KAYAK has integrated ChatGPT into its Best Time to Travel tool, the AI-powered language model developed by OpenAI.

This addition to KAYAK’s Best Time to Travel tool, which allows travellers to easily compare prices with weather and seasonal information to determine the best time for their next trip, expands KAYAK’s travel recommendations by adding local cultural events and a suggestion of additional months to consider for flights.

With thousands of itineraries to choose from, Best Time to Travel greatly simplifies the search process and saves users a lot of time when planning their trip and helps them find the best time to visit their chosen destination for not only the best prices.

To determine the best time for the desired destination, KAYAK’s travel search engine uses data from billions of search queries to predict flight prices up to nine months in advance. The recommendation of the optimal month to travel takes into account the popularity of the destination, average temperature and average rainfall.

Now enriched with information from ChatGPT, the KAYAK tool expands its travel recommendations to include local cultural events and unique travel experiences. ChatGPT allows Best Time To Travel users to receive a second recommendation focused on events or festivals in the destination of their choice, whether it’s New Year’s Eve in New York’s Times Square or the traditional Loi Krathong festival in Thailand

This integration follows KAYAK’s ChatGPT plug-in that launched earlier this year. The integration offers people a virtual travel assistant to allow more conversational interactions with KAYAK’s search engine. By simply typing in natural language travel queries, like “Where can I fly to from London for under £300 in April”, users can now receive personalised recommendations based on their search criteria and KAYAK’s historical travel data.

Annie Wilson, KAYAK Chief Commercial Officer  commented: “Today’s travellers want to know as much as possible before they set off on their trip, so they can get the best experience that suits their budget. Thanks to our new “Best Time to Travel” service and the recent integration of ChatGPT, there’s no need to guess or rely solely on the opinions from friends or acquaintances when it comes to travel planning. We’re giving every traveller the power of data-driven travel information and recommendations so they can book every trip with confidence.”

Travel interest is increasing among Indians as the festive period of Diwali sets in over the coming months, according to new consumer research from KAYAK, the world’s leading travel search engine. The KAYAK consumer research of 1,200 Indians, found that Indians are eagerly poised to embark on journeys during this festive period, which commences from Navratris and Dussehra and lasts through Diwali and Bhai Dooj. At a time of the year when many travel back to their hometowns, KAYAK’s consumer research found 98% of Indians surveyed intend to travel within India during the festive period, with  3 out of 5 of those surveyed (60%) intending to travel internationally over the festive travel period.^

These insights align with KAYAK search data (based on Indian outbound searches between January and August 2023) for travel between October and November, with domestic flight searches increasing 29% compared to last year and searches for international flights increasing 14%.*

For those travelling within India, half (54%) of those surveyed plan to take two or more trips domestically.^ The top trending domestic destinations for flights on KAYAK over the festive period include Madurai (165% increase in searches year on year), Bhubaneswar (105%) and Ahmedabad (103%).  The top trending international destinations for flights include Colombo, Sri Lanka (340% increase), Hong Kong (162% increase), Seychelles (139% increase) and Tokyo, Japan (128% increase).*

Prioritising Travel – Costs and Budgeting for The Festive Travel Trip
When it comes to travel budgets, 72% of Indians are willing to spend similarly or more than last year while travelling this festive season.^ In fact, 4 out of 5 Indians are planning on reducing discretionary spending, like gadgets and OTT, to increase their travel budgets this season.

KAYAK search data over the Festive period has revealed the average cost of an international flight is ₹73,371 – increasing only 8% compared to last year while the average domestic flight is ₹15,487 increasing by 14%*.

Indians appear to be treating themselves with a 52% increase in premium economy searches compared to last year and a 33% increase in searches for 4 and 5 star hotels over the festive travel period.

Travel Through the Generations
India’s aspirational generation who make and break trends–Millennials–have shown the highest propensity to make international travel plans this festive season. About one-third of millennials (37%) plan on taking two or more trips internationally compared to only 16% of Baby Boomers.^

When it comes to travel companions,  while most Indians (4 in 5) plan to travel with family over the festive season – and that’s certainly the case for Baby Boomers (93%) – Gen Z travellers want to spend their holiday with friends (59%).

KAYAK has partnered with Mrunal Thakur, Indian film actor to promote how easy it is to book family travel or even solo travel in the upcoming festive season.

“Festive and Diwali traditions are so important to Indians. For me and my family, the festive season has always been synonymous with an epic holiday that represents those positive festive feelings, but with the excitement amped up even more. KAYAK is the ultimate travel buddy who helps me find great deals on flights, hotels and even car rentals. Now that Diwali is approaching, I’m excited about planning my next trip with KAYAK,” said actor and campaign ambassador, Mrunal Thakur.

Top Destinations for Indian Travellers Over the Festive Season
For those planning an international trip this festive season –  trips within Asia (excluding domestic flights within India) are trending, with searches showing a 133% increase compared to last year. Flights to South America and the South Pacific (i.e. Australia and New Zealand) have also shown notable search increases, with 95% and 16% increases, respectively.*

The most searched international destination for flights overall for festive travel is Dubai followed by Bangkok, Bali, and Singapore*. Further, Goa was the most searched domestic destination, followed by Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Srinagar.

Tarun Tahiliani, India Country Manager, KAYAK, said, “This festive season is shaping up to be quite exciting for Indian travellers, with a large majority of those surveyed ready to take that much-awaited trip, or going by the data, taking multiple trips! By providing comprehensive flights, hotel and car hire options, we, at KAYAK, are on a mission to help Indian travellers find the perfect holiday at a great price.”

Food & Travel: The Perfect Match for a Festive Holiday
So, what are Indians looking forward to the most on their Diwali holiday? Unsurprisingly, 72% of Indians look forward to food and culinary experiences as one of the most enjoyable activities while travelling along with shopping and exploring local markets and 45% felt food is worthy of the ‘five-star indulgence’ while selecting a hotel.

Apart from food, basking in their destination’s culture is also important to Indian travellers. Setting off on new expeditions during a festive season so deeply rooted in the country’s vibrant historical and mythological landscape, Gen X (72%) and Baby Boomers (75%) prefer locations with rich cultures, traditions and heritage while travelling, compared to Gen Z (64%). However, younger Indians – Gen Z (58%) and Millennials (56%) – prefer destinations with adventure and activities as compared to Baby Boomers (36%).

Sit Back & Celebrate – Letting AI Tool Support Your Travel
Technology will understandably play a significant role in the travel planning process, with about 60% of Gen Z and Millennial Indians saying that they will use AI to plan their holidays in the next two years as compared to Baby Boomers (49%).

Tarun Tahiliani, India Country Manager at KAYAK said, “Travel isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience, KAYAK’s personalized recommendations identify the best time to be there at a great price. Integrated with ChatGPT insights, our newly launched Best Time To Travel, on top of data analysis, uncovers key events at your chosen destination.”

Independence Day is around the corner, and fortuitously, Indian travellers will get a long weekend to enjoy a much-needed getaway. Flight search data from the world’s leading travel search engine KAYAK, reveals the top trending destinations for this period, as well as noteworthy flight search trends compared to last year.

For travel over the Independence Day long weekend, the current average return economy flight domestically is ₹11,584 a 4% decrease compared to last year, great news for Indian travellers. The average return international flight price is sitting at ₹77,431 on average an 11% increase compared to 2022*.

Tarun Tahiliani, India Country Manager at KAYAK, said, “Our data reveals that Indian travellers are keen to immerse themselves in new experiences in destinations like Madurai, Varanasi, and Bhubaneswar. Many Indians are also looking at overseas sojourns to Colombo, Auckland, Jeddah, and Toronto. Some of the top trending destinations, both domestic and international, have seen a considerable drop in prices, further enticing Indian travellers. The Independence Day long weekend is going to be action-packed for Indian holidaymakers, and KAYAK is all set to help them with useful tips and tools to help all those hoping to travel for the holiday at a great price!”

Interestingly, domestic travellers could be opting for spiritually enriching journeys, as the list of top trending destinations features offbeat locales more than popular tourist destinations. The culturally significant, ancient city of Madurai has also witnessed a 97% increase in flight searches even with a 22% price increase compared to last year*.

Apart from these, the top domestic destinations that saw the largest increase in flight searches as compared to the previous year include Bhubaneswar (90%), Thiruvananthapuram (71%), and Kochi (51%).* Given these trends, it appears that Indians are using this long weekend to experience the country’s diverse and alluring cultural offerings.

Colombo and Auckland have captured the top 2 spots on the list of top trending destinations as per flight searches, with a remarkable upswing of 5 times and 4 times respectively, as compared to 2022,.  This increase in traveller searches may be attributed to a drop in average flight prices compared to last year: Colombo in Sri Lanka has seen a 10% decrease in average flight prices since 2022, while the average flight price for Auckland in New Zealand has decreased by 16% in comparison to last year.

The summer travel season is here and despite price hikes, flight prices have increased by around 6% year over year for domestic travel and 10% for international travel the second half of the year according to KAYAK search data, people are continuing to prioritize travel with searches on KAYAK having increased around 47% for domestic travel and about 16% for international travel vs. last year.

To help travellers continue to navigate some of the increased pricing, KAYAK is launching a new “Best Time to Travel tool” as THE place to start your trip planning, uncovering optimal times of the year to fly and when to book by for a great price and trip experience.

With over 280,000 routes to choose from, KAYAK’s Best Time to Travel tool incorporates predictive data from KAYAK’s billions of travel queries to forecast future flight and hotel prices so travellers can easily compare pricing against weather and seasonality information to determine the best time to travel for their next trip. Let’s give it a whirl.

Step 1: Enter your destination – learn the best month to go
Plug in your home airport, final destination and choose from KAYAK’s most popular trip lengths (i.e. are you travelling for 4, 7 or 14 days). KAYAK will return the best month to visit based on a number of factors including price, crowds and weather. For example, March is the best month for Delhities (from New Delhi) to visit Toronto for a 7 day trip  (one of KAYAK’s most popular summer travel destinations) for low flight prices, good weather and fewer crowds.
Travellers can also view a breakdown of the average, minimum and maximum flight prices for every month of the year. Continuing with our theme, flight prices to Toronto are generally highest during the summer months (May through August) and cheapest during the low season months like March.

Step 2: Narrow down your travel dates
You’ve nailed down which month to go, now it’s time to figure out which days to fly for less. KAYAK’s calendar view provides a yearly overview of how flight prices change depending on the dates you choose. For a 7-day trip to Toronto, leaving on March 6  and returning on March 20 to March 26  will be your best bet.

Step 3: Time your booking window to maximize savings
Once you know where and when you’re going, it’s time to figure out when to book. And guess what? KAYAK’s new tool has you covered here too. Recommended dates from KAYAK will automatically populate and the tool will advise you on the best day to book both your flight and hotel before prices start to rise. For a 7-day trip to Toronto, KAYAK recommends booking your flight in October.

Not ready to book? No problem. Add a Price Alert so you know exactly when prices will rise and fall for the flight or hotel you want.

Tarun Tahiliani, Country Manager – KAYAK, said, “At KAYAK, every tech-backed tool is built to make travel simpler, cheaper and more efficient for users, be it our travel search engine that finds the great deals or the price alert that makes it easy to lock in the best price.

The Best Time To Travel tool is the next natural progression for us, since it addresses a key pain point – uncertainty while planning. Using our search data, including weather forecasts, price forecasts, projected crowds, and much more, we’re removing the guesswork for the travel planning process.

With our predictive analysis, travellers can rest assured that they’re choosing not just the best month to travel but also the most economical booking window. We’re using our data to give travellers the information they need to make decisive actions and ultimately simplify the planning process for everyone.”

Travel search engine KAYAK has launched a new travel hub created by and for LGBTQ+ travel lovers and their allies.

The new LGBTQ+ travel hub is an ever-growing resource of timely inspiration for those planning international and domestic getaways. It features in-depth information on destinations, events and stays that cater to the community – plus tips and guides to help travellers have fun and stay safe during their travels.

The website has been developed in close partnership with the KAYAK Pride ERG (employee resource group) team, an employee-led internal support group for LGBTQ+ members to feel accepted, educate work allies, and drive awareness of the LGBTQ+ experience. The hub will also spotlight first-hand travel stories and advice from influential voices in the wider community.

Jason Brillon, Communications Lead of KAYAK’s Pride ERG team comments: “While the world has continued to become a more accepting and welcoming space, the unfortunate reality is that members of the LGBTQ+ community like myself still need to take additional travel precautions in order to have a safe and enjoyable vacation. KAYAK’s new LGBTQ+ travel hub combines educational information and safety tips with must-see international events and destinations to create a much-needed one-stop shop for insight, information and inspiration.”

Sophie Gelsthorpe, Chief People Officer at KAYAK, adds: “As a global travel company, we take pride in our diverse workforce, and continuously seek out opportunities to enhance our product portfolio based on our own employee, and user experience. The LGBTQ+ travel hub is our latest testament to this, where we’re inviting diverse voices from inside KAYAK and beyond to share their first-hand travel stories and recommendations. By doing so, we aim to create an inclusive and welcoming space for travel lovers everywhere.”

Summer is almost here, and Indian travellers plan to make the most of it with flight searches significantly up for the holiday period. New research by KAYAK, the world’s leading travel search engine, based on a survey of 1217 Indians in urban regions across India, found that over half  (56%) intend to travel for leisure this summer^. This aligns with KAYAK search data that shows domestic flight searches have increased by about 208%, and long-haul international flight searches are also up by around 158%* for travel this summer compared to last year.

Nostalgia-led family trips gain momentum this Summer:

KAYAK’s search data shows an uptick in family and group travel for the summer season. Family flight searches are increasing by about 230% compared to 2022*, with 81% of those planning a trip this summer saying they’ll go with their families^.

One-third who are planning travel this summer are being influenced by nostalgia and are leaning towards destinations they have already visited in the past, including their ancestral places^. Interestingly, novelty is still important to them, with about half intending to make new memories in these previously-visited destinations while only 39% would relive past experiences^.

Commenting on the findings Tarun Tahiliani, India Country Manager, KAYAK said, “With the significant increase in flight and hotel searches, Indians are in for a summer of family travel, meaningful experiences and return to simpler times as we emerge from the pandemic. Nostalgia travel is a trend gaining momentum as people revisit special places or explore destinations evoking a sense of the past. ”

In terms of age groups, 25-34 year olds are the most interested in visiting nostalgic destinations that they might have visited during their childhood or teen years^, perhaps taking their own children to recreate these precious memories.

Prominent Indian psychologist and founder of Happiness is Love, Jyotika Bedi said, on the role of nostalgia in summer travel stated, “travelling is often about breaking away from routine and discovering unfamiliar things, but nostalgia offers a sense of comfort and security by reminding us of familiar people, places, and experiences from our past. Additionally, great memories can also inspire us to seek out new experiences that have the potential to become meaningful in the future.”

Increased spending appetite for summer travel:
According to the KAYAK consumer research, a significant majority (80%) of Indian summer holiday makers surveyed are planning to spend more or a similar amount on their summer travel this year as compared to last year^.

Increased flight prices do not seem to pose a hindrance for eager travellers in India with searches significantly up despite the price increase, which is about 42% for return economy domestic flights and about 19% for return economy international flights*.

The average cost of a return economy domestic flight during the summer travel season is INR 13,188, and about INR 93,482 for a return economy long-haul international flight*.

Tarun Tahiliani, India Country Manager at KAYAK said: “What’s great news for the Indian tourism sector is that according to our consumer research, 80% of Indian summer holiday makers are planning to spend more money or similar amounts on their summer travel this year as compared to last year.

This aligns with KAYAK search data which shows that Indian travellers seem willing to spend more to travel in style for long-haul flights, with business class searches up by 69% and first class searches by 109% compared to 2022*. There are some amazing deals to be grabbed this summer, with flexible search options and filters on KAYAK. Further, KAYAK allows travellers to identify more affordable travel dates and set price alerts for their preferred destinations, so they don’t miss out on great deals.”

Top Destinations for Indian travellers over the summer:

The most searched international destination for summer travel is Toronto followed by Dubai, London, and New York*. Within Asia, Indian travellers are looking at ever-popular destinations like Bali, Bangkok, Singapore, and the Maldives. Further, New Delhi was the most searched domestic destination, followed by Goa, Srinagar and Andaman and Nicobar Islands*.

Given the scorching heat across the country, a majority of respondents are planning to travel to places where they can cool off. Whilst 61% are gravitating towards the mountains, 51% want to bask in the breeze at seaside destinations^.

KAYAK flight search data shows the average planned duration of stay is about 35 days for long-haul  intercontinental travel, about 6 days for domestic travel, and roughly 8 days within Asia*.

Indians are a nation of curious travellers, as revealed by new consumer research by KAYAK with two-thirds (64%) of Indian travellers stating that they are willing to cut back on day-to-day expenses to allow them to see the world in 2023*.

The KAYAK research conducted by YouGov, surveyed over 1,900 Indian travellers, and found that travel restrictions resulting from the pandemic have contributed to the current surge in travel appetite, with three-quarters (78%) of respondents being excited to go back travelling in 2023*. Exploring the world (62%) was mentioned as the main reason for the regained Indian travel desire, followed by living their dreams (61%), seeking thrills (55%), finding themselves (48%) and escaping their worries (43%).

60% of those surveyed consider themselves curious travellers. Curiosity also makes for more enriching experiences, as 75% of respondents also quenched their curiosity by usually exploring new and offbeat destinations.  73% mentioned that they discovered new food experiences when travelling, and 70% met new people and made friends from different cultures during previous trips.

Elia San Martin, VP & GM of APAC at KAYAK, remarked, “Our deep dive into traveller curiosity led to exciting findings. Indian travellers are looking to not only spend more on holidays but are wholeheartedly embracing adventurous excursions, whether it is trying local cuisines, being immersed in new cultures, or exploring lesser-known locations. Our data shows that Indian travellers are highly curious about enriching their travel memories, and this is reflected by a 204% increase in flight searches for next year**. They are embracing the opportunity to travel the world again, while consciously searching for great deals and sustainable travel choices.

A multiracial family of a mother, father and their two little boys on a staycation in the city of Newcastle on a sunny winters day. They are wearing casual, winter clothing and accessories. They are walking down a city street and the father has one of the boys on his shoulders while the mother embraces their other son while they walk.

Costs and sustainability a key consideration for Indian travellers:
While almost half (49%) of those surveyed plan to spend more money or the same for their travels than pre-pandemic,  value for money supersedes all other factors, with over 60% of the surveyed Indian travellers counting it as their top consideration for booking flights and hotels, and 80% looking to spend INR 4 lakhs or less for travel in the year 2023.  This is followed by hygiene and flexibility in booking considerations.

Sustainability considerations are also important for Indian travellers’ holiday plans, with 43% of respondents stating that sustainability will be one of the main criteria for their summer holiday in 2023. Furthermore, 40% plan to travel to destinations known for their sustainability. Inspired to plan trips that have a minimal impact on the planet and its resources, 48% of Indian travellers surveyed will book eco-friendly accommodations while 44% will opt for more sustainable modes of transportation.

We believe in the power of travel and want our users to experience the world through travel, in a more sustainable and cost-effective way. Our unique travel planning tools can help travellers make fact-based decisions. For example, one tool we offer is the “Least CO2”-sorter, providing insights on a flight’s CO2 emission and helping to compare cost and travel times easily.” stated Elia San Martin, VP & GM of APAC at KAYAK.

Social media and the rise of solo travel
With travel topping the 2023 to-do lists for a majority of Indian travellers surveyed, 77% have noticed more people posting their holiday pictures on social media in the past 12 months. Interestingly, ‘me time’ is becoming a consideration for Indian travellers, with 38% saying they prefer to travel alone rather than in a group in 2023. Greater control, freedom, and flexibility in planning holiday itineraries could be major factors that drive solo trips.

2023 will be a big year for Indian travellers
This is suggested by search data from KAYAK.co.in, which has analysed flight searches for the 2023 travel period. The data shows flight searches from airports in India (between April – November 2022) have increased by about 204% compared to 2019 pre-pandemic levels. For International flights, searches have increased by about 168% and domestic flights searches have increased by about 257%**

Despite value for money being their number one consideration for their 2023 holidays, Indian travellers do not appear to be deterred by higher flight prices in 2023, which, compared to 2019, have increased by about 23% for international flights and by about 66% for domestic flights**. The average cost of a return economy domestic flight for 2023 is about INR 13,783, and about INR 85,631 for a return international economy flight**.

KAYAK.co.in search insights for 2023:

  • Hotel searches up: International hotel searches by Indian travellers have increased by about 82% compared to 2019, with domestic hotel searches increasing by about 54%.
  • Hotel prices up slightly: International prices for a one night in a double room in a 3-4 star hotel rooms have increased by about 20% on average compared to 2019 for Indian KAYAK users, and for domestic hotel rooms by about 24% on average.

KAYAK.co.in search insights for top destinations for Indian travellers of 2023
With more Indians searching for flights this year than pre-pandemic, international travel is back on the cards for many in 2023. Dubai remains the most searched outbound destination for travel in 2023, while Bangkok, Bali and Maldives also feature high on the list. Goa was the most searched domestic destination, followed by Andaman & Nicobar Islands and New Delhi.

KAYAK reveals the best travel and booking times for the top 10 most popular flight destinations of Indians. Dubai, Bangkok, Singapore, Bali and the Maldives are India’s most searched-for destinations for return economy international flights, for travel over the next 6 months. With inflation rising and higher food and fuel prices impacting Indian consumers, saving money doesn’t mean having to give up travelling. It is a great opportunity to analyse the most cost-efficient travel and booking times for the upcoming vacation season.

KAYAK, the world’s leading search engine, has shared insights on when Indians can travel at great prices to their top 10 favourite travel destinations for flights and on which days they can be advised to book and start their trip.

Saving money here, flying there: looking forward to exploring overseas destinations on a budget Colourful markets, beaches and great shopping could be what Indian travellers are looking forward to over the next six months, with the most searched destination for return economy international flights for travel between 31 October 2022 and 30 April 2023 (searches between 10.04.2022 and 10.10.2022) being Dubai, with Bangkok ranked second in the international travel ranking, followed by Bali and Singapore*. Domestically, Goa placed first as the most searched destination for return economy flights followed by New Delhi and Andamans Nicobar Islands.

Those who have not yet booked their trip and are planning a trip to Bangkok should consider travelling mid-March (13 – 19 March 2023), as they could save about 33% compared to flying during the New Year period. According to KAYAK search insights, it is most affordable to start the trip on any Wednesday* during the travel period.

KAYAK search insights suggest that early March represents a great time to travel with great deals available for international flights. Avoiding the peak travel dates such as around New Year’s Eve can allow Indian travellers to secure the best possible fare price, and we recommend setting up price alerts for your chosen destination to help secure a great price for your holiday.”

KAYAK travel tips
Use a travel search engine: KAYAK has the tools and filters to help you find great deals, including the Explore page, which shows destinations by price. Before planning your journey, check the latest travel restrictions in your destination. KAYAK’s travel restrictions map provides real-time updates on COVID-19 restrictions and entry requirements of individual countries.

Set a price alert: As one of KAYAK’s most popular features, price alerts help travellers save money by alerting them when prices change for a flight or hotel they want. If a flight you’re eyeing drops in price, KAYAK will alert you so they can lock in that new price, instantly saving you both time and money.

Get flexible: If you can be, choose ‘flexible’ filters. If your travel dates aren’t set in stone, and you have a little wiggle room available, chances are you can save some cash booking within +/- 3 days of your desired date range.

Booking Holidays, owner of hotel booking platform Booking.com, has been given the greenlight to buy eTraveli Group. ETraveli owns several online travel agencies including MyTrip, GoToGate, FlightNetwork and SuperSaver.

The Competition and Mergers Authority launched an investigation into the €1.6bn (approx. USD 1.57bn) acquisition in August amid fears it would reduce competition in the UK market.

However, the CMA recently said it had cleared the deal. The full text of its decision will be published in due course. Booking already owns several OTAs, including Kayak and Agoda, along with Rentalcars.com, Priceline and OpenTable, and last year it also bought Getaroom for USD1.2bn.

Revealing travel trends for Indian tourists this festive season, Kayak stated that Dubai, Bangkok and London are the most popular international cities to visit. The festive season travel period (between 1 September to 30 November) of 2022 has become one of the most eagerly awaited in recent years. After an easing of COVID travel restrictions, tourism activity is picking up again, as travellers desire for new destinations and new experiences increases once again.

“There are great deals to be grabbed this festive season, try using flexible search options and filters on KAYAK to identify the most affordable dates, and set price alerts for your preferred destinations,” said Tarun Tahiliani, India Country Manager, KAYAK. This is suggested by search data from KAYAK.co.in, the travel search engine, which has analysed flight searches for the 2022 festive season travel period.

The data shows fight searches from airports in India have increased by about 118% compared to pre-pandemic levels. International flight searches have increased by about 143% and domestic flight searches have increased by about 91%*. Indian travellers do not appear to be deterred by higher flight prices either, which compared to 2019 have increased by about 38% for international flights and by about 39% for domestic flights*.

The average cost of a return economy domestic flight during the festive period is about INR 8,585, (USD 107.41) and about INR 56,332 (USD 704.70) for a return international economy flight. “The stars are aligned for Indians to take that much-awaited trip as restrictions worldwide are eased or removed entirely, just in time for the country’s festive period to set in.

It appears that Indian travellers are making up for lost time and are more willing to travel than before the pandemic, according to the number of searches carried out on KAYAK.co.in. In addition to flight interest surpassing pre-pandemic levels, we have also seen searches for hotels surpass that of 2019.

As more people embrace flexible working environments and set their sights on their 2022 ‘workation’ (AKA, a vacation that blends leisure and remote working), KAYAK reveals the best countries in the world to work remotely from, with Portugal topping the list.

KAYAK’s first Work from Wherever Index is the ultimate source for those looking to set up a new office away from home temporarily or for a longer period of time. To develop the index, KAYAK closely analysed 111 countries and ranked each against 22 factors across six categories: travel costs and accessibility; local prices; health & safety; remote working capabilities; social life; and weather. Ultimately, revealing the best countries that are easiest to work from while having a lot of fun in your off-hours.

Without further ado, the top 10 best countries for combining productive working conditions and opportunities for travel adventures according to KAYAK are:

  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Romania
  • Mauritius
  • Japan
  • Malta
  • Costa Rica
  • Panama
  • Czech Republic
  • Germany

Portugal was ranked the all-round best country to work remotely from worldwide, scoring high across the board in all categories, including great weather, high abundance of places for going out, low-crime rates, and relatively low cost of living. Portugal also offers a digital nomad visa, and many locals have a high English proficiency that attracts expats.

Spain came in second place, largely due to its high quantity of restaurants and cafes per capita, paired with fast internet speed, plenty of co-working spaces and remote visas for freelancers. It also has a buzzing nightlife and is very LGBTQ+ friendly. Romania rounds up the top third place, primarily because it offers very attractive prices when it comes to long-term apartment rentals and local food.

In addition to the Work from Wherever Index, KAYAK features a new time zone ranking to help users quickly and easily find out the time differences for their trip – ideal for those looking to swerve 2am conference calls whilst working abroad. The time zone-focused rankings take key factors and categories from the Work from Wherever Index into account but displays them according to your work country of origin – so the countries that have time zones closest to your own work time zone will be featured higher up on the list of country destinations. The tool also provides information on the latest travel restrictions and local vaccination rates per country.

“At KAYAK we’re embracing the opportunity for people to work from almost anywhere in the world, and we expect it to be a rising trend amongst travellers in 2022 and beyond. That’s why we wanted to create a tool that helps travellers easily find destinations that cater to this new hybrid way of working, identifying the countries that offer great working conditions while also boasting with amazing things to see and do in your down time,” comments Laure Bornet, GM, KAYAK EMEA.

As travel restrictions relax, KAYAK has seen searches and prices increase for many destinations this Autumn/Winter 2021.

Analysing UK search trends between October and December 2021, KAYAK data indicates that many UK travellers are holding out hope for a sunny escape this Autumn/Winter, with Dubai and Alicante, Spain both ranking in the top 10 list of most searched for destinations. However, it seems city escapes are the most popular choice for Brits this season, with popular cities such as Paris, Amsterdam and New York making up six of the top 10 most sought after destinations.

And despite the restrictions lifted on many EU destinations in October and the US in November, UK cities Edinburgh and London rank in the top 10 destinations. It would appear that these domestic city breaks are seeing prices increase at a greater rate than some international destinations, with average flight prices for both Edinburgh and London increasing by over 15% since last month.

One could also expect many families will be reunited with loved ones this Autumn/Winter, with KAYAK data revealing significant spikes in searches for countries recently removed from the UK’s red list, with Islamabad, Pakistan being the most searched for destination currently, and Lahore following in third place.

Top 10 most searched Autumn/Winter destination cities*

Destination Average flight prices Price up/down MoM
  1. Islamabad, Pakistan

2.            Dubai, UAE £430 -8%
3.            Lahore, Pakistan £544 +11%
4.            Istanbul, Turkey £214 +11%

As road warriors dust off their carry-ons and companies strive to keep costs low, KAYAK is officially launching its free corporate travel solution, KAYAK for Business, with new features.

KAYAK started beta testing its corporate travel tool in November 2019, shortly before the pandemic took hold. Following a soft launch in February 2021, KAYAK for Business is now available in 60 locales and 28 languages with over 3,000 companies signed up in the last 3 months. New features include expense integration, price prediction, discounted corporate rates and more.

“When travel came to nearly a full stop in 2020, it gave us an unexpected runway to think about the future of business travel,” said Hafner. “Business travelers and their employers in a post-COVID world will demand even more flexibility, competitive prices and easy ways to blend business and leisure travel.”

KAYAK for Business is free, fast and easy. With over 2,000 sites to book from, it empowers employees to book from anywhere. For companies, it provides big cost savings versus other corporate travel platforms, gets everyone in the company under one platform and offers a quick and efficient approval process for travel and expenses. For travellers, it makes searching for (and expensing) business trips more convenient and personalized.

Similar to the KAYAK UX, KAYAK for Business brings the leisure travel experience to the outdated interface of the corporate travel world, with added features like automated expenses, the ability to book from anywhere while keeping your loyalty points, and the ability to easily share trip details with colleagues and family.

It will not be all about business

According to our recent consumer survey, one in five British business travellers want a job where they can travel for work and 20% would like to go on at least one business trip by year-end.

Brits also ranked visiting a new place (16%), having me-time (13%) and doing leisurely activities (13%) among the top factors they look forward to when traveling for work. From employee generated city guides to hotel recommendations from colleagues who have previously stayed there, KAYAK for Business’ social tools make the decision process on where to stay and what to do in a new city easier than ever.

Further, a quarter (25%) of British business travellers say they like to add a couple personal days to the beginning or end of a business trip to round out their travels, indicating “bleisure” travel is on the rise.

“Companies that support blending business with leisure travel will have a competitive advantage with talent. Many people want a change of scenery right now,” added Hafner.

As business travel ramps up in the UK this autumn, companies will be more price sensitive than ever before. Not only does KAYAK for Business offer great savings through select discounted rates but it also uses billions of search queries and AI to help guide employees on the cheapest time to book a flight for their next work trip.

As the world begins to re-open for international travel, KAYAK, the world’s leading search engine, has analysed the impact that Covid-19 has had on people’s travel habits. Findings show that 69% of people said the pandemic has made them re-evaluate the types of holidays they now wish to go on.

After over a year of cancelled plans and constantly changing travel restrictions, KAYAK’s survey found people in the UK have missed out on average of two planned holidays since the initial lockdown, and it appears many are looking to make up for lost time when travel opens up, with 23% planning longer trips away and 21% looking to splurge more on luxury travel.

Furthermore, 43% say that missing out on holidays has made them want to go on holidays they’ve been dreaming about, with almost one in five (19%) no longer waiting to check off a bucket list destination for their post-pandemic trip.

As searches for travel takes flight, KAYAK has released the Rediscover Travel hub designed to help you navigate where to go and what’s open for your long-awaited time away. The hub includes destinations seeing emerging signs of interest, where to fly for a deal and prices on hotel stays and rental cars.

Knowing the stress of picking the right destination after over a year of little to no travel, the hub also features a new interactive quiz that pairs you with destinations based on factors like how many vacation days you have left and which trip you were most bummed to cancel in 2020.

The desire to rediscover travel is consistent with KAYAK’s own search data. While flight searches in the UK have yet to hit pre-pandemic levels of 2019, they appear to be on the rise – increasing by about 59% since the beginning of 2021. While domestic travel searches have remained popular (up about seven times higher than January), international travel also appears to be trending, with searches up about 43% since the start of the year.

When it comes to the destinations travellers are dreaming about outside of the UK the most, the top ten destinations reported in the survey are:

  1. Greece/ Greek Islands
  2. Italy
  3. Cyprus
  4. Barbados
  5. Maldives
  6. Portugal
  7. Turkey
  8. Hawaii
  9. France
  10. Egypt

Brits are flocking to sunnier climes

Data from KAYAK reveals there may be less love in the UK this year as hundreds of thousands of holiday romances simply didn’t happen due to travel restrictions and disrupted holiday plans.

Annually, over 20% of travellers report having a holiday dalliance according to data for 2018 to 2020 showing romances are a big part of many holidays. With fewer people travelling in 2020, sadly those romances that would normally have blossomed will never come to fruition this year, with a potential 11.7 million people missing out on love whilst on holiday this year.

The research data from KAYAK, reveals between 2018 and 2020, an average of 1 in 5 (22%) Britons reported having had a holiday romance. The 2019 data showed that 27% of people aged between 18-22 found love on holiday.

The data, collated between 2018 and 2020 by KAYAK, suggests that many Britons find love abroad, and it’s not just contained to those who travel for leisure. The 2020 research revealed that 51% of business travellers surveyed were likely to have a fling whilst away from home.

Evan Day, UK Country Manager, KAYAK, comments, “In years gone by, holidays have been the opportunity to experience new cultures, meet new people and in some cases strike up a romance. Whether a short-lived fling or a long-term relationship, the reduction in travel in 2020 will no doubt have had an impact on the number of relationships that usually blossom whilst away from home. Our research from the past three years suggests that as many as 22% of potential holiday makers might have missed out on love this year! We’re looking forward to helping holiday-makers plan their next adventure as and when it’s safe to do so.”

In the past week, several COVID-19 vaccine candidates have achieved major breakthroughs and have shone a glimmer of hope in the flailing travel industry.

American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech announced on November 9 that their vaccine had proven 90% effective in preventing Covid-19 infections in ongoing Phase 3 trials involving more than 40,000 people.

Meanwhile, Australian COVID-19 vaccine candidate has produced an antibody response in early tests and Chinese COVID-19 vaccine to enter late-stage trial in Uzbekistan.

The news brought a positive effect to the travel industry as people have resumed their travel planning for the upcoming holidays. Airline and cruise companies share prices got an immediate boost, and tour operators saw an uptick in searches and bookings for 2021.

In the days after the news of a potentially effective COVID vaccine (November 9 to November 11), travel search site, KAYAK.co.uk saw a 76% increase in international travel searches for Christmas when compared to same days one week prior (November 2 to November 4). This is testament to the strong desire many of us share to get back out travelling again as soon as possible.

“News of the vaccine appears to have boosted travellers’ confidence in planning a trip – it’s a testament to the pent up demand and how much travellers are looking forward to travelling once it’s widely considered safe to do so,” says Per Christiansen, VP EMEA Marketing for KAYAK.

Bookings are expected to increase once cure has been found. Finally, vacations seem to be within reach.

In a year like no other, travel search engine, KAYAK, revealed new survey data that shows the huge backlog in untaken annual leave days, with half of the UK’s workers still to use more than 50% of their remaining annual holiday allowance. As the country goes back into lockdown, and as strict travel restrictions come into force, Britons are even less likely to use up their holiday allowance which is estimated to equal 270 million untaken holiday days nationally for the holiday year.

Currently, 40% of Brits believe that there isn’t any point using their holiday allowance as they can’t travel anywhere (40%) and due to the ongoing ‘uncertainty around travel restrictions’ (30%).  However, more than 1 in 10 people believe they don’t actually need a holiday as they’ve been working from home.

In the survey of 2,000 British adults, office politics was listed by many as a barrier to taking holidays, with 20% workers believing taking time off would be frowned upon by their colleagues as teams would be left short of people. This was the greatest concern for 18-25 year olds with nearly 30% of them choosing to rack up untaken holidays rather than leaving their team in the lurch.

A kind-hearted minority (15%) are sacrificing their time off to allow colleagues to get a break. Kindest of all are the millennials (18-25 year olds) with almost 1 in 4 stepping back to let their older colleagues have the time off, rather than taking it themselves. Ever the hardworking nation, more than 1 in 10 British workers are choosing to forego holiday to remain at work, as they wish to be around to see through big projects in December. However, 16% of workers have stated that they would like to have a mega-break at the end of the year, hoping to take the whole month of December off to use up their holiday.  A similar amount of people are happy to work until the end of the year but would like to have all of January off to recharge their batteries.

Evan Day, commercial manager for EMEA at KAYAK said: “Missed holidays have racked up throughout the year and now British workers are sitting on holiday allowances that they simply may not be able to take before the end of their holiday year. Extending the Christmas break, by finishing early in December, or having more time off in January, seems like a great way to use up holiday and recharge batteries.”

In a year of disrupted holiday plans, travel search engine KAYAK, has revealed British holidaymakers are turning to domestic travel to help secure a much-needed getaway this October, as domestic car hire sees a surge in searches.

As the summer holiday period drew to a close, travellers explored domestic alternatives when looking to plan October breaks. The latest KAYAK data reveals that domestic car hire searches for the final two weeks of October are up 18.2% year on year, with the Scottish cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness all appearing in the top 5 list of hire locations.

When looking at the most searched hotel destinations within the UK for the October break period, the nation’s continued love of a seaside holiday was clear to see, with St Ives, Blackpool, Whitby and Weymouth all appearing in the top five hotel searches of the key October travel period.

Most searched domestic hotel destinations in the UK for autumn half term are St Ives, Blackpool, London, Whitby, Weymouth, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Windermere and York.

KAYAK’s flight search trends revealed that the travel industry is slowly recovering with people starting to search for flights.

“We’re making our search data available to inform and reassure the travel community,” said Steve Hafner, CEO of KAYAK. “Our industry has a long road ahead to recovery but I’m encouraged by the positive signs in our search results that we are starting to see”.

The dashboard is designed to offer information on global flight search trends (a daily look at how COVID-19 impacted flight searches globally relative to the same day last year), domestic versus international search trends and search trends by destination city (including a spotlight on the five cities seeing the biggest spikes and declines in searches).  The data will be updated daily through at least the end of the year.

Some of the interesting things revealed by KAYAK’s search data are:

The big drop – Flight searches in the United States, France, United Kingdom, and Germany reached their lowest point between 6-8 April. Flight searches started trending upwards in May. In Latin America, flight searches are continuing to trend downward.

Travellers avoid metropolitan cities – As cities tend to be the epicentres of the infection in most countries, travellers tend to stray away from cities and search towns like Honolulu, Miami and San Juan. In Europe cities like Milan, Venice, Nice and Ibiza are seeing the biggest drops, replaced by searches for towns in Portugal and Greece.

Domestic travel rebounds first – As travel restrictions are still in place in most countries, travellers search for domestic destinations.

News of reopening motivates travellers – News about reopening of tourism and resumption of travel bring hope to travellers.

Europeans may encounter very few American tourists – US searches to Europe are down 70% YoY this summer.

With travel plans on hold and social distancing in full force, would-be adventurers and travellers across the globe can only dream of their next getaway. To help keep the dream alive, KAYAK is launching its virtual travel hub featuring a selection of curated city guides so globetrotters can #TravelFromHome.

Whether eager explorers need a 10-minute escape from #WFH life or to view a screen that isn’t hosting another conference call, KAYAK’s series of curated virtual city guides will provide some light relief to those suffering from cabin fever and offer a chance to be submerged in new surroundings.

Kicking off with curated virtual guides to Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin and London, the virtual travel hub is now live. Additional destinations will be released in the coming weeks – so keep an eye out!

For a respite from the four same walls, a chance to plan the next trip or an opportunity to learn something new, KAYAK’s curated virtual city guides will not only take people around the world from the comfort of their own home but will help teach avid travellers everything they need to know once they’ve (eventually) touched down.

Beyond access to a virtual tour of the destinations, users will also be able to experience a curated selection of:

  • Local recipes for lunch, dinner and cocktails
  • A playlist to get in the mood for each city
  • A language lesson covering commonly used phrases
  • A virtual tour from local museums and galleries
  • A list of books, TV series and movies related to that city

For example, those paying a virtual visit to Amsterdam will find a preview of the Rijksmuseum, an immersive look at the city’s scenic views with a helicopter tour and a step by step guide on recreating the Netherland’s well-loved Stroopwafels. Virtual visitors can also learn how to order a beer, ask for directions and greet new people in Dutch, as well as finding out more on all the recent cultural updates, from relevant books to read and films to watch.

Giving users all the tools and information they need to plan their next trip, from daily itineraries to destination highlights and fun facts to downloadable colouring books, KAYAK aims to revive the imagination of travellers’ and help those dreaming of their next holiday make it a reality when the time comes.

Evan Day, country manager UK, for KAYAK comments: “At KAYAK, we understand that these unprecedented times can bring a lot of emotions to the fore, from uncertainty and anxiety, to boredom and restlessness. Having a level of escapism and something to look forward to, are now more important than ever.  The virtual travel hub aims to give users a fun, exciting distraction, whether you’re wanting to learn something new, ‘visit’ your favourite destination or get a preview to a location you plan on visiting.”

Travel search engine Kayak has launched its Travel Hacker guide, detailing the top 10 destinations to travel solo, wallet-friendly trips and the best under-the-radar locations for adventurous explorers to visit.

As solo travelling continues to boom around the globe, 52% of the UK holidaymakers declare they have been on a lone trip before, with 22% preferring to go away solo than in a big group. The travel search engine reveals that Barcelona tops the list for the best destination to visit on your own.

The historic city boasts beautiful beaches, great food and is an ideal sporting hub for football fans, so there’s something for everyone. Not forgetting the amazing art installations and exhibitions, including over 20 Gaudi attractions for travellers to explore with Casa Milla’s iconic chimneys being a must-see.

European locations make up the majority of the top 10 list, featuring Rome, Budapest and Lisbon, due to their easy accessibility from the UK, rich history and scenic surroundings. If lone wolves are looking for something a little more relaxed, Budapest and Kuta are the ultimate hotspots. New research unveils what Brits like best about going away on their own, with not having to compromise on what they want to do topping the list (51%), followed by helping them becoming more independent (48%) and it boosting their confidence (40%).

Evan Day, country manager in UK of Kayak said: “The trend of going on trips or travelling alone seems to be getting more and more popular, so we hope our Travel Hacker Guide provides people with useful information they might need to plan their trip, as well as sharing tips and tricks for whilst they are away.”

This week in the travel tech sector, DiDi will launch electric vehicles in Mexico this year. Meanwhile, EaseMyTrip makes flight booking easier via Whatsapp and Kayak makes trip planning easier via TripBuilder.

DiDi introduces first EV fleet in Mexico

Didi Chuxing will launch Latin America’s first shared electric vehicle (EV) fleet through its app in Mexico, as the company further invests in sustainable transportation innovations in the region.

In 2020, DiDi Mexico plans to roll out a number of new initiatives on smart and sustainable urban mobility. As the first new energy initiative for ride-hailing in Latin America, DiDi will introduce a fleet of electric and hybrid vehicles to its platform in Mexico. In phase one of the initiative, over 700 units of EV/HVs from major international OEMs, including BYD and Renault, will be available on the app through cooperation with local leasing partners and drivers. 200 EVs are exclusive for DiDi drivers.

DiDi already operates the world’s largest EV fleet, with nearly one million EVs available on its platform in China, accounting for over 40% of all EV miles driven in the country.

“We are inspired and humbled by what we have learned in Mexico, which is one of the world’s most complex and exciting transportation hubs,” said Martin Mao, General Manager for DiDi Mexico. “We will continue to invest in building a fair and sustainable ecosystem for new transportation together with all our users, driver-partners and community stakeholders.”

Book your flights on Whatsapp

EaseMyTrip has announced integration on WhatsApp messenger to book flight tickets. The integration will allow customers to book flight tickets at competitive rates for their desired destination through WhatsApp itself.

This association with WhatsApp is significant for EaseMyTrip to further develop its market in India in online air ticket bookings. For activating the autonomous interactive program, customers need to send a message on Whatsapp on 9990330330.

The collaboration is expected to bring about convenience to the customers in a variety of ways, such as:

  • They don’t even have to visit any website/app to book flight tickets; they just have to send a message on WhatsApp.
  • They will keep receiving price drop/increase alert on their WhatsApp related to the flight they searched.
  • EaseMyTrip bot will also provide users with suggestive dates when they can get relatively lower prices for the flight-route they enquire for.

KAYAK launches ‘Trip Builder’ feature

KAYAK is testing its new ‘Trip Builder’ product feature that makes planning your next series of trips even easier. The helpful tool designed for anyone travelling to more than one destination will calculate the cheapest routes between multiple cities for the biggest savings. As the first and only metasearch to support this product globally, KAYAK is giving travellers more options to design a trip that best fits their needs and their budget.

The initial launch is powered by Kiwi.com, the online search engine that combines flights and ground transportation options. The new tool takes the pain out of planning multi-city journeys by finding the cheapest route possible. For example, now travellers considering a trip from the UK to New York, with stops in Dublin and Paris can easily view the most cost-effective way to get from one city to the next, in one simple search.

To book your next multi-city trip using ‘Trip Builder’ on KAYAK, travellers can take the following steps:

  • Head to www.kayak.co.uk and switch the dropdown menu from ‘Return’ to ‘Trip Builder’.
  • Browse other popular multi-city trips or start creating your own.
  • Choose the starting point, what places you want to visit and for how long you want to stay in each of those places.
  • From there, KAYAK will do the work for you and calculate the cheapest route.

Imagine “KAYAK on steroids,” that is how KAYAK CEO Steve Hafner described the company’s latest product – KAYAK for Business.

KAYAK for Business has all the power of KAYAK, with features and perks designed for business travellers. And free to use, of course.

With KAYAK for Business, users can expect access to great fares and planning tools including streamlined approval processes, easy ways to see what is in/out of your corporate travel policy, and robust reporting and tracking. And, unlike other corporate travel solutions that will not bundle customer service for travellers, to keep costs even lower. We will add ways for travellers to opt-in for concierge-level or partner-specific customer service when they need it.

The travel industry has been waiting for one travel agency that will be a one-stop-shop for every product and service in travel. KAYAK already has an extensive base of users – around 120 million people use KAYAK a month. Will corporate travel managers use the familiar interface to do their bookings?

The company argued that since KAYAK for Business is a free-to-use service, it will be especially beneficial for small companies that do not yet have a corporate travel system in place.

KAYAK for Business will be competing against the likes of Concur and Lola.com. As of 1 November, the company accepted an early access waitlist for businesses in North America. Companies can request integration ahead of the official product launch later this month.

How different are the holidays we went on in 2019 compared to those we took ten years ago? It’s a fascinating question and one that online travel platform Kayak has embraced with gusto with the publication of new research today.

On the face of it, not much may seem to have changed from holidays in 2009 – but, more than three quarters of British holidaymakers (76%) say how they travel has changed in at least one way in the past decade.

“Significant shifts in trends”

The key change is how we book. The research found that 4 in 10 Brits (40%) have moved to booking their holidays online in the past decade (who did not do so before). As a result, nearly half of Brits (47%) say they have not visited a travel agent in this time.

Second is research. Thanks to online review sites and websites such as KAYAK offering ever more inspirational and practical content, 30% of Brits say they do more research for their holidays than they did a decade ago. This is likely linked to the increase in booking online – previously we relied on the experts to share destination information, but now we are booking ourselves and being our own travel agents.

“In the last ten years, almost half of British travellers have moved online”

Which brings us to the third biggest change in holiday habits – booking elements of the holiday separately, something 21% do today which they didn’t a decade ago. With travellers booking and researching their own holidays, they now have the freedom to book all the individual elements that either suit them best or offer the best price – in many cases going away with one airline and returning with another. No longer are travellers restricted by the options of package holidays.

British travellers are getting more practical and prepared as well – for example, one in five (19%) now change their holiday money before they go away to get better rates, while a similar amount (18%) say they now get travel insurance for each holiday, something they didn’t do ten years ago. The full top ten list is:

  • Book online (40%)
  • Do more research (30%)
  • Book elements of the holiday separately (21%)
  • Try more local food (21%)
  • Change money before I go (19%)
  • Get travel insurance (18%)
  • Spend on credit card (16%)
  • Use social media to find where to go (14%)
  • Go on holiday with friends (11%)
  • Stay at several different places on one holiday (10%)

Sophie Gough, senior director, EMEA, Kayak, comments: “KAYAK was founded 15 years ago and whilst it may not seem as if loads has changed in that time, the research is showing some significant shifts in trends during this period. The biggest change is one that KAYAK is on the crest of – helping travellers find the right destination, information and prices online for their trip. In the last ten years, almost half of British travellers have moved online. With this shift, we also see travellers booking each component of their trip separately and doing far more research on a destination with all the information they have available to them.”

“Whilst in the past, some travellers may have preferred the reassurance of booking through a resource such as a travel agent, most people find that once they put themselves in control, they actually feel more reassured and can travel with even more confidence than before.”

KAYAK travel agents

New research has revealed that nearly half of British respondents (47%) have not visited a travel agent in the past ten years. In fact, 20% of adults say they have never been inside a travel agent branch. Amongst under 35s, the figure rises to a third (33%) and increases to a huge 70% for under 25s. The average Brit last visited a travel agent 6.5 years ago.

The decline can largely be put down to the increase in those now booking holidays online. Nearly three quarters (73%) say they booked their last holiday online, 4% of which booked it on their phone, rising to 7% for under 35s.

The study, conducted by travel search engine KAYAK.co.uk, was carried out amongst 1,007 adults in the UK, between 10-14 January 2019.

“A huge shift to online”

John-Lee Saez, managing director for KAYAK Europe, commented: “There has been a huge shift to online in recent years when it comes to booking travel and travel agents are realising this and increasingly investing in their online offering.”

Why are they booking online?

KAYAK booking online

Booking online is simply just ‘easier’ for half of the respondents (50%). A third (31%) say you can find everything a travel agent has online, whilst nearly a quarter (22%) say it is because travel agents are more expensive.

Just 18% of Brits have been into a travel agent in the past year – either to book or to simply get advice. Amongst those who use travel agents, 38% said they do so as they like to talk to someone in person, whilst a quarter (25%) say they feel more ‘reassured’ if someone else books it for them.

However, 15% admitted they just liked the experience and 13% went as far as to say they simply like the attention they get from those who work there.

“Prices are key”

Saez concluded: “In the online space, prices are key and the online market is very driven by this. Therefore, travel agents that want to compete will need to have a big eye on the prices they offer, as travel search engines such as KAYAK are increasingly putting the power into the consumer’s hands, showing them the best prices from the whole online travel marketplace with one search.”

This week, we saw several companies inked agreements to make it easier for travellers to avail a service. Chinese tech giant Ctrip signed two partnerships with Amadeus and Millenium Hotels and Resorts to provide seamless services to Chinese travellers. Here are the travel tech stories this week:

KAYAK X Value Alliance

KAYAK partnered with Value Alliance to provide more seamless connectivity for travellers headed to Asian destinations. Through the new partnership, KAYAK will now be one of Value Alliance’s metasearch partners, allowing travellers to find greater cross-airline flight options, view more cost friendly airfares on KAYAK, and book for multi-city flights to top and trending destinations in the Asia Pacific region.

Value Alliance comprises seven leading Asia Pacific low-cost airlines, and is also the first airline alliance that enables cross-airline booking for connecting flights and ancillary products offered by its member airlines.

Amadeus, Ctrip make it easier to buy Spanish rail tickets

Spain aims to attract one million Chinese tourists by 2020. Therefore, it is essential to offer them the best travel options in an accessible and convenient way.

Amadeus’ new distribution agreement with Ctrip will allow around 90 million registered monthly active users globally of the Ctrip suite of brands easy access to tickets from Renfe, the national Spanish rail operator. Through this partnership, Ctrip customers from anywhere in the world will be able to book and pay for Spanish rail tickets in their own language and currency.

Rail routes will be available first across the Ctrip Group, which includes Ctrip.com and Qunar for Chinese customers and Trip.com for overseas customers. Following this launch, Ctrip plans to make Renfe’s offer available on mobile, through the new Ctrip application TrainPal. It will enable travellers to search for train fares on the go using its smart search engine and will provide simplified bookings and secure payments, as well as discounted fares.

Amy Wei, CEO of Ctrip International Train Ticketing, said: “Our partnership with Amadeus is integral to our expansion strategy for rail. We already provide tickets for train routes in China as well as in other overseas markets. With the help of Amadeus, we are able to offer our customers even more rail options. This means our customers can fulfil all their European travel needs without ever having to leave the Ctrip network which they know and trust.”

Kiwi.com debuts new AR app feature

Kiwi.com has launched a new in-app feature that uses augmented reality technology to measure cabin baggage without needing to be at the airport. The new feature will be available for all Android and iOS devices that enable customers to measure the dimensions of their cabin baggage using the latest in AR technology.

The new function pairs with flights booked through Kiwi.com and curates bespoke cabin bag dimension requirements (LxWxH) for the specific airline the ticket is booked with. The application uses the devices’ camera to generate a virtual box around the baggage and the dimensions are measured from this.

The Kiwi.com application continues to incorporate innovations that improve the lives of its users. The multimodal capabilities allow users to search for trips by plane, train or bus and the NOMAD feature enables exploration of trips with several destinations.

The tool also uses geolocation to share tourist information about nearby attractions across all destinations. In addition to this, the possibility of exploring nearby airports and see the services they offer (free Wi-Fi, restaurants) and transport links are also accessible through the application.

Alison Couper of Kiwi.com said: “It’s a really efficient new function to the app which I think all Kiwi.com customers will find helpful. Travelling can be a stressful experience and it’s important for the modern traveller to be in the know. This is the first of many updates we plan to roll out in 2019. We’re really looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks of it”.

‘Zappier-like’ marketplace

Rentals United, the cloud-based channel manager and technology solution for the short-term rental industry, has announced a partnership with PriceLabs, a leading dynamic pricing and yield management software provider focused on the private accommodation space.

Rentals United currently handles over 250,000 listings that are connected to 60+ leading and niche listing sites globally. This new partnership with PriceLabs will ensure that Rentals United customers can take advantage of real-time market data in an automated way.

This latest integration builds on Rentals United’s goal to develop a ‘Zappier-like’ marketplace of connections to support the growing breed of ‘tech-enabled’ property managers that are increasingly using automation in order to grow their businesses.

Anurag Verma, co-founder of Chicago-based PriceLabs said: “Through our integration with Rentals United, property managers will be able to use our data-driven pricing and dynamic minimum stay approach to maximize revenue. We take into account demand and supply trends – including seasons and events – around each property, but also provide managers with a wide array of customization options to make sure they can implement and automate strategies that work the best for their portfolio.”

Chinese Friendly Hotels

Ctrip.com International, Ltd. has signed an agreement with upscale global hoteliers Millennium Hotels and Resorts (MHR) to develop a global distribution strategy promoting MHR properties to Ctrip’s 300 million customer base.

It marks the start of an alliance enabling Ctrip to offer MHR’s iconic portfolio of hotels in the USA, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australasia to its China-based business and leisure travel clients. Through the aegis of a strategic collaboration agreement, MHR will partner with Ctrip’s membership program, which will certify its properties as “Chinese Friendly Hotels” and enable them to benefit from Ctrip’s influential ranking system. MHR and Ctrip will also work towards customer initiatives such as the launching of a flagship store on Ctrip’s digital platforms, joint marketing campaigns as well as knowledge sharing and cross-exposure programmes for team members.

David Zhou of Ctrip said, “We are so grateful to be enhancing our relationship with MHR. Chinese outbound tourists reached nearly 150 million in 2018, and the growth for this year remains strong. By signing this China-focused distribution agreement with MHR, we are continuing to offer 300 million members the best hotel experience worldwide whilst enhancing MHR’s presence and boosting new business opportunities for them in the China Market.”

As you were stuffing your faces with the last morsels of Christmas leftovers, I was reading all the travel trends reports sent to TD – 20, to be precise.

Nearly everyone is sharing reports that aim to predict what the travel industry will look like in the future, based on the pertinent data they have collected the past year. So TD has a special New Year’s gift — the lord of all trends reports to keep you on top of your game in 2019 and to give you a 360-degree view of the future of travel.

Aviation

Spacious savings

According to Skyscanner, passengers will be booking business class and premium economy more often as both saw a growth of 62% and 46% respectively thanks to lower fares. Virtuoso claims that luxury travellers favour airlines with state-of-the-art business and first-class cabins.

Moreover, VIP airport arrivals that whisk travellers through customs and immigration are growing in demand. Requests for private air transfers are on the rise.

Travellers are increasingly using mobile devices to book flights and travel. Skyscanner saw a spike of up to 3.5% in mobile use last year. In most Asian countries, booking and paying on mobile devices are becoming the norm; therefore, it will be beneficial for airlines to reinforce their mobile presence.

Brand USA predicts that airlines will continue to strengthen existing routes while adding a few more but, more importantly, low-cost carriers will offer more long-haul flights making it more accessible to more people.

Airlines = OTAs?

We talked about NDC a lot in 2018 and saw its fruition when Qantas welcomed Corporate Travel Management (CTM) in its NDC-fied booking platform. According to FCM Solutions, 2019 is also the year when we will see a major focus on distribution as NDC becomes more of a reality.

In relation to NDC, more airlines are moving towards the hotel intermediary space – and in some cases even tour operator space – to increase revenues, Hotelbeds predicts.

Over the last few years, the company has seen a trend for airlines approaching to start selling hotel accommodation on their website, they added. As airlines look to diversify their revenue sources and increase their margins, the opportunity to cross-sell a loyal customer a hotel room offers potentially more profit than the flight itself.

Hotelbeds also added that we are seeing more airlines wanting to go a step further and actually become a tour operator– offering a complete package to customers by giving them a combination of a flight and hotel.

Hospitality

LTI - Luxury Travel Intelligence

Unconventional accommodation

Experiential travellers are craving to stay in unconventional accommodations, Virtuoso noted.

A UK-based hotel PR firm also added that hotels will be bringing the great outdoors inside the hotel by increasing  the number of all-season terraces, showcasing gorgeous indoor plants and panoramic views. This trend will help guests to enjoy the great outdoors from the luxury and comfort of their rooms, creating memorable experiences that highlight natural beauty.

Booking.com said that people want to explore uncharted territories, such as accommodation under the sea as well as in space. The more unconventional it is, the better it looks on social media.

Airbnb slowdown

After we witnessed the exponential growth of the alternative accommodation sector, this year has seen a massive slowdown in growth and that will continue next year, according to the Hotelbeds report. The likes of Airbnb are still growing well, of course, but nothing like before.

Perhaps explains why Airbnb is expanding into other areas, such as cross-selling ancillaries or ‘Experiences’. They are realising that ultimately they are intermediaries – just another sales platform – and in that respect, they are becoming more like OTAs.

As alternative accommodation is declining, Brand USA predicts that we can expect more luxury hotel openings. In line with this, service will become the key differentiator for hotels, not price – helped by technological innovation.

However, we may see the sharing economy as one of the major new options in corporate travel. Based on Airbnb’s report, the company has seen a huge number of business travellers using Airbnb for Work in 2018.

Sustainable practices

We have seen many hotels adopting sustainable practices this year, such as banning single-use plastics in the property as well as participating in environmental clean-ups. According to WATG, as the sharing and resale economy grows apace and we increasingly reject the built-in obsolescence of so much of what we buy, product designers are reassessing product lifespans.

Therefore, 2019 will see the first refurbishment strategy where 100% of the design is built upon repurposed and recycled furniture and fittings.

Tech

Seamless solutions

Booking.com, FOX PR, and CLIA all agree that frictionless travel is the next main goal of the industry and technology plays a big part in this. Travellers love the idea of keyless room-access, robotic concierge, and personalised travel tips.

We have seen initial steps towards these, with hotels adopting smart technology in their rooms and use of AI and robots in processing inquiries, check-in, and check-out. Travellers also rely increasingly on AI and voice search when buying travel.

Meanwhile, highly personalised itineraries, amenities and individually curated experiences are increasingly in demand. Short-form, hyper-relevant and individualised content, which can be integrated into a traveller’s feed, is also becoming the norm.

Social media’s influence

Instagram makes travellers look for the most captivating backdrops and CLIA claims that Instagram is a force in cruise too. As more cruise tours offer WiFi connectivity onboard, passengers are filling their feeds with experiences both onboard and on land destinations.

For APAC travellers, Skyscanner reveals that social media comes second only to word of mouth for source of inspiration.

Cybersecurity

2018 saw numerous cloud cybersecurity incidents due to lack of security fundamentals. According to Palo Alto Networks, travel companies will augment their security to prevent similar events and to manage risks.

Moreover, we may finally see companies and executives being penalised when they do not take GDPR seriously. This will be alongside the implementation of the NIS Directive, the EU Cybersecurity Act and the US Cloud Act.

Cruise

CLIA revealed some interesting insights into the cruise sector in 2019. The report claimed that 30 million passengers are expected to go on a cruise next year. 18 new ships are scheduled to debut in 2019. Below are some of the highlights of the report:

  • Cruise companies now offer total wellness offering to relieve stress. These are in the form of restorative spa experiences, healthy menu choices, and fitness equipment
  • Travellers are setting sights on destinations that were previously out of reach – some are accessible only by cruise, such as the Galapagos and Antarctica. Bucket lists have become more goal-oriented and cruise lines are aiming to meet these demands
  • Gen Z is set to be the largest consumer of travel in 2020 and they prefer experiences over material things. The appeal of multiple destinations and unique experiences are attracting this generation of experiential travellers
  • Off-peak season adventures are also rising in popularity. Cruise offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences even during colder months

Tourism

Hot destination: Turkey

Skyscanner, FOX PR, ABTA and Kayak expressed travellers’ sudden interest in Turkey and claimed that it will be one of the hottest destinations next year. Skyscanner and Kayak both saw an increase in demand on flights to Turkey. Kayak saw a 60% jump on UK travellers booking flights, while Skyscanner observed 35% increase of APAC traveller bookings.

Meanwhile, Japan remains as the top destination in APAC region with three of its cities made it to the top 10, according to Skyscanner. For UK travellers, New York remains the number one holiday destination.

Luxury and experiential travel agency Virtuoso, on the other hand, places Italy on top of many rankings, such as: top global destination, top millennial destination, top family destination and top honeymoon destination.

Rise of female and solo travellers

2019 is expected to see an increase in the number of solo and women travellers, says CLIA, TAXIDIO, WATG and Brand USA. More travellers will be travelling outside their comfort zones. Women will go on high-octane adventures, including women-only journeys that empower and provide an opportunity to develop new skills and passions.

A 2018 survey of US women identified that 73% of women felt that travel makes them stronger. Now, 75% of cultural, adventure and nature travellers are female.

Meanwhile, there will be a rise in epic adventures and solo travel. As many of us opt for ever more localised experiences, millennials and luxury consumers are swapping holidays in popular destinations for trips to unexpected, unexplored and difficult to get to locations.

30% of high-earning travellers have admitted that they are travelling alone to be alone, so there is no surprise that the requests for helipads have been on the rise by 86% in the last year. 32% of travellers are now stating private beaches are a must for their holiday next year.

Thanks to sharing economy, people will embark on sharecations. GTC Travel Group claims that group travel for next year is geared around education. GTC Travel Group saw a rise in student group travel to China and South Africa of up to 30% and 15% growth, respectively. More British students are eager to learn Mandarin.

Experiences

Bespoke experiences are still king

Travellers will continue to seek new and authentic experiences, going beyond sightseeing. Bucket lists will continue to become more goal-oriented.

There is a strong desire to live like a local, and luxury increasingly represents authentic experiences. While unique experiences remain a priority, travellers also want to ensure that they can travel in safety, regardless of their gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

Driven by social media content, travellers are craving unconventional and dazzling Instagram moments, says WATG.

From private dinners with influential local figures to obscure local festivals and events in breathtaking locations, the creation of the ‘one-of-a-kind’ moments will have strong resonance in the year ahead. Celebration travel will grow at a rapid pace and become stronger and more innovative in content.

Conscious travel

According to Booking.com, 2019 will see more conscious travellers roam the world as 49% feel social issues in possible travel destinations are of real importance when choosing where to go and 58% choose not to go to a destination if they feel it negatively impacts the people who live there.

Millennials and Gen Z travellers will look for sustainable experiences in their destination as 86% of global travellers say that they would be willing to spend some time on activities that offset the environmental impact of their stay.

ABTA, CLIA, FOX PR, WATG and Stay One Degree all agree that now, the majority strive to be a responsible traveller. A key topic for the year ahead will be how to maximise economic benefits while managing environmental and social downsides everywhere from Maya Bay in Thailand to the Everglades National Park in Florida; this is a global dilemma.

Even the top 1% is more charitable. 16% of luxury travellers said that the environment is a top concern for them. Bookings for ethical and eco-friendly escapes are predicted to rise by 70% within the network that has an emphasis on properties with natural energy and locally-sourced produce.

In addition, there is a rise in people’s desire to learn something while away, as well as an increase in volunteering and skills-based vacations across generations as 56% of global travellers agree travelling has taught them invaluable life skills.

Even for luxury travellers, Stay One Degree reports that 21% said that the most important factor to booking a trip is if they are able to learn a new skill whilst on holiday. Luxury travellers value their time and are looking to make full use of their time off from work and their everyday tasks. Many want to return from their trips with something priceless and enriching to their life.

The report adds that 33% of luxury travellers are actively seeking out food-specific destinations with access well respected Michelin-starred restaurants, local produce markets and nearby culinary courses.

65% of high-earners said that it will be necessary to have a personal chef to stay at their holiday homes for the duration of their stay with many of them wanting to receive lessons during their stay. The rise in culinary travel also sees a vast number of people travelling for beverage-based experiences unavailable in their hometowns or countries.

Sweat crawl replaces pub crawl

In the past, we used to enjoy pub crawls. Now, travellers are gym-hopping. How the world has changed…

FOX PR reports that 2019 will be all about fitness with ‘sweat crawls’ and mobile workouts.

30% of luxury travellers have said that mindfulness and well-being activities are their main priority when booking their next holiday. The obvious yoga retreat option remains popular; however, holiday homeowners are noticing in-depth spiritual guidance and self-discovery treatments are becoming necessary to secure bookings.

Even in hotels and cruise ships, restorative experiences are becoming more popular and spa and gym are normal amenities.

Bite-sized travel

Several reports claim that travellers go on much shorter holidays– an average of three days. Shorter trips should not mean less fun; travellers are squeezing curated travel itineraries into shorter timeframes.

According to Skyscanner, APAC travellers are notorious in this field due to several factors, while Westerners go on much longer holidays – an average of seven to 10 days.

One of the driving forces in bite-sized travel is the rise of bleisure. Business travellers combine business and leisure; therefore, they often extend their business trip to accommodate a few days of personal activities.

Europe’s largest online travel company eDreams ODIGEO has launched a new augmented reality function across its mobile apps which allows travellers to quickly scan their hand luggage to ensure it meets airline size requirements.

This new feature is fully personalised, automatically using the luggage details from each customer’s booking, including the relevant airline. The free service covers 80% of flights sold through eDreams ODIGEO and is currently available on iOS devices with iOS 11 or higher.

This augmented reality scanner is another addition to the range of unique features offered through eDreams ODIGEO’s mobile apps across its leading brands eDreams, GO Voyages, Opodo and Travellink.

The AR app feature is nothing new. A similar feature was introduced by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in its iOS app and recently extended the feature to the KLM Messenger platform.

Kayak also took advantage of Apple’s ARKit technology by introducing a new Bag Measurement tool that will help flyers to calculate the size of your carry-on whether it fits the overhead cabin.

eDreams ODIGEO’s feature is inspired by a recent international study, which states that moments immediately prior to departure generate the most stress for travellers due to the last minute preparations that must be taken into account – including luggage restrictions.

With this new service, eDreams ODIGEO intends to make travel easier and more hassle-free for the 18.5 million customers it serves every year, by allowing them to check if their bag complies with airline regulations before they get to the airport. If passengers find their bag is too big, they are able to book additional checked luggage within the app in a matter of seconds.

According to Christoph Dieterle, chief product and retail officer of eDreams ODIGEO, “Introducing this free service to our app marks another step towards making travelling simpler, hassle-free and more enjoyable for our customers. The augmented reality scanner saves travellers time and makes preparing to go away less stressful. It builds on the impressive functionality of our apps, which already offer free services such as a real-time flight status notification and credit card scanner.

“Every day at eDreams ODIGEO, our team puts the latest technologies to work on behalf of our customers, creating tailored travel services so that customers can get the best prices and the greatest convenience there is to offer.”

The Priceline Group has completed its acquisition of Momondo, the European travel meta-search company that offers flights, hotels and car rentals.

The agreement, which is worth approximately US$550 million, will now see Momondo and its subsidiary, Cheapflights, merged into Priceline’s Kayak brand to create a global travel search business.

“Momondo and Cheapflights are premium brands that have garnered a loyal customer base throughout key markets in Europe, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome the Momondo Group team to the Priceline Group family,” said Glenn Fogel, Priceline’s group president & CEO.

Under the terms of the cash transaction, Priceline has acquired all the outstanding shares of the Momondo Group, which was founded as Cheapflights in 1996 and acquired the younger Momondo brand in 2011, before merging under the Danish company’s name.

Plans for the acquisition were first announced in February this year. Following the completion of the deal, Momondo will be overseen by Kayak CEO, Steve Hafner.

“Adding Momondo and Cheapflights to Kayak’s portfolio of brands helps further our mission of providing the world’s favourite travel planning tools,” said Hafner. “We’re eager to learn from each other to make each brand and business even better.”

The Priceline Group operates six main online travel brands: Booking.com, Priceline.com, Kayak, Agoda.com, Rentalcars.com and OpenTable.

Air New Zealand introduces smart passport service

Air New Zealand has launched a new mobile app that can tell travellers when it’s time to renew their passport. The new app will enable the user to scan and save their passport information, and the app then sends a timely reminder when it’s time to renew. The new app is available for passengers holding New Zealand, Australian, British and American passports.

Kayak introduces emoji travel searches

Kayak has started allowing its customers to search for travel using emojis. The site has initially introduced 10 searchable emoji-city combinations, with more planned. For example, the New York City emoji features the Statue of Liberty and there is a slot machine emoji for Las Vegas. Kayak is also now calling on travellers to vote on which city-emoji combinations to launch next.

Japan plans facial recognition at airports

The Japanese government has announced plans to introduce a new type of unmanned gates at major airports that incorporate facial recognition technology. The new gates will take approximately 15 seconds to photograph passengers and check their face against their passport. The system is scheduled to be introduced at Japan’s major international airports by the end of 2018.

MSC Cruises provides new “Port Info” service

MSC Cruises has created a new, complimentary “Port Info” service to provide its passengers with a central point of information for every destination and shore excursion. Port Info will offer personal, tailored information about what to see, where to eat and where to visit in port, as well as assistance with local transportation bookings and the ability to arrange private tours.

Most travellers would imagine that they would only have to pay a small fee, if anything at all, to carry an infant (under 2) on their lap during a flight.

But research conducted for a new guide dedicated to travel with kids by travel search engine Kayak, has found that in some cases, the cost can be up to four times that of the adult fare.

According to Kayak, Ryanair is currently advertising flights from just £4.99 on its website (from Stansted to European destinations). However, the fee for travellers to take an infant on their lap is £20 each way, four times the adult fare. This means it would be far cheaper for travellers to book an extra adult seat for their baby instead of carrying them on their lap.

It is a similar story with EasyJet. It currently offers prices from £20.49 (flying from Gatwick to Belfast). Yet once again, booking an infant fare (£22) costs travellers more than an adult seat. The research found that Jet2 also charges a flat fee of £20 to carry a child, regardless of the cost of the adult fare.

However, other airlines take a fairer approach to infant fares, meaning parents can avoid being stung in the pocket if they consider their airline options carefully before travelling. Flybe, for example, charges 12% of the adult fare for an infant on any route. British Airways has a similar fare structure, charging 10%.

So, what do parents get for their money when it comes to baggage? All airlines in the research will carry a stroller or pushchair, with some offering two items in the hold.

British Airways allows parents an extra bag on board and in the hold. Infants flying on Ryanair receive a cabin luggage allowance of 5kg – half the normal cabin luggage allowance for an adult fare. However, Flybe and Jet2 do not offer any additional baggage allowance according to their websites.

Suzanne Perry – travel expert at KAYAK, commented: “The research shows that some airlines are considerably more parent-friendly than others. While a flat fee to carry infants offers better value when the ticket prices are higher, that doesn’t translate so well for cheap flight deals.

“Our advice would be to check the policies of each airline before travelling with children – and if an adult fare is less, check if you can purchase an adult ticket for your baby instead. Not only could it be cheaper, you may get far more space as you will also get an extra seat, and you will get a higher luggage allowance too.”

Ticket prices

Lap infant Child (2-11) Youth (12-15)
British Airways 10% of adult fare 75% of adult fare Adult fare
Jet2 £20 each way Adult fare Adult fare
Flybe 12% of adult fare Adult fare Adult fare
EasyJet £22 each way Adult fare Adult fare
Ryanair £20 Adult fare Adult fare

What airlines offer for infants

Date you can fly to Luggage allowance
British Airways End of 36th week Extra cabin bag allowed (included in your allowance) if you have an infant. Extra checked bag of same allowance as adults also allowed.  Pushchair/car seat allowed free of charge
Jet2 End of 33rd week for return flight No extra luggage allowance. Pushchair/car seat allowed free of charge if combined weight is under 10kg
Flybe End of 33rd week (after this need clearance from Flybe) No extra luggage allowance. Pushchair allowed free of charge
EasyJet End of 35th week No extra luggage allowance. You are able to travel with two of the following items free of charge:

Travel Cot

Pushchair

Double pushchairs

Buggy

Car seat

Collapsible or non-collapsible pram

Booster seat

Baby back carrier.

Ryanair 36 weeks Extra cabin allowance of up to 5kg allowed free of charge. Pushchair also allowed free of charge in addition to one of the following items: car seat, booster seat, travel cot

With Spring just around the corner, attention for many Brits will be turning to where to go for their summer holiday.

Ibiza
Ibiza

According to KAYAK.co.uk, prices to many key destinations, including Spanish and Portuguese resorts, and many popular long haul destinations, have dropped massively for holidays this summer (June, July, August).

Compared to last summer, average prices to Ibiza have fallen by 32%, despite it being the fifth most searched-for world-wide destination by Brits.

Furthermore, flight prices to Faro in Portugal have fallen by a fifth (20%), but the biggest flight price drops in Europe, however, are to Pula in Croatia, which have fallen by 43%. The seaside city, which features roman ruins, has benefitted from an increase in airline routes, which has brought prices down. Searches have more than doubled compared to last year, and its popularity is set to increase further in 2017, when British Airways begins direct flights from Heathrow in July.

Many perennially popular resorts have also seen their prices slashed. Prices for flights to Alicante and Mallorca are both down 19%, whilst Malaga has seen average prices for flights fall by 17%.

Many worldwide destinations have also seen significant price reductions – and with long-haul flights costing more, the percentage savings translate to even bigger savings. The bargain of the summer is Mexico, with flights to Mexico City down on average 39%, or £289 cheaper than last year.

Another Western Hemisphere bargain is Rio de Janeiro. The famous city was very popular in 2016 thanks to the international sporting events, but interest from Brits in 2017 has waned significantly, with searches down 63%. This is leading to reduced prices, with savings this summer of 23% (-£173).

Looking Eastwards, Singapore is the Asian bargain of the summer. With year-round sunshine, Singapore has history, World Heritage sites, shopping and tourist attractions in spades. The popularity of the city-state is increasing year-on-year with Brits, but thanks to increasing numbers of flights, prices are falling and are 20% less (-£108) in summer 2017 compared to 2016.

And for those who have been eyeing up a trip to New Zealand, now could be the time. Prices have fallen by 22%, which translates to a saving of £212 pounds. If flying as a family, that translates to significant savings.

According to the data, Brits are falling out of love with the USA in a major way. Searches for flights to key US destinations have fallen off a cliff when it comes to holidays in 2017. Searches for flights to Tampa are down 58%, Orlando is down 58%, Fort Lauderdale is down 57% and Miami is down 52% when compared to last year. To add to the woes, searches for San Diego are down 43%, Las Vegas is down 36% and Los Angeles is down 32%.

As prices to many destinations fall, it’s unsurprising that some locations have seen sharp rises – meaning travellers may be best advised to let prices cool off before planning a trip. Stavanger in Norway is the place which has seen prices rise the most. Flights from the UK have increased, on average, a huge 153%. This is likely down to a mixture of an increased interest in Scandinavian culture amongst Brits, and the cancellation of a direct air services to Stavanger from the US – meaning many will be travelling via the UK, increasing demand and in turn, the cost.

The increase in popularity of Montenegro has also seen a sharp increase in flight prices, which have risen by 122%. Other destinations which have seen significant price rises are Gothenburg (98%), Kiev (71%) and Tangier (56%).

Suzanne Perry – travel expert at KAYAK, commented: “With so many factors impacting holiday prices, from demand to the number of airline routes, year-on-year analysis always shows interesting trends.

“The news overall for Brits is good – many of the most popular European destinations in Spain, Portugal and Eastern Europe have seen nice falls in prices which will benefit many travellers. And factors are combining to lead to some massive price drops in more far-flung locations like Singapore, Brazil and Mexico – meaning that it could be the time to go for those who have been interested in these destinations for a while.

“However, the story of the summer is the fall of interest in the States. We noted that searches to the USA dropped after the new president came to office – but it seems like this is a longer-term trend. The US has historically been one of the most popular countries for Brits, but searches to popular destinations falling by over half in one year is a massive shift. With hotel prices also falling significantly, it may only be a matter of time before airlines follow suit. It will be interesting to see if it can bounce back in 2018.”

In the fast-paced Asian cities of Singapore and Hong Kong, travellers are using travel comparison sites in an effort to save time when planning their trips, a new report has found.

In a joint survey, Kayak, Priceline’s travel search site, and GoBear, which compares insurance and banking products, found that 42% respondents in these two Asian cities went to comparison sites as their first step of travel planning, mainly for reasons of speed and convenience.

Asians uses travel search sites to save time and money, the report found
Asians uses travel search sites in an effort to save time and money, the report found

Price transparency was also as a key factor in the decision to use travel search sites, and price was identified by 71% of respondents as the most important consideration when choosing an airline.

The study also found that, on average, travellers in Singapore and Hong Kong compare four websites or companies before they purchase travel products. A further 18% of the respondents said they compare six sites or more, of which 2% compare more than 11 sites before they make a booking.

“The results from the survey reinforce the importance of price for travellers, and we are glad to see that consumers in the region are savvy on using travel search and comparison sites for their planning,” said Imbert Fung, Kayak’s director for Southeast Asia & India.

“Nonetheless, we are surprised that 2% of the respondents search over 11 sites before making a decision. At Kayak, we search hundreds of travel sites at once for our users. We believe our one-stop service provides a convenient platform for the time-pressed and price-conscious consumers to easily plan their itinerary.”

More than half (51%) of all respondents identified safety and security as their top consideration when planning a trip, although Singaporeans were more concerned about this than travellers from Hong Kong. Flight delays were cited by both nationalities as the most frustrating aspect of travel. Hong Kong-based travellers were also more easily upset by loss of baggage and theft, while Singaporeans chose “too many tourists” as a major grievance.

Given these concerns, the majority of the respondents (54%) across all ages and both nationalities said they are willing to spend around 5% of their total travel budget on insurance.

The survey gathered responses from more than 1,000 people aged from 18 to over 45 across Singapore and Hong Kong.

The Priceline Group has confirmed plans to acquire Momondo, the European travel meta-search company.

The agreement, which is worth US$550 million, will see Momondo and Cheapflights merged into Kayak to create a global travel search brand.

“Meta-search is appealing to consumers and we’re keen to expand our global footprint,” said Glenn Fogel, CEO of the Priceline Group. “Momondo and Cheapflights will be nice additions to our meta portfolio under Kayak.”

Under the terms of the cash transaction, Priceline will acquire all outstanding shares of the Momondo Group, which was founded as Cheapflights in 1996 and acquired the younger Momondo brand in 2011, before merging under the Danish company’s name.

Hugo Burge, CEO of Momondo Group, commented; “The Priceline Group has a proven track record of operating successful, customer-centric travel brands all over the world. We couldn’t be more excited to join such an esteemed group of loved brands and join forces with Kayak to bring the best in meta search to our growing customer bases worldwide.”

The acquisition is expected to close later in the year, subject to regulatory approvals. Following the deal, Momondo will be overseen by Kayak CEO, Steve Hafner.

“Momondo and Cheapflights have built great products serving loyal users across Europe,” said Hafner. “We’re looking forward to learning from them and sharing best practices as our brands expand globally.

The Priceline Group operates six main online travel brands: Booking.com, Priceline.com, Kayak, Agoda.com, Rentalcars.com and OpenTable.

Timing is everything when it comes to scoring the cheapest prices for flights and hotels in 2017, according to new analysis by travel search engine KAYAK.co.uk. By analysing data based on millions of searches, KAYAK has found that with a little planning, travellers can save huge amounts of money.

The research has found that Brits can save up to 80% on flights to Europe and internationally by booking their airfares at the right time.
The best prices for mid-haul flights can generally be found just one or two months in advance. The biggest savings can be made when flying to the popular destination of Faro in Portugal, where flights are 80% cheaper when booked one month in advance compared to the worst time to book.
And similar savings can be made for other key destinations. Flights to Mallorca can be 75% cheaper when booked two months in advance compared to the worst time and flights to Tenerife and Rome, are 66% and 61% cheaper respectively when booked one month in advance. However, more forward planning is required for certain destinations to get the best deals. When it comes to the increasingly popular destination of Reykjavik for example, five months in advance is the best time to book, which offers savings of up to 61% with an average price of £69.
To get the best savings on flights to the most popular long-haul destinations, the best deals can also be found by waiting until nearer to the departure date. The research from KAYAK.co.uk found booking two to four months in advance of the departure date secures the best deals on the majority of destinations in the top 10.
For certain popular international locations huge savings can be made if Brits are prepared to wait until two months before departure to book. Orlando can be as much as 41% cheaper, for Los Angeles travellers can save up to 40% and for Bali the savings can go up to 45%.
Again, there are some exceptions. Holidaymakers aiming to visit New Zealand can secure the best price if they book a trip to Auckland seven months in advance, resulting in savings of up to 58%, when compared to the most expensive booking time.

The analysis of the best days of the week on which to travel answers the ‘when to fly’ question, showing that with a bit of flexibility and the right itinerary, the best flight prices can be secured. On all routes, both long and short, flying out in the middle of the week is the cheapest option. The best departure and return days generally fluctuate between Tuesday and Thursday.
Huge savings can be made – for example, flights to Mallorca departing on a Tuesday with return on Tuesday, can be up to 75% cheaper than those booked to depart on a Saturday with return on Wednesday. It is a similar story for Rome, where the savings are up to 72% for departure on Tuesday, returning Thursday compared to departing and returning on a Saturdays.

As with flights, Brits can save up to 60% by booking 3 or 4-star hotels at the right time. On average, booking accommodation in the most popular holiday destinations one to two months before arrival can result in significant savings.
For example, booking a hotel two months in advance can result in savings in Benidorm of up to 50%, in Dublin up to 46% and in Krakow up to 56%. Those happy to leave it until even nearer to their trip can score the highest savings on some of Brits’ most popular destinations. By booking Venice one month in advance, savings can be up to 60% on the hotel room per night.

Booking one month in advance is also the golden rule to save money on accommodation for Amsterdam, Barcelona or Paris. However, if Brits want to stay in Reykjavik or Maspalomas they should be prepared to book well in advance as six and eight months respectively, can offer savings of up to 38% and 41%, in comparison to the most expensive month.
Destinations further afield can have quite different levels of flexibility depending on where the traveller is heading to. Cancun or Dubai require the most planning and pre-booking is vital; securing a 3 or 4-star hotel six and nine months in advance respectively is needed to score savings of up to 22% and 16%. Less planning is required to reduce spending for certain destinations. New York offers savings of up to 47%, Orlando up to 38% or Singapore up to 25% when booked one to two months ahead.
For Brits looking for the ultimate budget trip, KAYAK.co.uk’s research has also identified the cheapest destination to fly to, both within the EU and out. Madrid (£66 on average) is the cheapest destination for Brits wanting to travel mid-haul in 2017, while perennially-popular Marrakech in Morocco (£93 on average), tops the list as the cheapest airfare internationally.
For both destinations the best airfare can be secured one month prior to departure, resulting in savings of up to 55% and 62% respectively. The best days to travel are Sunday to Tuesday for Madrid, while Brits planning a trip to Marrakech should book a Friday to Friday trip to score savings on their airfare.

Priceline will now be able to acquire shares in Ctrip on the open market

The Priceline Group is planning to invest US$500 million in China’s Ctrip International, as part of an expanded commercial partnership.

The US-based online travel company, which operates brands including Booking.com, Agoda and Kayak, confirmed that it has enhanced its existing commercial agreement with Ctrip, which started in 2012. As part of the new agreement, Priceline has agreed to invest half a billion dollars in Ctrip through a convertible bond, while Ctrip has granted Priceline permission to acquire its shares in the open market over the next 12 months.

As a result, the Priceline Group could hold up to 10% of Ctrip’s outstanding shares and will have the right to appoint an “observer” to the Ctrip board of directors.

“Ctrip is the clear leader in online travel in China and we are pleased with the growth in Ctrip bookings through Booking.com and Agoda over the last two years,” said Darren Huston, president & CEO of Priceline. “We are eager to build upon what has already become a great partnership, and thrilled to be able to offer our customers even more hotel options in China.

“Travel to and from China is growing rapidly, and through this partnership, we have an opportunity to further help the world experience China, and China experience the world,” he added.

The two companies initially joined forces in 2012, with the partnership allowing Ctrip’s customers to access the Priceline Group’s global portfolio of more than 500,000 hotels and resorts outside China. In return, Priceline was offered access to Ctrip’s Chinese inventory 100,000 accommodation options.

According to the companies, the expanded partnership will see Priceline and Ctrip provide each other with hotel inventory “on an enlarged scale with more favourable partnership terms”.

Ctrip will also now be able to offer more of Priceline’s brands to its customers, including inventory from rentalcars.com and OpenTable, while Priceline will have access to Ctrip’s air and attraction ticketing services.

“The Priceline Group is the global leader in online accommodations, and as such, a key strategic partner for us as we look to expand our global footprint,” said James Liang, co-founder, chairman & CEO of Ctrip.  “Both of our companies operate on the same philosophy to deliver exceptional products and seamless online booking experiences for our customers, and we are eager to jointly invest in improving the experience for travellers worldwide.”
