Marriott Bonvoy hotels in Japan are getting ready to celebrate the arrival of springtime 2023 in Japan, when sakura, or cherry blossom trees begin to bloom across the country around March and April. With an exciting array of sakura-inspired stay packages and dining experiences, Marriott Bonvoy hotels are inviting travelers to join in the seasonal celebrations and witness the beauty of the sakura buds that blossom in many locations near the hotels in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Yokohama.

Sakura season has been celebrated for centuries in Japan, and traditional “hanami”, or flower-viewing parties and picnics are organized to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of the delicate flower buds that bloom in clouds of pink all over the country. A must-see for any visitor, the sakura celebrations are part of ancient Japanese traditions, heralding the arrival of warmer weather, and representing the promise of new life and new beginnings.

TOKYO
Guests staying at The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon can explore the picturesque Shiba Park, where about 200 sakura trees blossom every spring. From March 18 to April 9, this boutique luxury hotel, with 206 rooms offering breathtaking glimpses of the Tokyo skyline, is presenting a Sakura Package featuring sakura-inspired offerings; an exclusively curated welcome amenity sweet and Aromatized Sakura Martini beautifully designed with sakura flower, served at the Lobby Bar.

The Westin Tokyo is located near the banks of the Meguro River, which is lined by about 800 sakura trees, and is one of the best spots in Tokyo to view the sakura blossoms. Guests can pick up a Sakura French Toast at The Lounge, or a delightful Sakura and Cranberry Butter Sandwich at The Westin Deli and head outdoors for a hanami picnic under the trees. Back in the hotel, sakura-inspired cocktail and mocktail selections await guests at The Bar and The Compass Rose.

YOKOHAMA
In Yokohama, Sakura-dori or “Cherry Blossom Avenue”, about five to ten minutes’ walk from The Westin Yokohama, is one of the city’s most famous hanami spots with its 102 sakura trees that line the street. The hotel is offering a seasonal Sakura Afternoon Tea as well as sakura-themed dinner courses at its signature Japanese restaurant, Kissui-sen. A Sakura Bento Box lunch is also available for guests who wish to explore the city and plan their own hanami picnics, the perfect celebration of the season.

OSAKA
The entrance of W Osaka, Japan’s first W hotel, is inspired by the beauty of the gorgeous sakura trees in Osaka, Japan. This spring, the hotel will be presenting pink sakura-themed cocktails at Living Room, the vibrant social hub of the hotel where guests can socialize with curated cocktails with live DJs.  MYDO, the hotel’s signature teppanyaki restaurant is serving multi-course “kappo” or table d’hôte menus showcasing the finest and freshest ingredients of springtime, accompanied by blush-pink rosé Wines.

The glamorous The St. Regis Osaka is one of this city’s most iconic luxury hotels, and is one of the most romantic places to enjoy sakura season in Osaka. The hotel is offering the Japanese “Hanafuda” themed cocktail using variety of strawberries at The St. Regis Bar, an artful destination to enjoy handcrafted cocktails. Guest can a moment of joyous spring with collection such as the Sakura anpan red bean paste bread, the elegant Sakura buttercream sandwich, made with buttercream sandwiched between sablé cookies at La Boulangerie.

KYOTO
The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto sits on the banks for the picturesque Kamo River, one of the most beautiful places in Kyoto to take a stroll and enjoy the sight of the trees in full bloom. To celebrate the arrival of spring, the hotel is presenting two seasonal cocktails, Thousand Gold with the delicate characters of lychee, apple and sakura leaves, and Sakura Across, with a profile of brandy, cocoa, caramel and spicy chai tea complementing the delicate flavors of sakura leaves and finished with tonic water.

Four Seasons has opened a new luxury hotel in Kyoto, Japan’s former capital city and home to about 20% of the country’s cultural “National Treasures”.

The new Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto is set within two-hectare, 12th Century pond garden in the historic Higashiyama district, close to the city centre. It features a combination of 123 rooms and suites and 57 residences.

“Kyoto is one of the world’s most alluring cities, but she can be shy in revealing her secrets. Our mission at Four Seasons is to help our guests discover her wonders and experience all the city has to offer,” said the hotel’s GM, Alex Porteous.

The rooms at Four Seasons Kyoto, including 13 suites, showcase views of the pond garden and feature traditional elements such as shoji panels, polished wood surfaces and locally-crafted screens, combined with modern technology.

F&B options at the hotel include a main restaurant, The Brasserie, which serves “modern bistro fare with a distinctive local twist”, and an exclusive sushi restaurant that serves just 10 guests at a time at an eight-metre-long counter, along with two private dining rooms. There is also a lounge and tea house.

Other facilities include a spa with seven treatment rooms, a sauna, steam, whirlpool and beauty salon, plus a fitness centre and indoor pool. And guests wanting to explore further afield will be assisted by the hotel’s “experience creator”, Hana Morioka, a local whose job it is to guide guests around the city, including the option of rickshaw tours.

The new Four Seasons Kyoto becomes the luxury hotel group’s second property in Japan, following the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi.

STR Global, the global hotel data provider, has partnered with the Kyoto Convention & Visitors Bureau (KCVB) to share its information with hotels in the Japanese city.

The new agreement will also increase the number of hotels in the Kyoto region from which STR Global sources its data, thus improving the accuracy of its figures.

“STR Global is proud to announce a partnership with the Kyoto Convention & Visitors Bureau, our company’s first with any CVB in Japan,” said Elizabeth Winkle, managing director of STR Global. “We look forward to providing hotel performance data that will help the KCVB with its analysis. At the same time, this partnership will allow STR Global to build a greater sample in a growing tourist market. Our data will provide a benchmarking service to all Kyoto hotels and beyond, providing each with a better understanding of their performance within the market.”

According to STR Global, Kyoto experienced occupancy levels of more than 90% in April, and has reported double-digit growth in terms of average daily rate (ADR) and revenue per available room (revPAR) for most of the last seven months.

“We suffered from a lack of hotel market data for a long time,” admitted Mr Akahoshi, managing director of the KCVB. “In order to shift to a new mode for successful tourism promotion, it is essential for us to do data analysis with STR Global and monitor global markets in a timely manner. I believe that STR Global will become our valued partner to extend our data analysis and strengthen further tourism promotion throughout Kyoto.”

STR Global is the largest hotel benchmarking service in Japan with more than 500 properties and 130,000 rooms represented in its reports.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has announced plans to launch its first Luxury Collection hotel in Japan.

Opening in March 2015, Suiran, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Kyoto will be a ryokan-style property located within the grounds of Tenryuji Temple – a UNESCO World Heritage site. Since the 1960s, the site has housed ‘Rantei’, a well-known traditional Japanese ryokan often used by the Japanese government to entertain VIPs.

In addition to the newly-built rooms and facilities, Suiran will retain two original structures – Enmei-kaku, which was built in 1899, and Hasshoken, which dates back to 1910. Both of these structures are currently undergoing extensive renovations and will eventually house the hotel’s restaurant and cafe.

The property will feature only 39 rooms, plus a lobby lounge, meeting room, fitness centre and spa.

“Japan has a well-established hospitality industry with limited supply and few new developments at the high-end of the market,” said Rajit Sukumaran, vice president of acquisition & development for Starwood Asia Pacific. “With this distinguished new addition to our portfolio, we will continue to deliver on the Luxury Collection’s brand promise to offer guests unparalleled access to rich, indigenous experiences.”

Suiran will join a portfolio of 23 Luxury Collection hotels in Asia Pacific, including the recently-opened Azure Qiantang in Hangzhou, The Castle Hotel in Dalian and The Grand Bharat in Gurgaon.

It also expands Starwood’s Japanese portfolio to 15 hotels, including seven Sheratons, six Westins, a St Regis and the new Luxury Collection property.

Cathay Pacific, Kyoto and Hong Kong hosted a mega fam last week

Japan National Tourist Office (JNTO) is to focus its tourism promotion efforts on a ‘fusion’ brand between traditional and modern cultures, its president has revealed.

Speaking to members of the travel industry earlier this week in London, Ryoichi Matsuyama, president of JNTO said its ‘Cool Japan, Fusion of Tradition’ campaign would further push its current image, which is currently outdated.

“I think Japan has a nice brand image but this is dependent on the 1980s and since then we have adopted a softer side,” he explained. “Our government has presented a new image of ‘cool Japan’ to show one single message. At this moment the government is working out the image and a new theme that is more culture or ‘human being’ led and a fusion of traditional and modern”.

Matsuyama also outlined the country’s plans to improve tourist-friendly facilities, including more WiFi points (Japanese phones already include connection) and the ability for card systems to accept more UK credit cards. In addition, the country has also vowed to update its tourist information centres and set a nationwide standard.

When questioned on flight connections, Matsuyama said he is in talks to improve connectivity, although airlines in the room said a route would need to be profitable to operate.

“Availability is an important aspect and while low-cost carriers are increasing services [around Asia], for long-haul you rely on full service carriers. At this moment we are not in concrete discussions but will focus on this market again and provide more connections; I think there is a lot of opportunity,” he added.

Aside from its targeted market of middle class high-end consumers, JNTO is also keen to shift the perception that it is an expensive destination by promoting the youth sector in its campaigns, particularly and the educational market. It will put prices online for travellers to see how much items cost while in the destination and it is looking to replicate a schools programme that is already successful in the US.
