Air France and KLM (AFKL) and Verteil, a leading NDC technology provider for 40+ global airlines since 2016 announced that AFKL’s offers are now live on Verteil Direct Connect. This integration will allow travel sellers to access AFKL’s advanced NDC contents directly through NDC based comprehensive booking engine portal & universal NDC APIs.

Verteil’s customers will have access to end-to-end NDC capabilities, including shopping, booking, fully automated servicing, and private / negotiated fares for multiple segments and market-specific requirements, through AFKL’s NDC channel. Additionally, customers will get access to the latest AFKL’s innovations supported via NDC, which includes features like continuous pricing, extra services, and personalized options. Air France and KLM will also keep improving these features over time.

Apart from the superior and real time content, bookings via Air France and KLM’s NDC channel, will not be surcharged as compared to legacy GDS channels. Jerrin Jos, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Verteil Technologies, said: ”We are delighted to facilitate Air France and KLM’s NDC content to our global travel seller base who are using Verteil NDC platform. We fully support Air France and KLM in their exciting journey, offering travel sellers differentiated content and innovative product offerings via the unconstrained and technologically superior NDC channel.

We are currently implementing changes with several airline partners and investing heavily in building product capabilities to support advanced functionality for travel sellers’ diverse business models.

Stéphane Ormand, VP Distribution, Air France and KLM, said: “With Verteil we expand the choice for our travel agent partners to access our offers via the NDC technology. Thanks to Verteil NDC platform, travel agents can now promote and sell cheaper Air France and KLM’s offers, thanks to additional price points, exclusive promotional fares and dynamic pricing for seats selection. This makes KLM and Transavia the first airlines in the world to share data on unruly passengers.  KLM and Transavia share data on passengers placed on the No Fly List for disruptive behaviour on board or on the ground, since 29 September. Both airlines will ban unruly passengers for five years, regardless of which airline operated the flight in question.

Paul Terstegge, executive vice president inflight services KLM said: “We stand up for our employees and our passengers and safety on board is always our top priority. When someone on board misbehaves, you end up with a very threatening situation in a very confined space, whether we’re talking about physical violence or sharing threatening images via Airdrop, for example. This has been happening more often, most recently on a flight to Croatia. What might be meant as a ‘joke’ causes huge distress to passengers, including children, and we consider it unacceptable for our crews as well. Banning such individuals for five years from both Transavia and KLM LM makes a strong statement and reflects the hazardous situation they have caused.”

Daan Pijzel, VP of cabin operations at Transavia: “Rise in complaints about unacceptable behaviour Unacceptable behaviour during flights is a growing problem. The number of complaints about unruly passengers increased during the pandemic. KLM currently records an average of five complaints leading to a ban every month, while Transavia bans at least one passenger a month. Although the number of complaints declined after the corona pandemic, airlines are seeing another surge. Unruly behaviour at high altitudes can have a major impact on passengers and crew.”

The two airlines are also calling on politicians and policymakers in the Netherlands and abroad to make it possible to share such data with other airlines. Extending a Transavia ban to KLM and vice versa widens the scope of the no-fly measure. It means that passengers on KLM or Transavia flights who are placed on the No Fly List are less likely to jeopardise flight safety on flights operated by the other airlines. The aim is to improve flight safety, with the mutual ban also serving as a deterrent.

There is an urgent need for this intervention. Safety on board is a top priority. Unruly passengers have a major impact on other passengers and our staff. Any form of physical violence towards crew or passengers is unacceptable. Such behaviour also leads to delays, which is very annoying for passengers and expensive for airlines.

Jetstar Asia has welcomed back Air France, KLM and British Airways to its international carrier partnerships. The renewed partnerships enable customers to seamlessly connect between Jetstar Asia’s Southeast Asian network and the European airlines’ global network via Singapore’s Changi Airport.

Customers travelling to/from Europe on these full-service carriers can once again transfer to a Jetstar Asia (3K) service in Singapore and travel to any of the ten destinations Jetstar Asia currently operates to: Bangkok, Clark, Ho Chi Minh City^, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Penang, Phnom Penh, Phuket and Surabaya.

Clive Ashmore Butler, head of commercial and alliances, Jetstar Asia said it was great to see more airlines return to Singapore, helping restore its position as a global hub.

“Our longstanding partnerships with Air France, KLM and British Airways will provide more exciting travel opportunities for our customers and a significant boost in the revival of Singapore’s air travel hub,” Butler said. “The Singapore government, Changi Airport and Jetstar Asia have an unwavering commitment to maintaining COVID-safe practices and providing peace-of-mind to all who transit through Singapore. While travelling, Jetstar’s Fly Well safety measures offer all our passengers an added layer of protection and demonstrate our commitment to keeping our people and our customers safe.”

Air France, KLM and British Airways join Emirates, who was the first Jetstar codeshare partner to recommence transit passengers via Singapore on 15 April.

Transit travellers must book their entire journey in one booking and check with the relevant authorities to ensure they meet all the relevant entry requirements for their final destination as restrictions may apply.

Transiting customers will be checked through at their first international departure point for the onward connecting service at Changi.

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport is set to fall rather quiet today as Dutch flag carrier KLM has announced it will bring most of its flying to a halt. The airline has taken the tough decision to suspend all intercontinental flights and some of its European flights in response to the government’s new COVID requirements.

As part of the Dutch government’s bid to crack down on the spread of COVID-19, the airline said that it will suspend 270 weekly flights, according to Reuters. When it takes effect on Jan. 22, the suspended routes will include all intercontinental flights as well as some connections between Amsterdam and other European destinations where the crew have to stay overnight.

The move follows the Netherlands’ announcement that it would require travellers from all countries to take a rapid COVID-19 test no later than four hours prior to departure. Additionally, all passengers must have a negative COVID-19 PCR test result before boarding, taken within 72 hours of departure.

“We don’t want to run the risk of crews getting stuck in a distant country if they test positive,” KLM said in a statement. “So from Friday, we will stop all intercontinental flights and all flights to European destinations where crews have to stay overnight.”

The country has also introduced strict measures on individual nations. The U.K., South Africa, and all of South America are banned from flying into the Netherlands for one month, beginning on Jan. 23.

Nations such as Mexico, Panama, Colombia, Brazil, and Argentina have been relying on KLM to get the vaccines to their people. Now, the airline says, it must halt these activities.

While the Dutch government is clearly taking strong steps to get a hold on the spread of COVID in the country, without exemptions for airline crew, it will be impossible for KLM to resume its important services. There’s no word on how long the flight shutdown could last.

“This is a very tough measure, but we are at a crossroads,” Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte said. “The British variant doesn’t leave us with an alternative.”

Rutte also said the country is proposing a strict curfew from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. each day. The curfew will need approval from a parliamentary vote expected to go ahead on Thursday and would only permit citizens to leave their homes for particular reasons, including medical emergencies or work. Those breaching the curfew could be fined 95 euro ($148).

On Dec. 29, the Dutch government announced that anyone entering the country from another Member State of the EU or Schengen Zone must first prove that they tested negative for COVID-19.

So far, there have been an estimated 13,000 coronavirus deaths in the Netherlands.

Bankrupt Indian airline Jet Airways said it had agreed to sell its assets in Netherlands to Dutch airline KLM. If the deal is finalised, it will only involve a sale of part of the company’s business and not impact the shareholding pattern, Jet said in a statement.

It did not detail the assets held in Netherlands. Once India’s biggest private carrier, the carrier stopped flying in April last year after running out of cash, leaving thousands without jobs and pushing up air fares across the country. It was admitted to bankruptcy court in June after its lenders, led by State Bank of India, failed to agree on a revival plan.

KLM, a part of Air France KLM, was once code share partners with the defunct airline and in the wake of Jet’s collapse had added flights to India.

Virgin Atlantic is now part of Bluebiz, a rewards programme for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME) which also includes KLM, Air France, Delta and Kenya Airways.

The scheme allows SME corporate customers to earn and spend ‘blue credits’ on flights with all partner airlines.

The credits are worth GBP 1 (USD 1.27) and can be spent on the full cost of future flights, including taxes and surcharges, with no limitations on booking classes.

Virgin said it is closing its existing SME programme Flying Co on 1 July, though any flights booked before that date will still earn Flying Co miles. Members can continue to spend their Flying Co miles until 31 December 2020.

“We have seen significant growth in the SME sector.”

Oliver Byers, Virgin Atlantic’s senior vice president for sales and customer loyalty, commented: “By joining Bluebiz, our customers will now be able to earn and burn across Virgin Atlantic as well as our partners KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Air France, Delta Air Lines and Kenya Airways. We’ve seen significant growth in the SME sector and can’t wait for our customers to be able to take advantage of this exciting loyalty programme.”

This week TD’s aviation round up returns with news of JAL’s Iron Man style upgrades, a selection of new destinations and the arrival of a Boeing 747 in a Dutch country garden…

First, news from the Middle East…

Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul,

Following the successful launch of spa’s daily flight between Abu Dhabi and Seoul eight years ago, the airline has decided to introduce the Airbus A380 on to the popular service.

The 486-seat aircraft will offer fliers the chance to experience the airlines luxury three room cabin, The Residence. The double-decker aircraft is comprised of 70 ‘Business Studios’ and 405 ‘Economy Smart Seats’.

Robin Kamark, chief commercial officer of Etihad Aviation Group, said: “Since launching our services to Seoul Incheon in December 2010, the route has proved tremendously successful and we have welcomed over 1.2 million guests on our flights to and from Korea since then. This reinforces the strong ties between our two countries, and the importance Etihad continues to place on the Korean market.

Kamark added: “The introduction of our award-winning Airbus A380 will provide our guests with the most revolutionary inflight experience. The Etihad A380 embodies our ‘Choose Well’ brand promise perfectly, offering every type of traveller a flying experience tailored to meet their requirements, and to capture their imagination.”

Silky smooth

Singapore Airlines’ regional subsidiary, SilkAir, has announced that it will be using Thompson Aero Seating for the upgrade of Business Class seats on its Boeing 737 MAX 8 fleet. The upgrades come as part of a series of cabin refurbishments, in line with the USD74 million (SD100 million) cabin overhaul required for the airlines smooth merger into its parent company.

The upgrades, which include new lie-flat seats in business class, and the installation of seat-back IFE systems in business class and economy class, will commence in May 2020. And will feature new lie-flat Business Class seats in a forward-facing staggered layout – in line with SIA’s regional Business Class offering on its Airbus A350-900 medium-haul and Boeing 787-10 fleets.

SilkAir currently has five 737 MAX 8s in its fleet with another 32 on order. The new seats will be retrofitted onto aircraft already in the fleet, and installed at the time of arrival in Singapore for aircraft not yet delivered.

Strong as iron

As the world moves forward through the Information Age, we have seen a spate of sci-fi style technology hit aviation, including AI powered chatbots, helping passengers select a flight; facial recognition to ease the woes of immigration and check-in or the return of supersonic jets.

However things just got super exciting for JAL ground support, with the arrival of strength enhancing exoskeletons.

Like Marvel’s Iron Man, support staff will be soon be have access to wearable robotic devices, from the boffins at Atoun Inc, in order to improve productivity and help reduce any physical stress while lugging heavy items around at work.

The tech, ATOUN MODEL Y, mainly supports the lower half of the body. JGS plans to use the gear when staff sorts baggage from the conveyor belt to the containers and when storing baggage in the cargo warehouse. Prior to the order, select staff from JGS tested the device and provided high reviews. Currently, JGS is considering rolling out the gear to regional airports throughout Japan.

JAL Ground Service (JGS) has placed an order for 20 Atoun Model Y devices, 10 of which will be put into use by staff Haneda airport with the remainder heading to Narita airport.

Gulf Air unveiled its first new destination for 2019,  Malaga – Costa del Sol in Spain. Running during the peak summer season, the service will operate from 14 June and until 15 September 2019.

Commenting on the new flight Gulf Air’s CEO, Krešimir Kučko, said: “In line with our five year strategy to become the airline of choice, and in light of the recent adaptation of the new boutique business model, we are adding a seasonal destination to cater to summer’s peak travel demand.”

Summer appeal

He also commented: “Malaga is known for its summer appeal as a holiday destination and is very popular to our customers in the region. Gulf Air is flying to a direct point in Spain for the first time and we are excited to offer this opportunity to everyone this summer.”

President of Costa del Sol Tourist Board and the Provincial Government of Malaga, Francisco Salado, welcomed the news.

“The new flight reinforces the importance of the objectives marked by the Tourist Board and its department of Connectivity & Emerging Markets. Gulf Air and Costa del Sol Tourist Board are already working on a co-marketing plan with the aim of promoting the destination and consolidating the flight frequency and future programming, based on a successful, ongoing, strategic alliance.”

Take my breath away

The former ‘City of Bangkok’ 747

Following nearly a week of travel a Boeing 747 arrived at the Corendon Village Hotel in Amsterdam yesterday, to take pride of place as a centre piece of the property’s garden, where it will begin its new life as a 5D simulator experience for guests.

The aircraft had to cross 17 ditches, one provincial road and even a highway, with the A9 successfully crossed late Friday night.

Visitors will be able to walk on, over or under the plane and visit places which are normally inaccessible to the public. They can visit the cargo area where the luggage is loaded, learn about the fuelling of the plane, and take a look in the kitchen of the business class and the cockpit on the upper deck. They can even do a wing walk over the 30m long wings.

Full glory

The aircraft in question, the former KLM aircraft ‘City of Bangkok’, first flew in 1989 when it took to the air following a blessing from nine Thai monks.

Corendon founder Atilay Uslu, said: “When I opened the curtains this morning, I saw her in full glory. I realized that after months of preparation we really succeeded in getting the plane to its final place with a lot of fitting and measuring. That kind of takes your breath away.”

Dutch airline KLM and tech partner Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) marked the quarter century of working together this week.

The airline, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, was the Indian company’s first customer when it opened for business in the Netherlands in 1993.

Since then the partnership has seen the two companies work together on numerous projects together including, BlueBot – the airline’s AI-powered social media chatbot, further enhanced with Google Assistant voice implementation; a smart digital queue, which allows all KLM customers to queue “digitally” in the airport lounge; a suite of booking and reservation management mobile apps – and the ability to collect boarding passes through  social media such as  WeChat, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

“A new standard for the airline industry”

Rajesh Gopinathan, CEO and MD of TCS, said: “We are proud to celebrate 25 years of partnership with KLM and congratulate them on the way they have used technology to innovate and further strengthen the customer experience. It’s an area where they have set a new standard for the airline industry. We look forward to continuing our work with them in this inspiring journey.”

Currently TCS is working with KLM to help it tap into additional ecosystems, enabling the company to partner with new travel, aviation and hospitality services. By leading KLM’s API strategy, TCS has implemented a connected API network with over 30 open APIs, offering 24/7 support and opening the door to a wide range of potential new customers for the airline.

“The best possible customer service now, and in the future”

Pieter Elbers, CEO of KLM, said: “The aviation industry is going through significant change as a result of digital technology and in order to ensure we can continue our success and remain an industry leader in customer satisfaction, we need to be constantly developing the ways in which we improve our services.

We believe that technological innovation plays a key role in this, and by working with TCS for the past 25 years we’ve been able to further strengthen our business to ensure we are set up to deliver the best possible customer service now, and in the future.”

AirlineRatings.com, the world’s only safety and product rating website, has announced its top 20 safest airlines for 2017 from the 425 it monitors, with Australian airline Qantas topping the list for the fourth year running. Qantas take-off

Qantas has a fatality free record in the jet era.

Making up the top 20 in alphabetical order are; Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airways, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Delta Air Lines, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Finnair, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airline System, Singapore Airlines, Swiss, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia.

AirlineRatings.com does not numerically rank its top 20 safest airlines but selects one overall standout airline.

Responding to public interest, the AirlineRatings.com editors also identified their top ten safest low-cost airlines.

These are (in alphabetical order): Aer Lingus, Flybe, HK Express, Jetblue, Jetstar Australia, Jetstar Asia, Thomas Cook, Virgin America, Vueling and Westjet.

In making its selections, AirlineRatings.com takes into account a range of factors that include; audits from aviation’s governing bodies and lead associations; government audits; airline’s crash and serious incident record; profitability and fleet age.

AirlineRating.com’s editorial team also examined each airline’s fleet history and its track record of initiating new safety technology to arrive at its top 20 safest airlines.

According to AirlineRatings.com editor Geoffrey Thomas, “our top 20 safest airlines are always at the forefront of safety innovation, operational excellence and the launching of more advanced aircraft like the A350, 787 and 777X.”

“While these airlines are always leaders in safety there was no question that Qantas still remains the leader in safety enhancements and operational excellence,” Thomas said.

“Over its 96-year history Qantas has amassed an amazing record of firsts in safety and operations and is accepted as the world’s most experienced airline.

“Qantas has been the lead airline in virtually every major operational safety advancement over the past 60 years.”

This agreement has enabled KLM to offer its customers daily services between Amsterdam and Malta. Air Malta’s flights to/from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport connect with KLM’s extensive global network. Customers of both airlines are benefitting from new services, such as through check-in for passengers with connections.

Commenting on this agreement Joseph Galea, Air Malta’s deputy chief commercial officer said: “We are very excited with this new codeshare agreement. Since July, when we started operating this codeshare, we have had a very good response from our mutual customers. Both Air Malta and KLM share the same service commitment towards their customers and this agreement was a natural step for us after launching the codeshare with Air France last year. This codeshare comes at a particular significant time for Air Malta when we are celebrating our 40 years of operations to Amsterdam Schiphol. Through this codeshare our customers are now in a position to benefit from access to many European and inter-continental destinations particularly North America, operated by KLM through Amsterdam.”

To mark the launch of the new route, the inaugural flight was welcomed to Belfast with a ceremonial water cannon, which was followed by a champagne evening reception at Ulster Museum.

The new flight from Belfast marks KLM’s 19th departure point in the UK and Ireland.

The water cannons saluted the inaugural flight arriving from Amsterdam at the start of the new KLM service, which is operating one flight to Amsterdam per day. The flights depart George Best Belfast City Airport at 11.15am and arrive in Amsterdam Airport Schiphol at 1.50pm, and a return leg departs Amsterdam at 10am and lands in Belfast at 10.40am.

KLM has been promoting the new route launch from Belfast for a number of weeks, with a series of exclusive hosted events and targeted campaigns. In April, KLM invited Belfast media and local competition winners on board a scenic flight over Belfast in the iconic KLM DC-3 plane, the world’s first commercial aircraft originally built in 1944, to experience the golden age of travel.

Air Serbia.

It has inked its newest codeshare deal with Aegean Airlines. Under the agreement, Aegean’s code will appear on Air Serbia’s flight between Belgrade and Athens, as well as its flights between Belgrade and Ljubljana, Sarajevo, Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Split.

Guests will also be able to travel on Air Serbia marketed flights to popular destinations beyond Athens such as Heraklion, Corfu, Rhodes and Larnaca, operated by Aegean. The first travel date under the agreement is set for May 14 and the codeshare flights to the three new destinations in Greece are open for sales. Codeshare flights on the remaining routes are subject to Cypriot, Croatian and Slovenian civil aviation authorities’ approval.

Also within Europe, Air Serbia has expanded its existing codeshare agreement with KLM. The airlines continue to codeshare on the Belgrade-Amsterdam route, operated by Air Serbia, with 10 flights per week, while Air Serbia has recently added its code to flights between Amsterdam and Manchester, operated double-daily by the Dutch carrier. Tickets have been available for sale since 17 March.

In addition, Air Serbia has expanded its codeshare agreement with its equity partner Etihad Airways, to include three routes in Saudi Arabia and one in Egypt. The Serbian national airline added its “JU” code to Etihad Airways’ flights from Abu Dhabi to Dammam, Jeddah and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, and to the Egyptian capital Cairo as of 10 May, enhancing connectivity between South East Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Daily connections are available from Belgrade via Abu Dhabi to Jeddah, Riyadh and Cairo. Connections to Dammam will be available five days per week, with no flights on Mondays and Fridays.

Dane Kondić, CEO of Air Serbia said: “Codeshare agreements are an important priority in our strategy of achieving efficient and effective network growth, offering our guests greater flexibility and choice while traveling under an Air Serbia flight code to key destinations around the world. Our strategy is also delivering sound financial results, as a growing proportion of our revenues are achieved through this and other forms of commercial cooperation. With these new developments, we are now enhancing our offering between Serbia and important business and leisure destinations in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.”

The group’s long haul capacity is up 0.3% compared with winter 2013-14. While services to the Middle East and Africa will be cut, capacity to Asia will rise 0.7% compared to last winter.

Taking advantage of the seasonal nature of certain destinations, Air France is increasing capacity during the peak season with an additional daily flight to Bangkok, and a fourth frequency to Kuala Lumpur. In China, capacity to Wuhan is being increased by one weekly frequency.

Looking at the airlines broader strategy, Air France-KLM has chosen to move upmarket with the progressive introduction of new products and services of the highest global standards.

On the long-haul network, 22 Boeing 747s have been equipped with KLM’s new World Business Class and 777-200s will be finished before the summer of 2015. The 777-300 fleet refit will follow on later, and by the end of 2016 about 80% of the KLM fleet will be done.

Air France continues to roll out its new Best cabins, with five Air France Boeing 777s to be ready by end-2014. Flights to Singapore and Jakarta have already been equipped with these brand new products. Services to Tokyo-Haneda and Shanghai will be added to this winter.

Air France-KLM’s financial performance improved in the second quarter of 2014, but could not prevent the company from slumping to a large first half loss.

The European airline group suffered a net loss of EUR614 million (US$824m) in the first six months of the year. This marked an improvement of EUR185m compared to the same period in 2013, but continues the trend of poor financial results experienced by the group in recent years. Air France-KLM posted a full-year net loss of EUR349m in 2013, EUR1.19bn in 2012 and EUR809m in 2011.

But the airline’s ‘Transform 2015’ restructuring and debt-reduction plan appears to making progress. In the second quarter of the year, unit costs were reduced 4.0% and revenues climbed 1.7%. This allowed operating profits to more than double to EUR238m.

And in the first half of 2014, the company’s operating losses were slashed from EUR448m to EUR207m.

“Despite a tough operating environment, the Air France-KLM Group maintained the momentum of recovery in the first half of 2014, by halving its operating loss,” said group chairman Alexandre de Juniac. “Quarter after quarter, our results are consistently reflecting the benefits of the productivity measures implemented under Transform 2015.”

In terms of operations, Air France-KLM’s traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), increased 2.5% in the first half of the year. This outpaced a 1.2% rise in seat capacity, allowing average cabin load factors to rise to 83.8%. Looking forward however, the company said the operating environment “remains tough”, with overcapacity on routes to North America and Asia impacting yields.

Through its Transform 2015 plan, Air France-KLM is aiming to achieve pre-tax profits of EUR2.2-2.3bn in 2014, and cut its net debt to EUR4.5bn in 2015.

KLM has introduced three new destinations to its network.

The Dutch carrier has restarted flights from Amsterdam to Turin for the first time in 10 years, with a twice daily service now operating on a 74 -passenger aircraft.

The launch comes after the success of Transavia’s flights to the destination and to complement partner Air France’s route to the Italian city, with KLM to focus on driving both business traffic and leisure for city and ski breaks.

Speaking at the launch in Turin which Travel Daily attended, KLM’s deputy CEO and chief operating officer Pieter Elbers said the airline expects to fly 20,000 people on the route in its first year.

Despite its short distance, he told Travel Daily that many Brits choose to transfer through Amsterdam onto European destinations.

“The UK is one of our important markets and one in five of our flights come or go from a destination in the UK,” he said. “Many passengers from the UK are connecting in Amsterdam to destinations throughout our network including those in Europe. Schiphol is preferred for connections.”

KLM has also launched daily flights from Amsterdam Schiphol to Bilbao and Zagreb.

Travel brands should use social media more outside of normal office hours if they want to gain an international audience, eDigitalResearch has said.

A new benchmark by the research company found many travel companies do not update accounts at weekends or during evenings despite customers needing help during all hours.

Derek Eccleston, commercial director at eDigitalResearch warned companies that social media is now seen as a valid customer service channel and could impact how they are perceived.

“If brands are serious about reaching out to large international audiences, as well as using platforms as a customer service tool, it is essential that their social media accounts are well maintained, including outside traditional office hours and at important weekend periods,” he explained.

The report found KLM is flying ahead of the travel industry when it comes to social media, with
1.7 million more Facebook fans than the second biggest travel company on the site, Air France.

Its popularity in the benchmark, that tracks performance on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ amongst others, comes after the airline famously introduced its ‘Meet and Seat’ service.

British Airways topped the Google+-specific ranking and American Airlines came out first on Twitter, while hotels performed well on Pinterest with Fairmont, Mr & Mrs Smith and Hotels.com the top three in the category.

Air France will add more flights to several destinations in Southeast Asia this summer.

The national carrier currently operates 18 weekly flights from Paris to four destinations in the region – Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. But this will increase significantly in the coming months, with the addition of extra flights to KL and Singapore, and the launch of a new extension to Jakarta.

Starting on 30 March 2014, Air France’s daily flight to Singapore will continue on to the Indonesian capital. The flight, operated using a 303-seat Boeing 777-300 aircraft, will leave Singapore at 1630 each day, arriving in Jakarta at 1720. The return service will then leave at 2010, getting back into Singapore at 2300.

This new service will complement the existing Amsterdam-Jakarta and Singapore-Bali flights operated by Air France’s partner, KLM.

And Air France will also expand its Paris-Singapore service this summer. From 17 June to 30 August 2014, the carrier will operate 10 weekly flights on the route. In addition to the existing daily B777-300 service to Singapore’s Changi Airport, Air France will also offer a second daily service every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, using a 247-seat Boeing 777-200 aircraft.

Flights to KL will rise to four times a week

The new thrice weekly 2320 departure from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport will complement the daily 1955 service. The three extra return flights will leave Changi at 2315.

And finally, Air France is also planning to raise the frequency of its Paris-KL route this summer. The airline only started the route in April 2013, but from 17 June 2014 the frequency will be increased from three to four flights per week. Operated using a 309-seat B777-200, flights will depart Paris every Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 1940, while the return leg will leave KL at 2310 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

In addition to Air France’s Southeast Asian operations, KLM also operates 41 weekly flights to six Southeast Asian destinations – Bali, Bangkok, Jakarta, KL, Manila and Singapore.

Superbreak has started to sell scheduled airline fares with its short break packages.

The tour operator’s new system means travel agents can book flights from various airports with airlines including KLM, CityJet, bmi Regional, Darwin Airline, Little Red and Eastern Airways.

This will allow passengers to travel into Europe or around the UK from airports such as Manston, Humberside, Durham Tees Valley, London City, Bristol, Cambridge and more.

Plans are also in place to expand its flight and hotel options in destinations further away including New York, Boston, Las Vegas and Dubai.

“We introduced our flight inclusive packages in December 2011 and they have proved popular, but this new system development has taken our transport offering into a new phase, with hundreds of new routes,” said Jane Atkins, sales director at Superbreak.

“It opens up so much more of the world and is fantastic for agents in the regions as they can now book hotels, flights from their local airport and ancillaries all in one go. I believe we will now offer agents a dynamic packaging system all in one place, using our ATOL and specialist knowledge,” she added.

KLM has launched a new service where people can buy onboard gifts for those flying on its services.

The service, named KLM Wannagives, will allow people to buy items such as a glass of champagne, an upgrade, sweets or duty-free goods which will be delivered gift wrapped while their loved one is on a flight.

It is available on its intercontinental routes and longer-distance European flights.

The giver can add a message on a card so they know who is from.

“On Facebook and Twitter we often received requests to surprise travellers for their honeymoon, birthday or anniversary. It was quite a logical step to facilitate this. Gift-giving above the clouds will make the journey a unique experience,” said Martijn van der Zee, SVP e-commerce at Air France KLM.

Air France KLM’s board said it is ‘very encouraged’ by its transformation plan after seeing an improvement in its operating result for Q3.

The group posted an operating result of EUR634 million in Q3 this year, up from EUR491m in 2012.

In the entire nine months up to 30 September its operating result went up from EUR183m in 2012 to EUR382m this year.

Cost reductions have helped the carrier increase its numbers, although chairman Alexandre de Juniac admitted difficulties in some parts of the business.

“The group continued to improve its operating result during this quarter. This is very encouraging since it shows that the roll-out of the measures in the Transform 2015 plan is proceeding in line with our expectation,” he explained. “However, it was considered necessary, last September, to supplement them with additional measures to strengthen the Group within the prevailing uncertain economic environment, particularly in the medium-haul and cargo sectors which are facing major difficulties.”

The codeshare agreement enables Air France to market flights under AF flight number to key Indian cities beyond Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai. The codeshare is open for sales from 19 June 2013.

Customers travelling from Europe to India will now be able to connect seamlessly with one ticket to three new Indian domestic destinations operated by Jet Airways, to Chennai via Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai, as well as to Kolkata and Hyderabad via Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Likewise, KLM will place its marketing code (KL) on Jet Airways’ domestic flights to four major cities in India beyond Delhi, allowing customers to travel seamlessly to Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai via Delhi.

Sudheer Raghavan, chief commercial officer of Jet Airways said, “The codeshare arrangements will allow our guests the convenience of enhanced connectivity from across Air France and KLM’s network via their European gateways in Paris and Amsterdam to key destinations across India.”

Dominique Patry, Air France’s vice president of international affairs and alliances said, “This new partnership between Air France-KLM and Jet Airways illustrates our Group’s strategic positioning that continuously strengthens our offer between Europe and the rest of the world by developing our network ourselves or, like today, with first class partners as Jet Airways. With the code-sharing agreement with Jet Airways, we are strengthening our presence in a key market.”

Air France-KLM offers 27 weekly long-haul flights between Europe and India.

Asian passengers flying to Europe with KLM will soon be offered a new business class experience, following the launch of the Dutch national carrier’s revamped World Business Class cabin.

Featuring a new flat-bed seat, which reclines the full 180⁰, KLM said the new cabin was designed to “accentuate the at-home feeling” for passengers. Designed by B/E Aerospace, the new Diamond Seat will offer a fully-horizontal sleeping position, as will as greater privacy with a partition between the seats and the aisle. The seat also includes a personal TV screen and more storage compartments. As a result of the redesign, the number of seats in the World Business Class cabin aboard a Boeing 747-400 will be reduced from 42 to 35.

KLM has also teamed up with leading Dutch designer Hella Jongerius to upgrade the look and feel of its business class cabin. In addition to the new flat-bed seats, the cabin’s interior features new carpeting, panel decorations, curtains, lighting, blankets, cushions and upholstery.

“It is truly remarkable that KLM is open to this kind of approach for its interior. Aircraft interiors have to meet an unbelievable range of technical requirements. We achieved this by simplifying the new seat, changing its colour and upholstering it with high-quality textiles,” said Jongerius.

First to be fitted with the new cabin products will be KLM’s fleet of 22 B747-400s, with the first flight featuring the new World Business Class expected to take-off in July 2013. The airline will then start work on its 15 B777-200s.

KLM makes checks on its biofuel engine

KLM has commenced its first flight schedule using biofuel between Amsterdam Schiphol and New York JFK.

Weekly services using the cooking oil fuel started last week and will operate every Thursday on a Boeing 777-200.

The carrier is the first to launch a regular service using sustainable fuel although other airlines are developing their own to reduce costs and help save the environment.

“I am proud that KLM is once again demonstrating its leading role in developing sustainable biofuel. For eight years in a row, KLM, together with Air France, has been sector leader on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index,” said Camiel Eurlings, managing director of KLM. “Alongside this biofuel series we are starting a study to further identify sustainability gains in fuel, weight and CO2 reduction throughout the entire flight process. We are striving to achieve the ‘optimal flight’ together with research institutes, suppliers, airports, and air traffic control.”

KLM had previously operated the longest biofuel flight from Amsterdam to Rio de Janeiro in June 2012.

British Airways has become the latest airline to announced new “hand baggage only” fares on selected routes as traditional European airlines battle it out with low-cost carriers.

BA’s new fares are available on its Gatwick routes to Amsterdam, Dubrovnik, Jersey, Tunis and Turin and allow passengers to take on a case plus a handbag or laptop bag.

It comes following the success of carriers like easyJet and Ryanair that have snatched some of the weekend city break and short-haul business market by charging for checked baggage, therefore encouraging hand baggage only.

With these travellers focused on price and convenience, airlines such as BA are now adopting a similar approach and are releasing ‘no-frills’ fares in an attempt to claim back passengers.

KLM has too announced it will now ask travellers to check in baggage for European flights in its new fares.

The additional benefit of these is the airlines can offer what appears at first as a cheaper starting price.

Although as Peter Simpson, BA’s director at Gatwick says: “The introduction of our hand baggage only fare is all about giving our customers more freedom to choose the kind of flying they want. Many British Airways customers on Gatwick short-haul breaks choose not to check in a bag as they’re already taking advantage of our generous two-bag hand luggage policy. Those who still want to check in a bag will simply pay the same price they do now”.

Perhaps the airlines are hoping the hand luggage-only fares will encourage customers to purchase higher class tickets, as these will continue to include baggage and other benefits.

Clearly the advantage for carriers such as BA and KLM is the service comparison to the low-cost alternative but time will tell as to whether this more flexible option is enough to bring back those now accustomed to no frills conditions, especially now they are allocated seats.

KLM has continued its regional expansion across the UK with new flights between Manston, Kent and Amsterdam.

The carrier will launch twice daily flights from 2 April onboard a Fokker 70 aircraft with business and economy cabins. The hour-long flight is the first international departure from Manston and will be used for on-going connections into the Americas, Asia and Africa.

“This step is consistent of our strategy to provide provincial departures and hope to develop what we have done in Norwich,” Henri Hourclade, general manager UK & Ireland at Air France/KLM told Travel Daily. “Kent is a key region with a good catchment area that is close to the airport and it is very strategically placed; we are very confident that the experience can work here.”

This ‘experience’ focuses on airports within an hour’s drive, hassle-free airports and cheaper airport parking, which has proved so popular at Norwich that it will soon boost its services to Schiphol to four times a day. Alongside its flights with AirFrance and codeshare with flybe KLM offers flights from more than 20 UK airports and it is the easy access and on-going destinations which have made services popular with both leisure and business sectors.

“Schipol is a familiar airport to British travellers and is a real asset for us as a hub airport,” said Hourclade. “The main challenge is to raise awareness that the product exists.”

Of its connecting flights Hourclade said North American routes, Dubai and Bangkok continue to be popular with Brits, while its Chinese and south east Asia (Kuala Lumpur, Philippines) routes are developing fast particularly as Heathrow fails to keep up with direct routes.

On the other hand, Hourclade said KLM has now placed Manston on the global map and is positive the connection will boost inbound tourism into Kent.

“Bristol and our points in Scotland have seen a boost in inbound tourism from our flights and Kent has lots to offer so there is potential there,” he added.

Round-up of airline news from this morning including Air France strikes and Kingfisher’s licence suspension.

Air France braces for strike

Air France has said it will aim to “limit the impact of disruption” after one of its unions decided to go on strike this week. The General Confederation of Labour (CGT) union has said it will down tools on Friday 26 October in protest against the airline’s restructuring plans. The airline said it “expects to carry all its passengers to their final destination”, while any flight disruptions should be limited to “a few delays”.

Kingfisher license suspended

Troubled Indian carrier Kingfisher Airlines has had its operating permit suspended. The airline has been grounded for several weeks due to a strike over unpaid salaries, and officials with India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation have now suspended its license until it presents a “viable revival plan”. Kingfisher has never made a profit in its history, and is currently seeking overseas investment to secure its future. Even prior to the strike, the airline was operating a severely reduced service.

American posts quarterly loss

American Airlines has posted a US$238 million net loss for the third quarter ending 30 September 2012. The airline, which is currently restructuring following its bankruptcy protection filing late last year, saw a slight 0.8% rise in revenues, to US$6.43 billion, which helped it generate an operating profit of US$51m. The airline was hit by reorganization costs and special charges however, which caused the net loss to widen year-on-year.

KLM Economy Comfort goes on sale

KLM has released bookings for its Economy Comfort products on flights within Europe. The flights with the new product are available from 1 December onboard Boeing 737 aircraft. The seats are said to offer nine centimetres more legroom and a 40% more recline.  The airline is also looking into putting the seats on its Cityhopper fleet.

PhoCusWright’s ‘Social Media in Travel 2012’ study, created in partnership with Circos Brand Karma and Travelport,  found that more than three quarters of travellers turn to social networks to find some kind of shopping deal, and that 30% specifically seek out travel-related deals. However, travel suppliers that have implemented booking tools, widgets or full-fledged booking engines within Facebook have so far reported mixed results, citing a range of challenges. According to the study, while internet users are accustomed to using Facebook to share their travel photos and stories, they do not appear to engage in social networks with the primary intent of purchasing travel, in the same way they do with travel sites.

“Everybody and their grandma may be on Facebook, but for many in the travel industry, that has not made social into a reliably actionable and demonstrably profitable marketing medium,” says Douglas Quinby, Senior Director of Research at PhoCusWright. “The potential of social for travel may lie less in any one platform and more in the ecosystem of social data to socialise a traveller’s experience across a variety of online travel websites and mobile applications.”

Companies that have so far launched Facebook booking options include Best Western, Malaysia Airlines and KLM. The airline booking engines, such as KLM’s ‘Meet & Seat’ enable Facebook ‘friends’ to share booking profiles, make contact with fellow passengers, and even select a seat next to their social media friend.

Air France KLM has revealed that it is to commence a GBP1 million autumn/winter advertising campaign that will target six of the UK’s biggest regions.

The Pack&Go initiative will focus on popular business and leisure routes during what has typically been known as the most lucrative booking period for long haul. The scheme will be focused on London, Scotland, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol and Newcastle.

The campaign will start today (3 September) with KLM adverts appearing on one third of all London buses, 140 outdoor positions in the other locations and a targeted print and online media programme.

“The look and feel of our tactical Pack&GO campaign makes the KLM brand stand out in a hugely competitive market,” said Vincent Kas, commercial director for Air France KLM UK and Ireland. “Having a presence on more than one third of London’s double deckers will give us high visibility in the critical London market and the use of mobile banner ads for the first time is particularly relevant for the frequent flyer market.”

The campaign will also include an e-mail newsletter sent out to the company’s 890,000 strong customer base and a push on social media channels.

KLM flies a Boeing 777 to KL

KLM operated the longest biofuel flight so far today, flying from Amsterdam to Rio de Janeiro.

The Boeing 777-300 made the journey partially powered by a sustainable fuel made from cooking oil, developed by SkyNRG. The flight to Rio was intended to coincide with the Rio+20 sustainable development conference being hosted in the Brazilian city, and passengers onboard the aircraft included the Netherlands’ State Secretary of Infrastructure & the Environment, Joop Atsma.

“The KLM biofuel programme enables companies to join KLM and SkyNRG to demonstrate the leading position they occupy on sustainability. I call upon Dutch businesses to join in to accelerate the development of biofuels and to stimulate a sustainable economy. I will do everything in my power to ensure that from 2013 Dutch officials on government business will travel as much as possible on biofuel flights, including the government’s own aircraft,” Atsma said.

KLM has announced plans to add more flights to its Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur route.

From 29 October 2012, the Dutch airline will add three weekly flights to the Malaysian capital, taking its total frequency on the route to 10 weekly services. The extra flights will depart Amsterdam’s Schiphol International Airport on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 1235, arriving into Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 0720 the following day. The return services will depart KLIA at 0950 every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, getting back into Amsterdam at 1520.

From KL, KLM passengers will be able to connect to Malaysia Airlines’ flights to Australia, which KLM operates in a codeshare arrangement with the Malaysian national carrier, and Tom Reeves, Air France-KLM’s Regional Manager for Australia & New Zealand said the new flights would provide a boost to Australian travellers.

“By introducing additional flights, KLM will give Australian business and leisure travellers more opportunities to connect to our worldwide network,” said Reeves. “Flying with our codeshare partner Malaysia Airlines, passengers can travel from five major Australian cities – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth – to Kuala Lumpur, where they can connect with our onward flights.”

KLM operates either a Boeing 777-200 or a B747-400 aircraft between Amsterdam and KL.
