Korean Air continues to soar high, not only in the skies but also in their efforts to make the world a better place. The airline has taken a thoughtful step towards sustainability and community welfare. The carrier breathed new life into used pilot and cabin crew uniforms by upcycling them into 500 first aid pouches. The compassionate creations were then generously donated to the Seoul Gangseo Senior Welfare Center and Incheon Yongyu Elementary School.

What makes this initiative even more heartwarming is that the first aid kits were stocked with essential medicines, all funded by donations from Korean Air’s dedicated employees. Approximately KRW 5 million was collectively contributed to acquire a range of vital medications, including fever reducers and cold remedies, ensuring the pouches are well-prepared to assist those in need.

Typically, when crew uniforms reach the end of their life cycle, they are disposed of. However, Korean Air has given a meaningful purpose to these retired uniforms by transforming them into upcycled first aid pouches, providing invaluable support to the local community.

This noble endeavor is just one of many sustainable projects undertaken by Korean Air as part of their commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Earlier this year, they introduced metallic name tags and golf ball markers upcycled from retired Boeing 777 aircraft. Additionally, they crafted cosmetic pouches from retired cabin life vests and even volunteered their time to create hot water bottle pouches using end-of-cycle cabin blankets, which were also donated to the local community.

Korean Air will fly to Brisbane five times a week, with Korean visitors expected to spend more than $120 million annually in Queensland.

The additional 89,000 inbound seats will support 1,230 direct and indirect jobs in Queensland each year.

“South Korea is an economic powerhouse, this state’s third largest trading market, and a major technology partner in Queensland’s new energy economy,” said Brisbane Airport Corporation CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff.

The reinstatement of permanent flights “reopens the floodgates for large-scale South Korean tourism to Queensland, making it easier for students to study here and their families to visit,” he added.

The return flight was made possible by the Attracting Aviation Investment Fund in Queensland, a partnership between Brisbane Airport Corporation and the Queensland Government.

Stirling Hinchliffe, Queensland Tourism Minister, hailed Korean Air’s return to Queensland skies.

“The direct flights from Seoul-Incheon Airport to Brisbane by Korean Air are critical to Queensland’s post-pandemic international visitor recovery,” Hinchliffe said.

“Tourism operators are excited to welcome back Korean visitors to share Queensland’s wonderful lifestyle and our one-of-a-kind, world-class visitor experiences.”The resumption of efficient, direct services from Seoul is good news for leisure travellers, working vacationers, and the expanding population of Korean students who have chosen Queensland as their preferred study place.”

Mr Jason Jeong, Korean Air’s Regional Manager for Australia, welcomed the resumption of service as the airline prepared to mark the 30th anniversary of operations in Brisbane.

“We are eager to welcome back Queenslanders on our flights.” “I must thank the Queensland Government and Brisbane Airport Corporation for their assistance in relaunching Korean Air services,” Jeong said.

“Queenslanders will now enjoy Korean Air’s five weekly services to Seoul and beyond to many exciting destinations once again.”

Korean Air is one of the world’s major air cargo carriers. The Boeing 777 flying the route will be welcomed by Queensland’s exporters, who rely on secure and dependable air cargo services to ship to markets worldwide, not only the Korean market.

Korean Air will showcase a new Korean-style vegan meal, which is inspired from Korean traditional cuisine, as an inflight meal option starting from March.

To accommodate the growing vegan population, Korean Air has introduced a Korean-style vegan meal option, an eco-friendly meal that can also help reduce carbon emissions.

Inspired by traditional temple cuisine, the airline’s new Korean vegan meals are made using a variety of fresh vegetables and seasonal ingredients, bringing passengers an appetizing meal full of natural flavors. Dishes such as steamed barley rice with burdock, roasted shiitake mushrooms, mung bean jelly salad and roasted tofu with plum salsa sauce can be enjoyed by passengers in all classes, while ginkgo nut porridge and roasted yam with soybean paste will be available for Prestige and First class passengers. Different types of Korean vegan dishes will be served depending on the route and season.

Korean Air currently provides six types of vegetarian meal options: vegan, lacto-ovo vegetarian, East Asian vegetarian, Hindu vegetarian, Jain vegetarian and raw vegetarian.

Korean vegan meals will be available to pre-order on all international routes departing from Korea in March. Customers may pre order meals through Korean Air’s website, mobile application or service center up to 24 hours prior to their flight’s departure.

Korean Air will also introduce a new selection of carefully curated wines onboard starting from next month. In collaboration with Marc Almert, who was named “World’s Best Sommelier 2019” by the International Sommelier Association, the airline presented 52 newly-selected inflight wines in October last year. The airline’s wine selection, which has formerly been composed mostly of traditional French wines, has expanded to include diverse wines from other European countries and continents. The new selection will be first offered on the airline’s Los Angeles, New York and Paris routes, and will be gradually added to all routes within the year.

Korean Air will continue to introduce a variety of meal options, including Korean cuisine, to provide passengers with a rich inflight experience.

One of the most populous and technologically advanced cities of the world – monuments, modern architecture, shopping, beautiful panoramas, cultural events, and great food – Seoul has it all. From 27 March 2023, Prague Airport will once again offer a direct connection with Asia, provided by Korean Air. This regular service was last in operation in March 2020.

The resumption of the long-haul connection is one of the top priorities for Jiří Pos, Chairman of the Prague Airport Board of Directors: “This is an important milestone not only on the way to resuming operations and returning to the 2019 figures, but also in terms of building a network of direct routes to Asia. Korea is one of the markets with the highest demand within the Asian region,” Mr. Pos said.

“At the centre of the airline’s Central European network, Prague is a flagship destination that boasts centuries of rich history and cultural heritage. The service resumption will give us an opportunity to pick up where we left off in fostering active exchanges between the two countries.” Mr. Park Jeong Soo, Managing Vice President and Head of Passenger Network, noted.

Demand-pending Frequency Increases

Initially, the route will be operated three times a week, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with the option of increasing the frequency to four weekly flights during the summer season based on the demand trends and tendencies. Passengers will fly aboard Boeing 777-300ERs aircraft with 291 seats (64 in Business Class, 227 in Economy Class). The route will ensure the currently missing capacities are significantly boosted – not only to Korea, but also, thanks to connecting flights from Seoul, to other destinations in Asia with a traditionally strong demand, for example, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, and even Indonesia or Australia.

According to data from the Czechtourism agency and its director Jan Herget, almost 400 thousand Korean tourists visited the Czech Republic in 2019. “We firmly believe that thanks to the direct route and the gradual opening of Asian markets after the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be a recovery of tourism between Korea and the Czech Republic, and a gradual return to the 2019 numbers. While in 2019, we recorded 387 thousand arrivals of tourists from the Republic of Korea, a year later, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, only 42 thousand Koreans arrived. In 2021, the number dropped even more, to eight thousand visitors. Tourists from Asia are key for the Czech tourism industry for their high creditworthiness. The average daily spending is around four thousand crowns,” Mr. Herget added.

“The connection between Prague and Seoul is the result of the coordinated activities of all key stakeholders, for which we are very happy, because it will bring travellers from Asia, who are currently absent in the city, back to Prague. In 2019, more than 270 thousand tourists from South Korea visited the capital. Last year, we have recorded less than 40 thousand,” František Cipro, Chairman of the Prague City Tourism Board of Directors, commented.

Successful Pre-Covid Route

In 2019, the connection from Prague to Seoul was very successful. In total, over 190 thousand passengers travelled between Prague and Seoul in both directions throughout the year.

In his New Year’s address to the Korean Air team, Korean Air’s Chairman and CEO, Walter Cho, emphasized the importance of gaining a competitive edge as the aviation industry normalizes post-COVID. Cho also confirmed the company’s plans to successfully complete the acquisition of Asiana Airlines in 2023.
“We’ve seen a glimpse of normalization and the airports are beginning to bustle with passengers we have missed dearly. We also found hope and pleasure in returning to work to see our colleagues,” shared Walter Cho in his New Year’s message that was posted on the company’s employee site on January 2.

Cho urged the team to more fully understand customers’ needs and keep up with the market demands. “We need to identify in advance our customers’ preferred destinations and services, and analyze when and where to add operations as well as which services to enhance.”

Amidst growing economic uncertainties, Cho assured that the airline is confident and ready to move forward. “There have been numerous challenges on our way, but we’ve always overcome and leveraged them to create new opportunities. We’re armed with more than half a century of experience and will use this insight to address our future.”

Cho reiterated, “2023 is a pivotal year for completing the huge task of closing our acquisition of Asiana Airlines. We are in the last stage with the remaining overseas competition authorities reviewing the merger.” He thanked the Korean Air team for their patience and asked them to do their part going forward as one family.

Cho also emphasized Korean Air’s environment, social and governance (ESG) duties as a responsible member of society. “ESG management is no longer a choice, but mandatory to the survival of our future,” he said. “We’ve always been committed to the well-being of our society. Introducing eco-friendly aircraft, reducing waste through increased in-cabin recycling, and operating an ESG committee to improve governance are all part of our efforts to support our social responsibility. We will not stop here, but continue to make Korean Air a responsible company that fulfills its corporate responsibilities and is beloved by its customers.”

Finally, Cho said, “While the future demands more wisdom from us than ever, we will continue on our path as we always have. We are the country’s top aviation experts and know how to give our customers around the globe the ultimate travel experience.”

Korean Air has selected Amadeus Customer Loyalty Suite to manage its lifestyle loyalty programme, Skypass. Skypass is one of the largest and most recognised frequent flyer programmes in Asia Pacific, in operation for more than 35 years. To achieve its business objectives, Korean Air was looking for a high-performing loyalty system and Amadeus is the best fit to help Skypass identify and engage with its customers and grow its membership base.

“Of all the partners we considered, we found Amadeus to be the most trustworthy, not only in its willingness to collaborate, but also in its technical abilities. We will be able to seamlessly integrate our existing systems – and those of our partners too, whether it’s other airlines, alliances, or service providers. This will enable us to differentiate Korean Air’s loyalty program and boost engagement with our passengers,” says Young Soo Yoo, Managing Vice President & Head of Loyalty, Korean Air.

“We are pleased that Korean Air has decided to sign up for Amadeus Customer Loyalty Suite. As one of the top airline loyalty programs in the world, it is a key milestone to have the Skypass program onboard on our next generation loyalty solutions. Korean Air will be able to maintain a competitive edge with a highly configurable loyalty system providing a detailed view of customer insights and intelligence” says Javier Laforgue, Executive Vice President, Travel Unit & Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Amadeus.

The data generated by loyalty programmes is one of the most comprehensive sets of consumer data airlines have access to. The ability to seamlessly integrate that data with airline systems such as the Altea Passenger Service System means loyalty solutions can work efficiently with retailing and digital solutions. This allows travelers a greater level of decision making – for instance in purchasing a more expensive fare thanks to a preferable mile earned offer.

With Amadeus Customer Loyalty Suite fully integrated into the booking experience, Skypass members can book both reward tickets and ancillaries in miles as well as commercial tickets with a combination of both currencies.

Budapest Airport has welcomed the arrival of its latest new airline, Korean Air, the flag carrier of South Korea. The addition of the airline’s twice-weekly service to Seoul Incheon will serve as an important enhancement to the Hungarian economy and tourism. Operated by Korean Air’s 269-seat B787 Dreamliner, the launch of the airport’s second connection to Seoul sees Budapest now offer 2,000 weekly seats between the two capital cities during W22, with future frequencies planned.

Speaking at the launch Balázs Bogáts, head of airline development, Budapest Airport said: “The arrival of Korean Air further establishes the cooperation and strong relations between South Korea and Budapest. Having recorded four times as many South Korean visitors during the first five months of 2022 when compared to the same period of last year, we expect this route to be in high demand from both tourist and business perspectives.”

Park Jeong Soo, managing vice president and head of passenger network, Korean Air says: “Korean Air’s inaugural flight to Budapest will allow our customers to experience and appreciate the city’s beautiful nature and diverse attractions. Korean Air will continue to foster Budapest as a strategic destination in Eastern Europe, and will closely cooperate with the Hungarian Government and Budapest Airport to vitalise the Incheon-Budapest route.” Consistently welcoming more than one million passengers every month since May, Budapest Airport has today added its 10th new route of 2022.

After consulting with relevant stakeholders, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has decided to approve Korean Air’s acquisition of Asiana Airlines.

Even though Korean Air and Asiana are the only carriers offering direct flights between Sydney and Seoul, the ACCC has said that Qantas and Jetstar will soon launch services on this route, introducing effective competition.

ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb stated that the availability of both full-service and low-cost airlines by the Qantas Group on the Sydney–Seoul route indicates that effective competition is likely to exist.

Korean Air anticipates that permission from the Australian competition authorities will facilitate and expedite the remaining regulatory processes.

Korean Air has gotten clearance from Korea, Turkey, Taiwan, and Vietnam after submitting business combination reports to the nine nations that need reporting on January 14, 2021. Regarding company mergers and acquisitions, the Thailand Competition Commission has said that no formal report has to be filed.

Korean Air has also been given the all-clear by Singapore and Malaysia, both of which have a more subjective approach to reporting. The business merger report was determined to be unnecessary by the Philippines.

Korean Air will maintain open lines of communication and cooperation with the United States, European Union, China, and Japan, as well as the United Kingdom, where reporting is discretionary, in order to complete the acquisition process.

Korean Air has announced the end of the long-haul quad-jet era, with the retirement of the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8.

Korean Air has joined the growing list of airlines planning to retire the Airbus A380, and the carrier’s Boeing 747-8 fleet is also on the chopping block.

The South Korean flag carrier intends to retire its superjumbos within the next five years, and this includes not only the ten A380s owned by Korean Air but also the six acquired in the $2.2 billion takeovers of rival Asiana Airlines.

Asiana’s A380 fleet will be merged with Korean Air’s by 2024, but the superjumbos will be retired within two years.

“The A380s will leave Korean Air’s fleet within five years,” confirmed Korean Air CEO Walter Cho last week to industry publication FlightGlobal.

Korean Airlines was the seventh airline to order the double-decker jet, with the first flight taking place in 2011.

Aside from a comfortable first-class lounge and a large business-class cocktail bar, the carrier’s own unique touch was a duty-free boutique at the back of the lower deck.

The showcase, which was lined with high-end cosmetics, perfumes, and liquor to catch the eye and pry open the wallet or purse, allowed passengers to browse actual items rather than being limited to leafing through a brochure.

Each of the bottles on display had a heavy-duty magnet on the bottom to keep it in place during turbulence, though the alcohol was also stowed during taxi, take-off, and landing.

Korean Air correctly bet that revenue from increased duty-free sales would more than offset the loss of two rows of economy seating that the boutique replaced, keeping it open for the duration of each flight and staffed by a full-time sales assistant.

But, while Korean Air’s more modern Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental will temporarily become the SkyTeam member’s long-range flagship after the A380 is retired, “the Boeing 747-8I fleet will also follow suit within ten years,” says CEO Cho.

The future of Korean Air will be dominated by twin-engine jets such as the Boeing 777-300ER and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with the possibility of the Boeing 777-9 joining the family.

“I believe the Boeing 777 is one of the most successful aircraft in aviation history,” Cho said. “If asked, I would say the B777-300ER is my favourite model.”

“While I haven’t ruled out the Boeing 777X, there are some points that still need verification. I may consider it after that, but I don’t think we’ll have a large demand for new aircraft for some time as we already have a significant number of aircraft in operation or on order.”

Korean Air has been announced the winner of one of the most prestigious honours in the aviation industry: Air Transport World’s (ATW) 2021 Airline of the Year.

Launched in 1974, ATW’s annual Airline Industry Achievement Awards are compared to the Academy Awards of the airline industry. This year’s awards ceremony will be held in Boston, U.S., on October 5, 2021.

When making its decision, ATW’s global judging panel of editors and analysts cited, “the company’s excellent leadership, its ability to remain operationally profitable through the industry’s worst-ever crisis, its strong commitment to health safety…customer service excellence, and its remarkable relationship with employees.” The judges also noted the airline’s “transformational strategic deal to incorporate Asiana and create a larger, more global flagship carrier.”

“We are so honoured to receive ATW’s prestigious Airline of the Year award. This award is a tribute to our employees for their dedication, sacrifices and loyalty, especially during the tumultuous past year,” said Walter Cho, Chairman and CEO of Korean Air. “I’m so grateful and proud of our team. We have come a long way and are committed to being a smart, resilient and sustainable respected leader in the global aviation industry. We will continue to deliver excellence in flight as we connect the global community. We thank ATW for this award as well as for its continued industry leadership.”

ATW Editor-in-Chief Karen Walker said, “Korean Air and its team of dedicated employees have truly demonstrated excellence across the board. We are delighted for them and offer sincere congratulations.”

This year’s award is even more meaningful to Korean Air, as the global industry has been suffering from the unprecedented crisis caused by COVID-19.

Korean Air is one of few airlines, if not the only one, in the world recording operating profits for four consecutive quarters from the second quarter of 2020 to the first quarter of 2021. The airline made the strategic decision to focus on the cargo business and maximize cargo operations through measures such as converting passenger jets into freighters.

Meanwhile, Korean Air took the bold step to acquire Asiana Airlines, the biggest deal in the global aviation industry during the pandemic.

The airline also quickly responded to the pandemic with its Care First program, launched to deliver the highest quality of protection to customers throughout the entire passenger journey through enhanced cleanliness and safety protocols. In recognition of its strong safety and hygiene measures, the carrier received a 5-star safety rating from Skytrax, one of only a few global airlines to achieve such recognition.

Korean Air plans to continue to strengthen its position in the global aviation industry and aims to become one of the world’s top 10 airlines after successfully acquiring and integrating Asiana Airlines.

Korean Air has been certified as a 5-star COVID-safe airline by Skytrax, becoming one of a few global airlines to achieve recognition for COVID-19 safety standards.

Since last year, Skytrax has conducted the ‘COVID-19 airline safety ratings’ through an audit that evaluates the safety and hygiene protocols introduced by airlines during the coronavirus pandemic. The 5-star rating, the highest level, recognizes the airline’s world-best quality to assure customers a safe air travel experience.

In 2020, Korean Air was named as a 5-star airline in Skytrax’s ‘World Airline Star Rating’ for the quality of its airport and onboard product and staff service. The airline’s consecutive ‘5-star’ certifications reflect its excellence in both customer service and COVID-19 safety standards.

Korean Air’s COVID-19 5-star certification was attributed to the airline’s comprehensive efforts in its ‘Care First’ program that was introduced in August last year.

Keehong WOO, Korean Air’s president said: “Korean Air is proud and honoured to be named a 5-star airline for Skytrax COVID-19 Safety Rating. This special category recognizes an airline’s safety, cleanliness, and hygiene efforts to prevent further spread of the disease. Korean Air’s Care First program does just that”.

Care First has strengthened our communication with passengers as well as applied multiple layers of protection for our crews and customers. I gratefully accept this award on behalf of all our employees, many of whom are serving on the frontlines of this pandemic. Their unwavering support and loyalty are ensuring Korean Air’s success.”

Korean Air created a Care First page on its website to actively communicate its activities for passengers’ health such as in-flight cleanliness, touchless check-in, checking passengers’ temperatures, social distancing and enhancing in-flight meal hygiene.

The airline also provides further details of the Care First program and safety of the air travel through a safety information video on its website, social channels, and inflight entertainment.

A Care First kit, a set of hygiene products consisting of a facial mask, hand sanitiser, and information sheet, is also available upon request at all Korean Air’s check-in counters and boarding gates.

Korean Air customers will be among the first in the world to have access to an IATA app that provides a secure system to manage their COVID-19 testing or vaccination information digitally.

Korean Air will test the digital travel pass developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to prepare the world for safe and convenient air travel in the post-COVID era. The trial is planned for the airline’s Incheon-Los Angeles KE011 flight in May after an internal test in April.

The IATA Travel Pass can show a passenger’s COVID-19 test results through a mobile phone application. The travel pass will be further developed to include proof of vaccination.

As COVID-19 vaccinations become widely available and travel demand recovers, COVID-19 vaccination and test results will be critical. However, it is difficult for governments to validate paper vaccination certifications or COVID-19 test results, and immigration procedures are expected to take longer. There is also the possibility of paper certificates being forged.

The IATA Travel Pass has been developed not only to solve such problems but also to encourage safe travel between countries by standardizing health verification through a credible platform. IATA has been working closely with governments to gain their support for the travel pass initiative.

“We believe the digital travel pass will improve the customer experience for passengers as they can share health information in a convenient and secure manner, and save processing time at the airports,” said Korean Air’s chief customer service officer, Seungbum Lee. “Korean Air will continue its efforts to provide a safe and seamless travel experience through initiatives such as the travel pass.”

“Partnering with Korean Air to trial IATA Travel Pass is an important milestone towards giving governments the confidence to restart the industry. Jointly we will help demonstrate that aviation has developed a solution to ensure that passengers are meeting travel requirements,” said Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President, Airport, Passenger, Cargo and Security.

Korean Air plans to trial the IATA Travel Pass in May on the airline’s Incheon-Los Angeles KE011 flight. As part of the goal to “Test & Fly,” passengers can take a COVID-19 antigen test at the Incheon Airport’s testing centre, and receive test results within an hour on the Travel Pass mobile app, which passengers need to install in advance.

Korean Air will cooperate with IATA to smoothly implement the IATA Travel Pass while continuing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through its safety and cleanliness program “CARE FIRST,” which includes frequent and thorough disinfection of aircraft, fever checks and minimal contact between passengers and employees.

South Korean flag carrier Korean Air said today it will buy out its smaller troubled rival Asiana Airlines in a USD 1.6 billion deal as it looks to consolidate with the coronavirus pandemic sending shockwaves through the global aviation sector.

Worldwide travel restrictions imposed to prevent the disease from spreading have wreaked havoc on the airline industry, hammering Asiana, which was already in trouble. “The main reason behind Korean Air’s decision to acquire Asiana Airlines at this time is to stabilise the Korean aviation industry, which is suffering from the Covid-19 pandemic,” Korean Air said in a statement.

“Once Korean Air completes its acquisition of Asiana Airlines, the airline is expected to be ranked as one of the top 10 airlines in the world,” it added. The deal also includes Asiana’s affiliates, including low-cost carriers Air Seoul and Air Busan.

“Considering that Korean Air’s financial status could also be endangered if the Covid-19 situation is prolonged, it is inevitable to restructure the domestic aviation market to enhance its competitiveness and minimize the injection of public funds,” the Korean Air statement stated.

Asiana has long been plagued by financial problems prompting parent company Kumho Industrial to put its 31% stake up for sale last year as it came under pressure from its creditors. A previous deal for a South Korean builder, HDC Hyundai Developer, to acquire Asiana collapsed in September as the pandemic tore through the aviation industry.

Korean Air has launched a COVID-19 vaccine transport task force to prepare for the safe and swift transport of the vaccine once it becomes available.

Transporting vaccines is a very delicate and challenging process requiring specialized storage facilities and equipment. Vaccines generally need to be stored at low temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius whereas some types require temperatures as low as -70 degrees Celsius.

Korean Air’s cargo terminal at Incheon International Airport has 1,292 sqm of cold storage that can accommodate 100 tons of freight. In addition, to expand its operations, the airline plans to use the 2,533 sqm Cool Cargo Center next to Incheon International Airport Terminal 2 when it opens next year.

Korean Air has considerable experience delivering specialized and emergency freight during the COVID-19 pandemic including medical equipment and personal protection equipment (PPE). In April, the airline was recognized for its swift delivery of half a million COVID-19 test kits to Baltimore-Washington International Airport in Maryland, US, an airport it had never visited before.

Because of the carrier’s expertise in managing and transporting pharmaceuticals, Korean Air has been certified by IATA’s Center of Excellence for Independent Validators on Pharmaceutical Handling (CEIV Pharma).

IATA recently announced that 8,000 Boeing 747s will be needed to transport one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for every person in the world. Air transport will be crucial and in high demand for the vaccine’s safe and timely distribution.

“Korean Air’s task force is reviewing all aspects concerning the vaccine’s transport, and will develop a strong system and infrastructure for its safe and swift distribution when it’s ready to be delivered,” said EUM Jae Dong, senior vice president and head of Cargo Business Division at Korean Air.

The airline’s task force is monitoring vaccine developments including:

  • vaccine types and corresponding storage temperatures;
  • identifying and securing necessary equipment and facilities;
  • strengthening monitoring, safety and security procedures to deal with exceptional situations; and
  • conducting simulations of diverse scenarios.

As airlines prepare to take off in a post-pandemic world, carriers need to figure out how to rebuild in a rapidly evolving global environment where historical data no longer applies. As the travel ecosystem charts a new chapter, airlines have begun to prioritise digital transformation, sustainability, customer well-being, and innovation as pillars towards a recovery.

Korean Air will be leading the change, as the national carrier to one of the world’s most digitally connected countries, and will be using Amadeus Digital Experience Suite (DES), a key component of the Amadeus Airline Platform in the redesign of its website and mobile platform.

The expanded partnership with Amadeus supports the acceleration of digital transformation for Korean Air, along with the renewal of Altea Passenger Service System agreement. Korean Air will be one of the largest airlines globally to implement the Amadeus Digital Experience Suite later this year.

“Korean Air is focused on accelerating our goal of digital transformation”

“In these unprecedented times, it is encouraging to be able to collaborate with partners like Amadeus. Korean Air is focused on accelerating our goal of digital transformation, with the full commitment of our leadership team. By leveraging our partnership with Amadeus, we can streamline our operations and reach that goal faster. This will take Korean Air to a next level of international growth, enhancing forward-thinking to deliver the ultimate customer experience,” says Kenneth Chang,  executive vice president and CMO, Korean Air.

DES is part of the Amadeus Airline Platform, an open platform which simplifies and streamlines – removing complexity for airlines so they can focus on managing and growing their business, innovating, and delivering personalised traveller experiences. The platform has several layers, one of which is the Digital Experience Suite, which gives airlines the flexibility to work with third-party partners and developers, in order to fast-track innovation. Day-to-day operations will be more agile, allowing Korean Air to integrate technologies and services from Amadeus or from other partners and developers.

“Simple, open and agile”

Amadeus Digital Experience Suite will allow for Korean Air to customise its website, providing customers with a simple and interactive interface, hiding the weave of complex business solutions needed to provide a seamless customer experience.  For example, the airline can create a shopping cart with the removal of session constraints; which allows customers to retain their history of selected flights and avoid having to restart and pick an itinerary from scratch thus creating a smoother retail experience.

Cyril Tetaz, executive vice president of airlines, in the Asia Pacific region at Amadeus said: “We are very pleased to reaffirm our partnership with Korean Air and play a key role in its growth strategy. Amadeus’ Airline Platform is simple, open and agile, and will support Korean Air in innovating, collaborating and experimenting to create new products which will add value and create personalised retail experiences for its passengers.”

Korean Air has implemented a ‘back to front’ zone boarding system for all economy class passengers on domestic and international routes, which will ensure that passengers seated at the back of the aircraft will be boarded first.

Each aircraft is subdivided into three to four zones depending on its size, and the zone number is printed on passengers’ boarding passes so that travellers can easily check their boarding order. While rear row passengers are to board first, passengers with infants or children, the elderly and those needing special assistance will be permitted to pre-board regardless of the zone number.

These procedures form part of the social distancing initiatives to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as boarding from back to front helps to minimise contact between passengers. To emphasise social distancing measures that are in place, there will also be floor markers at the gate floor for international flights so that passengers can keep their distance while waiting to board the flight.

Budapest Airport’s record growth continues as the Hungarian capital announces yet another new airline for summer 2020. Korean Air, the flag carrier of South Korea, will operate three-times-weekly from its Seoul Incheon hub to Budapest from 23 May to 17 October.

Its arrival means that Central and Eastern Europe’s leading gateway will offer a daily summer service to Seoul, offering more choice and convenience than ever. Korean Air’s new offering more than proves the high demand in this growing market and to and from Northeast Asia generally.

Budapest’s summer 2020 capacity to Northeast Asia has grown by more than 100% against summer 2019. Hungary’s capital now boasts non-stop long-haul routes to Beijing, Chongqing, Sanya, Seoul, and Shanghai in Northeast Asia, along with Chicago, Doha, Dubai, New York, Philadelphia, and Toronto.

Commenting on Korean Air’s announcement, Kam Jandu, chief commercial officer of Budapest Airport said: “It is great to see that there is yet another long-haul flight being launched from Budapest to Seoul in May. The market demand to and from Korea is considerable enough to support these three new weekly flights.”

Korean Air has announced the introduction of facial recognition boarding tech in Atlanta, US.  As of 1 November,  passengers on flight KE036 in Atlanta will be able to board after a facial recognition scan without scanning their boarding pass.

Facial recognition boarding is made possible with technology that takes a photograph of the passenger’s face and automatically checks whether it matches the passenger’s passport and boarding pass information. The service is expected to enhance the efficiency of identification checks and strengthen security while reducing boarding time for passengers.

Korean Air is currently using airport facial recognition services in Singapore and Los Angeles, and will begin to provide facial recognition boarding services in Atlanta from November through a technological cooperation with its joint venture partner Delta Air Lines. Korean Air will also expand facial recognition boarding to New York (JFK) in December. Korean Air is also preparing for the installation of facial recognition services in line with the Incheon International Airport Corporation’s Smart Airport Plan.

Meanwhile, Korean Air has expanded self-check-in kiosk services in Incheon to allow for seat assignment and self-tagging of baggage. Using these kiosks is expected to reduce a passenger’s check-in time by more than 30%.

Korean Air’s volunteer group performed volunteer work in Sri Lanka in October for the underprivileged local community in the suburbs of Colombo. The area was severely damaged by the heavy floods in 2017 and is still prone to floods.

The volunteers started rebuilding the neighbourhood by repairing damaged homes. The employees of the airline also spent time with local children by hosting English aviation camps, dance competitions and playing balloon games. Expenses for the volunteer work were paid by the carrier’s company fund and donations from members of the volunteer groups.

Korean Air volunteer groups have contributed to the underprivileged communities in Nepal, Indonesia and Cambodia this year. In September, the airline also organised World Cleanup Day 2019 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, to collect trash and raise environmental awareness.

Currently, the airline has a total of 25 volunteer groups actively helping with projects and community programmes at orphanages, rehabilitation centres for the disabled, as well as senior care centres to support disadvantaged groups.

Korean Air's new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

Korean Air has announced its plans to adjust the frequency of some routes, in consideration of decreasing demand of Japanese routes due to Korea-Japan tensions. At the same time, the airline will increase the frequency of routes in the Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Chinese markets.

Korean Air will suspend the Busan-Osaka route (14 flights a week) from 16 September , as well as Jeju-Narita (three flights a week) and Jeju-Osaka (four flights a week) from 1 November.

The airline will also temporarily suspend some of its other routes. Incheon-Komatsu (three flights a week) and Incheon-Kagoshima (three flights a week) will be suspended from 29 September  to 16 November, and Incheon-Asahikawa (five flights a week) will be suspended from 29 September to 26 October.

For Incheon-Osaka/Fukuoka routes, both routes currently have 28 flights a week, and the frequency will be decreased to 21 flights a week between 27 October and 16 November. The frequency of Incheon-Okinawa will be reduced from seven to four flights a week, and Busan-Narita/Fukuoka from fourteen to seven flights a week, between 29 September  and 16 November .

In the meantime, Korean Air plans to strengthen its route competitiveness by focusing more on other markets, such as Southeast Asia, Oceania, and China in the winter season.

To begin with, Korean Air will launch a new daily route to Clark, Philippines, starting from October 27. The airline will also add four more operations a week for Incheon-Chiang Mai/Bali, increasing the number of flights per week to eleven. In Oceania, the frequency of the Incheon-Brisbane route will be increased from five to seven flights a week.

Korean Air is also planning to expand its network to China with the launch of new direct services. The airline plans to start direct flights from Incheon to Zhangjiajie and Hangzhou three times a week each, and Incheon-Nanjing four times a week. The service between Incheon and Beijing will be operated 17 times a week, up from the previous 14 a week.

In other changes, Korean Air will boost the frequency on some domestic routes. It will launch a new service between Pohang and Jeju seven times a week, and the Ulsan-Jeju flight will be operated seven times a week, an increase of two flights a week.

The schedule updates are subject to government approval and will come into effect after government approval.

Korean Air has announced it will introduce 20 Boeing 787-10s, the largest member of the Dreamliner family, for the first time in Korea, and add 10 more 787-9s to its existing fleet.

Korean Air, South Korea’s flagship carrier, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 18 June to purchase 30 Boeing wide-body aircraft at the Le Bourget Airport, where the 2019 Paris Air Show just recently concluded.

Present at the signing ceremony were Walter Cho, chairman and CEO of Korean Air; Kevin McAllister, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes; Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president of commercial sales and marketing of the Boeing Company; and John L. Plueger, CEO and president of Aircraft Leasing Corporation.

The decision reflects Korean Air’s continuous effort to modernize the fleet, and the new 787 airplanes will replace its existing airplanes, such as A330s, B777s, and B747s.

The 68-meter long 787-10 is 5 meters longer than 787-9 airplanes. As the largest version of the 787 family, the 787-10 offers around 15% more space for passengers and cargo than the 787-9. The airplane can accommodate up to 330 passengers, 40 more than the 787-9, and the cargo space is 20 cubic metres larger. With unparalleled fuel efficiency, the 787-10 allows operators to achieve 25% better fuel efficiency per seat compared to the previous airplanes.

This week’s collection of stories descending from on high features with a headline grabbing purchase, an Iron Chef menu and, of course, new routes.

But, first let’s get back to the headline grabbing purchase…

Cathay snaps up Hong Kong Express

Cathay Pacific has finally made it official that it will be buying budget airline Hong Kong Express, following weeks of rumours and industry tittle tattle.

The deal, announced in the early hours of this morning will see Cathay purchase the LCC for  HKD 4.93bn Hong Kong dollars (USD628m), through a combination of cash and promissory loan notes, the company revealed in its stock filing. The agreement – which comes after a two year period of restructuring, in order to cut costs and led a profitable 2018 for the carrier — will see HK Express become a wholly subsidiary of Cathay Pacific.

A Cathay Pacific spokesperson said “We intend to continue to operate Hong Kong Express as a stand-alone airline using the low-cost carrier business model.  Hong Kong Express captures “a unique market segment” the spokesperson said, adding that the deal “represents an attractive and practical way for the Cathay Group to support the long-term development and growth of our aviation business”.

Compelling and easy

The Philippines’ largest carrier, Cebu Pacific  will begin regular flights between Shanghai and Cebu starting 15 April 2019, as it boosts its route network from key tourism markets in North Asia to prime leisure destinations in the Philippines. The new Shanghai route is also in line with the carrier’s plans to ramp-up capacity in its Cebu hub by as much as 20% in 2019.

Flights between Shanghai and Cebu will run six times weekly (Monday to Saturday), beginning 15 April 2019. At just under four hours’ flying time, the evening departure schedules are timed to enable travellers to easily travel from the airport to their beach destinations.

“We want to provide more international connections from our other hubs in the Philippines, and by connecting our Cebu hub to Shanghai, we offer travellers from China a compelling and easy option to access another top vacation destination,” said Candice Iyog, vice president for marketing and distribution at Cebu Pacific.

HK Express’ Iron Chef

Hong Kong Airlines has launched a brand new Business Class menu for its customers travelling out of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) . Designed exclusively by celebrity chef and television personality Chris Cosentino, the new LAX Business Class menu is an adaption of his current San Francisco Business Class menu and comes with a slight twist to cater to the preferences of Southern California travellers.

Chris Cosentino is the chef and owner of San Francisco restaurant, Cockscomb, where he reinterprets classic San Francisco dishes by adding his own unique twist. He is also known as the winner of Top Chef Masters, a contestant on The Next Iron Chef and for his appearance in Iron Chef America.

“A fresh new approach to what inflight food can be”

The chef first collaborated with Hong Kong Airlines in late 2017 to design a comprehensive menu of 12 dishes, including a series of appetizers, main courses and desserts to be rotated regularly on the airline’s service from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Hong Kong. Cosentino’s  Business Class inflight menu was officially launched on the SFO inaugural flight to Hong Kong on 25 March 2018.

Cosentino said: “Using my years of education and experiences to create meals that would not only satisfy but excite the guests at 10,000 feet up and giving a fresh new approach to what inflight food can be has been a complete joy. Launching our new menu on the Los Angeles-Hong Kong route is very exciting. I am looking forward to flying on the first flight showcasing the menu.”

Vegas baby!

Following the recent announcement of Eurowings’ winter flight schedule for 2019/20, Europe’s leading point-to-point airline will now fly to four new long-haul destinations including Barbados, Mauritius, Windhoek and Las Vegas, expanding the tourist offering from German’s largest airport.

From 27 October 2019, Eurowings will fly three times a week – on Tuesday‘s, Thursday‘s and Sunday‘s – to the US metropolis of Las Vegas and is now available to book through Lufthansa sales channels and viaeurowings.com later this year.

All change

Korean Air has announced changes to its flight schedule for the 2019 summer season, commencing 31 March until 26 October. The changes include launching new routes, increasing service frequency on key routes that have shown steady growth and resuming seasonal routes, which do not operate in the winter.

A significant change is the expansion of the Korean Air network with the launch of two new direct services. From 12 April  Korean Air will launch a non-stop scheduled service between Seoul and Boston (above), in cooperation with joint venture partner, Delta Air Lines.

Moreover, the departure of the flight from Incheon to Seattle will change to 4:40 PM, to create synergy with Delta’s strong network within the U.S. and offer enhanced travel options to customers.

In addition, commencing 1 June, the airline will begin a direct service between Incheon and Asahikawa, Hokkaido (below), Japan five times a week. Located in the centre of Hokkaido Island, Asahikawa has picturesque scenery and a cool climate in the summer and is a popular tourism destination.

Further changes will see, as of 31 March, flights between Incheon and Istanbul, Turkey will increase from four to five times a week. The Incheon-Zagreb service, which has launched in September 2018, maintains operation three times a week.

From 22 April Korean Air will resume operation of its direct flight to the Russian city Irkutsk and from April 28 to St. Petersburg. While these Russian routes do not operate in the winter season, they provide convenient flight options for leisure and business travellers travelling to Russia and Northern Europe during the summer.

Keeping up with its social responsibility goals, Korean Air’s volunteer group “Didimdol” (a Korean word for stepping-stone) flew to the Bicol region in Philippines, to perform volunteer work for the local community like every year.

Members of Didimdol joined the local residents to build homes and provide free meals at local elementary schools and slum areas. Volunteers also provided basic medicine and nutritional supplements as the region lacks medical facilities.

Bicol encompasses the southern part of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines, and is approximately 377 km away from Manila. The region was severely ravaged by typhoon Rammasun in July 2014. Korean Air has been volunteering in the region every year since 2005.

Currently, Korean Air has a total of 27 volunteer groups actively helping with projects and community programs at orphanages, rehabilitation centers for the disabled, as well as senior care centers to support disadvantaged groups.

The airline actively encourages and supports groups to perform volunteer activities in various countries, including the Philippines, Thailand and Mongolia.

“Today we celebrate delivery of our first GTF-powered C Series aircraft. We are excited for the dramatic improvements in efficiency, emissions, and noise that will enhance our operations and passenger experience,” said Soo-Keun Lee, chief technology officer at Korean Air.

“This is a very important milestone for the C Series program because it is our breakthrough into the fast-growing Asian market, and we are honoured to have Korean Air Lines as our brand ambassador in the region,” said Fred Cromer (main picture), president of Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “We expect that over the next 20 years, Asian operators will take delivery of 2,870 small single-aisle aircraft. Korean Air has reached an agreement with Delta Air Lines to create a trans-Pacific joint venture between the US and Asia.

The new arrangement between the two SkyTeam alliance partners marks the latest stage of a decades-old partnership, and will allow the carriers to coordinate their operations and share revenues on routes across the Pacific.

First announced in March when Korean Air and Delta signed a memorandum of understanding, the new joint venture will include expanded codesharing on trans-Pacific routes, joint sales and marketing initiatives in Asia and the US, co-location at key airports with improved passenger and baggage transit processes, and additional frequent flyer benefits.

“Together, Delta and Korean Air are building a world-class partnership that will offer more destinations, outstanding airport facilities and an unmatched customer experience on the trans-Pacific,” said Ed Bastian, Delta’s CEO. “By combining the strengths of our two companies, we are building a stronger airline for our employees, customers and investors.”

Korean Air’s chairman, YH Cho, added; “Now is the right time for this JV. The synergies we’re creating will build stronger and more sustainable companies, and this is good for travellers, our companies and our countries.”

The joint venture will create a combined network serving more than 290 destinations in the Americas and 80 in Asia. The two airlines will also share costs and revenues on flights.

To prepare for the joint venture, Delta recently launched new direct service between Atlanta and Seoul. And later this summer, Korean Air will introduce a third daily flight between Los Angeles and Seoul and a second service between San Francisco and the Korean capital.

Korean Air’s latest long-haul aircraft, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, will make its inaugural international flight on Thursday 1 June 2017.

The twin-aisle aircraft was delivered to Korean Air in February 2017, but has since been operating domestic flights between Seoul’s Gimpo Airport and Jeju Island. But from tomorrow, the Dreamliner will be deployed on the trans-Pacific route between Seoul’s Incheon International Airport and Toronto. Flights will operate daily.

Following this switch, the Gimpo-Jeju route will be served by a Boeing 777-300 aircraft.

Korean Air will continue to expand its fleet of Dreamliners this summer, with new aircraft expected to be deployed on routes from Incheon to Madrid and Beijing in July and August. Lombok’s tourism industry will get a significant boost this summer, when Korean Air launches direct flights to the Indonesian resort island.

The Antara news agency reported the general manager of Lombok International Airport, I Gusti Ngurah Ardita, as confirming that the South Korean national carrier will operate a series of charter services from Seoul in July and August 2017.

“Korean Air will open a charter flight for seven times,” he was quoted saying. “This charter flight is, of course, expected to open a fixed route for Korea-Lombok flights.”

Ardita added that the launch of Korean Air’s flights followed a meeting between the airport and the national carrier in April 2017, and that the flights are being supported by the regional government and tourism board of Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province.

South Korea is one of Asia’s fastest-growing outbound tourism markets, and the additional flights will support the Indonesian government’s efforts of attracting 20 million international visitors per year by 2019.

The recent proliferation of air routes between Spain and the Far East has continued, with the launch of Korean Air’s inaugural flight to Barcelona.

The national carrier touched down at the Catalan city for the first time on Friday evening, marking the start of a new thrice weekly non-stop service from Seoul’s Incheon International Airport.

The Barcelona flights, which will be operated by a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, will complement Korean Air’s existing Seoul-Madrid route.

Previously under-served, air routes between the Iberian Peninsula and the Far East have taken off in recent years. As well as Iberia’s return to Asia, with new routes to Tokyo and Shanghai, airlines including Cathay Pacific, Air China, China Eastern and Beijing Capital Airlines have all introduced new services.

According to data from ForwardKeys, total international scheduled capacity between Asia and Spain increased 38% in 2016, and is expected to jump by a further 163% in the first half of 2017.

Korean Air has formed a major new partnership with Delta Air Lines, creating a joint venture to align and expand the two carriers’ trans-Pacific networks.

The memorandum of understanding provides scope for the airlines to coordinate their operations between Asia and the US, including complementary schedules, reciprocal frequent flyer benefits, lounge access and onward connectivity.

“This joint venture will benefit our customers by providing more convenient connection schedules and widen their opportunities in earning mileages,” said Korean Air’s chairman & CEO, Yang Ho Cho. “With this agreement, we will reinforce Incheon airport’s position as a major international hub in Northeast Asia and support the growth of Korea’s aviation industry.”

Delta will expand its Korean operations this summer, with the launch of direct flights between Atlanta and Seoul in June 2017. This will complement Korean Air’s existing service on this route.

Korean Air meanwhile, will continue to expand its US operations with the introduction of a third daily frequency between Seoul and Los Angeles and a second flight between San Francisco and Seoul.

Combined, the two SkyTeam alliance members serve more than 290 destinations in the Americas and more than 80 in Asia.

Korean Air’s fleet modernisation strategy reached another major milestone this week when the airline took delivery of its first ever Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The Seoul-based national carrier, which has introduced several new long-haul models in recent years, including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8, has now welcomed the first of 10 787-9s.

The twin-aisle aircraft will initially be deployed on domestic routes between Seoul and Jeju, before being launched on long-haul international routes to Toronto, Madrid and Zurich later this year.

The 787-9 can seat 269 passengers in three cabins, with six seats in first class, 18 in business class and 245 in economy.

“The 787 Dreamliner will be a key member of Korean Air’s fleet as we continue to introduce next-generation airplanes to our customers,” said Walter Cho, president of Korean Air. “The aircraft is fuel-efficient, quiet, has lower operating costs and is spacious and very elegant. The cabin features are impressive and will ensure maximum comfort for Korean Air’s passengers.”

Korean Air is scheduled to introduce five 787-9s to its fleet this year, with all 10 aircraft to be delivered by the end of 2019. As well as the Dreamliners, the airline also plans to take delivery of 10 more 777-300ERs, three 747-8s and 11 A330s in the coming years, while its older 747-400s will be retired.

With this latest delivery, Korean Air becomes the only airline in the world to operate the passenger versions of the A380, 747-8 and 787 Dreamliner.

Korean Air is adding two destinations and cutting two in a significant shake-up of its network.

The national carrier has revealed plans to launch non-stop flights between Seoul and Barcelona from April 2017. Flights will run three times a week and will mark the first direct connection between Catalonia and South Korea.

In addition, Korean Air has confirmed its previously-announced plan to start flying to Iran’s capital Tehran, although the launch date and frequency of the route have not been confirmed.

The airline will also suspend two of its routes early next year, due to low demand. In February 2017, the direct service to Siem Reap and the Seoul-Jeddah via Riyadh route will cease operating. In relation to the Saudi route however, Korean Air said it plans to mitigate the impact of the suspension with “increased connections with Middle Eastern airlines that operate from Dubai International Airport”.

The airline will also increase the frequency of flights to several destinations in the US. The Seoul-San Francisco route will gradually increase from seven to 14 flights per week over the course of 2017, reaching its maximum level by September, and the Seoul-Seattle service will rise from five to seven weekly flights from May 2017.

In addition, the current twice daily flights between Seoul and Los Angeles will be increased to three daily flights during the summer high season from June to August 2017.

Korean Air has reported the largest quarterly profit in its history, dispelling recent worries about its financial stability.

In the third quarter of 2016, which ended on 30 September, the national carrier generated an operating profit of KRW447.6 billion (US$385 million), up 34.9% year-on-year and its strongest ever three-month result, surpassing the previous record of KRW416.5bn set in the third quarter of 2010.

This result was driven by a 4.7% increase in sales revenue, to KRW3.06 trillion.

The result is in stark contrast to the performance of Korean Air’s sister company, Hanjin Shipping, which filed for bankruptcy protection in August. But the airline said this had actually improved its financial results, as its statements for the past three quarters had reflected a loss of more than KRW825bn which was related to Hanjin.

“Korean Air has completely removed its financial risk brought by Hanjin Shipping. Furthermore, thanks to the biggest quarterly profit and the increase in capital, Korean Air reduced its debt ratio to 917%,” the company said.

“As Hanjin Shipping is under court receivership, Hanjin Group will no longer provide further financial support to the company. Thus, Korean Air’s debt ratio will not be influenced anymore,” a Korean Air spokesperson said. “We will monitor closely on the market response and will put in our best effort to improve our financial structure.”

Korean Air also returned to net profit in the third quarter of 2016, with the positive KRW428bn result reversing the KRW510bn net loss experienced in the same period last year.
