Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu – Hotel Exterior

Hyatt Hotels Corporation has announced the opening of Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu, which marks the debut of Hyatt’s rapidly growing lifestyle brand in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. The 222-room hotel is centrally located in the heart of the city’s lively dining and entertainment district, providing a convenient homebase for adventurous explorers and local residents to discover authentic experiences and hidden gems in the coastal capital of Malaysia’s Sabah state on the island of Borneo.

“We are delighted to introduce Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu as Hyatt’s first Hyatt Centric hotel in Southeast Asia, setting a new milestone for our rapidly expanding lifestyle brand,” said David Udell, group president, Asia-Pacific, Hyatt. “Building on Hyatt’s brand presence in Malaysia for over 40 years, we are excited that this hotel will offer fresh experiences through this new launchpad from which savvy travelers can discover the natural beauty and local experiences around Kota Kinabalu and beyond.”

The 23-story hotel features modern guestrooms with balconies and is crowned with an infinity pool, duplex restaurant and bar on the rooftop, offering sweeping views overlooking Signal Hill, the islands at Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park and the South China Sea. Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu is steps away from shopping hotspots and the Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal from which guests can take a short 20-minute boat trip to surrounding islands to enjoy white sandy beaches and underwater activities. The hotel is conveniently located for business travelers with its close proximity to Sabah International Convention Centre, a sports complex and a university. Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) is a 15-minute drive from the hotel.

Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu – Sea View King Guestroom

Set against the lush backdrop of Signal Hill, the hotel’s contemporary, inviting architecture and interiors by globally renowned architect Kengo Kuma reflect the heritage of Sabah. The interior design is inspired by the majestic jungles of Borneo, with bamboo found in the lobby representing the vegetation in the forest floor while the greenery-accented rooftop creates the sense of being at the canopy overlooking the blue waters and verdant hills.

“Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu truly embraces the city’s flourishing cultural and culinary scenes, from our ON22 restaurant and ON23 rooftop bar serving traditional family recipes with a modern twist and locally inspired craft cocktails respectively, to guided tours of the colorful street art in the neighbourhood, led by our hotel team,” said Ruben Schrijver, general manager, Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu. “Our passionate Sabahan team is excited to share their local knowledge and tips on local, under-the-radar attractions, ensuring travelers and locals alike never miss a moment of adventure.”

Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu – ON22 Restaurant Patio

Food and Beverage
Together, ON22 restaurant and ON23 bar form the duplex dining destination, immersing guests in vibrant Asian flavors and creative beverages alongside mesmerizing views from day to night. Featuring indoor and outdoor patio seating, complete with a live kitchen, ON22’s ‘Dining in the Gardens’ theme features three distinct spaces: ‘Sea-Forest,’ framed with sweeping sights of the sea and the lush hills; ‘Wood Garden,’ where the décor and greenery is inspired by the tropical rainforest in Borneo; and ‘Dry Garden’ with its large boulders, stone floors and cinnamon-colored wooden panels, which pay tribute to Malaysia’s mighty Mount Kinabalu, with an exclusive section that can be used for intimate events.

Connecting ON22 restaurant to ON23 rooftop bar is a show-stopping curved centerpiece staircase leading guests to a light-filled ambiance with floor-to-ceiling windows where they can enjoy the lounge amid modern furnishings with wood finishes and granite. A perfect spot for sundown to take in the panoramic island sunset, ON23’s welcoming and fun atmosphere is ideal for after-work drinks as well as daytime relaxation where guests can choose from craft cocktails and ciders alongside shared plates and snacks.

Screened with bamboo and calming water from the street entrance, The Lounge in the lobby is an inviting social space for travelers and local guests to enjoy quick bites and beverages, and is home to a pop-up artisan corner as well. The two striking artworks on the wall reflect the local culture, art and points of interest in Sabah, adding a conversational piece to the communal space.

Princess Cruises made its first visit to the Malaysian port of Kota Kinabalu this week, as part of its 2016-17 Southeast Asian season.

The 18-deck, 2,706-passenger Diamond Princess arrived at the Malaysian port on 1 December 2016 as part of a three-month season homeporting in Singapore. The Kota Kinabalu call formed part of a 10-night voyage from Singapore to the Vietnamese port of Nha Trang.

And Princess has already confirmed that the Borneo port will be added to its Southeast Asian itineraries in the 2017-18 season. In total, Diamond Princess will make eight calls to Kota Kinabalu over the two seasons.

“We are excited to debut Kota Kinabalu in our current sailing itinerary as we have been exploring Kota Kinabalu as part of our itineraries due to its natural beauty and exotic cultural elements,” said Farriek Tawfik, Princess Cruises’ director for Southeast Asia.

“Not only do we contribute to the local cruise tourism industry, Malaysia remains a very important source market for Princess Cruises. Moreover, guests in Borneo now have the option of boarding our ship from Kota Kinabalu which further increases the convenience and attractiveness of taking a cruise from Kota Kinabalu to the many destinations in this region.”

Kota Kinabalu is one of four Malaysian ports of calls for the Diamond Princess this season, along with Penang, Port Klang and Langkawi.

Malaysia Airlines has unveiled plans for a major expansion of its operations in China.

The national carrier will launch nine new Chinese routes in 2017, while also adding more capacity on two of its existing routes. New destinations will include Haikou, Nanjing, Fuzhou, Wuhan, Chengdu, Chongqing, Tianjin and Shenzhen.

“Malaysia Airlines plans to triple our Chinese business over the next five years,” said Malaysia Airlines’ CEO, Peter Bellew. “I see potential for direct flights to 20 Chinese cities from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching by 2019. We have huge confidence in China.”

The expansion will start before the end of this year, with the launch of twice weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur and Haikou in December 2016. Then in April 2017, Malaysia Airlines will start flying from KL to Nanjing and Fuzhou, before launching flights from KL to Wuhan in August. All of these routes will run three times a week.

In October 2017, a new pair of major routes will link KL with China’s western metropolises – Chengdu (five flights per week) and Chongqing (three per week).

And it’s not only KL that will see additional Chinese flights; from August 2017, Penang will get three weekly flights to Shenzhen and four per week to Shanghai, and Kota Kinabalu will received twice weekly services to Tianjin.

In addition, the frequency of Malaysia Airlines’ existing KL-Shanghai service will be doubled to twice a week in April 2017, and the KL-Hong Kong route will be upgraded to a larger Airbus A330 aircraft.

“The improved connectivity will foster deeper business links between the two nations.  Malaysians relish the business opportunities and tourism experience in China. The Chinese tourist market to Malaysia is growing rapidly due to the shared food, language and cultural connections,” Bellew added.

They appreciate important things done well; demand quality, comfort and value, together with honest, authentic service; and want privacy and efficiency without unnecessary fuss or intrusion. In this highly desirable location for business and leisure travellers, Hotel Jen is well positioned to offer guests to Kota Kinabalu more flexibility, as busy non-traditional work hours tend to blend the boundaries between business and leisure,” Dogan added.

Located on top of PacifiCity’s lifestyle mall, Hotel Jen Kota Kinabalu offers views of the South China Sea and Mount Kinabalu from its 440 rooms and suites. Facilities at the hotel will include a restaurant, lounge, rooftop bar, fitness centre and meeting facilities, including a ballroom.

The hotel will also provide access to the new Sabah International Convention Centre, which is currently under construction.

Hotel Jen is a new contemporary hotel concept which has replaced Shangri-La’s Traders Hotels brand, and is now being rolled out across Asia.
