Messe Berlin (Singapore).

“It gives us great pleasure to be in partnership with the Japan National Tourism Organisation of Singapore. ITB Asia will be the go-to platform that connects visitors and buyers, in effort to further drive Japan forward.”

Last year, ITB Asia attracted close to 760 exhibitors from 73 countries, as well as 880 buyers and more than 10,300 attendees over three days. This year’s edition will take place in Singapore from 19-21 October 2016, and the JNTO will have a booth at the show to provide delegates with information about the country and its tourism facilities.

Having almost reached its target of 20 million international visitors five years ahead of schedule, Japan has now doubled its 2020 tourism goal to 40m arrivals.

The Japan Times reports that the new target was set in a recent meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. As well as the ambitious aim of attracting 40m visitors by 2020, the government is also aiming to generate JPY8 trillion (US$71.6 billion) in spending by overseas visitors – more than double last year’s record total of JPY3.48trn.

“Tourism is an important pillar of our country’s growth strategy and a trump card for regional revitalisation. It is also an engine to boost growth to achieve the JPY600trn GDP goal,” Abe was quoted saying by the Japan Times. “To establish a tourism-based country, I’m determined to take any political measures in advance to be fully prepared.”

Driven by a weak yen and increased air lift, international arrivals to Japan surged 47.3% to 19.73m in 2015. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) had earlier set a target of reaching 20m visitors by 2020 – the year Tokyo hosts the Olympic Games.

Japan’s Tourism Minister, Keiichi Ishii, was reported saying that the targets are “highly feasible”, if certain policies are implemented. These include increased promotional efforts to attract visitors from Europe, the US and Australia, opening state guesthouses, revamping the visitor experience at the country’s national parks and enhancing major sightseeing spots.

“I believe we could successfully establish a new vision of tourism that matches the new era. I’m determined to make every effort to implement these plans,” Ishii said.

And the country is aiming for another tourism surge after the 2020 Olympics, with the target of 60m international visitor arrivals and JPY15trn in revenues by 2030.

Singapore and Japan have entered into a new partnership designed to drive two-way tourism between the countries.

In a ceremony held at the Japan Creative Centre in Singapore on Monday, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) and Singapore Tourism Board (STB) penned a “memorandum of cooperation” (MOC) that details a series of bilateral measures to increase tourism flows between Singapore and Japan.

The signing was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries – a milestone which is being labelled ‘SJ50’.

“Singapore is an important country to Japan for global tourism exchange,” said JNTO president, Ryoichi Matsuyama. “With the signing of the MOC today, we hope to establish a deeper mutual relationship… and promote stronger bonds and partnerships between both nations.”

The partnership will be launched with food fairs in both countries. More than 20 Singapore restaurants will take part in the Singapore Food Fair, which will be held in Japan from 1 February to 15 March 2016. And in Singapore, the Japanese Restaurant Week will run from 24 February to 8 March, featuring more than 80 Japanese restaurants.

A new tourism logo has also been designed to mark the partnership, which features popular cartoon characters Hello Kitty and Dori-tan. This will be used on all promotional materials related to the SJ50 tourism partnership.

Other SJ50 tie-ups include Raffles Singapore creating a new ‘Sakura Sling’ cocktail using sake, and the hosting of a major Japanese flower display at Changi Airport.

Lionel Yeo, chief executive of the STB, called the MOC signing an “important milestone in the strong relationship between Japan and Singapore”.

“Japan has been and continues to be an important source of visitors to Singapore, just as Singaporeans are also visiting Japan in ever-increasing numbers,” Yeo said. “With this MOC, we look forward to more collaborations and joint initiatives to continually build and grow tow-way tourism traffic for both our destinations.”

Japan is likely to welcome more than 19.5m visitors in 2015

Japan has experienced a surge in visitor arrivals this year, and could even reach its target of 20 million arrivals five years ahead of schedule.

The Japanese government previously set a target of welcoming 20m overseas visitors by 2020, but the Japan Tourism Agency revealed this week that numbers are approaching this level in 2015.

The Japan Times reported the agency’s commissioner, Akihiko Tamura, as telling a news conference that the country is almost certain to exceed 19.5m international arrivals this year, “unless any external factors arise”.

He made the remark after the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) revealed that Japan had welcomed 17.96m overseas visitors in the first 11 months of 2015, which marks a 47.5% jump compared to the same period last year. This is already significantly higher than the country’s record full-year total of 13.41m arrivals, which was set in 2014.

According to the JNTO, the weak Japanese yen and an increase in air lift have driven the surge in arrivals.
For the January-November 2015 period, Japan’s largest source market was mainland China, which accounted for 4.65m visitors – more than double the total in 2014. Arrivals from South Korea jumped 44% to 3.59m, while visitation from Taiwan was up 30% to 3.41m.

Other source markets showing strong growth included Hong Kong, Vietnam, the US and Australia, according to the JNTO. In November alone, Japan welcomed 1.65m arrivals, up 41% year-on-year.

On Monday, Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that the country’s next target would be 30m visitors, which could feasibly be achieved before the country hosts the Olympics in 2020.

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has signed a new partnership with VisitBritain, aimed at encouraging the exchange of tourism information and best practices between the two Olympic host nations.

Penned at the British Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo on Friday, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will focus on how the UK managed its tourism industry before, during and after the 2012 Olympics. Tokyo will host the Games in 2020.

The MoU was signed by Christopher Rodrigues, chairman of VisitBritain, and Ryoichi Matsuyama, president of the JNTO.

“2013 was a record year for British tourism and we didn’t experience a drop in Olympic year either. This agreement with our friends at JNTO will enable us to pass on invaluable knowledge and help deliver a lasting tourism legacy for Japanese tourism,” said Rodrigues.

To achieve this, VisitBritain will advise the JNTO on how to promote Japan to overseas visitors, drawing on its own first-hand information and experiences. The first project will be a Japan-UK tourism symposium, entitled ‘Growth Strategy for Tourism, Making the Best Use of the Olympic and Paralympic Games’, which will be held in London on 2 October 2014 at the Embassy of Japan.

“In 2013 Japan welcomed 10 million overseas visitors for the first time and we have started working towards 2020. We are delighted to sign this MoU with successful Olympics host VisitBritain, and value the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games as an opportunity to transform Japan into a more tourism-oriented country,” said Matsuyama.

The 10m arrivals achieved by Japan last year marked a new record for the country, and this year the country is embarking on an ambitious long-term plan to double its inbound tourism to 20 million overseas arrivals.

The travel trade has welcomed the decisions. Commenting on the French initiative, Thomas Cook India’s managing director, Madhavan Menon, said he expected the move would have an “impactful resonance in uptake” among Indian travellers.

“We applaud this highly impactful strategic move on the part of the French government,” said Menon. “For the rapidly evolving Indian traveller… France has always had that magical ‘brag-factor’ allure and this pro-tourism initiative will catapult France to top of India’s favourite destinations.”

Following the Japanese announcement, Ryoichi Matsuyama, president of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), said that he hoped that “more and more Indian people will take benefit of this facility to visit Japan”.

Japan achieved a record number of international arrivals in March 2014.

According to data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the country welcomed 1.05 million visitors last month, up 22.6% year-on-year and breaking the previous record set in July 2013.

The result boosted Japan’s first quarter tourism arrivals total to 2.87m, 27.5% more than in Q1 2013.

The growth was driven by arrivals from China and Taiwan. Visitor numbers from Mainland China (+87.2% to 478,200), Taiwan (+45.8% to 596,600) and Hong Kong (+30.9% to 192,600) all saw strong double-digit growth, as did Thailand (+64.0% to 132,600), which was boosted by Japan’s recent visa waiver scheme for Thai nationals.

Japan’s biggest visitor source market, South Korea, provided 679,100 arrivals in Q1 2014 – up 0.5% year-on-year, while the largest non-Asian source market was the US, which provided 192,700 visitors, up 11.7% year-on-year.

Japan welcomed a record 10.36m international arrivals in 2013.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has signed a new deal intended to boost tourism arrivals to Japan.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) will see SIA work on a range of joint marketing initiatives in the key source markets of Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.

These will include advertising and promotional campaigns and trade and media fam trips. The agreement is valued at SG$1 million (US$792,000).

“Since the opening of JNTO Singapore’s office in 2006, Singapore has registered a 40% hike in visitor arrivals to Japan,” revealed JNTO executive vice president, Takashi Kato.

“The numbers have shown significant improvement, along with the addition of flights to Haneda by Singapore Airlines in 2010. We are thankful for the consistent support Singapore Airlines has rendered to us, and we strongly believe that the MoU would bring about more Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia visitors to explore Japan.”

SIA started flying to Tokyo Narita in 1968, and has since expanded its operations to Osaka, Fukuoka, Nagoya and Tokyo Haneda. It now operates 56 weekly flights to Japan, and a third daily service to Haneda will commence in March 2014, expanding this total to 63 flights per week.

The devastating Tohoku earthquake and subsequent nuclear concerns severely impacted the number of visitors to Japan, which plunged 62.5% year-on-year to just 295,800 in April 2011. Despite a gradual recovery, the total number of international arrivals to Japan for 2011 was 6.22 million, down 27.8% from 2010 – the worst rate of decline on record.

In a statement, the JNTO said the results gave it “great pleasure”. “This result has only been possible through the tremendous support and cooperation that we have received from everyone around the world. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest gratitude for such heartwarming support,” the tourism board said.

Hotels have largely recovered, with average occupancy levels in Tokyo now back above 80%, while the aviation industry is also buoyant, with the launch of new low-cost carriers such as Peach and Jetstar Japan, back up by ANA’s continuing strength and a resurgent Japan Airlines (JAL). Earlier this year JAL revealed that it had recorded year-on-year growth in terms of international passenger traffic for the first time since the March 2011 disasters, carrying more than 600,000 passengers on international flights in February 2012.

“It is very encouraging to see demand returning to countries such as Japan,” UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai said earlier this month. “[Japan is] fully welcome back the millions of tourists that each year chose to visit.”

American and Japan Airlines (JAL), which operate a joint venture on trans-Pacific routes, will now offer two daily flights between JFK and Tokyo – one JAL flight to and from Tokyo’s Narita Airport, and the resumed American flight to and from Haneda. JAL will codeshare with American on the JFK-Haneda flight.

“We are delighted to again offer our customers these extremely convenient flights,” said Tim Ahern, American’s Vice President for International ex-New York. “Travel between these two great cities is a key ingredient in commerce and cultural exchange between the United States and Japan, and we are pleased to team up with our excellent partner JAL in providing customers two travel choices every day.”

Yuki Tanaka, Executive Director of the Japan National Tourism Organization’s (JNTO) New York Office, added; “Tourism from the United States to Japan is on the upswing, and American visitors will be delighted by the many new hotels and attractions Tokyo offers today. The resumption of American’s nonstop flight to Haneda from JFK should accelerate this positive trend, since the proximity of Haneda to downtown Tokyo will make it all the more inviting for Americans to visit this fascinating city and experience its many attractions, including the finest in culture, food, sports and entertainment.”

All flights on the JFK-Haneda route will be operated using a Boeing 777-200ER with 247 seats – 16 in first class, 37 in business class and 194 in economy.

Cathay Pacific, Kyoto and Hong Kong hosted a mega fam last week

Japan National Tourist Office (JNTO) is to focus its tourism promotion efforts on a ‘fusion’ brand between traditional and modern cultures, its president has revealed.

Speaking to members of the travel industry earlier this week in London, Ryoichi Matsuyama, president of JNTO said its ‘Cool Japan, Fusion of Tradition’ campaign would further push its current image, which is currently outdated.

“I think Japan has a nice brand image but this is dependent on the 1980s and since then we have adopted a softer side,” he explained. “Our government has presented a new image of ‘cool Japan’ to show one single message. At this moment the government is working out the image and a new theme that is more culture or ‘human being’ led and a fusion of traditional and modern”.

Matsuyama also outlined the country’s plans to improve tourist-friendly facilities, including more WiFi points (Japanese phones already include connection) and the ability for card systems to accept more UK credit cards. In addition, the country has also vowed to update its tourist information centres and set a nationwide standard.

When questioned on flight connections, Matsuyama said he is in talks to improve connectivity, although airlines in the room said a route would need to be profitable to operate.

“Availability is an important aspect and while low-cost carriers are increasing services [around Asia], for long-haul you rely on full service carriers. At this moment we are not in concrete discussions but will focus on this market again and provide more connections; I think there is a lot of opportunity,” he added.

Aside from its targeted market of middle class high-end consumers, JNTO is also keen to shift the perception that it is an expensive destination by promoting the youth sector in its campaigns, particularly and the educational market. It will put prices online for travellers to see how much items cost while in the destination and it is looking to replicate a schools programme that is already successful in the US.
