IHG Hotels & Resorts has announced the expansion of Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants with the signing of Kimpton Koh Samui, the second Kimpton hotel in Thailand following the brand’s debut in October 2020.

The 138-key luxury boutique beachfront property on Choengmon Beach will open later this year where guests will enjoy Kimpton’s signature heartfelt service and locally-inspired design features. A short drive to Chaweng Beach, Fisherman’s Village walking street and Koh Samui International Airport, domestic and international travellers alike will benefit from its convenient location and proximity to major tourist attractions.

Tranquility and privacy will be easy to find at Kimpton Koh Samui as it will offer stunning luxury pool villas with unique direct access to the beach. InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) will debut its luxury boutique brand Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants in two new markets next month, with Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok opening in Thailand on 1 October 2020 and Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo opening in Japan on 2 October 2020.

Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok, the first hotel in South East Asia for the brand, will open in the Thai capital at the heart of the Langsuan area and next to Lumpini Park. The hotel will feature 362 rooms, including 131 serviced residences, and a variety of F&B outlets.

Inspired by New York’s art and fashion scene, the Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo is located close to the iconic Shibuya Crossing and Shinjuku Station. Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo will offer 151 guest rooms, two F&B outlets, three meeting and event spaces, a health and fitness centre, and a chapel on level 16 doubling as an immersive art gallery for exclusive exhibits.

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants was acquired by IHG in 2015 and has since seen exciting growth beyond the US into Greater China and Europe. The brand is set to continue its momentum with over 30 new hotels in destinations including Bali and Paris in April 2021, and Hong Kong and in Malaysia in 2023.

The opening follows a two-year, full-scale renovation, restoring the grandeur of the former Grand Hotel Britannia, which opened in 1895. The hotel offers 169 guestrooms and suites, many of which boast private terraces or Juliet balconies for sweeping views of Venice’s iconic landmarks.

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants has announced it will open a boutique resort on Roatán Island’s exquisite West Bay Beach in early 2021.

The new Kimpton resort in Roatán, Honduras will mark the third resort for the boutique hotel company in the Caribbean, joining the Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa in Grand Cayman, which opened on November 2016, and the Kimpton Kawana Bay Resort in Grenada, which plans to open in late 2020.

Guests of the resort will enjoy amenities such as a rooftop sky bar with a glass-fronted pool, expansive outdoor pool, chef-driven restaurant, lounge and beach bars, fitness centre, a luxurious spa, water sports facilities and nearly 6,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meetings and events space.

Radisson Hotel Group has announced an agreement with Zdrojowa Invest & Hotels group for two new-build Radisson resorts in Poland. The two hotels will span the country, from the foothills of the Karkonosze Mountains in Szklarska Poręba to the northern Baltic coast in Kołobrzeg.

Part of the upscale Radisson brand, the opening for the Radisson Resort Kołobrzeg – Poland’s third Radisson-branded hotel – is planned for summer 2020. Furthermore, it will also be the first hotel under an international hotel brand in one of the biggest Polish seaside resorts.

The Radisson Resort Szklarska Poręba and Radisson Resort Kołobrzeg will be operated by Zdrojowa Hotels under an International Franchise Agreement with Radisson Hospitality AB.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has signed a management agreement to debut its boutique hotel brand, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, in Bangkok.

The agreement with Siam Sindhorn, a Thailand-based investment and development firm, will see the first Kimpton hotel in the country and the second across Southeast Asia and Korea region.

Scheduled to open in 2020, the new-built Kimpton Bangkok will feature 349 guest rooms, including 124 serviced residences. It will be under an hour’s drive from Suvarnabhumi Airport and will be located in the heart of the Langsuan area and nestled right beside Lumpini Park, one of the largest public parks in the city.

The strategic location will provide convenient access to the city’s prime districts including Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam and Chidlom, combined with the greenery of Lumpini Park.

Commenting on the landmark signing, Clarence Tan, managing director South East Asia and Korea (SEAK), IHG, said: “In line with our plans to bring our Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants brand to highly sought-after destinations across the globe, we want to address the rising needs of travellers in the region for a sophisticated yet personalised lifestyle travel experience.”

Kimpton Bangkok will be part of Sindhorn Village, a 22-acre mega mixed-use development with a selection of dining and retail options. To explore the attractions around the city, guests can take the metro from the Chidlom BTS station located a short walk from the hotel.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced that it will be expanding its Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants brand to Barcelona in 2019 and Bangkok in 2020.

In Barcelona, IHG has partnered with the private company, Casacuberta, which operates hotels in Madrid, Barcelona and Geneva, as part of a diverse portfolio.

Through the partnership, IHG will launch Kimpton Barcelona, a centrally located hotel in the heart of Barcelona’s old town near the famous La Rambla street. The property is surrounded by an eclectic mix of boutiques from local and international designers and is within easy walking distance to the city’s must-visit attractions.

The hotel highlights an infinity swimming pool with views of Barcelona’s city centre and the Cathedral. It provides 156 rooms, a lobby lounge, an all-day dining restaurant and 250 square metres of event space.

Adding Thailand to its roster, IHG has signed a management agreement with Siam Sindhorn to debut the Kimpton brand in Bangkok — the first Kimpton hotel in Thailand, and second across South East Asia and Korea region.

Opening in 2020, the newly-built Kimpton Bangkok will feature 349 curated and well designed guest rooms, including 124 serviced residences. It will be situated about an hour’s drive from Suvarnabhumi Airport, in the heart of the Langsuan area and right beside Lumpini Park, one of the largest public parks in the city.

Kimpton Bangkok will provide convenient access to the city’s prime districts including Sukhumvit, Silom, Siam and Chidlom, combined with the tranquillity and greenery of Lumpini Park.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) is planning to launch a series of new lifestyle hotels – including new brands – across Asia, as it seeks to target the new wave of affluent middle class travellers in the region.

Speaking to Travel Daily, Leanne Harwood, IHG’s vice president of operations for Southeast Asia & Korea, revealed that high-end lifestyle brands including Even Hotels, Hotel Indigo and Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants will expand across Asia in the coming months and years – both in urban and resort destinations – driven by millennial travel trends.

“[Southeast Asia] is a key area of growth – a huge emerging market in our own backyard,” Harwood told us. “There is a youthful trend in the region, a shift towards lifestyle hotels. There really are exciting times ahead.”

This expansion strategy has already started, with the arrival of the Hotel Indigo brand in key cities such as Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bangkok and Singapore, and the recent announcement of Asia Pacific’s first Even Hotel in Auckland. Asia is also home to the first-ever Hotel Indigo in a resort location, which opened recently in Bali’s upmarket Seminyak area.

And according to Harwood, the development of these lifestyle brands will follow a similar pattern, with market-entry openings in key gateway cities followed further down the line by other destinations, including resorts.

“We make sure we get it right in key cities, and then look towards further roll-out,” she said. “First and foremost we’re looking at first-tier cities.”

IHG’s three lifestyle brands all have a different twist, allowing them to cater for specific market niches. For example, Even Hotels targets health-conscious travellers, while Hotel Indigo is a boutique brand that focuses on neighbourhood experiences. Kimpton, which was acquired by IHG in 2015, has a strong F&B focus, and Harwood told Travel Daily that this concept would be a good fit for the Asian market.

“Kimpton hotels have standalone restaurants with off-street entrances, attracting walk-in traffic as well as hotel guests. Whereas Hotel Indigo is all about the neighbourhood, with restaurants that specialise in local street food, Kimpton’s restaurant could offer a different type of cuisine,” she revealed.

Guests at Kimpton hotels can also expect a more personalised level of service than at usual chain hotels. The hotel staff will be hired not by a single HR manager, but by a “panel of peers” who will focus on the candidate’s personality as well as their ability. This, Harwood believes, will create a team that is “empowered to give a ridiculously personalised service”.

IHG has not yet confirmed the locations of its first Kimpton hotels in Asia Pacific, or the date of their expected entry into the region. Harwood says “it’s all about finding the right partner,” and they appear to have found one in Australia’s Pro-Invest Group, which will develop the Even Hotel in Auckland. Scheduled to open in 2020, this 200-room hotel will be the first Even Hotel operating outside North America.

Hotel Indigo is already relatively well-established in the region, having expanded to 10 locations since its debut in 2010. And following the launch of Hotel Indigo Bali Seminyak Beach as the brand’s first property in a resort locale, IHG also recently signed an agreement for a second Indigo resort in Asia, located on the Indonesian island of Bintan.

Ahead of Kimpton’s arrival in Asia, the brand recently achieved two other firsts, with Kimpton De Witt in Amsterdam marking the brand’s first foray outside North America and Kimpton Seafire Resort & Spa in the Cayman Islands becoming its inaugural resort property.

By focusing on niche lifestyle concepts that cater for modern market segments, IHG is bucking the industry trend of creating broad boutique hotel “collections” and relying on the collective strength of its own brands. With the rising appetite among Asia’s millennial travellers for food, wellness and local experiences, IHG appears well-placed to become a lifestyle choice for the region’s emerging classes in the years ahead.

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants is about to go global, following its recent acquisition by IHG.

The company, which currently operates a hospitality portfolio across the US and Caribbean, will open its first hotel outside the Americas in 2017, with the launch of a property in Amsterdam.

The hotel, which is currently operating as Crowne Plaza Amsterdam City Centre, will undergo a major refurbishment, including a full renovation of the lobby, restaurants, facilities and guest rooms, before relaunching in 2017 as a 270-room luxury Kimpton hotel.

IHG said the hotel will be “boldly designed [with] boutique rooms”. It will have a “destination bar and restaurant” for guests and locals, a high-tech gym and meeting space.

IHG acquired Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants for US$430 million in January 2015.

“IHG’s ability to take Kimpton to new markets and geographies was a key part of the transaction and we’re delighted to announce this important milestone for the brand. It is testament to the global appeal of the Kimpton brand and to the strength of IHG’s global scale and relationships with owners across the world,” said Richard Solomons, IHG’s chief executive.

Angela Brav, IHG’s chief executive for Europe, added; “Europe, the home of boutique, is the perfect place for us to open our first Kimpton outside of the Americas and I can’t think of a better city to launch in than Amsterdam. The boutique segment is the fastest growing part of our industry – guests are hungry for the personal service, great design and unique experiences they offer.  Kimpton has an outstanding track record for stylish design and a passion for personal service and we see enormous opportunity for the brand around Europe.”

There are currently 59 Kimpton hotels and 74 restaurants and bars in the US. And IHG is planning to open at least 16 Kimpton hotels in the coming years.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has agreed to acquire US-based boutique hospitality company, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants.

The deal, worth US$430 million in cash, will see IHG take control of Kimpton’s 62 hotels in the US (plus 16 in the pipeline), along with 71 hotel-based restaurants and bars.

IHG said the acquisition would make it “the clear market leader in the boutique segment”, where it is already present with its Hotel Indigo brand. It also now plans to expand the Kimpton brand within the US, and to launch it globally.

“Kimpton is a well-established and highly successful business that has built an industry leading position in the US,” said Richard Solomons, CEO of IHG.

“It has created a portfolio of world-class hotels and destination restaurants, and the distinctive and innovative Kimpton brand will fit perfectly into the IHG brand family. Adding Kimpton to our portfolio of preferred brands creates the world’s largest boutique hotel business.

“We will use our scale, network of owner relationships, and powerful digital platforms to accelerate Kimpton’s growth both within the US and internationally,” he added.

Established in 1981, Kimpton now operates properties in major US hubs including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington DC. Following the acquisition, the Kimpton team will continue to be led by the company’s current chief operating officer, Mike DeFrino.
